The Impact of Academic Advising on Student Success
Introduction
In the pursuit of higher education, students often encounter various challenges, ranging from academic difficulties to personal struggles. Academic advising stands as a beacon of support, guiding students through their academic journey and empowering them to overcome obstacles along the way.
Navigating Academic Pathways
One of the primary roles of academic advising is to assist students in navigating the complex landscape of academic pathways. From choosing majors to selecting courses, advisors offer invaluable insights and recommendations, helping students make informed decisions aligned with their interests and goals.
Fostering Personal Growth
Beyond academic planning, academic advising fosters holistic personal growth. Advisors serve as mentors, providing guidance on time management, study skills, and stress management techniques. By addressing both academic and non-academic challenges, advisors empower students to develop resilience and thrive in their educational pursuits.
Building Meaningful Relationships
Central to effective Academic advising is the cultivation of meaningful relationships between advisors and students. Through regular interactions and open communication, advisors gain a deeper understanding of students' aspirations, strengths, and challenges, enabling them to provide personalized guidance and support.
Leveraging Executive Functioning Tests
To enhance the effectiveness of academic advising, many institutions incorporate executive functioning test into their advising practices. These assessments evaluate students' cognitive abilities and identify areas for improvement, enabling advisors to tailor their guidance and interventions to meet individual needs effectively.
Promoting Student Success
At its core, the goal of academic advising is to promote student success. By providing comprehensive support, addressing academic and personal needs, and leveraging tools like executive functioning tests, advisors play a crucial role in empowering students to achieve their academic goals and fulfill their potential.
Conclusion
As students navigate the complexities of higher education, the role of academic advising becomes increasingly vital. By providing guidance, fostering personal growth, and leveraging innovative tools like executive functioning tests, advisors contribute significantly to student success, ensuring that every student receives the support they need to thrive academically and beyond.

The university where I work shortens Comparative Literature to C LIT.
A couple years ago I had a student in my office say “I need help finding a clit course” before realizing what she’d said. Her eyes went wide and she immediately said “I am SO sorry!”
I assured her it was fine and funny, while I worked so hard to not make an inappropriate joke.
petition to shorten "classic literature" to "clit"

Hello! I hope you have a great day, and that I'm not bothering you! But, I was wondering, How would Lyman Banner fit into the college AU? And In general, What do you think of him?
Aw, thanks!!! I hope you have a good day too :^) It's never a bother to chatter about my many AUs, hehehehe
Professor Banner is a bit of a weird case in College AU (i guess to be fair he's a weird case in canon too lol); he WAS Jaden's academic advisor for his freshman and sophomore year, and they had a sort of odd friendship; Jaden even got to catsit Pharaoh a couple times (based off my true life experience of my old roommate who once dogsat our art history professor's shelties.) But then like midway into Jaden's junior year Banner fucking DIED unexpectedly, and now the effects of his presence still linger around Jaden like a ghost. Her and ended up leaving Jay a bunch of academic books on alchemy and art that are still sitting somewhere in his bedroom (Yubel likes thumbing through them.) He also got the cat :) (Though Jaden's been a bit dodgy about whether or not he was Ieft Pharaoh in some sort of will along with the books, of if he just stole Pharaoh so he wouldn't get surrendered to the pound. Either way!)
Lyman Banner is like.... for me he's one of those yugioh characters that for whatever reason doesn't quite scratch my brain the way most others do, but I DO think he's got some fun stuff going on with him. Amnael is cool, I like his design elements more in that state, and in general Banner's just such an Absolute Fucking Bonkers Character i have to respect it. Like you get hit the Yugioh Homunculus lore and then you just keep getting kicked in the head with more insane details about him. He talks like a catboy. He really straight up died and his cat ate his ghost and now he haunts a teenager and that's just part of Jaden's life now I guess??!??!?! I wish he didnt Sound Like That in the dub. "Lyman" is one of the most yugioh dub name choices of all time. He needs to lose his teaching license real real bad.
I've never actually drawn him before! So this was a nice chance to take a crack at him since now I'm thinkin about him :^) He has what I like to call "Dartz bangs" which is one of my favorite ygo character design traits, so that's a treat to draw <3
#ygo posting#asks#ty for the ask!! tl;dr banner was around and then he Wasnt but his absence is felt#jaden could really use some academic advising right about now 🥴#jaden yuki#judai yuki#ygo spinoff college au#lyman banner#daitokuji gx#ygoart#dana art#hexmaniac28

im in such a weird situation with uni work at the minute because im working on my dissertation research proposal about trans people and climate justice for a research methods module and i like. i need to know if the lecturer for this module is transphobic or not? she's an older lady and she's said stuff in class along the lines of "well back in my day we didn't have all these different genders" and stuff so im just. on edge and i don't really know what to do about it because i can't exactly email her like hi are you transphobic or just ignorant but not knowing how much i need to defend trans peoples right to exist in this assignment is very stressful lmao
#rowanposting#ive addressed the sports shit and trans kids shit in there too and im rlly worried that thats gonna be the thing that gets her#because its pretty common i think for ppl here to broadly not give a shit about trans people but to have heard abt those issues on the news#the answer might just be 'you gotta wait and see and be alert for issues after submission' but i dont want to miss doing something that#could ease the situation#people who are better at navigating academic structures than me pls advise...#environment#rowan vs university

rumors of my disappearance into the void are probably true and can be substantiated but like sisyphus and his rock, i attempt to roll myself back up this hill and get active on tumblr again
anyways hi, i'm... here
i think.
life is lifin'! work suck(ed) and now i've left the legal field for the foreseeable future to enter academia. wish me luck as i start figuring out if i like teaching, consider the merits of getting a second doctorate, and attempt to survive the inherent disapproval that comes from not doing what my parents wanted me to do with my life
#personal#i think i'm alive anyway#i feel way better in academic advising than i do in legal practice so we'll see what happens#lawyer in theory since i still pay out the nose for that license

Me, explaining my work to my advisor:
So I did all these calculations, and here's the model I came up with.
Advisor: Interesting. Now, show me why this doesn't contradict every law of physics known to man.

I just applied for a job at the university I just graduated from and I don't have all of the experience needed according to the description but I feel like it's really similar to my last internship and like I would be good at it. It's not exactly was I was hoping for after graduation but I do think it would be great if I get it. I'm gonna ask some people I know at the uni to see if they know anyone in the department

Never ended up adding this, but:
I don’t believe DM ‘woobified’ Thomas Cromwell, but I see some sort of marriage of narrative in his own biographical apologism & the depiction in Mantel’s series and its adaptation that filed off some his sharper, less palatable, edges, including the TV adaptation (if not literal marriage, then certainly a feature now of this sort of Cromwell-focused subgenre/...fandom?). It’s Cromwell holding a kitten that we see, not Cromwell introducing a bill for the utter abolition of sanctuaries, Cromwell gently scolding an imperious Anne who insists Thomas More should be tortured ( ‘we don’t do that, madame’), rather than Cromwell as the orchestrator of the rather torturous executions of John and Alice Wolfe. In so many of these scenes, the characters opposite Cromwell feel like strawmen-- an irony, from an author that so often derided that infamous author of so many strawmen arguments where he came out the moral and intellectual victor, himself...
I also don’t think the criticism of misogyny as it concerns AB’s character in this series, the original source material nor the adapted TV series, is proportional to how eye-watering it was (dismissed because she’s so auxiliary, maybe...?). There is literally a scene where Anne tries to facilitate the seduction (and probable rape) of a teenage girl (presumably inspired by a dispatch of Chapuys in which he does not even report that there’s any rumor of this plot, just that he believes she might do so, that it is the goal and potential method of the isolation), as Cromwell stands on in silent, long-suffering, morally reproving judgement (which emerges as a pattern, another scene later or before is him being the calming voice of reason as she squawks in outrage at the wording of the Act of Succession). Paired with the absolute Mary Sue gender-equivalent of this character (in TMATL, even his own daughter-in-law wants to fuck him), it’s just nauseating.
#his praise of mantel's work validated it in some ways#particularly in academic circles to the point she was invited on a panel of historians for a documentary about AB#so...#yeah. idk. i don't think there's anything wrong with depicting moments of vulnerability; either#but where's it afforded to any others in the text?#SA tw#*vulnerability and humanity#the book as well ......there's way too much 'oh but that was period-accurate misogyny'#of course there was 16c misogyny but part of critique is questioning the narrative necessity of the scenes that feature that#what was the narrative necessity of cromwell imagining himself stroking her breasts in the TV adaptation?#or the duke of suffolk in the book saying he knows for a fact she practiced oral sex on dildos in france? like.................#mantel's 'AB was not a victim' manifested into material that implied at almost every narrative turn that every misogynistic narrative#about her that existed from the time of contemporary report to polemics during her daugher's reign#was justified and reasonable#cromwell doesn't think very highly of suffolk and obviously neither does mantel but the implication of the scene isn't that that's not true#but that he just can't say it.#*shouldn't say it rather#since cromwell just advises him that her becoming queen is inevitable

hm thinking about how my academic adviser really said “if you struggle with doing things right now for yourself, just think about how much future you will appreciate it later” and bro has that changed my mind on a lot of things but also the way i want to scream doing things that i don’t wanna do right now but fine fine fine
#caroline talks#it's the whole. 'i'm okay with letting myself down i just don't wanna let others down :(' mentality huh#my academic adviser being like 'you should consider your future self or your child self as someone you don't want to let down'#and i'm like 'oh worm okay'#which is what i'm trying to do#so right now i am going to go to my goshdarn torts class#even though i haven't done the readings lmao#but it's probably better to just show up and try to absorb the class#rather than sit in my room and waste time

‘all my problems would be fixed if i had somebody to love.’ well as much as i believe that love is the answer, ENDEAVOUR TO LIVE MORE LOVINGLY AND PEOPLE WILL FLOCK TO YOU WITH LOVE SITTING WARM IN THE PALM OF THEIR HAND!
#i think i pin a lot of my hope for a better life on singular 'fixable' issues. such as having a romantic partner or losing#weight or academic success.#and i've come to the conclusion that if i put more effort into making things better for me personally (and for no one else) then love will#gravitate to me regardless. not in the more superficial sense that i was hinging my optimism on#but more in the sense of putting greater intention into my mental and physical health#and into my relationships with close friends and family#and generally (as i was recently advised) not just letting life happen to me.#i think taking charge of my life and attempting to influence it's direction to a place that makes me personally happier will naturally#attract more love along the way.#<3
