Last book: The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz; set in 1911, it's about a young girl who runs away from her abusive family and ends up working as a servant for a Jewish family. it's been a very long time since i've read a book aimed for a younger audience, and i was very taken with how much compassion and care Schlitz wrote the main character and the way she doesn't shy away from writing the tensions that come with the main character's position.

Looking forward to: for the immediate future, getting my enrollment for school squared away and done with!!! but also really looking forward to going to shanghai in march/april. i haven't been back since i was 12 so i'm excited to be able to travel the city as an adult this time around :3

thinking about the differences between michael and noah at this late night hour and how they're raised ultimately impacts the way they present themselves… noah is raised in a house where toxic masculinity is perpetuated. his father is narrow minded and expects to have a son that enjoys sports, gaming, and shuns femininity. his mother similarly has views on how 'average boyhood' should be, even if noah's antics annoy her. so as a result, noah spends his adolesence "hating" girly things and although he mellows in adulthood, he still acts like he's ABOVE acts of self-care on that "no pain, no gain" bullshit. as a parent, pietro holds traditional standards that stem from the way he was raised, however he knows his father was problematic and thus he walks a tight line of wanting to uphold culture and wanting to be a modern parent. rosaria, meanwhile, holds "hippy sensibilities." she never taught carlo or michael things like color having a gender, she never lashed out at michael for kissing his sister's dolls, and she always let them express their feelings and encouraged them to communicate how they feel. now being the youngest amongst antonella, angela, and [slightly older than] fiora meant that he was frequently exposed to media his sisters liked in the way carlo wasn't because this is how his sisters played and bonded with him! and even despite that, michael still enjoyed boyish movies and tv shows about action and bold, daring adventurers. so, michael grows up, grows out his hair, has relatively colorful furniture [because rosie encouraged color] and doesn't think twice about wearing certain colors on his clothes. plus he feels women are inclined to feel like they can speak and be themselves around a man who doesn't come across as aggressive or cold. he deeply enjoys when zoe combs through his hair or styles it, viewing it as relaxing and as a form of affection through her touch. in contrast, as an adult noah has to be forced to have a spa day or do skin care routines with angela. later in the aftermath, he thinks: 'wow, i do look better.' i think this mentality changes the longer he stays employed by angela. when their paths cross as adults, noah and michael don't shun each other for their preferences. michael thinks noah needs to loosen up a little while noah knows that michael isn't weak. he can actually be scrappy, he is Sal's nephew after all.

Happy Mother’s Day, what was Dancing-Hands, Arnoss, Nyrhen, Farell and Vaalin mothers like?

Mother's day isn't for another few weeks.

-Dancing-Hands's mother was, in her younger years, an imperial guard as they were investigating the Kami rifts during the Era of Enlightenment with the Jukai's help. After the creation of the Merge gates, she married a kitsune of the Jukai she had worked with, who later became Dancing-Hands' father. She was the one to initially introduce Dancing-Hands to origami, but their relationship didn't fare too well along the years. His parents had very little authority on Dancing-Hands come his forties, and she regrets what happened to him. They've met again since and she knows he's alive, but it's been tough to rebuild things.

-Arnoss didn't have a singular "mother", that's not how the Family's typically raises children, he was under the care of all the adult Beldruns. As far as biological parents, he's never met his mother (at least he doesn't think so), his egg was bought from another family that couldn't support any more Ghavaleks. This is also not uncommon in the Family between caravans that trust each other.

-Nyrhen's mother was incredibly proud of her boy, even if he didn't do anything particularly glamorous or important. He was always Perfect to her eyes. Also she was a Lorwyn elf, so, y'know, the baggage that comes with that. Weapon-carver, some of which were deemed worthy of being used by Perfects.

-Farell's mom is Lady Leana Javori, born Bassola. She's cunning, positive, and confident. She's well-versed in politics and etiquette. She uses them as she needs to, but isn't fond of what comes with it, so she sometimes ignores convention when she thinks they're wrong.

Her birth name is an old, powerful and respected one on Fiora, and she very much married under her station when she did a newly ennobled merchant and had to give up her name for his when she did. She further mudded her name by carrying to term a bastard child from a shapeshifter who tricked her, and giving him her birth name. Despite the events of that night, she loves Farell just as much as she does her human children. She encouraged Farell into finding his own way, to be proud and keep his head high. The aristocracy may see him as lesser, but it's their loss if they underestimate her eldest son.

-Vaalin's mother was killed during the current phyrexian invasion, so he's still processing that, especially considering he had to keep working after learning of her death, alone in his head for long periods of time. She was a Vodalian merfolk from the Volshe caste, a mathematician, who had briefly studied at Tolaria (of the Depths). She joined a diplomatic mission to the surface world and met Vaalin's father, a human, there. She laid Vaalin's egg not too long after coming back from that year-long expedition. Knowing the xenophobic caste system underlying Vodalian society would be very harsh on a half-human, she sought refuge for her and her child in Tolaria's waters, where minds were more progressive.

There, she raised her child by herself within the Academy's reach, trying her best to shield him from the disdain and hatred that inevitably filtered through even in the school. Most students at Tolaria of the Depths have vodalian origins and culture after all, be it recent or older. She had her concerns when he specialized in temporal studies and might have tried to push him towards more practical studies. His achievements of the past few years on Dominaria and other worlds had placated her doubts though.

it's weird, right. i've gotten into some (shall we say) heated debates with a friend over the kind of audiences our games should reach for. i've argued that genre familiarity or games literacy shouldn't be an assumption, and while i've softened on that point, i do think it's worth considering. because i, personally, don't want someone to come into my story for the unique queer rep, and be just utterly bamboozled by the mechanics when they don't know how to play a strategy game. tutorials are worth it, difficulty settings are worth it, and above all playtesting outside "core gamers" is worth it.

the thing is, like, i am creating with a bit of an assumption about my own audience. see, i'd love to make something that some teen finds randomly and gets their life changed by it, but in practice most of the people who have actually played something like fiora and had their lives changed by it were already adults. people in their 20s or 30s who had already been through a lot of what my characters had been through. and i'm okay with courting that audience primarily.

as i delve into more "mature" subject matter, talking about trans rights and sex work and the rise of fascism, i'm realizing that my own assumed audience is people who can handle these issues with as much or more care than i do. i'm not aiming Angie Nyx's Ideal SRPG towards teens, and frankly there's already plenty of tactics rpg's geared towards teens. i'm making games for, you know, me. for us.

Fiora: 15. Who does your character look up to and who do they despise?

It's sort of a cliche, but Fiora always idolized her mother the most growing up; she's the whole reason she got into the archery discipline in the first place. As a child, she'd beg her mother to tell her stories about her time as the Seawolf, and then drag Fergus and some of the servants into reenacting the stories.

As for despise... Honestly man, if it's not Howe, it's gotta be Loghain. She could not get behind any of his reasons for staging a coup in the middle of a Blight. Add to that working with Tevinter slavers and Rendon Howe, the man who murdered her family, and... yeah. I imagine she respected him before for his tactical genius and military might, but after Ostagar and learning all the shady shit he's done, her opinion of him took a nosedive right into the gutter.

Marian: 22. What is your character most afraid of?

The funny answer is centipedes.

The non-funny answer is not living up to her father's ideals; for all that Marian likes to appear tough and uncaring, if you put her in front of a Fear demon, it would turn into Malcolm and rip into her for not protecting the family, for not defending her fellow mages, for being selfish and cruel and a disappointment.

The real Malcolm, of course, would never say those things, but Marian still feels like her father wouldn't be proud of the woman she's become. It takes her a long time (plus some therapy and some loving from a certain former chantry brother) before she comes to terms with that and moves on.

Hildegarde: 18. What is your character’s relationship with their parents/the people that raised them?

So, Hildegarde is the youngest of four. Her mother remarried her father after her first husband passed away from old age (arranged marriage; there was no love there, but she did love Hildegarde's father). She already had her first three kids from that marriage, with their ages being 13, 10, and 8 when Hildegarde came.

When Hildegarde was born, her mother passed away from complications during the birth, so she never knew her. Her father doted on her, to the point of being smothering and overprotective, though Hilde was a lonely child so she adored her father. He hated the idea of having to send her to the Circle when her magic manifested, but as a devout man, he relented. He wrote to Hildegarde on a weekly basis and sent her gifts, which she appreciated, but it also had the unintended side effect of making the other mages at the Circle dislike her, viewing her as a spoiled brat.

And, as a not-so-fun bonus, two of her half-siblings hated her, blaming her for their mother's death. The eldest didn't, he's mature enough to realize it wasn't her fault, but he was also old enough that he was being drawn more into preparing for his adult responsibilities, and thus never had much time to spend with Hilde before she was sent to the Circle. Her other two siblings became templars, so that was an added tension that didn't help their relationships.
