I brought Gashar home a little over four years ago. At the time he was eight years. He's fiv+ and has FeLuk. I chose him because I was still settling into my new place, was desperate for companionship, and wasn't 100% sure I could manage pet care long term. He'd been at the shelter for eight months. I figured I'd give him a home for the end of his life, and in so doing could learn whether having a cat was something right for me. The shelter waived his adoption fee, because they were so glad someone could give him a home.
Turns out that in a home he is the sweetest creature, loves to cuddle and a motor that goes for hours. He's strong and extremely healthy given his conditions and trauma. I love taking him to the vet because one of the techs knew him when he was miserable at the shelter and never fails to tell me how much better Gashar is doing now. For a cat we didn't expect to survive, he seems to have several more years in him.
Please adopt older and disabled pets. They are amazing companions.

This was meant to be a quick warm up, but it turned into a comic that Iā€™ve wanted to draw for a while. This is something that is extremely important to me, and I appreciate it if you read it.
A while ago, I heard a story that broke my heart. A family went a cat shelter to adopt. The daughter fell in love with a 3-legged cat. The father straight up said ā€œabsolutely notā€. Because he was missing a leg. That cat was that close to having a family that loved him, but the missing leg held him back. Why?!
Many people have the initial instinct of ā€œnopeā€ when they see an imperfect animal. I get it, but less-adoptable does NOT mean less loveable. 9 out of 10 people will choose a kitten over an adult cat. And those 10% that would get an adult cat often overlook ā€œdifferentā€ animals.
All I want people to do is be open to the idea of having a ā€œdifferentā€ pet in their lives. Choose the pet that you fall in love with, but at least give all of them a fair shot at winning your heart.
Donā€™t dismiss them, they deserve a loving home just as much as any other cat. They still purr, they still love a warm lap, they still play, they still love you. Trust me, next time you are in the market for a new kitty, just go over to that one cat thatā€™s missing an eye and see what heā€™s all about!

getting older can be so amazing? you get more familiar with yourself. learn tips & tricks for troubleshooting your own brain. trial & error helps you build routines that minimize discomfort, maximize reward. your preferences/interests don't get set in stone, but you do find out which ones are going to stay with you in the long-term, and which ones are fun but transient joys to appreciate in the moment.
you learn that the world is so much more complex than you were taught, and that that's okay, and that there's an endless supply of things you can learn or watch or experience or think about if you want to. if you're lucky, you loosen up, stop putting so much pressure on yourself. if you're lucky, you learn to recognize that negative inner voice, and whack it with a baseball bat until it hushes up. if you're lucky, you learn to treat yourself gently, not because you are fragile but because you are worthy of gentleness. (i hope you are lucky.)
and some things will change. some things will get better. some things will get good. and maybe you start to recover from the dehumanizing stress of childhood/education. maybe you learn the power of your own autonomy. maybe you learn how to walk away from bad situations (which is a superpower even if you don't realize it yet). and you get to choose your own clothes. and your own food. and which relationships to pursue! and what you do with your free time. and with your life (but don't worry you get to choose that gradually). and that's crazy! and sometimes scary. and extraordinarily, indescribably precious.

why aren't there more mysteries that take place in nursing homes & retirement communities. i want to watch a group of deranged retirees-cum-amateur-detectives combine their powers of:
decades of life experience
boredom-fueled busybody shamelessness
access to the most gossipy next-door-neighbors in existence
"I am too old to be arrested and/or give a shit" attitude
and solve crimes. this should be an enormous subgenre.

Lmao I just had a fantastic vision.
The JL fighting a multiversal threat, and the for keeps disappearing into different universes/worlds. While everyone is coming up with ways to travel to apprehend the foe, Captain Marvel has an idea.
Batman: so far, our current multiversal technology is subpar and unable to go at the rate the villain is going.
Flash: while I can travel through universes, itā€™s going to take a while to lā€™acte which one theyā€™re on, and even then, they can leave before I even do anything.
Superman: we need a reliable tracker and transport system. Both being crucial elements we donā€™t have
Captain Marvel: I have an idea.
Cue to the JL all on a random sidewalk, with the clear instructions to ā€˜wait until they arriveā€™ and to ā€˜not move or interfere in any way shape of formā€™.
Random Truck: *appears out of nowhere, hitting a random pigeon*
JL: huh
Marvel: well thatā€™s going to be an interesting story. Anyways, there you are! Guys, meet Truck-kun!
JL: excuse me???
Truck-kun:
Marvel: Their a bit shy ā˜ŗļø
JL: ā€¦
Truck-kun: *blushes*
JL: how is that even possible??!??!?
They proceed to go in and go through some weird interdimensional car chase, passing by random worlds, spawning through random streets (for some reason, most of them are in Japan), and more importantly, hitting A LOT of people. Old, young, middle aged, animals, even a vending machine at some point. Itā€™s just a slaughter.
The JL is horrified, and Cap is just sitting in his seat, all chill.
Green Lantern: DID WE JUST HIT SOMEONE
Marvel: yup
Superman: AND YOURE DOING NOTHING TO STOP IT
Marvel: nope
Batman: Captain that kills people
Marvel: itā€™s not killing, more like transporting them into a different universe that is more suited for them. Had we not hit them, they would have died either ways within the hour. Now they get a second chance of life.
JL: *existential crisis*
Even after the villain is apprehended, they found out they only managed to get this far is because they had a magic car*
Hawkwoman: *stares at the car* how does one come across thee vehicles
Marvel: well I met Truck-kun cause heā€™s besties with my magic Train. Train-chan told me that Truck-kuns little brother Car-kun got abducted, which is why Truck-kun was so willing to help.
JL:ā€¦
Flash: Iā€™m going to go lie down.
Batman: *mentally adding magic vehicle community to his conspiracy board*
Bonus:
Green Arrow: *retelling what happened* -and then some random Truck pulls up
Conner Hawke: lmao you met Truck-kun
Green Arrow:
Conner:
Black Canary: ā€¦ how do you know that name?
Conner: w h a t
Bonus 2:
Naturally Conner tells Damian, who tells Jon, who tells Kon, who tells the Titans and basically the whole thing spreads.
Red Robin: YOU MET TRUCK KUN! THE GREAT ONE HIMSELF
Spoiler: THE ALL MIGHTY WHEELS OF STEEL
Cyborg: WHY WASNT I INVITED! CAP YOU LBOW HOW MUCH I LIKE MY ISEKAI
Blue Beetle: JUST CAUSE YOU GASLIGHT DOES NOT MEAN YOURE A GIRL BOSS
Superboy: SHARING IS CARING
Arsenal, lying on the road: TAKE ME
Bonus 3:
Static Shock: next youā€™ll be telling us you know Archieā€™s magic bus
Marvel: well Iā€™m not sure I know who this ā€˜Archieā€™ is, but Train-chan does have a cousin called Bus-san.
Titans: *explode*

We adopted our cat when he was four. He is super sweet and loves people. And even though he was 4 when we adopted him, he was still super trainable. Which I think people overlook, and think that only kittens can be trained, when thatā€™s not the case. Plus, normally an older cat will have a lot of its shots already, which means youā€™re just maintaining, not paying for the spay/neuter and shots a brand new kitten would need.
