“They have [insert F/F ship] right here!” There are people who are fine with F/F relationships but not M/M relationships, and vice versa. I’ll admit, I thought Nygmobblepot shippers (I ship them, too) were just being whiney until they put out a casting call for season 5 asking for M/F and F/F couples (only, though they didn’t use that word) as background actors. 👀

“[insert M/M ship made of 2 secondary characters] are canon now, so they’re not homophobic!” Yeah, those 2 secondary characters, but they would not dare make these 2 main male characters canon.

a cute harringrove thing for you: billy being in the middle of trying to do something but he keeps shaking away bits of hair that get into his eyes and steve just comes up behind him, puts his hair into a bun, then casually goes back to where he was while billy's stunned and blushing before he returns to his task with a big grin on his face

The AC's out.

Billy's cracked the unit open with a flathead screwdriver he found under the sink and a few choice words. July hit hard. Sweat drips down his nose as he tries to fix and not kick a heavy metal box down three stories.

In the small kitchen just a few feet behind his hunched back, Steve's popping more ice out and yelling at the radio - a Dodgers game has gone to shit.

Billy swipes his sweat-stuck curls back just to have all of them tumble right back in the way again.

Summers always leave Billy regretting growing out his hair.

He hadn't meant to. A couple months without a haircut grew into a couple years where a couple of half-assed snicks with the scissors he uses for zip ties and toe nails were all he made do with. Every year he forgets how much of it there is when summer arrives to remind him.

Snapping back up, screwdriver in a vice-grip, Billy yanks his hair back with both hands and yells FUCK YOU at the stained popcorn ceiling and his own mane fried with West Hollywood humidity.

"What's wrong now? What happened?" Steve has the honest nerve to say after over an hour of this.

"I'm shaving my head."

A deep sigh and Steve's opening some cabinet that creaks and needs to be oiled - the deal when they first moved in was Billy dealt with the electric shit and Steve got everything that wouldn't have him sizzling when he got distracted.

Plumbing means rock, paper, scissors comes out and goddamnit if Billy doesn't lose every single round.

He and the plunger have built a relationship.

Billy blames dying and coming back with fried nerves and a second-rate case of stigmata making his every joint he's got stiff, his hands getting the worst of it. He'd be a lousy second coming anyways.

"That time of year again, huh?" Steve says.

He stands behind Billy, swatting away his frustrated steel-grip to comb through Billy's curls, pulling them back and away.

"There are these things - they're called hair-ties," Steve gently pulls Billy's hair through elastic, "And I know you like using rubber bands because you're a freak," Slowly he winds Billy's overgrown hair around, "But these are, like, at least twice as good. Now, we just twist," He twists, "And twist some more and - boom! Done. I'm awesome."

Steve spins Billy around by the shoulders twice, his sweaty feet squeaking on the scratched up oak floors. He holds Billy in place, sweaty hands on Billy's sweaty nape, sweaty thumbs running circles, and it doesn't seem to matter much to him that the AC is broken and they're reaching the peak 90s on the thermostat.

Steve's looking at him.

All tender.

All sweet.

A little tipsy from better beer than they chugged in high school. It's been seven years since they hit the highway and left Indiana for good. Three more months and five more days and they'll hit eight.

"Oh no." Steve croons at him. Smile turning cotton soft. Those sweaty hands move to cup Billy's face and those running thumbs rub just under Billy's eyes. "Why are we crying?"

"It's hot." Billy says.

Pinching his ears around his piercings, Steve tells him, "You're hot."

Billy sniffles. Snot drips, meets his upper lip and Steve wipes it off - eight years worth of tears and snot and blood and spunk and so much sweat.

And so much fucking good shit.

From an open window in their cramped apartment, a slice of warmed July breeze catches on the back of Billy's newly bared neck. He tosses the screwdriver somewhere.

"And," Steve pecks him on the lips, bites at his nose to make sure Billy gets heat-stroke, "You've got a great ass."

The AC can wait a little longer.

53. “Who crawls through someone’s window at 4am to go for ice cream?!”

there's a heatwave in hawkins. one of those overbearingly humid nights where you kick the sheets off your bed and can't even think about wearing clothes without developing systems of heatstroke.

steve's been tossing and turning all night, relishing in the occasional few seconds of breeze that comes sweeping in through his open window every now and then.

it does absolutely nothing. he needs to invest in a fan since his dad refuses to turn on the ac to an acceptable temperature to combat the heat. "when you pay your own bills, you can do what you want to the thermostat, steven."

honestly, what was the point of having money if you were going to be this stingy with it?

he flops onto his back with a huff, staring up at the ceiling. contemplates diving headfirst into his pool despite the odd hour. and barb's death still lingering under the surface...

a bang comes from beside his window in that moment, like some fucked up cosmic timing to emphasize the terror steve still feels sometimes being in his own house.

but he's willing to brush it off as an odd neighborhood sound until he sees a shadow figure peaking above the windowsill...crawling into his room...stumbling over his table creating all sorts of his noise he's sure his parents will wake up to and-

"fucking- god dammit, what the fuck!"

steve's spine relaxes when he realizes it's just billy. but only a little.

"what the hell are you doing?" steve whisper-shouts, getting up on his knees and leaning over to peak at billy sprawled on his bedroom floor. he looks over his shoulder to his door, makes sure his parents aren't on their way over to ream him a new one for all the commotion.

"you always sleep in your skivvies, pretty boy?" billy laughs, still on his back, looking up at steve.

steve looks down at himself, realizes he's in just a pair of tighty-whities. fucking great. whatever. not like he and hargrove haven't seen each other in less, what with sharing the school showers... and maybe steve's bed. and the backseat of the beamer. and any other place they can sneak off to for a quick fuck now that they're... not dating, but definitely sleeping together with more frequency than they do anyone else. whatever that means.

"what are you doing here, billy?" steve asks, more annoyed now. scoots back on his bed while the other boy grabs onto the edge to hoist himself up.

he looks good, the bastard. in cut off denim shorts and that stupid everlast crop that haunts steve's dreams.

"if you're looking to get laid, forget it. it's too hot for that shit."

"that's the perfect time to do it," billy grins. and steve can only tell because billy angles just right that the moonlight glints off one of canines. an entirely different monster steve needs to be worried about.

"not here for that, anyway," billy says after steve lets a moment pass in annoyed silence. "let's go get ice cream."

steve balks. checks the alarm clock by his bed to make sure it's exactly what time he thinks it is. "who crawls through someone's window at 4 am to go for ice cream?!"

"someone who just smoked a joint and has the munchies, and has a fuck buddy with the keys to an ice cream shop he works at."

oh, he's really lost his fucking mind.

"i am not breaking into the mall- my job - because you have a hankering for ice cream in the dead of night!"

"i'll suck your dick after..." billy states, like he's negotiating prices down at a flea market.

steve groans. doesn't want to think about the person he's become as he gets out of bed and throws clothes on.

"if i get fired, i'm taking your lifeguard checks for the rest of the summer," steve grumbles as he lets them in through the back entrance of the mall.

"if you get fired, you can spend the rest of the summer admiring my glorious, god-like physique at the pool for free," billy quips back, pushing past steve into the back halls of the mall.

"i can't stand you," steve mutters under his breath, following billy anyway.

it's a short walk down to the back entrance of scoop's. it takes steve a second to find his key, and just as he hears the lock click, there's a loud creaking from the other end of the hall that spooks him, has him opening the door and shoving billy inside, crowding him in on the wall behind the door, hand to his mouth to keep him from making noise.

steve keeps his eyes on the door, waiting for it to open and for them to get caught and this whole night to go to shit because he was too horny, apparently, to say no billy fucking hargrove, and-

he jolts back when something warm and wet licks up his palm. realizes it's billy and looks at his hand in disgust. "that's so fucking gross!"

"well stop acting like a paranoid baby and get me my damn rocky road! you're killing my buzz, harrington!"

steve wants to fight him. the urge may be worse than the night at the byers'.

billy shoves past him, going straight to the large walk in freezer.

"no, yeah, help yourself, why not."

steve sits at the table in the break room and waits for billy to come back out with a pint of rocky road that's definitely coming out of steve's paycheck, so. thanks for that one, william.

billy takes a seat on the table just next to where steve's been resting his head on his hand, the early morning hour finally getting to him.

"shit tastes so much better when you're high," billy says - moans, really. stirs a little something in steve's pants, has him feeling more awake, at least.

"you know i do actually have to work here tomorrow."

billy shrugs, scarfing down a spoonful of ice cream. "just make that lesbian you work with cover for you."

"what lesbia- robin?!" steve sits up straighter now. "she's not a lesbian!" he scoffs. "you think just because you're gay everyone else is."

billy fixes him with a pointed look like steve's missing the point of something. says "mhm..." and goes back to his ice cream.

whatever.

steve goes back to trying to get some semblance of rest while billy finishes off his late night snack, but is interrupted by a glob of melted ice cream hitting his cheek, only to be quickly licked off by his b&e partner.

steve swipes at his cheek with the back of his hand. "ew, come on man, what the fu-"

"all done with my ice cream," billy announces proudly, slamming the pint down on the table. "i believe a blowjob is owed, and i am a man of my word..."

billy puts his foot on steve's chair in the space between his legs, pushing him back so there's enough space for billy to climb down off the table and fall to his knees at steve's feet.

he didn't think the blowjob would be here, but... hell. why not add one more crime to tonight's festivities.

"better make it worth it, hargrove."

and when billy grins this time, steve gets the full effect in the overhead florescent lighting of the ice cream shop.

"when do i ever disappoint?"

my taste in ships for Stranger Things is so fun because for some people there’s multiple options i ship them with, for example Robin. I prefer Ronance, but I don’t mind Robin and Vicky or Robin and Chrissy. it’s like yeah just let the girl do whatever fits best for the story.

But then I look at Steve and I’m like “yeah there is now only one person I ship you with, and it’s Eddie.” Like i’m just not a fan of Stancy or Harringrove. Steddie is the only one that really appeals to me personally. (it’s fine if you do ship one of those though!! more power to ya!!)

Or like with Max. I can go down the Elmax route, or I can go down the Lucas x Max route and in that case I make El some form of aro/ace. But I can’t ship El with Mike.

It’s just something that I thought of recently is that it’s so funny how my brain accepts some ships but not others, like where the line is drawn at the flexibility of the matter.

You're allowed to turn them trans, you're allowed to have them in poly relationships. Into Herongraystrairs but want to write about Will becoming a woman? Totally fine! Ron x Hermione x Harry? Cool, go for it.

It's your imagination! Write that fantasy gay slash AU, draw that trans character fan art - it's all up to you!

But.

That goes both ways.

So if someone really likes the thought of, let's say, Steve and Robin together, we can't go ahead and throw stones because Robin is canonically gay. She is, of course she is! Just like Steve is canonically straight and overly in love with stupid Nancy - doesn't mean Steddie fanfics are any less cute, right?

It's just fan work. It's for fun. It's for living out your fantasies. And that includes writing characters that are gay in a straight ship and vice versa.

Billy has always had his fair share of inappropriate crushes.

An older gentleman passing through from Los Angeles, random tourists at the beach with heavy accents and eyes that he’d have liked to pick apart. One client at the auto shop he used to work at whose AC relay he had to fix, and who returned time and time again to buy coolant. Crushes that he knew were never going to happen, and that he never cared enough about to try. There were hot guys all over San Diego, though few ever truly caught his eye.

Even fewer were a part of his daily routine.

“Max, get the hell up, or you’re walking!”

“Hold on, asshole!”

Billy didn’t mind driving her around, really, but it was only September, and he thought he would lose all of his hair before May. A month since Max hit high school was a month where the pseudo-dad charade was amped up to one-hundred, and he was in for one hell of a ride until she graduated.

It was coming up on one year since it had just been the two of them. Working two jobs since he was fifteen and hiding the money from his dad was the only reason Billy had been able to afford his own place at all, let alone be deemed fit to take over as Max’s legal guardian. He was twenty-four with a clean, safe apartment and steady income, and despite ceaseless arguing that they hadn’t quite gotten over yet, Max was on his side. She would have been no matter what.

“I’m leaving!”

“Jesus Christ, Billy—“

She was still brushing her teeth by the time he revved up the car, worked the engine a few times for dramatics, and grimaced when she spit into the grass. “You are so fucking gross, Max,” he said when she got into the passenger’s seat, idly spinning the wheel of her skateboard.

“Says the guy with cigarette breath.”

Billy laughed; he couldn’t argue there.

Between the radio and forgettable chatter, rides to school were far too loud for eight in the morning, but that was their thing. It was so different from how things used to be, they didn’t care. They liked it that way. Just an obnoxious guy and his more obnoxious step-sister having the time of their lives before something went wrong again, but that would be later’s problem.

Right now, Billy’s problem was pulling up to Sunny Oaks High School without giving himself away by sticking around so Mister Harrington, Max’s biology teacher, could wave hello. It happened once on the first Thursday—maybe he’d recognized Billy from the tour—and the flip in Billy’s stomach was familiar and far too strong. Mister Harrington was one handsome fellow indeed: tall and lean with the most gorgeous brown hair Billy had ever seen. It made his heart race and his face heat up, but that was something he just couldn’t fucking afford, so he got into the habit of letting his tires screech before the door even closed all the way.

It was a crush. One of those based purely on appearances, because he had yet to speak to Mister Harrington. He only heard from Max how much fun he was, that he explained things well and never gave pop quizzes. Apparently he was funny too, which definitely didn’t add to Billy’s narrow image of him in the slightest. Billy didn’t think about him telling some stupid taxonomy joke and laughing while the class watched with confused frowns, or chuckling to himself while grading papers when he came across a particularly wrong answer.

Billy would be over it by the next week.

Okay, by the next month.

Okay, after parent-teacher conferences, because then he would actually speak to Mister Harrington and learn of all the reasons why he was unattractive.

It should have been easy to wait outside the classroom by himself, reading a book to avoid the real parents with spouses and other kids and respectable jobs. It should have been easy to smile, introduce himself, shake a hand with the same charm he’d used since puberty started working in his favor, but Mister Harrington—damn him—made it so much harder. Up close, Billy noticed the moles dotting his cheek and chin and neck and arms—and, god, it was impossible.
