The best TV of the decade? It’s a lot to sort out.
Impossible, really — and, at first pass, my picks for best shows of the 2010s wouldn’t look much different from most other critics’ lists: “Breaking Bad,” “The Americans,” “Game of Thrones,” “Twin Peaks: The Return,” “Veep,” “The Good Wife,” “Transparent,” “Atlanta,” “Fargo,” “The Crown” — that’s 10, right? Hit “send” and let’s get on with life.
But perhaps there’s another way to approach this stretch of much-too-much TV, and instead categorize the shared qualities that separated the decade’s very best shows from the heap of mediocre ones. That way, we can talk about this extraordinary period of scripted dramas and comedies without starting one last argument about where they rank.
I know readers only have time anymore to read lists, but bear with me. Here are the best kinds of shows we watched over the last 10 years. Many of them belong to more than one category — a sign of their greatness.
Anxiety-makers
These would be your nail-biters, seen mainly on prestige cable, often on Sunday nights.
Why we gorge on these cliffhanging, often upsetting dramas on the night we most need to rest up for the week ahead, I’ll never know, but we went to bed desperate over characters and story lines we couldn’t control: In AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” probably the decade’s finest work of story engineering and execution (and yes, I’m aware it premiered in 2008), when will Hank Schrader (or Skyler White) finally catch on that Walter White is the meth kingpin of New Mexico? Some of those close calls (the train episode!) and slow-building conflicts were almost too hard to take.
The decade’s other great adrenaline-producer, FX’s “The Americans,” aired on Wednesday nights, where the panic attacks seemed more manageable. How long would it take FBI agent Stan Beeman to figure out that his friendly neighbors, Philip and Elizabeth Jennings, were deeply embedded KGB spies? How much does Paige know? Will they outlast the Cold War? Showtime’s “Homeland,” meanwhile, neatly bundled our post-9/11 anxieties with the mental problems of a CIA agent who thought she could save the world.
These are but three shows that gave America’s TV addicts a strong case of the jitters. Others tried and sometimes came close. I started out the decade worrying way too much about Rick and the other doomed survivors of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” (until I gave up on them entirely a few years ago), but the show’s success is notable for its stress-inducement, which was so strong that the network started an aftershow, “Talking Dead,” to help audiences cope with the latest gory developments.
Immersive portraits
These were some of my favorite shows, broadly defined by the word “dramedy” (because they were sometimes intensely funny), but better described as character studies, portraiture — of characters I’ll never forget: Amy Jellicoe in HBO’s “Enlightened,” followed by Hannah Horvath in “Girls.
Many shows in this category can in some ways be regarded as selfies. Louis C.K., who quickly became persona-non-grata, nevertheless triumphed with “Louie,” which made it possible for similar shows to act as a mirror that not only reveals a personal nature, but a universal quality that potentially can be shared by the audience. I’m thinking here of Donald Glover’s “Atlanta” (FX), Aziz Ansari’s “Master of None” (Netflix), Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “Fleabag” (along with “Catastrophe”) and Pamela Adlon’s “Better Things” (FX).
This genre also, at long last, helped television achieve the diversity it had for too long failed to produce. Issa Rae’s “Insecure” (HBO) is a triumph in the way it both inhabits its creator’s viewpoint as millennial black woman, yet welcomes viewers of any sort.
To that list add Hulu’s “Ramy” and “Pen15,” HBO’s “Looking” and Comedy Central’s “Broad City” — any show where a viewer potentially discovers someone unlike themselves: different age, different background, different race. Or, more importantly, a viewer at long last sees themselves in the main character.
Washington certainly saw its uglier self in Armando Iannucci’s gloriously foul-mouthed “Veep” (HBO), the true definition of comic relief and on-point satire at a time when politics grew unfathomably absurd.
Metaphorical profundity
The best dramas in the 2010s reflected a larger message about the society that watched them — sometimes obliquely, sometimes bluntly. Despite its notably weakened final season, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” has proper claim, I think, to be deemed the show of the decade, but not just because it grew so popular. It’s because how much of it seemed to eerily echo our surroundings: Climate change (and denial of it); shocking acts of violence; widespread social collapse; galling politics; extreme disparities in class and wealth; weapons of mass destruction . . . I could go on.
Timing is everything. Hulu took a 1985 dystopian novel — Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” — revved it up and released it just as the Trump administration began detaining, locking up and banning immigrants, appointed conservative judges and looked the other way at nationalist fervor. The metaphor there was almost too applicable; fortunately, the show was strong enough to withstand the hype.
Viewers learned how to find meaning in just about any show — the betters ones made it more compelling: AMC’s “Mad Men” was a beguiling search for the soul of the 20th century; CBS’s “The Good Wife” was a wicked running commentary on politics, technology and modern relationships; NBC’s “This Is Us” was (and still is) a fascinating rumination on the essence of what makes a family. (Note to all you Ancestry genealogy nuts: It’s not just DNA.)
Happy-snarky-sweet
Certain comedies just make us feel better (and also sharper, wittier — empowered, even) no matter how many times we re-watch old episodes. It’s in the camaraderie aspect, the life lessons, the archetypal arrangements, the snarkiness glossed over by group cohesion. It’s a continuation of what began in the best multicamera, studio-audience, ersatz-family sitcoms (“Cheers,” “Seinfeld”), rejiggered for a wired generation. Most of them aired on NBC: “Parks and Recreation,” “30 Rock,” “Community,” “The Office,” “The Good Place,” “Superstore” — now joined by “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” A few others aired on other networks, giving viewers a similar satisfaction: “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS; “Modern Family,”“Happy Endings,” “Cougar Town” and “Black-ish” on ABC.
Transformative tellings
In addition to finding new narrative styles and (quite belatedly) focusing on overlooked demographics, TV turned out to be an excellent venue for recasting an old story from a fresh perspective or enlightened distance.
I’m thinking here of FX’s “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson,” a compelling departure from the way we popularly regarded that murder trial. It inspired others to dramatize previous events with a corrective, even courageous new viewpoint — such as Netflix’s “When They See Us,” about the unjustly imprisoned teens who were wrongly coerced into confessing to a 1989 Central Park attack on a female jogger.
Crime wasn’t the only subject in need of a remix. Both “Downton Abbey” (PBS) and “The Crown” (Netflix) succeeded because of the way they re-examine extreme privilege, without preventing us from enjoying the luxurious roll in it.
Some shows were revelatory in more subtle ways: Jill Soloway’s “Transparent” (Amazon Prime) masterfully wove a woman’s journey with the entirety of modern American Judaism, enlightening its audience to more than just the trans experience. And Showtime’s “The Affair” played with the very nature of truth, telling the story of marital infidelity from competing — and crucially different — perspectives.
Impossible puzzles and true art
If the decade in TV will be remembered for anything, it will likely be the complexity of some shows. The weirdness. The unexpected swerves. It turned its viewers into perpetual puzzle-solvers and conspiracy theorists. After beginning the decade with an unsatisfying wrap-up of ABC’s “Lost,” co-creator Damon Lindelof returned on HBO with a confounding take on “The Leftovers,” finally mastering the balance between befuddlement and momentum with “Watchmen.”
There are, finally, two standouts — and they challenged my ceaseless harangue about reboots. One was Noah Hawley’s expanded and wholly reimagined take for FX on “Fargo,” a Midwestern crime saga first seen in Joel and Ethan Coen’s 1996 film classic.
The other was David Lynch’s long-delayed but staggeringly beautiful sequel to his 1990 TV sensation “Twin Peaks.” Critics argued, somewhat pointlessly, whether “Twin Peaks: The Return” (Showtime) was a very long film or a strangely protracted TV series.
I can settle that: It was nothing short of pure art — unexpected, absolutely original and layered with deep, trippy meaning. Of all the TV I slogged through in the 2010s, it’s the show I most look forward to someday watching again.

Week 3: Movie Week Songs
I was hoping for good films this year and that was DELIVERED let’s get into it!
Anneka and Kevin: Woo Hoo by The 5.6.7.8′s from Kill Bill (Charleston) - Kill Bill oddly suits Anneka?? I cannot wait for this one XD.
Alex and Neil: How Far I’ll Go by Auli’l Cravalho from Moana (Rumba) - Time for Neil to get his revenge XD. Of COURSE they’re doing Moana, only they could do Moana. Seriously, just give them the bloody trophy now.
Catherine and Johannes: Shallow by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga from A Star Is Born (Rumba) - Omg I think this’ll suit them so well XD. I also look forward to this one!
Emma and Anton: Soul Bossa Nova by Quincy Jones from Austin Powers (Salsa) - Didn’t Mark and Iveta do an Austin Powers based Salsa?? I swear their’s was also Austin Powers themed but I’m SURE this will be better than whatever that was XD.
V.Emma and Aljaz: Downton Abbey by John Lunn from Downton Abbey (Foxtrot) - OH THIS ONE’S FUNNY XD. I know V.Emma’s got a V in her but I didn’t think she was this classy XD.
( @missemperor ) Michelle and Giovanni: Cabaret by Liza Minelli from Cabaret (Quickstep) - MICHELLE’S GONNA BE LIKE REI SAITOU I’M BUZZING. More used to this being a Charleston song but Quickstep should be just as great! Plus I legit noticed last weekend that Gio’s doing the exact same dances as he did with Faye last year and THIS WEEK IT’S THE SAME AGAIN seriously I’m waiting for them to break the pattern at this point XD.
Saffron and AJ: Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Lorde from The Hunger Games (Paso Doble) - If Saffron’s Paso face is going to be anything like her Tango face I am NOT here for it. I never really got into that whole Hunger Games hype, I kind of watched it but never paid attention, but I guess the kids of today seem to still love it.
Chris and Karen: Cheek To Cheek by Frank Sinatra from Top Hat (American Smooth Foxtrot) - Oh my god I remember Sophie Ellis-Bextor did a Foxtrot to this, as in, THE FIRST WOMAN I KIND OF CONSCIOUSLY HAD A CRUSH ON. Fuck 2013 was a gay year for me. I’m really hoping Chris is gonna bring some class to this and show a more graceful side XD. Also give poor Sinatra a rest every week someone’s done a Frank Sinatra song is Dave Arch just creepily obsessed with him or something??
David and Nadiya: Kiss From a Rose Seal from Batman Forever (American Smooth Viennese Waltz) - Okay I’m guessing this is a Viennese Waltz with lifts then?? Cos like I know an American Smooth to be a Foxtrot with lifts and other stuff but they never seem to specify that XD. Anyway, if David’s not dressed as Batman I am gonna be mad.
Dev and Dianne: Friend Like Me by Will Smith from Aladdin (Couple’s Choice) - Doesn’t specify what choice they actually made but here we go. Why did they use the new version?? YOU’RE COVERING IT ANYWAY GO FOR THE CLASSIC. Nothing wrong with it.
Karim and Amy: Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas from Kung Fu Panda (Samba) - KARIM WILL BE GOOD AT THE SAMBA I TELL YOU NOW. Also, if he’s not dressed like a panda, I will be mad. Seriously you think you’ve seen my rage before, you have not.
Kelvin and Oti: Trip A Little Light Fantastic by Lin Manuel Miranda from Mary Poppins Returns (Charleston) - Another movie week Charleston for Oti and rip original Mary Poppins XD. I’ve not seen this new one so idk what to expect will it just be like hip and funky Julie Andrews??
Mike and Katya: It’s Raining Men by The Weather Girls from Magic Mike (Cha Cha Cha) - Right, I get the name thing, but am I the only one who hears this song and NEVER thinks of some film about a stripper?? Is there more than one of them I DON’T EVEN KNOW. Is it like if The Full Monty was just Guy and he could actually do the walking up walls thing?? IS MIKE GOING TO DO THAT?? I have so many questions, I just, shit.
Will and Janette: Gotta Catch ‘Em All Original Theme by Jason Paige from Pokemon (Paso Doble) - THIS IS OFFICIALLY THE BEST YET ALSO THE FUNNIEST MOVIE WEEK SONG CHOICE EVER LIKE I ACTUALLY FULL ON LAUGHED FOR AN HOUR AT THIS BUT I’M ALSO BUZZING. ANIME HAS FINALLY MADE IT ON TO STRICTLY. WILL BETTER BE DRESSED AS ASH KETCHUM AND JANETTE’S EITHER GONNA BE MISTY OR SOME KIND OF WEIRD ANTHROPOMORPHIC PIKACHU. THIS IS THE MOST INTENSE POKEMON WILL EVER GET. DOES THIS ALSO MEAN THAT SAILOR MOON WILL BE ALLOWED ON TO STRICTLY ONE YEAR COS SIGN ME UP FOR THAT.
Well that’s all, I already know which dance will be the best so there’s no point in anyone else even trying. That’s either a dig at someone I don’t like or me really set on loving one of them, you take your pick.

Almost unrecognisable from her role as the dowdy housekeeper in Downton Abbey, Phyllis Logan is starring in an exotic new medical drama. She talks to Judith Woods about seizing the day and those Downton movie rumours… 'Obviously I never had a career to speak of before Downton Abbey,’ says Phyllis Logan drily, raising an eyebrow for further effect. ‘I sometimes wonder how on earth did I fill my time?’ It’s not true, of course, but we all know what she means: sometimes a jobbing actress is swept away by a juggernaut of a role that takes her a very long way from where she used to be. The Downton effect has had an impact on the career of every member of its award-winning ensemble cast. Lily James has starred in the BBC’s War & Peace and the movie Cinderella, Michelle Dockery landed a role as a criminal in the gritty US show Good Behavior, Joanne Froggatt played a serial killer in the ITV series Dark Angel – and now Phyllis is set to star in a new ITV drama series, The Good Karma Hospital. But it’s her years in service to the Crawley family that have made her a poster girl for ladies of a certain age who refuse to accept that life holds no more adventure. When her doughty but warm-hearted character Mrs Hughes finally found love with the pompous but kindly butler Mr Carson, it struck a blow for midlife love. In those days ‘Mrs’ was an honorific title bestowed on senior female staff, regardless of whether they had ever wed, so Mrs Hughes’s comical angst about whether he would be expecting ‘a full marriage’ struck a chord with any woman over 40 who has ever fretted about going to bed with a new partner. ‘Mrs Hughes was aerated about the sex thing because she probably hadn’t had much experience, but that turned out to be the least of her bloomin’ worries,’ acknowledges Phyllis. ‘God preserve us all from nitpicking middle-aged men who can’t abide change.’ In the phenomenally successful series, which ran for six seasons, Mr Carson (played by Jim Carter) turned out to be irrevocably stuck in his ways – the routines of the big house where he had been serving for many years. Ironically, it was his new wife’s performance in the couple’s kitchen (as opposed to the bedroom) that proved his greatest source of disappointment. Eventually, with affectionate pragmatism, the pair decided he should eat his meals at the Downton kitchen, cooked by Mrs Patmore, as before. ‘It’s a very identifiable scenario,’ says Phyllis, 61. ‘When a more mature couple makes a life together, each brings certain expectations and baggage and of course there’s always need for compromise, which some men in particular find difficult. Phyllis, once best known for playing posh totty Lady Jane Felsham in the 1980s and 90s series Lovejoy, was a late starter herself when it came to settling down. She met her husband, Pirates of the Caribbean actor Kevin McNally, in the 1993 miniseries Love and Reason when she was in her late 30s, but they didn’t get round to tying the knot until she was 55. ‘I had always sworn I would never have an actor in the house because they are so much trouble and so vain, but you can’t legislate for Cupid’s bow,’ she says. When she got together with Kevin, theirs was not a series of careful compromises but a classic coup de foudre. ‘I never thought real love – the sort where your blood tingles and your world explodes with joy – would happen to me at my time of life. I believed I had missed out. But I’m ever so glad it happened.’ A couple of years later, aged 40, she had their son David. He is now 20 and studying music and music production at university in Leeds. Once upon a time, reaching six decades was a milestone to be dreaded rather than celebrated, but, in well-cut jeans and a flattering floaty top, her burnished hair hanging loose, Phyllis provides incontrovertible proof that though life may not begin at 60, it sure as heck continues at a rip-roaring pace – as long as you have the right attitude towards the rollercoaster. ‘We packed David off to university not so long ago and as we drove back to our house in West London we were listening to the Elaine Paige show on Radio 2,’ recalls Phyllis. ‘She played Peggy Lee singing “The Folks Who Live on the Hill” and as soon as I heard the line “and when the kids grow up and leave us” I burst into absolute floods of tears and spent the rest of the journey splashing about in the passenger seat. But since then I’ve thought a lot about empty nest syndrome and how once your chick flies the coop it gives women the freedom to stretch their own wings once more, too.’ And as fate would have it, Phyllis’s new role in The Good Karma Hospital has allowed her to do just that and will doubtless prove a source of inspiration to a great many female viewers in a similar position. Set in India, the series features another estimable actress, Amanda Redman, 59, who plays an eccentric expat running a ramshackle cottage hospital, which is short on resources and long on compassion. ‘It’s a cross between Holby City and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel but with dark secrets, so it should be right up everybody’s street,’ says Phyllis. ‘I play Maggie Smart, who has come to India for her daughter’s wedding and becomes unwell, so ends up in hospital and falls deeply in love. Not with a man – she already has a husband – but rather with the community, the culture and the way of life. She’s a fascinating character who has such humour and joie de vivre and it was great to play a woman finding herself and connecting with a wider spirituality.’ Phyllis spent months filming the six-part series on location in Sri Lanka. She, too, found herself smitten with the place and the people and at one point Kevin flew over from the US where he is in the cast of the US television series Turn: Washington’s Spies and they managed a 12-day break together. ‘We stayed in a hotel on the beach and it was bliss. The majority of the population are Buddhists and seemed so calm, open and thankful for whatever life gave them; I think we could all learn from them.’ All the same, Phyllis isn’t entirely convinced she believes in karma as a concept. ‘It would be nice to think that if you are a decent human being then eventually things will turn out right,’ she says. ‘But fate can intervene and pull the rug out from under you without warning and there might be nothing you can do.’ It is something she and Kevin can speak of from personal experience. Phyllis’s mother died from a dementia-related illness aged 90, but it was the agonisingly slow decline of Kevin’s mother over many years that proved more devastating. ‘Kev’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in her early 60s and from then on his father became her carer and it was so hard for him. She reached the point where she didn’t recognise her own son and was agitated and upset because she had no idea where she was or who she was; that was heartbreaking to witness.’ Phyllis is an ambassador for Dementia UK and does what she can to support the charity’s work. ‘It’s such a cruel disease. I am aware there’s a genetic component so I do brain-training on my phone every day. Will that help stave it off? I have no idea; I think of Iris Murdoch – such a clever woman who dealt with words and complex memories all her life, and yet all those things that made her so creative and unique were taken while she was still alive. Ultimately, all you can do is cross your fingers and make the most of every day.’ Phyllis is certainly doing that. Last year was a veritable Air Miles bonanza; as well as her sojourn in Sri Lanka she went to Sydney for a Downton DVD launch, Los Angeles where the ensemble cast of Downton won yet another Screen Actors Guild Award, and then to New York to receive the prestigious Great Scot Award from the US branch of the National Trust for Scotland (previous recipients include comedian Billy Connolly and actor Alan Cumming). She wore a dress bought in John Lewis embellished for the occasion with a tartan sash and matching ribbon. ‘I’m not interested in fashion,’ Phyllis confides. ‘It’s just not on my radar. Whenever I’m doing a contemporary role, the wardrobe mistress will usually say, “Let’s go to Selfridges and get a personal shopper.” Most women would probably love it, but my face falls because I absolutely hate trying on clothes. One of the things I loved about Downton was the fact I had two outfits and maybe a coat if I got to go into the village; the girls in the Crawley family kept having to go for fittings every time there was a big dinner, which would have driven me mad.’ Logan loves… Reading Alan Bennett’s Keeping On Keeping On. I love him; my husband Kev played him in the stage version of The Lady in the Van. Listening to The Today programme on Radio 4 and Classic FM. Watching I do enjoy a good nature documentary. Planet Earth II was spectacularly good. Guilty pleasure A whole bag of Kettle Chips with a crisp glass of Picpoul de Pinet. Beauty product Boots No7 moisturiser; it’s not fancy but it does the job. Desert island luxury A karaoke machine, stage, lights and all the songs from the 70s. I’ll make a row of coconuts for an audience and there’ll be no stopping me. The ongoing international popularity of Downton means Phyllis and various other cast members are still asked to appear at events to meet the fans and launch DVDs. She’s often asked about her wigs and whether she kept one; she had three identical hairpieces all of which she affectionately dubbed Elsie. ‘People ask me if I was tempted to take a wig or that big bunch of keys I carried, but that would be theft, because these things aren’t my property,’ says Phyllis emphatically. ‘Besides, if there’s a Downton movie, which I hope will happen, all the props and costumes will be needed.’ Ah yes, the Downton film; rumours still swirl but so far there’s been no confirmation. According to Phyllis it may yet happen if – and it’s a huge if – the cast members can ever be gathered in one place long enough. ‘It’s like herding cats!’ she laughs. ‘We’re all so busy and in different countries, but it would be such fun to get together again. The camaraderie on set was extraordinary.’ Phyllis was in every episode of the family saga. Her husband even appeared in a handful of episodes as Horace Bryant, the stern father of an army major who fraternised with housemaid Ethel (Amy Nuttall), getting her pregnant before he died in action. Horace persuaded her to hand over his grandchild to him, which was brutal but necessary as she had been sacked from Downton in disgrace and had taken to prostitution in order to survive. ‘I was quite miffed that the producer had offered Kev a job without even consulting me,’ laughs Phyllis. ‘I wouldn’t dream of queering his pitch – although I do think I’d be great as Johnny Depp’s mother in a Pirates of the Caribbean film [in which Kevin plays Joshamee Gibbs]. And every lad needs a cuddle from his mother now, doesn’t he?’ Her eyes glitter with the sort of mischief Mrs Hughes would most certainly not approve of, but now Phyllis has emerged from the shadow of her fictional alter ego, she is keen to push boundaries. Last summer she resolved to challenge herself by taking on a theatre role in a dazzling touring production of Noël Coward’s Present Laughter, alongside Samuel West. ‘The prospect of going back on stage was a bit frightening, but that is exactly why I embraced it,’ she says. ‘I can be a bit of a scaredy-cat so I have to push myself and I was so very glad I did. It took me right back to my early days as an actress: booking my own digs, sitting on the seafront on my day off eating fish and chips. I also got to see fascinating places such as Canterbury, Cambridge and Brighton.’ Seeing the world – be it near or far – is something she gently urges all women to do once the kids have left. ‘Travel does broaden the mind and fill the senses,’ she says. ‘It gives you a new perspective and there are so many beautiful regions in Britain that I can think of no better way to spend time than exploring them because you’re a long time dead – so carpe diem, ladies!’ The Good Karma Hospital will be on ITV next month. 15 Shows to Watch This Winter
RIVERDALE (CW, Jan. 26) Betty’s on Adderall, Archie’s making love having an instructor, and Josie and also the Pussycats are practicing along the corridor. Aguirre – Greg and Sacasa adaptation of the Comics figures provides a splash of small town weirdness to some main-course of secret that is adolescent -melodrama, filled with G.G.- style. (Madchen Amick, who had been in “Twin Peaks” and “Gossip Woman,” performs Betty’s mom.)
THE QUAD (GUESS, Jan. 31) Your desire to have a shiny, vast melodrama having a severe advantage might be pleased by this new sequence established in an imaginary traditionally black university in Atlanta. Noni Rose performs Santiago and the president -Hudson the first choice of the marching group, which consumes a amount of the educational budget up.
SANTA CLARITA DIET (Netflix, Feb. 3) Winner Fresco, inventor of “Better Off Ted” and “Andy Richter Regulates the World,” reaches consider his make of surrealism-lite even more within this occasionally difficult-to-view Netflix humor that leavens show formulations with massive gore. Drew Barrymore stars like a show mother whose unexpected zombification significantly enhances her sex-life and attracts her household together Olyphant performs her – spouse that is male.

LEGION (FX, Feb. 8) The author and maker Noah Hawley (“Fargo” on FX) allows his internal Terry Gilliam off the lead within this sequence having a Wonder Comics mutant whose energy would be to digest others’ forces. The first attacks are frenetic and difficult to follow, but there’s guarantee within the casting: John Stevens (“Downton Abbey”), a far more delicate and fascinating actor than we often enter superhero functions.
THE WORLD two (BBC America, Feb. 18) ten years following the unique “Planet Planet,” David Attenborough and also the BBC Natural History Device are again with another eight hours of beautiful character adult, chance within the span of 3 years in 40 nations.
LARGE LITTLE LIES (HBO, Feb. 19). This high profile HBO crisis appears a great deal lighter-than current choices like “The Nights,”“Westworld” and sometimes even “The Young Pope.” centered on a book by Liane Moriarty, it’s concerning the marital and legal misadventures of ladies whose kids attend the exact same college, and also the truck guarantees shores and large-breathing intercourse. The actual tale below, however, is reputation: The mini series was made from the Gandalf David E, of Television authors. Kelley; focused by Jean Marc Vallée (“Dallas Customers Club”); and has a critique-killing throw which includes Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgard and Laura Dern.
THE GREAT BATTLE (CBS All-Access, Feb. 19) that much expected spinoff of the extended-working legitimate crisis “The Great Wife”— by which Christine Baranski reprises her part whilst the noble Diane Lockhart — makes its initial on CBS’s new loading support.

THE AMERICANS (FX, March) Television’s greatest hourlong display results, and we trust the piece lengths launched within the sixth-period elite may cohere into gripping and delicate crisis. The Soviet embeds Elizabeth possess a goal that is fresh, their child Paige maintains growing the F.B.I, right into a lethal issue. Broker Stan Beeman stays incredibly obtuse, and somebody we like dies prior to the first-hour has ended. Traveler businessasusual.
NATIONAL PRIZE (Hulu, March 1) This BBC mini series — on the basis of the police analysis that come, especially, within the posthumous intercourse-neglect facts concerning the tv and radio character Jimmy Savile — includes an excellent main mixture: Robbie Coltrane (“Cracker,” the Harry Potter films) performs a respected British comic charged of pedophilia, and Julie Walters (“Educating Rita,”“Billy Elliot”) performs his spouse.
TEST & MISTAKE (NBC, March 7) There’s no cause to consider this sequence, in regards to a youthful Ny attorney who moves Towards the South to protect a crazy composition teacher charged of homicide, won’t be an entirely traditional system show. However John Lithgow, 16 years from “3rd Stone in The Sunlight,” therefore it may be worth a search plaies the teacher.
HARLOTS (Hulu, March 29) One of The season’s English costume dramas, that one — a satirical dramedy starring Samantha Morton and Lesley Manville as dueling brothel owners in 18th century London — is my choose over “Victoria” and “Taboo.”
THE HANDMAID’S STORY (Hulu, May 26) Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men”) performs a handmaid, or sex-slave and childbearer, within this variation of Maggie Atwood’s book in regards to a near-potential America (renamed Gilead) dominated by religious extremists. The pilot provides guarantee that science-fiction will be emphasized by the sequence over viewpoint, which wouldn’t be considered a point that is poor.
A of the post seems in publications on Jan 6, 2017, on Site C1 of the Ny version using the heading: 15 Standouts in Television’s Year.

Autumn has come quickly this year. Following our very warm summer, punctuated by two historically infernally-hot heat waves, ones which toasted grape vines in the south of France, 2019 looks to have yielded vintage worthy harvests in both Bordeaux and Champagne. As of now, though, we are well into a cold and rainy autumn, with harvests finished and musts already fermenting in tanks.
More about remarkable trees in Paris, click on Photo (by Un Jour de Plus à Paris)
Walking through the Jardins de Luxembourg with my dog here in Paris, it’s fun to watch her raise her snout and sniff the breeze to catch those Fall whiffs of fallen chestnuts and amber leaves. Here in France, a sure sign that the season has changed to one of yellows, rusts and orange, is the sight of street vendors selling cones of roasted chestnuts. As I exited the Musée d’Orsay on Sunday, after spending the afternoon looking at the Degas à l’Opéra exhibit, the soothing, delicious smell of roasted chestnuts greeted me. It’s one of those smells which, for me, will always be Paris.
The Horse Chestnut Tree , le châtaignier in French, is ubiquitous all over the city. At this time of year, Paris streets and parks are laden with its gleaming, dark brown, shiny nuts called Marron. The marron are the edible nuts. It’s admirably enterprising of these chestnut roasters since undoubtedly they simply harvest their nuts from the many Parisian parks, set up a mobile roasting cart, and sell these delicious, sweet and nutty warm treats outside popular Parisian landmarks, like the Musée d’Orsay, the Louvre and the Pont des Arts.
According to August Chevalier, writing in 1941, we don’t know the origin nor the history of these chestnut trees here in Paris. But it’s thought that they were cultivated since the Middle Ages by the monasteries and abbey monks who numbered significantly throughout the Paris region for at least the past 1000 years. The same holds true for the once abundant olive and walnut trees in the region.
In these show notes, you will find several links to books and blogs that will help you delve more deeply into Paris and its beautiful trees, trees whose leaves are synonymous with the changing aubergine, amber and orange colors of Fall.
But right now, we’re turning our attention to wine and truffles. Notably, this episode of Paris GOODfood+wine takes you to the famous La Tour d’Argent, long regarded as Paris’ finest restaurant, and certainly still the very best wine cellar in the whole city if not all of France.

We’ll be speaking with the newly appointed Chef Sommelier, Julien Touitou, who has just been handed the reins by the iconic David Ridgway who is now in semi-retirement.
Then, we head to Burgundy. This is truffle country and we happen to be visiting the Chateau de Vault de Lugny which has its very own truffière, or truffle garden. Truffles are harvested so abundantly here some years that the husband and wife who run the exquisite chateau hotel sometimes even offer their guests a complimentary truffle upon check-in. Beware, though, these are the real kind and not chocolate truffles as one American visitor once mistook them for. Though he quickly realized his error as soon as he bit into it.
You can read more about my visit to the Chateau de Vault de Lugny on 10BEST.com in my article Fairy Tale Vacation: The best chateaus to visit.
Franco Bowanee, 1 star Michelin Chef; Karina Laval Chef Patissière, Restaurant Louis XIII, Burgundy photo by Paige Donner copyright 2019

But for this interview, we are focusing on the husband and wife team who runs the Michelin starred restaurant, Louis XIII. They are both originally from the Mauritius Islands. She, Karina Laval, is the Chef Patissière, specialized in ice cream. In fact, she is the very first woman in France to compete for the Meilleur Ouvrier de France (MOF) in ice cream. He, Franco Bowanee, delights in picking his fresh vegetables in the garden out back and then serving them just a few moments later on your plate. He has truly found his niche by subtly blending exotic island spices from his native home with classic French dishes. You’ll be astounded by how wonderfully this pairs with a gorgeous, crisp Grand Cru Chablis which is their local wine region.
So, let’s get started. First up is Julien Touitou….
