Publisher is Pro

Here’s my second installment of my thoughts on the Affinity Publisher beta release. An update has come out since and it weighs in at a whopping 1GB! There is a lot going on in this app.

After some playing around with Publisher, looking through menus, settings, and toolbars it was plainly obvious that this app is not a dumbed down consumer level design program. It feels like a professional production ready application. Now I don’t know what sort of separation or imposition tools it may have, but from the standpoint of getting a document ready for high-quality output from a commercial printer, it looks like it’s got the right stuff.

I will be generally comparing the features to InDesign CC, which is what I use daily for work. 

It’s a page layout app, so that means lots of palettes. Just like InDesign you can stack them, or dock them, or tab them, in any way you want, and they stay there after quitting and reopening the program. I can’t tell if you can save the arrangements yet, like you can with Workspaces in Adobe apps. The top toolbar has a lot of customizing options.

I decided to give it a quick test drive by recreating a postcard I had just designed for work. The first thing I noticed, thankfully, was that Publisher could work from a file stored on a remote drive. Unlike Adobe, perhaps Affinity says this activity is actually supported! Proportional scaling of objects is on by default, so no need to hold down Shift any longer! Also, in a surprise, Publisher picked up all of the formatting attributes of InDesign text when copying from InDesign and pasting into Publisher which made it easy to rework this postcard design. Over all the process went pretty smoothly, with most of the hiccups I think being my unfamiliarity with the Affinity way of doing things. For instance I’m still having a little difficulty figuring out how the Place and Picture Frames work together. If you just place something, it gets embedded, but if you place something into an active picture box then it gets linked to the original. I also couldn’t figure out how to edit a Picture Frame after it contained content. In ID you just switch to the Direct Selection tool while the frame is active and you can edit it’s points as any other vector object. I couldn’t do that in Publisher. It was also not clear when you had the Picture Frame selected or its content. Most tools and operations I wanted to use were there but in different places, so at first blush it feels just as capable as ID, at least for something like this. Doing a long document may tell another tale, but that’s a subject for another post.

I noticed an interesting command in the File menu: Save History with Document. I don’t know if this is a feature of the other Affinity apps, but saving your history/undos is a great new feature.

My conclusion so far is that Adobe should be worried.
