The Helena diaz of it all has me fascinated. I’ve said for a long while that Eddie’s real issues are his mommy issues and this episode just cemented for me that we’re gonna explore that and deal with it.

Because it’s Helena who forced Eddie to grow up to fast - because her husband wasn’t around much - so she pushed Eddie into de facto parent and husband role ls - selfishly filling her needs and ignoring the damage it was doing to her son (it is a form of abuse in my book).

Eddie then had the audacity to fall in love with and marry Shannon and get her pregnant. It’s why Helena was always so off with Shannon - she was punishing her. She is also punishing Eddie for all of this and his refusal to return to El Paso only cemented further her bitterness and resentment.

Now she does have Ramon back she doesn’t need Eddie any longer to fill that role so she is still punishing him and part of that is tied into her glee over now getting to parent Christopher - something she has always been intent on doing the doppelgänger just gave her the opportunity- as well as allowing her to further punish her son and his love of Shannon.

Her barbed comments about building a pool were all about showing what she can provide Christopher - how she is parenting him better than Eddie - it’s part of her mind games - making Eddie feel like more of a failure as a parent to his son.

The reality of course is that the reverse is true - Helena’s parenting is all superficial, flash and showy - it isn’t the hard day to day parenting when things get tough and you have to be the bad guy. While Eddie has made mistakes, there is nothing superficial, flash, or showy about his parenting. It’s why bucks comments about Eddie being a great dad are so important.

Eddie feel like a failure right now and that he is entirely to blame for everything. But in reality, while he does bear a bit of the responsibility, the truth of the matter is that he needs to learn and deal with the fact that all of it actually stems from Helena and her abuse of her young son - Shannon never stood a chance just like Eddie never has.

Snippet Saturday

Here's another snippet from my coda for 'On Purpose', tentatively named 'I Hold it All When I Hold You'. Currently at just over 3k words and almost done!

Eddie, becoming more of a fan of theatrics as he let go of the repressed parts of himself, simply dragged his left hand out of his lap and held it up in front of his face. 

“Oh,” is all his father says. In his peripheral vision Eddie can see Adriana grinning and Sophia tearing up a little. 

“You’re married?” Helena gawps.  

“Engaged,” Eddie corrects, unable to stop the bright smile taking over his face. “To Buck.” 

“Not this again Edmundo,” Ramon sighs and honestly, fuck him. 

“Yes this again, Dad,” Eddie hisses. “Always this. I’m gay. I know you don’t want to hear it but I don’t fucking care. I’m gay and deeply in love with my best friend. We got engaged a week ago, and if that’s going to be a problem for you then you are more than welcome to not attend the wedding.” 

“Eddie,” Helena sighs and Eddie thinks if one more person sighs, he’ll flip the fucking table. “I think...you’ve had a really rough year, I think maybe you’re just confused.” 

“He’s not confused, Mom,” Adriana snaps. “He’s finally accepted who he is despite your best efforts to shame it out of him.” 

“Adriana this has nothing to do with you,” Ramon grunts. 

“Well that’s just not true,” Sophia snorts. “You think he enjoyed growing up in a household where the only acceptable future was two point five kids and a spouse of the opposite sex? We were in that house too, it was fucking suffocating.” 

“Soph,” Eddie says softly, because as much as he loves having his sisters defend him there’s no reason for them to ruin their relationship with their parents over this. Eddie pretty quickly accepted that coming out to his parents would probably mean the end of their relationship. He also pointedly does not mention to Sophia that she has a husband and two kids (and a cat).

As an Aussie writing "Mom" feels wrong but, you know. It's how they'd pronounce so I'm taking the hit.

Happy birthday to me… I guess. Papi didn’t make it home until evening, so he missed the cake. And he didn’t get me a bat and a glove. I don’t know if he remembered. I reminded him before he left, but I guess it was a dismissive grumble. I should have known. Besides, money doesn’t grow on trees.

I know Adri is turning 16, so she’ll have her license soon and she’ll need a car and Soph has been begging for dance classes. Plus, the sink broke a while ago. Mom called the plumber, because papi wasn’t here, so that cost a lot. Next time, I should see if I can fix it before she does to spare costs. Still, I’m a little sad about not getting the bat and glove. Maybe he meant Christmas, since technically it’s not a year now? I hope so. I’ll just continue to borrow Cody’s glove or one from school for now. The tshirts were nice too, I shouldn’t complain, with the way I’m growing, I needed new shirts. I got three and two are actually okay to be seen with in public.

Also Soph spilled her drink over her slice and cried about it, so mom made me switch with her. That sucked. Juice flavored chocolate cake and soggy whipped cream isn’t as nice. But that is bound to happen, maybe she’s less clumsy when she’s ten. And those dancing classes might help. Maybe mom will let me have an extra cookie to make up for it.

Everyone keeps saying Eddie is the oldest brother (I did too!) but I don't think that's actually the case??

I don't remember the episode but at some point there's a dialog involving Eddie and someone going to university (May most probably), and Eddie says something about how it was such a mess when his sister was choosing to go to university and it caused so much trouble that when it was his turn he decided to join the army bc it was easier..

Also in ep 2x01 he says his niece helped with his pictures for the calendar, and maybe in some families the term is used more largely (to include cousins' children?) (i have no idea I have a very small family) but it could also mean one of his sisters has a 12 yo kid by the time where Chris is like 7 so, that means his sister had a child 5 years before 19yo Eddie did!

Please tell me if I got anything wrong!

Thoughts on Eddie’s sisters? Thoughts on them meeting Buck? 👀

oooohhh so i have different thoughts based on wips i have in progress that they show up in, but i kinda love not knowing hardly anything about them?? 🤭🤭🤭 bc it gives so much room to play around with their characters in fanfic

but

i kinda hope we get to see them in s8? especially with this new family drama that might unfold around chris? like it would be fun to see what dynamics they play with.

my personal headcanon (and i think there is a reddit post somewhere that details evidence of this within canon) is that Eddie is the oldest, with Adriana following close behind— Sophia being a few years younger than both of them.

I think Sophia being the youngest would have a similar relationship with Eddie as Buck does with Maddie and would probably be the fan favorite sister (at least she seems to be in fanon) but I have conflicting feelings on Adriana… sometimes i want her to be Helena reincarnate, but sometimes i want her to be supportive but almost intimidatingly so, if that makes sense? like if you wrong her she could end your bloodline with the snap of a finger?

but on the opposite end i kinda love the angst of having one sibling being super close with their parents and behaving like them towards eddie, while the other is super supportive and sides with him- especially when they can play around with that in the whole chris debacle!

as far as meeting buck, i think sophia would instantly fall in love with him and they would form that brother/sister bond immediately

with adriana, if we go intimidating siste route, buck might struggle to please her at first and she might not warm up to him (not for any homophobic reason, but because she doesn’t want eddie to be hurt again) but they eventually warm up to each other bonding over their love for eddie and christopher and they actually form a deep connection and friendship with each other as in-laws

if we went the bad adri route…. we could get some homophobia action in which adri (with the diaz parents) says or does something about eddie and his sexuality and we see buck blow up on them (a la buckley parent dinner) and tell them off for being awful to eddie

like i said there’s a lot that can be played with w the two of them bc we know so little about them and that’s what makes them so fun to write in fics imo 🥰🥰
