MY TGWDLM THEORY (it’s probably not just mine, it’s probably really popular but I felt compelled to post nonetheless)
Hi! I’m Mylo, your resident TGWDLM obsessed guy. I’ve seen it 49 times (and counting!) with friends and by myself, so you start to notice a few things after seeing it that many times.  I actually developed this theory after like...my 5th watch, BUT I’D LIKE TO SHARE IT WITH THE WORLD!  Uhh, warning, I’m gonna go off-track and on tangents I’m sorry in advance “ Do you mind if I give you the pitch? “ The musical is a reenactment put on by the aliens.  See, you’ve probably heard of this theory before, but I’m here to provide evidence! Here goes; IT IS CANON that non-infected people cannot hear the background music. (Which, by the way, I find to be a really cool detail, especially in Join Us and Die where everyone is...talking over the music, because they can’t hear it, and in Let it Out, where you can SEE Paul’s reaction to hearing the music for the first time oh my GOD Jon Matteson SLAYED that role and everything about it) This detail is important for the core of our theory, because if non-infected people can’t hear the music, how is the audience hearing it? How are we, the viewers, hearing the things only the aliens can hear? Because the audience must all be infected, the aliens are reperforming to themselves to retell the story.  I’ve also seen a theory going around that Emma got away? And I’m so so sorry to crush your bubble but if she got away she wouldn’t be in the opening number :( SPEAKING OF THE OPENING NUMBER The recap of everything fits perfectly with the theme of this being a reenactment. It’s to catch up to speed everyone listening!  ALSO! The meta jokes. The joke after Show Stopping Number to clear the stage (Should I take this chair?! I’ll get the piano!) wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t a reenactment. The slow-mo in the helicopter is another example of something that had to be added by the aliens.   I believe it’s also canon that it took 2(?) weeks for the infection to spread out of Clivesdale and across the globe so woohoo the world’s infected and my theory is probably correct!   You could argue; hey, it’s just a fictional musical! Duh, it’s gonna have musical gimmicks. AND TO THAT I SAY; STOP. PLEASE. (/lh) THIS MUSICAL MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME AND I WILL NOT STOP TALKING ABOUT IT LET ME *LIVE*  Final thoughts? uhh the world is doomed to become a musical love you guys enjoy not-singing while you can <3

No, because people keep acting like Grace Chastity being consumed with a lust for the power that Lords in Black provided her doesn't count as a world ending Cataclysm - but it very much does. Not only has she shown little to no empathy for others throughout the entire show and only ever felt bad for lying to authority figures and being horny - but the final song of the Musical is essentially a reprise of Max's Murder Song/Manifesto which places her as a parallel to Max. Max sings about how he's going to kill ALL the Nerdy Prudes and not once but twice tells the audience that it doesn't matter if someone is actually a Nerdy Prude because he makes the rules and gets to decide who is or isn't a nerd etc etc. Grace's take is that she is going to kill all the Dirty Dudes but she's literally singing it to a guy who has, throughout the entire musical, done nothing to indicate he's a pervy/dirty dude and only kissed her after she asked him too. Like Max, Grace Chastity doesn't actually care if someone genuinely fits the framework of her stated victimology, because she has the power so she gets to make the rules.

Honestly it's like some people didn't think about the implications.

Someone’s prob caught this long before me, but:
In Lord of the rings (fellowship) we see the ring leaving Gollum and bouncing and rolling down the rocks:
Tumblr media
The ring wanted to leave Gollum and therefore did.
It’s then picked up by Bilbo unwillingly; has an ‘unexpected journey’; and stays with him.
But when Bilbo is leaving, he decides to leave the ring with Frodo. The ring however, wants to stay and keep wielding its power and influence over him.
And when, at Gandalf’s insistence, Bilbo drops the ring, it still doesn’t want to leave him:
Tumblr media
Which is why it falls flat, no bouncing or rolling away. It thuds to the floor like a child might stomp its foot when not getting its way.
I dunno how i’ve never caught this b4, and I may just be stupid and ppl have spoken bout this b4 but i’m a nerd and can’t help but mention it unprompted.

One of the funniest things about “Hatchet Town” is that over the course of three musicals and Nightmare Time, most, if not a significant number Hatchetfield residents HAVE committed murder or been accomplices/accessories to murder in at least one timeline. To the point where if you randomly accused pretty much anyone in town of being a murderer, there’s a good chance you’d be right.

ok, little rant about a use of a leitmotif in les mis that i think has slipped under most people's radars!
so you the know the police leitmotif? the "tell me quickly what's the story/who saw what and why and where/let him give a full description/let him answer to javert!" tune that appears whenever somebody gets arrested?
now turn your ear to javert's suicide, specifically the "i am reaching but i fall/and the stars are black and cold" part. it took me a while to notice, but this whole section of the song is just a snippet of the arrest leitmotif:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but he never completes it. the snippet repeats and repeats. try as he might, he finds himself unable to sing the same old song of Justice and Law and Righteousness and Order. he's like a jammed cassette player spitting out the same second of music over and over and over and over again, unable to follow his old ways, but unable to let them go. he's stuck, but he will keep throwing himself against the walls of the cage.
javert is desperately trying to run on his old tracks of thought, but, as vicky h puts it, he experiences "the derailment of a soul, the shattering of an integrity irresistibly propelled in a straight line and dashed against God".
: )

If there's one thing TGWDLM fans are gonna do, it's think about the implications. And the implications of the opening number are crazy.
So. We know that the show isn't completely chronological since the opening number takes place before the meteor hits. So that song is a sort of "flash forward" moment. But when you think about it, we don't really know how far in the future it takes place.
What we do know is that by the time it's happening, Emma is infected. She has a little solo in it singing about how Paul is pining over a barista
Tumblr media
And we know that this is meant to be an infected Emma specifically. Lauren had other characters in the show, if they wanted to avoid the Emma implication they would've just dressed her as one of those.
Tumblr media
So we know this is meant to be Emma.
And Emma isn't infected until the very end of the show. She's dragged off stage during the credits. So since she's infected in the opening number, we know the number takes place after the events of the show.
Another important detail is that Paul is infected before Emma. He's the one that passes it on to her.
So back to the opening number, Emma is infected. Which means by just following a simple timeline, Paul must also be infected. He should be singing and dancing, right?
But that's not what happens. Paul misses his entrance.
Tumblr media
If Paul is infected, then there's no reason he should be missing his entrance. Furthermore, if he's a part of a hive mind, there's no reason other members of the same hive mind shouldn't know where he is. They are literally all connected by one brain, and yet both Mr. Davidson and Bill express they have no clue where he went.
What I'm saying is that Paul is not infected. He was infected (again, we know that because Emma is infected and he was infected before her) but now he's not anymore.
I'm saying there's a way out of the hive, and Paul found it. That's the only explanation that makes sense given the facts of the situation. Sometime after the events of tgwdlm, Paul is able not only to break out the hive mind, but to hide from it.
And if he broke out, others could do the same. Maybe even Emma.
Edit because a countertheory has emerged: Yes it's possible that everyone is infected the entire time and the show itself is just Pokey replaying the events for the fun of it. But it seems unlikely to me. First of all, each of the Lords in Black has a distinct personality. They all are evil, but within that they seems to fall somewhere on a spectrum of "silly billy" to "prick." For example, Tinky is more of a silly billy. He toys with humans without much of a motive and more for just shits and giggles. But in every instance, Pokey's more on the extreme side of prick.
Tumblr media
He's one of the few with an actual motive behind what he does. In Yellowjacket, it's confirmed that Pokotho hates the sound of anyone's voice except for his own. The events of TGWDLM don't happen because Pokey is bored, they happen because he is executing a plan. So I don't think that he would just have them play out their little scenario just to entertain him, especially just one small island? I just feel like he'd be more focused on world domination.
If the theory is that all this is happening after Pokey's already taken over the whole world, no one was successful in stopping him, then yes it's plausible, but still weird. There are a strange amount of things in that show you just think an eldritch god wouldn't include.
Edit 2: New evidence has emerged???
The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals is loosely based off of Invasion of The Body Snatchers. Paul's last name is even a nod to the main character, Matthew. At the end of the film, Matthew survives, and continues living among the infected, pretending to be one of them. And wouldn't that be just such a fun little parallel...
Obviously it doesn't prove anything but the source material doesn't lie folks.

I like to imagine that Finn and Noah will exaggerate the Byler kiss soooooo much
like the duffers will make it big,I know they will because it’s so important but Finn and Noah will put their heart and soul into that kiss
they will make it the best kiss in cinematic history, even if the script was ‘soft peck on the lips/cheek’ you know they would full on snog each other
they know what the Bylers want and they will deliver
they will make it so dramatic and do whatever it takes to make it so Milkvans can’t say Will forced himself onto Mike,or that Mike didn’t enjoy it
basically Byler kiss will have so much effort and heart from everyone involved that it will more than satisfy the needs of Bylers everywhere whether or not it’s they way you would’ve wanted it to go (ie.some ppl want a rain kiss some want a church kiss/UD kiss)

I think I’ve seen a post about it before, but I’ve connected more dots and I feel like it should be talked about more because..
Tumblr media
that guy from La Dee Dah Dah Day is totally Max right?
a couple things make me believe this!
- character is a jock played by Jeff, and Jeff was heavily considered for the role of Max before he got involved in other projects
- we see Peter (hot cocoa boy) is also infected during this number which could be a coincidence and they just needed an extra, buuuut….in the “Nerdy Prudes Must Livestream” livestream, Nick mentions how NPMD was the first completed work in the Hatchetfield trilogy
-we do see the same letterman jacket being used later during the working boys segment
Tumblr media
however we know this is (very likely) a different character because of how Jeff’s hair is up and how the letterman is now buttoned
-bonus points for the “J” on the letterman possibly standing for “Jägerman”
-the demeanor of the character (even though his is infected) gives a very Max like energy and yes this could be Jeff just being an asshole jock, but NPMD was the first finished Hatchetfield show which means they would have known what Max’s checker was going to be like
I think this is fun to talk about because like….how the hell did max get infected??
I know this is a question that can pertain to many of the first few infected characters we see, but I feel like most of them can be covered by “oh yeah they went to the starlight that night”, but there’s no way max would have. we know he got infected before the rest of hatchetfield high because of the later scene of Alice being trapped in the high school, so that didn’t infect him. that means he was killed and then infected or some how infected unknowingly like the patrons in beanies. the ladder is more likely obviously, but imagine if it was the former and instead of Max coming back as a ghost after he died in the Waylon place, he came back as a part of the Hive.
boy do I love thinking about the implications!!

Ngl I would love it if Film Theory covered the Hatchetfield series lore. They’ve covered other YouTube series before so it could be possible.
