Saying the Republican party represents Christian values because of its stance on abortion is like saying that McDonald’s is a vegetarian restaurant because they offer salads.

Sorkin Girls, Well the world changed late last night in a way I couldn’t protect us from. That’s a terrible feeling for a father. I won’t sugarcoat it—this is truly horrible. It’s hardly the first time my candidate didn’t win (in fact it’s the sixth time) but it is the first time that a thoroughly incompetent pig with dangerous ideas, a serious psychiatric disorder, no knowledge of the world and no curiosity to learn has. And it wasn’t just Donald Trump who won last night—it was his supporters too. The Klan won last night. White nationalists. Sexists, racists and buffoons. Angry young white men who think rap music and Cinco de Mayo are a threat to their way of life (or are the reason for their way of life) have been given cause to celebrate. Men who have no right to call themselves that and who think that women who aspire to more than looking hot are shrill, ugly, and otherwise worthy of our scorn rather than our admiration struck a blow for misogynistic shitheads everywhere. Hate was given hope. Abject dumbness was glamorized as being “the fresh voice of an outsider” who’s going to “shake things up.” (Did anyone bother to ask how? Is he going to re-arrange the chairs in the Roosevelt Room?) For the next four years, the President of the United States, the same office held by Washington and Jefferson, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, F.D.R., J.F.K. and Barack Obama, will be held by a man-boy who’ll spend his hours exacting Twitter vengeance against all who criticize him (and those numbers will be legion). We’ve embarrassed ourselves in front of our children and the world. And the world took no time to react. The Dow futures dropped 7,000 points overnight. Economists are predicting a deep and prolonged recession. Our NATO allies are in a state of legitimate fear. And speaking of fear, Muslim-Americans, Mexican-Americans and African-Americans are shaking in their shoes. And we’d be right to note that many of Donald Trump’s fans are not fans of Jews. On the other hand, there is a party going on at ISIS headquarters. What wouldn’t we give to trade this small fraction of a man for Richard Nixon right now? So what do we do? First of all, we remember that we’re not alone. A hundred million people in America and a billion more around the world feel exactly the same way we do. Second, we get out of bed. The Trumpsters want to see people like us (Jewish, “coastal elites,” educated, socially progressive, Hollywood…) sobbing and wailing and talking about moving to Canada. I won’t give them that and neither will you. Here’s what we’ll do… …we’ll fucking fight. (Roxy, there’s a time for this kind of language and it’s now.) We’re not powerless and we’re not voiceless. We don’t have majorities in the House or Senate but we do have representatives there. It’s also good to remember that most members of Trump’s own party feel exactly the same way about him that we do. We make sure that the people we sent to Washington—including Kamala Harris—take our strength with them and never take a day off. We get involved. We do what we can to fight injustice anywhere we see it—whether it’s writing a check or rolling up our sleeves. Our family is fairly insulated from the effects of a Trump presidency so we fight for the families that aren’t. We fight for a woman to keep her right to choose. We fight for the First Amendment and we fight mostly for equality—not for a guarantee of equal outcomes but for equal opportunities. We stand up. America didn’t stop being America last night and we didn’t stop being Americans and here’s the thing about Americans: Our darkest days have always—always—been followed by our finest hours. Roxy, I know my predictions have let you down in the past, but personally, I don’t think this guy can make it a year without committing an impeachable crime. If he does manage to be a douche nozzle without breaking the law for four years, we’ll make it through those four years. And three years from now we’ll fight like hell for our candidate and we’ll win and they’ll lose and this time they’ll lose for good. Honey, it’ll be your first vote. The battle isn’t over, it’s just begun. Grandpa fought in World War II and when he came home this country handed him an opportunity to make a great life for his family. I will not hand his granddaughter a country shaped by hateful and stupid men. Your tears last night woke me up, and I’ll never go to sleep on you again. Love, Dad

I Will Not Fear
I am aware I am exceptionally long winded. But if you have a moment please consider this:
I don’t care who you voted for. Shouting in anger or raising fists against eachother is not going to erase the results today. This is happening right now whether you voted it or not. But the government has always been broken, this isn’t new. What we do from here, who we become is what is important now. I know there is a lot of fear. And a lot of people are becoming angry because of that fear. And I hear you. Stop reacting to our concerns and fear by reminding us how bad Hilary is and how the lesser of evils was chosen out of a sorry excuse for choices. I don’t want a sorry, nor do I want a justification. You have every right to vote whomever you choose for whatever reason. But I need you to understand something you are missing: a lot of the fear is legitimate from things we have heard Trump say and Pence do towards women’s rights, LGBT, religions, race, low income working classes, and other minorities. We are all apart of this country and we all have to live in it. I am sure that the people I know didn’t vote for Trump because they hated females or minorities, there were other issues outside of these that I know they were thinking of. And I hear you too. But I need you to understand that it wasn’t about Trump per say. It was about what he stood for as a bigger picture; what he represented. Early in his campaign he propagated a lot of hate. And he never dissuaded it. A lot of people voted for him for the wrong reasons. When he took the stage people shouted “kill Obama”, or “get the blacks/mexicans/Muslims out!” Women were assaulted today. And yes, all these problems were a problem before, but there was hope before. There was same sex marriage. The outcry after the Orlando shooting. I was at a Pride parade where a man was saying hateful things and the marching band turned around to stand next to him and drown him out… but there was only one man and not many. I was at the march for pro-choice in Washington where all manners of people banded together for a woman’s right to control her own body. There has been a lot more awarness towards victim shaming women who have been assaulted. Brock Turner may have escaped the legal system but he didnt escape society as it rose up and screamed “I will be justice”. There was hope despite the hate there was hope. Real honest to goodness hope for young people that maybe found themselves a little different. For women and our rights not to be assaulted because of what we are wearing and to have equality. And now there is less of that. Now there is the fear that so many of the people that voted for Trump are the ones that did it for the wrong reasons; the ones that did it for hate and I’m truly sorry but we can’t tell any of you apart right now. It wasn’t Trump. It was the hate he allowed we feared. Its the hate that grew from his speaches and rallys and words. Its our fellow Americans that view this as an oppurtunity to hurt us. And our fear only grows when you remind us that Hilary was worse like our fears are ridiculous. Or you say “make America great again” because I dont know which American history you are refering too and some of our history is pretty scary. We all had a sense of dread going into this election and I am sure there was fear driving every vote no matter the side. And I for one hope that Trump surprises us all. What I want from America isn’t justifications or apologies. I dont want you to regret your choices or to make you feel bad as I am sure you have your reasons and for you they were good ones. Part of being an American is your right to differing views. And whether or not we agree we should all defend eachothers rights to those opinions. What I want is a promise. I want you to say that should anyone try to take even the smallest bit of my rights or my neighbors rights that you have our back. That if some of the people that are now feeling they have a free pass at being bullies or hateful to any of your fellow Americans that you have their back. Always. That regardless we can unite. We can choose who we want to be as people and a nation from this point forward. We have no control of the elections now, but we have control of how we go out into the world from this moment on. The future is still uncertain. So no matter who you voted for: I promise you. Should your rights be challenged, should you be bullied, should injustice befall you I will march with you. I will cry with you. I will bleed with you. A change happens when society changes. And I will put out as much good as I can into it. For a brighter future.

PSA: This is the last I am going to say about the Pokémon GO situation between those who do not play and those that do. First: yes, I do have a life. Just like you. I go to work forty plus hours a week and come home to do laundry, clean, and take care of my fuzzy companions. I pay my bills. If I want to spend my spare time adventuring around my town I have every right. Second: No I am not 'ten'. But I was pretty young when I became a fan of Pokémon. And who are you to decide at what age it becomes inappropriate to like something? No one. If this is the insult you want to throw my way I assume that you don't watch Disney, buy coloring books, eat several brands of cereal, play with legos, and pretty much have stopped doing anything you enjoyed at a younger age. Which I would find sad. There is nothing wrong with spending time back in your childhood when things were a lot more simple, especially with how mundane being an adult can be. So if anyone has things that take them back that they enjoy, then GOOD. Third: If your only real problem is that you are sick of hearing about it, it is completely unnecessary to be insulting and derogatory. I do not belittle you for the things you enjoy or for cluttering my feed with sports paraphernalia, I expect the same respect. Fourth: I think you should take a deeper look at yourself that you feel the need to bash other people that are having fun. I would like to live your life that something this small is allegedly the only thing you can find to be so upset about. Me, I have what seems like a never ending stream of things to stress about and for a few hours I can play Pokémon GO and take a breather from them. Fifth: Everyone has the right to enjoy things. You dont have to partake, nor do you have to understand. If you have something you enjoy then that is wonderful. No matter what someone might think, don't give up on it. Life is so short. It's too short to spend doing nothing but work and getting by and denying yourself things because somehow you got the idea in your head that you are 'too old'. I repeat: SO SHORT. Find something you can enjoy and be happy about. And don't begrudge others theirs, be happy for them. Sixth: If you knew what Pokémon GO has done for people, or the mechanics of it you would know that it isn't just staring at your phone like some mindless drone. I have travelled my hometown and discovered things I did not know. We have a wall of art. A wall of freakin' art! I discovered you can rent kayaks. I watched the sun set all week. I got to teach little kids and their parents how to play the game. I talked with random interesting people I never would have met. Because let's face it, we all say we are going to get out and then we get home and just decide to stay in. Well Pokémon GO got us out! And the phone vibrates when there is a Pokémon meaning I don't have to stare at my phone. I get to see things. Experience things. Laugh with people. I feel energized. Vitamin D deficiency is running rampant and we are out soaking up the sun! Some of the kids I was teaching at the fort, you know what they did? They stopped and read the signs at the cemetery there. They discovered things. All thanks to something you find 'stupid'. People of every background, race, religious, sexual orientation are out talking to eachother! That's amazing, and you don't even know how amazing it is because you are too busy hating this 'fad'. Lastly: I don't care if you play. I don't care if you understand it. I agree some people are being irresponsible with it but that isn't the fault of the game, it's a human error. I don't begrudge you not playing it, so don't try to take away the joy from other people. It's bitter, and it's sad. And I sincerely hope that you don't want to be the kind of person that tries to ruin other people's happiness. Or at the very least can be the adult you keep claiming I am not and be respectful and worry about you, not what others are doing.
