Everything I learn about Rose Wilder Lane makes me more and more aware that she was a hilariously outrageous person who needs a movie made about her immediately.
After leaving Missouri, she moves to California and marries a real-estate guy who once tried to get her to help him con the railroad.
She gets hired at a San Francisco newspaper known for its yellow journalism, where she does things like writing a series of columns featuring the "real-life stories of a police detective" who, in real life, was a high-end jewel thief.
Her first book is a first-person "autobiography" of Charlie Chaplin that she (after a few interviews with Chaplin) completely made up, and that Charlie Chaplin immediately threatened to sue her publisher for.
Her second book is a biography of Jack London, which his wife only reluctantly allowed her to write because Rose presented herself as "someone who had never written for the newspapers before and needs a chance to break into the magazines." This book was also almost entirely fictional, and her publisher also almost got sued over it.
Third biography is the first-ever biography of Herbert Hoover, also a heavily-fictionalized account. (Doesn't seem to have been sued for this one. Steps in the right direction!)
Traveled as a reporter through Europe (to places like Albania and Poland) post-WWI. (If we want to talk about legal things that she did).
Wrote a book based on Laura's late-childhood pioneer experiences while Laura was writing the early books of the Little House series, and did not tell Laura about it. (Laura was ticked off).
Kept trying to insert a story into Laura's memoirs (and Little House on the Prairie) casting Pa as a member of a posse that hunted down the infamous (and never-caught) serial-killing Bender family (despite the fact that this was historically impossible). (It got to the point that Laura herself told this story to the public as an example of "a true story I couldn't out in my children's book." Despite the fact, I say again, that this was historically impossible).
During WWII, endured a minor incident (it involved one cop coming to her house) where the FBI investigated her as a potential communist based on a postcard she sent that was critical of the government. Turned this into a short story that presented herself as the righteously-outraged American citizen fighting against an oppressive government, and used this to whip up a nationwide media campaign against J. Edgar Hoover for spying on American citizens.
Flew to Vietnam as a war reporter when she was in her seventies.
#history is awesome#rose wilder lane#little house#i finally finished pioneer girl perspectives#to think i didn't even want to read the essay about the bender family#i skipped over it and left it til last#cuz i thought it would just rehash the fact vs fiction stuff i've seen covered elsewhere#turns out it was about the history of yellow journalism and provided most of the facts i've listed#(i was today years old when i learned that 'yellow journalism' was short for 'yellow kid journalism')#(and it came from a popular 'yellow kid' cartoon character that hearst and pulitzer both fought over to get into their papers)#also it turns out the bender family was a popular yellow journalism topic (because they'd never been found so people could make stuff up)#usually the stories centered around posses that found and killed them#but my favorite is the story that they made a hot air balloon from a natural gas deposit in a swamp in kansas#and escaped over the gulf of mexico#until their balloon popped and they landed on a passing ship where one of them could make a deathbed confession#history is awesome but the history of fake history is its own special kind of awesome

The Metamorphosis of Algy- Silly young caterpillar to cynical, smoking and sarcastic butterfly.
One thing that I absolutely cannot believe about the Biggles series is how much Algy changes throughout. When Biggles first meets him he goes on a literal bombing raid to destroy the enemy's flower beds after they bombed his sunflower seedlings and asks for a ginger beer when offered alcohol. Like, what? I would bet £20 that the most used verb relating to Algy is "sneered" every second word is sarcastic! I love this stuff, such character development from Biggles Pioneer Air Fighter!

Captain Gopinath: Pioneer of Affordable Air Travel
Early Life and Military Service
Gorur Ramaswami Iyengar Gopinath, known as Captain Gopinath, was born on November 13, 1951, in Gorur, a small village in Karnataka. His father, a teacher and farmer, instilled in him values of diligence and ambition. Gopinath’s journey to prominence began with his admission to Sainik School, Bijapur, followed by the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Indian Military Academy (IMA).
After serving in the Indian Army until the Bangladesh War of 1971–72, Gopinath retired at the age of 28, driven by a desire for entrepreneurial ventures beyond military life. His subsequent pursuits in silk farming, dairy farming, and hospitality laid the groundwork for his transformative career in aviation.
Venturing into Aviation: From Helicopters to Airlines
In 1997, Gopinath ventured into aviation with Deccan Aviation, offering chartered helicopter services. Recognizing the untapped potential for affordable air travel, he conceived the idea of establishing a low-cost airline during a trip to America in 2000. Witnessing the efficiency of Phoenix Airport, Gopinath resolved to make air travel accessible to the common Indian.
Air Deccan: Revolutionizing Air Travel
In August 2003, Gopinath launched Air Deccan, India’s first low-cost airline, with a fleet of six aircraft. Inspired by European budget carriers, Air Deccan aimed to democratize air travel by offering affordable fares to the masses. By 2007, it operated 380 flights daily from 67 airports, catering to a growing number of passengers at accessible prices.
Innovative Pricing Model: Flying for Re 1
Air Deccan made headlines by introducing dynamic pricing, enabling passengers to fly for as little as Re 1. This groundbreaking initiative, coupled with a no-frills service model, revolutionized the aviation industry and made air travel accessible to millions of Indians.
Mergers and Challenges
Despite its initial success, Air Deccan faced financial challenges and underwent restructuring, culminating in its merger with Kingfisher Airlines in 2008. Despite Gopinath’s vision, subsequent developments in the aviation sector led to the closure of Kingfisher Red in 2011, marking the end of an era in Indian aviation.
Legacy and Impact
Captain Gopinath’s pioneering efforts transformed the Indian aviation landscape, making air travel affordable and accessible to millions. His entrepreneurial spirit and visionary leadership continue to inspire future generations, underscoring the power of innovation and perseverance in realizing ambitious dreams.
Conclusion
Captain Gopinath’s journey from a humble village to the forefront of Indian aviation epitomizes the spirit of enterprise and resilience. His legacy as the architect of affordable air travel resonates as a testament to the transformative potential of bold ideas and unwavering determination in shaping industries and empowering communities.

"A century of gradual reforestation across the American East and Southeast has kept the region cooler than it otherwise would have become, a new study shows.
The pioneering study of progress shows how the last 25 years of accelerated reforestation around the world might significantly pay off in the second half of the 21st century.
Using a variety of calculative methods and estimations based on satellite and temperature data from weather stations, the authors determined that forests in the eastern United States cool the land surface by 1.8 – 3.6°F annually compared to nearby grasslands and croplands, with the strongest effect seen in summer, when cooling amounts to 3.6 – 9°F.
The younger the forest, the more this cooling effect was detected, with forest trees between 20 and 40 years old offering the coolest temperatures underneath.
“The reforestation has been remarkable and we have shown this has translated into the surrounding air temperature,” Mallory Barnes, an environmental scientist at Indiana University who led the research, told The Guardian.
“Moving forward, we need to think about tree planting not just as a way to absorb carbon dioxide but also the cooling effects in adapting for climate change, to help cities be resilient against these very hot temperatures.”
The cooling of the land surface affected the air near ground level as well, with a stepwise reduction in heat linked to reductions in near-surface air temps.
“Analyses of historical land cover and air temperature trends showed that the cooling benefits of reforestation extend across the landscape,” the authors write. “Locations surrounded by reforestation were up to 1.8°F cooler than neighboring locations that did not undergo land cover change, and areas dominated by regrowing forests were associated with cooling temperature trends in much of the Eastern United States.”
By the 1930s, forest cover loss in the eastern states like the Carolinas and Mississippi had stopped, as the descendants of European settlers moved in greater and greater numbers into cities and marginal agricultural land was abandoned.
The Civilian Conservation Corps undertook large replanting efforts of forests that had been cleared, and this is believed to be what is causing the lower average temperatures observed in the study data.
However, the authors note that other causes, like more sophisticated crop irrigation and increases in airborne pollutants that block incoming sunlight, may have also contributed to the lowering of temperatures over time. They also note that tree planting might not always produce this effect, such as in the boreal zone where increases in trees are linked with increases in humidity that way raise average temperatures."

Thermal Storage Systems in Air Conditioning
Building codes and energy regulations are instrumental in ensuring the safety, efficiency, and environmental impact of construction projects, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. They establish standards for energy performance, emission levels, and sustainability, thereby shaping the technological choices of builders and contractors. However, as of now, thermal storage systems are often not explicitly addressed in building codes, resulting in their underutilization.
To encourage the adoption of thermal storage systems in Pioneer AC, policymakers must update building codes to recognize and incentivize these innovative technologies. Firstly, by incorporating specific guidelines for the installation and operation of thermal storage systems, builders and HVAC professionals will have clear directions on how to integrate them seamlessly into their projects. This will ensure that the systems are effectively utilized to maximize energy savings without compromising safety and efficiency.
Secondly, energy regulations can be restructured to promote the adoption of thermal storage systems by offering tax incentives or rebates for buildings that incorporate such technologies. By providing financial incentives, building owners and developers will be encouraged to invest in these sustainable solutions, accelerating their widespread integration across the construction industry.
Moreover, policy changes should focus on education and awareness among industry professionals and consumers. By conducting workshops, training programs, and informational campaigns, stakeholders can stay informed about the benefits and proper implementation of thermal storage systems. This knowledge will empower them to make informed decisions and invest in technologies that promote energy conservation and reduce environmental impact.

When I was like 12 years old my violin teacher owned this peculiar music shop, and I would go there weekly for lessons. It was a narrow old pioneer house whose ground floor had been converted into a storefront and lesson rooms. After a while, a luthier had also moved in upstairs and set up a studio for making violins.
So, one day I'm going into the shop for my lesson. I head in the front door, and before I turn into the living room area where the main shop is, I look down the dark hallway at the rickety wooden stairs that lead up to the luthier's studio. The air smells like sawdust and lacquer. Just a little bit of light filtering in from the window behind me.
Something's on the stairway. A huge black animal is making its way down these steep, narrow stairs. I've never seen anything like this, I genuinely did not know an animal like this exists, and it comes right up to me, click-click-clicking slowly over the floor, long and tall and dark. There are wood shavings peppering its coat. It lifts its head up and its massive beast-face is virtually level with my child-face and I realize this is a gotdamb bizarro dog of some kind. It looks impossible but it's real and it's there, staring at me in total silence with a face the length of my arm. Then it does a 3-point-turn in the tiny dusty hallway and goes right back upstairs.
Turns out this was just the luthier's dog Seamus, a black borzoi of incredible height and length. anyway i'm just trying to say it was a disturbing set of circumstances under which i discovered what a borzoi is and everything in my life has felt very complicated since then

1 - The Magician
The 1st Arcanum in this position manifests itself as the energy of a "Pioneer" or "The Magician," reflecting how others perceive the individual as someone who possesses immense potential, leadership, and the capability to create and inspire. This energy radiates authority, confidence, and a pioneering spirit, making others see the individual as someone who can push boundaries and lead new initiatives. They often appear as people who hold the fire of creation, ready to take on challenges with courage.
However, this external perception of power might not always align with their inner reality. While the world sees them as bold and innovative, internally, they may struggle with doubts and the fear of failure. If this energy is negatively expressed, it can lead to overcompensation, where the individual might act overconfident or harsh, while feeling deeply insecure beneath the surface.
In its positive manifestation, the 1st Arcanum brings out a strong sense of innovation, leadership, and the drive to bring new ideas into reality. People are drawn to their magnetic energy, seeing them as trailblazers capable of making significant contributions to any field. The challenge for the individual is to balance this outward projection of power with an inner belief in their abilities, rather than relying solely on external validation.
2 - The High Priestess
The 2nd Arcanum in this position manifests itself as "The Secret" or "The High Priestess" in the Tarot. It reflects how others perceive the individual as someone mysterious, enigmatic, and deeply intuitive. They are often seen as keepers of hidden knowledge, possessing an air of wisdom and secrecy that draws people in. Their ability to understand the unseen and their natural inclination toward spiritual or mystical matters makes them appear insightful and almost otherworldly.
Internally, however, these individuals may feel detached from reality, lost in their own world of thoughts, illusions, and spiritual contemplation. They might struggle with balancing their inner truth and the external world, sometimes feeling misunderstood or isolated due to their deeper understanding of life's mysteries. When negatively expressed, this energy can manifest as secrecy, mistrust, and emotional distance. They might become withdrawn, overly secretive, or lost in illusions, unable to connect with others.
When positively aligned, the 2nd Arcanum enhances their intuitive abilities, allowing them to access deeper truths and guide others with their wisdom. They are seen as trusted confidants who can help others unravel life's mysteries. Their key challenge is to stay grounded while embracing their intuitive insights, ensuring they don’t lose touch with reality while navigating the spiritual and the mystical.
3 - The Empress
The 3rd Arcanum in this position manifests itself as "Femininity" or "The Empress" in the Tarot. It reflects how others perceive the individual as someone embodying nurturing energy, beauty, and creativity. Others may view them as a source of comfort and inspiration, someone who has the ability to foster growth and provide emotional support.
Internally, these individuals might feel a strong connection to family and heritage, particularly the feminine lineage. Their sense of identity often revolves around caring for others, creating beauty, and cultivating harmony in their surroundings. When negatively expressed, however, this energy can manifest as feelings of inadequacy or self-neglect, leading to issues with self-worth or the inability to express their nurturing side. They may also struggle with rejecting their femininity or overburdening themselves with responsibilities.
When positively aligned, the 3rd Arcanum enhances the individual’s ability to create abundance, support others, and cultivate an environment of love and care. They are seen as graceful and harmonious, able to create beauty in both their personal and professional lives. Their key strength lies in their capacity to nurture, whether in relationships, creative endeavors, or even business.
4 - The Emperor
The 4th Arcanum in this position manifests itself as "Masculinity" or "The Emperor" in the Tarot. It reflects how others perceive the individual as strong, authoritative, and someone who embodies leadership. This person is seen as a protector, a figure who takes responsibility for others, and someone who provides structure and stability. Their presence exudes a sense of command, making them natural leaders in various aspects of life, including family and work.
Internally, these individuals may feel a constant need to control their environment and take charge of situations. They have a strong sense of duty and responsibility, especially toward their family or close circle. However, when negatively expressed, this energy can manifest as excessive control, harshness, or even authoritarian behavior, pushing others away or creating unnecessary tension. They might struggle with accepting help or relying on others, leading to frustration or aggression when things don't go their way.
When positively aligned, the 4th Arcanum enhances the individual’s ability to lead with wisdom and strength. They become reliable pillars in their communities, offering support and guidance. Their actions are driven by responsibility, and they create an environment of security and order, both at home and in professional settings. The key to their success lies in balancing their need for control with the ability to trust and delegate, ensuring they don't overwhelm themselves or others with their strong energy.
5 - The Hierophant
The 5th Arcanum in this position manifests itself as "Knowledge" or "The Hierophant" in the Tarot. They tend to be regarded as mentors, transmitting wisdom and helping others find their path.
Internally, these individuals are driven by a desire to learn and spread knowledge, always seeking to understand the deeper meaning of existence. They are devoted to a mission of learning and teaching, often feeling a sense of responsibility to share their insights with others. However, when this energy is negatively manifested, they can become rigid, overly critical, and preachy. Their need to instruct others may turn into an obsession with being right, leading them to impose their views and stifle those around them.
When positively aligned, the 5th Arcanum enhances their ability to inspire and guide with compassion, using their knowledge to uplift others. They become figures of authority in matters of faith and learning, embodying a deep connection to tradition while remaining open to new ideas. Their energy flows when they strike a balance between being teachers and learners, continually evolving while helping others along their spiritual or intellectual journeys.
6 - The Lovers

Externally, they are viewed as individuals who value beauty, relationships, and emotional connection. They are often admired for their sense of style, their ability to create harmony in their environment, and the grace with which they interact with others. People see them as magnetic, with an aura of elegance and warmth that makes others feel comfortable around them.
When negatively manifested, others might perceive them as overly concerned with their appearance or with what others think of them. This can lead to superficiality or a tendency to seek approval and validation from their social circle. On the other hand, when positively aligned, the 6th Arcanum enhances their ability to form genuine, loving connections, bringing beauty, love, and balance into all aspects of their life, both in their relationships and within themselves.
7 - The chariot

To others, these individuals often appear unstoppable, focused on their goals, and willing to push through any obstacles that come their way. Their swift, decisive actions and leadership skills make them seem like natural-born achievers.
Externally, they are viewed as highly energetic and capable of motivating others, often taking the lead in moving things forward. They seem to thrive in competitive environments and are admired for their ability to stay one step ahead.
When negatively manifested, others may see them as reckless or too aggressive, rushing forward without fully considering the consequences. Externally, they may be perceived as people who naturally enforce rules and maintain balance, whether in their personal relationships or professional settings. Their approach to life appears structured, thoughtful, and purposeful, and they often inspire respect due to their strong ethical stance.
When negatively manifested, others might see them as overly rigid or judgmental, enforcing rules without flexibility and becoming harsh in their pursuit of justice. However, in their positive form, they radiate wisdom and the ability to make impartial, well-considered decisions that benefit everyone around them.
9 - The Hermit
The 9th Arcanum in the Portrait zone manifests itself as The Hermit in the Tarot. Others perceive these individuals as deeply introspective and wise, often seeming distant or detached from the hustle of everyday life. They come across as highly reflective and mature, someone who contemplates life's deeper meanings rather than focusing on surface-level interactions. Because of this, they can seem mysterious, reserved, and even somewhat cold to those around them, though their wisdom and insights are undeniable. They often act as advisors or quiet observers who provide profound knowledge when asked.
While others might admire their wisdom, they may also find them challenging to connect with on a personal level, as they tend to retreat into their own world of thoughts and reflection. Their solitary nature can create a perception of aloofness, but it also generates respect for their depth and intelligence.
When negatively manifested, these individuals can appear overly distant, arrogant, or self-absorbed, convinced that their understanding surpasses everyone else's. Their solitude may turn into loneliness or isolation, causing difficulties in forming meaningful relationships. On the positive side, however, their energy draws others toward them as guides or sages, as they are able to offer invaluable advice and understanding in complex situations, encouraging others to explore deeper truths.
10 - The Hermit
The 10th Arcanum in the Portrait zone manifests itself as The Wheel of Fortune in the Tarot. Others perceive these individuals as adaptable and fortunate, often experiencing highs and lows in life but seemingly always landing on their feet. They appear to have a natural connection to the cycles of destiny and are seen as flexible, able to navigate change and uncertainty with ease. People may view them as lucky or blessed, even when they seem to face difficult situations.
Internally, these individuals feel deeply connected to the flow of life, understanding that both positive and negative experiences are part of the same cycle. They often possess a calm acceptance of life's unpredictability and have faith that things will eventually turn out well. However, when negatively manifested, they may become passive, overly reliant on fortune, or fail to take responsibility for their circumstances. This can lead to others perceiving them as lacking direction or control over their own lives.
When positively aligned, individuals with the 10th Arcanum in this zone inspire others through their ability to embrace change and remain optimistic. They show how to ride the waves of fate gracefully, encouraging others to let go of excessive control and trust in the natural ebb and flow of life. Their light-hearted approach and belief in destiny often lead to remarkable success, as they seem to attract good fortune at just the right moments.
11 - Strength
The 11th Arcanum in the Portrait zone manifests itself as The Strength card in the Tarot. Others perceive these individuals as strong, both mentally and emotionally, with an impressive ability to overcome obstacles and handle challenges with grace. This energy makes them appear courageous and capable of handling difficult situations, often inspiring others to draw upon their own strength. People are naturally drawn to them for guidance, seeing them as capable of bringing calm and order even in turbulent times.
Internally, these individuals are driven by a deep sense of personal power and confidence. They have a quiet but profound belief in their ability to endure and persevere, even when faced with significant difficulties. However, when negatively manifested, they may become overbearing or attempt to control situations and people too rigidly, mistaking force for strength. In this state, they can come off as domineering or inflexible, pushing others away with their need to assert control.
When positively aligned, individuals with the 11th Arcanum in this position shine as natural leaders, demonstrating how true strength lies not in brute force but in inner resolve, patience, and understanding. They are able to gently guide others, creating an atmosphere of stability and trust, and are often seen as protectors or advocates for those who need support. Their ability to balance power with compassion makes them pillars of strength in their communities.
12 - The Hanged Man
The 12th Arcanum in the Portrait zone manifests itself as The Hanged Man in the Tarot. Others perceive these individuals as people who approach life from a different perspective, often appearing unconventional or detached from the material world. Their energy gives off a sense of sacrifice, surrender, or patience, as though they are willing to wait or let go of control to gain deeper spiritual or philosophical insights. This can make them seem mysterious or enigmatic to those around them, as they often resist the norms of society in favor of their inner truth.
Internally, these individuals are reflective, searching for meaning beyond what is easily visible. They are willing to endure discomfort or delay gratification to achieve a higher understanding or a deeper sense of purpose. When negatively manifested, they can come across as passive, stagnant, or even as martyrs, trapped in indecision or a state of inaction. They may struggle with moving forward, feeling stuck in their own thoughts or awaiting external change that never comes.
When positively aligned, the 12th Arcanum reveals a person who has mastered the art of surrender and trust in life's natural flow. Their patience, resilience, and ability to see things from alternative perspectives often inspire others, helping them navigate difficult circumstances with wisdom and grace. These individuals can guide others in finding peace amid uncertainty and in recognizing that sometimes, growth requires letting go.
13 - Death
The 13th Arcanum in the Portrait zone manifests itself as Death in the Tarot. Others perceive these individuals as transformative forces in life, often symbolizing profound change, renewal, or endings. They may come across as intense, mysterious, and even unsettling, as their energy often signals a break from the past or an unavoidable transition. People with this energy are seen as catalysts for transformation, able to bring closure to old situations and pave the way for new beginnings, though they might also be perceived as harbingers of sudden or unexpected changes.
Internally, these individuals are deeply connected to cycles of death and rebirth, understanding the necessity of letting go in order to grow. They are often reflective and accepting of the impermanence of life, recognizing that transformation is a constant. When negatively manifested, they may appear destructive, obsessive, or stuck in a cycle of loss, unable to release the past or move forward. Their energy can be experienced as overwhelming or disorienting to others, especially when they resist the changes they themselves need to undergo.
When positively aligned, the 13th Arcanum embodies a powerful force for renewal and regeneration. These individuals are capable of navigating life’s transitions with grace and insight, helping others accept change and embrace new possibilities. Their ability to bring closure and initiate rebirth makes them a guiding figure for others during times of upheaval or transformation, inspiring growth and resilience.

Joy I have to ask - what temperature do you think it is inside Wayne Manor?
Is it essentially outside temperature except where the fireplaces are? Does Alfred have a one man war against climate change? Is that why Bruce spends so much time in the basement?
Depending on which timeline you follow, Wayne Manor was built in the late 1800s. Having worked in giant historical homes, I'm telling you now it's a fucking pain in the ass to update the heating systems in those buildings. I know we've got comic book logic to contend with, and they've got massive generators in the basement to keep the cave running (sometimes it's turbines powered by the water flowing through the caves), but I also think it's plausible that to avoid damaging the historical facade of the building, you might walk around the house and see box fans shoved into the window frames during the summer because fuuuuck trying to install modern AC through 18th-century brickwork.
As for heat, well, for a frame of reference, the James J Hill house up here in MN—built roughly around the same time during the Gilded Age when the Waynes were pioneering industry in Gotham—was forced to rely on a boiler roughly the size of a steam engine to heat the house and used 250 tons of coal each year to keep it warm. That boiler provided hot water and ambient heat through steam radiators, but they also still had fireplaces in almost every room to try and compensate for the winter. The house was updated for modern heating and air conditioning within the last 40 years, but with a house that size and ceilings so tall, it's not particularly efficient. They still rely on box fans and space heaters to keep the space habitable during summer and winter.
New Jersey is not as far north as Minnesota, but the temperatures can still drop comparably low, especially when you factor in the seafront Gotham is on. So, while I do think they likely upgraded the heating systems at some point (they can't keep guzzling through coal like that), I also can't help but feel it's got to be cold as hell in that house unless they're being meticulous about lighting fires and airing every room out to prevent damp.
Because that's another thing. If you're not keeping your stone house warm, you risk damp and water damage, and I feel like Alfred would rather gnaw off his own arm than let Wayne Manor crumble to dust with black mold festering in the original French plaster.
So he's not so much fighting a one-man war against climate change as he's fighting a one-man war to keep the house dry. He's walking through rooms no one even uses, making sure the steam radiators are working and opening the windows a crack to let the condensation out.
Is he also turning off all the light switches as he goes? Yes. Is he always yelling, "Why is every screen in this house turned on if no one is using them?" also, yes.
Is Bruce also down in the cave huddled under an extra cape, overclocking the batcomputer to stay warm? Also a distinct possibility.
