To Pjo x DC content creators, reminder that:
Percy canonically referenced Superman but never any other DC superhero
Kryptonians are compared to gods in power level in-universe
Metropolis is in the upper parts of New York
Percy canonically also hates rich people and expresses they never want to be rich ever
Jason dosen't have a Super to his Bat nor a proper foil who's another hero
Percy dosen't kill not because of a moral code but because they're scared of their own powers
Kon is a kid who was abused by almost every adult in their life and Percy always takes those in as their younger siblings and pseudo-kids and they share almost the same sense of humor
Please for the love of fuck make Percy a Superfam member instead of Batfam,it dosen't work on every level and that includes that Percy wouldn't like Bruce at all much less view him as their dad and Clark would remind them of Sally so they'd have a Gwen Stacy and Jessica Drew moment of Percy saying 'Will you adopt me?' on the first meeting

Me prepping auDHD rep for Bart in spiderkon re: getting angry when people ignore him/call him dumb bc he Reads Like That To Me but Knowing I need to be careful because it's probably 90% headcanon and it's Kon's fic so I'm not gonna get a lot of space to talk about Bart and it shouldn't all be projection-
Reading Impulse comics and Bart getting snappy when people call him Stupid:

leaving a lil rant here :]
I love Tim and his ships sm. Me personally, I only really ship TimKon. Those two are perfect for eachother and have so much clear queer coding that it’s crazy, and they have dialogue that’s just. gay shaped.
I also get TimBart, I don’t ship it romantically but I get why people do!! Tim and Bart are close as well, and the balance they get between ‘depressed tired wet cat’ and ‘living breathing embodiment of adhd’ is great.
I also get TimBartKon, they’re a trio. They are always a trio, so many people like to bring up how TimKon has so much coding and one of the big examples they use is when Tim tried to clone Kon. You know who else he tried to clone? Bart.
The only Tim ship I don’t get is TimBern, or any ship involving those two. When Bernard first appears, he’s Tim’s bully. He actively makes fun of tim and puts him down and then that character is forgotten about until Tim comes out as bi, then they just rework his character and go “haha guys this is his boyfriend not bully ygs are crazy” and just forget about all the bad stuff Bernard did? Reworking a character is great and all but, it just feels a bit weird and out of place for me. There’s always going to be that certain toxicity for TimBern, at least for me.
homie... bully??? im flabbergasted- im speechless- im jason todd (dead)
okay, im gonna start off by saying you have all the right to not ship them, and im not here to defend timbern as a ship. im here to defend BERNARD DOWD.
first thing bernard does is give tim advice about teachers, and he clearly says they're gonna be good friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if bernard was a bully, tim wouldn't hang around him so much. besides, i hate it when people place tim as a helpless little boy who would get bullied. he has put himself in situations where he looks weak on purpose to keep his identity safe, but he's not a victim at all. tim is a social butterfly because he's really good at masking and reading people.
not to mention, both bernard and darla push tim a lot because they're trying to get him to open up and be closer to them, but he keeps pushing them away. tim is a professional liar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and when tim has to quit robin and start hanging out with normal people, he invites bernard over.
and bernard is acting relatively normal, and he wants to play video games and talk about how hot tim's stepmom is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
bernard is a normal teenager who has no idea one of his friends is the hero he's so obsessed with. he even shows concern for robin dying and makes up an entire conspiracy theory about batman havin a robin orphanage. you can tell he's afraid of robin being gone for real because at this point they haven't seen robin in months bc tim retired.
i dont know what about all of these interactions gave you the vibe that he's a bully because all i see is a normal teenager teasing his friends and being jealous tim gets more bitches.
im not saying that bernard was never mean or weird around tim, but he definitely wasn't actively bullying tim.
bernard is obnoxious and cocky, yes. but thats just because they wrote him as a real person. he's the school's chameleon, maybe even a little bit of a loser, too. he knows everyone but keeps a safe distance so that he doesn't get pushed into a box. im not sure if, at this point, he was already in a cult or being indoctrinated, but when we see his parents and the dowd home in tim drake: robin that just doesn't look right.
also homie talk about "forgetting all the bad things bernard did" (which in my opinion is none but okay lets follow that logic) everyone forget about all the bad things batman did to tim, he was not a kind and loving mentor, he was cruel to both tim and steph. we forget that batman was kind of an asshole to damien in the beginning. all those things are forgotten for the sake of the batfam.
in conclusion: we're just so used to the idea that superheroes can only ever form strong friendship bonds by having near death experiences together that we forget that the secret identifies exist and that the people who know them by their legal name also means a lot to them. after all, these people are the reason why they're heroes.

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like? (for kon)
oops sorry i had a fucking day and wasnt online much yesterday but! better late than never right!
my favorite thing to do when writing kon... HMMM! that's a good question. i think it is either a) his stupid slang and star trek references everywhere, or b) describing how he experiences his superpowers, especially ttk. i think ttk is like an extra sense to him and it's sooo fun to play with. as for his references, well, i'm into star trek and star wars and lord of the rings so it works out great. one of these days i'm gonna have to bite the bullet (get my adhd meds) and actually watch btvs for him, too.
as for least favorite, that's actually so hard. is there anything i DONT like writing about kon?? i don't know that there is. he's a fun character he's a silly little guy and also he contains the horrors, which compel me.
CHARACTER ASK GAME!!! 💫

Concept: Young Justice (core: Cassie, Bart, Kon, Tim) are all ADHD. Turns out that Tim was especially drawn to and comfortable with them because they share this trait with each other but they never knew because Tim unlike the others never got diagnosed
One day someone probably remarks something like "oh, so I guess it's kinda Robin's job to be the neurotypical braincell of the group?" and his friends are all like "uhhhh that doesn't sound right. Whelp. Time for some self-discovery!" and then Tim has another identity crisis.

out of context paragraph from my au, hopefully chapter 2 will be out by the end of the week
He should have known the Ewmans were coming when Lanes asked his dad if her friends could come to the shop and do homework with her. His dad said, yes, of course because Laney is his favorite employee and apparently she gets her work done or something. Which sucks because when Corey asks his dad if Kin and Kon can come hang out with him in the shop, he’s told “No, Corey, finish pricing the rare books section and organizing it by price.” To which Corey would like to say that it’s not his fault that they never get anything cool at the pawn shop, like instruments or boxes of mannequin heads.
Wait, what was he supposed to be doing again? Oh right! Writing lyrics.
This whole chapter I have just been writing Corey’s thought process like my own and have the realization that my adhd brain is very much squirrel like

Hey so I'm interested in writing for bartkon week, but I like doing frankly excessive research on characters before I try writing them...and honestly I don't really want to read all of SB94, impulse and YJ just to get a handle on what I'm doing, that's a lot even for me. I know some general stuff about the both of them, but not to the point where I'm like "Ah yes, I understand the soul of the matter" So I was wondering if there were like any specific arcs or points of characterization that I could read through to get the dynamic right?
shfkjdsfd ngl, I'm the worst person to ask bc my romance with BartKon didn't even start with BartKon....... it started with Clark/Bart from Smallville 😭😭😭 I'm exceptionally weak for Kryptonian/Speedster romances, but whereas Clark/Bart was the gateway, Bart/Kon is where my heart resides. And I don't ship any other Kryptonians with Speedster. Literally just Clart from Smallville and BartKon from the comics. Just giving you context so you don't think I'm some subject matter expert with a phd in BartKononomics ...... I am just a lady in her thirties who has carboard boxes full of sb/imp/yj singles cuz Clart made her Feel Things when she was a kid and she decided to Do Something about it (aka read comics).
BUT TO YOUR QUESTIONS!
If you want a high level overview of the ship, @radioactive-earthshine's KonBart Manifesto is a great place to start. It has the ship's Best Highlights, and really sums up why there is a small but dedicated fanbase to it. Dedicated enough that I broke my near-ten year cold turkey of mainline DC comics because my main man Bendis put BartKon back on the map while I was living my life blissfully unaware that DC had even hired Bendis to begin with and that the Diamond distro monopoly died. I was shocked. Still am. Two things I never thought would happen in my lifetime.
Now to understand the soul of Bart and Kon.... you're gonna have to look at that things that don't really have Bart and Kon on the same page. Part of the reason why BartKon Speaks to Me is because their relationship progression over the year directly ties back to their individual growth as characters.
So reading material 1: In Impulse, Bart starts off as the speedster equivalent of a feral bobcat, but slowly progresses into an empathetic, understanding, and an overall Good Man. Much of his story deals with the harsh realities of simply growing up different. Running theme of Imp fandom is that Mark Waid created and wrote an autist with ADHD without meaning too, and by Allah he sure did. It's fascinating because Bart harbors both grief and rage due to his predicaments, and the adults in his life are incredibly unkind (even if they are well-meaning), so Impulse has always been, in my understanding, the slice-of-life that really helps Bart to come of age into a Man and a Great Hero. You don't have to read the whole series, but if you can read at least the first twenty or so issues, you'll find yourself rooting for the little man and see how he shines in terms of empathy, understanding, love, and dealing with unresolved rage/grief/loss.
Reading material 2: Superboy is a trick and a half because it deals with issues of child neglect, grooming, the allegory of child star exploitation, and so on and so forth. The BartKon implications are There, but the reason why Superboy is incredibly important is because Superboy as a character is more than just his parentage. Contrary to popular belief, Geoff is NOT the main man in this story. Reading even just the first twenty issues of Superboy will show you Kon was failed by most of the adults in his life, and Superman is NOT his villain. Or the root of his daddy issues. Bro didn't even have a name until much later. If you wanna know who Superboy REALLY was before the Geoffian Era, you can read the first twenty odd issues. If you wanna go earlier, you could read his parts in Reign of the Supermen, just to get an understanding as to why he HAD to be the way he was during this time.
Reading material 3: I do not recommend reading all of YJ 98 for the BartKon bc YJ 98 is hijinks fun. It's GREAT reading for absurdist and comical situations, but only really works with context from Impulse and Superboy to get to the BartKon heart of it all. Not to say YJ 98 wouldn't give you the BartKon goodness, it sure does, but the soul doesn't come together if you don't get how Bart evolved in Impulse and how terribly Kon was treated in Superboy. You can read really anything in YJ to have fun with the group, but if you wanna fast track, you can read the last twenty or so issues and Titans/Young Justice Graduation Day.
Reading material 4: The Geoffian era..... I wouldn't wish Teen Titans 2003 on my worse enemy. Funniest thing is that at the time, I was just starting to watch Smallville. In love with Smallville!Bart already, I embarked on my Superboy journey.... had mixed feelings, so I stuck mostly to the 90's content. Ended up reading impulse a decade later, but long story short.... the Geoffian Era set a Tone and Direction for Bart and Kon that never sit well with me. There IS story there, if you are interested in reading about Daddy Issues, Masculine Identity, and a shit ton of other stuff that really pulled Kon away from his roots and made him more of a Emotionally Tortured Super. If that floats your boat, you may enjoy it. You can read a handful of comics from this era. Just know that in the end, he suffers anyway, just in an ugly ass outfit. The only real bit I'd recommend forreal forreal is when he dies. His whole arc in the Geoffian Era really just tells us he doesn't know how to live and thus he... dies. It's sad bc the writers before him despite having tortured Kon relentlessly, never really made him so...... hopeless.
Reading material 5: Flashpoint.... Bart dies, but I personally did not feel much for him because Bart didn't feel like Bart in the end, but yeah, he kicks it. This is where I pretty much kicked DC to the side too, minus the mistake that was reading RHATO. You can read Kid Flash Lost if you'd like.
Do not read New 52.
Reading material 6:.... my main man Bendis. No you do not have to read all of YJ 2019, but BartKon reunion and then Bart's explication as to WHY he found Kon is all you need. Bendis, despite the hate he gets, actually shows that he has great love for the YJ line. BartKon especially. The bald headed demon proves yet again that he care not for the world, only for his faves, which I'm cool with bc BartKon are me faves.
I know. A lotta reading. Those numbers I gave you.... you can also just read half of what I said kjdhgkhd Googling also helps! I know it's not always feasible to read so many comics, and I'mma be real, the Tone for many may not entice you either. Impulse feels like a slice-of-life to me, but YJ's an absurd shounen, and Superboy is the saddest book you'll ever read that is absolutely hilarious when you can accept that 90's writers just Did Not Care. Geoff hates Bart and Kon. New 52 is not real. Bendis actually loves BartKon a LOT, so you can just read their tidbits and find peace in the fact that Bart Allen, the loneliest fucker in existence, found his Kon El, who is the saddest fucker in existence. Something something, I will find you even if God wants us both dead. And God (editorial) did. I don't know how Bendis pulled the shit that he did, but he put a decades old rarepair back on the map after the Geoffian Reign. And Geoff hates Bart and Kon.
Happy Reading/Googling/Researching!!!!

but no yeah can we talk about neurodivergent cassie? i have talked about yj98 being so nd coded before (looks at kon, looks at tim, looks at bart) but we havent NEARLY talked about nd cassie enough!
she is an infodumper! its literally canon! she became a hero through the sheer power of will and autistic hyperfixation (something she and tim has in common oop-)!
cassie who hates certain textures. cassie with voice stims. cassie who sits weirdly in chairs because 'it feels better'. cassie who chews on her hair when it gets longer.
I NEED MORE OF NEURODIVERGENT CASSIE PLEASE!!!
NEURODIVERGENT CASSIE IS SO REAL TO ME like maybe it's just the pjo mindset of all demigods being ND but c'mon she special interest-ed her way into being Wonder Girl.
And let Cassie be the one that when she off-handedly mentions she's ND, she always gets the response "I didn't know you were autistic/adhd/ND!" or "you don't act autistic/adhd/nd" and she's always like :/ well I am. So. Not YJ though they could tell from the start. Just automatically.
She definitely sits on chairs weird because it feels right! And I need Cassie that was diagnosed super early so she knows she's ND and has always known she's ND and is utterly comfortable with it, as much as she's solid in the very basics of who she is.
She flaps her hands when she's happy and fiddles with stuff to pay attention and repeats phrases she likes and singlehandedly gets Donna to change the fabric of her costume because she can't touch it without physically recoiling and infodumps about Wonder Woman and listens to her friends' infodumps in turn.
Cassie who's wholefully confident in her abilities but also her drawbacks and accepts there's some things she could do, but would be really fucking difficult when someone else can do it for basically no strain because their brains are different (<- queen of delegating responsibilities) Cassie who gets frustrated despite, because the world isn't made for people like her, Cassie who gets overwhelmed and upset and lashes out but always apologizes afterward.
Cassie who's hyper-empathetic and quick to emotion, whether it be anger, tears or happiness, and her powers falter with those emotions she has to get under control. Cassie who's strong in all her beliefs but is malleable depending on the situation and the person trying to change her, but otherwise is impossible to budge.
And she's a weird kid! Unapologetically weird and odd and freaky with her closet full of clothes that make her happy and she thinks look cool and her Wonder Woman posters and her inability to not go along with Hermes' latest scheme or Apollo when he cries about their father.
Sorry for this ramble it's just!! Her!!!

Do by any chance have a reading list for Bart? Or like-I really wanna get into the Impulse run and young justice but I’m not entirely sure how to start or what the overlap is with those so if you have any pointers that’d be great.
Jesus fucking christ.
I'm so sorry. This isn't you, dear anon, it's me. I'm fighting for my life in finals rn and I'm so sleep deprived that I read this as "Do you have any reading lists for Bart? I really don't wanna get into the Impulse run and young justice"
I was gearing up for a "LMAO THAT'S A SHORT FUCKING READING LIST THEN ANON" type reply but thank god I reread it.
To actually answer your question? I honestly have no clue. I guess you could read both series at the same time, going by release date but that sounds like work.
I'm an odd duck but the way I normally do things is I binge read a series in it's entirety, say 'huh wild' when a crossover/event happens, then I would binge read the other series in it's entirety, and go 'oh that makes more sense' at the crossovers/events. Finally, if the event or crossover really interested me, I would go back and read the entire event/crossover in its entirety with all its tie-ins.
I also have ADHD and I'm chaotic as fuck. So my way of doing things might not be right for you.
I will say, off the top of my head, the Impulse series only really has major events with the Flash and Young Justice. I would highly recommend that when you get to a Flash crossover/event in Impulse that you stop and read it in its entirety before continuing with the series. (Just the event tho, you don't have to stop and read 200+ issues of the Flash run or anything)
I would maybe start with Young Justice as I believe that (aside from the baseball issue) YJ doesn't spoil anything from Impulse. Impulse, however, spoils a few YJ things.
With YJ I would recommend reading any tie-ins/crossovers with Tim's Robin series or Kon's SB series. Likewise, you'll want to read the YJ specific events like Sins of the Youth (don't forget the secret files!!)
I hope this helped at least slightly? I feel bad that I don't have a chronological list or anything but that's just not how I rock and roll with comics tbh. I jump into things with zero context and figure it out as I go (cough cough me when I only read the speedster related issues in an event and have to figure out wtf is going on)

MOVING THIS TO RBS bc i have my laptop and can actually give a longer response now. >:]. And man where do I start. Mmmmmm.
When Danny finds out he's a clone is v v important to me because in clone^2 he acquires Lil Damian after finding out he's Bruce Wayne's clone (rather than Batman's) and it offers a lot of weight and introspection to their relationship, but I also want to follow your post's canon. MMMM. I'm putting a pin in it for now bc im running circles around in my own head, and deciding for now that Danny knew he was a clone before he and Kon started dating, and waited to tell him because being a clone is very personal to him, and it's not something he tells just anyone. Only his close circle of friends and family know he's a clone, so him telling Kon was a huge show of trust and vulnerability.
Also, for no other reason than I think it's hysterical, but when Kon tells Tim about his boyfriend being Batman's clone, he has no idea about Damian. He knows Danny has a little brother he adores, but they've never met and Damian isn't really that rare of a name.
That's because Danny's pretty secure (most of the time) in the knowledge that nobody will piece together that he's a clone regardless of if he knows he's Bruce's/Batman's clone, since A (if he knows he's Bruce's clone): the current general public know Bruce Wayne as a he is currently; a well-dressed man in his late thirties-early forties with a Captain America build (among other things), and Danny is a 17-18-ish year old boy with a sleeper build and long hair and a preferred fashion of "baggy alternative that forces people of all kind to question their sexuality"
(Genderfluid danny for the WIN)
and B (if he knows he's Batman's clone): nobody knows what tf Batman looks like.
Baby Dames is a whole other story, since Damian Wayne is in the public eye quite often, Danny thinks Dames is at a bigger risk of getting recognized despite being significantly younger than his template. Which means he's a bit more protective/wary about introducing him to people, although they've been lucky so far.
Danny introduces Kon to Damian about a week or so after telling him about being a clone, Kon's positive reaction to the reveal gave Danny the confidence and security to introduce him to Damian. He doesn't outright state Damian is also a clone, but Kon connects the dots instantly upon meeting him, but is smart enough to keep mum about it.
ALSO, to switch gears again, I love the implication here (to me at least) that Tim knows about Danny, but hasn't quite met him yet. I think he'd clock Danny being a clone pretty quickly (not instantly, but quickly) due to the sheer amount of research/stalking he went into with Bruce. Iirc he even knew what kind of paintings he liked, so I think he'd definitely (even if its eventually) recognize a younger Bruce Wayne in Danny.
Like, oh, yeah, his best friend is dating some guy from the Midwest and Kon's probably told him everything under the sun about Danny -- like how he does this cute little grunt when you catch his attention, and that he has a habit of chewing on the end of his pen or thumb nail when he's lost in thought, and he scrunches up his brows sometimes when he's confused, and he has a smile that could light up a whole room, and eyes as bright as glaciers, and -- and it's to the point that Tim probably knows everything about the guy and they've never even met.
He doesn't even bother looking him up, because damn, he already knows what Danny looks like just from Kon's description alone. The one time he decides not to be an obsessive little freak and it comes around to bite him in the ass, because Danny is apparently a clone of Bruce. He finally goes and looks him up and goddamn, the similarities are right there. He even has Bruce's goofy-ass bat-wing shaped eyebrows.
How did this go under the radar for so long.
AND -- because the ADHD is hitting and i'm hopping topics like a mallet in whack-a-mole -- the meetcute. Obsessed with thinking about how Kon and Danny met, and imo the only appropriate (/j) way is that it was as mutually civilians. Except I wanna explore the concept, so instead of it being a coffeeshop meetcute, it's something else.
Danny is in Metropolis with his family for something and was exploring the city during the rare few moments he's alone, and it's very important to me and only me to mention that he's been having a rough go of it lately. Just the new-usual and monthly identity crisis, so he's gone and stuck more holes in his ears. With the added bonus of a brand spanking new eyebrow piercing and lip piercing. If he doesn't like it, he can just take them out and let them heal.
Anyways, he's standing at a stoplight and waiting for the crosswalk to go, Kon was standing next to him and they were relatively ignoring each other. They're standing at a corner with relatively low traffic, and the crosswalk lights up. What happens is that Kon is walking somewhat in front of Danny, when a car comes veering around the corner. It's going fast enough that it would've most certainly hit Kon, if he weren't half-kryptonian.
And also if it weren't for the fact that Danny is faster. Before Kon can dive out of the way of the oncoming speeder, an arm snakes around his waist and he's yanked back and onto the ground. Seconds later, the car whizzes past, a hairsbreadth away from Kon's feet.
"Shit." He says without thinking, slack-jawed and shocked for multiple reasons, and he continues to not think as he tacks on; "Good reflexes."
He turns to look at his supposed savior, and sees a boy with long, dark lashes and even longer hair, pretty blue eyes, and propping himself up on his elbow. The boy gives him a sarcastic smile, "Thanks," he says, "made them myself. You alright?"
"Just peachy." Kon manages to get out, and watches the boy unwrap his arm from around his waist and get up, and then thinks to get up himself.
"You'd think that guy was being chased by the Bat himself." The boy quips dryly, brushing himself off. "He's in the wrong city for that, Gotham is the next storm cloud over."
Kon snorts, and somehow manages to get the pretty boy's name and number, offering to show him the best places in Metropolis as repayment for "saving" him. The rest is history. They start out friends, and only start dating half a year later. Kon was visiting Metropolis to visit Clark and Lois, and heads back to Smallville after he's done -- which is fortunate. Because it's about five hours closer to Illinois than Metropolis, which makes popping by Amity Park to see Danny occasionally just a liitttle bit easier.
Over 900 prompt
Okay I love the Danny is a clone of Batman aus but I've never seen this done.
Danny and Kon dating and Then Danny learning his parents cloned Batman thinking he is a ghost only to find out he isn't and kept Danny as their kid.
Just think of the hilarious reactions
Caue this immediately popped into my head.
Kon: *muffled screaming into Tim's couch*
Tim: ....you good?
Kon: danny is the clone of Batman
Tim: ...
Kon: I'm the clone of Superman
Tim:...
Kon: AND WE ARE DATING!
#clone danny#danny is a clone#picture i have of danny in my head is very chill skater boy essentially. slouched in his arm chair in clothes he picked off from the ground#bc he hasnt had time to do laundry lately from all the ghosts. and he still looks incredible bc ofc he does. his hair is two days unwashed#and fluffy from being recently pulled back. he has bags the size of the marianna trench under his eyes and a lazy drawl. he's on video call#with kon and it's like 11 pm CST. This post is almost perfect. You've described their situations, and how they differ from their predecessors' exactly right. I'm not sure I fully agree with your conclusion, but that might just be the story connecting to different needs in us.
I want their coming of age stories to be about finally getting enough space and support to be INCAPABLE for a bit. Maybe moving in together and being disasters. Maybe staying home with their finally-stable families. But they need a break.
Tim shows major signs of burn out throughout Red Robin. Kon is dealing with major identity issues. Cassie has a huge amount of unresolved grief and trauma. (Tim's is at least ACKNOWLEDGED. Do you know how many teens Cassie lead to their death? Because I DON'T! I had to quit reading it was so many!) Bart is still playing catch up with his whole life - his emotional and social skills were delayed due to ADHD, sped up aging, and neglect (necessary neglect, but he was still unparented in an AI simulation for his whole childhood).
They are capable, and it hasn't been acknowledged enough. But also, they gave up a LOT to be that capable. They need a chance to get some of it back.
I want a story where Alfred's ghost, Red Tornado, Dubbilex, Agent Maad, and Max Mercury semi-force original Young Justice (and Rose. Maybe M'gann if she wants) back together. (All the ladies DO need breaks from their parents. Except Anita. Agent Maad isn't getting off that easily!) We get dorm comedy, and low stakes missions. The adulty adults are forced to work together to support their young adult charges, and all together manage to make 1 (One) functional support figure!
(Maybe Alfred can't actually manipulate the real world, and the speedforce keeps dragging Max away. So they have to delegate. Red Tornado and Dubbilex have learned from previous experience, but are still aware they don't fully understand human needs. And Agent Maad remains the ultimate fun uncle forced out of his comfort zone. He's just here for the preschoolers! Don't get him involved! (He is involved.))
They had to set up in Gotham, because Tim wouldn't leave. Bruce tried to intimidate them ONCE, and then ran away when he saw ghost!Alfred. Bart, Cassie, Cissie, and M'gann are actually going to university. I'd like Tim to be doing Wayne Ent. stuff, but anything is good as long as it's NOT school. Anita has a mentorship with a magical practitioner. Rose and Kon are trying to figure themselves out.
Actually, ALL of them are trying to figure themselves out. But they're doing it together. That reduces the pressure.
-
I agree that having them move away from home doesn't showcase anything new. But, I have severe doubts about several of their home environments!
Bart and Kon could do well at home. (As well as Anita.) But ... it takes a lot of fanon to imagine the Bats helping Tim slow down and let go of the weight of the world. And Cassie and her mom have a LOT of friction, and could use a bit of distance while Cassie finds herself. (And the other three should not be near their families, at all.)
This way, they don't have to be independent. They have been independent enough.
They get to learn cooking from Alfred, who is desperately trying to simplify meals to their skill level. He is bad at it! Roues are hard!
They get taught how to slow down by Max. He is VERY good at it. None of them like this! (But it is good for them.)
Agent Maad absentmindedly gave Traya cornrows this morning. Now, M'gann is trying out a new form, and has asked for some as well. No one has mentioned that she could just shift her hair. It's been a very long time since she's been touched for this long. (Agent Maad couldn't even grumble about it, because she looked so unsure about asking! He is going to complain SO MUCH once she's out of hearing!)
In terms of trying to transplant how Dick’s generation grew up to independent adult heroes onto Tim’s generation, one of the significant issues is that the two groups have very different backstories.
The Fab Five and their generation were largely cared for children with present guardians during their teen years. Their ‘growing up’ rebellion moments were about wanting to establish their own identities separate to their parent/guardian. Then once NTT occurred and new young adult characters were added to it, you had a bunch who were escaping overbearing guardians with expectations the young adult didn’t want to fulfil, and leaving trauma behind.
The Core Four and other 90s heroes, in contrast, were mostly latchkey kids. They had loving but absent parents and parental figures. They were largely expected to grow up and show they were independent in their early teens. The arcs of their stories were not about growing up and finding themselves and ‘be your own person’, but about learning to trust others and interdependency and working together.
Like the shape of a Fab Five story is ‘in my preteens or earlier a Disaster Happened and I was taken in by a hero who cared for me and taught me the business as their sidekick. Then around 18-20 I moved out to live in a sharehouse with my friends as I wanted to find who I was outside of the shadow of being a sidekick’.
While…Tim’s generation largely aren’t sidekicks in the same sense. The shape of THEIR stories are of ‘teenager with largely absent adults is expected to grow up and show emotional maturity too early’. It’s actually notable that Tim, Kon and Bart all have long term story arcs that involve gaining a stable household right near the end.
Kon’s entire solo is the story of how he is neglected and exploited by every adult around him. He doesn’t have parents. He’s Peter Pan, the little boy who cannot grow up, who lives without parental expectation. He’s a celebrity kid exploited by Rex Leech and by CADMUS, who’s expected by those around him to act in an adult manner and held to that standard while simultaneously specifically being underage and not having the right to make his own decisions. His final arc in Superboy is about being so abandoned he doesn’t even have CADMUS to depend on anymore so he has to find an apartment and a job (the building superintendent) and is expected to act and function like an adult in that position. Superboy #59 (FIFTY NINE) is when Kon finally gets his own name. Superboy #100 is ABOUT Kon moving in with Jonathan and Martha Kent and finally having a stable home environment where he can be a child. Heck Kon’s already had a story where he’s ‘married’ and responsible for a kid. He’s had solo space adventures.
Bart’s solo is about Bart and Max learning to be a family together, but also: Bart’s childhood didn’t contain parents. Meloni turns up occasionally through his solo and loves him but also has to disappear away back to the 30th century at the end of each appearance. The final arc of Bart’s solo is about him moving in with Jay and Joan Garrick for more stability, because Max has disappeared (and stays disappeared). And then, post his solo, Bart even already has HAD an arc where he had to grow up and assume the Flash mantle (which went horribly wrong and led to his death).
Tim? Tim’s entire solo is about upheaval and change. The first time he’s expected to behave as an independent hero, not a sidekick, is literally Robin #1 when Azbats kicks him out of the Cave. Jack threatens to send him away to boarding school on multiple occasions and DOES for the Brentwood arc. He loses Jack, he loses Dana, he moves out to be a hero caring for his own city at 16, in Bludhaven post War Games. Bruce’s adoption of Tim was all about giving him back that sense of stability and support so that Tim had people backing him up again in his personal life and not only as a hero. And then he does the ‘leave and get a new identity’ thing during Red Robin.
And Cassie? Cassie starts with a loving mother and her story arc over becoming a hero is about periods of operating on her own. She moves away from her mum to go to Elias School. Due to operating as a hero under her own name she eventually has to come up with the alias of Drusilla Priam to give herself a non-public identity to retreat to (and isn’t living with Helena Sandsmark but renting on her own during this period to protect Helena).
This is a set of characters for whom it makes no narrative sense to tell a story of them growing up by ‘moving out and finding their own identity as separate heroes’ because their entire PAST is about being alone and looking for connections and people to rely upon. They haven’t been looking for their mentors to accept them as independent adults, they’ve been looking to their mentors to be present and work with them.
They have already all BEEN through the steps of moving out (while underage) and learning to look after themselves as nobody else was there to support them. Growing up for them is about learning to trust and be respected for the skills they already have and trusted to know what they’re doing, rather than leaving to show they can operate independently.
And that’s a harder narrative to show, because it’s a less common growth story in our culture. But in the Core Four’s case, I’d argue a lot of the traditional signifiers of adulthood (moving out; moving away for education; taking responsibility for a city on their own; travelling for quests) are things they were already expected to do while still significantly underage, and so sending them through that plot again isn’t showing anything new to allow them growth. What they need is the adults around them to treat them as adults for the things they already can and do do.
