#about queer identity?

Now that I'm on this, I think one of the big problems I have with just going, "It's queer!" about a piece of media is that it's always, "there is a queer character in a (usually same-gender) romantic relationship" and not "this queer character exists in a major story capacity and is allowed a lot of interesting narrative choices." The implication is usually that what makes a piece of media queer is "a specific kind of romantic relationship" and not "the presence of canonically queer characters."
#like would people be calling [redacted] queer media if it didn't center around a romantic relationship and was about two queer people#separately living their lives who don't ever enter into a romantic relationship?#do you remember the shit the half of it got for not having the two female leads end up together despite VERY MUCH being a queer movie?#about queer identity?#like there is STILL this idea that your queerness is contingent on what kind of relationship you're in and. NO.#okay. I'm done.

So, just curious how many writers and creators will have to be forcibly outed by relentless harassment before we acknowledge that "This queer characters was written by a cishet person and that's why they're bad" is not good criticism.
#yes i'm just going to come out and say it i'm talking about sera#not exclusively but i am talking about her#'but her writer actually iS A--' you don't know that! it doesn't matter! and i don't care!#just say that you do not like the character.#people will reblog posts about the latest actor or YA author or whatever getting forced out of the closet and be like#'wow. :( that's terrible.'#and then GO RIGHT BACK TO DOING IT#when are we going to learn#when are we going to stop doing this BEFORE somebody is forcibly outed#because in practical terms#that means you have to be okay with queer characters being written by straight people.#you have to stop weaponizing that against writers you don't like.#you have to be willing to critique the writing on its own merits#without using the writer's (assumed) identity to prop up your arguments#that's how it works#but who wants to actually change the way they talk about media#when tearing apart people's identities for clout is far more entertaining.#gwaren exports#fandom problems#fandom critical

I’m curious - people always seem surprised that multiple siblings are queer, as if it’s amazing the gay lightning struck twice so close together.
But human variation is down to our genes and external factors. Siblings are logically more likely to both/all be queer than not.
So a wee poll if you don’t mind!
Anyone can take part, there should be an option for anyone but please let me know in notes if I missed anyone.
For reference: queer is anyone who wouldn’t describe themselves as heterosexual or cis-gendered or allo-sexual. Anyone we would include in the queer group. And if you’re not including people by their own identification, we can have words after…
Notes:
If you only have one sibling use the relevant all option.
If you have an issue with the word queer I truly don’t want to hear about it - that’s your choice, this is mine.
Reblog if you fancy! If you don’t then no worries, but if you can it would be nice to get a lot of replies!
And hey everyone, happy Pride!
#queer stuff#lgbtq+#queer#polls#asexual#and#aromantic#people - I want to hear from you too! You are valid and queer if you id as queer#if you don’t know about your identity or you don’t know about your siblings identity - first off; sending you love.#second; if you want to take part just put what you think is most likely or your most comfortable putting#❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Happy Pride! Now that Lunar Boy (our middle grade graphic novel) is out, we wanted to share our thought process behind queer vocabulary in media. The constant censorship, imposed western biases on queer culture, and what it means to introduce queer vocabulary to a young audience.
Check out Lunar Boy wherever american graphic novels are sold, or check it out at a library!
#pride month#pride#queer#trans#lgbt books#qpoc#queer books#lunar boy#graphic novel#my art#longish post#just in case it needs to be said: of course it's okay not to identify with “queer” for any personal reason! but in talking about media rep#it's important to discuss the potential biases that could be imposed if we reject queer vocab all together#and the limitations the lgbtqia acronym has in encompassing identities outside of a western framework

So glad to have the language of "identity determinism" now, because it negatively influences trans spaces so heavily. It's where we see narratives like "being a trans man means you were afab, you were raised to be feminine, you want to transition to look like a cis man, and you have male privilege." Sure, that describes a lot of trans men. But gender and identity are complicated. People can be intersex, be raised in an unusual environment, be gnc, be non-passing, etc. Your identity does not determine everything you've been through or how others, especially bigots, perceive and treat you, and believing it does causes a lot of harm. Leave it up to the person to tell you what their experiences are; you cannot simply assume it from their identity.
#need folks to remember words like 'generally'/'often'/'usually'/'commonly'/'typically' when talking about trans & queer experiences#transandrophobia#transfeminism#identity determinism#mine

The urge to put The Guy in creepy Pinterest bathrooms is real… and I have no self control
#Tim is one of those characters where I think he could be trans in any direction and it would thematically make sense#and it’s fun to see what the fandom does with that#so this was inspired by all the trans fem tim stuff I’ve been seeing#(think the biggest inspo was this one fix by misspickman?)#but it could definitely be read as just him in a dress if you’d like!!#im still insane ab secret identities and being queer btw#I’m still thinking about that#my art#tim drake#dc

ultimately when it comes to shipping and fandom space treatment of aspec characters i just don't accept "aro/ace people can still date/have sex" as an answer from nonaspecs. like yeah. mhm. okay. now i think we both know that you're not saying that out of real interest in the diversity of aspec experiences. so you can turn in your seventeen-page essay on why and how you plan to examine this character's aspec identity within the context of a romantic or sexual relationship complete with evidence from canon and peer reviews from multiple aspec people within the next week or i'm putting you in the pit from the edgar allen poe story
#you know. the one with the pendulum#'hey. why are you as an allo person shipping this aspec character like this'#'oh aspec people can still date/have sex!'#'yeah. now can you answer the question that i actually asked you'#like goddamn just say you don't care they're aspec and you want to fulfill a sexual/romantic fantasy with them. that's Fine#it like. sucks. for sure. lotta aspec people will be unhappy with you. but everyone is entitled to their own wants and experiences.#but i'd prefer you just be honest with it rather than using our community's conversation points as retroactive justification#and ONCE AGAIN. you guys are real fucking cavalier with this shit and it shows a real fundamental lack of respect for aspecs#when most of you would NEVER ship a canonically gay character with the 'other' gender. cause again. it would suck.#you can do it. nobody's Stopping you. but it would suck.#and we understand that putting a queer character in situations that erase that queerness is shitty! until it comes to aspec characters!#and whoa... there it is again... people don't consider aspec identities to be queer... crazy how it always comes back to that#anyway. you all know what i'm talking about. have seen many posts about this lately#it is [ long sigh ] unfortunately a very hot button issue with the advent lately of alastor hazbinhotel#which. again. god i wish there were other canon aspec characters to be having this conversation about.#but we'll have to do our best with what we have#aromantic#aromanticism#arospec#aroace#talking#aspec#asexual#asexuality

When I was 19 in the mid-90s the internet was not a readily available thing to explore your curiosities about sex, so I used to phone up a sex line and make an account, leave a message in a boy voice, and see what kinds of propositions older men would leave in my mailbox. Your aunties did their gender identity research in their own ways

It's been said before, it will be said again, but it's still worth saying: the fact that art centering on straight romance is allowed to just be bad, but art with queer romance in it always has to be indicative of A Serious Problem With the Way We Tell Queer Stories makes being a queer person making queer art deeply stressful
#just saw smthing about red white and royal blue#and like i never watched/read that one so maybe everything ppl say about it is true#and i never watched heartbreaker or love simon so maybe those ones are also genuinely a sign of a serious problem#but idk. the fact that this happens every damn time makes me think that maybe queer stories are being held to different standards#and it's exhausting writing stuff while having a chorus of voices in the back of my head saying i'm misrepresenting my own identities and#making the whole community look bad by writing mediorcre romance#and knowing that even though i'm neither straight nor a girl there WILL be ppl calling me a straight girl fetishizing queer relationships#lgbt#queer community#writer stuff#idk what else to tag this#asexual#bisexual#nonbinary#venttag

NO MORE ASSOCIATING THINGS WITH FEMMES ONLY BECAUSE THEY ARE PINK!HYPERFEM FEMMES ARE GREAT AND I LOVE YOU CAMPY FEMMES WHO EMBODY PINK BUT ALSO JESUS CHRIST CAN YOU GUYS NOT GO MORE THAN ONE DAY W/O TRYING TO SHOEHORN FEMMES INTO BEING ONLY PINK UWU BABIES. I AM FEMME AS IN GRASS AS IN DIRT AS IN TREE BARK AS IN WEEDS SPROUTING THROUGH THE SIDEWALK CEMENT. FEMME AS IN GENDER NONCONFORMITY AS IN FUCK YOU MY FEMININITY IS WHAT *I* SAY IT IS. FEMME AS IN DEPTH AND DARKNESS AND WARMTH AND TERROR. FEMME AS IN CAVES. FEMME AS IN LIGHTNING. FEMME AS IN AN AMALGAMATION OF TRAITS THAT I HAVE DECIDED ARE FEMININE REGARDLESS OF WHAT SOCIETY SAYS. FUCK IS IT THAT HARD TO UNDERSTAND?!???
#personal#i am emotional yes#over the years ive had this blog I've made a few posts abt being femme#nd whether they're serious or jokey..... inevitably someone in the tags goes “ohhh yeah bc pink”#or in the case of what inspired this post: someone going “what about the pink ones” on my praying mantis post#and im just.#sick of it. im sick of femme being equated to pink and frilly girlie behaviors.#im sick of femme being equated to skirts and heels. to makeup. to skincare. to pristine nails exactly almond shaped.#im sick of ppl acting like All femmes aspire to this shit. im sick of femms being reduced to this shit.#and i love pink! i love pink! my phone theme is quite literally just black and pink all over.#im just. so tired of any expression of Femme identity being shoehorned into being a Specific type of femininity#especially as someone who DOES get dysphoric wearing skirts. wearing dresses. embodying the femme aesthetic yall are so set on making#if u guys wanna rb this i truly dont care#i just needed to scream#and this is one small thing#but the 2nd largest category of anon hate i have gotten since making this blog is str8 up homophobia from other “queer” folks#saying i cant be femme bc of how i present. calling me slurs (and using them as such) bc they cant understand femme as anything but that#my wife and i have our users in our personal discord server set as 2 different things of anon hate ive gotten#i have had OTHER FEMMES tell me i am not femme. femmes who Know im femme who still call me butch. femmes who ive corrected and been blocked#-by bc of it. the number 1 largest demographic of queerfolk who have me blocked rn is TME femmes who embody pink also#and i dont think its a coincidence at all. (and i know this bc i go to try and follow these ppl bc they get rbed on my dash & i cant)#and ik their blogs arent deleted bc some of them don't block my wife (tall. white. butch) and it cant be politics cause her and i rb#a lot of the same political shit (fuck. i think she rbs More than i do even. this is genuinely mainly a nsft blog)#and usually i don't say anything but im having a bad day so i get to be angry about this and if anyone fucking tries me i will block u#idc if we've been mutuals 4ever. im judt so tired of feeling like i am not Enough as a femme bc i dont embody this shit#im sick of this lameass lip service to he/him gnc femmes etc when the thin white 50s housewife femme is still what is preferred and loved#im sick of this lamesss lip service when y'all feel entitled to theorizing on other femmes genders bc u cant conceptualize a femme who does#wanna be hypetfeminine. im sick of it. im sick of it. im sick of it.#celebrity bun

Thinking about how Riz is the one who first used he/him pronouns for Baron & what it's like being AroAce is a queer space. Thinking about Riz seeing the kinship that Raugh and Kristen formed over both being gay and wanting that connection, that sense of community, but holding himself back because while he wasn't "normal" he also wasn't like them. When you're gay you're family and when you're straight you fit in but what happens when you're neither? How do you categorize that.
Riz isn't afraid of his orientation because he's different by societal standards. It's not being queer that scares him no, it's the isolation of not knowing if anyone else feels the way he does. He knows that if he were gay or bi or pan his friends would understand, he'd be like them and be surrounded by people like him. But he's not like them, he is different in a way that seems entirely unique to himself.
So maybe he kind of wished he was gay, and that Baron existed because that was what he was afraid to admit. It'd be a lot less lonely than the truth.
#riz gukgak#Fantasy High#Fantasy High Junior Year#Dimension 20#D20#baron from the baronies#It's like the experience of knowing someone accepts queer folks but not knowing if they accept how you're queer#Tho I don't think Riz fears not being accepted as much as he fears not being understood#He realizes the second he admits he's AroAce he admits there's something entirely different about him than his friends#And he just wants to belong to a group for the first time in his life#To the point that his identity as part of this group is prioritized over his personal identity

Saw a post that made me furious yesterday so if people STILL don't understand this:
Aspec people are queer.
And no, it's not our love that makes us queer, it's our LACK of certain types of love that make us queer.
There is of course aspec people who are queer both because of their love and their lack of love, but being aspec is queer because of the lack of love.
Saying "but aspecs love too! Their love is also important! Aro and ace people have love and their love is also important!" is not the support you think it is for a lot of aspec people.
My love for my mother isn't what makes me queer. My love for my friends isn't what makes me queer. It's my lack or romantic love that makes me queer. Yea love is important to me, especially platonic love, but that is not what makes me queer.
And let's not forget about loveless aros.
For the love of god stop going "but aros love too!" just so you can relate to us somehow or just so you can include us. We don't need love to be included.
And because some people are going to take this as a personal attack: no, there is nothing wrong with being gay. There is nothing wrong with love is love. Love is important to a lot of people and I am not saying love is bad.
Happy pride everyone
#stiff talk#sorry the post pissed me off SO MUCH#i wanted to argue wjth the op bht i just blocked them#i did not have the strength to argue#aromantic#asexual#aspec#aroace#sincerely: someone who is tired of seeing others try to constantly bring love into queer identities who are about the lack of love.#also please note i will not be arguing wjth any exclusionists#if you say shit on this post youre getting blocked i dont need go argue with someone whos not here to listen but to be hateful

BBC Merlin being about 'magic' for 7 minutes gay
#not to be all autistic about media analysis again but i think fandom tends to overlook the symbolic/metaphorical aspect of queer subtext#a show can be queer coded because two same sex characters have an intense relationship with homoerotic undertones#or it can be queer coded because it conveys themes of alienation. repressed identity. oppression. internalised shame#Merlin does both. several times over#gay ass wizard show#bbc merlin#merlin#merthur#magic is gay#magic as a metaphor#flashing#flashing lights#< thanks to photosensitive-despair for advising me to change the tags

*Referring to bi/pan/mspec lesbians and gays, transmasc lesbians, transfem gays, etc.
Keep it civil in the comments/reblogs. This blog aims to be an inclusive space for queer people of all kinds. This poll is a general survey, not a platform for discourse and not an invitation to air your personal grievances with how people identify.

dear lesboy (and tbh any other nuanced identity) exclusionists who think your vein of thought is the majority in queer spaces id like to inform you that today at lunch with my (entirely queer) friend group the topic drifted to me being a butch lesbian and one friend goes "wait i thought you were a guy?" and i said "i am" and another friend interjected "dudes can be lesbians too" and that was that. no further probing about my identity, nohing about how im "invalidating transmen and lesbians", or whatever. everyone just accepted that thats how i identify and i dont owe an explanation for it and moved on. i promise u its not that deep 👍
#i love both of those friends dearly#doinkus.txt#mogai#lgbtq#liom#transmasc#lesboy#boydyke#male lesbian#bi lesbian#mspec lesbian#pro good faith#rad inclus#radical inclusion#queer#trans#obligatory disclaimer that i am not *just* a boydyke i am also a girlfag thanks <3#wasnt relevant to the post tho because only but butch-boy-dyke identity was brought up in the convo#i have said to them b4 that im gaybian though amd again no one was upset about it lmaoo
