when i started reading aftg fanfics, i was genuinely so startled that everyone wrote Aaron as homophobic. Like it had never even crossed my mind for him to be homophobic. I always interpreted Aaron as very younger-sibling-esque and he thought Andrew and Neil's relationship was gross bc

a) my brother is kissing someone?? Gross!!

b) neil isn't trustworthy and their relationship came on at a really vulnerable time for andrew

c) andrew so obviously loves neil and he's never loved me like that

Part of what I love so much about the monsters is that they’re not perfect victims. They’re not abuse survivors who prettily cry and sometimes have nightmares but are otherwise golden children. They’re flawed and they have terrible coping mechanisms. They make rash decisions and some have little to not self preservation. Their trauma and how they cope with it hurts other people around them. They’re not perfect, not by a long shot but they are realistic. They’re the personification of some of the grimiest parts of being a victim. The monsters are some of my favourite characters because I can relate to them. They’re survivors but they’re still victims. People often forget that abuse victims don’t get to move on as easily as you think they should. For some people that darkness lingers in the corners of their soul and it takes a lot to get rid of it. I love the monsters because they accurately portray imperfect victims and there’s not enough of that representation in media.

Imagine if Aaron was the twin whom appeared more like tilda (only further mirroring them through his addiction) and Andrew looked like their father? Who LEFT Aaron (and tilda I guess) so that he never got to know him, just like Andrew . Who Aaron prob feels like he never really got to know either.

btw, Aaron Bushnell spent the months leading up to his death posting shit like this:

Hamas apologia, reveling in the deaths on 10/7, claiming “there are no Israeli ‘civilians’” and calling Israeli existence inherently genocidal.

so no, I don’t give a shit if I “disrespect his legacy” or whatever. I fully believe every death is a tragedy, including his—he has my pity for being radicalized in such a self-destructive way—but to extend any further respect than that to an atrocity apologist like him would be to spit on the graves of all those murdered on 10/7.

Bushnell wanted Israelis to be ethnically cleansed. he wanted the mass slaughter of Jews. I think the dissonance & self-hatred he expressed in saying he deserves to be killed as a colonizer himself is a huge part of what led him to kill himself rather than be a living advocate. this is what comes of this ideology: death.

he craved violence, and in the end, he got it. that is a tragedy. I can only be grateful that he didn’t take anyone else with him.
