Ah, to answer this very interesting question, we need a bit of a history lesson! Are you sitting comfortably?
Our story begins not with Hammond or LCPL, but with Gary Public Library.
So, back in 1952, Gary Public Library was providing service to far more than just Gary, and had been since the early 1900s. They covered the smaller towns and rural areas of Lake County, like Highland and Cedar Lake. In 1952 it was decided that these outlying regions should have their own library board and budget to look after their interests and Lake County Public Library began - sort of.
Back in those days, we were still contracting with Gary Public Library to provide all services and were sort of a sub-library of Gary. The boards met jointly and all expenditures of Lake County funds had to be approved by the Gary Public Library.
This continued until funding became... complicated. And somewhat contentious. Though the Lake County library was still paying Gary Public Library for their services, the contract needed to be renegotiated as Lake County grew and developed. Questions of where taxpayer money should go, and whether Gary taxpayers should subsidize Lake County library services outside of Gary arose.
On January 1, 1959, Lake County Public Library officially split from Gary Public Library and became an independent library system serving the not-Gary communities that Gary Public Library used to serve.
Now, you'll note I haven't mentioned Hammond in all this. The reason Lake County Public Library formed in the first place was in order to provide library services to the small towns and rural areas in Lake County that didn't have their own libraries.
Hammond, of course, is a city and they have always had their own public library, older even than Gary Public Library. They had no reason to join the little conglomerate of rural areas and small towns - and certainly no reason to become embroiled in the complicated funding and budgeting acrobatics being carried out in the neighboring communities.
Lake County today of course looks a lot different than it did in the 50s, and the name of our library - initially chosen to indicate that we served communities 'out in the county' (aka, not cities) - now is a little confusing. There are actually 7 library districts in Lake County now and each of the others has their own reasons for remaining separate.
Most of these reasons can probably be summed up in one word - taxes. Hammond residents don't pay taxes toward LCPL, and vice versa. The same goes for all of the different library districts.
Of course, we're all on great terms today and a card with any of the libraries in Lake County does get you access to most of the physical collection here at LCPL - and your LCPL card can do the same at the other libraries!

Okay but it's super interesting how
Din = Power = Ganondorf
Naryu = Wisdom = Zelda
Farore = Courage = Link.
Because Din, in the hylian creation myth, created the physical world. Naryu then created the laws - gravity, time, etc. And Farore finally created life - plants and people.
Din created the body, naryu the mind, Farore the soul.
And the triforce and its wielders so perfectly reflect that.
Ganon is physical power, he is big and intimidating and he breaks things. He is cunning and determined, but that's not what he focuses on. He is might makes right.
Zelda is wisdom and cleverness. She is stall tactics and information and team work. She is a powerful mage with a spine of steel, but that's not how she'll win. She is the pen being mightier than the sword.
Link is courage and persistence. He is the wild card sneaking behind enemy ranks, always moving, plunging into terrifying situations head first. He's a phenomenal fighter with a keen wit, but that's not what will get him through his challenges. He is bravery not being the absence of fear but the triumph over it.
They sit in perfect parallels to each other.
And ganon is reborn through his body - his resurrection is immortality. No matter how low he is cast, as long as he has a body he can claw his way back. He can cling to his power, build it ever higher.
Zelda is reborn through the magic of her bloodline. It's the accumulated knowledge handed down for generations, the unique power she must master, the skills she must develop to survive and get her kingdom out the other side intact. Even her name, the knowledge of herself, is handed down from all the way from the very first. Her ancestors knowledge of her future presence, her stability, is what gives her the edge.
Link is reborn in spirit. He is not bound by flesh or blood. Just like his wanderlust soul he can reappear in any time or place. His variation, his unpredictability, is exactly how he fights. It's what makes him so hard to pin down.
Ganons need to build strength means he can't chase after link. Links impulsiveness means zelda can outwit him. Zeldas stationary predictability means she's an easy target for ganon.
But the other direction?
Fire melts ice, ice redirects lightning, lightning burns fire.
And that's the very essence of the triforce.

This is what you want to prioritize. What are we looking at, what is going on, and what is the surrounding environment?
Keep it simple and get to the point

Try to use short, clear sentences and prioritize what the reader needs to know in the context of the post. We don't need to know that the tweet was posted at 2:08AM or what color rings someone is wearing. That doesn't really provide useful information. If you really want to provide some relevant details, be sure you get to the main point of the image first.
Context is Important

Why is the image posted there? What information does it lend to the content around it? Make sure the viewer knows what they need to know to understand how the image relates to the text and content partnered with it.
For a meme or a tweet screenshot, we don't need to know all the details or what the background looks like, we just need to understand the joke. For something like art or photography, you may want to include more details.
Don't Assume

Don't assume gender, race, and pronouns of the subject(s) of the image. If you can find this context in the post, on op's blog, or somewhere else you can include it, but try not to make baseless assumptions.
Alt Text vs Image Descriptions

Alt text is great for people using screen readers, but it isn't always the most accessible option. Alt text can be glitchy, the font size cannot be changed for those who need large text, and it doesn't show up at all until the image either loads or completely fails to load.
For this reason, a longer description in plain text in the body of the post is a more accessible option.
I suggest a short summary in the alt text so people can get the overview of an image and a longer description in the body of the post. For example, compare the image description and the alt text for the following image:

The Alt text provides the bare minimum of what you need to know to contextualize the image, while the ID expands on details that help to understand it and provides more details.

Try your best to use correct spelling and grammar, but transcribe accurately. Use clear language and concise sentences where possible. However: Don't censor words or correct spelling when transcribing something from the image. You want the description to be as accurate to the image as possible.

Always use plain text. Never use formatting like bold, italics, other fonts/font sizes/text colors, or text in all caps. If they appear in the original image, transcribe it in plain text like this:

Begin an ID with square brackets [[these]], followed by "ID:" or "Image:". End the description with "End ID" and a closed square bracket ] to signify the end of the descriptions.
Screenreaders and visually impaired people sometimes struggle with symbols and emojis. Transcribe these instead when possible!

The image description should be directly after the image, before any post caption or commentary.
Never use a readmore! If you delete the post or change your url the description is gone forever. It also makes the ID harder to reach in general, which is not accessible.

Make your post accessible from the start if you can. Don't post something without an ID then reblog it with a description so that people have a chance to spread the inaccessible version of the post if they "prefer" the one without the "clutter" of an ID. That's ableist. If you post something without a description then end up describing it later, edit the ID into the original post.

Diagram Center Guidelines for Image Description: I really suggest reading through this. It gives a much more comprehensive understanding of what is important when writing a description and has different sections for help describing all sorts of things like photos, art, comics, diagrams, charts, math, chemistry, and more!
