oooogghhh hang on just a SECOND. "jade eye/hong lu as the jade in the cycle" is THAT why hong lu (translated as "precious jade") isnt called jia baoyu, the main character of his literary source, like everyone else is named after theirs???? i THOUGHT that was odd

First off, I think you got them mixed up... Bao-yu does actually translate to precious jade :) he has that name because of the jade he's born with in his mouth. (precious= Bao jade=Yu)

About Hong Lu's name:

Hong Lu's name comes from the Chinese title of the book (hóng lóu mèng). I haven't fully cooked on this but him Being the book could mean any number of things. He's the only sinner named in this way and it's genuinely so fascinating to me.

I think we can consider one of the alternate titles for this book (The Story of the Stone) here. There's five proposed names for the novel, but the author died before picking a name so Dream of the Red Chamber is just one of five potential names for the book. The best english translation (for most people to read) chose that alternate title because the translator believed it suited the book better.

The Stone mentioned within that title is none other than the Jade that became/was Bao-yu. Within the story, the entire text of the novel was engraved onto the jade at its final resting point, which a monk copied down and brought into the world for publication. It's pretty unserious but classic novels LOVE frame stories the same way hong lu fans love over analyzing his five lines per canto

I do think there will be some kind of "ambiguously human" angle for Hong Lu. Project Moon LOVES exploring what it means to be human (looks at Angela) (looks at Nagel Und Hammer) (looks at. really anything they write) and what better character to explore that with than the one who is simultaneously human and inhuman within the source material!

I don't think it means Hong Lu couldn't be a straightforward-ish adaptation of Bao-yu or anything, but it was an Intentional choice by PJM to choose the name Hong Lu instead of going with Jia Bao-yu or even Bao-yu (there is a "mirror Bao-yu" within the book. it's very scary)

They could do so much with it if I'm being honest. He could very well be a mix of multiple characters within the book and we won't know til the canto drops or he says something incredibly telling :)

The jade is so fascinating to me. I can only really guess at what Hong Lu's deal is until canto 8 drops but theres SO MUCH to bite on oh my god. Project Moon please let me see all that shit early i PROMMY i won't tell anyone if you let me experience canto 8 ahead of time. please. sobbing crying I need to know what it all means!!!!

In the protection of this Polycrub a Citrus × microcarpa (calamondin orange, Panama orange, Philippine lime, calamansi lime, acid orange) was thriving and covered in fruit. This small evergreen tree has white, fragrant flowers which are followed by small yellow-orange fruit, which are used like lemons or limes and taste somewhere between a lemon and a satsuma.

i’m incredibly sleep deprived and nearly falling asleep as i’m typing so i don’t account for anything in this post okay

also don’t question me being sleep deprived at 10pm. idk either

anyways i think kisaki has his own little mini fridge in which he stores some soft drinks, a bottle of beer that hanma snuck in (only one because kisaki doesn’t really like beer) and, most importantly, a few lemons. he’s always stocked up during summer. he can’t even remember why, but he’s made it a habit to eat a cooled down slice of lemon or two during the heat, as some sort of refreshment. he’s very insecure about this as the one guy he eventually told made fun of him for it because it’s so strange. but he finds it somehow just works best for him when he wants to cool down.

he also always keeps a bowl of frozen grapes in his freezer. there’s also a teeny tiny snowman that hanma made for him. well, actually, it’s a replacement he made himself, because the power went out once and it melted, flooding his freezer, but he didn’t have the heart to tell hanma so he subtly kept him away from his freezer for four months until snow fell again and he could replace it with a new snowman. hanma still thinks it’s the original.

also. shower oranges!! (for anyone confused, look it up on reddit, there’s a whole subreddit for it. no, it’s not a fetish/kink. at least not for me i just think that shower oranges are neat) i think both kisaki and hanma have shower oranges. kisaki does treat them a little violently sometimes, when he fails. hanma, on the other hand, is very gentle with his shower oranges. someone once wrote a fic about him having hypochondria (health anxiety) and it hasn’t left me since so, even if he knows it’s stupid, he fears citrus fruits coming in contact with his skin. eating them? no problem, he knows that his insides are more resistent against acids. he hates pineapples, though solely because they actually feel/taste acidy. he loves oranges but can only barely eat them even when he’s extra careful, so when he found oranges in kisaki’s shower and got an explanation after asking what they’re for, a new world had opened before his eyes. now he tries to keep some oranges and tangerines ready for his showers because he doesn’t have any problems with getting dirty when the water immediately washes it away anyway.

Key lime pie is my favorite dessert, so my boss got me a little box of artisinal key lime candies for Christmas, but they don't even taste even remotely like candy. They're acrid and chemically, and they coat your tongue. They're like cough drops without the menthol.

Lemon pledge.

They taste like lemon pledge wood polish; if you've ever sprayed a table and some of the aerosol wafted into your mouth, then you know exactly what these candies taste like. It's less a flavor, per se, and more a very strong scent that you feel way in the back of your throat.

It's like the sour apple spray vets use to keep pets from biting furniture, or the bitterant they coat switch cartridges with so little kids won't put them in their mouths.

If you gave this to me blindfolded, I would not immediately assume this was meant to be eaten; this is not an inviting flavor. Maybe it's just a bad batch, but the box has contact info on it and I feel the need to be that bitch and let somebody know what I think.
