Since y’all liked the post about John Marston’s daughter being born prematurely, here’s my fav theory,
What if the Marston daughter was just autistic? Maybe she had Tourette’s?
It strays off the average ‘sick and died’ or ‘infant death theory’s’. During that time if you acted odd you would be scrutinized, isolated, and even killed.
So now John gets to watch as his heart, his daughter, grow to hate the ranch and life he worked so hard for due to being stuck there. He had to watch her become restless as she was hidden away, retaliating in ways that harmed both parties.
Jack had to listen to his friends poke fun at his baby sister and slowly began reciprocate that anger, even if deep down he didn’t care if his sister whistled when he tried to read or talk to his friends when they visited. Abigail tries her best to bond with her, to be the soft one she needs, but the girl got all the worst parts of John. She was his daughter, as Jack is her own son.
And what happens when he finally gives up? When it becomes too much? Dragging her in an itchy dress to a church picnic was hard enough, but it was worth it to see her socialize. Not rot.
But when a volunteer nun pulls her aside, berating that his perfect daughter was possessed, that she needed to be fixed…he wasn’t around to hear the first slam over the head.
Blunt force is one hell of a thing. Especially when over the head with a 21 lb Bible.
That flawed daughter, his second chance, had no hope. She survived a day at most, getting to die in her home, though labeled completely incompetent with her state. Trying to make her normal was her downfall. While her dad goes down in history, she died living completely and utterly alone due to factors she couldn’t control.

November 19th 1600 saw the birth of King Charles I at Dunfermline Palace.
No-one knew that Charles would be the last of the Stewart king s to be born in Scotland. He had an elder brother who was destined to be king and Charles was a frail, sickly child.
Three years after the birth of Charles, his father, King James VI, became King of England also and his elder brother Henry, became Prince of Wales - an English title created by Edward I. Prince Henry died in 1612 and suddenly Charles became the heir apparent. But he was soon under the malign influence of the Duke of Buckingham, eight years older than Charles, who had been made a favourite of King James alledgedly, on the basis of his foppish good looks.
In 1623, in pursuit of King James' plan to create an alliance with Spain, Buckingham accompanied Charles to the Iberian peninsula to arrange the marriage of the King of Spain's daughter to Charles. The plan was badly bungled (Buckingam gets the blame) and war was declared between Britain and Spain shortly after their return!
As lord high admiral, Buckingham continued to mismanage various expeditions and was eventually murdered in 1628.
King James died on March 27th 1625 and Charles was crowned at Westminster Abbey on February 2md the following year, With an alliance with Spain now abandoned, a French one was pursued instead, this time with a bit more success, and King Charles married Henrietta Maria, the sister of King Louis XIII.
His wife had an even more exaggerated view than Charles of the "Divine Right of Kings" which led him into conflict with Parliament both in Westminster and Scotland. Charles fell foul of the "puritans" favouring a church more in line with Catholicism, a "high" church with richness and ceremony.
He also fell out with the English parliament over him raising taxes without their permission, so what is man who believes in that "Divine Right of Kings" do? Dissolves Parliament and rules the country himself for 11 years.
Charles eventually came to Scotland in 1633 to be crowned at Holyrood. Although the Union of the Crowns had taken place in 1603, the monarch ruled two separate countries, each with their own laws - and church. In Scotland the meddling of the king in church affairs led to the signing of the National Covenant in 1638 and a call to arms.
The English Parliament and the Scottish Presbyterians were now both at loggerheads with the king and civil war broke out in 1642. In Scotland, the Marquis of Montrose carried out a brilliant campaign on behalf of the King. But in England, the battle between the Royalists and the Roundheads (led by Oliver Cromwell) swung back and forwards. But with defeats at Marston Moor in 1644 and Naseby in June 1645, his cause was all but lost in England. Charles surrendered to a Scottish army in 1646. He tried to sew dissension between the Scots and the English Parliaments but he was eventually handed over to the English Parliament.
Charles continued to attempt to "negotiate" but following an attempt to escape to France, rebellions in Wales and the south-east of England and an invasion of England by the Scots in 1648, convinced the English Parliament that Charles should be tried for treason. Charles argued (with some justification) that the court was illegal but he was sentenced to death and beheaded on January 30th 1649.
Despite his many failings, his refusal to compromise and save himself by accepting Presbyterianism, the illegal nature of his "trial" and his dignity at his execution, have all retrospectively provided Charles with a halo of martyrdom.
If nothing more, Charles did provide us with some fantastic portraits of himself, and if he was around nowadays I am sure he would love a wee selfie to himself! I particularly like the first one by van Dyck, the large Royal coat of arms of the House of Stuart stands to the lower left of the painting it measures a massive 3.68 × 2.7 metres. The second is another van Dyck, Charles I at the Hunt the third is by Gerrit van Honthorst another Dutch painter. The National Portrait Gallery, London say, on their web site Charles is associated with 335 portraits.

OFCIR scrapped scene
@evabluepark888 @maryonaccross @gwenllian-in-the-abbey
Just so you know we write. I'm just mostly scrapping the scenes, because they don't fit the overall narrative flow. But this is cute and you guys love the grumkin, so, here you go:
The very same chaos that had settled in his chambers was to be found in the children’s room as well. As soon as he was wheeled in by Ser Marston, he was welcomed by a loud bang. Jaehaera, who had always loathed baths, was being chased by a harried nurse, almost nude but for the thinnest shirt covering her knees. From behind the painted screen, Aegon caught a glimpse of Gaemon who was happily splashing in the bathtub. On the bench sat Aeg, prim, proper and wide-eyed at the scene of the wild pursuit, while another nurse combed back his wet hair. Jaehaera crawled under her bed, only her bare little feet peeking out from under the wooden frame.
The nurses stopped in their tracks, bowing deeply. Aegon waved them away with a grin.
“Grumkin, what the hell do you think you’re doing?”
“No baths!”
“I’m afraid that’s not negotiable, sweetling.” He wheeled himself towards the bed. He couldn’t resist reaching to the dirty little foot, tickling the sole.
“PAPA!” A thud. “Ouch!”
“Get out, Jae. I need to talk with all three of you.”
A while later, the children were gathered around Gaemon’s bathtub. The little boy giggled at the commotion around. Jaehaera, covered with dust head to toe, pouted, her cheeks puffed, as the nurse wrapped a dressing robe around her narrow shoulders. Aeg shot him a concerned look, the same anxious tick of the brow Jaehaerys used to do.
“Children,” he said, and it surprised him how weary and raspy his own voice sounded. “First, Jae. I know you hate bathing, but since you have kindly wiped the floor with your own body, it has become a necessity. It’s either a proper bath or the nurse rubs you clean with a rough washcloth. It’s your choice.”
Jae frowned, crossing her thin arms over her chest. Neither of her options was her particular favourite but Aegon had long since realized that Jae’s sensitivities did not bother her so much when she was put in charge.
“The bath,” she grumbled. “But I do it myself!”
“Thank you,” he smiled. When he turned to his son’s moon-round face, guilt settled heavily in his gut. Damn Lord Corlys, damn his demands, and damn Mother’s too-reasonable arguments. And yet, he had to pay the lip service to propriety for the lords of the realm to take his promise to Baela seriously. It mattered not that the young woman adored Gaemon; He was Aegon’s bastard, and Aegon wouldn’t put it past Cregan Stark to spin the boy’s existence as an affront to the peace pact.
“Now, Gaemon. Sweet boy, I know how much you want to attend the wedding.” He paused. There was no way to break the news gently. “But today… You need to stay here in the nursery.”
“Papa?” His eyes grew huge, and Aegon noticed the tell-tale wobble in his pointy chin. The child started to sob. Aegon sighed, leaning forward to press a kiss to his reddening cheeks.
“I know, I know.”
“That’s not fair!” Jae yelled. “I want to stay too!”
Aegon couldn’t help himself but chuckle at the absurdity of the argument. One wanted to go, another wished to stay, and none got what they asked for. Poor young Aeg cast nervous looks between them, unsure how to proceed.
“Imps, none of it is fair. I know. But remember how I told you about certain rules about bastards and silly adults who jump to conclusions?” When they nodded, he kissed them both on their noses. “You’re both smart. I am sorry I have to ask this of you, but I must.”

Thursday, 19 June 1823
8 3/4
1 1/4
.. Down to breakfast at 10 55/60 – Off from Settle at 11 10/60 – Got out at the George Inn (– Pilling) Gisburn at 1 40/60 – Beautiful drive from Settle to Gisburne 11 miles –
t 5 miles from Settle (turned off to the right at long Preston) on our right very prettily situated on the rising ground above the Ribble, Halton-house (Halton West) Mr Yorke’s – let to a Mr Batty from Huddersfield – about 2 miles from Gisburne, the woods about the Park beautiful – a common white gate about a mile from the village opens into a back way leading to the house –
Gisburne a very neat-looking little market town – the church rather anticipant looking on the outside, but nothing particular within – only one monument, and that put up by one of the Listers to one of the Ashtons (styled his benefaction) in 1709 – Going to be a funeral – the church doors therefore open –
Got the clerk’s son, a boy of 13 or 14, for a guide, and walked to the hall – the Gothic approach lodges, close to the village, very handsome – the approach rather too short (perhaps 1/4 mile), but chiefly wooded on both sides, and pretty enough – the hall door open – went in – then walked round to the back part of the house – went into the kitchen, and got a woman servant to show us over the below stairs rooms – the house shewn when the family was not there – Only mylord at home – riding out in the grounds – very infirm – saw a wheel-chair like my late aunt Lister’s that he is wheeled about in – Mr Lister at York with his Craven legion – Miss Lister daily expected from London – the battle of Marston moor, a good painting by Abraham Cooper – Oliver Cromwell, General Lambert, and Captain Lister, all likenesses – Cromwell, 1/2 length by Sir Peter Lely, very good – Dr. Whitaker (in his Craven) mentions this as perhaps the best likeness ever taken of him – the house wants painting and new-furnishing – asked about the upstairs rooms – the woman said the furniture was old and worn out – they were not shewn – the place altogether indicates that its present possessor does not lay out much money upon it – a great deal wants doing – several pictures in oils by Mr Lister, and a new style in oils or resembling them that he has lately learnt in Bath – heads, landscapes – A large view of Gordale, in oils, just finished, taken by Mr Lister the best likeness of the place I remember to have seen –
walked across the park and thro’ the fields to Westby, 1/2 a mile or more, once a village and the original nest, as it were, of our family and Lord Ribblesdale’s – but the village has been taken away – and nothing remains but 2 modern looking cottages – a barn bearing no trace of antiquity, modern dog-kennels, and a large well-walled kitchen garden now in use for the hall – the wild cattle very gentle – milked night and morning, and as quiet as the rest – Midhope, great and little, 2 farm- houses, not so old looking as Westby – a mile beyond Westby – on the moor – nearer to Pendil hill – then the Midhopes must be modern indeed – perhaps recently rebuilt as farm houses – Set out to walk at 1 50/60 – got back at 4 5/60 –
Off from Gisburne at 4 17/60 – Gisburne 11 miles from Skipton, 9 from Colne, and 7 1/2 from Clitheroe – Turned down from the road to the right, and got to Salley abbey and village (4 miles) at 5 10/60 – went a few yards out of one onto the bridge over the Ribble for a distant view of Bolton hall (Colonel Bolton from Liverpool who fought a duel with ––) mentioned by Dr. Whitaker as the oldest house bishop Pococke ever saw – It was a white-looking gable-ended house, too far out of our way, and possibly not a very direct road – merely a few bits of old walls remaining of Salley Abbey – the neighbouring cottages have widely been built out of its spoils, – but are very shabby – the surrounding beautiful – the monks knew how to choose situations –
From Salley to Clitheroe beautiful drive – the first view of Clitheroe castle very imposing – this castle-capped mound and town beneath it, reminded at 6 35/60 – most beautiful drive from Gisburne to Clitheroe –
went to the castle immediately after ordering dinner and beds – Except a little of the old wall about midway the mound, the shell of a square Tower at the very top of it, and its surrounding wall at 5 or 6 yards distance is all that remains – From this wall immediately surrounding the Tower a very fine view – Pendil-hill very fine – the valley on all sides very rich – the altogether reminded us of Denbigh and the vale of Clwyd – we called Clitheroe (for it is only a miniature likeness) little Denbigh – From Clitheroe to the top of that part of Pendil over which the road goes to Huntroyde Mr Starkie’s, 2 miles – to the farthest and highest point, I should guess to be about 4 miles, going right across from the Town –
Sat down to dinner at 8 – Roast leg of lamb, mashed potatoes – goos[e]berry tarts and cream – all pretty good –
after dinner wrote out pages 34, 35, of this volume of my journal and went upstairs to bed at 12 1/4 – [E two dots O two dots, marking discharge from venereal complaint] – several drops of dischar ge very slightly tinged so that I fancied my cousin coming –
Very fine day – but the road from Settle to Long Preston so dusty, we were quite covered – after leaving Long Preston, the road was more like a by-road (tho’ good) and it was much less dusty (since any dust at all) and much pleasanter –
left margin:
Gisburne.
Westby.
Midhope.
Bolton hall.
Salley-abbey.
Clitheroe.
Clitheroe castle belongs to the old duchess of Bucleugh [Buccleuch]. the castellated house near the castle inhabited by her steward Mr Kerr.

hiya!! so i LOVE modern headcanons, and one of my favorites is your list of the gang's tv watching habits - may i ask what you think john's might be?
John Marston
John says he doesn’t really watch TV
And it’s true that he doesn’t watch tv so much as he just puts on a show while he does something else, usually streaming of some kind so it just auto plays all of the episodes
But he actually ends up absorbing a lot of information by accident because of this
Most of what he puts on is trash tv and nature documentaries
So he has this weird wealth of knowledge about like, hoarding disorders, rainforest ecosystems, plastic surgery addictions, etc.
Is it ever helpful? No. Is it ever relevant? Sometimes. Does it alienate everyone in the conversation? Always.
He also sits around with Abigail a lot and watches her period dramas and stuff. He fits in really easily with older women at social gatherings because he more or less unwillingly is up to date on shows like outlander and downtown abbey. It’s so weird to watch him entertaining the milfs.

#365daysofbiking Getting the abbey habit:
Sunday, October 25th 2020 – I’m enjoying the long rides this autumn, which is making the whole experience of the season much nicer, I must say.
This grey Sunday I wrapped up warm and headed back to the Churnet Valley, and caught the area in a lovely sunset golden hour. On the way I took an alternate route bypassing Willslock and Uttoxeter and found myself passing through Croxden, where the immense and beautiful ruined abbey took me fair by surprise: I must come back and spend time looking around it. I’ve never seen a lane actually run through a set of ruins before…
The Churnet Valley was as beautiful as it tends to be, but I had a different target in mind. Crossing the valley by Lord’s Bridge, up the gorgeous Barbary Gutter and past the dreadful Alton Towers, I pressed up past Star Bank and Threelows, looping back over the Weaver Hills, to catch them just as night fell.
I returned via Ellastone, Marston Montgomery and Sudbury, blasting down the A515 for a fast run home.
Another beautifully autumnal ride that really lifted my spirits.
This journal is also on Wordpress, where the pictures are in higher resolution and the search box works! Click here.
