hii! i was wondering what formatting you use to post your comics here? they look great!
Thanks! Formatting... that's a very vague word. 😅 If you're talking about image size and dimensions, I do my Infinity Train comics at 1920x[panel height] 300dpi and the Nimona ones at A4 size (plus print bleed) 350dpi, exported at 1920x2714.
Does that answer your question at all?
#I want to get into printed comics#so I'm starting to work in print format (A4)#they're easier to put in portfolios when asking for reviews#currently my portfolio has a few pages of CTH strips sized to print 2-3 on a page#very awkward#asks

Heavenly Body
Minthara in armor. Period.
Thanks @bloodpraxis for bullying me into drawing a proper armor and XPPen for giving me a chance to try their XPPen Deco Pro Gen2 ♡✧( ु•⌄• ) You can can use 'mynonjo5' to get an extra 5% off on the products in XPPen official store.
Below is my personal review of my new tablet (and a pic of my humble workspace)✌(‘ω’✌)
XPPen Deco Pro Gen2
A sponsoring moment first ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
You can use 'mynonjo5' to get an extra 5% off on the products in XPPen official store. US store CA store
The size: I went for the XLW — the largest size and let me tell you, it's sure is one big boy. It's like working on an A3 sized paper and the tablet takes up a big chunk of your workplace. But hey, that extra space means you can really let loose with your arm swings for some dynamic lines. If that's too much to handle, don't sweat it, opt for the smaller sizes like the MW (A5) and LW (A4).
X-Remote Control: The X-Remote Control might be my favourite feature. With programmable buttons, it's a lifesaver for us shortcut maniacs. No need to reach for the keyboard any longer. The remote also works even without turning on the tablet, which is quite handy.
The Pen Case: This thing is metal, sleek, and just plain cool. Keeps your pen safe when traveling about.
The Pen: Eight extra nibs in two different types? I don't think I'd have to worry about replacements anytime soon. And with the eraser end, one less keyboard shortcut is needed.
Bluetooth: Okay, so I'm usually all about cables for a stable connection. But with my table looking like a cable jungle, Bluetooth has been a lifesaver.
Overall, loving my Deco Pro Gen2 experience so far!

𝐬𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬 finding an obscure otome game on the internet wasn't on your 2024 bingo card, but with only the cover art and no blurb, you decided to give it a shot. it looked promising enough at the start, and nothing could go wrong, right? ✩

─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───
You liked to think that you were an otome game expert. Even if it sounded… strange to the everyday person, it was your niche and who didn't have an out there hobby anyway? Supply and demand, right?
So you’d pride yourself on your extensive, and completely useless, knowledge regarding fictional pixel romance.
That was how you found yourself here, at two in the morning researching a really obscure listing of a dating game that you had never heard of before. There was no description, release date or year, and no mention of a publisher found anywhere.
A Bizarre Dating Adventure.
That was all you had to work with, the title of this so called game. There wasn't even an item picture uploaded. Spending a whopping thirty minutes gave way to absolutely nothing and you weren't going to lie, you were pretty miffed about it. A piece of so-called lost media just happened to be put on sale on a totally legitimate looking website at the grand old price of.. wait, $10?
Now you were intrigued. An otome game for that price? There was no way this was authentic when games of this nature cost upwards of $50 to $80.
With a few more clicks on your laptop, you came to find out there was free shipping included as well.
That was surely safe, you thought to yourself in your sleep deprived mind.
You faltered for a moment before closing the tab, shutting off your device and promptly collapsing onto your bed for the sleep your body craved hours ago.
Damn, you’ll feel that tomorrow.
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
The following days were mundane at best, your mind drifting to the odd listing of the game. The circumstances alluded you, and during your free time, you found yourself naturally going back to it. Exploring any and every corner you could, even going on the occasional forum. You didn't get much information however, and it seemed the more you looked, the more elusive it seemed.
How was it that no one else seemed to know of this game? Surely that wasn't possible.
It became more and more tempting to just shot the odds and buy it outright and trying it yourself, but you were still apprehensive.
The website didn't do any favours for itself, looking like it hadn't been updated since 2009, and there didn't seem to be any reviews on the authentication of the site either.
You groaned, sinking back into your chair and staring at your ceiling. Closing your eyes, you cautiously rubbed at them, deep in thought as the listing displayed at attention on your screen.
With a deep inhale you leaned forward again, focused as your hand hovered over the trackpad. The inner debate followed; curiosity killed the cat…
but satisfaction brought it back.
Super sketchy website, but if you played it smart, you wouldn't need to give out too much of your personal information. Plus it was dirt cheap for what it claimed it was.
‘Fuck it’, with a click and a few taps of your keyboard filling the otherwise silent bedroom, you received a congratulatory email and in red capital letters were the words ‘SOLD’ on the now ended post.
And so, you were now the future owner of the enigmatic video game, and if you so happened to be scammed… rest in peace that ten bucks.
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
You were honestly pleasantly, and weirdly, surprised at how quickly your package arrived. Didn't you just order this thing yesterday? The no bigger than A4 sized parcel sat at your doorstep in a white bubble mailer, perched upright. The keys jingled in your hand as you bent down to pick it up, purse falling forward slightly in an uncomfortable manner. Your mood was already soured from the days events, and any little inconvenience had grated you. You were about to roughly shove your bag back and open your door when you realised there was no label stuck to your package. You flipped it over, only to find the same blank space.
That's definitely not worrying at all.
You jammed the key inside your door and forced your way inside with an all too loud slam. You knew you shouldn't have trusted that damn website. Now some axe murdering lunatic knows where you live! You could feel the nerves wash over you, and your heart began to palpitate. Twisting the deadbolt lock on your door gave you some sense of security, but it did little to appease you.
Tossing your keys and bag on your coffee table, you sat into your much too old and worn out lounge as you ripped the parcel open.
Discarding the plastic wrapping, you’d clean it up later, you found that inside was a small case with what you suspected was the game. There was nothing of note on the back, no text, rating, or any other information found. Turning it over, you saw the images of various male characters decorating the cover.
These must be the leads.
You glanced over each of the men as your fingers traced their features.
Four blondes, one brunette, one with dark blue hair, another with dark purple, one with a green undercut, a redhead and at the center was a brooding character with black hair and a tipped down cap.
What an interesting cast.
You couldn't help but wonder what made the creator go for ten different routes. It wasn't like that was unheard of, but it was quite a larger cast of romantic interests. In the midst of your thoughts, you felt a chill.
Like you were being watched.
Walking over to your kitchen window you looked outside, hand still holding onto the keep case. You stayed there for a few seconds, looking at the now setting sun against the trees. The orange glow offers little warmth within your small apartment. You gaze back down at the cover art, focusing on the dark, capped character. You didn't know why, but there was something unsettling about them. The longer you looked, the more the feeling began to fester. Gently facing it down on the marble counter, you headed into your bedroom to shower and change; hopeful that a new set of clothes and washing the day's grime away would lighten your mood.
Spoiler alert, it didn't.
Clad in only a towel, you went back into the kitchen to get a drink, throat parched and getting dry. You drank the cool beverage as your eyes began to wander back to the faced down disc. You still felt unexplainably wary, but it didn't feel so bad in that moment.
Gosh, you were such an idiot, who gets freaked over plastic?
You took the few steps towards it and turned it back over again. Tapping your fingers against the countertop in thought you wondered if you should actually play the game. It's highly possible it was just some kind if virus ready to wipe your entire harddrive, but your curiosity was getting the better of you.
You really needed to see what this was, consequences be damned!
Deciding that you’ll use your old high school laptop, you headed back to the bedroom to change into comfortable clothing. You found a pair of old white, cotton shorts and your well loved gray t-shirt that was much too big for you, left behind by a long forgotten ex. You couldn't even remember his name, or maybe you didn't want to remember. He was an ex for a reason, but the shirt sure was comfortable and his loss for leaving it with you. The only scent lingering on it was your own, so by definition and for all intents and purposes, it was yours.
Placing the game on your desk, you went rummaging around your room for the laptop.
Searching high and low; under your bed and in the wardrobes, resulted in nothing. You spend a good twenty minutes before checking the drawers of your desk and finding it hidden under stacks of scrap bits of paper in the bottom drawer. How cliché, and of course it was there.
Agitated, you moved your current laptop away and plugged in the old tried and true. It got you through high school, so hopefully it’ll make it through this.
Though you had hoped inside it wasn't a dud, as you began to feel sentimental about the outdated electronic.
If it did, you'd think about setting aside the money to have it fixed, even if it wasn't worth it - and it most definitely wouldn't be worth it.
You waited a couple of minutes for the thing to boot up, dusting off the slight dirt that accumulated from its lack of use. The age of the laptop was clear as you heard the fan blare to life.
Would it even be able to run the thing? There's no way you'd risk your actual computer on this…
Once deemed ready enough, you pressed down on the disc drive a couple of times, using much more than necessary force on the last push when the reader wouldn't open.
You waited impatiently as it closed with a quiet click, tracing your finger over the trackpad as the cursor moved violently across the screen.
You kept waiting… and waiting… and waiting… until….
Black.
The screen had shut off, and no amount of pressing the power button, force restarting the laptop or even hitting it did anything.
“You’ve got to be kidding me!” the disbelief and anger present in your tone as you plugged the charger cable in and out of the port.
You weren't entirely surprised it was a scam, a virus now killing your laptop, but that didn't mean you weren't any less pissed.
Yeah you were lucky it was an old laptop, anything on it long since gone when the thing was reset before you graduated, but still…
What a waste of a laptop and the ten dollars spent on a useless thing. On the off chance that the laptop's hardware was too old to run it, you couldn't even get the disc back unless you wanted to pry the drive reader open and damage it further.
With a huff you slammed the laptop shut, grabbing your phone and laying down in your bed. You’d figure out what to do when you had time, but you were too upset to deal with your broken device now.
At least you had the sense to use an old laptop with no data. Gotta take those silver linings.
To lift your spirits, you ordered some takeaway, eagerly awaiting to stuff your face full of the greasy food. After the later half of the day, you felt like you deserved it, and the knock on your door couldn't come soon enough.
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
Switching off your television, you reached beside you and tapped on your phone screen to check the time.
10:34pm.
You debated whether you did want to sleep now, but your body decided to answer for you as you let out a loud yawn.
Your lounge was pretty comfortable right now, but after previous experiences, you'd definitely be feeling it in the morning.
The longer you stayed, the more difficult it would be to leave so you quickly got up, threw away the rubbish from your order and went on to do your nightly routine.
After the final step of brushing your teeth, you went to bed, flicking off the bedroom light before you looked towards your desk. Your laptop illuminating a glow along the edge.
Well that's suspicious… that's weird…
You shook your head off the image and voice of Cardi B and slowly sat down at your desk. Tentatively reaching out and opening the laptop you were met with a title screen.
A Bizarre Dating Adventure.
A deep blue background with the words in a hot pink gradient that faded to white. Deep violet coloured roses garnished the sides as different hues of purple petals fell from the top of your screen.
A Bizarre Dating Adventure, that was the name of the game from the listing, wasn't it?
Absentmindedly, your middle finger moved across the trackpad, white sparkles glittering off the cursor with every motion.
Surely a few minutes wouldn't hurt right? Just to get a feel and understanding of the game.
Small, white text slowly flashed underneath the title text reading ‘PRESS SPACE TO START.’
“Here goes nothing.” you murmured, as the screen faded to black, shrouding your entire room in darkness as well.
After a few seconds of nothing, you became apprehensive. You silently prayed that it didn't conk out on you again. There was no way you’d be teased like this.
It felt like a minute before the black screen started to light up again imperceptibly, a slight purple tinge colouring against the blackness. More white text appeared.
>> ‘HELLO’
You awaited the continuation, but nothing else had occurred, the bold letters staring at you. You clicked all over the screen and tapped enter, but there was still nothing. On a whim, you ran your hand over your keyboard to see it typed into the screen, right underneath the greeting.
How peculiar.
You held backspace to remove what was a mess of letters and numbers before typing back a ‘HI’ and hitting enter.
>> ‘ARE YOU THE NEW STUDENT?’
New student? Was this game set in a school?
> NEW STUDENT?
>> ‘AT SWF UNIVERSITY’
At least it wasn't in high school, thank goodness. You’d be damned to face another high school otome game. Figuring this was how the game went, but deciding to see what would happen you typed,
> NO
You tried to hit enter, but nothing happened. I guess it wouldn't accept that answer. You deleted the text before following what you assumed to be the correct response,
> YES
>> WELL, AREN’T YOU A SIGHT FOR SORE EYES
The text response was different now, a yellow instead of the earlier white. You felt a shiver run up you, looking behind at your empty room. You sensed that something was wrong, yet you didn't know why.
>> WHAT’S WRONG? SCARED?
Okay this wasn't funny, and this disc was obviously some kind of troll or some deep web, tracking crap. At minimum it was designed to scare you and at most… well you didn't want to think about that.
> A LITTLE
You don't know why you decided to be somewhat honest, but something was telling you that it would be better than lying. Not like it mattered much.
>> HMM, YOU SHOULD BE
You kept rereading the text before the screen flashed with your name, repeating over and over and over again.
Fuck that!
You unplugged the charger, covering your room, once again in darkness. Your breathing became laboured, as your heart beat thundered furiously in your chest, threatening to explode. That most definitely was some type of tracking, data hacking bullshit! Fuck, fuck, fuck!
What were you supposed to do now?! Call the police? Move? You were only kind of kidding about being sent the disc by an axe murderer, but it was now a very real possibility.
You tried in vain to calm down, tears forming at the corner of your eyes. This was so stupid! So completely, utterly and devastatingly s, t, u, p, i, d! You closed the lid and shoved it back into the drawer. It gave you some semblance of safety. Tomorrow you’d go far away and toss it in a random dumpster. To hell with sentimentality, that laptop was now dead to you.
You wished it would've worked earlier, at least then you would've been able to dispose of it. There's no way you were leaving your unit now at this hour.
Maybe you shouldn't throw it away and instead give it to the proper authorities? But if it was just some troll, you'd either be laughed at out of the station, or berated for wasting their time with nonsense.
You triple checked your deadbolt and closing every curtain, also ensuring that every window was sealed shut and locked.
Retreating back to your room you hid under the covers, the fluffy security net doing little to curb the anxiety that was manifesting inside.
You were surprised to feel yourself growing drowsier, the cute cat compilation video that you put on was only 6 minutes in.
You fell asleep shortly after that, your phone showing a ginger cat jumping off a shed roof and face planting into the concrete.
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
You woke up with a start, sitting up as you gasped for breath. You could feel the slight sweat covering your body, a stuffiness surrounding you as you attempted to slow down your breathing. You looked around the room, a new panic forming as you saw the furniture and belongings of someone who was definitely not you.
Your room didn't look like this! Neither was that desk, or that chair! These sheets weren't yours either.
You closed your eyes as your breathing picked up again, thinking of what to do next before your phone went off with a ding.
Reaching down, you unlocked your phone screen as the words ‘A BIZARRE DATING GAME’ faded into view.
Uhm…

Alright. It's here.
REVIEW OF THE KILLER is a (mainly spoiler free) zine review featuring commentary, analysis, comics, and various evil activities. It released on my itch.io page and will be free for anyone to download, as well as a convenient reader embedded in the page itself. It is releasing alongside the steam version of Anthology Of The Killer by @myfriendpokey.
It is available to print in both a4 and letterhead format, in color and B&W. All of these will be available in 600 or 300 PPI (as disgustingly high as Itch will allow) as well as regular old, web and storage friendly formats. I recommend vibrant pink and canary paper for greyscale copies. It is free to distribute as you please.
If you have liked any of the art I've done so far, please share this anywhere and everywhere you feel charitable to do so.
I hope you enjoy. I am always hoping you enjoy.

"This isn't a game about being a superstar. This isn't a game about championships. This isn't even a game about winning. It's a game about bleeding. Bleeding for the things you care about. Cause that's what I've been doing all my life and I'm not done bleeding yet."
Extract from "Looking Up at the Lights", and essay by Kayla Dice
Finished a photoshoot for Transgender Deathmatch Legend II yesterday. The book is going to be full of violent and stylish photos, mixed in with gnarly textures and in-universe logos and designs for various characters.
The book will be presented in A4 landscape with horizontal wiro-binding. Each crawl will have all the points set out in a single landscape page with the map and other illustration on the above page.
(I'm also pricing up a special boxset version of the game, coming with some play aids, cards, a token, and an exciting supplement.)
I think I've written something really good and I hope this game delivers (both to the audience, and I guess in a sense for me, after everything I've put in.)
If you have an interview podcast I'd love to come on it. If you're interested in playing a session of TDL2 I'm ready to facilitate that (either for streaming or if you want to review the game and see how it plays).
Please follow the BackerKit page. At 100 followers I'll release the games cover.
I'll be sharing more previews soon; looks at layout, essays, previews of maps and scenarios, the online play stuff once I've set that up and more.
If you're excited about the game please tell people about it. Word of mouth can be the ultimate difference maker for me.
#indie ttrpg#game design#ttrpg#tdl2#feel i could make a kinda pretentious observation about how I'm in this game in mind and body#and I probably will do that soon#but for now Ill leave it

Ghost!Steve Harrington x Witch!Reader
Series Masterlist
500 words
“Can I hear them?”
Steve’s been watching over your shoulder as you type up a review of a band from upstate. Reading along as the black ink stamps into the paper with each clack of your typewriter.
You wondered how he didn’t get bored. Surely, you were one of the least interesting witches in the coven to follow around day-to-day. You weren’t used to entertaining, and you rarely practised witchcraft outside of your daily rituals – although he’d watch that intently too, asking about all the different ingredients you’d steep in your tea and why continuously getting the Ace of Cups card in your tarot spread was bothering you.
But he was still here, and you were still wary of why that was – both spiritually and physically – why you?
“Uh, sure.” You click your Walkman, taking out the cassette when it pops up and move over to your stereo. You watch as Steve reads over what you’d written again while the first track fills the room, his tongue digging into his lower lip in concentration.
“That’s good. What you’ve written is like, what it sounds like.” He winces at his inability to articulate, but you get what he means. The compliment makes your shoulders hunch.
“Thanks.”
A knock at the front door of your cottage pulls you away, and you ignore the tingling in your arm as you pass the ghost.
“Hey.” Your fellow coven member Kelsey smiles at your appearance, holding out a thick A4 piece of paper towards you, “Essie made this painting for you, but she was too shy to show you so I volunteered to bring it ov–“ she stops talking when she notices something over your shoulder, then leans in to whisper, “You have a ghost?”
You follow her line of sight to Steve who smiles at the both of you, offering a wave from where he’s standing further in the house.
“Wait, you can see him too?” You turn back to Kelsey who nods, eyes still trained on him. “Huh, I guess he really isn’t here because of me then. He kind of just popped up a few days ago. Would he have anything to do with you?”
She shakes her head, frowning at the way Steve is staring at you like you invented tight, dark-wash jeans.
“Fuck, well if you hear of anyone missing a spirit let me know.” You look down at the colourful portrait she handed you, “And tell Essie thanks. It’s beautiful as always.”
“Will do.” She turns away slowly and you hear her release a deep sigh as you close the door.
Steve follows you as you walk into the kitchen, admiring the portrait of you with crossed arms as you stick it onto the fridge.
“Pretty.” He mutters.
“I know, she’s so talented.”
He rubs the back of his neck before taking a step closer, chest almost close to touching your back if it were possible. “I didn’t really mean the art.”
You turn your head to see a shy smirk on his face, eyes transfixed on you. You roll your eyes, trying to hide the heat creeping into your skin. Who the hell flirts this much when they’re dead? You’re not even used to the alive ones doing it to you.
You shake your head, trying to rid yourself of his spell if you can’t his spirit, and move back to your typewriter.
Steve settles back into his place over your shoulder, nodding along to the music as the words flow from your handwritten notes to the page in front of you.

Thunder Road
Prompts E2: "Oh, Oops!" and A4: "Snowstorm" with genderbent PWHL Cubs for @oknutzy-week-2024's Day 3 :) Characters belong to @lumosinlove! Let's go lesbians let's go!
Light chatter passed back and forth across the lounge. Every once in a while, when someone was brave enough to cross the canyon with a smile and an introduction, the middle strengthened for as long as it took to make polite small talk before falling quiet again.
It was…tricky. Minnesota fought hard. Not dirty—it would almost be better if they did, then maybe the New York team wouldn’t still be smarting with their first clean loss of the season—but with teeth and claws undoubtedly out. Their captain had been brutal on the ice, polite and reserved off it; with Potter and Lupin at the wings, their line had consistently put New York through their paces.
Safe to say, Leo wasn’t looking forward to reviewing tape the next morning.
It wasn’t all bad, though. The bliss of professional hockey had yet to dim; Leo wasn’t sure it ever would. Some days, she still woke up thinking it was all a dream. That instead of packing her practice bag and greeting her new roommate, she’d spend the day scrolling LinkedIn’s barista section and signing up for local women’s rec leagues on the side.
Some days, all she could do was take her beautiful, beautiful sea-green jersey out and lay it on the bed beside her to remind herself it was real. Trace her name in bold white letters lining the back. Run her hands over her number, the same since she first put on a blocker and felt something inside her sing.
Representing New York in goal for the inaugural season of the Professional Women’s Hockey League, we are proud to select Leo Knut…
Leo let out a shaky breath and stood.
Hi, you must be Leo. I’m Finn, Finn O’Hara. C’mon in, your room’s just down the hall.
Black and Lupin were on the opposite side of the room. Lupin’s faded red Wisconsin hoodie was pulled down over her hands while she lounged sideways on one of the many armchairs. Black looked as imposing as ever even in a simple Minnesota t-shirt, seated on the floor by the couch Potter claimed.
Hey, Knutty. Couldn’t sleep? Me neither. This game’s gonna be off the rails. Did you know I went to college with Tremblay? She’s killer. I brought cocoa, if you want some. Helps me calm down.
Finn was far away, chatting happily with one of Minnesota’s defensemen. Leo sort of wished she had gone with Finn in the first place, just so she wouldn’t be left to her own devices. These people were strangers to her in everything but newsprint.
Carefully, she balanced two lemonades in one hand and two cookies in the other. She could do this. She could be brave.
“H—”
Thunder rattled the windows of the lounge. The lights flickered—a wave of surprise rolled through the room, and Logan Tremblay jumped hard enough Leo nearly fumbled the lemonade right onto herself.
“Oh, oops!”
Green eyes stuck her in place. “Knut.”
Tremblay’s voice was smoother than it sounded in her interviews. Two thick braids crowned her head and ran down just past her shoulders.
Leo took a deep breath, and smiled. “Call me Leo.”
“Leo.” Softer, now, too. She was careful with Leo’s name. Lay-oh.
“Cookie?”
“Quoi?”
Leo held out her peace offering, placing her thumb over one of the cookies to reserve it for herself. The storm had hit them dead-on before they had been released to the bus and she had seen firsthand how hard Logan played. She couldn’t be the only one starving.
“Oh.” Tremblay sounded surprised. The side of her mouth pulled in a quick smile as she took the cookie from Leo’s palm, and widened when Leo nudged her other hand with the lemonade. “Merci, that’s very kind of you.”
“They said they’d have sandwiches soon, but I’m kind of dying here.”
Tremblay huffed a laugh. It was nearly silent, but honest. No wonder she and Finn had been friends. “Me, too. Something tells me DoorDash isn’t working top speed tonight.”
“Nah, probably not,” Leo agreed, grinning into her flimsy plastic cup. The room seemed easier now; the vise around her chest, looser.
“I’m Logan, by the way.” Tremblay shoved the last of her cookie into her mouth and dusted her hand off on her sweatpants.
“Nice to meet you.”
Her hand was coarse against Leo’s, callused and warm. Smaller than Leo’s own, but broad like the rest of her. Logan licked a few loose crumbs from the pad of her thumb and had just opened her mouth to speak when lightning flashed outside—a blur of red and gray barreled between them.
“Thirty-five minutes, and I don’t even get a hello?” Finn scolded through a blinding, brilliant smile. Her cheeks were flushed, though Leo hadn’t seen any alcohol about. She gave one of Logan’s braids a jaunty yank. “You dick.”
“I was busy,” Logan insisted without an ounce of real heat.
“Sulking, maybe.” Finn gave her an unreadable look, something playful and yet oddly intimate. Leo felt a little like she was intruding until Finn turned to her and beamed. “I see you’ve met my fabulous roommate.”
Logan blinked. “Oh?”
“You’re much better than she was,” Finn informed Leo in a stage-whisper. “No towels on the floor, a clean kitchen—oh, yeah, Tremzy, she knows how to cook.”
“I can cook,” Logan scoffed.
“That’s a lie and we both know it.” Finn slung an arm around her shoulders to tug the other braid. Logan pulled a face, but made no attempt to move. The arm stayed when Finn looked back up at Leo. “What was it you made the other day, Le? The beans and rice thing?”
“Jambalaya.” Her mother’s recipe, a fact Finn had loved. She liked it when Leo made food from home, even when the most mild spice level made her whole face turn red.
“It was so good. She shared some, I was so lucky.”
Leo felt her face heat and ducked her head. Finn was so free with compliments that it was starting to become a problem. She had told herself she’d be careful. This opportunity was too precious to risk—this team, this city, this game. There was already talk of expanding the league. Leo needed her contract to be first on the list with no complications holding her back.
That meant not noticing the fluff of auburn bedhead in the morning or sleepy brown eyes in the evening. It meant shrugging off compliments with placid smiles, no matter how much Finn’s earnest appreciation made her melt. Neither of them were guaranteed a spot in New York next year. One perfect season of one perfect roommate would be more than enough.
“Right, Le?”
“Hmm?” Leo felt her heart stutter. “Sorry, what?”
“You get big storms back home,” Finn repeated, unfazed.
“Oh, yeah, sure. Hurricanes, all that.” She winced internally and soothed the burn of awkwardness with the last swig of her drink.
“I don’t like them,” Logan said, waving a hand. One side of her nose wrinkled with displeasure. Leo wished she had left herself more lemonade. “The rain, fine, but the rest of it…blegh.”
“You should come back with us tonight,” Finn said suddenly.
“Quoi?”
“What?” Leo asked at the same time.
Finn was already nodding. “No, yeah, it’s perfect. The roads aren’t good, but we can take the subway back to Knutty and I’s place. We’ll drop you off at the hotel tomorrow morning.”
Logan shifted, the plastic cup crinkling in her hand. “I don’t know…”
“It’s late, Lo.” The nickname gave Leo pause. She saw Logan go still, too. Finn’s eyes had softened. “Come back with us. We’ll heat up some leftovers and fuckin’, I don’t know, watch a movie. It’ll be good to catch up.”
Logan’s gaze darted around the room, where the teams had slowly begun mingling. Lupin was telling some story about a roadie and a snowstorm and a cooler full of beer and sandwiches, a bit shy under half the room’s attention. Even Black seemed to be having a nice time listening to her.
“D’accord,” Logan said quietly. She gave another one of her small smiles to Finn and then, inexplicably, to Leo. “Alright, that sounds good. I’m hungry. I can sleep on your couch, or something.”
“We’ll figure it out,” Leo assured her.
--
Logan didn’t sleep on the couch.
When Leo woke the next morning, her first thought was not of problems or compliments or contracts. It was Logan’s loose, braid-crimped hair falling over the opposite end of the couch and the fit of a Mardi Gras 2011 shirt across her shoulders as makeshift pajamas. It was Finn playing music at the lowest setting and the soft spitting of the coffeepot. She would be wearing her glasses and the cotton shorts Leo just couldn’t handle, the ones she had thrown on last night while Leo cued the movie, red hair pulled back into a small ponytail at her nape.
Logan’s ankles were warm on her own. The DVD case was still open on the table in front of them. Leo couldn’t recall falling asleep. But this—this seemed as real as plastic lettering that shone beneath her awed fingertips.
Leo closed her eyes and let drowsiness pull her under. She had no fear of waking again to an empty dream.

Bookbinding Process (1/2): The Wolf Queen, from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
I have a very exciting comission— I’m binding The Wolf Queen, an in-game novel from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I’ve never played the game, but my client told me they enjoy collecting and reading the books in the game. According to the Elder Scrolls wiki, there are apparently 820 of them! I’m binding the one of the longer stories, which is actually broken up into 8 volumes.
In researching, it seems that the volumes seem to take on completely different binding styles, but we agreed on the style shown here. We also decided to condense these volumes into 1 book— the entire story is only about 12k words, and while the handwritten large text works well for reading the story on a small in-game window on your monitor, it’s not really practical for a physical book. That, and even if I were to print these true to size for the game, each volume would still be about 40 pages, which only equates to 10 sheets of folded paper, so it wouldn’t make for a very robust collection on the shelf.
You can see that these books in this game are actually quite weathered, and it seems like all the paper is unevenly torn. If we were to equate Skyrim’s time period with our own based on technology, it’s likely these pages would have been parchment. The in-game textures definitely support this, even for the bindings that seem to be a few centuries ahead of their time.
We agreed that antiqued cotton paper would be a suitable alternative, as enough parchment for this project would run a couple thousand dollars as-is, and I don’t believe I have the equipment necessary to print on it. I needed something with a quick turnaround for this project, so I went with this paper in the ‘Vintage Deckle’ finish in the A4 size. According to one review, it’s also short-grained, so it’s actually ideal for bookbinding.
Typesetting
I’m using Adobe InDesign to typeset this, but it can also be done with Word and other alternatives.
Here’s a guide by ArmoredSuperHeavy on tumblr.
I think Bethesda owns the font used in the Elder Scrolls games, but there is a dupe of it on dafont.com called Cyrodiil. However, it definitely feels and reads more as a modern font; it was designed with readability after all. I’m definitely going for something that feels like a Celtic manuscript, based both on the decorative Celtic knot tooling, and the Gaelic look of the font. I eventually found Kelmscott, which carries the same Gaelic characteristics as Cyrodiil, and is still relatively easy to read, but feels more calligraphic.
I also downloaded Medieval Victoriana for the decorative first letters of each chapter.
To typeset the text, I followed a tutorial article by Grace Fussell and Adobe’s guide for creating book files.
I wanted the text to look dense and almost glyphic, as many old medieval manuscripts do, while still being easy enough to read. I played around with the paragraph tools and eventually settled on this layout. While certainly not all manuscripts have multiple columns, I want this typesetting to really break the boundaries seen in most modern prints of books, so I decided on this two-column format. Some manuscripts keep the text frame smaller and in the center of the page, much like you see in later centuries when the printing area was restricted by a press, but once again, I want to emphasize the look of ‘handwritten’ manuscript, so I made sure to use wide margins.
Some other fun details I added were glyphs at the beginning of each chapter, and surrounding the page numbers.
I exported the file for print with InDesign’s ‘Print Booklet’ feature, with the 2-up perfect bound with a signature size of 8 (2 pieces of paper/4 spreads/8 text pages).
Text Block
Here’s the printed and folded signatures! I’m really pleased with how these came out— it has the exact weathered look I was trying to emulate from in-game. As an added bonus, since the source material wasn’t particularly long, the thickness of the paper (150gsm) gave the text block a good amount of volume.
Out of lack of good online reference, my client ended up sending me photos of the book in-game. I was excited to realize this book seems to be bound on cords or leather straps— kind of difficult to tell from the model. We decided to go with a slit leather strap.
I couldn’t find a great reference image of the stitch for this, but I used the same technique of punching and sewing my signatures as this double cord instructional from The Thames and Hudson Manual of Book Binding.
Endpaper
I definitely wanted to go for a more traditional endpaper, so I looked at what I had in my stash of marbled paper. I was initially drawn to this Renato Crepaldi peackock marble I got from Hollander’s, which has a beautiful red that screams “medieval” to me, but Skyrim is a cold place, so I was also drawn to go for this blizzard-esque marble. Though, I ultimately decided on this dark blue/indigo paper I got from the Paper Source.
I went for the indigo because the protagonist of this novel I’m binding, Potema Septim, the Wolf Queen herself, is associated with the color purple. Since the goal of this binding was to recreate an in-game item as it would be in-game, a bookbinder in Skyrim would also most likely want to make design choices reflecting the contents of this specific book. Or maybe they’d be illiterate and just go for the red. Either way, my client also liked the dark indigo, so that’s what we went with.
This endpaper is the cover weight of De Milo Design’s line of paper called Sustain & Heal. It’s fair trade, handmade in Bangladesh, from jute fibers.
It also has deckled edges, so I made sure to align my cuts to use that, and I tore the rest by hand to keep the natural edges consistent. This is a bit of an unconventional aesthetic choice, but it stemmed from that it’d be odd if the fly leafs were straight cut with the rest of the text block so extremely deckled.
Headbands
Keeping with the purple/indigo/blue theme, I made two-colored headbands around jute cord with DCM embroidery floss in colors 31 and 796. I basically used the technique outlined here. In retrospect though I’d recommend doing a big double endband or something bulky with this paper, since the deckled edges tend to push the endband back towards the spine and hide it.
Please continue reading here!

Darling, I'm Starving & Wrap Your Teeth Around The World by Ethereally, @putsch
My dust jacket bind! Thanks again to both authors for giving me permission to make a fanbinding ❤️
This is a Blue Lock AU where Kunigami and Chigiri go hunting vampires across Meiji-era Japan. The fics are among my favourites, and they were a pleasure to bind.
The authors commissioned this wonderful cover art for their fic, which I knew from the outset I wanted to include. Hence, adventures in DIY dust jacket craft. I printed the front and rear + flaps as separate A4 sheets, cut them to size, then connected them with a spine made from endpaper off-cuts. Really happy with the finish ✨
I kept the book cover itself simple. It's red velour bookcloth with gold HTV for the lettering and AO3 logo. I used strips of the same HTV on the dust jackets to seal the external joints.
One of my favourite things about this bind is the inclusion of this illlustration by fleshcircuits, who kindly gave me permission to include his art! It's spooky and gorgeous, just like the writing.
I actually made three copies of this—one for me, and a copy each for the two authors. I made Putsch's a little after the other two, so I don't have a picture of all three together 🥲 but I like that each copy is similar with slight differences in terms of endpapers and small details.
Technical details:
A5 flat spine casebinding with red faux velour bookcloth (gotta say, love this stuff; I've bought more in red and in black).
I did different sizes of signatures for each bind, but they all clock in at 104 pages. The signatures were trimmed by guillotine.
fleshcircuits' illustration printed on white paper. This has a hinge that I sewed in with the regular signature sheets, along with the corresponding page on the other side of the signature. It didn't align precisely, but I still love how it looks.
Endpapers are from this pack of printed cardstock. Pretty decent quality and a nice weight for endpapers, but note they're completely matte: the "glitter" is printed.
Handsewn headbands.
Homemade dust jacket made from matte photo paper, scrap endpaper and PVA glue—tutorial to follow. I like the detail of having AO3 comments as "reviews" like a traditionally published book.
Fonts used were OldStyle, Fancy Text and Garamond. The title and chapter frames are doctored from a Vecteezy image and a Meiji-ish sample label.
