Bart leans into Cassie's shoulder, and she clutches at her chest. "Rest in Pieces, Mr. Smith!" they say in unison, and he watches their easy familiarity, the well-practiced way their bodies curve against each other, and wonders if this is what the TV means when it talks about friends. The pod gave him the word, the definition as it's written for books and dictionaries, but there's something about seeing it play out in front of him that feels…different. They know each other. They trust each other. Cassie's name on Bart's lips is as easy for him to say as it is for her, and the twist of their tone as they call for each other belays more information than he can read. “So, Thirteen-” “Huh?” he says, and then realises. “Oh. No, don’t call me that. That’s not my name.” Bart blinks at him. “Well then what is?” “Uh-” “Don’t go claiming stranger danger,” Cassie jokes, “I just kicked someone in the balls for you.”

Or: the creation of Spiderboy; or, what's in a name? Kon's not entirely sure how he got his; or, Bart and Cassie blackmail Lex Luthor into allowing his genetic experiment/son to have a life of his own and/or an internship as a normal boy; or, aka "The Incident".

It's a lot of things to a lot of people, but Kon mostly just thinks of it as the first day he met his friends.

"Kon!" Cassie cheers, "Oh dude, you're finally here! I thought Lex was never gonna let you out."

"I thought you said your name was Conner." Tim says, and Kon has a moment to wonder why Tim feels stiff in his Web before he has an armful of Cassie and is trying to keep his balance.

"It is," he says distractedly, "Kon is for friends."

Or rather, he's not supposed to use it, according to Lex's rules, but Cassie and Bart have decided to ignore most of what Lex had made conditional to their internship.

"Right," Tim says, but then Bart has decided to join Cassie and Kon's trying to figure out if their combined weight should be a problem.

"Should I be falling?" he whispers to them, their laughter filling his ears and his chest, and doesn't notice that Tim's left.

There's such a freaking line between what I want to do in spiderkon and what my writing energy(???) is sitting at right now.

Because I like the aspect of Kon wanting to be a hero for attention, for fame, (because he's never had it, loud is the only way he's figured out how to act), and I want to build that into him understanding/wanting just to be a hero because it's important to him, because he's grateful to the city and the people who saved him and he wants to give back, and also, he is so used to giving, wanting to give, and his powers are the only way he thinks he can really do that, he's never been normal, and then ALSO the line of: Cassie and Bart didn't technically mean to force him into heroism but they saw his powers and the fact Kon saved them, (not remembering/realising that they saved him, too) and just thought: yeah, that's a hero. We should get him a costume and a secret identity and they don't realise Kon doesn't know what's normal, that he doesn't realise he's allowed to choose, to want things for himself, and ALL THOSE COMPLICATED THINGS. Wanting the good but not the bad, the attention but not the pain, fighting his friends because he does like being a hero, being loved, but they want him to do it selflessly, because that's what they think a hero should be like, that's what they think they'd do, and YEAH he gets there but it's- what do I do! To get him there! To explain and conceptualise it! How do I convey the balance of fame vs. heroism vs. The inherent naivety of NOT BEING ALLOWED TO GROW UP.....

Plus I think the aspect of fame without an identity is sssssuch an interesting part of Kon's comics....and I can't entirely do it here but I still wanna try and capture it!

So anyway. Have to figure out how Leech works into this. Rough :/

): sad realisations had while writing spiderkon: he is very used to being treated like a doll (someone taking his arm and moving it, anyone pushing him to make him go where they want etc.) and with how I am writing Bart, this will be a delightful future trigger.
