i find it really kinda gratifying? nice? that s2 is so far leaning into the sort of childishness that edward often exhibits, like a lot of the meta i agreed with pre s2 was about his Hurt Inner Child and how a lot of his hurt is childish either in origin or in display (and often both) and i think so far s2 is validating all of that. i particularly like the recurring theme of the “eddie” nickname as a sort of signifier of childishness - “hornigold” calls him that sort of derisively the whole time they’re talking and izzy calls him that when he’s essentially telling him to grow up and take responsibility - and like i’ve said this before but ed is really like.. ugh he’s such a Pretend Play guy like i adore him, the way he gets into roleplay is so charming and sweet to me but it’s also very childish, like very Inner Child Moment.. i never ended up writing a real manifesto about DID ed but tjs ed&trauma post makes basically the same points anyway, and i just find it so lovely how they’re doing the sort of wide eyed naive trusting eddie moments with him, like in the tub scene where he cries about having no friends and in his mind palace where he gets so upset about hornigolds character being mean to his bc he’s breaking social norms and just being a general dick, like he expects sort of social fairness that doesn’t happen and gets really upset and takes it very personally when people are mean to him - happens in s1 with the party as well where he has sort of a naive understanding of social exchange where he REALLY wants to have mutually nice interactions with people and takes it really personally if the other person is a dick to the point of it like destroying his very image of himself. idk like the way they’re portraying his trauma as penetrating into or originating from really deep like all the way into his young childhood is so cool to me, he shows a lot of Ex Unsafe Child behaviors and like this is the 1700s but like. creative therapy where he would be allowed to express himself via acting out little scenes or dance or whatever would be soooo good for him i think he would be so happy.

Being a middle regressor is so weird. Like? Age 11-15 is a weird era in and of itself because you still play pretend with friends, but you can't take theme parks and mascots seriously anymore. You're still into some "kid stuff" (dress up games and Disney movies), but you're actively repulsed by anything babyish or baby-related (making the majority of the agere tag very much Not The Vibe). You're allowed to watch a rated R movie with parent's approval and play *some* violent videogames, but you're still not allowed to read every Shakespeare play because some of them have "mature themes." You don't really NEED a caretaker to do things for you as much as you need someone to listen to you talk about roblox and supervise you *just in case* you set something on fire.

It took forever for me to even realize I WAS regressing. Like, I knew I was regressing, but I just wasn't "baby" enough, so it didn't make sense. How could I feel both like a child but have an active interest in not-exactly-kid-friendly things like Skyrim and anime?

The answer is I was in teen/preteen mode.

It's not that age 11 is the death of all things immature; once you get to be an adult, you can more confidently navigate themed roleplay experiences "in character," and your repulsion for baby-related stuff kinda falls away too. It's just that when you're 14, you don't know how to be both Mature and Not Embarrassing, so you kind of give up on a lot of things.

Seeking

Get cuddles! From your friends, caregiver(s), family, stuffed animals, toys! You can wrap yourself in blankets to imitate a hug!

Let your hands explore whenever you travel. Snow, grass, leaves, rain, mud, sand, rocks, maybe dogs you pass by (ask the dog owners first for permission)

Kinetic sand, clay, slime, beads, crinkly plushies, textured books for babies, sensory mats, brushable toys

If you're an older little or even a middle, cooking! especially dough making, but handling food involves a lot of touching

Speaking of, play with your food! Eat with your hands, explore the textures in an approachable way

Toy cars and fidget spinners (anyone remembers these?)! Beyblades! I love when you can feel the spinnies!

Let someone brush you, or get a scalp massager as an alternative! Maybe you brush them, feeling your hands on the hair? Both are good!

Wear thick, warm clothes! Especially since it's already December (!). The heavy blankets and coats always make me feel regressy!

If you're still seeking touchies but not as overwhelming as hugs, hand holding! And its universal, it can be a person, a stuffie, a doll, Or even a hand warmer if you're closeted! something about my hands not being lonely is very comforting

Another subtle touchy are keychains! They don't leave a residue and come in a variety of textures, or can even stimulate other sensories (like holographic for eyes, or be electronic and make sounds for the ears)

Avoidant

Have your baby wipes on you, maybe a hand sanitizer in case a bad touchy appears!

If you're fem leaning, have a small box designated for the jewelry/hair things you're wearing, to have a safe spot to put them in whenever they overwhelm you

Invest in hair detanglers! Bonus points if they're designed for kids! it minimizes the pain of brushing your hair

Make sure your friends and caregiver(s) are aware of your boundaries, and settle on alternatives to display affection. They should want the best for you!

wear something to indicate your limits, ex. "no hugs", "ask before touching", "no touching". It can be a pin, a bracelet, or even a sign on the sunflower lanyard if you have one

be thorough while buying clothes. Sometimes it's one small detail that makes the clothing uncomfortable. Never rush yourself!

As tedious as it is, you may want to consider cutting out clothing tags (i recommend keeping them if they have irregular washing instructions), and tags on your stuffies too!

baby towels, baby blankets! They may be smaller but way less harsher than their adult counterparts

Keep track what textures you like and dislike, with other sensories! It makes looking after yourself easier if you know what to look for

It's okay if something overwhelms you and you retreat. It's your coping mechanism and nobody else's, you get to dictate your tempo
