"Vice President Kamala Harris is proposing to provide federal funding to cover home care costs for older Americans, aiming to help the “ sandwich generation " of adults caring for aging parents while raising their children at the same time.
Appearing Tuesday on ABC’s “The View,” Harris talked about taking care of her mother when she was dying and personally experiencing the challenges many families face when seeking affordable in-home care for their aging loved ones.
She promised that if, elected in November, she will seek to expand Medicare, the federal health insurance program for older Americans, so that it covers long-term care and includes services like in-home aides. Harris said aides could help seniors do things as simple as preparing meals or putting on sweaters because it is “about dignity for that individual. It’s about independence for that individual.”
Her proposal is a new one just a month out from Election Day but the issue is one that President Joe Biden's administration has been working on for years.
In an effort to soften the effects of inflation, the White House promoted as part of Build Back Better, its legislative agenda that stalled on Capitol Hill years ago, steeply increased federal spending for child care as well as for seniors. After Build Back Better collapsed, the Biden administration continued to promote increasing spending for what it calls “the care economy,” a cause Harris has continued to mention after replacing Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket.
“These plans are common sense. They can help family caregivers work and save both families and the federal government money by allowing seniors to stay in their homes instead of being sent to nursing homes,” the Harris campaign said in a fact sheet detailing her proposal. “Medicare at Home will also reduce hospitalizations.”
As part of a blitz of media interviews she’s been doing in recent days, Harris sat down after her appearance on “The View” with radio personality Howard Stern, who said that his mother is 97. Taking care of an elderly parent, he said, “will bankrupt you.”
Such costs have increased pressure on adults caring for their parents and kids simultaneously. In 2019, roughly 30% of family caregivers of older Americans lived in households that included children or grandchildren, according to AARP.
Harris would likely have to work with Congress to achieve key parts of her proposal. Harris’ campaign points to past, similar proposals projected to cost $40 billion annually, but says much of that can be offset by savings achieved through efforts begun by the Biden administration to expand Medicare’s ability to negotiation prices with major drug manufacturers.
Harris is also promising to further expand Medicare to include hearing and vision coverage, while changing existing rules that can allow federal authorities to seize a deceased beneficiary’s home to recuperate costs. [Note: I'm sorry the current rules fucking what] The campaign fact sheet says that practice “means that those homes are not passed on to the seniors’ children, which particularly harms rural and minority families.”"

I can't remember if it was said anywhere but are we ever gonna get the exact reason why Bess isn't willing to join Cedar in the clan (if there's more to it than what she said when they first met about oakclan)? Or if it's not a spoiler territory, what is the reason? 👀
It's mostly just what happened with Oakclan + the fact that she's lived on her own for long enough that she's been able to completely demonize the clans in her own mind. She imagines joining the clan would immediately mean being judged for everything she does, being told what to do at every moment, and losing everything she enjoys about her life.
She hasn't even tried to imagine a scenario where living with them would be good, because she just doesn't want to do it

DATV Mini-Rant about the lack of Lyrium Potions in this Game
A small thing that immediately made my stomach drop when playing DATV was the fact that there are no lyrium potions.
I did an elective on game design in university and chose Origins as my game of choice for my final essay because I always loved how much the game incorporated the world/lore in its game mechanics! Call it pathetic or sad (I won't blame you lmao) but this series was the first video game that engaged me so deeply with its story-telling that I wanted to dissect it. That's why I'm focusing on the lack of magical cocaine in a fantasy game series.
Lyrium is a substance that serves as a game mechanic and a major lore/world-building element. It's use is essential if you play the game as a mage or have party members that are mages - it replenishes mana in game, its use is central to being a mage within the story (harrowing, rituals, etc...), and it's a major export/plot relevant resource that is important to the world at large.
So imagine my surprise when I boot up DATV for the first time and there's no lyrium potions as a mage character. My main interest in the game series was for its lore and story (RIP) so I didn't look too hard into developer interviews or videos about the combat itself - it would either be good or bad, but that wasn't my main draw to the game. I kept playing, wondering if I would ever unlock another slot for potions, perhaps, but then it was abundantly clear that it wasn't the case.
It's a small thing, but popping a lyrium potion mid-combat has the same effect that hearing people say 'Maker's breath' and 'Thank the Maker' does. It's this little bit of world-building that reminds me that I'm playing a Dragon Age game. It's not just a 'mana potion' or some other glowy blue magic vial...it's this substance that's important to the world and that has a reason to be there beyond rejuvenating my mage.
It's the major export of Orzammar -> the pillar of its economy.
It's the substance that allows waking mages to enter the Fade -> it allowed me to save Connor Guerrin with the aid of other mages.
It's the substance that the Chantry uses to leash it's templars through addiction -> an addiction I encouraged Cullen to overcome in DAI.
It's the substance used in the Rite of TRANQUILITY.
It's the substance that allows my warrior character to take on the templar specialization in each game -> Alistair and Ser both talk about lyrium and its relevance to training (in DA2 you just do it lmao)
It's the substance burned into Fenris's skin by Danarius.
It's the literal blood of the Titans -> lyrium veins are literal veins (such a cool design choice in DAI to make them look like blood capillaries!)
And all the time in DAO, DA2, and DAI my mage characters were downing this substance like there was no tomorrow.
Even though the combat changed in DA2 and DAI they still kept lyrium potions for mages. Even though they simplified herbalism from DAO in the next two games, they still required the player to interact with the world and find the ingredients for these potions. It was this gameplay mechanic that linked the player to the world -> I know that I need blood lotus to set shit on fire, elfroot for healing potions/lyrium potions, etc... It was cool game design, having game mechanics and lore interconnected like this.
(Not saying that picking up dozens of elfroots was fun or the best game design, btw -> but it's just an example of how they linked the world and game mechanics together, and I like the intent behind it! Cool design does not equal effective design lmao)
What do we get in DATV? No lyrium, whatsoever, just healing potions.
Potions we don't even have to work to find or get crafted! Just break some green shit and there it is! We don't pick up ingredients or discover unique flora to each of these Northern Areas for our own use. We don't loot potions or ingredients from corpses, sacks, boxes, chests (etc...) to replenish our own stock. A healing potion in this game is not a potion you craft, made from ingredients you found, it's a button I press on my controller. It's lost that immersive link - especially when your companions can toss another one at you while being effectively immortal in combat.
The only new flora we hear of is Broma's Bloom which I did like the lore behind! It's used in dye to colour the Warden's armour and its growth is a sign that the damage of the Blight is lessening. I love that! That's a cool bit of lore! Especially since it's named after Andraste's mother in a land that is supposed to be extremely religious. Geographically unique flora and fauna (biodiversity) is just as important as architectural design when designing an area - DAI did this amazingly well with the different creatures and plants we could run into in each area!
The first time we meaningfully talk about lyrium is when we go to Kal Sharok for the first time - a decent amount of game time since the beginning of the game, depending how fast you play. And then, when we get there, the lyrium looks like a bunch of crystals from a 'grow your own lyrium' kit. The absence of lyrium from the game world and mechanics is something that was very hard for me to overlook considering its importance to every previous entry. Especially since in this game we address the fucking Titan's and what the fuck happened to them.
Just...imagine playing a mage in Dragon Age and not using lyrium?
This game is a death of a thousand cuts - so many small, meaningful world-building elements and mechanics brushed off - before fucking godzilla comes along and nukes it all with the handling of the main story/lore.

Just one of the many great tragedies of Mishanks' relationship is that sometimes Shanks wants to feel wanted just as he is, that even beyond the strength he is worth the effort he is worth being loved and unfortunately that just isn't something Mihawk can offer him it's just not something he can do, not as he is now at least. That's a level of emotional maturity that he just does not possess to be able to disentangle the strength from the man that makes no sense to him. Strength is all there is. Shanks is a person, has a life outside of his strength, his power is just another aspect of who he is but for Mihawk strength is his whole person, if he is not strong then he is nothing. If shanks is not strong well then....he's nothing to him.
And God that's a lonely way to live.

What to Expect From an Aged Care Home
An Aged Care Home is a place where you can receive help with daily living tasks like showering, getting dressed and going to the toilet. You’ll also be provided with meals and social activities. If you require clinical care you’ll have access to a GP, nurses and allied health services like dieticians, physiotherapists or speech pathologists as needed. You can choose to share your room or enjoy more privacy in a private suite. Your room will come with furniture and furnishings, including a bed, bedside table, wardrobe/drawers, armchairs and basic bathroom supplies. Some Aged Care Homes will allow you to bring personal items, such as photographs and artworks, to decorate your space.
You’ll pay a variety of fees when you live in an Aged Care Home. Depending on your financial situation you may be required to pay an accommodation fee, a basic daily fee and a means-tested fee. You may be able to have these fees subsidised by the Australian Government.
A key recommendation of the Royal Commission was a star rating system to help people compare providers. The My Aged Care website now displays star ratings for all aged care homes across Australia, with three stars indicating good quality, four stars meaning high quality and five stars indicating excellent quality. The ratings are based on compliance, residents’ experience, quality measures and staffing. The ratings are a good starting point, but there’s much more to consider when choosing an Aged Care Home.
One of the biggest concerns is that a number of Aged Care Homes have been given five stars but don’t meet government standards. This could include not having enough staff or not having a suitable ratio of staff to residents. If you find that a home you are interested in has been awarded a five-star rating but doesn’t meet your needs, you can ask the My Aged Care team to reconsider their assessment.
It’s important to visit a potential Aged Care Home to get a feel for the place. You can observe the quality of food being served, talk to residents and their families and ask questions about what life is like in the home. Visiting during lunchtime is a great time to see the type of meals that are offered and how well they are received by the community.
While the quality of food, services and facilities are the main considerations for many when choosing an Aged Care Home, you’ll also want to consider your budget and lifestyle. The cost of living in an Aged Care Home varies significantly, so it’s worth doing your research. If you’re worried about the costs, an Aged Care Advocate may be able to assist.
Aside from accommodation and care services, you’ll need to cover living expenses like electricity, gas and water. If you’re eligible for the Australian Government subsidies, this will be reflected in your accommodation and basic daily fee. If you don’t have the funds to pay for the full cost of care, you can enter subsidised Aged Care Homes by completing an assessment with My Aged Care.
My Horizon Community Services was created for people with special needs, friends and families who need a better way to access individualised disability support. We provide a wide range of tailored, flexible and quality disability services and support coordination for people living with disabilities for their choice and needs. homest[ar/uck] posting. this was meant to be supplementary to the gerome comic as him 'explaining the joke' but i uhhhhhh forgot.
i'm not much for crossovers in the the traditional sense, but it IS one of my favorite character exploration exercises to just go like 'if x media existed in this universe, who would and would not be a fan of it?'. and these ones are pretty notorious and always very fun to mess with for that and so here we are

Prompt 180
Danny looked at Wes, and Wes looked at Danny, both of their eyes saying the exact same thing: What the fuck is even happening right now.
Apparently they can be summoned. Apparently, a cult from a different dimension tried to summon something and got them instead. Apparently their bodies got shrunk, or de-aged or however one wanted to explain it. APPARENTLY, this universe has heroes, and apparently they seem to be their universe’s equivalent to two of the villains here.
Honestly, these “Cheshire” and “Riddler” people couldn’t be that bad compared to the Fentons. What are the chances they’ve committed war crimes or joined a government branch to legally vivisect things? That’s right, no chance. Probably.
They should probably leave the hero-people to their freakout and find a way home.

Interpreting Peri's insistence on Da Rules as a coping mechanism.
Cause if he starts questioning them, what's stopping him from getting his brother back? Why did he ever let Timmy go in the first place? Da Rules have to be written in stone, they have to be keeping his fellow fairies safe, they have to have made Timmy happier, because if they aren't all of that, what the fuck did Peri suffer all of that time without him for?
