how I take notes on non fiction books
I recently made a post on my study method, and decided to make a whole separate post on my note taking method. The structure of the notes I write doesn't vary too much from my lecture notes to things I might have to read. A couple of useful informations you might want to know before I start actually talking about note writing is that I am mainly focused on studying history (tho I have had other humanities exams in my degrees), and that I study for oral exams in which the material is mainly composed of non fiction books, but sometimes include articles as well as lecture notes. Somehow I have also failed to mention that I am speaking about HANDWRITTEN NOTES. I only do handwritten notes, I don't work well digitally, so keep that in mind. And with this being said brace yourselves for a very long post. The bullet points I will be making are not really in a specific order and I will be including a few pictures too.
The first step when I am working on the materials for an exam is to figure out in which order I will be reading (and writing notes) the books. This hasn't really much to do with the notes themselves, but it's important to know which of your materials is more general and what other things go more in depth, so that you don't struggle too much while studying. Another plan related thing I always do is to write down each chapter of the book I have to study on my bullet journal and how many pages it is so I can plan my studying more comfortably. If the chapters are very long, and divided in subchapters I sometimes also write those down.
The goal of the notes I write is to fully take the place of the book, so they tend to be very detailed and long. I do this because the very act of writing is part of my study method, and working on things I have written down in my own words is just much better for the type of learner I am. So basically I read the book only once, then it goes back on the shelf and I work exclusively on the notes. This means my notes need to be detailed and well organized.
My method is to read a chapter, underlining important stuff as I am reading, and then right after I am done reading I work on the notes for that chapter before moving onto the next. I do this because it makes the note writing more effortless, I am fresh with informations I just read and I basically just need to skim over what I have underlined.
On underlining, since it is so important. I underline everything I will be including in my notes, it might seem much as sometimes it consists of full paragraphs, instead of key words. But this is okay because my notes I don't just copy and paste.
To create useful notes you need to be re-elaborating the informations. You need to read, understand what you read, and be able to write it down using your own words. That way the notes will be easier to review, they will often be composed of shorter sentences, and by doing so you are also actively making writing part of your studying and not just a mindless activity.
Personally I don't work well with full pages summaries, I need the text to be visually broken into sentences/small paragraphs, and I use a lot of symbols as well as abbreviations.
Symbols and abbreviations are in a way part of your very own language when you are writing notes, you tend to develop these with time, but they are so useful. I personally use different types of arrows, all caps words, position of the text in the page, different methods of highlighting and abbreviations (usually for words that come up often like country names, for example Italy becomes ita, France becomes fr, etc.).
Your notes need to be useful for you, they don't have to necessarily be comprehensible for another person (which means you can and will fuck up sentence structure because sometimes skipping a couple of words makes the notes shorter and still understandable), and they do not have to be pretty. They should be as tidy as possible, but again that might change from person to person, I have some very messy looking notes that make total sense to me. With time you'll learn what works best for you.
I have a visual memory so as I mentioned titles, highlighters, all caps, the placement on the page and other similar things are very important in my notes. I cannot fully exapain some of these things because some definitely only make sense to me in the moment (like the words I choose to write in all caps, or the way I highlight things).
I like to have a clear chapter and subchapter break (so that in case I need to refer back to the book it's super effortless). I like to write those with a red pen, usually the chapter title is in all caps and the subchapter in coursive, but it really depends.
I use only two highlighters in each set of notes yellow for dates, and the colour I associate with the book/the subject of the book (I have synesthesia I don't make the rules when it comes to colours). This of course might change depending your preferences and on the element of your notes you want to focus on. I like to have spacific colour for dates and time periods, because of course while studying history that is a fundamental element. If you are focusing on other subjects you might want to have a specific colour for names, or other elements.
I like to leave a big side margin to add either key words (especially in lecture notes since they might be messier and jump around informations more often), or additional information in a second time (sometimes it happens, after you read another book, or attended a particular lecture you have to add a couple of sentences and I rather have a blank space that never gets used rather than no space at all for emergencies).
I honestly mentioned everything that came to mind right away, but since note writing is now basically a mindless skill I have been practicing for years I surely forgot about something. I might end up adding to this post in the future or write another one. My note-writing method has also changed a lot thought the years from high school to university, it's a skill I have been perfecting for the past decade. This to say that depending on what you are working on things might change, and by experimenting with different things you might find out things that work very well for you. If you have any questions on specific things I didn't mention or that wen't clear my inbox is always open and I am more than happy to help.
Since this post is already very very long I am adding the pictures below the cut
Example of a page of notes before and after highlighting
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Example of symbols and structure of the notes and the way I highlight things (in which you'll hopefully be able to understand my handwriting, and in which there might be some spelling errors but alas that often happens in my real notes as well so if there are any it's for the sake of accuracy lmao). If I end up adding informations on the margins I always use a pen of a different color so I can tell which informations I got from what source (ex. main notes from lecture, colorful notes from additional article).
Tumblr media
Example of messier notes in which the main text in black are the notes I took during lectures and the additional colorful text was added while writing the materials (I rarely do this, it usually happens when the lectures follow a book precisely, which happens when we have to study books or summaries written by the professor). As you can see I often use post it notes to add more writing space, and sometime I even use them to create visually separated sections. If I end up adding some drawings I also usually like to have them on post it notes so they stand out more (and if you are wondering why the hell would an history student need drawings it's usually either because I need a map or a region/state to mark things out, or when studying for archaeology exams I often needed visual references, for example to identify different types of vases or decorations).

Active Reading
Tumblr media
Active reading - reading with a purpose.
When it comes to critical analysis, the purpose of active reading is to familiarize yourself with your primary text and secondary sources to create a thorough and accurate analysis.
You can engage in active reading by paying attention to the type, author, audience, and purpose of a source.
Type
In writing, texts are often categorized based on the form, style, and purpose they share.
Examples: Fiction, nonfiction, horror, fantasy, and mystery.
Each type of writing typically follows a set of rules that can help us better understand the author’s purpose and the meaning of the text itself.
When reading your text, consider how the type of text shapes your understanding of it by asking the following questions:
What type of text is it (e.g., essay, play, comedy, romance, etc.)? Keep in mind that a text may have more than one type.
What stylistic or literary elements are important to that type of text (e.g., imagery, rhyme scheme, dialogue, etc.)?
How does the type of text impact the author’s message? Is that type of text appropriate for the author’s purpose?
Does the author use any stylistic or literary elements uncommon to that type of text?
How does the type of text enhance or take away from the author’s message?
Author
Authors are the people who created a text.
An author’s personal experiences often impact the type and content of his or her work.
Researching an author’s background helps us recognize and understand what influenced his or her work.
As you read through a text, ask yourself the following:
Who created the text?
When did the author create the text?
Where did the author create the text?
In what context was the primary text written (e.g., social, cultural, political, economic)?
Are there any significant events in the author’s life that may have influenced the type and content of the text?
Audience
The audience consists of anyone who reads a text.
Usually, an author considers his or her intended audience when making decisions about a source’s type, tone, and content.
When reading a source, think about how the audience shapes the author’s decisions by asking questions such as:
Who is the intended audience of the source (e.g., artists, scientists, nobles, etc.)?
How does the audience view the author (e.g., credible, biased, etc.)?
How would the audience react to the content of the source (e.g., agree, disagree, indifference, etc.)? Why would the audience react that way?
Are there any other audiences the author may not have considered?
Purpose
Purpose is an author’s reason for writing a text.
3 of the most common examples of purpose include to persuade, to inform, and to entertain.
Identifying an author’s purpose for writing is useful for determining whether an author’s text is written effectively or not.
As you read your sources, consider whether the author accomplishes his or her purpose by asking a few questions:
1. Why did the author write the text (e.g., to inform, to persuade, to entertain, to critique, etc.)? (Note: An author may have multiple purposes for writing.)
2. What is the main idea, theme, or argument of the source?
3. How does the author attempt to accomplish his or her purpose?
How does the author use ethos, logos, and/or pathos?
How does the author use literary or stylistic elements (e.g., character, symbolism, setting, etc.)?
4. Does the author effectively accomplish his or her purpose? Why or why not?
Additional Tips on Active Reading
It’s also useful to read your text from different perspectives.
The first time, read as a consumer. You are reading for enjoyment.
The second time, read as an academic. You are reading to learn and understand.
The third time, read as a critic. You are reading to question both the text’s meaning and the author’s decisions.
NOTE
It’s a good idea to take notes and record your thoughts throughout your active reading process.
Actively reading your sources helps you consider them from more than one perspective.
Active reading also fosters critical thinking.
Once you finish actively reading your sources, you can begin drafting your critical analysis.

hello!
so since my life is kinda a disaster right now i decided to “reopen” this account because i want to share my study journay (but not only) and have positive vibes. i had this page i believe in my first and second and second year of uni and now i’m not a student anymore since i graduated in february, i did spend a lot of money on taking the ielts test to apply for a master in communication design in my dream uni just to think i made it in and realised the day after that i did not and i was just in the waiting list and right know i have little to no plans for my future because i do not know if i’m going to be in and to find a reasonable priced studio flat in the most expensive city of italy.
my only good news is that my aunt when found out that i did not get in told me to go and live with her family in london for some months this way since i already have a bachelor degree can apply for jobs in the design fields and do some networking. it’s sounds like a dream if only my heart wasn’t broken from the fact that i will not go to milan and live the life me and my friends where imagining.
i know what’s the right thing to do and it all seem i sign from the universe: passing the ielts test with a band 7.5 while i was expecting a band 6, failing to get in the master of my dream and living in milan, found a spot to do my passport so it will be ready for september, my aunt asking me to go to london right when there will be a design festival and then apply for jobs there. i’m torn apart and don’t know what to do so while i decide what i want to do with my life i’m going to post here my post-uni studies like language learning (chinese and korean) and design courses to add to my cv and make new projects.
so how are you doing?

Revathi - A Life in Trans Activism by A. Revathi and Nandini Murali
Tumblr media
When Revathi’s powerful memoir, The Truth About Me, first appeared in 2011, it caused a sensation. Readers learned of Revathi’s childhood unease with her male body, her escape from her birth family to a house of hijras (the South Asian generic term for transgender people), and her eventual transition to being the woman she always knew she was. This new book charts her remarkable journey from relative obscurity to becoming India’s leading spokesperson for transgender rights and an inspiration to thousands.
Revathi describes her life, her work in the NGO Sangama, which works with people across a spectrum of gender identities and sexual orientations, and how she rose from office assistant to director in the organization. Today she is an independent activist, theatre person, actor and writer, and works for the rights of transgender persons.
In the second part of the book, Revathi offers the reader an insight into one of the least talked about experiences on the gender trajectory: that of being trans men. Calling several female-to-male trans persons her ‘sons’, Revathi puts before us their moving, passionate and sometimes tragic stories of marginalization, courage, resistance and triumph.
An unforgettable book, A Life in Trans Activism will leave the reader questioning the ‘safe’ and ‘comfortable’ binaries of male/female that so many of us take for granted.

Finding Banned Books Online: Actual Resources
Hey, it's me - a version of Clove who is now able to access their anger through means I am not going to delve into on a public space. Hello!
I have continued to get myself very upset over the people who tear apart anyone who makes the vaguest attempt to support, or even provide mixed opinions on the IA lending library. They insist there are so many ways to do this already through resources provided by libraries, but don't actually say any of those solutions.
Because Google is free, right? It's free and definitely still a viable way to easily access information. We all agree Google is normal and reliable, and that people these days actually know how to manipulate search terms in a way that effectively provides information. That's why it's such a great thing to say when people ask questions instead of actually providing information that could easily solve the problem in your favor. Great!
Anyways, I went ahead and did research so I can offer an actual guide to people looking to access - in this case specifically banned books - without the aid of piracy or the Internet Archive. These are programs created by libraries, fully legal, though admittedly not always the easiest to access.
The Palace Project: Banned Books Club
This seems to be the best option I was able to find. It's an app created by the Digital Public Library of America where you can access a variety of digital library archives, including the Banned Books Club. You don't need address or proof of ID - you don't even need your legal name.
You get a digital barcode you can use to access books for about 20 days at a time. They have a vast collection of e-books and audiobooks, as well as a bevy of fiction and nonfiction. Cool!
Brooklyn Public Library: Books UnBanned
If you're a young person in the United States who has their apps monitored, this is another alternative. The Brooklyn Public Library waives out-of-state e-card fees for youth that last a year (You might be able to reapply).
They cover you from 13-21, assuming you can work up the nerve to apply directly by emailing them, or messaging them on their youth-led Instagram account (@bklynfuture).
The Uncensored Library
Are you outside the United States? Do you have a computer that runs Minecraft? This is not technically a way to read Ulysses or The Hate You Give, but The Uncensored Library is a massive world seed dedicated to preserving (I think mainly) journalistic articles covering news in countries where censorship is way more prominent. This is an outlier to my point but it kicks ass and I think it has a place on this list.
There are other options out there like Hoopla, but it looks like a lot of them require an existing library card number. Libby has a nice UI thing that guides you towards the options in making an online library card for a local branch, assuming that's something you are able to do.
This is what I was able to find through about 45 minutes of searching. If someone else has an additional insight I would LOVE to add it. Libraries are working so, so hard to provide as much of a reach as they can, but unfortunately it's difficult to spread awareness without Spreading Awareness, if you know what I mean.
At the same time, if you're a person who is just spouting that these resources exist without either naming what they are and/or acknowledging that there are a small small small handful of options - it definitely seems like you're less interested in sharing information to encourage a positive change, and more invested in looking right and informed.
I spent almost an hour to find two actual sources to share. If I wanted to read a book I didn't have access to, it would be infinitely easier to give up. It is so fucking easy not to make the effort to read a book that could potentially change your life. It's so fucking easy just to not read! So hopefully this helps someone expand their horizons in a meaningful way, or just have better access to a library system that they might not otherwise have!

Hey so uhh. If you live in the US, your local library probably needs a lot of help. Some ways to show up for public and school libraries and librarians right now:
-Show up to library board meetings and school board meetings and say you're in favor of freedom to read. If you can't show up to the meetings, write letters and make phone calls. Bonus points if you're a parent and say you want to defend your right to decide what your child is allowed to read.
-Keep track of local and state news regarding libraries around you and inform the appropriate elected officials of your stance in favor of freedom to read. Here, phone calls are best, but emails and letters are also ok. The Literary Activism newsletter from BookRiot is my favorite roundup of censorship and library news around the US.
-Call your federal Congressional representative and tell them to support the Fight Book Bans Act.
-VOTE in local elections and look out for dog whistles like "parental choice" and "protecting children's innocence" in candidate platforms.
-VOTE Democrat in state and national level elections so we don't have to deal with these people (direct quotes from the article above):
"Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation’s 900-page ideological blueprint for a potential second Trump administration, declares in its opening pages that “pornography, manifested today in the omnipresent propagation of transgender ideology and sexualization of children,” should be stripped of First Amendment protection and outlawed."
"In May, after two religious conservatives who had sought to remove books from the libraries won seats on the [Post Falls, Idaho] library board, its members began overhauling the library’s policies on collections. A draft, viewed by The New York Times, seeks to ban materials containing “any description, exhibition, presentation or representation, in whatever form, of nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement or sadomasochistic abuse,” including “buttocks with less than a fully opaque covering.”"
⬆️ The word "description" means this policy could remove nearly every book from the library in question.
What we're looking at here is fascism attacking public access to information. It needs to be taken seriously and dealt with as a real threat.

pros and cons of being in a very small fandom (as someone who reads books on the daily and is apart of many TINY fandoms, with one being only me still active on tumblr) pros: - not that many shipping wars as, say, pjo - not too many antis trying to force some1 to dislike a character - everyone's more likely to be friends. real community feel. you all read each other's headcanons and be nice to each other mostly - less likelihood of drama...usually - less harassment (at least from my perspective) - less likely to be found by anti's cons: - hardly any art for your favorite characters - not that many people to engage with - a lot of people in the old fandom have gone unactive, meaning a lot less people to talk to about the fandom - virtually nothing for you to read - less people that are interested in the things you make

Following up on this and this:
Later on, when the big book is over (Manon enjoyed it to the point where she listened to Dorian read it every single night. She got so into it to the point where she’d just fall asleep while Dorian read it but he wasn’t too fond of that because the book is quite creepy and he didn’t want her to have nightmares because of that so he didn’t want this to be the last thing she did before falling asleep)
Anyway! After finishing the book Manon discovered that she missed their little activity. She is still not reading, she’s just addicted to Dorian reading out loud for her and that was another thing she didn’t want to deal with but she just went with it.
A few days later, she was home by herself, Dorian had texted that he will be a little late that evening. Taking the chance, she looked through the massive library, her eyes scanning all the different spines and examining all the different book covers.
She settled on a book that looked interesting. Now, she still has a very hard time expressing her feelings and she’s so grateful that Dorian just seems to understand her even when she doesn’t say much.
With that thought in mind, she pulled the book out and went up to their bedroom. She placed the book on Dorian’s side of the bed for him to find when he returned. Also, Manon being Manon, she’s a mix of both awkward and shy when it comes to these things so she just… disappeared in the office and got busy with work because she doesn’t want to talk about it. She’s still not interested in these books, she just likes hearing Dorian’s voice and this is one way for her to do this.
Dorian was a little surprised when he saw a book on his pillow. He doesn’t recall taking it out of the library and even if he did he wouldn’t place it there. Then he realized that it’s probably Manon who did it.
He couldn’t help a small smile snaking up his lips at realizing what her action meant. He also wasn’t going to bring it up. He knows that it’s hard for her and she’s letting him know these things subtly.
So he let it be. In turn, Manon took to the habit of picking out a book and discreetly telling Dorian that this was what she wanted to read next. And he’s always happy to oblige.
#booklr#books and reading#throne of glass#manon blackbeak#tog#dorian havilliard#manon x dorian#manorian#it’s like they both enjoy the activity#but poor Manon is not even aware she likes the books she just thinks it’s Dorian she’s interested in#well she is but she’s also drawn to these stories#with time Dorian learned of her preferences and started buying books he knows she’ll enjoy#his next big step was going with Manon to a bookstore and letting her pick the books#but that didn’t go well because she got overwhelmed and also remembered that this is the kind of thing that would make her#grandmother livid so she just shut down#she kept thinking of her grandmother’s reaction if she saw her here doing this#all of her cruel words and anger just stormed through Manon’s mind and she had to get out of there#Dorian figured that online shopping is the better option because of what happened#he hates it and wants Manon to not feel so awful about enjoying things#but it’s hard since she’s still with her grandmother#like she’s HER family and despite everything she doesn’t want to get on her grandmothers bad side#she’s still trying her best and the old woman still have a very firm hold on her#Dorian hates it but he understands she’s Manon’s only family (aside from Asterin) and she won’t just turn her back towards her no matter#terrible she is#all he can do is damage control and try to make Manon enjoy herself away from that evil woman#honestly he hates her enough for the both of them
