This has been sitting on my mind a lot lately but it seems extra relevant now with the way Tommy and by extension Lou has been criticized for acting “too gay” in ep 5. And while yes, I will agree Tommy acted slightly different in ep 5, it has absolutely everything to do with Lou’s incredible acting choices to play Tommy differently when he is around people he deems as “safe” which is much better explained in this amazing post here <-

All these complains are doing is just yet again exposing buddies as homophobes who are, at the end of the day. Uncomfortable with real queerness being shown infront of them. Of course we already knew this with how they react to Buck and Tommy kissing and god forbid flirting especially if it has sexual implications like the daddy kink scene.

They can’t possibly fathom their precious uwu baby Buck would be sexual with another man so they spin and twist it however they can to make it out to be, “NO! You see! Tommy started the flirting! Tommy is just an insatiable horny gay man! He only wants sex! Like most of them do!”

Which is again spewing homophobic rhetoric, who wouldve guessed thats what they immediately turn to?

I now have something probably controversial to say but oh well, im going to say it anyway.

A good many of these shippers would be deeply uncomfortable with Buddie actually becoming canon, because they would be nothing like their fanfic. They don’t want to see two men in a relationship, they want to see Eddie in a relationship with the character they project themselves onto.

There are so many examples of this but perhaps the biggest being the way Buck is made out to be the “woman” in the relationship and especially how he is made to be the “mom”

Buck and Tommy’s relationship 1st does not have any children involved so there are no gendered roles to be assigned (even though if there was.. theyd just both be a dad), they are both beefy and the same height, which is what people usually use to decide “top” and “bottom” but again since there is little physical difference between them, they cannot do this, which only adds to their uncomfortableness.

Furthermore, I would go as far to say that Buddie shippers dont actually like Buck.

A while back a shipper posted this analysis of Buddie, that essentially reduces Buck to a dog. A pet. Only to be let out of the bedroom to cook and take care of Chris, otherwise he’s meant only for Eddie’s pleasure.

Which, disgusting. But the thing that stood out most to me was how Tommy was criticized for

letting Buck be himself. For accepting and loving him flaws and all. For not trying to change anything, or “train” the bad out of him

While Eddie was the “trainer” in that scenario, that had to train the bad out of Buck in order for him to be acceptable.

And thats the funny thing isnt it? Buddie shippers have to completely warp and destroy Buck’s character to make him fit their mold of perfect partner for Eddie. They make him out to be this helpless person who can’t even tell Tommy he doesnt want to be called Evan, that needs rescuing from Tommy, that is a “mother figure” to Chris, that his “dream role” would be live in chef and maid for the diaz family..

When none of that is Buck.

Buck is a smart, independent and strong man. He has worked tirelessly on himself to know who he is and what he wants, which right now? Is with Tommy.

Bringing it back to my main point, their complaints of Tommy being more gay and Bucktommy intimacy ultimately just boil down to homophobia plain and simple, seeing real queer representation and not representation that they can specifically twist and cater to themselves through fic, headcanons or gifs, makes them uncomfortable

(could this be why so many of them ignore shows with canon m/m ships for favor of shows with fanon ones that will never actually happen? So they can make these demands for representation then shit on it as soon as they get it because its not fanfic? Its not their fetish specifically catered to them? It actually represents real life queer men who they don’t actually like?)

Look I do fully believe that the worst people among us can, with personal effort, attain goodness and greatness (becoming a transgender woman).

In all honesty I think taking transfem Eridan seriously is, I don't know, sort of important? In the face of March Eridan.

Lots of good ink has been spilled about the transfeminine femboy dichotomy and I don't think I have the ability to replicate the nuances of such things. But like, historically, there has been a category of person, assigned male at birth but feminine presenting to some degree or another, who exists not really as their own person, but instead as an idealized joke/sex object in the minds of men and other people who sexually exploit them. This figure, in the cisheteropatriarchal is a completely apolitical one. You can have sex with them and it doesn't count as gay. They don't have political demands, like "asking to be called women." They are a titillating deviation with no ability to harm the status quo. In today's terms, they are commonly given the dubious title of "femboy" or "trap", but if we look elsewhere, (I will be apologetically butchering the writings of transfeminist Thalia Bhatt) we can see this pattern of third-gendering in places across the world, with women like the feminiello in Naples, hijra in Inda, as well as others. A type of person assigned male at birth, presenting female, who has a particular gendered role in a binary-gendered society, that of being a usually disposable sexual object, occasionally given some light ceremonial or religious airbrushing to disguise the fact that such people are not a part of "normal", life. They are without an internal perspective, denied opportunities to live a life outside of a typically male sexual perspective.

But trans women? If someone is a trans woman, they usually have political demands, a desire for bodily autonomy, and the desire to actually be treated and referred to as women. And when a "femboy" turns out to have been a trans woman all along, well. Just look at how much everyone was talking about the streamer F1nnster when she was just doing a funny crossdressing bit for a person who paid her to do it, how many posts about "cis+ genderfuck crazy gender" versus when she actually came out as trans. This phenomenon works backwards too, with plenty of transfem sex workers having to tag their sex work as femboy to gain traction. There's a clear distinction here if you care to look.

I think Eridan dying in the story where she did was a good thing for the story (same with the rest of the Murderstuck deaths.) In a world with 5000 "fantasy racist learns to become lest racist" plots, having the fascist no one takes seriously Actually Follow Through and do the horrible things his ideology clearly incentivizes him to do is refreshing (also Hussie correctly predicting that the Harry Potter themed character would, in fact, be a fascist). But if one is to continue on, and have Eridan choose to deradicalize herself, then I think making her become a woman as she gets older is one of the only ways forward.

So. That's a lot of fucking words of transfeminism, and why the fuck am I applying to to Eridan Ampora, known dead fascist 13-year old fish from a webcomic? I'll admit it's a tad frivolous, but March Eridan, the fandom concept, flourished in that fun period of the 2010s where everyone was asking if traps were gay (got to hear that said by one of my high school friends, and I was out as a woman at the time.) Not to say it ever really went away, but, like, the whole joke (not putting this on Paige Turner, the original creator of March Eridan, this is just how the fandom ran with it) was just "hey look at this boy in a skimpy miniskirt and tube top and pigtails! Isn't this funny/a good excuse to draw a child barely in his teens in a sexy way?" Not like the fandom really needed an excuse, but I think, to a point, transfem Eridan is kind of the only way to go from there. Turn him into an actual woman. Put aside all the jokes, and make her transfemininity something you have to take seriously, something she has thoughts and feelings about!

no worries anon :} i literally just use materials / material slots. i avoid texturing because 1. that's closer to phighting's style (there's very very few things that are actually textured in phighting) and also because 2. i can't texture for the life of me. thankfully for both of us, materials are actually super simple to use!

first, make sure to be on material preview mode in the viewport shading, you do this by selecting it in the top right

so, let's say we want to color subspace's horns here (i removed their color for the sake of this post. don't worry, they'll get it back)

what you want to do is select an object (in this case, his horns here) and go to its material properties

and here you can add a new material

now all these things will show up. (if they don't, you'll have to click the 'use nodes' button under the surface tab.) though you probably won't be needing nodes unless you want something more specific. in this case though, we want to pay attention to where it says 'base color'

if you click on the white box next to base color, this little colorwheel should show up. you can choose any color here, or input a hex code in the hex tab if you want a specific color

once you choose a color here, it should show up on the current object you have selected

now i just do the same for his bottom horns. any material that you've created before will save, so here i just selected the exact same material as the horns on the top of his head

and there you go :} one thing to mention. because both of these objects are under the same material, if you change the color then it should change for both of them at the same time!

here you can see i only have the bottom horns selected, but because they're under the same material as the top horns, it's changed colors too

there's also a way for an object to have more than one material. to do this you have to select an object and go into edit mode

let's say that, for example, we want only the tips at the top to be a different color. so we do this by selecting the faces at the top

and we click on 'add new material slot', then 'new'

because we already have the faces we want a different color selected, we just click 'assign'

now you can just change the base color as we did before, and only the assigned faces will change color while the rest stays the same

^ he dyed his horns. so stylish

and there you go :} sorry for the long tutorial, but i hope this helps! there's a lot more you can do with materials and it can go a lot more in-depth, but generally for this sort of style the very basic features will suffice (at least for me. i don't like to do texturing. it hurts me)

14 January 2025 - [ sort of a vent ]

just realized that in my first post of the year I accidentally wrote 2024 instead of 2025. it's only gotten worse from there. accidentally wrote 2023 on a paper today. sent thoughts and prayers. or just take me out back. that works, too.

I had to wake up super early this morning for piano lessons. It's not been fun, but I do like piano! I've been learning a couple new songs and I'm excited to get a little better at them. I'm happy that I'm doing better at piano, but it's so hard to get motivated to practice these past couple days.

My grades are really really bad right now. I think it's about midterms for us and so I don't have a lot of time to fix them, but .. oof. I'm trying my best. I still have a really long ways to go. I think my motivation's just been suffering for a while, and I just haven't been able to get it back up to speed. It's like art block, but for life .. ugh.

The main things I need to fix are APWH and AP Psych. APWH isn't too bad, it's really just this main essay that I didn't do and a few side things that I definitely need to finish. For AP Psych, I only did the first assignment 😅 I've been much too bored in that class to actually do anything of note. Next, I've got to fix my AP Bio grade. I hate that class. I don't get it. I keep procrastinating my lab reports. I should do those. But also, consider : nap. ?.

My boy(ish)friend(ish) is helping me a lot with motivation. I want to be better for myself, but sometimes you feel selfish doing that, so I'm glad he's around so I can be better for him. I love him.

Decided to re-read Kafka's Metamorphosis since I think I have the mental capacity for it to actual leave a mark on my brain tissue. I got less than three pages in when the whole metaphor started making actual sense. I don't know why I didn't get that on the first try. I need to go back in time and tell younger me to slow down. Then she wouldn't have ended us up here. Also (!!) Gregor Samsa is so pookie.

Still making my way through that Poe book. Honestly I shouldn't still be reading it, I'm just taking it at a slow pace because I like it better that way (it's the only thing I can study for personal enjoyment with no specific deadline) . I recently read MS in a Bottle, which was good, but it didn't have enough build-up for the ending to pay off amazingly like it should have. Same deal with the Man that was Used Up. Really good idea and ending, but for spending every page except the last talking about how totally-not-gay (it's the 1800s) you are for this one guy is not synonymous to good build-up.

Anyways. I should probably stop procrastinating my homework by working on a Tumblr post where I complain about my homework. Woe is me. Toodles :)

My Review:

This was adorable and hilarious! I really enjoyed Page Powars' previous book, and when I saw the cover and title and blurb for this one I was hooked. Then I started reading and it was even better than I expected.

When the blurb calls it "unputdownable," they really mean it! I actually started this audiobook to listen to "for a few minutes before bed" after finishing up another book at 9:30pm which is just a little too awkwardly early for my 10pm bedtime. I fully intended to stop reading at 10, or maybe 10:30. And then it was 1:3oam and the book was over. (I sped up the narration to 2.5x because the narrator was speaking too slow for my taste.)

The characters were so good! I loved Charlie, a fish-out-of-water trans boy at an all-boys boarding school, trying to get his feet under him. He felt so real and warm and awkward, and I really felt his fear of being kicked out of school if someone found out he was trans.

Valentine Academy is intense! There's a weekly posted grade ranking, he's taking all advanced courses, he feels like everyone is so much smarter than him… It really works to keep him feeling isolated and out of place for the first part of the book. The school actually reminded me a lot of Caltech. I went there as an undergrad and I remember feeling a lot of what Charlie feels here. There's not only the intense academic atmosphere and the feeling that literally everyone you meet is smarter than you, but the same variety of quirky (sometimes very quirky) characters as I remember finding at Caltech. I actually ended up feeling an awful lot of nostalgia while reading.

The zany cast of characters at STRIP (the top 5 ranked students) end up slowly befriending Charlie and pulling him out of his shell. I loved watching his bravery grow throughout the book as he realizes he's not as alone as he first thinks.

Not least of those is his roommate, Jasper. Who was Charlie's crush at summer camp before he transitioned. Who doesn't seem to recognize him. Cue drama.

I loved Jasper. Who wouldn't? He's even more quirky than the others and seems determined to befriend Charlie. And there are so many OMG he's definitely going to recognize me now! moments. There is so much tension that builds between them before the secret comes out (and a few more besides).

The entire love letter plot was unhinged, but in a good way. It was exactly the sort of madcap fun I can imagine the students at Caltech getting up to if the school were gender segregated.

The audiobook was very well done. It was too slow for my taste, but then most audiobooks are too slow for my taste. I think I just listen fast? In any case, the narrator did a great job bringing all the quirky characters and unhinged plot situations to life and it was so much fun to listen to. I mean, I listened to the entire thing in one sitting. When I should have been sleeping.

I loved everything about this book and I will absolutely be eagerly anticipating the author's next book.

This seems like a good a time as any to mention that in the Shukufuku opening, Suletta and Miorine are calling each other on the phone.

This gives us a good look at how the current Holder has a Golden Asticassia emblem on their notebook compared to the standard dark blue (compare Suletta's phone to Miorine's) and looking at Miorine's phone shows us that the Holder's first name is rendered in gold as well.

The interface of the online meeting program Vim is using to talk to his investors. We see this same program without changes used 21 years ago in the prologue. It seems that even in the future we never escape the twisted machinations of Zoom meetings....truly this too, is hell.

So, there's a lot here...lot of words. But there are 2 main takeaways I think, one more important than the other.

The first is that if you look under the Mechanic's responsibilities, you can actually see that "Preliminary Maintenance" is one of their duties, so while the teacher for the exercise was definitely being harsh when he wouldn't let Miorine suspend the exam to clean the spray off their Demi Trainer, he wasn't lying when he said that it WAS a part of the assignment.

The second is that this is a BIG manual, and Miorine somehow had it completely memorized (and able to put it into practice) by only reading through it one time. This is meant to demonstrate that she's very smart, obviously, but I think it's also implying that she has a photographic memory. (Which is how she had the entire genome sequence of her mother's tomatoes just at the tip of her fingers)

It's like Martin says, the major media companies (like INN) rely on Spacian Capital, and their reporting on these topics will always be inherently biased towards the people keeping their lights on.

Not text, but Chuchu's family at home seem to primarily be mobile craft operators. (This is probably why in the epilogue, she appears to be working AS a mobile craft operator with Rouji)

Not much here, but I figure it important to mention that in the bottom left, you can see that the Demi Trainer ALSO has a Cockpit Voice Recorder. I had assumed it was strange for Aerial to have one, but perhaps it's standard for all MS units?

Regardless, I wouldn't put it past Prospera to use such a thing for her own ambition...

tbh. I think the fics by nocturneatmidnight their izuleos and their knights fics in general are sooo good. I was reading these before I read that many of the actual game stories (a lot of my original knowledge of enstars came from fic so take that as you will) so I didn't know knights that well but their fics made me so interested in them particularly izuleo and. well. here we are.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

everything they've been through together. they have such an interesting relationship that is shaped by their past experiences and while their past wasn't always nice I don't think they'd change it because it made them who they are today and they're both at a point where they're proud of who they are and how far they've come. also I like when they r mentally ill together in second year

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

they would not fucking be romantic!!!!! they're both aro idc (aroace leo aro gay izumi if you're curious on my hcs) I wrote something on this a while back when I was talking to ashe about how they're secret fourth thing. anyway regardless of aromanticness I don't think either of them would even want a romantic relationship, at least not yet.

Okay so for most of these ships I'm planning on having the chapter I write be about the first (if not only) time Johnny has sex with them. However, I may or may not end up doing that with Kenshi because I've been really into the idea of Johnny and Kenshi actually being in a long term relationship (and getting married to each other after Johnny gets divorced) beginning prior to MKX. So I may end up writing an instance of them having sex while they're already in an established relationship rather than their first time together. Who knows tho! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Kung Lao

Johnny and Kung Lao's sexual awakening! They're going to meet and hook up on the first night of the tournament in MK9. At this point Johnny's never slept with another guy before and Kung Lao's never slept with anyone before so it will be a learning experience for the both of them >;3

My Outworld + Liu Kang Polycule! I have like three scenarios I'm considering for this one right now. In the first two the polycule is already together and in the third one they're not

First scenario: Johnny wants to hook up with Liu, but since he loves Kitana/he and Kitana are already in a relationship Johnny invites her too and makes it a threesome. Kotal finds out about this as well as the fact that Johnny has made "Sleep With Every Man Possible" into his own personal life goal and invites Johnny over. Johnny thinks “hell yeah” and goes over to hook up with Kotal, only to find that Kotal also invited Liu, Kitana, Jade, and Reptile. Johnny ofc is not at all bothered by this, the more the merrier >:3

Second scenario: Johnny is talking to Liu about the polycule's relationship dynamic (basically like a chain, Liu-Kitana-Jade-Kotal-Reptile). Johnny asks if all five of them have ever had sex together. Liu says they have not. Johnny asks if they'd like to, and if he can be invited >:3

Third scenario: Liu tells Johnny which members of the not-yet-together polycule have feelings for whom and why they allegedly can't be together ("I love Kitana but she loves Jade who is in a relationship with Kotal and also Reptile is there") and Johnny is like "Hm. Interesting. >:3" and starts plotting to be matchmaker again

Also like with Lao I headcanon Liu as not having slept with anyone prior to MK9, however I haven't decided for sure whether or not he and Kitana will have had sex by the time stuff happens with Johnny

Okay Vivi I have to admit I'm probably gonna be SUPER influenced by the Rain/Johnny fic you posted recently because I absolutely loved it!!! Rain is DEFINITELY into being praised. Johnny just needs to give him even the smallest amount of positive attention and he'll be set >:3

So while waiting for this long ass line I'm gonna talk for a sec about Jelani (the original version).

You look up any of his info in whatever post on here or my account on toyhouse and under gender you'll find it says non-binary.

When I first came up with this character around late 2006 I had his gender as male. He was born male, assigned male at birth, and identified as male. So if people asked about this particular character or in questions I'd say he was male and used he/him pronouns. Through the years and as I developed him I would then answer this as "unsure/questioning" 'cause I honestly felt it was right for him and honestly I was set on leaving it as unsure/questioning forever but with time and as I discovered the non-binary option I kinda unofficially used it for him. I just kinda fell in love with that idea for him.

So probably like 2 years (maybe) after sitting on that change and really feeling like it just fit the character I said that he identified as non-binary after years of questioning his gender. So now in questions of the character I put down non-binary because that's how he identifies.

Now, his feelings when it comes to being non-binary doesn't mean that he disowns anything and everything within the spectrum of genders. He's very comfortable with he/him, they/them or she/her pronouns.

In fact, Abigail had asked him if he was okay with her referring to him only by she/her which he's totally okay with and ever since then she only uses she/her pronouns when addressing Jelani.

As for how he presents himself, he's basically just masc. He dresses masc, he presents as masc, behaves as masc--you get the idea.

"Okay but he paints his nails and uses eyeliner, mascara and eye shadow."

Okay, and? That shit is for any gender. He. Still. Presents. Himself. As. Masculine. He uses any pronoun but he himself says he's Sanaa's son, Loke's brother, Jelani's grandson, Angelus's husband and so on.

Yes, Angelus sometimes refers to him as his husband but also his spouse (gender neutral) or his wife (Jelani gave him permission to use this for him) as a way to be supportive. He also uses all pronouns for him too.

While we're on the subject of Angelus...he's had he/they for several years now but I recently changed it to he/him, it/its. HOWEVER! The it/its pronouns are only allowed to be used by other queer people.

Abigail also has permission to refer to him as Loke's sister or Ingvarr's daughter or Angelus's wife and so on.

Now, since the start I have had his sexual orientation as pansexual. For the past year and a half I've been kinda playing with it a little. Again, as I've developed him I've played with the idea that after long years he started to kinda question that too.

This feels like an rp session but lol I actually write a fuck ton of bits that I don't publish 'cause they're just little indulgent pieces with no real plot or point or no regard for construction, I just word vomit it into the document. That's where a lot of development comes from.

Anyway, I recently changed his orientation from pansexual to gay.

I always made it clear that even though he was pansexual he had a strong preference for men. In fact, he would often joke that he was more gay than actually pansexual. He has had relationships with women before but they were few and far in between. In fact, at one point he and Ginger were actually a couple. Of the few relationships with women he ever had that one was the longest he had and it only lasted half a year lol.

As the years went by his attraction to women and people who identify as women/female lessened and lessened to the point where he just wasn't interested at all and was only attracted to men and other masc non-binary people. Yes, this absolutely fucking includes trans men. His first romantic partner was a trans man (well, boy, they met when they were around 12 or something like that).

There's no such thing as trans exclusion within my non-evil characters. Ew. Come the fuck on.

I could've just retconned a bunch of stuff but I like doing it this way. It feels natural to how real people explore their identities. So this was just a whole long post just to say Jelani's gay now.

Entry 4/30/25

Okay, so when I usually write in here I'm typically in a terrible mood and want to vent. But right now I'm actually in a pretty decent mood, believe it or not. The only reason that I'm writing in here right now is cause I want to write in here at least once a month. Tonight I'm going to commit to a college and I'm feeling pretty hopeful. I'm not sure if I can say what college I'm going to or if I'll be doxxed, but it's UCR. I absolutely bombed my college applications, so I'm pretty relieved that they let me in. I have to take out loans to attend, and people always say that they regret taking out loans, but I'm #different.

I do feel slightly discouraged due to the fact that everyone in my classes is going to extremely good colleges, but I'm trying to not let it affect me. I was originally worried that I wouldn't be able to find any friends, but I think that I'm capable of making new friends by hopping from school to school. I think that my experience will be what I make of it, so if I go in with a negative mindset, I'll have a negative time.

Something that I've been experimenting with for college is changing my name. I'm not going to put my name in here cause I don't wanna doxx myself, but my name has a lot of ways to be shortened, and I was thinking of shortening it. My biggest concern would be changing my social media handles, cause that seems like a lot of work :(.

The thing that I really love about UCR, though, is the campus. When I toured the campus earlier, it felt like a very Disney Channel original movie in a good way. What I mean is that walking around the campus, I felt like a character in Zoey 101. It was a very aesthetic experience.

I can't wait to leave high school. I've gotten so bored with these people around me. My school is extremely small, too. Everyone knows everyone, and everything that everyone does is predictable. I need a new set of people to meet, cause these people around me are getting boring. Ugh that paragraph sounded soooo bitchy. I like a lot of the people around me, but being around the same people in all of my classes for four years gets tiring. I just crave a change of scenery.

Something that I feel extremely conflicted about is rooming on campus. Don't get me wrong, I'm completely capable of living independently from my family, I've done it on school trips for years, and I'm not scared of getting homesick; I'm able to travel home on the weekends if I'd like. What I'm really concerned about is my roommate.

I've always thought about who my roommate in college would be for my entire life. I've imagined him being a reflection of myself or being the complete opposite. I've imagined different personalities and appearances. All my fantasies have one common factor that we get along. My biggest fear of rooming is that my roommate and I won't get along at all.

I've been considering whether I should just swallow my dignity and post an intro to one of those class of 2029 Instagram pages or just hope for the best and get assigned to a random person. My worst fear is that my roommate is homophobic or gay. If my roommate were homophobic, then I would be scared for myself, but if my roommate were gay, I would be scared that there is sexual tension. I want someone in between some casual straight guy that I can be friends with without him being scared I would molest him in the night.

I feel obligated to make a post to the class of 2029 Instagram page, but I fear that there are not enough good photos of me to post. Those pages are filled with copious amounts of extremely attractive people, and when average-looking people post an introduction, it's quite obvious that they don't fit in with the other people. I fear that if I post an introduction, I would be like one of those average people who don't fit in.

Going to college gives me a lot of mixed feelings. I'm excited to be moving up in the world, but the idea of actually being an adult disgusts me. I want to write more in here, but I say that all the time. Maybe college will bring me enough emotional turmoil that I write in here every day, idk. Wish me luck tho!!

Neon Genesis Evangelion Ep1,2,4,5 -- General Thoughts and Analysis

So sorry for the late-night post! I'm swamped (haha) with Swampcon prep (I'm volunteering and cosplaying both days... if you run into a Diego Brando outside Maid Cafe on Saturday or a Viktor scans you in for registration on Sunday, that's probably me!). I also ended up doing a bit of a deep read on this week's readings, because they gave me some good terminologies to use to better express my ideas for my final essay (I may be a little too excited to write an assigned essay... is that strange of me?)

NGE is the one anime on the assigned list that I've actually watched -- truthfully, I never finished it (I just got distracted), but I am extremely familiar with the plot. I'm a huge fan for religious symbols and psychological/body horror in my media, and I do adore NGE's animation style, so I'm glad to have an excuse to rewatch and catch back up.

Now, onto the analysis -- I think there's a lot NGE has to say, but I'm just going to focus on the themes that align with the reading. We notice fairly early on that Shinji is not too much like the stereotypical boy, contrasted with both his peers and his father. He's quiet, overtly emotional, and refuses to engage in violence until his empathy towards Rei convinces him reluctantly to comply. He's soft spoken, submissive (note his constant yes's to Misato), a coward, and doesn't express the same objectifying heterosexuality that his peers do (he views both Misato and Rei in a seemingly strictly non-sexual light). Shinji is the definition of the queer masculine; he defies from what society expects of the hegemonic masculine. Multiple characters call him out on this (ie, Misato demands of him why he won't "act like a boy"). In accordance with the Heasley reading, it's important to note here that, from what's been shown, despite this masculine-deviance behavior, Shinji does not seemingly define himself as homosexual; in fact, he does seem to show some sort of romantic, non-objectifying attraction towards Rei. By the reading, he could be defined as a straight-queer male.

Speaking of the readings, the Connell essay speaks of the subjugation of gay/straight-queer males by heterosexual males under the system of hegemonic masculinity. This dynamic's description, I feel, perfectly describes the relationship we see between Gendo (Shinji's father) and Shinji. Gendo is firm, uncaring, a person in power -- he is the hegemonic masculine. Shinji, conversely, as a queer masculine male, becomes someone Gendo feels he can control -- note his dialogue to Shinji in ep 1 I believe, in which he states he only called Shinji to him because he finally "had use". I think it's important to note here the dynamics of the three children juxtaposed to Gendo; the other two children are both female (I know we haven't explicitly seen Asuka in these episodes, but I feel she's significant here). Shinji is able to be oppressed and used alongside the women in a patriarchal society, by the hegemonic masculine Gendo, because he is not masculine in the traditional sense. I also feel it's important to call here the reading's segment on the fact hegemonic masculine males will still show kindness/compromise towards some women even whilst oppressing them; this is shown in the way Gendo seemingly cares enough for Rei to injure himself digging her from the pod.

I don't "hate" it per se. I don't want it bleached off ao3 or anything. If people want to read it then whatever I guess, there's a whole novel about a Canadian woman who fucks a bear so it's not like there isn't precedent. I was on tumblr when it became a thing, I e-dated someone who was on the first wave of omegaverse fanfiction after the initial Supernatural kinkmeme post. Quite literally there when the deep magic was written. I saw it all happen and kick off, I thought it was a hoot at the time.

What annoys me about it is that it's invaded fandom in general. As usual fandom will say one thing "don't push sexual content on people without their consent" and then do another, which is putting omegaverse shit on your dash without asking. Tumblr Savior doesn't work on mobile either so there's no filtering it. It reminds me of how choking has become a pervasive porn thing that has invaded real life, if you don't want to be choked during sex then you get a lot of shitty attitude, and if you don't want to see omega garbage on your dash then you can also get shitty attitude. I was in a persona 5 server where a moderator put a user in a timeout chair for posting it outside the designated channel (there was a special channel for triggering sex stuff) and it resulted in an internet brawl. (Whatever you can imagine insert it here, the details aren't important. Everyone felt oppressed and was arguing over who was more oppressed.) It was very tedious to sit through and it all stemmed from the fact that people just push this stuff on you and get mad when you say "I don't want to see this."

I actually didn't used to have a firm opinion on this stuff UNTIL it started invading fandom spaces. I was once called "queerphobic and a bad feminist ally" for pointing out that omegaverse stuff was very disturbing for many people and should come with tags and warnings attached. They shut up fast when I replied I was bisexual but yeah.... I think it radicalized me in a way lmao. It's an attitude that's been there since the beginning, there have been entire essays written about how getting railed by a dog dick is the most feminist and gender affirming shit ever. But there are internet users who genuinely believe they are fighting for gay rights by writing/reading omegaverse and that's blatantly not the case. It feels like stolen valor, there's real gay oppression happening in the world and then there's first worlders who think it's "queerphobic" to not eroticize anal leakage and dog dicks? Come on. So that's something I dislike intensely these days. 10 years ago when it first popped off I just wrote it off as something I could ignore. And then fandom made it something that is impossible to ignore.

And for the record, yes, I do know most enthusiasts aren't like this. My own partner is into it and we just don't bring it up, been together for almost 4 years now, etc.

What I don't like (not even hate, just dislike) is how pervasive it is and it's just assumed that everyone loves it and that it's okay to push it everywhere into everything. I catalog books for a living and there are romance novels now where omegaverse is the theme and I'm like "jesus christ" lmao, content where the Assigned Bottom at Birth defecates to show his affection for the Assigned Top at Birth is now mainstream, I have to see it irl too. There's no escaping it. That upset me a lot unironically, I found it incredibly threatening that dog dicks is what's associated with "queer activism" in the real world. The authors that write this stuff are often the kind of people who are convinced they're tragic heroes fighting the good fight, it's awful.

Though interestingly when I mentioned it to friends who read it, they unanimously agreed that they wished it hadn't made the jump to irl. The lawsuit thing seems to have really embarrassed everybody. There's a big divide between the authors who have mainstreamed it and users who read it where not-pushy users desperately don't want a spotlight but the self pub authors are convinced that they are activists. It's interesting, I could probably write a whole essay examining the divide.

Overall I wish I could go back to when it was easy to ignore and super missable but that isn't the world we live in anymore, so if people are going to push this content everywhere I'm going to make some jokes at the expense of them. I think everyone can live with that.
