Reminder that AAPI voters voted for Obama in the same numbers they voted for Reagan at the height of the Cold War. All it takes is voter outreach.

44,000 women of color had a planning call on zoom last night. they are jumping in big time
+
The base and the grassroots
If one of Joe Biden’s perceived weaknesses was with the traditional Democratic base, the response to Harris’s call to arms could allay a great deal of those fears.
I watched with satisfaction as a zoom call for Black women—the party’s most reliable voters—to mobilize for Harris grew from a planned 1,000 people, then swelled to 20,000, then 30,000, before topping out at more than 40,000 people according to attendees and raising a reported $1.5 million.
The labor unions began moving quickly, too. By Sunday evening, the American Federation of Teachers had endorsed Harris, as had the powerful SEIU, or Service Employees International Union, which represents 1.9 million workers and is key to victory in the swing state of Nevada.
Progressive PACs also announced their support. Three of them representing AAPI, Black and Latino voters—AAPI Victory Fund, The Collective PAC and Latino Victory Fund—issued a joint statement of endorsement, which carries significant symbolic value.
The Human Rights Campaign, on whose national board I serve and which is the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, mobilizing millions of equality voters across critical battleground states, came out yesterday evening with our own endorsement of Kamala Harris for President.
And among Gen Z voters, there is a finally a palpable excitement for a candidate who is far more relatable, hip and with it, who doesn’t carry the same political baggage around Israel and Gaza that Joe Biden does. Harris and her team are comfortable with digital media. Within moments of her announcement of her candidacy, the artist Charli XCX posted, “Kamala is Brat”—a tweet that has been viewed 21 million times with a quarter of a million likes, and Harris responded by branding the Kamala HQ account with Brat colors.
And on Sunday, Act Blue logged an eye-popping estimated $68.3 million in new donations for Harris for President. This comes as welcome news after fundraising dried up sharply following questions over Biden’s continued viability as a candidate.

These are four of the surrogates that we plan to lean on heavily during the campaign. We’ve assigned surrogates to various regions and marked them as main or back-up, but both will be leaned on in ways that speaks to the strengths of the surrogate.
Native Heartland (OK, NM, CO)
Secretary Deb Haaland—the first Native American woman to serve as a Cabinet Secretary, leading the Department of the Interior, Deb Haaland is a trailblazer for Indigenous rights and environmental justice. Her work to protect public lands, promote renewable energy, and advocate for Native American communities aligns perfectly with the Harris-Walz campaign’s commitment to environmental stewardship and social equity. Haaland’s unique perspective and leadership make her a critical surrogate in states with significant Indigenous populations, such as the heartland.
Iowa
Main: Mayor Connie Boesen—a strong advocate for local economic development, public safety, and community engagement. Her leadership in a key battleground state like Iowa makes her an important surrogate for the Harris-Walz campaign. Boesen’s ability to connect with rural and urban voters alike, combined with her focus on practical, community-driven solutions, helps to bolster the campaign’s efforts in the heartland of America.
Back-up: US Representative Sharice Davids—one of the first Native American women elected to Congress and the first openly LGBTQ+ person to represent Kansas, Sharice Davids embodies the diversity and progress that our campaign champions. Her work on healthcare, education, and economic development reflects the campaign’s priorities, and her ability to connect with voters across a wide spectrum of backgrounds is invaluable. Davids’ presence on the campaign trail in the Midwest helps to strengthen the campaign’s appeal to both Native American communities and working-class voters.
Far West (AK, HI, Pacific Territories)
Senator Mazie Hirono—a powerful advocate for immigration reform, women's rights, and social justice. Her outspoken leadership in the Senate and her commitment to progressive values resonate with our campaign’s vision for an inclusive America. Hirono’s deep connection to the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, along with her focus on civil rights, makes her an essential voice in mobilizing these key voter groups, particularly in states like Hawaii and our Pacific Territories.

Billionaire dilettantes vs good Democrats
Tumblr media
Andrea Salinas should be a shoe-in to win the midterm election to represent Oregon’s 6th District; the Democratic candidate is facing an extraordinarily weak Republican challenger: the millionaire perennial also-ran, philanderer, drunk driver and oxy trafficker Mike Erickson:
https://prospect.org/politics/why-oregons-herschel-walker-could-win-mike-erickson-andrea-salinas/
Erickson claims to be tough on crime and anti-abortion, but when he plead guilty to a DUI, he managed to wriggle out of charges for the unprescribed Oxy the cops found (his defense boils down to “I wasn’t charged with possession so shut up about it or I’ll sue”):
https://oregoncapitalchronicle.com/2022/10/06/oregon-congressional-candidate-mike-erickson-sues-opponent-andrea-salinas-over-negative-ad/
Erickson also gave his girlfriend $300 and drove her to a “doctor’s office” that was actually an abortion clinic (his defense is that he didn’t know what kind of doctor he took his girlfriend to, that he was “dating” her but she wasn’t his “girlfriend,” and he didn’t know she was pregnant) (she contradicts this account):
https://jezebel.com/an-oregon-republican-candidate-is-also-lying-about-havi-1849642337
Erickson has a long history of running unsuccessfully for office. As the “Herschel Walker of Oregon,” he should be trailing substantially, despite his lavish spending. But he and Salinas are neck-and-neck:
https://prospect.org/politics/why-oregons-herschel-walker-could-win-mike-erickson-andrea-salinas/
That’s not because Andrea Salinas is a bad candidate! Far from it. She’s a veteran of the staff of the beloved Senator Harry Reid, a strong pro-union candidate who has been incredibly effective as an Oregon state legislator. She has lots of grassroots support, too — she defeated her primary challenger by 20 points.
So what’s holding Salinas back? Well, beating that primary challenger: Carrick Flynn, a first-time candidate who was propelled by $10m in attack-ads against Salinas, with all that money coming from crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried’s super PAC, Protect Our Future.
SBF also gave $6m to the House Majority PAC in return for the party’s endorsement of Flynn, despite the weakness of Flynn’s candidacy, and the PAC then laundered $1m of that money into Flynn’s campaign. Another “pop up” super PAC, Justice Unites Us, came into existence to funnel $50k more from Protect Our Future into Flynn’s candidacy, then went dormant.
Justice Unites Us co-opted social justice language, claiming to be an “AAPI-led and run organization” with the mission of “mobiliz[ing] the United States’ most rapidly growing voter bloc and help create progressive change across the country” — high-minded rhetoric that disguised the group’s role as a cutout for more billionaire dark-money. NBC fell for the scam and published a glowing account of Justice Unites Us, after they had ceased activity:
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2022-election/democrats-target-asian-americans-new-super-pac-rcna29875
Now, Salinas — who drubbed Flynn and his “effective altruism” campaign — is fighting Erickson with a huge disadvantage. Her grassroots, small-dollar donor supporters already spent themselves dry fending off a billionaire’s plaything, and now she faces a corrupt, hypocritical millionaire who is flooding the field with his own fortune.
Despite Salinas’s victory, many voters believe that the race is between Flynn and Erickson, because all of those millions spent on Flynn ads gave him name recognition, as The American Prospect*’s Austin Ahlman discovered when he visited the district.
The problem of wealthy dilettantes draining the coffers of good Democratic candidates is not unique to the Oregon’s 6th race. Across the country and up and down the ticket, the popular, progressive candidates who won their primaries are going into the general having drained their supporters’ discretionary savings in fending off unpopular rich cranks who decided to buy themselves elected office:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/02/oligarchs-r-us/#hooray-for-slugwell
I just sent Salinas’s campaign $50. If you can afford to give, I hope you will, too. Salinas is a great candidate, an experienced lawmaker, and has a great platform. Her opponent, Erickson isn’t just a MAGA hypocrite — he’s a danger to the nation. If he gets into office, we will all be worse off.
