Could you tell us about the skills that MC could excel at?
I'd love to, Anon!
The main skill/interest/occupation your MC can have are one of the following:
Logging-Loggers mainly cut down trees, shape and split logs for use in building and such, or even cut firewood. This is how Papa got his start and then eventually also worked his way into carpentry (it takes some time, so this is as far as MC will be, but eventually they can also do carpentry). MCs that pick this may have special options or outcomes in the story because they will have better aptitude towards wielding a tool/weapon and will, in general, be stronger.
Carpentry-Carpenters take the wood from loggers and make things from it - furniture has a big market, but so do tools, utensils, and even art. They work in the fine details and beautification of wood. They also may be called upon to do some repairs to a home or assist in building bigger projects. MCs with this skill will have deft hands and an eye for detail.
Swordsmanship-If your MC has studied the blade, they're likely going to called upon to work as a guard or general peacekeeper for the area. MC's hometown is a bit sleepy, but isn't without trouble since it sees a fair few travelers. Duals are also a common form of entertainment as well as practice. MC's with this skill will have boost in hostile situations out in the world and be, in general, stronger.
Archery-If your MC has studied the bow they will also be called upon for guard duty. This is another very popular form of entertainment and sportsmanship in the world and there are almost never-ending tournaments that MC can be apart of both in and around the MC's hometown (this nets a lot of gold). MC's that master the bow will be second in skill only to their da (even if Oswin claims otherwise). MC's with this skill have a boost (from a distance) in battle, and nice strong arms. [This skill almost got a split between sporting (doing the competitions) and hunting, but there is already too much coding involved as is, so I didn't do it.]
Medicine/Herbalism-You need a healer in every party and MC can be a darn good one. MC's that study medicine mostly work with the established healer, Kavi, and his wife Betony (who specializes in midwifery). Lakota, MC's best friend, is also a practicing herbalist and will work with a healer MC. If your MC knows medicine, they'll not be as good in a fight, but a boon after it's over (assuming they are conscious...).
Trade-MC's that learned trade will be the money makers. They know what things are worth and can strike a deal with almost anyone. They may tend to be a bit more charismatic without much effort (they don't even need to be especially friendly, people just trust them). These MC's have a mind for numbers as well and are often good at spotting a scam. Not always so good in a fight though.
Cooking-MC's that have mastered cooking draw a great deal of attention from the wealthy. Eating isn't always a luxury in this world and need often comes before taste. Those that can forego need and afford the finer foods in life, will clamor for your MC's cooking. They prepare feasts and raise everyone's spirits with their skills. They have a lot of connections in high places. Cook MCs may not be super powerful (though those arms from kneading dough are nothing to balk at), but they wield knives with terrifying grace.
In Chapter 3 your MC will also get to pick a hobby that they primarily do for fun, but that may add some extra flavor for their usual occupation. [Singing, drawing/painting, sculpting, storytelling, whittling, and needlework]
Thank you for the ask, Anon! ^_^

Kinktober 2024 - Prompt 26 - Stoned Sex
Bit of a twist using @goldieghoulie's medieval AU character.
Elin samples a new tea blend being developed and has an interesting experience that leads to a cramped hand :p
AO3 Link
Read Below the Cut
The fire was warm, crackling softly behind the group of Siblings as they listened to the traveling poet and storyteller who had stumbled upon the Ministry in Linköping. Stories of Vikings, Valkyries, and the Old Gods had flowed as easily as the wine that night. Elin felt very warm sipping the tea someone had handed her, but it was a pleasant feeling. One of the Siblings had found and translated an older Icelandic manuscript about plants and learned information about one of the mushroom varieties in the nearby woods. Previously these mushrooms had been avoided, but were now understood to be a variety that provided “spiritual experiences.” Very shortly after this discovery the Siblings had consulted with earth and quintessential ghouls to attempt verification of the information. Under strict supervision of the ghouls, some of the mushrooms had been harvested, dried, and tested on a pig to ensure it wasn’t toxic. It hadn’t proven toxic, but the pig had definitely been experiencing something otherworldly. Soon after, two brave Siblings tested the plants themselves, ghouls on hand if things took a bad turn. The resulting experience had been enlightening for the Siblings, and it had quickly been blended into a calming herbal tea to promote positive experiences when consumed.
Their guest started another story about shieldmaidens and Valkyries, and Elin’s thoughts drifted. There had been a small group of newcomers to the Ministry in the last few days, and allegedly among them was Cardinal Copia’s formerly lost lady love. Elin knew almost nothing about her; Copia had been tight-lipped despite their long friendship and carnal involvements. All he’d really told her was a soulful, “I met someone while abroad, Elin. She was… amazing. But apparently it was not in Lucifer’s plans for me.” Elin hadn’t pushed, Copia would tell her when he was ready. As assistant to Sister Imperator, Elin was vocationally nosey as well as nosey in general, keeping her finger on the pulse of the Ministry. She had taken it upon herself a couple days after the arrival of the newcomers to try and find out who this mystery woman was. Instead Elin had discovered a different mystery woman. A crowd had gathered at the practice fields, and Elin had gone to investigate, finding a number of the Siblings of the Guard sparring, and an unknown person joining them. She’d stood at the fence beside a pair of Siblings, watching closely to appreciate the new person’s shapely legs and the glimpses of strong buttocks from under the long tunic. “Is this one of the newcomers?” Elin had asked quietly. One of the Brothers of Sin nodded. “He is an absolute vision. He’s thrown a couple of our guards now while sparring. He can break me any day.” Elin knew this Brother to prefer male lovers, and smiled, nodding in agreement before turning her attention back to the sparring.
The longer she’d watched, the more she noticed softness to the newcomer. The flashes of the face were softer at the edges, the lips more feminine than most men’s. Their hands were strong but still seemed more delicate than most men’s. Elin had studied the person’s form, seeing the more curvy nature of their body. Her eyes widened realizing that this was no man, it was a woman. “Ugh, I pray thee, let this man bend and break me!” The Brother of Sin sighed. “I suspect your interest in them will flag soon,” Elin smirked. “Why do you say that?” He’d asked, brow furrowing. “That’s no man.” Elin had smiled in amusement. The Brother of Sin gaped, turning back to the sparring ring. His jaw dropped lower as he watched and the realization sunk in. “Satan’s tits, that is a woman! Well, there’s always a first time, right?!” He’d laughed. Elin had chuckled at his joke, still fixated on the newcomer. There was no way this woman was Copia’s lady love; she’d break him, and honestly did not seem like she’d be interested in a scholar. Elin on the other hand… Well, Elin would need more information.
The story teller’s voice was lulling everyone in the group to relax, and as time passed Elin swore the forms of Valkyries were starting to form from the shadows. As the story finally drew to a close, Elin stood to make her way to her room. She moved down the hallways, eventually stopping when she heard footsteps behind her. Glancing over her shoulder, Elin saw a shadow move, elongating and separating from the darkness along the wall. Elin’s eyes widened as the newcomer from the sparring ring moved towards her – except was this the newcomer? She resembled the shieldmaidens and Valkyries the storyteller had described. The hair was longer than the newcomers and the clothing far more encompassing of her feminine form, but Elin wouldn’t complain. This warrior woman came to stand in front of Elin, smirking, and Elin shivered a little. She would do almost anything this woman asked, she was certain of it. The woman’s hand stroked her cheek, and Elin leaned into it, eyes fluttering as it slid to cup her head, pulling her into the shieldmaiden’s kiss. Or was she a Valkyrie? Elin couldn’t tell now, lost in the deepening kiss, the press of their bodies together.
She reveled in the strong arms holding her, and the muscular thigh pressing between her own. Elin rubbed her core unconsciously against it as the woman’s lips moved down her jaw to her neck, nibbling at her pulse point. When Elin managed to come back to herself, she tugged the woman towards her doorway, hand fumbling for her key. Inside her quarters, Elin quickly locked the door behind them, then turned to watch her newfound lover. The woman moved towards her confidently, pressing Elin into the wooden door with another deep kiss, her hand snaking to lift Elin’s skirts. Elin moaned softly as the woman’s hand found her folds, teasingly gently at the damp heat. The room began to morph around them, taking on a scene more like that described in the story teller’s tales, though Elin hardly questioned it. Her lover’s hands were helping her remove her clothing, revealing her flesh for her hungry eyes, then Elin found herself being lowered onto soft furs. Elin questioned nothing as the other woman explored her body with hands and mouth, worshiping at her breasts before moving down towards her aching cunt. A gasp left her when the warrior woman finally stopped teasing her and began licking between her thighs, expertly finding the bud of pleasure within. Soon Elin was on the brink of orgasm, arching her hips to her lover’s mouth and hands, when the woman pulled back. A needy whine escaped her, but she was soon quieted when the woman began removing her own clothing. Elin stared at her breasts in awe, admiring the shape and movement, the perfect hue of the nipples and skin.
Naked, the woman resumed her position and cut short Elin’s observations, being teasingly slow as she resumed her ministrations between Elin’s thighs. Her eyes closed and Elin gave herself up to the sensations she was feeling as her orgasm started again. Hands teased her breasts, and Elin’s eyes opened slowly, seeing a new black haired woman behind her on the bed of furs. The woman leaned down, kissing Elin while her hands still fondled her breasts and stroked her nipples to hard peaks. Elin let her hands slide up the second woman’s body, reciprocating the gestures being done to herself. How did I end up in a tryst with two Valkyries ? She wondered to herself, not recalling the tea she’d had at all. It didn’t matter though, as her world exploded in orgasm, and as she calm through it and began to calm, the dark haired Valkyrie moved to straddle her face and Elin happily obliged to taste and tease her, while the other began working her to another orgasm. Elin only hoped she’d have a chance to return the favour, after all, the night was long and there were three of them to work each other up over and over in a night of oblivious passions.
Elin’s eyes fluttered open, seeing light shining through the small vellum-covered window of her room. She blinked, feeling the coolness of the room and her woolen blanket beneath her. Had there not been furs there just moments ago? And the warm bodies of the two warrior women? Why did her hand hurt? Elin looked down, seeing her own hand stuck between her thighs, tacky with her juices. She realized sadly that she’d dreamt it all, and had in fact been pleasuring herself the entire time. “No wonder my hand is cramped,” she grumbled to herself as she sat up, stretching out the stiffness of her body. It had been almost too good to be true – only almost because there was always a chance she could find that newcomer from the sparring ring and potentially find a bedmate in her. Elin quickly cleaned herself up with the small ewer of water on her table, and put on non-wrinkled clothing to start the day. “It must have been the tea,” she muttered, though she would not complain entirely about her experience. Heading through the halls towards the dining hall to break her fast, she rounded a corner but paused when she heard her name.
Turning, she saw Cardinal Copia moving towards her. “Elin! Thank you for stopping. Did you sleep well? You seem… rested,” he offered, unsure if she looked well rested or not now that he was closer. “I did, thank you, Cardinal. I tried the new tea blend the Siblings have been developing.” “Oh, wonderful, wonderful.” He seemed distracted or hyperfocused on what he needed to say. “I, um, have someone for you to meet, Elin.” “Oh yes?” Elin raised a brow, wondering who it was, as Copia appeared to be alone. “In the hall or your office? I was on my way to the hall.” “Here is fine,” he smiled. “Elin, I would like you to meet a new arrival to the Ministry, someone I know I’ve been quiet about for months now… Lady Dominica, or Dom, as I call her.” Copia tugged on someone who seemed to be shyly hiding behind him, and Elin prepared a pleasant smile in case the Lady was nervous; obviously this was Copia’s lady love. Her smile faltered slightly in surprise as the person who came into view was none other than the lady from the sparring ring – the one she’d dreamed of between her thighs the night before, bringing her to the peaks of pleasure over and over. “Welcome to the Ministry, Lady Dominica,” she rushed out, hoping no one noticed the rising colour in her cheeks. “Thank you, Sister Elin… I have heard much about you from Copia, er, The Cardinal, and I hope to see more of you.” Elin felt something coil inside her with that statement and she swallowed dryly. “Thank you, my lady. I hope to see more of you as well.”

Memories not forgotten
Zhongli fluff post- contains memory loss and angsty topics. But overall cute I promise >.<
Not proofread
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Moments forgotten in the span of only of few minutes, seconds, and sometimes even instantly. This was the curse you bore when you were graced into this world. Simply unable to remember the most important or cherished moments of your long life.
You used to sulk in the melancholy of your life and how it will forever be the way that it is. But as you grew older- wiser, and since matured; you’ve realized that worrying over things you won’t even remember being a worry- was not worth it. Instead you’d allow yourself to live, forget, and live again.
It was sometimes a beautiful experience. You’d see such beautiful iridescent flowers or the pink Sakura trees and their falling leaves that wowed you the moment you laid your eyes upon them. And you’d continue to feel that awe forever as the memory of that ‘first’ encounter fades each time.
Other times it was truly a reminder of what a curse you had. Just as simple as when you meet wonderful people and hear their stories. Forgotten. Taking tasks from others or previous jobs and commissions. All Forgotten. Not to mention the burden you had become to your own family and friends, constantly having to be monitored and treated like a sickly child.
However, there was one person who treated you like any other being. Treated you normally as if you weren’t burdened with an illness. Constantly asking you questions and having beautiful conversations with you even if they were already had a dozen times before. He was sweet beyond all accords. He was a diligent listener and an even better storyteller. He’d often ramble on about his past memories and experiences, sometimes even speaking about the things he noticed and admired on his walk here. His kindness and attentiveness to you had not gone unseen. You’d thank him almost every conversation for the way he noticed you so simply. He’d kindly reply “of course, it is a great pleasure to have these conversations with you” ever time. At least you assumed it was every time.
As you and zhongli became more aquatinted, he’d make an effort for you to take the special medications he had made for you. His broad knowledge of this world and substances was quite large, so it was no surprise that he knew of some potions or herbal medications that would help you retain your memory even for alittle bit longer.
He mentioned that he had the assistance of his friends bazui and a far off aquatints named taighnari. With all their brilliant minds put together, they created a small herbal medicine that you would take 3 times a day- presumably for the rest of your life if you choose to.
You were relentless at first, to no ends would you be caught drinking this concoction hes created. But it was until zhongli had ‘expressed his plead for your memory to strengthen so that way you could make some with him that you’d surely never forget’ when you finally gave in and decided to put this medicine to the test.
It was slow at first, showing little to no sign of improvement on your memory functions. But after a few weeks and steady months, your memory was indeed developing and gaining strength. You’d remember certain things for the entire day, sometimes even multiple days before they were swept away. Even so, even if the memories you’d make would vanish inevitable- holding on to them for even an entire day was more than you’d could ever wish for.
You’d share the exciting news with your beloved zhongli and express how you were incredibly thankful to him. For he and truly changed your life.
“ZHONGLIII! Can you BELIEVE IT??” You cheer excitedly whilst getting closer to zhongli.
“I am more than pleased that the medicine has been working. It truly brings me so much joy to see you happy.” He says with his usual stoic and gentle tone.
“I actually remember what I ate for dinner yesterday and AND I REMEMBER THE FLOWERS I SAW ON THE WALK HERE!” You continue to ramble on about all the things you could remember. It was all a shock and somewhat hard to take in, but with zhongli’s steady hand holding your waist gently before you could fall, you knew all would be okay.
“Now my dear I have a question, one I hope you will not forget to quickly.” Zhongli asks before facing you. He towers over you but not in an intimidating way, rather a protective yet observant kind.
“Would you like to make some memories with me?” His tone is serious and the way he outstretched his hand in reach for yours tells you and underlining message.
‘He’s been waiting for this moment for a while, oh my poor zhongli. I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.’ You think quietly to yourself before you take his hand.
“I would love to but..” you hesitate for a moment. “when I forget, It will only hurt you.. wouldn’t it?” You were merely being honest. Inevitably you would forget the precious moments you hope to have with him. You wouldn’t want him to go through that grief.
Especially knowing you wouldn’t even recall the reason for it.
“Nonsense. Being able to recite to you the memories we will make, the journey we will take- will be my greatest pleasure. Reciting the moments we’ve shared will allow me to relive them, and I must say, watching the glimmer in your eyes as you realize the memories we share will be more than worth it.”
Zhongli continues on, explaining to you why no matter the curse you bare, you will never be a burden. You can’t hurt him for your presence alone is a living memory of love.
And although you havent had many moments with your dearest zhongli on account of your memory. He loves you with his entire being. And will continue to remind you of that everyday.
You live, forget, and live again.
Except now, you’ll be living and making memories along side the man who will never let you forget <3

Additional information ––– – Smoking Habit: Occasionally Drugs: Sometimes Alcohol: Occasionally
RP Hooks ––– – Born Under a Harvest Moon - Beldwin is an orphan and considered a ward of the county of Westfall, given the name Storm as is with most bastard children of Stormwind. Some wear it with shame or with anger, the young man has done well in accepting his past but seeking to rise above it as well. Raised amongst the wayward children of Westfall, a stiff lip was as strong as a closed fist to match an open hand in friendship. Life was hard living amongst the kingdoms farms but it wasn't impossible or dire as he learned and lived to become a man.
Lead by Legends - Throughout his youth, Beld was raised around old hearths and campfires among the poor of coin in the fields of the west. For what they lacked in coin to entertain, the people made up for it with the gold of story and song. There amongst his brothers and sisters of the country he would hear the old tales of heroes and tragedies of Stormwind's past. Lothar. Uther. Turlyon. Medvih. Windsor. Gavinrad. The spark that lit his mind as much as his heart to guide him to the path of honor and glory.
The Wilds - It was during the Fourth War did Beld find himself among the islands of Kul Tiras and eventually to the west in the rural country of Drustvar. Having been raised among farms and dark times, the autumn trapped land caught his heart and eye to assist in the tragedy that the Coven unleashed upon the small folk. He would rise among them, fight for them, and see that the dark would not consume them.
The Green Son - Time is strange and his deeds were not unseen, even with the influx of heroes who came to try and protect the lands of Kul Tiras, especially by the eyes of a deeper kind within the wild country. Much like the stories of his childhood he stumbled wounded to small lake and it's crashing waterfalls, his blood mingling with the cold waters that poured down from the mountain. Accepting a fate that may have meant the end, a gentle hum came to his mind before raising his weary sight up into the brilliant silver eyes of a white stag. Athair, Heart of the Forest, had heard the failing beating of his heart and deemed it should not be. No words or oath were spoken, only the matching of hearts and souls. The land had offered and the young knight had accepted with tearful joy.
HOW TO CONTACT: OoC - tumblr; Discord ( Mogwai Kraken#7988) Ingame - Beldwin (MG - 42 A-H paladin)
IC - The Green Son wandered the lands of Drustvar with an easy smile upon his face, the air cool go skin and the sun setting into dusk. It honestly was how it always was in the woods, but he loved it and likely would beyond even the end of his service. Beldwin Storm was not a native to these shores but over the last few years he definitely was no longer a stranger.
Beld would slowly come to a halt near a small copes of trees, his gauntleted hand coming to gently caress the bark of one of the old oaks. He could hear a soft hum in his head that could be considered unpleasant but had become a song that he could more feel than understand. It was a gift that Athair had bestowed upon him to hear the natural wild words of the land he had adopted as his own. The land had been ravaged for so long by the terrible powers of the Coven that its soft song had been drowned out in the silent screams of agony as the druid death magic warped it. The Crimson wood always made him shiver at the cacophony of agony that never ended from the wicker beasts that were drawn forth. He leaned his head to rest on the oak letting its own hum drown out the memory. He didn’t need that today.
Today was a good day that needed not the dour notes from the western provinces of the country. Birth was the note, not death, this day.
Releasing the tree, the knight continued on his journey making his way with ease but still with purpose. There was time yet to make it to the pool where his patron waited and there was much to rejoice with the wilds about him.
A new prince would be born this day.
There were many of the lineage of Athair but each had a purpose to fulfill. Some were short lived and bright, others long and steady like a bountiful season. Beld prayed for bounty but knew it was not his decision. The Word willed and spoke, the ending was already being written.
Storm would finally break the tree line and find himself before the mighty falls of the white stag.
Athair, Heart of the Forest, stood silent before the waters. White fur shone bright and clean in the waning light as it cascade to bring a silver sheen to the might crown of horns upon his head. Eyes black as midnight would stare at Beldwin, the stag lord’s demeanor calm and face regal as he tipped his head to welcome his wayward gallant.
Beld would stride forward and gently drop to one knee, the ancient bronze mail clinking softly with his motion of reverence and respect to the king. No words had been spoken as Beldwin would never be able to speak the language of his lord but honestly it was never needed. Emotions, thoughts, and dreams were the humans guidance to the will of the forest. It made it hard to question some of the motives of the lord, but the knight had yet to be lead astray by Athair’s will. This was a just lord and he was glad to have been found worthy.
The final streaks of evening light had slipped behind the mountains bringing the evening and darkness of night. Where Drustvar was a land plagued by the nights terrors in most shadows, it was not truly something to fear. It was just a part of the order of things and the will of the Word as it had written long ago. So too was there heralds and protectors of the night, as from the shadows crept the stout boars of the wood, courageous wolves who maintained balance, and even the black eyes ravens who always kept watch. But the night had one lady and she was as much a soul to the forest as she was consort to the heart.
Athainne, secret keeper of the forest.
Made of starlight and moon shine, the doe was beautiful in her own right as the violets of twilight were intertwined in the black coat of night. She was of smoke and shadow as she stepped across the waters to stand with her lord. Tenderness was easily determined to match the love the two beings felt for one another as eyes closed but a moment in honest trust.
As the grand gathering proceed a hush fell upon all the unsettling silence of the wild as it waited with bated breath. Even the waterfalls came to silent half, the rock below their pummeling drive growing dry as the river waited.
Beldwin would bow his head in reverence as did other subjects to the forest monarchs, all in silence as they awaited the ceremony of the moon.
Ages passed in seconds as night fully came and the moon shone full far in the heavens above. As the moonlight struck the pool, the heart and keeper of the forest turned to the pool of sparkling water of the still lake.
Stories would speak of thunder crashing or a flash of great light or perhaps the heralds of the night screaming with horns of glory. But that was not how it was done. It was subtle, it was peaceful, it was instant.
He was beautiful.
Upon the lake the faun had come to be. Born of moonlight, strengthened by starlight, guided by sunset, and welcomed with love. His eyes shone with brilliant blue, the gift of the mother, while his white coat brilliant white shone with the majesty of his father. He stood shaky upon the mirror surface of the lake, searching amongst the audience for some reaction. Fight or flight was all the newborn would know at this moment.
The Green Son stood. He would draw away his gauntlet to reveal his bare flesh, brown as the earth and rough as the oak’s skin. His hand raised as he spoke with not a cry or yell, but a smooth even voice. The reason he as chosen and granted this station among the forest. “Hail. Hail unto the Prince of the Forest. Welcome son of the heart and secrets, we welcome you.”
The prince would raise his head. He would stare at Beldwin. The knight would look back.
The prince would step forward onto the land that was called Drustvar.
The waterfalls cheered once more.

2, 15, 19, and 50 for Ismene, Katya, and Andrine!
OC Asks Game
Hi Ash, thanks for asking :D It will be fun to reply for the three ladies hehe
Btw this has Kingmaker spoilers on the Question 19 ⚠
2. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate or other?
Andrine: She has sweet tooth, but she isn't that picky. She would choose hot chocolate without hesitation, but she also appreciates sweetened tea and coffee (although Octavia has prohibited her to drink the last one, because she doesn't know when to stop it)
Ekaterina: She hadn't many options in Irrisen. When she has tried hot chocolate for first time, it was like a catharstic moment of her life. But she is very fond for herbal and spiced teas.
Ismene: She has two favorite beverages, in fact: coffee for the mornings (otherwise she will kill some Varnling member easier) and mead for the nights. Ismene has no aversion to teas, but their smell always reminds her of the moments when she gets sick.
15. What is the first thing people notice about them?
Andrine: She talks loud and fast. It's like a lean squirrel with white hair. Also her clothes are always showy, even the Storyteller knows it.
Ekaterina: Well, she glows. Either her skin or hair. And like it's not enough, Katya is tall. The poor woman just wanted to be invisible sometimes.
Ismene: If her clothes don't catch attention for being different from the Brevic/Mendevian fashion, Tilly does for both of them! You can't ignore an outlander woman passing by with a bear.
19. What does your character consider to be their lowest point?
Andrine: Sometimes, Andrine sees herself as a petty person. She could let Regongar kill Janush's assistant when they met for the first time, but she did it because she took personally the kidnap attempt that her party suffered earlier. And she have declined the Lanthern King friendship because she got tired of his bullshit as Nyrissa's as well, like she didn't make friends/allies with questionable fey before.
Ekaterina: Her lack of self-esteem. Katya won't complain about her doubts out loud, but down in her soul there is a still uneasiness about her valor. She can go as far as her legs can carry her, but in the end she always questions herself if she really did enough.
Ismene: Her short temper. It always gets the best of her. She can't bear listening to any kind of small talk and pretend that's ok. Her intuition is sharp, and Ismene is good at perceiving who's telling the truth or not. Thanks to the Gods, she learned to be slightly patience because of Varn.
50. How does your character sleep at night? Are they a heavy or light sleeper? Do they dream or have nightmares? Do they find it easy to sleep or are they more a night owl?
Andrine: When she's not struggling with insomnia due worries, Drine is a heavy sleeper. And she took a long time to be really awaken. Also her dreams are chaotic, mixing irl incidents with fictional ones. Sometimes she can't tell what was real or not.

Muse as a deity
Rules: Think carefully about your character and their development through their journey (canon or OC) within their story. Fill out the chart and tag whoever you want! Multi-muses, feel free to pick any of your characters-just a few, or all of them. Please repost, so the dash isn't clogged with reblogs.
God of: Life, love, family, light, music, art, happiness, storytelling. Life can include wildlife like plants and animals.
Associated with: Cherry blossoms, small animals like rabbits and squirrels, clouds, young plant or flower buds, and sometimes the wind itself and the night sky, particularly the stars.
Sacred plants: Cherry blossoms, peach blossoms, apple blossoms, basically any kind of fruit blossom, and also other soft-colored flowers like wisterias and lavender. White roses also work.
Sacred stones/gems: Rose quartz, clear quartz, green aventurine, lapis lazuli, and amethyst
Sacred animals: Rabbits, squirrels, mice, cats, dogs, and all birds. Technically, any animal is under her protection, including ones who live in the sea, but these are the ones most closely associated with her by human beings.
Colors: Pink, white, purple, blue (all shades), green, gold
Food: Berries and fruits, traditionally, though she is not picky. Hunters may sometimes offer her a part of their game to pay respects to the animal they bested in the food chain, while bakers may offer her bread. It depends on what the person offering has available to them.
Scents: Floral and herbal scents. One can't go wrong with fruity or bread scents either, though.
Accepted offerings/ways to honor: All things mentioned above are acceptable offerings, in terms of food and scents. However, as a deity, she is magnanimous and forgiving, and if you don't have access to her favorite things, she will accept just about anything, so long as it comes from the bottom of your heart. If you offer her something as an insult, though she will not curse you or condemn you, she will turn her back and be less likely to offer her assistance in the future. Basically, try and build your trust with her.
If you have nothing to offer, you can also perform acts of service to her, such as praying. Merely talking to her is always welcomed, as she will be happy to listen to your troubles and attempt to help however she can. The only way you could really go wrong is if she finds it difficult to empathize with you, such as if you find some kind of joy in the suffering of others. Now, some people really do enjoy the suffering of others, so again, she won't outright ignore you or hate you for it. But she will be disappointed, and feel less inclined to assist, because she has a rather strict moral compass.

All About the Seven Clans: The Grottan
THIS POST CONTAINS EVERYTHING I COULD FIND ABOUT THE GROTTAN. SOME INFORMATION WRITTEN HERE ARE FROM OLDER MATERIAL AND MAY EITHER CONTRADICT STATEMENTS OR IS NO LONGER RELEVANT. I WILL DO MY BEST TO STRING IT ALL TOGETHER AS COHERENTLY AS POSSIBLE. IF THERE IS INFORMATION THAT I AM MISSING, PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I’LL ADD IT!
Clan Index: Dousan Drenchen Grottan Sifa Spriton Stonewood Vapra
OVERVIEW
Deep within the the caves of Grot (also known as Cave of Obscurities, Land In Darkness, and Hole In Ground) lived the Grottan. Long believed to be extincted by most “daylighters”, these cave-dwelling shepherds lived in peace and knew little about the world above. Rarely did the Grottan leave their caves and it wasn’t until the late Age of Division did they reappear to the other clans. Because of their subterranean life, they were the most attuned with Thra and the Crystal, even to that of the highly spiritual Dousan.
The Grottan’s clan color was black/blue, their totem animal the Hollerbat, and their core elements were the night, shadow, and the past. Their sigil color was dark brown/black and their pennant colors was dark blue with brown detail.
Characteristics
Over hundreds of trine, the Grottan evolved to live within the dark, deep caves. They had the smallest population with only 37 members, but were believed to have lived three or four times longer than the average gelfling. Their skins were a variety of greens with pink or orange undertones. In the J.M. Lee book series, however, they had extremely pale skin much like the Vapra. Grottan hair was predominantly white-blonde with hair streaks of green, green-blue, red, and sometimes a combination of the three. They kept their hair mostly out (and messy) with braids and/or in ponytails. Their hair was adorned with beads, string, and sometimes random objects. They were usually covered in dirt and didn’t regularly wash, but they never minded. A Grottan’s wings were sheer and almost transparent.
The most distinguishing features of the Grottan were their large eyes and ears. Grottan eyes had very dilated pupils that allowed them to see in the dark. This in turn made them very sensitive to sunlight and it took a while for their eyes to adjust. Eye colors strictly stayed between brown and black. With their ears, they were able to pick up even the tiniest of sounds from miles away making them also the best at hearing. Some were even able to hear the vibrations of the earth and could make out the individual songs of rocks, sands, and mountains.
Grottan clothing were made of nurloc rump and were mentioned to be very soft. The colors resembled worn-out rags and of dirt, mainly tones of gray and brown with a dark reddish color. Other colors were yellows and blues. Some preferred to wear black cloaks and others sported head wear. The Grottan were hoarders and wore random objects on their clothing that weren’t meant to be worn as accessories. They rarely wore shoes, preferring to go barefoot as it helped them traverse the caves.
According to skekNa the Slave Master, a Grottan’s essence improved eyesight.
Life Style
Being a small clan, the Grottan were closely-knit. There was a great focus on community and maintain strong relationships with one another. It took teamwork to make Domrak as well as the entire caves of Grot habitable for themselves and other creatures. The Grottan maudra and her elder council gave adults assigned duties based on the skills they learned from schooling and their apprenticeships. Activities were done in complete silence, pouring all of their focus and effort into their tasks. The Grottan strongly believed in the quality of work so they were given flexibility and lax with how much time they took with it. This idea reflected in all forms of their lifestyle, making them one of the most easy-going of the seven clans. They were also avid collectors and kept all sorts of objects and knick-knacks in their homes.
The Grottan’s Observance of Thra, the Crystal, and Aughra
As the Grottan lived underground, they were both figuratively and literally the closest to Thra. They held observance and devotion to the planet and the Crystal of Truth as well as honored life in the best way they could. Every day they would find a crystal vein and said quiet prayers to it with a loving expression. Because of their location if anything happened to Thra the Grottan were the first to know.
Being the embodiment of Thra, the Grottan loved Mother Aughra as well. Until the late Age of Division, very few gelfling knew of her yet the Grottan spoke as if she was their friendly neighbor. Grottan maudras would send their apprentices above ground to seek her council and trade with her podling assistants for herbs and salves that were difficult to procure within the caves. They even wrote songs about her including the way to get to Aughra’s Hill and orrery.
Plenty of songs that revolved around Thra that most gelfling thought were myth the Grottan believed to be the truth. Some of these myths, like the Song of the Six Sisters, were even credited by Grottan storytellers. As being keepers of history, plenty of artifacts found within the Tomb of Relics provided proof of their validity.
Daily Routine
A Grottan morning begins with the sound of a single note from a firca and followed by a bow across strings and a voice. The music grew so loud that it could be heard all throughout Domrak. Childlings were sent to teachers to learn alchemy and other skills, older childlings were under apprenticeships to build on specialized skills, and adults set out to do their daily tasks. There were animal caretakers, shepherds, gatherers of certain material, fungi gardeners, alchemists, herbal sages, those who measured the water levels of the cave’s inner lake, and other occupations. The Grottan would spend much of their day dedicated to their duties.
Grottan Calendars
Being underground, they had to use other means of telling the time of day, season, or trine. They were able to create an underground clock or sky calender of sorts using the tiny holes that shined sunbeams from the ceiling of Domrak. The walls were marked and as the beams traveled, it indicated the time of day. For night, the Grottan would use the reflection of the Sister Moons cast upon the lake.
The water levels also showed what season and trine it was. A ritual which the Grottan called Moontide was performed when the water level reached the highest point. The Maudra Grottan would climb to the bottom of the Domrak cavern, marked where the water level touched the rocks, and labeled it with the number of trine.
The Art of Grottan Alchemy
The Grottan were resourceful and had a number of tricks which was thanks to their expansive knowledge in alchemy. The caves of Grot, which had a consistent cool temperature, made it an ideal place for storing items that would otherwise spoil or be unstable. This was especially true for valuable ingredients found above ground. They could be studied and manipulated without the risk of destroying or igniting them. This made the Grottan the most magically wise of all gelfling.
They had a vast knowledge of pastes, powders, bombs, elixirs, and more with various uses. Plenty were used for healing, igniting fires, or clearing out debris or animals. The Grottan knew how to carefully clear away debris from a collapsed tunnel with explosive without damaging it or the structure of the caves. They also knew how to carefully keep animals, such as the hollerbat, out of their ventilation chutes with smoke bombs. Of course they were taught to use them carefully but of course are prone to accidents. There have been notiable accidents with smoke bombs that if the smoke gets on a gelfling’s face they wouldn’t be able to see clearly for days. Many Grottan would carry their concoctions on their person having pockets within their clothing to hold containers or pouches.
Alchemists and herbal sages overlapped each other because both were adept in alchemy and medicine. They had an endless knowledge of fungi in particular, which were a favorite among Grottans. They had extensive knowledge of uses from medicinal to poisons to the intersection between using toxic materials for healing illnesses from the toxins of other creatures.
Diet
The Grottan lived on a mainly vegetarian diet although they would eat meat from time to time. The caves provided a variety of flora, fauna, and fungi so the Grottan rarely sought out plants from above ground. They’d eat large portions of mushrooms and root vegetables grown from cultivated colonies by farmers. Leafy greens were considered a rare treat as they only grew in places where sunlight reached. These rarities were called “dayfare”. Of the game that the Grottan caught were mostly fish and creatures like armalig. This grew less common as quarry became more difficult to find as time went on.
Grottan food was very flavorful thanks to the seasonings, seasoning pastes, and spices they used. Anything that was edible they would use. Grottan meals were not made the same way as each gelfling had their own unique way of preparing food. Grottans also applied alchemy to foods to preserve them. Pickling solutions were usually done with sugar, salt, and vinegar that improved its shelf life and gave intense flavor to otherwise bland ingredients.
A staple Grottan food was the glowing mushrooms and moss which, when consumed, made the eater temporary glow as well.
Although the Grottan never traded with other clans, their spices and seasonings would end up in the hands of other gelfling. Most likely, Aughra’s poddling assistants would trade them for other things. Grottan spices and seasonings would end up in places like Ha’rar’s Port Market fetching high prices for their rarity. For a time, the origin of their items were acknowledged but may have disappeared along with the memory of Grottans.
Mutualism With Cave Creatures
The Grottan had a mutualistic relationship with various cave creatures, particularly the nurlocs and hollerbats. It was thanks to these creatures that the Grottan were able to live within Grot. The animals were accustomed to their daily and nightly feedings from the gelfling. The Grottan learned to care for each species from the wisdom of past generations, including quantity and menu options which were given through careful oral instructions. In exchange, the creatures benefited the Grottan in many ways.
Nurlocs aerated dirt as well as making conduits of fresh air from loosening soil when they dug. Thus, providing fresh breathable air for the Grottan and other life in the caves. The worms’ shedded skin, fur, and scales were seen as valuable material for clothing, ornamenting, and instruments. The antlers of water nurlocs, which fell off every thirty to forty days, were made into flutes. The hollerbats, the clan’s totem animal, provided the Grottan with material that would repulse outsiders. Their dung was extremely flammable but never emitted a terrible smelt when burnt. The dung was turned into a special paste called everburn which was considered one of the most valuable resources for the Grottan. It was used for fires, torches, lantern wicks, candles, and hearths. They were collected in bulk, sterilized and stabilized using salt, and made into the paste which was stored indefinitely in jars. It was said that a candle, when its tallow was mixed with the paste, would burn for days.
Not all of the cave’s creatures were disciplined. To protect themselves from these unruly creatures, the Grottan utilized nonlethal alchemical methods like smoke bombs to keep them away.
Finger-talking
Sound echoed and bounced within the caves making it almost unintelligible by the time it reached a gelfling’s ear. It was hard for one to talk to someone if they were not in close proximity of each other. So the Grottan created a complex language called finger-talking to compensate. It involved tapping on the walls of the caves in specific patterns and rhythm. It was complex enough that it could relay complex emotions, meaning, and locations. The signals could be heard when one pressed their ear against the wall thanks to the way crystallized minerals within them carried sound. A dozen conversations would go on at once so names were specifically distinguished by the speaker when relaying their message.
Daylighting
Daylighting was a term used to describe Grottans going above ground, also known as “the top side”. It was considered a forbidden act as many hardly knew of the dangers of the world above. Only experienced gelfling assigned by the maudra were allowed to go. The tasks were usually done for finding ingredients and materials otherwise not found in the caves. There were few exceptions were the special missions to Aughra’s orrery as mentioned before. Trips above ground were always highly organized and planned so that they would go out and back in without making their presence known to other gelfling. They would almost always go out at night to avoid being blinded by the Three Suns.
Despite this, many Grottan (especially younglings) would go top side without the maudra’s permission. Those who were not immediately blinded by the suns would go as far as the Endless Forest and listened to all the unique sounds of wildlife and howling winds that weren’t found within their caves. But the one thing Grottan remembered the most was the sky, something that both fascinated and terrified them. It was said that they’d dreamt of it even trine after their trip.
Domrak, the Hometown of the Grottan
The Grottan hometown, sometimes called “Place-In-Shadows”, was hidden deep inside the rocky caves of Grot. It was surrounded by tunnels, crevices, and ravines as well as a large lake. It was decorated with glowing moss and the dim but iridescent crystal veins that lined its walls. The Grottan would travel to their small cave homes on small canoes or bridges. Far beyond Domrak, aside from the Tomb of Relics and the Sanctuary, was the Breath of Thra. Generated from the center of Thra was a series of warm air/wind tunnels. Its currents went through a network of underground tunnels and could be used to travel to and from Grot.
Remnants of the Arathim, the original residents of the cave, could still be seen from the multiple holes carved within the walls. Much of their relics have been removed or transformed, much like the Arathim thread-hooks. They were made by the spiders to hang their webs, but the Grottan repurposed and resculpted them to anchor their bridges.
Both in Age of Resistance and the J.M. Lee book series the Arathim attempted to reclaim their ancient home and destroyed Domrak in the process. In the show, the Arathim agreed with the skeksis to capture all of the Grottan using threaders in exchange for their home. But it was all a trap as the darkening had already infested it with darkened nurlocs killing them while destroying Domrak in the process. Rian and Deet convinced them of the skeksis plot against them and afterwards won their alliance in the gelfling resistance. The Arathim freed the gelfling they enslaved and evacuated with them from the caves.
In the book series, skekLi the Satirist lead the arathim invasion. He strategically manipulated Naia and friends by using Tavra under the control of a crystal-threader named Krychk to keep tabs and eventually lure them to him. The invasion was successful that not only did they destroyed Domrak but also reduced the Grottan population. Naia, Kylan, and Amri were able to stop him and the Arathim with the help of urLii the Storyteller and urVa the Archer.
The Tomb of Relics and Its Keeper
The Tomb of Relics was the most sacred place in the caves that the Grottan watched carefully over. It was a giant catacomb protected by a heavy stone door filled with artifacts collected throughout history. Shelves, chests, and crates were filled to the brim with treasure such as books, tapestries, tools, artwork, and more. To get there, it took half a day’s walk from Domrak.
How all of these artifacts came to the tomb was a complete mystery to the Grottan. They came up with many theories to explain it, like gelfling adventurers or Aughra herself putting them there. The closest of these theories, unbeknownst to them, was that of a slow, pale four armed creature which the Grottan wrote off as something that added a mysterious charm to the tomb. The four armed creature, named urLii the Storyteller, was the Tomb of Relics’ true keeper. One of the few mystics who lived away from his brethren, urLii traveled all throughout Thra to find and keep artifacts in a safe place. Being a very private individual, very few knew about him aside from Maudra Argot. It’s not clear if this was the same for other Grottan maudras. However, in the J.M. Lee book series urLii had a different relationship to the Grottan. He didn’t hide himself and freely taught childlings about all types of medicines and poisons.
Interestingly, it was the original home of the Dual Glaive. The weapon was placed inside a chamber by its creators skekGra the Heretic and urGoh the Wanderer for safe keeping. It was inaccessible to anyone but gelfling and lied within a passageway. It was protected by traps meant to test those who entered it. This included chasms, sharp swinging pendulums, and rock creatures similar to Lore. For those clever enough to spot them, there were secret passages that skipped all of these tests and lead right to the resting place of the swords. During the late Age of Division, Ordon and Fara bested the traps and took the Dual Glaive to help them fight the Arathim.
A game called Gricksies was loosely based on the layout of the tomb. It was a race against time where the Grottan would go through a maze, threw shells, gems, and stones when they reached the end, and ran back before a candle burnt out. A ditty simply called Gricksies was sung to infants when their parents tended to them.
The Sanctuary
A grand valley that lied in the heart of the mountains. It was the only place the Grottan were allowed to frequent outside of the caves (although was not technically considered above ground). Only visiting it at night, they would sit and meditated upon the song of Thra which they believed was best heard in the Sanctuary than anywhere else. The Sanctuary was once an ancient mountain lake or the elusive headwaters of the Black River as made evident by the petrified aquatic plant formations including plant and fungi that surrounded it. Remains of its ancient water were all but a small pond of shallow water found at the very base of the gorge.
The Sanctuary was once home to the bell-birds, which were capable of moving mountains with their singing. Every seven hundred trine, the birds would use the Sanctuary for roosting and finding mates. By late Age of Division, however, the birds went extincted. The bone shafts of a bell-bird’s feather were able to produce the song of Thra when blown into it. The birds also inspired a famous song created by Gyr called “the Bell-Bird and the Mountain”.
Vliste-Stabe
Also known as the Sanctuary Tree, it was the Grottan’s patron tree. They called it “the mirror of the mountains” because it had two faces. The first was a pink petaled tree that stood visible on one of Grot’s many mountain peaks. The other was an inverted stone tree that dangled deep in the Caves of Grot. The surface-side face had pink flowers that bloomed three times a trine and shed them late winter. The bottom-side face was a mystery as the Grottan knew it existed but none could find it. That was until late Age of Division where Deet happened to stumble upon it. One of the Grottan’s most romantic songs were based on the tree, which alluded to its two faces, was called the Mirror of the Mountain.
Other interesting aspects of the Sanctuary Tree was that it was capable of speech but only allowed very few to hear it. It was also capable of showing visions of the future with their flowers attached on its roots. It was noted to have a close friendship with Aughra who she would sometimes come to for advice. Like the other Great Trees, the Sanctuary Tree struggled to keep the darkening at bay until it finally succumbed to it when attacked by a pack of darkened nurlocs. Before it died, it gifted Deet with the power of darkening absorption.
Relationship With the Skeksis and Other Clans
During the early Age of Division, the skeksis sought alliance with the Arathim. When they refused, the skeksis cast them out and gave the caves of Grot to more willing subjects: the Grottan. As they became sensitive to the Three Suns, they turned reclusive to the world and eventually became forgotten. Although they were the least influenced by the skeksis, the Grottan still had rituals and prayers based around them as they still held the belief the lords were protectors of the Crystal.
As they rarely had any contact with other clans, the Grottan viewed them with skepticism. Whenever a Grottan would go top-side, they made sure to stay clear of other gelfling. This wariness was engraved by the Grottan maudras who did so in order to protect their clan as they believed other clans wouldn’t be kind to them.
Although they’ve been isolated for hundreds of trine, Grottan have a unique connection with the Vapra. According to the Song of the Six Sisters, Thra entrusted the founders of each clan with elements of Thra to protect. The sixth clan known as the Silver Sea Clan was tasked with not only looking after day and night, light and shadow, but also the past and future. Because Thra requested seven clans and the original task became too difficult for one single clan, the Silver Sea Clan split into two: the Grottan and the Vapra. The Grottan became keepers of the night, past, and “dark things that should be left in shadows”. Due to these associations, other gelfling, especially the Vapra, feared them and eventually looked down upon them. The Grottan still carried these stigmas even after they were believed to be long gone. The Grottan equally didn’t like the Vapra as they were offended that their sister clan wanted nothing to do with them anymore even before they “vanished”.
The Grottan had many names for the gelfling that lived above. These included (but were not limited to) "daylighter", "sun-brain", "moon-child", "sky-baby", and "tunnel-screamer”. In return, outsiders sometimes called the Grottan “Shadowlings”.
Notable Grottan Members
Deethra: Better known as Deet, was a Grottan who lived in the late Age of Division. She was an animal caretaker with a deep respect and love for Thra. Inverting Stereotypes in Curse of Strahd
Originally from this reddit thread by JimCasy
Modules
While looking for some art to post in my Curse of Strahd group, I ran into this interesting article on racial stereotypes in this long-time classic D&D adventure. For the sake of this post, I won't be debating the observations or stereotypes the article covers. Instead, I'll be taking these at face value, and seeing how one could work the story in a way that inverts these stereotypes in ways that actually enhance the overall story and experience of Curse of Strahd.
A Note on Stereotypes and Storytelling
It's been my experience thus far as a DM that stereotypes need not always be avoided. Indeed, many players come to the table to live out some of the common tropes of D&D. At the same time, I've also found that bending these tropes, working in more variable gender roles, and generally subverting players' expectations has made for much better storytelling.
The Vistani
Though the campaign begins likely with the party trusting the Vistani, if you play it by the book, they're likely to hate these wandering Romani-counterparts nearly as much as they hate Strahd himself. While the twist is good, I think we're served better by dishing out a more intricate picture of these people.
This one is very easily addressed! Some of my plans:
Rather than mostly thieves, bandits and thugs, we can throw in a bunch of different stat blocks for Vistani, which also have corresponding personal traits we might expect.
Bards. Vistani are all about music and entertainment! Every Vistani camp should have a musician or two, and perhaps every other camp has a particularly magical one (aka Bard). This character can use Song of Rest to help characters recover, and perhaps even be recruited to help the party out on their many missions. This character would be mostly interested in uplifting spirits, gaining renown, and is a perfect source for humor in this very dark setting.
Druids. Vistani have to eat, care for animals, hunt, and obtain fresh water on their many travels. It only makes sense that a Vistani Druid or two wander around Barovia helping the various camps make ends' meet. These would be more of a neutral bent, more interested in the state of the land and its creatures than the politics of the Vistani and Barovians. They would likely be willing to grant insight to the characters on the creatures of the land, and serve as temporary guides.
Guards. While the book states Vistani aren't allowed in Vallaki, I think throwing a few Vistani guards into the mix shows that this prejudice is pushed back upon and not always tolerated. Rather than assuming that this kind of segregation has won out in Barovia, it creates more tension to have character which break the mold. Vistani guards would be more willing to turn a blind eye to characters trying to do good - such as feed or even release prisoners. They may also cause distractions for the players or assist them in town in other ways, provided it doesn't get them into too much danger. These guards would be respected and appreciated by some Barovians who can't provide much entertainment or soul-ful light on their own.
Craftspeople. The Vistani have tons of trinkets, instruments, weapons, leather armor, and other supplies that all need to be made and cared for. This is an important stat-block or character type to subvert the typical criminal stereotype, as it shows these are a people who work and create for themselves (though some still resort to thievery and deception!).
Some others would be Scouts, Priests, Archers/Hunters, Knights, and Veterans.
Alignment changes: have more Good Vistani in the mix.
We have a couple of options here. We can maintain the overall structure of the story and the alignment of the main Vistani characters (who are mostly in line with Strahd one way or another), OR we can flip these on their heads and change up the core story to account for that.
If we do the former, we can simply throw in more Vistani NPC's (per above examples) that break the mold and are actually Chaotic Good like Esmerelda. While she is most likely to join the party on their adventures, the other Good Vistani will serve as temporary helpers and guides along the way. They may even hint at the underhanded plots of other Neutral and Evil Vistani.
Madam Eva is a central figure to the story, and she's said to be chaotic neutral. However, I'm likely to play her more as Neutral-Good, as her ultimate aim to free Strahd from his curse is definitely good. The means by which she attempts to do this may stray into grey areas, but particularly in the story with our players we can highlight her inner tension (once they learn more of her history), and not simply cave to allow her to be a more neutral and sometimes evil character.
With Madam Eva as a central leader of the Vistani, this inner-tension she has would be shared among her people. While some can be played as a bit more opportunistic and villainous, the story gains a great deal more depth if most Vistani are chaotic-neutral or neutral-good. They're primarily a very creative, poetic, passionate, musical, talented and charismatic bunch, with some bad apples who use their talents for their own gains.
Drunkenness
This one is easy - not all Vistani need to turn to the drink. It's a cop-out and overplayed stereotype! However, to play up the Vistani's love of the party we can throw in other types of recreation and creativity. Depending on your group, this could include more herbal remedies, druidic magic, competitive hunting games, card games, duels (physical or poetical), and lots of romance.
Prime example: rather than the party stumbling upon a wagon filled with 4 drunken, unconscious Vistani, I think it'd be far more interesting that they stumble into a wagon filled with 4 sleeping Vistani lovers.
Lying
Break this trope by having some Vistani actively abiding by a code of honor to never tell a lie. This would include telling things straight even if it means harm to them at times!
Theft (of children and otherwise)
Vistani can be providers not only to themselves but also to lonely Barovians struggling under the oppression of Strahd. Many Vistani don't see Strahd in a more tragic light - so too would they see the listless souls wandering about his realm. They may even see it as an important spiritual exercise to soothe the suffering of these empty vessels whenever they can. Perhaps some even believe that the souls of Barovians can be rekindled, and it's their life challenge to try to do so.
"The Evil Eye"
I'm likely nixing this entirely from my game, as I don't believe it adds much at all and plays into a very negative stereotype. This is D&D! Loads of characters have magic, including the Bestow Curse spell. Play up other types of spells that some Vistani can have, as well as Divination magics.
The Mongrelfolk
I'll be referring to them instead as the Fael-Iasg ("Fail-y-as-ick") which means "wolf-ish" in Gaelic. This avoids bad stereotypes, and also adds some culture and flavor to them.
In our game, I'm not going to play them as idiotic or unable to speak. Instead, they'll be susceptible to going into "wolf-mode", at which times they'll become more animal than human. However, when they're in their humanoid mood, they'll be able to communicate. Just not super well, since they're not the most sociable of folk.
In my view these are not a whole lot different than Kenku, and so I'll be playing them in a similar way. They're the result of a curse laid down centuries prior, and while there is some tragedy to their story, they do their best with what they've got. They can be incredibly strong, fast, and sneaky.
Ultimately I'll be playing them a bit as a different genus of Werewolves, though less powerful.
To maintain the horror elements of some of the encounters with these folk, it's fairly simple - some of them have been possessed by a spirit of the land that has corrupted Barovia. This would be Baba Lysaga - not Strahd himself. These Fael-Iasg are known to get out and attack villagers at times, and is a big reason why they've become more isolated.
That's all for now! Thanks for reading.
