Honestly I just miss having a cat, but my roommate and girlfriend are both allergic. As a kid, I wanted a ferret but now I don't know enough about their personalities to know if I still do. I work at a vet and we get surprisingly few ferrets, so I have no idea what they're like, care wise.

Ash (Undergloom Sans): Very savvy and up on all the most popular memes, scrolling through memes is an activity very low on the ‘activity’ part and great for when he’s feeling a little too tired to do anything else. He’s very into tiktoks, which help him keep up to date on the latest meme songs-- some of which he might try to learn to play on his own. In general, he’s also into memes with funny or weird-looking animals (frogs, possums, axolotls, etc), no specific kind of meme, the presence of a goofy-looking creature in it is usually good enough to get a smile or a chuckle out of him.

Yrus (Undergloom Papyrus): Not all that up to date on the meme scene, he’s usually busy with other things... but! He really loves relatable memes, especially ones about procrastination or not being able to focus on work or having to do chores, everyday mundane irritations that everybody can relate to! He also thinks reading comprehension errors are great harmless fun (i.e., “my bad i thought u said moths”), just silly misunderstandings that make for confusing interactions until someone realizes.

Brick (Horrorfell Sans): Doesn’t always remember every meme, but he gets the gist of most of them. His favorites are the MS Paint memes, usually the more poorly drawn, the better (but a fan of pretty much every catcrumb image he sees, those chaotic little cats are great). He can also be caught laughing himself to wheezing and banging on the table over completely bizarre and out of context interactions--for some reason, they just hit right on the funny bone and he has no defense against them. (The ‘Nyquil Detroit Become Liquid’ post nearly killed him, but he would’ve thanked it.)

King (Horrorfell Papyrus): Not too interested in memes. He’s peripherally aware of them but rarely knows the latest trends or cares to know them. He does have a slight fondness for evil memes--ones about being evil or having an evil lair or just have the word ‘evil’ as an adjective in front of something else seemingly incongruous--he finds them silly and they can usually win at least a smirk out of him when he happens to come across one. If you want a laugh, though, find him some of those screenshots of old newspapers from the 30s-50s, formally written humor that still holds up even now (like The Windsor Star, Ontario, November 1, 1958, The Cincinnati Enquirer, Ohio, February 21, 1947, or Barnard Bulletin, New York, December 20, 1935). Sensible chuckles abound from those!

Merc (Horrorswap Sans): Not too into memery, he’s definitely got a lot of other things going on and isn’t always online. Still, he is a fan of stuff like one-time-i-dreamt and other accounts of peoples’ dreams or thought processes. He thinks it’s interesting, the little peek into the wandering, strange, and sometimes funny subconscious, or how people think about love and tenderness and nostalgia and remind others to appreciate those things, too. It’s a very niche, wholesome sort of enjoyment for sure... but not to worry! If you’re looking for something more mainstream and ‘haha funny,’ he also got very into the whole ‘Surprise! It’s cake!’ meme trend that was going on for awhile and is still delighted to find a video where a realistic object is cut into and turns out to be cake. He’s definitely going to make one himself, maybe as a social media marketing thing for his home business...

Ell (Horrorswap Papyrus): Very meme savvy and tends toward some of the maybe darker types of humor--stress and anxiety memes, introvert memes, et cetera. Animated text is a big one he likes, with enough of a mix of pessimist and optimist memes that he doesn’t come away from checking it actually bummed out or feeling bad, a fine line to walk to be sure. He also likes coding and programming humor! He’s still kinda teaching himself, so he definitely doesn’t get them all, but it gives him a little sense of accomplishment and community when he does, which he really likes.

Pitch (Horrorswapfell Sans): Not interested in memes, and a lot of them are heavily based on visuals which, unfortunately, he’s going to miss the context. Still, he does get a hell of a kick out of brazen and blatant misinformation--the smooth sharks post, facts-i-just-made-up, and the like--and finds it hilarious when someone insists something that is obviously untrue, especially if a lot of people aren’t getting the joke and are trying fervently to convince them of their wrongness. He’s also a little bit evil, so whenever he learns a new piece of whatever slang is popular and in at the moment, he’s going to use it incorrectly, or use outdated slang to induce cringe in those around him. ‘Totes yeet yo’? Yes. ‘That is so pog, as the kids say’? Of course. ‘It’s lit, fam’? Definitely, who do you take him for? The cringier, the better, he revels in the discomfort of others when he throws one of those babies out.

Nemo (Horrorswapfell Papyrus): Definitely knows a little bit about memes, not always the latest trends but his base knowledge is pretty good, and of course has his favorites. He loves John Mulaney references and reaction images, they just Speak to him, y’know? Outside of that, he’s very fond of day-of-the-week memes, Tuesday Again?, Out of Touch Thursday, Fat Fuck Friday and so on. Aside from being a useful reminder of what the hell day of the week it is, he likes the consistency and recurrence of it, just a silly little moment to look forward to at some point like, “oh yeah, it’s el muchacho monday, nice!”

Sunny (Gastertale Sans): Pretty wise to the meme scene overall, loves the fun and creativity of it all. If you want him to absolutely lose his shit, though, show him a terrible picture of an animal--by which I mean, poorly photoshopped, blurred, in mid-panoramic, as long as the end result is an absurd or very screwed up image. Why are things like ‘buff half cat’ and ‘dog but very, very long’ his sense of humor? He has no idea, but the worse it looks, the harder he laughs. He has a bit of a fondness for ‘gotcha’s too, like a Rickroll but really anything where you go into it expecting one thing, and get trolled by receiving something else. (If Megalovania memes were a thing in his universe, he would be all over them, if that gives you an idea of the kind of gag he thinks is funny!)

Aster (Gastertale Papyrus): Aware of memes, but not all that invested in them. He likes corporate and office/business memes a lot-- the kind that roast bosses and unnecessary meetings, translate ‘polite’ corporate phrases, anything to do with emails--because they can be very relatable. He also likes seeing screencaps of people on Facebook or Twitter getting dragged for misinformation, or trying to act like a pompous jerk and getting shredded (for legitimate reasons of course, not just random unprovoked cyberbullying). He...may be involved in a bit of that sometimes himself: he may not be working in a scientific field, but he is half of a scientist, and just petty enough to spend a few hours of his free time looking up and reading through a few credible sources to cite in a strong and well-crafted rebuttal argument if someone is being especially, dangerously wrong about something. Not everyone has the time and resources to do it, so why shouldn’t he? 😇

While music had been the thing to bring them all together, it was also a strange divide. Julie had been born in the 21st century while Luke, Alex, and Reggie had grown up in the 80s. Music may have been their common language, but it was like they spoke different dialects. It was most apparent when they warmed up individually before practices. They all tended to avoid using their own songs for warm-up, each instead reaching for their favorite songs from growing up. The guys never knew what song Julie was humming or singing along to while she played the keyboard and if it wasn’t a 90’s rock song, she rarely knew what any of the guys were playing and singing on their own instruments. With one exception. The guys had already started warming up by the time Julie had gotten home from school. With multiple music classes a day, they knew Julie didn’t need much time to warm-up before their rehearsals so they tried to get a head start. That day Reggie was playing around with Julie’s new synthesizer when she walked through the studio doors. She could tell he was trying to work something out and it sounded familiar but she couldn’t make it out. She was setting her backpack down by the couch when he got it, letting out a triumphant “Ha!” before playing the notes for the melody of Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up. Julie whipped around to face the dark-haired ghost, backpack forgotten as she stared at him with wide eyes. “Are you alright Jules?” Reggie asked when he looked up and noticed the look on her face. Julie shook her head slightly, snapping herself out of her shock. “Yeah, I guess I’m just a little bit scarred when it comes to that song,” she laughed but the guys just stared back at her with looks of confusion and concern. “Right,” she muttered to herself quieter, looking down at her shoes for a moment before looking back up and addressing the guys. “I forget you guys grew up in the eighties and nineties.” She went on to explain to her ghost bandmates how the internet had turned Rick Astley’s hit song into something of a curse. Thankfully they’d already learned about memes and some of internet culture so it wasn’t to difficult for them to grasp. Unsurprisingly, the guys thought Rickrolling was hilarious and they were thrilled that a song from their upbringing had been chosen for it. They moved on after that, finally getting into their rehearsal before Julie had to head up to the house for dinner. Still, in hindsight she felt she should’ve seen what happened next coming. “Jules!” Luke called excitedly as he poofed into her bedroom the next Saturday afternoon. Julie just sighed, setting her book down and looking at the boy expectantly. No matter how many times she lectured him on boundaries, the floppy-haired boy continued to poof in unannounced. “The guys and I have a song we’ve been working on that we want to play for you!” “You know what? I’ll forgive your trespassing for that. Let me find some shoes.” Julie said, grinning at the prospect of hearing a new song. The guys were crazy talented, especially in the song-writing department and she loved getting to hear what they come up with. Not to mention that some of their old songs were the ones that helped inspire her to be a musician herself. With the anticipation of what was to come, Julie excitedly led the way down to the studio. When she arrived she threw open the doors and plopped into the arm chair the guys had moved front and center for her, leaving Luke to close the doors behind her. “Alright, everybody ready?” Luke asked once he had slipped his guitar strap over his head, fiddling slightly with the microphone stand in front of him. In her excitement, Julie missed the mischievous look shared between the three boys and was not at all skeptical of the fact that Reggie was standing behind the keyboard rather than holding his bass. Alex used his drumsticks to click them off as they usually did but what followed had been entirely unexpected.

Rather than Alex kick in with a wicked drum beat, Reggie began the unmistakable intro to Never Gonna Give You Up.

Julie froze in shock, the excited grin slipping off her face in exchange for a look of mixed betrayal and surprise. She tried to glare menacingly at the boys but she couldn’t keep the smile off her face brought on by their antics.

“We’re no strangers to love. You know the rules, and so do I,” Luke began to sing, doing his best to mimic Rick Astley and Julie couldn’t help the laugh that slipped out.

The boys kept playing until the end of the first chorus before they sort of trailed off.

“We, uh, didn’t expect you to let us get this far,” Alex rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly as he returned his sticks to their little bag attached to his drum set.

“Yeah we figured you’d unplug our instruments before we even got to the chorus,” Reggie added and Julie laughed.

She certainly wanted to be mad at them but she couldn’t help but be proud. They had rickrolled her, and it was the best rickroll she’d ever seen.

15. favorite book you read as a school assignment?

I’m not sure about this actually. The books I remember reading for school, for like English lit stuff, were Great Expectations (didn’t do it for me at the time, though A Tale of Two Cities is marvellous), Of Mice and Men (it’s fine), Romeo and Juliet (grew on me). So because I didn’t really study that much literature there’s not a huge amount that I read for school, and nothing I really loved.

Clearly a good argument for more people to do English literature A-Level here...

22. role model?

This is a fun question. Generally it’d be nice to be more like Natasha because she’s so smart and thoughtful and good. Might also be inclined to throw my dad (good dude) and Gordon Brown in to the mix. Both of my last two bosses are enormously impressive people who also warrant a mention here.

There’s no need for me to try and get as many hits or kudos or comments as someone else or mimic their style if I’m writing things that are valuable and well-crafted by my own standards. It’ll take some time for me to fully internalize that, but the fact that I haven’t yet seems to stress out a lot of people, so I’m taking it a little more seriously now. :)

Ah, my first crack fic. This one was loads of fun to write. Without a doubt, Bolson!Sky and MasterCycle!Hyrule are parts of the story that make me most proud. They were both such weird ideas and I think that I implemented them well enough to get a chuckle out of my readers! Also, I will forever be proud of the fact that I was able to rickroll my readers via. fanfic XD 

Sponge Cake for Four 

Ah, my second crack fic XD. Crack fics are actually really really fun to write, believe it or not! I think the thing I like best about this fic is the part with Wars flexing on the innkeeper. Something about Warriors just flexing his pecs in front of a normal townsperson, probably t-posing to complete the picture as well, just makes me laugh. The story was written as a gift to everyone who frequents the supportive channel (at that time, channels) on the LU discord, and the fact that some people found it funny and well-written enough to take their mind off their current situation also makes me very proud. :D 

Of Minish and Men 

Without a sliver of a doubt, my favorite part of this fic is the character dynamics. Even though I like to think I’ve grown a lot as a writer since I first published the story, I think that the dialogue between Hyrule and Four in chapter 1 is still very thought-provoking and does the story’s namesake (not exactly a namesake though XD) a modicum of justice. And the way that Twilight and Legend’s dialogue built off each other was also pretty neat! Yeah, I’m quite proud of this story as a whole! :D 

Safety Hazard 

Ah, my third crack fic XD. Only now am I realizing how much crack I’ve written for this fandom, haha, oh lord. 

Anyway, I think my favorite part of this story is the resolution. Sun is actually such a fun character to write, and she really illuminated the last portion of the story with her cheeriness and motherly attitude. I’m also very proud of that detail with Wild thinking Sky’s letters to Sun were all romantic and then finding out that all of them are just Sky rambling about how much he loves his found brothers. Considering that I came into this fic with the most barebones outline you could imagine, I’m so thankful that the brain cell blessed me with a workable ending!  

10 Years of Lightning 

Ooh. This is a hard one. 

I think that the thing I like most about this fic might be the lightning imagery? I had just finished watching ATLA, and the lightning redirection scenes in Season 2 just stuck around in my head. They ended up writing their way into the story, and I think it came off pretty okay! 

Eastward Bound 

Eastward Bound is probably one of my better stories, probably because it’s one of the most recent, haha! Even though a lot of people seemed to like the snow imagery, my favorite part is the temple scene. I’m a Christian, and I’m heavily involved in my church and in biblical studies. I was even planning to study for a PhD in Biblical Studies for the longest time before I found myself slowly but surely becoming fixated on the idea of becoming a medical first responder. Anyway, I wanted to channel the sense of wonder and awe I get whenever I’m in church all alone and the light is just coming through the windows...oh those moments are so powerful. I did my best to communicate that feeling of gratefulness and gratefulness in the story, and I think I did it pretty well! 

Tarshish 

The emotions in this story are by FAR my favorite part. It’s such a weird little fic, with 0 plot, no resolved conflict, and very little dialogue, but I’m extremely proud of it. I was able to channel a lot of my confusion and anger into the story in a way that was constructive and thoughtful yet still stayed true to my emotions. I can’t wait to finish Chapter 3 and get it out, I’m very very happy with where it’s going. And I’m also pretty happy that the story is so low-attention, that takes a lot of the pressure off my back to cater to the crowd and makes me feel safe just writing what I want. :D 

And Silence Was Their Language 

This story was written for Caleb (aka the Lego Animation Guy), and he said that he liked it! So that’s my favorite part of the story, that it was able to make the giftee happy. :D 

But on another note, I like the way that the full-circle idea came through in the story. I started and ended the story on very similar notes, and that gave it a sense of completion and closure that even had me smiling. And the last line is pretty good too XD 

The Most Sincere Kind of Lie

I’m going to be honest and say that it’s extremely hard for me to answer this question for this fic. The story has received a lot of attention lately -- attention that I’m beyond grateful and honored to receive -- but attention comes with pressure, and with pressure comes perfectionism. At least, for me. And I’m only human. I can’t make perfect work, yet I really REALLY wish I could. But even though this question makes me supremely uncomfortable in regards to this question, I’ll try and answer it as best as I can anyway. 

I think that the subtlety I’ve employed in this story supersedes anything I have written in my life. The amount of double-meanings, foreshadowing, showing-not-telling, and misdirection I’ve done the story so far never ceases to make me smile at myself. I cannot wait for the Big Reveal later on in the story, one of many, actually, that will hopefully make all my readers stop, think, and remember all the little hints I’ve dropped along the way. I’m also quite proud of the dialogue coming up in Chapter 11. :)

since I’ve started writing fic about her, I figured I’d share a few facts about my Mind Blind MC, Lexi :) but of course, Lexi refused to just give me five facts so here’s ten!

Lexi Wiseman

Lexi is short for Alexandria, but literally no one ever calls her that, not even her parents. I almost made her full name Alexandria Nichole, but then I remembered her brother is Nick and that implies that either A) their parents are very uncreative, or B) they really like the name Nick xD I’ve decided that Lexi tells everyone her middle name is Nichole because she thinks it’s funny, but it’s actually, like, Jane or something.

Cut her hair short just before she graduated high school, mostly to remove any trace of a dye job that she’d outgrown (she did not look good with black hair), but also just because why not. Gray made an offhand comment that it suited her and so it’s been short ever since. Not that she’d ever admit that’s actually the reason (let’s be real, everyone already knows anyway)

Notorious clothes thief. Seriously, just the worst. Steals Nick’s shirts and hoodies all the time. Will steal Gray’s too if he leaves them at the house. Would steal Sally’s but they’re too small. Nick regularly goes through her closet (he asks first, he's not a monster) to reallocate stolen goods.

5’8”, just enough shorter than Nick that the height difference is really obvious. It bugged her a lot when she was a surly teenager (just one more way she was in his shadow), but she’s over it now. Except when he does the digging-his-chin-into-the-top-of-her-head thing (my sister does that to me, it’s the woooorst).

Really, really close to Nick. Seriously at like 110% even though there’s only 2 chapters out? She would absolutely take a bullet for him, but she’d bitch about it afterwards. Understands how much he’s sacrificed of his own chances at normalcy in order to be there for her, tries her best to be there for him in return. Cookie Incident notwithstanding, she was really happy when he met Gray because it meant he could have a friend that didn’t need to tiptoe around her condition, which meant no “choose between her and his own happiness” situation because they both know he would not have chosen himself. (Gray himself still very much tiptoes around her condition, but that’s a whole different can of worms). Still wishes he'd stop calling her Button.

Big, huge, ridiculous, hopeless crush on Gray. She thinks she’s very good at hiding it. She's wrong. She has accepted that he doesn't feel the same way and their love can never be. She's wrong about that too.

While we’re on the subject of her favorite people: Salomé Alavidze. Nothing else needs to be said, really. Sally is the coolest person in the world, cooler than Lexi, cooler than Nick, even cooler than Gray, and it’s a pity the rest of the world is too stupid to see it. Just as much family as Nick is. She’s definitely gonna try and play matchmaker for Nick and Sally, but also will definitely make gagging noises if she ever has to witness them kissing because gross.

Super smart. Also, a certified idiot. High Innovation, low Insightful, she's textbook high INT/low WIS, baby. Sometimes she can't see the forest for the trees, as it were. Makes up for it with style. Up until enrolling at Aeon, mostly just used this skill for hacking government servers kicking ass at first-person shooters. Can and will destroy you in Apex Legends, won’t even feel bad about it (gamertag is probably a Button pun and/or a pun about her Pollard Zero, so like… PanicButton or Zer0Chill :3)

Yet another musically-inclined OC :) it became a passion of hers when she realized that listening to music was a good way to shield her thoughts from other people, since it would drown her out. And then actually playing/singing/creating her own music was an even better way, plus she's pretty good at it. I could see her having a youtube channel where she posts acoustic covers of songs (plus occasionally an original song). In my head she sounds like Kina Grannis. Her most-watched video is a silly duet between her and Nick that she only uploaded because of sentimentality and then remembered ‘oh shit he’s famous!’ but then it was already too late. The damage had been done. It has like 10 million views. Oops.

Has used the combination of music and her mind blindness for evil. Likes to listen to earworms/meme songs/anything overly catchy that will stick with people even when she's out of their brainrange. Has definitely rickrolled an entire subway car. Probably at rush hour.

Aaaaaaaaaand here’s one more meme...in the form of “big reveal” number 25, a 4-panel comic!

Disney’s sequel to Wreck-It Ralph, Ralph Breaks the Internet, may not have lived up to the original movie (which was pretty much impossible anyway), but it did give me and many other video game fans a chance to see Ralph and Vanellope going off on another crazy excursion together, and I can’t help but love it for that.  In fact, little Ms. von Scweetz happens to be one of my favorite computer-animated characters ever created, and the movie made me love her and her sibling-like bond with Ralph that much more.  No fear, doubt, or “insecurity” can tear them apart.  ; )

Anyway, I could go on about the movie, but there’s a bunch to say about the drawing, so I’ll skip to that.  Like three of the previous four drawings, it illustrates something that didn’t canonically happen, but easily could have.  One day, while exploring the outskirts of the internet, Vanellope and Ralph came upon a shack used for storing internet memes (not all of them, of course -- that would require a much bigger structure).  Memes, as you may know, are humorous images, videos, pieces of texts, etc., that are copied, often with subtle changes, and spread rapidly by Internet users, and in this picture, Ralph happened upon my personal favorite meme: the John Cena theme music!

I’m not actually a pro wrestling fan, but for some reason, the clever way in which people have snuck John Cena’s theme into serious-looking videos (similar to the “rickrolling” meme), has a way of cracking me up every time.  I’ve even used this meme twice before on this very blog.  It’s just too fun to pass up sometimes, you know?

Anyway, back to the drawing.  The toughest part was undoubtedly the vast array of skyscrapers and other buildings in the background.  If I hadn’t taken the time to draw them in so much detail, I might have finished the drawing much sooner, but I don’t regret doing so.  It’s the tiny details that turn colors on a piece of paper into something real, and I had some fun coming up with ways to fill in the empty space.  Most of the background items were inspired by a picture from the movie:

I did, however, add a few of my own things, such as a Sonic the Hedgehog logo, a building with a plastic bubble containing a die on top (based on the board game Trouble), and part of the Amazon logo.  There’s even a tiny crack in one of the die building’s windows.  Things like that tend to happen by chance, after all.  (Get it?)

Another tough part was getting the details of Ralph and Vannelope’s faces, hair, and bodies right.  I’ve gotta hand it to the 3D artists who fleshed them out from head to toe -- the different-colored candy ornaments and scrunchie in Vanellope’s hair, her Reeses-cup-wrapper-style dress, the licorice straps in her outfit, Ralph’s wild hair, his stubble, his plaid sweater, and his rectangular-yet-realistic fingers and toes all had to have been a crazy challenge to get right, but boy, did it pay off, and boy, were they fun to duplicate in a drawing!  I especially loved drawing their hair being blown back by the loud voice inside the shack.  I also love Vanellope’s expression as she turns her head.  There’s no one in the real world or the internet who can make that expression like her.

So, while I could only capture a portion of the artistic magic contained in this iconic duo (and their movies), I give you this tribute to Ralph Breaks the Internet as a token of my love for internet-related comedy (and comedy in general), close friendships, and people who use the internet for good.  If the movie and the real-world internet have taught us anything, it’s that it’s a double-edge sword that can be used to either make or break things on an incredibly large scale.
