Turn of the century omegaverse thoughts

Cause I'm a huge fucking history nerd and I was thinking about, what would omegaverse look like at different points in history/how would it effect history, and given the motif of this blog I thought I'd share some from 1900s-1910s.

Note, this is not me romanticising these concepts, just thinking about potential plotlines or ideas that COULD result from omegaverse being part of this point in the human time line, both good, bad, and just weird:

–omega sufferage movement along side women's sufferage

–the overlap between women’s rights movement and the issues of A/B/O hierarchies creating a lot of fuss and questions during the time, especially with news print and communication getting more and more wide spread.

–ex, it being considered ok for an alpha female to dress in men's clothing and do work as the primary breadwinner when her husband or wife is an omega, but what happens when she is with an alpha male who is socially EXPECTED to be the primary bread winner at the time? Is the woman supposed to quit her job and become a house wife upon marriage? She certainly doesn't think so and neither does her husband.

–i feel like the American hierarchy at the time is alpha male>alpha female=beta male>beta female=omega male=omega female.

–omegas using labor unions to fight for equal treatment and pay in new industrial settings.

--factories are hesitant to hire them because fearing their workers will go on heat regularly and slow down production. People having to hide that they are omegas to get work as a result. This was the time period where you could get fired for a work place injury after all.

–people coming to the States for the first time with different cultural expectations for the a/b/o dynamics and getting some culture shock from American life, whether american standards are stricter, less strict, or entirely flipped from their home perspectives.

–along with with the Gibson girl there's also the Gibson boy representing the dainty stereotype of omegas. 

–the new middle class and upper middle class suddenly being targeted by mass production industrial giants advertising new, useless creature comforts to build extravagant and gorgeous nests and dens

–patent medicines that are utterly worthless but advertise to act as heat suppressants, rut control, and to make your scent more appealing to others

–in order to pander to ideals of modernization and “civility�� american upper crusts comparing their a/b/o status to various dog breeds instead of wolves. There's essentially a horoscope of sorts they've come up with to align themselves with specific dog breeds and the stereotypes there off.

– ex: “my father was an alpha bulldog type, and my mother a beta beagle designation, and because I was born on the 3rd Sunday in August as an omega, I am a jack Russell terrier designation.

–people keep harassing Arthur Conan Doyle for Watson and Sherlock’s canonic designation. This is what causes the poor man to lose it and start believing in fairies. 

–omega heat cars on trains for single individuals to hang out in and avoid perverts. Its meant as a kind gesture but instead just ends up playing into puritan culture surrounding omega bodies. 

–as electricity is being installed in more and more homes there's an irrational worry that the electrical circuits in the walls will mess with the cycles of heat and rut among some. 

–its completely unfounded but causes people to resist the switch anyways

–meanwhile there IS evidence that gas based light fixtures DO have negative effects on the body but everyone grew up with them “and I turned out ok so it must be fine”

–advent of widespread vaccines and better standards of sanitation means that entire litters of pups are surviving childhood now

–families that worried to name pups after they were born, as back in their home land it was rare for more than one per litter to survive, suddenly are having miracle litters. Every single pup is ending up getting spoiled by these families who expected the worst.

–new ridiculous electric inventions come out catering to beautification and a/b/o fertility care. One is a body massage device that supposedly increases the chances of having a healthy and fruitful pregnancy….it's essentially a hand held belly rub machine. 

– most of the US was still rural and isolated from the cities at this time. Few had ventured 20 miles from their home town. Rural parents worrying about their omega children marrying people from the city…because of a genuine yet misguided fear of their kids getting so overwhelmed by all the new scents  in the city that they will immediately have a seizure and die. 

–during the turn of the century it was already fairly common for kids to wear gender neutral, play safe clothing like gowns all the way up to 8 years old, so gender neutral clothing being common until a kid presents for the first time.

–classes getting divided into alphas, omegas, and betas in some puritanical schools in order to “protect the children” as the new US mandatory  public school system is getting hammered out

–packs becoming a looser term for more wide social circles rather than relatives or clans due to migration of people both into the nation and throughout. 

–Ex: woman forming packs based on sharing supplies in a new city with each other, or packs surrounding shared interest in activities like sewing or books

–the Boston Red Sox declare themselves a pack one day.

–I feel like a lot of politicians pretend to be alphas for status

–teddy Roosevelt secretly being an omega but nobody realizes this cause he's constantly covered in wood ash and various funk from his game hunting and overtly manly activities. Everyone just assumes he's an alpha between that and his personality.

(Edit: clarification on the last one, this is a joke about how the guy had horrible asthma and other chronic health issues especially while young, which for most people at the time would mean a very short life span, but no one knew because the dude compensated with so much exercise and other extreme health stuff you could do at the time you could not tell. Dude even took a bullet to the chest midway through a speech and then finished said speech. Dude basically made himself a stereotype of an "alpha male")

Day 15. Self sacrifice

The celebrations had been going well. There had not been any bigger problems and the joy and the festive mood from the people of Genosha had been washing through Charles the whole day and there was no way to feel blue because of that. But even more than that, king Erik's genuine smile at him in the mids of their dance had made his heart soar with newfound hope.

Their marriage, arranged as it was, had been an upgrade from Charles' life that far, which while luxarious as an only omega son of a noble family, had been cold and lonely. In Genosha, he had been able to make friends and he was seen more than just a pawn, that was used to seek more power and status.

But it had been clear from the start, that king Erik had not been pleased with the arrangement. The marriage had been strictly political, they hadn't even met each other before the wedding. Charles could clearly remember Erik's eyes that day, distant and cold. He hadn't dared to let his telepathy to even brush against the alpha's mind, he would rather live in ignorance than knowing that his husband despised him.

It had been months since that day and while at the beginning any kind of genuine connection seemed impossible, Charles did't lose hope. And slowly, tentavely, they both had lowered their defences and learned more about each other. And for Erik to smile at Charles so easily today, it seemed that they had come much further than they had even realized.

They were just rerturning to the palace where another crowd of people was waiting for them. The day had been long and Charles' mental shields were somewhat battered, but when his surroundings were this posotive, it didn't bother him much. Their carrige came to a halt and Erik jumped off, before turning to offer his hand for Charles to take. The telepath smiled and took the king's hand, but as he did, he felt a sudden surge of affection that wasn't his own. It was Erik's.

The feeling took him by such a surprise, that he almost fell to the ground as he stepped down from the carrige. Luckily, Erik was there to catch him, his mind alarmed and eyes wide.

"Charles, are you alright?" He asked as his arms stedied the smaller man.

"Yes, yes I'm quite alright. Just lost my footing there for a moment." Charles reassured and laughed off his embarrasment. Erik looked at him for a second longer, doubt creasing his brow, but eventually, he nodded, letting go of Charles. The omega missed the touch as soon as it was gone, but shook it off and walked beside Erik towards the castle.

The crowd was in high spirits and Charles let his power to have a bit more breathing room, soaking all of it in. Happiness, joy and excitement washed over him and made his smile widen. He waved at a small group of children just when he felt something sinister with his telepathy. A one voice that didn't belong. He searched for that mind in the crowd, which wasn't too difficult as it stood out so clearly.

He realised three things about the person who owned that mind. One, he wasn't in the crowd, but in the roof. Two, he was there to kill Erik. Three, he was just about to pull the trigger of his crossbow.

Charles didn't think, he just moved, stepping in front of Erik and just as he saw the king's face turn confused, even annoyed, he felt the pain bloom in his shoulder. He watched as Erik's eyes widened in horror and felt strong arms come to support him while the pain forced him to bend his body. Erik might have said his name, but there were too much screaming and the pain made it hard to think.

"Arrest him!" That he heard, Erik's order booming in his ears. "And get McCoy!"

It registered to Charles only when their surroundings became more dimmer, that they had moved inside the palace. Erik was pulling him along, their footsteps echoing on the stone floor along with their bodyguards'. There was a turmoil under the surface of Erik's mind, but he was solely focused on his goal, to get Charles to Hank's work chamber. He might have said something to Charles, but the other man felt like all energy was being sucked out of his body.

His legs gave up and the last thing he heard was Erik calling his name.

"Charles!" Erik felt how panic tried to grip his mind as his consort sagged in his arms, almost falling to the ground, if not for the alpha's hold on him. He managed to keep his mind clear though, his goal simple. Get Charles to the doctor.

So, he picked the omega up into his arms and carried him the rest of the way. Armando opened the door for them and Erik moved to the room, gently laying Charles down on the patient bed, on his stomach, as the arrow was still stuck on his upper back. The arrow that had been meant for Erik, completely devoid of any metal.

He looked at the other man now, his skin had become pale and his clothes were stained with blood. Erik knew he should try to pull the arrow out and take Charles' jacket, vest and shirt off of him, but his worry of doing something wrong and causing more damage was too great. It felt strange, to feel this unsure of his own actions.

Fortunately, doctor McCoy arrived soon. Erik noticed that he had taken off his shoes, most likely to run faster. The doctor didn't waste any time, rolling his sleeves up and moving to stand beside the bed.

"Did the arrow go completely through?" He asked as he moved.

"No." Erik answered immediately.

"I'll need to push the arrow out in that case. Hold his upper body up for me." Erik did as he was told, appreciating that the doctor didn't bother with formalities.

McCoy pushed the arrow until it went through, then broke it and pulled it out completely from the other side. He put the pieces away on a table before starting to remove the clothes on Charles' upper body.

"I need water and a washing cloth." Hank told and Armando moved to get those.

With nothing else to do, Erik checked the arrow. It was expertly made, its tip was made of stone instead of metal. Erik's power was widely known, so that didn't come as a surprise. The fletching was red and black, that might mean something, like colours of an assassin or a guild, but not nessessarely.

"Oh no..." McCoy's voice made Erik's stomach drop and he turned around to look at the doctor and his husband, who had been turned to lie on his back.

"What?" Erik demanded, stepping closer. "What is it?"

"Poison." The one word made the blood freeze inside Erik's body. No... No it couldn't be. But when he looked at the wound that McCoy had been cleaning from the blood, the veins under the skin around it had turned darker.

Charles was going to die...

No! No, there had to be something they could do.

"Do you know what kind of poison?" Maybe there was a cure. And if McCoy didn't have it, then Erik would go search for it himself.

"I have an idea, but to know for sure I'll need few drops of alpha blood." The doctor informed them and Armando stepped forward, about to offer his own, but Erik alrwady summoned his knife to his hand and pricked his finger with it.

This made the doctor look out of his depth for the first time he had stepped into the room, but he recovered quickly and snatched a small cup from a shelf and let Erik's blood drip into it. No more than five drops, until Hank deemed it enough. He moved to get some of the tainted blood from Charles and added that to the cup too. Next, he stirred the mix by shaking the cup gently, until he poured it on to a small plate. Or more accurately, dropped it on to a plate, as the blood now resembled some kind of budding.

Erik didn't know what he should feel after seeing that, but the doctor's sigh of relief told him enough. Charles would be okay.

They're throwing ideas back & forth for the music videos w their ever talented manager/agent/creative coordinator A!Chrissy, they have a disappointing meeting but when they come back the next day Chrissy has pep in her step & proudly shows them a YouTube video. It's a critique of one of their music videos from their first big break album, it'd been vaguely set in the middle ages/Renaissance, except this person doesn't care abt the music instead they’re observing the costumes, explaining the time period they'd been borrowing from, how the costumes would've been constructed/actually looked during the historic period they'd presented. Then Chrissy shows them a video of this YouTube channel constructing a Victorian opera gown & opera suit. It's a eureka moment as the band realizes where she's going w this, a Victorian vampire is classic! Why not lean into the whole thing? Eddie is quiet as they discuss giving one word & noncommittal answers, bc he's stuck staring at the gorgeous omega in the paused video, then he speaks up over all the noise saying they NEED this specific historian on their creative team specifically to consult & design the costumes. Steve meets the entire team at a meeting meant to discuss & establish the various logistics needed to make the videos the quality the band wants, they've hired a famous horror cinematographer, an even more famous horror director, everyone in the meeting has a lot of experience in a big scale filming environment & Steve doesn't, but he tries to not let it get to him. He wears garments he made himself (ofc) some of them he made on the channel even. A walking skirt in a very sensible deep green & an embroidered matching walking jacket r the focus of the outfit, when he gets to the building he's met by Chrissy & she leads him to the meeting room. He meets everyone especially the band, Eddie stumbles over his words, when Steve removes his walking jacket to reveal the equally green vest Eddie chokes on his water.
