"RAILROADS ARE PREPARING FOR HARVEST HANDS," Winnipeg Tribune. July 29, 1913. Page 1. ---- Conference This Morning With Provincial Governments Re Excursion Dates ---- Preparations for the harvest excursions this fall are now well under way and the three Canadian railroads of the west are beginning to form definite plans concerning this annual transportation problem.
Passenger agents of the Canadian Northern, Grand Trunk Pacific, and Canadian Pacific were in conference this morning with representatives of the Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta governments concerning the most desirable date for starting the influx of laborers, and the probable number that will be wanted in the various districts. Their recommendations will be sent to the eastern head- quarters of their various roads where the final arrangements for the excursion trains will be made.
Need 40,000 Men. After conning over the present situation, it was decided that about 40,000 men will be needed to supply the demands of the three provinces this fall, and that the first contingent will be wanted here about August 18.
These men will be obtained chiefly from Ontario, Quebec and the Maritime provinces and the first excursion train from these points will probably start on August 15. Others will follow as rapidly as equipment can be handled.
Large Local Surplus. From the Manitoba government, Immigration Superintendent J. J. Golden attended the meeting, while Saskatchewan was represented by Thomas Milloy, immigration agent, and Alberta by R. J. Daley, publicity commissioner for the province. They stated that in the three provinces at present, there is an aggregate of some seven or eight thousand unemployed men. It is desired first to get these into the harvest fields, and the excursions from outside points have therefore been set back until the harvest will be well under way.
The rates to be charged are not yet decided upon, and will be left in the hands of the eastern passenger offices.

YES!!!!!!!!!!! OH YEAH BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (sickos) OH YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
#farming is NOT the enemy this country has been farmed for thousands of years but it's HOW we farm that decides everything#im sick of seeing massive fields with nothing to break up the monoculture. put some hedgerows back in that thang#it also mentions an (at least) 30% reduction in meat consumption that we must make to help achieve a healthy ecology#miserably the labour gov have not yet commited to the wildlife subsidy budget that previously fuelled this progress for this year#they clearly couldnt give less of a rats fart about the countryside or the environment if they tried.#anyway. this is still a GOOD development and if this government is sane (doubtful) they will commit to continuing#we must support our farmers bc otherwise farms will revert to intensive agriculture out of necessity or be sold off for development#ukpol

Quebec Labour Minister Jean Boulet has amended his law project, Bill 19, regulating youth employment in the province to allow children under 14 to work in agriculture, provided the business has a maximum of 10 employees.
The proposed law, tabled in March, would limit the number of weekly hours Quebecers 16 and under can work during the school year to 17. It also sets the minimum legal working age at 14 — with some exceptions for jobs like babysitting or tutoring.
But Boulet's amendment would allow small agricultural businesses to be exempt from the new minimum working age and employ children as young as twelve.
[...]
This new exemption echoes the demands of employers, who asked for more exceptions to allow children under 14 to work.
But there are concerns over the agricultural environment being risky as injuries in young people are frequent. Some doubt the ability of Quebec's labour regulator, La Commission des normes, de l'équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST), to ensure the safety of children in the workplace.

This is disgusting and disheartening, these people have entered our nation legally and yet are treated no better than slaves. The federal program is rife with loopholes and a severe lack of oversight and enforcement that allows these abused and exploitation to be widespread. For example employers can provide food at a cost but it must not charge the workers beyond a certain amount (around $11 or $12) yet these employers flagrantly ignore these regulations and charge up to $200 which can total half a paycheck from supremely subpar food. Employers are also supposed to allow workers access to stoves and fridges for the purpose of cooking and storing food yet pictures and videos have circulated of locked fridges and cabinets in these farms and labor camps. If a worker tries to report violations or speak out retaliation is common, a simple punishment is abusing the worker to another camp or simply discharging them from the program often without legal recourse or ability to challenge the actions. and to the people who go 'well they aren't US citizens so why should we care?' this is almost no better than slavery, to condine inaction or resisting reform is to invite an 'acceptable' form of slavery which pollutes and rots our nation just like it did during the 18th century. Plus it also creates economic disadvantages for American labor, this isn't a mandatory program these farms and the national associations that help run this program simply want dirt cheap labor that they can exploit and abuse with little hassle. If they could they would enslave fellow US citizens to do the labor for free, that's why it's imperative to end the loopholes and make sure everyone in our nation citizens or not aren't being exploited!!

this election feels so hollow even though it’s likely ostensibly gonna be a good outcome. labour really just sucks fucking ass rn huh
#if the tories lose bad enough to make lib dems the opposition though… a guy can hope#I think it’s the fact that this is the first general election I can vote in that’s making me lose my mind a little here#I have done basically nothing but read today. I DO know a whole bunch more abt voting systems and the nightmare the tories have been now tho#I’m just kinda like. okay so what happens next? bc labour WILL do some decent shit but they also. fucking suck.#planning to look into the local green party once I’m back at uni bc I could actually do stuff there#I think I’m just dealing with a little bit of whiplash going from doing a biology degree where Everything is about climate change#like unambiguously it gets brought up in every topic (I DO focus on ecology and agricultural stuff and not like genetics but still)#clear consensus from literally everyone you talk to that shit has to happen right the fuck now.#it’s not even like I’m unaware of the state of policy rn I KNOW it’s a nightmare to do anything but we at least TALK about it#and then this election where it’s barely a footnote. biggest thing is the sewage dumping everyone’s talking about and yeah fucking finally#but is that all you’ve got?? the labour manifesto is bleak. it has a section and the stuff they’re proposing isn’t bad but it’s so little#and yeah no they’ve changed the official line on the manifesto to ‘make Britain a clean energy superpower’#I SWEAR it was different a few days ago#maybe I’m being pessimistic bc their plans for clean energy if they actually do them could be huge especially if they manage it by 2030.#it’s just that I know what the targets are and they’re already pulling back on shit like EVs bc of the shift right and I am So Tired#two party politics is a curse. as much as reform is an actual nightmare them getting a decent vote share might actually be the thing that#gets people talking abt proportional representation again bc they are nothing if not good at being loud#did you know we had a fucking referendum in 2011 bc what the fuck. and it went SO BADLY even though people generally supported it#god idk I think I’m once again being naively optimistic about people and election coverage has been very good at knocking me down a bit#people generally are good. I have to believe this. but man the british public is making that really fucking hard#genuinely I think a good chunk of that is down to first past the post driving politics to be divisive and aggressive#like is it the only problem? fuck no. but it’s definitely poisoning the way this shit goes bc when all the parties do is jab at each other#what are we actually doing here#idk I’m gonna stop now but this is taking up a ridiculous amount of bandwidth rn I can’t wait for it to be over#already dreading what the next election could look like in 4 years if starmer continues to suck ass bc I don’t trust him to not like at all#luke.txt#I said i was done but I just looked at the lib dem manifesto and oh my god it’s actually pretty good on this? holy fucking shit

the thing about Hawai’i politics is that. You absolutely need to criticize the local government. But you also need to stand the economic and political politics of living in a place where the local government doesn’t have an iota of the power of the mega corporations like Hilton and Sheraton that run mega resorts here, nor the billionaires like mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison, or Jeff bezos that run second homes here or have quasi-feudal estates or exert far far more power than the relatively progressive county and state governments
like. You have to clock what it is that a man worth over 100 billion dollars purchased 98% of an island. What that’s like. What power does a city councilman who represents that island in a council have over a man worth over 100 billion who both owns the land people live on AND the hotels they work at
#A) HI runs and is far more like a separate nation than another U.S. state even if under mainland colonial control#B) us imperialism is and always has run through the interests of mega corporations that may not be *officla* government actors#So so so many issues boil into the market forces in a Neo imperial world in a place with a long history of colonialism#schools struggle to keep teachers and local businesses struggle to keep employees because the wages don’t match the insane cost of living#Local agriculture and food industries struggle because the cost of supplies and cost of living for farmers#Makes their produce more expensive than most people can afford so we have to buy from Walmart#Young people and families keep leaving and there’s increasingly severe labour shortages for basically ever job in terms of#Everything from minimum wage local jobs to local doctors teachers and lawyers#So every aspect of local society struggles to keep going#And all those deficits make hi a harder and harder place to live#There’s market forces that are just. Beyond us all#also the most powerful gov actor by far is the national military and you think city council has more control than the pacific fleet? PFFFF

"Packers' Help Problem Solved," Winnipeg Tribune. October 28, 1943. Page 13. ---- PACKING plants in the province which 10 days ago required between 700 and 800 new workers today had all their requirements filled excepting for a few experienced butchers which they would employ if they could get them. Within the next week the Farm Help Service said these probably would be available.
With their labor quotas supplied the plants were now in a position to avoid a pile-up in stock shipments at their yards such as occurred 10 days ago. Many of their new workers have to be trained for a short time to reach. the required standard of efficiency.
Most of the new help came from farms in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, a direct result of the intensive canvass by the Farm Help Service during the last three weeks. About 200 came from Saskatchewan.
Help is still being solicited for other essential industries, such as lumber camps, pulpwood mills, fuel wood camps and the base metal mines. Volunteers are still coming in and allocated to where they are most needed by the selective service board.
The full time requirements for these industries, it was stated to- day, may not be filled because there are not enough men. Selective service officials today said there were hopes they could come reasonably near it but in the meantime the only course was to place the workers where it was considered their services were most needed.

A global perspective towards fostering a just transition in the agri-food sector: bridging generations for sustainable change.
Agri-food systems are key levers towards climate change, while at the same time being among the largest emitters of greenhouse gasses and being affected by climate change. While the need to transform agri-food systems to achieve climate adaptation and mitigation is recognised, the meaning and application of just transition principles remains underexplored.
