Bowie. He came into our lives after the death of poor Dexter, our beloved cat of 15 years. I guess we couldn’t live without a cat in our lives. Bowie was living on the streets of Hartford CT until a shelter took him in after which, much later, we saved him. Happily, he’s been with us now for about 4 months and he seems very content. As are we.

We adopted our cat when he was four. He is super sweet and loves people. And even though he was 4 when we adopted him, he was still super trainable. Which I think people overlook, and think that only kittens can be trained, when that’s not the case. Plus, normally an older cat will have a lot of its shots already, which means you’re just maintaining, not paying for the spay/neuter and shots a brand new kitten would need.

This was meant to be a quick warm up, but it turned into a comic that I’ve wanted to draw for a while. This is something that is extremely important to me, and I appreciate it if you read it.
A while ago, I heard a story that broke my heart. A family went a cat shelter to adopt. The daughter fell in love with a 3-legged cat. The father straight up said “absolutely not”. Because he was missing a leg. That cat was that close to having a family that loved him, but the missing leg held him back. Why?!
Many people have the initial instinct of “nope” when they see an imperfect animal. I get it, but less-adoptable does NOT mean less loveable. 9 out of 10 people will choose a kitten over an adult cat. And those 10% that would get an adult cat often overlook “different” animals.
All I want people to do is be open to the idea of having a “different” pet in their lives. Choose the pet that you fall in love with, but at least give all of them a fair shot at winning your heart.
Don’t dismiss them, they deserve a loving home just as much as any other cat. They still purr, they still love a warm lap, they still play, they still love you. Trust me, next time you are in the market for a new kitty, just go over to that one cat that’s missing an eye and see what he’s all about!

I Love Pets – Let’s Just Adopt A Dog Or Cat - adopt puppies in mumbai
Questions to ask yourself before you get a pet
Loving someone and committing to someone are two very different things. This is not about the decision to buy a cat or dog or to adopt it. It is about whether one can commit to one.
The internet bombards us with cute videos of cats and dogs. No emotion is better expressed than a pet meme and the most photogenic person in the family pictures invariably seems to be the cat or dog.
We however forget that life is not our vignettes on Instagram. It is what happens in between the pretty shots. The messes, the misunderstandings, the sheer volume of confusion and the cost – time, effort, and money. There are priorities and compulsions. There is a need for space and quiet. The daily grind and grit is life.
Bringing someone in this mix who is completely dependent on you, whose needs can’t be postponed and whose love and exuberance for you can sometimes become a chore is a big decision.
A pet is a baby which never grows up. Ask the parent whose child has fled the coop. Along with the heartbreak comes the relief. Finally, a moment of quiet becomes a possibility. With a pet it’s a perpetual high and then there is a final goodbye. There is no in-between.
The process of getting and looking after a pet is intense. There are myriad questions to answer. What kind of pet, adopt or shop, how many actively involved hours in a day, are there pet services near me, can I spare the time for the dog training, will I make it to all veterinary appointments, do I have the ability of find pet sitters and boarders, who will walk the dog, who will take care of the cat litter, pet grooming services take time. The list goes on and these are just the practical ones.
The emotional questions are tougher still. Do I have it in me to parent a pet, to listen and learn a non-human language, to anticipate an unstated need? Given my family dynamics, will a pet fit in? Forget strangers, neighbours and family might not always welcome my baby. Will I be able to stand firm in its corner? Who will apha dog the cat when everyone wants to just pamper it? Will I bear to be away from my pet, trusting strangers at times when I know I may never fully know what happens when I am away? When I have to put away money for my pets needs today and for tomorrow will I have too many other responsibilities? If something happens to me, who looks after my baby?
Above and beyond, can I have a part of my heart walk outside my body every day and do what’s right by it? Being a pet parent is a commitment like no other. This blog series will take you through what every parent needs to know and argue about pet parenting. Ask yourself these questions and please feel free to comment.

Her name is Thea. It is Greek meaning "gift of the gods." She's a rescue and was 4 years old when I adopted her in 2021.
Before I adopted her she had to be spayed and had obviously had multiple litters.
It took me 18 months to win her trust and now she is a contented snuggle bunny and loving her 4 meals a day. I don't know where she puts it; she weighs about 8-1/2 pounds.
Thea is the 12th cat I have adopted (yes, I'm old) but the first adult cat. It occurred to me that with my experience with cats, I should adopt one that would be a challenge.
I was right! She was!
Right now she's curled up under my chin, purring and soon to be sound asleep.

Hi! Wanted to ask, is there any particular breed of cat in your shelter that tends to be adopted quickly? Are there cats that seem to be more difficult to adopt out?
Yeah, sphynxes tend to be adopted out super quick. I'm surprised we still have Peach and Finn--- I knew we'd have them for a while because we were treating Finn's FIP, but I didn't expect to STILL have them. We usually have a list of people looking for sphynxes, but all of the people on the list are only looking for ONE cat, not two.
So bonded pairs are more difficult to adopt out, unless they are tiny baby kittens.
tbh, a lot of pedigreed cats get adopted out relatively quickly due to the whole 'we have a list of people looking for this exact breed' thing. Like I've already got people asking about Persephone just because they want a bengal and don't mind working with her severe fears. I'm not complaining about that, exactly. Some part of me feels some kind of way about that but I try not to let it bother me too much.
Domestic shorthairs are the hardest to adopt out (medium haired cats are the most popular of the non-pedigreed cats; longhaired cats are slightly less popular but still pretty desirable). People are well aware that they can get a moggie anywhere. I can swear up and down that my moggies are special (because they are), but so is every cat. Can't really argue with that.
Cats that are a bit 'generic' don't get adopted as quickly. Short haired tabbies and solid blacks are the slowest to get adopted. People want something that looks more 'interesting'. I teach my 'less desirable' cats little tricks to make them more adoptable and it tends to work.
Cats with visible, but not super work intensive, disabilities get adopted pretty quickly. Cats with one eye or three legs are fairly popular. People always think 'ohh no one will want this one', but they're wrong. Everyone loves a nice disabled kitty, so a short-haired tabby with three legs or one eye will be adopted pretty quick.
Fully blind or deaf cats are less popular, but there's generally still a list of people looking for that. Blindness is more 'adoptable' than deafness.
Cats with invisible disabilities or medical needs are the slowest of all to be adopted. Like diabetes or something similar. If a cat has an ongoing medical need that could be expensive, that cat is going to be with us for a while.

the way that one line from the new epilogue in an astarion romance is going to HAUNT me
Tumblr media
just. what a profoundly intense thing to confess to someone.
like, just these six months of newfound happiness with you exerts a force on his heart equal and in direct opposition to two centuries of endless torment, the gnawing hunger and exploitation. this flashbulb-bright fraction of his long life holds the same gravity to him as years upon years of darkness and suffering.
in all likelihood, he hasn’t even known his lover for as long as his worst memory lasted, that year sealed away to go mad from starvation and sensory deprivation, yet he still tells them this brief time has been so fundamentally and powerfully important that the weight of even that unimaginable hell is vanishingly small compared to this present he has now and the future ahead of them both.
how am i supposed to act normal about this.

Sluggo from The Little Lion Foundation in Long Beach, California
Click here for more information about adoption and other ways to help!
Click here for a link to The Little Lion Foundation's main website.
Let's say you're this cat - your name's Sluggo- and that the Universe has put your nine lives through some heavy-duty hard luck, followed by a spin cycle of neglect. But you survive it. You carry the scars of your terrible journey. Anyone can see it in the mangled ear, along the outlines of old battle scars around the head and neck, but don't let that fool you because this cat is a LOVER.
Feel him relax when your fingertips begin to scratch the underside of his chin. Listen to the extravagant purring as he eats his dinner. Watch his paws knead the air as he enjoys your touch. Sluggo is a gentle boy that will bring eternal joy and love to your heart and home.
