5 years ago today my friend died.

He overdosed on heroine that was cut with fentanyl. We didn’t know he’d been doing heroine. It turns out he wasn’t being super responsible about anything in his life, but we didn’t know how far it had gotten.

He was really funny. He was really kind. He was an absolute horror show in the kitchen. A walking, talking, dancing salmonella hazard who cooked sardines and pickled banana peppers into his burgers.

He was generous with his time and his friendship. He loved music, and technology. He loved people, and introducing people he thought should be friends to each other. I met a whole bunch of people I love because of him.

I have a box of his things in my closet that five years later I don’t really know how to look at.

Five years feels both like a long time and not very long at all.

He used to jokingly call me “Ler.”

“Lerrrrrr.” Or “Leighface.”

We were friends for 18 years. We used to have facebook messenger conversations every day. Sometimes they’d just consist of nonsense.

Hoop.

Shoop shoop.

Doop doop doop.

It was just nice to know that while we were working long hours, there was someone who would answer.

Once when my dad wrote me a really horrible email, he offered to read it first and let me know how bad it was. It made it less awful knowing I wasn’t the first or only one seeing those terrible words.

One time we shared a sushi boat and it was glorious. He ate the white tuna even though I told him it would give him the shits. He did not care.

We used to walk around the park and take photos. We used to go find little corner Mexican food places that served delicious tacos or little pho places with big, savory bowls of noodly soup.

I miss the hell out of him. I hope wherever he is, he’s doing a dumb little dance.

We’re going through this phase of fandom right now where people willfully ignore the sexist implications of female characters being shafted into housewife/mother roles or disempowered by the end of their stories. If you dare to criticize such writing decisions, you will be accused of sexism and be hounded for not “respecting their choices” as though these characters are actual people and not tools of storytelling. As if the cliche of female characters “sacrificing” their powers or having them stripped away exists in a vacuum and isn’t influenced by any larger cultural factors.

They’ll say: “Not every character has to be a girlboss!!” Or “Let women be soft and traditional!!” As if that’s some revolutionary way of thinking and not the norm. It’s an extension of choice feminism, dismissing any dissent about the quality of the narrative to make it make sense and avoid the uncomfortable truth. Diminishing the agency of female characters and cramming them into traditional roles is a common occurrence in many stories, and we should be allowed to criticize them without being silenced.

Just thinking about how when Nina was taken captive by Drüskelle not only was it obviously awful but it was also probably acting on something that Nina already struggled with because she was held captive by the Darkling on a skiff when she was 14/15 with the other Grisha students who were evacuated to Keramzin and I don’t think that being held captive belowdecks of a ship and a skiff would feel all that different

i feel like we don’t talk enough about that one moment in crooked kingdom where wylan asks jesper if being a criminal is really what he wants for his future and jesper says yes but then he reaches out to untangle wylan’s satchel and says “but it’s not all that i want.”
