1. Hunter Heartst Helmsley 

(WWF heavyweight champion)

Hunter Hearst Helmsley is the current champion of the World Wrestling Federation. Even more so than The Rock, he has been driving the WWF since Steve Austin went to the sidelines. Triple H was a headliner for the Dec. 12, 1999, Armageddon pay-per-view,  in which he carried Vince McMahon to a great match. He also was involved in the company’s top angle, “marrying “ the boss’ daughter and turning her heel.

2. The Big Show

Paul Wight’s grasp on the heavyweight title was brief, as he lost the crown to Triple H on the Jan. 3 RAW. The WWF did a good job of hiding The Big Show’s weaknesses and getting a decent run out of him as champion. He wrestled a lot of short matches (and worked very hard in them) in November and December 1999, but he didn’t earn the top spot because of rumors at press time that he would lose the title in January before Royal Rumble.

3. The Rock

Even though he was pushed down the card and put into tag team matches with Mankind, The Rock remains one of the company’s top draws. The Rock always gets an enormous pop and the crowd hangs on every word he says, except when they are finishing his catchphrases for him.

4. Chris Jericho

(WWF Intercontinental champion)

Chris Jericho continued his rise up the WWF ladder by finally winning the Intercontinental title from Chyna at Armageddon. Jericho’s in-ring work has been crisp and concise, as it always is, and his mic skills continue to improve. He is developing into exactly the kind of star the WWF hoped he would be when the federation signed him.

5. Chyna

(WWF Intercontinental champion)

Her reign as Intercontinental champion ended at Armageddon, but Chyna did well for herself during her run with the WWF’s No. 2 title. More importantly, instead of just accepting her position, she worked to get better and had a good match with Jericho when she lost the title.

6. Kane

The Big Red Machine, with lovely Tori at her side, continues to get over with fans as he works his way up WWF cards. Even without that success, Kane deserves a spot in the top 10 simply for the amazing clothesline he delivered to X-Pac from the top of the cage at Armageddon. It was a fantastic spot for a man of his size.

7. Mankind

Even though his body is breaking down and he is looking toward retirement, Mick Foley was extremely entertaining as 1999 came to a close. His skits and subsequent feud with Al Snow were classic WWF television. January 2000 ranking: 5

8. Jeff Hardy 

He may be a tag team wrestler, but it’s getting harder and harder to ignore the amazing exploits of Jeff Hardy. Always a hard worker, he continues to come up with new moves. His senton bomb from the top of the cage during the Dec. 13, 1999, RAW, which he knew he was going to miss, was another amazing moment from Hardy.

9. Val venus

(WWF European champion)

Val Venis was at his best in winning the European title from The British Bulldog i na  three-way match that also included D’Lo Brown. He is a very accomplished wrestler who just need a break in the WWF to show what he is capable of.

10. Al Snow

Al Snow’s fortunes picked up due to his feud with Mankind and The Rock. he got major exposure in his vignettes with Mankind in Smackdown and is now in the mix with the WWF’s premier players.

Magneto (Max) Trivia:

1. After Magneto was believed dead in the Genoshan holocaust, he became a popular t-shirt logo and graffiti image.

2. The DC Comics super-villain Doctor Diehard of the Extremists is based on Magneto.

3. A Jack Kirby close-up image of Magneto's face was used as source material for Roy Lichtenstein's Image Duplicator (1963).

4. While Magneto is Jewish, he maintained a cover identity as a 'Sinte Gypsy' when searching for his wife Magda. This created confusion amongst some readers as to his heritage, until it was authoritatively confirmed that he is Jewish. It should be noted that this confusion probably stems from a comic book published in the early 1990s which attempted to retcon Magneto into being a Sinti, possibly because Marvel was preparing to make Magneto a deadly villain again in the crossover called "Fatal Attractions" and they did not want to draw accusations of anti-Semitism by having one of their main villains be Jewish. This attempted retcon was corrected a few years later when it was revealed that the name "Erik Lehnsherr" and the Sinte ethnicity were part of a cover identity, as mentioned above.

5. Magneto's redemption was chronicled in the pages of New Mutants. Uncanny X-Men #150 is the first issue to start developing Magneto's origin as a prisoner of Auschwitz and his marriage to Magda.

6. Magneto's Auschwitz tattoo was originally seen as 214782 in Uncanny X-Men #161. However, this was a number too high for him to have been among the first group of prisoners to be tattooed there. The number was retconned in Excalibur (Vol. 3) #2 to 24005, but appeared again as 214782 in X-Men: Black - Magneto #1.

7. "Eisenhardt", or rather "Eisenhart" means "hard as iron", a convenient name for the Master of Magnetism. It can be pronounced as "ice 'n' heart".

8. Magneto's pseudonym "Lehnsherr" is often pronounced incorrectly as "Lanshir". Actually the name is composed of two German words: "Leh(e)n" meaning "feud" and "Herr" meaning "master" in that instance. In German 's' is a connective between two combined words sometimes. It could be pronounced as "lens hair" ("e" like in "help" but longer).[226] It's the German word for "liege lord".

9. Magneto was ranked 1st on IGN's Top 100 Comic Book Villains in 2011.

10. The album Venus and Mars by Wings included a song about superheroes called "Magneto and Titanium Man". Paul McCartney was said to have toured the Marvel offices soon after the album came out in the Bullpen Bulletins and it was claimed that he was a fan of Marvel Comics. The song referenced the names of two other Marvel villains (Titanium Man and the Crimson Dynamo). Another song to feature Magneto is the Tearjerkers' "Comic Book Heroes" from the various artists' compilation Through the Back Door, in which some of the lyrics were "Doc Ock, Von Doom and Magneto, don't wanna be like them."

11. "Magneto" was a song by the post-hardcore band Brigade, fronted by Charlie Simpson's brother Will.

12. Magneto carries an archive containing a hologram with the names of numerous mutants violently killed.

13. After his encounter with the Phoenix, his powers now more closely resemble the powers of his movie counterpart who is only able to manipulate strictly metallic objects.

14. For much of the original appearance of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, its members kept referring to him as "the Leader", instead of calling him Magneto.

15. Magneto tried to explain to the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants that their personal feelings (and the mutual dislike between team members) are meaningless. In his view, only their plans were important. However, Magneto himself had trouble controlling his anger.

16. The Toad's flattery to Magneto included proclamations that Magneto was born to rule.

17. While Toad loudly proclaimed his loyalty to Magneto, Magneto found him annoying. He threatened Toad to remain silent.

18. In an early battle between the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the X-Men captured the Toad and the Brotherhood captured the Angel. Magneto expressed his belief that their hostage was more valuable than the "high-jumping fool", and was ready to abandon the Toad.

19. Magneto has claimed to be able to sense the greed and envy of a man's heart, even when meeting this man for the first time. He finds it easy to manipulate others through these qualities.

20. To secure victory over the X-Men, Magneto was willing to sacrifice Quicksilver's life in a deadly attack on them. He threatened to kill the Scarlet Witch as well, for defying his orders.

21. While listening to another proclamation of loyalty by the Toad, Magneto contemplated that he did not actually need the loyalty of his followers. He expected to rule over them by using their fear for him. He chose to not share his thought with the other members of the Brotherhood.

22. According to Mastermind, Magneto has no emotions and no heart.

Getting Rowdy: The Unreleased Matches of Roddy Piper

A few months ago I covered the DVD set WWE released chronicling the ‘unseen’ matches of “Macho Man” Randy Savage. Today I continue that trend covering those lines of DVD collections with 2019’s Getting Rowdy: The Unreleased Matches of Roddy Piper (trailer). Like with WWE’s other ‘unreleased’ line of home videos, all the matches and segments featured in here have never been released on video before. With WWE already releasing a comprehensive three-disc DVD set to Piper with 2006’s Born to Controversy, that means we are getting a collection full of deep cuts here. This two disc DVD is compiled similarly to the Randy Savage set where we get original, newly recorded interviews intersperse with the archival content. The interviews are from Piper mega-fan, “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey which are mixed in with archived home video interviews with Piper for added context. There are six sets of Rousey interviews, and they are sporadically inserted throughout the collection which also features 19 matches, nine promos and 12 editions of Piper’s legendary interview show, Piper’s Pit. WWE has established that Rousey is essentially the endorsed successor to carry on the Piper legacy, with Ronda paying homage to “The Hot Rod” by rocking her version of Piper’s entrance attire and carrying on his nickname. With that in mind, having Ronda being the featured new set of interviews to draw from seems like a fitting choice to commemorate Piper’s career here and are nice ways to mix up this collection.

Ronda’s interviews are insightful on how she drew on Roddy for inspiration on MMA needing an antagonist, and how excited she was to finally meet him. I presumed she maintained a close relationship with Piper, and was surprised to learn in Rousey’s interviews here that she only met him once early in her MMA career when she got the blessing from Roddy to use his nickname and then a second time when she appeared on Pipers podcast, which was just a month shy of his death in July of 2015. Rousey went on to say one of her biggest regrets is not having a close relationship with him. There is a nice variety of the nine Piper interviews/promos included. There is a handful of the vintage Rock ‘n Wrestling era promos where Piper bellows out promos in front of a blue screen backdrop. A nice nostalgic bonus is a few vintage commercials where Piper maniacally shouts at you to purchase the latest WWE action figures. There are a few standout go-home PPV interviews here where Piper is on fire and by the end of them he got me just as fired up as Virgil for his upcoming WrestleMania match against Ted Dibiase, and on top of that is an especially intense promo with Bret Hart leading up to their WrestleMania VIII battle. There are three Roddy promos from his late 90’s WCW days, with a bewildering rant from a cell in Alcatrez and Hulk Hogan provoking Piper to cut loose on him and Bishoff in front of his son, Colt, standing out the most. These WCW promos have boisterous crowds capturing the high times WCW was riding at that time in the ‘Monday Night Wars.’

It is no surprise that Piper’s rougher, brawling style will not warrant many five star classics, but a fair amount of his 19 matches here have crowds eating up the chaos Piper is delivering. I have only seen a handful of Piper’s early NWA work before, so seeing a few more of his NWA matches unearthed for this set was a treat, and his match against Jay Youngblood is a smashmouth brawl that goes to a time limit draw, and I loved seeing Piper tag with Ole Anderson against Mike Davis and Buddy Landell. There are a lot of the big arena house show matches here that were previously televised only in local markets, and like a lot of those matches in other sets, usually feature good action until a hokey finish. That is the case here with a killer clash against Paul Orndorff in 1985 fresh into their rivalry, with the crowd going bokers for them until a double countout finish. Just as riveting is Piper’s match in this set against Rick Rude where the crowd is losing it throughout, but a lot of tomfoolery I will not even begin to explain transpires and is the catalyst for one of the strangest DQ finishes I have seen.

Piper teaming with Eddie and Blue-tista, looking like gold! Piper feuding with the nWo had the crowd on its feet! There are two matches on here against Mr. Perfect worth going out of your way to see. I know Mr. Fuji was an accomplished wrestler in the 70s, but never seen him in a match until this set where he is pummeled for a couple minutes against Piper until his fellow managers run in for the save. A lot of the latter matches in the back half of Getting Rowdy are quick TV matches with wonky finishes unfortunately, but for what it is worth, still draw rabid crowd reactions. There are two Nitro bouts included against Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage in 1998, but both bouts have several nWo run-ins that result in both matches being thrown out. I forgot about Piper’s brief 2003 run with Sean ‘O Haire, so it was nice to see those two again when Piper had a short encounter with Rikishi. The last match is an awesome impromptu bout against The Miz for $5000 of The Miz’s money, with Alex Reilly (remember him!?) as guest referee in 2011. I have zero recollection of this match, and even at a couple minutes long it was an absolute delight!

Getting Rowdy was jacked with 24 installments of Piper’s Pit, but WWE had quite a few more to draw upon from the vault with 12 more here. Some of the early ones in this collection that were a riot were where both Jimmy Hart and the Brooklyn Brawler ruthlessly provoke Roddy to giving them a a well-earned beatdown. There are a bunch in the second half of this set when Piper would periodically show up on RAW and SmackDown for a special Piper’s Pit. Two that really got me were one with John Cena where Piper does a tremendous job at needling Cena into living up to his then-current t-shirt slogan, ‘Rise Above Hate’ and another where Roddy moderates AJ Lee attempting to get back into Daniel Bryan’s good graces after costing him his WrestleMania match against Sheamus. I enjoyed this collection more than I anticipated. As I mentioned earlier, Piper was not known for his epic wrestling abilities, so I was not letdown from the wide range of match quality from the 19 matches in the set. There are a few matches that are hidden gems in here for what it is worth, but the real reason everyone should check out Getting Rowdy: The Unreleased Matches of Roddy Piper, is for the many unreleased promos and Piper’s Pit interviews. While he may not have been a five star wrestler, Piper was easily a five star entertainer, and that is readily apparent from beginning to end in this collection.

Those Piper action figure commercials are iconic, and this set is full of iconic promos I have never seen before where the Hot Rod made Virgil look like a million bucks! That’s right, I’m saying that you’re only wasting your time doing this. I don’t look too well? I feel perfectly fine; on the contrary, this is normal, so you don’t have to worry. This happens all the time. Besides, I don’t want you of all people worrying about me. Can’t you leave me alone? 

I said that I’m fine, didn’t I? I’m just a little dizzy; don’t touch me. How persistent. Alright. I turned up for the afternoon classes because I didn’t want Shin-chan worrying about me but I guess I’ll just leave early today. Huh? I don’t need someone to escort me. I’ll be fine alone. I’ll tell Shin-chan to inform the teacher about it later.

I told you not to touch me, didn’t I!? I don’t want to burden someone with the likes of you with such a pathetic version of myself. You’re living with me and my brothers as a potential bridal candidate, but in all honesty, I don’t have even the slightest bit of interest in you.

It’s not like I’ve forgotten about it all being an effort to connect our families together, but as you can see with how stricken with illness I am, this has absolutely nothing to do with me. You must have had some hell of a luck to get yourself involved with a familial war like this.

Don’t go making such a scene when all I’ve done is to simply collapse onto my knees. Your voice really makes my head hurt right now. I already understand so stop making such a fuss about it. I told you that your voice’s really piercing through my head right now, didn’t I? I’ll call the car round the back gate. I guess you can help me till we reach there, at least.

Really. We’ve taken quite a long time to get here due to how slow you are. I really wish you’d try harder if you offered to help me along the way.

Why are you getting into the car as well? I told you that escorting me till this point was enough. Plus, you’re even supporting my back like that...There’s even a limit to what you should and can be doing for someone in your position. I’m...prone to fevers whenever I start wrecking my brain hard enough. I’m sure that even you know that I’m prone to illness.

Yes? Shin-chan? I’m fine. I was just feeling a little light-headed. I’m inside the car right now. I called the car down to pick me up, so everything’s fine. Yeah, I’ll make sure to keep myself warm and sleep it off. And I’ll take my temperature once I reach home. Yeah. I’ll message you once I get home. Come on, don’t worry so much about me. Look, I’ll cut the call now, alright? You’re still in the middle of class right now, aren’t you? You can’t do that! You’re healthy and well, so you’ve got to turn up for classes! I’m a little tired since I spoke so much. 

I’m guessing that’s him calling again. No, it’s fine. Don’t worry about it. He’ll never back down at all even though he should once I start picking up every single one of his calls.

Really, I wish he’ll let me rest in peace for a little while at least. I’m sorry Shin-chan, but I’ll have to kill the battery for a while. Honestly; it seems like there are only worrywarts all around me, what with you and him both fretting over my health like that.

It seems like my fever has risen again thanks to that. I’m starting to blank out. Hey, can I ask a favour from you? There’s fever relief medicine somewhere within my bag; could you get it for me? That’s right. It’s in the pocket over there. I get fevers so often that I’ve taken to carrying the pills with me everywhere I go. There’s a bottle of water there too, right? Could you get that for me as well?

It’s there, isn’t it? Yes, that’s the one. Enough already, just let me drink the water. Yes, you are going to be the one doing it. What other way do you see this happening? How, you ask?  Through your mouth, of course. I’m about as fatigued and boneless as you can see, so there’s a high chance I’ll spill the water everywhere if I tried.

Ahh, you’ve finally awakened. You’ve been asleep for a long time. I doubt that the medicine had that strong of a side-effect though. I doubt you’ll remember it anyway but I’ll just say this; those soft toys over there aren’t mine. They’re all things that Shin-chan brought over and left here all of his own accord. I don’t know where he bought those things, but he kept on bringing them over despite me telling him that it was embarrassing to have those in my room. He’s a really troublesome brother. I really do want to toss them out, but I can’t do it since he comes into my room at least 3 times per day on a daily basis. He’ll bring twice the amount of plushies back into my room if he notices that the amount in here was lessened even a little.

I don’t want my room looking any more stupid than it already is. Besides, it does take quite some patience to play the role of a cute brother. However...that act ends here as well. Thank you for asking!  I assume this is for RWBY, but will also answer for HTTYD as well since both are my main fandoms.  This turned out a bit long, so kept most of it under the cut.

19. What is one thing you hate most about your fandom?

For RWBY... there’s a lot I dislike.  I think the biggest issue, however, is how generally dismissive if not outright hostile subgroups of the fandom are to others.  Be it for how people feel about certain characters, whether they consider post-vol 3 personally canon, and especially what ships they like.  I know these are issues with many fandoms, but holy fuck, it feels like RWBY ramps it up to eleven sometimes.

For HTTYD, this was a bit trickier, but I think... it’s the massive divide that happened after Race to the Edge, and to a lesser extent, The Hidden World.  I’m not a fan of the latter and don’t regard it as canon, and there have been many that have argued RTTE isn’t canon either, but gods I recall the big feuds and how many people ended up leaving just because people were butthurt about what they considered as having happened.  I kinda wish we all just... got along and talked about what we liked about each part of the franchise more and bonded over that... though, I guess I should also do that as well... ^^;

16. What would you change in the show?

Easy, I wouldn’t have killed off Pyrrha.  Others have gone on about why her death doesn’t really do much in the grand scheme of thing instead of being the big event that was totally necessary, especially with Penny being back and having zero negative impact from being cut to pieces on accident.  Instead, I’ll just say that there would have been a lot more potential having her get through the fall of Beacon, injured but alive.  We could have seen her deal with the fallout of her actions, her status as the ‘invincible girl’ stripped away in the worst possible manner, and have her reflect on destiny, what she wants out of life, and what she is willing to do and give up to get it... but instead we have ashes in the wind with only a sliver of hope that she is somehow brought back.

For HTTYD... I guess for starters, I’d give Astrid have more of a role in both the TV show and HTTYD 2.  I’ve stated before that I dislike that Astrid is more or less relegated to the sidelines in the second film, and it’s a bummer that she has a paltry handful of episodes that focus on her, especially with how many we got just on Fishlegs and him dealing with his cowardice for the umpteenth time.  Additionally, would have developed the romance betwen Astrid and Hiccup in the show more instead of having them not be a couple until the third quarter of the series when they were already shown to be a couple prior, but that’s more nitpicking than anything.  Oh, also, would have ended the third film with many of the dragons staying or otherwise living outside of the Hidden world, if not just only make Toothless go.

9. Most disliked character(s)?  Why?

Cinder, Cinder, Cinder, FUCKING CINDER!!  ASIDE from killing off one of my favorite characters of the show and generally fucking everything up, I just hate this character’s general personality and how they carry themselves.  I also hate how they keep coming back.  At this point it’s kind of a joke, especially since she’s both one of the most powerful characters with her maiden powers, and at the same time one of the most ineffectual.  Her only personal big victory was killing Pyrrha off, and after that she can barely manage to do much of anything aside from being an annoyance.  What bugs me even more are fans that clamber for her to have some manner of redemption, like... no, no she doesn’t deserve one, not after everything she’s done and tried to do.

For HTTYD, I hate to say it, but it’s Fishlegs.  I don’t straight up hate and despise him like I do Cinder, but he’s easily my least favorite of the primary cast.  Think part of it is his design.  It’s not that he’s a chunky lad, Gobber is also heavy set and he’s up there with some of my favorites, but Fishlegs has these weird proportions and shapes.  No neck, his head basically jutting out of the top front of a blocky torso, giaaaaaaaaaaant arms that nearly touch the ground, and teeny wheeny legs.  It also doesn’t help that his character can be surmised as ‘cowardly bookwarm/nerd’ and his episodes usually revolve around the same handful of issues.  It would be a bit better if he had less of them, but gods he gets a bit too much screentime in the TV series.  Also, he rides probably the least interesting dragon species to me, so that also doesn’t help.

Welcome to a weekly collaboration between FiveThirtyEight and ABC News. With 5,000 people seemingly thinking about challenging President Trump in 2020 — Democrats and even some Republicans — we’re keeping tabs on the field as it develops. Each week, we’ll run through what the potential candidates are up to — who’s getting closer to officially jumping in the ring and who’s getting further away.

This week, the presidential field grew more diverse with the entrance of Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

Harris — who was born to an Indian mother and Jamaican father — announced her presidential campaign on “Good Morning America” and Buttigieg — who could make history as the nation’s first openly gay presidential nominee of a major party — posted video about his forming an exploratory committee on Wednesday.

They join a growing and diverse field of Democratic hopefuls, a cadre that could prove too large for a single debate at the first opportunity in June. Anticipating a crowded field, Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez revealed in December that the DNC would set thresholds, including polling and fundraising targets, to pare down the first group of candidates, then “draw lots,” should the group still be too large. However, the DNC has yet to reveal specific targets for those thresholds, but some figures — including Harris, who aides tell ABC News brought in $1.5 million in her first day as a candidate — are already clearly aiming for one of the coveted spots.

Michael Bennet (D)

The Colorado senator attracted attention Thursday when he criticized fellow Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. Bennet labeled Cruz’s current government shutdown-related concerns “crocodile tears,” and reminded Cruz of actions that led to a 2013 shutdown while Bennet’s home state was dealing with flooding.

Asked on MSNBC Thursday afternoon whether he was running for president, Bennet said he was “thinking about it … like every other person in [the Senate.]”

Joe Biden (D)

At a National Action Network Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast in Washington, Biden said that white Americans need to acknowledge and admit the fact that systemic racism still exists and must be rooted out.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that in a paid speech given by Biden in Michigan in October, the former vice president praised Republican Rep. Fred Upton, who then went on to defeat his Democratic opponent. The remarks were criticized by local Democrats, who saw it as a damaging error, according to the Times report. On Friday, at the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Biden defended the speech, explaining that he was proud of Upton’s work on a cancer research funding bill and argued that not everything should be viewed through the lens of partisanship.

Michael Bloomberg (D)

Bloomberg spoke at a National Action Network Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast in Washington on Monday, during which he joked he would ask former Vice President Joe Biden, who was also in attendance, for tips on living in Washington. He added, of himself and Biden: “I know we’ll both keep our eyes on the real prize, and that is electing a Democrat to the White House in 2020, and getting our country back on track.”

The former New York City mayor faced criticism from Democrats this week after defending the use of stop-and-frisk policing during a speech at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland Tuesday, and labeling efforts to legalize marijuana “perhaps the stupidest thing we’ve ever done.”

Cory Booker (D)

The New Jersey senator spoke at a South Carolina statehouse rally on Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday after brief stops over the weekend in Louisiana and Georgia. In Georgia, Booker met with former President Jimmy Carter and the pair appeared on an Instagram Live video. “I’m very glad to have you here this morning, and I hope you come back,” Carter said to Booker. “And I hope you run for president.”

Sherrod Brown (D)

On Wednesday, Brown told MSNBC that he continues to “very seriously” consider a presidential campaign. As has been the case in past interviews on the subject, the Ohio senator referred to the importance of Democrats competing in the center of the country and a focus on employment and job conditions.

“To win Ohio, to win the industrial Midwest, the heartland, and the Electoral College you’ve got to speak to the progressive base, to be sure, as I have my whole career, but you’ve got to talk to workers and live where they live,” he said, later echoing the sentiment on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” where he said his party can’t choose between progressives and workers, but represent both groups.

Brown kicks off his “Dignity of Work” tour in Cleveland on Wednesday, followed by a visit to Iowa Thursday.

Pete Buttigieg (D)

Buttigieg announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee Wednesday, with the 37-year-old South Bend, Indiana mayor explaining that he felt it was time for a generational shift in the nation’s leadership.

“I belong to a generation that is stepping forward right now,” Buttigieg said in a video announcing the committee, “We’re the generation that lived through school shootings, that served in the wars after 9/11. And we’re the generation that stands to be the first to make less than our parents, unless we do something different.”

Asked Wednesday by KCBS about potential concerns about his youth and experience, Buttigieg said his two terms as mayor and service in the Navy were more executive and military experience than President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

Julian Castro (D)

Castro spent Martin Luther King Jr. Day in San Antonio, where he took part in the city’s parade, marching alongside his brother Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas.

An adviser to Castro told The Daily Beast that the former Housing and Urban Development secretary’s campaign already formulated workplace harassment policies and that it would support unionization among its staffers, should they decide to do so.

John Delaney (D)

Delaney spent last weekend in New Hampshire at multiple meet-and-greet events and attended the Concord Women’s March. After speaking with reporters and editors at the Nashua Telegraph last Friday, the newspaper’s editorial board described the former Maryland congressman as “somewhat impressive.”

Tulsi Gabbard (D)

In an interview with CNN Sunday, Gabbard said she did not regret her 2017 meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, arguing that it is “very important for any leader in this country to be willing to meet with others, whether they be friends or adversaries or potential adversaries if we are serious about the pursuit of peace and securing our country.”

Eric Garcetti (D)

Garcetti helped facilitate negotiations in the Los Angeles teacher strike, which ended in a deal that the mayor called “a historic agreement.”

Jeff Flake (R)

At a Vanderbilt University panel, Flake criticized the Republican Party for moving away from “traditional conservatism.” He also said, “The Trump base is very real, very solid, but politically it’s just not large enough to carry ahead. I say that’s a good thing.”

Despite his differences with the president, Flake said at the event, “I hope we don’t go through an impeachment process because of what it does to a divided public.”

Kirsten Gillibrand (D)

In her first week since the announcement of her presidential exploratory committee, Gillibrand visited Iowa, where she addressed the Des Moines Women’s March Saturday. The New York senator addressed allegations of anti-Semitism against two of the Women’s March leaders, saying that there was “no room for anti-Semitism” in the movement and that the movement is empowered when everyone lifts each other.

At additional stops across Iowa, Gillibrand explained the moderate positions dotting her past, including her former defense of the Second Amendment: “I had only really looked at guns through the lens of hunting. My mom still shoots the Thanksgiving turkey,” she said, later noting that the NRA now gives her an F rating.

On Monday, Gillibrand spoke at the National Action Network’s King Day Public Policy Forum in New York, invoking the Bible as she discussed “speak[ing] truth to power,” in a moment that NAN’s founder Al Sharpton characterized as “preaching.”

Kamala Harris (D)

Harris officially announced Monday that she is running for president, telling ABC’s “Good Morning America” that she feels “a sense of responsibility to stand up and fight for the best of who we are” and that she’s confident in her “ability to lead” and “listen and to work on behalf of the American public.” She then grabbed a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, before heading back to Washington and answering questions from reporters at her alma mater, Howard University.

In the 24 hours following her announcement, aides to Harris told ABC News their campaign raised $1.5 million from 38,000 donors.

The California senator hits the campaign trail starting Friday in South Carolina to speak at an event held by a local chapter of her sorority. On Sunday, Harris will hold a campaign launch event in Oakland, then on Monday she’ll participate in a CNN townhall in Iowa.

John Hickenlooper (D)

On Sunday, the former Colorado governor is visiting Iowa for a stop at a house party and a local brewery, one of his advisers told ABC News. On Tuesday, he told CNN that he would decide whether to run for president by March, and that he could separate himself for the field by sharing his bipartisan record.

“I’m probably one of the few, if not the only candidate who’s actually been able to bring people together who were in conflict, they were feuding, and get them to put down their weapons, take the time to hear each other and then actually achieve progressive goals through their willingness to work together and create a compromise,” Hickenlooper said.

Jay Inslee (D)

The Washington governor visited New Hampshire Tuesday to speak with students at Dartmouth and Saint Anselm colleges. He spent much of his time talking about climate change, an issue he claimed wasn’t being highlighted by other possible presidential nominees.

“Here’s an existential threat to the United States, and they do their rollouts and the words ‘climate change’ don’t appear,” he said.

Inslee also told the Associated Press that he’s been emailing with the billionaire Tom Steyer, a fellow environmentalist who recently passed on a presidential run of his own, but who has not committed to supporting another candidate.

John Kasich (R)

Kasich repeated a position he’s shared before when asked about a potential 2020 run during a question and answer session at the University of Florida Wednesday: “If I can’t win, I’m not going to do it,” he said.

The former Ohio governor wrote an op-ed for the Boston Globe to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. He decried the political division that led to the ongoing government shutdown and called upon Americans to take personal action to better their communities.

“Instead of sitting around worrying about what’s broken and not working in Washington, we’ve got to get off the couch and figure out what we can do by ourselves — right here at home, where we live. Volunteer at the food bank. Engage with your schools if something needs to be fixed. Drop in on a neighbor who has no one else to listen,” he wrote. “The opportunities are there, but we need to grasp them. That’s the cure for the breakdown in Washington.”

John Kerry (D)

Asked during a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, if he had any message for Trump, Kerry answered that he should “resign.”

Amy Klobuchar (D)

Klobuchar delivered last week’s weekly Democratic address, criticizing Trump for “holding the hardworking people of America hostage by requiring them to pay ransom to reopen their government,” referring to Trump’s insistence on the inclusion of border wall funding in any appropriations bill to end the government shutdown.

Mitch Landrieu (D)

Landrieu spoke to MSNBC Wednesday where he discussed the government shutdown, saying, “The president is way stuck on stupid right now.”

“There is no mayor in America in his right mind, or her right mind, that would ever think about shutting down the government,” the former New Orleans mayor continued. “This is why the people of America are really frustrated with Washington.”

Terry McAuliffe (D)

Though he didn’t definitively commit to the race, McAuliffe told the New York Posts’s Page Six of a presidential run: “It’s not easy — but I’m a heck of a fighter.”

The Associated Press dug into McAuliffe’s PAC’s 2018 spending and found that it raised over $300,000 in the second half of 2018 and spent money on donations to the state Democratic parties of New Hampshire and Iowa — expenditures that a spokesperson maintains said were not related to a presidential campaign.

“Funds from Common Good were used to support governor candidates and state parties across the country who share Governor McAuliffe’s values,” Carson told the AP, adding that the PAC is closing.

Jeff Merkley (D)

In an interview with the Associated Press, Merkley said he would decide on a presidential run before the end of April.

Beto O’Rourke (D)

O’Rourke continued his tour of the American heartland, visiting Kansas and Colorado this week and blogging about it — to some mockery — along the way.

The New York Times reported Saturday that some Democrats were perturbed by O’Rourke’s individualistic style, and his merely lukewarm embrace of fellow Texas Democrat Gina Ortiz-Jones during the midterms.

Mother Jones dug up a video of O’Rourke covering The Ramones in a onesie and a sheep mask.

Bernie Sanders (D)

Sanders spoke at a rally at South Carolina’s statehouse on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and remained in the Palmetto State for three additional events on Tuesday. During a NAACP forum he said of a presidential campaign, “I’m going to look at it; I’m going to assess it.”

In a GQ profile Thursday, Sanders detailed what he felt his 2016 presidential campaign was able to achieve, even without capturing the Democratic nomination. ““We have had more success in ideologically changing the party than I would have dreamed possible,” he said. “The world has changed.”

Howard Schultz (D)

Advisers to the former Starbucks CEO are probing the possibility of an independent presidential campaign, The Washington Post reported last Friday, citing two sources with knowledge of the conversations. CNN matched the story Monday, quoting a source who said Schultz is “thinking deeply about his future and how he can best serve the country.”

Eric Swalwell (D)

Swalwell visited South Carolina Saturday to speak at the Greenville Women’s March and a gala for the Spartanburg County Democratic Party. During the day, he told the Spartanburg Herald Journal that he is “getting close to deciding” about a presidential run and discussed the role that the state will play in deciding the Democratic nominee.

“Any presidential contender better come through Spartanburg County if they are going to be in the White House,” he said. “It’s a steep mountain to climb for a Democrat in South Carolina since the state is mostly Republican.”

Elizabeth Warren (D)

Though still only in the exploratory committee phase, Warren continues to travel. She held an organizing event in New Hampshire last Friday, attended a Martin Luther King Jr. Day memorial breakfast in Boston Monday, visited Puerto Rico for a “community conversation” Tuesday, and visited South Carolina for another organizing event Wednesday. Friday, Warren stops in Las Vegas for an additional organizing event.

The Massachusetts senator was asked about the state of the presidential race in a CNN interview Tuesday, demurring when questioned whether she was “too far to the left.”

“I’m out talking about the economic issues, about how government works, about what’s happening to middle class families, working families, all across this country — why the path has gotten rockier and rockier. This is what I’ve worked on all of my life,” Warren said. “I’m delighted that there are lots of Democrats who want to talk about ideas, who want to talk about a way to build a stronger America; I believe in that.

Andrew Yang (D)

Yang, an entrepreneur, was interviewed by Rolling Stone this week about his under-the-radar campaign, where he explained why he was running for president.

“I was stunned when I saw the disparities between Detroit and San Francisco or Cleveland and Manhattan. You feel like you’re traveling across dimensions and decades and not just a couple of time zones,” he said. “None of our political leaders are willing to acknowledge the elephant in the room that is tearing our communities apart, in the form of technological change.”

He additionally outlined a key component of his platform: a universal basic income of $1,000 per month for all Americans 18 and older, which would be funded by a value-added tax, explaining: “If you have a town in Missouri with 50,000 adults and they’re all getting $1,000 a month, that’s another $50 million in purchasing power that comes right into that town’s local economy — into car repairs, tutoring or food for your kids, the occasional night out, home repairs. And that money ends up circulating all through that town.”

Police arrest man suspected of killing Nipsey Hussle

LOS ANGELES – The man accused of gunning down rapper Nipsey Hussle in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles is under arrest, police announced Tuesday.

Nipsey Hussle and the man suspected of killing him, 29-year-old Eric Holder, knew each other, and the shooting appears to be the product of a personal dispute, Los Angeles police Chief Michel Moore told reporters Tuesday morning.

Moore declined to elaborate on the feud between the two, saying he didn’t want to jeopardize any potential prosecution, but he said the suspect — who has been identified via surveillance video — approached Nipsey and others multiple times, engaging them in conversation.

At one point, Holder returned with a handgun and “purposely and repeatedly fired” at the men, injuring two of them and killing the rapper, he said.

Rapper was more movement than musician

Though the rapper was a member of an arm of the Crips street gang and police believe Holder belongs to a gang as well, Moore declined to specify any gang affiliation and said the dispute between the two does not appear gang-related.

Video shows shooting

The manhunt for Holder unfolded as surveillance video emerged showing the moment Nipsey and two others were shot Sunday afternoon.

The Grammy-nominated artist was among four people standing between cars outside The Marathon Clothing store he owned in Los Angeles’ Hyde Park neighborhood, video from a surveillance camera trained on the parking lot shows.

It is not clear which of the four is Nipsey, but they appear to be casually talking as others mill about in front of the store. A figure dressed in dark clothing appears to approach the four, and everyone scatters.

Two of the people standing by the car don’t get far. They fall to the ground. One of them, wearing a white hat and shirt, tries to get back up but promptly collapses, the video, which has no sound, shows.

It is not clear if the figure in dark clothing is Holder, who police say is wanted in the homicide.

Vigil goes awry

Late Monday, about 300 people gathered around a candlelight memorial in The Marathon Clothing parking lot, feet from where the rapper was shot, when a person with a gun spurred the mourners to take off in every direction, police said.

There were initial reports of gunshots, but police quickly knocked down those reports. Moore acknowledged that two women showed up at a hospital late Monday night saying they had been shot at the vigil, but he said one of his commanders was near the scene and heard no gunshots.

“I’m lacking information that a shooting occurred,” the chief said.

The crowd fled, he said, after someone at the vigil produced a handgun and another person tried to disarm the individual. A stampede ensued.

Los Angeles police spokeswoman Meghan Aguilar described it to CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS as “absolutely chaotic, mass panic.”

“When we were watching it from footage from overhead, it was literally people scattered in all directions,” she said.

The panic came about 8:15 p.m., Moore said, and “as (the crowd) fled, we had a series of falls and trips and injuries.” One individual was stabbed in the melee, but police have no suspect, he said.

Video from KCAL/KCBS shows mourners abruptly running through and around the candle-and-balloon memorial and into the street. Police with riot gear and batons begin forming containment lines.

Some present threw rocks and bottles at police officers, and an officer suffered a “serious cut” to his hand, requiring sutures, Moore said. At least one person was detained for disorderly conduct, Aguilar said.

Nineteen people were transported to the hospital, most of them with trample injuries, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. Two suffered critical injuries, and two more were hurt seriously. One person was hit by a car, the department said.

None of the injured people suffered gunshot wounds, Los Angeles police said.

Police ID car and alleged shooter

The grainy video of Nipsey’s shooting does not provide much in the way of detail, but police late Monday offered additional information about the shooting.

At about 3:20 p.m. Sunday, the suspect walked up to the men standing in the parking lot and opened fire, police said. He then ran down an alley and jumped into the passenger side of a car driven by an unidentified woman, they said.

The car was a white, four-door 2016 Chevrolet Cruze with the California license plate 7RJD742, police said.

Two people were transported to the hospital; one refused treatment at the scene, and Nipsey died from gunshots to the head and torso, authorities said.

The 33-year-old rhymesmith was a mainstay of the Crenshaw District where he grew up. He owned businesses there, invested in the community and counted several Los Angeles rappers among his influences and collaborators.

Two of his mixtapes — “Slauson Boy Vol. 1” and “Crenshaw” — took their names from the area. The Marathon Clothing store sits near West Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard. Though Nipsey released several mixtapes independently or through his All Money In record label, his studio debut, “Victory Lap,” dropped last year and was nominated for a Grammy.

Before his death, Nipsey, a member of the Rollin 60s Neighborhood Crips, had requested a meeting to discuss ways to mitigate gang violence, Los Angeles police Commissioner Steve Soboroff said Tuesday, sharing an email he received from the rapper and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation.

It said, “Our goal is to work with the department to help improve communication relationships, and work towards changing the culture and dialogue between LAPD and the inner city. We want to hear about your new programs, your goals for the department, as well as how we can help stop gang violence and help you help kids.”

“The meeting will happen,” Soboroff said. “It will happen when Roc Nation and Nipsey’s family come together.”

August/Labor Day 2018 -*PlayLi$t of the Month*

A summer that began with fireworks is now a wrap...

Folks, the last month of the summer for me has been busy. Between work, family, and a beautiful vacation to Ireland, I have not had a lot of time to write, or even truly absorb so much of the new music that has dropped in the last two months. That being said, there were more than enough potent releases in late July/August to warrant a summer close-out list with plenty of fire power!

It is ironic that a summer that kicked off with a Drake vs. Pusha T beef dominating the headlines, has drawn to a close with some of the pettiest of mainstream squabbles in recent memory. So here’s some straight talk from The Pundit: I couldn’t care less about any “feud” between Nicki Minaj and Travis Scott, and I wasn’t really moved by either of their albums. Nor do I care about Eminem trying to turn back the clock to be regain former glory at this point in his career, because I find Kamikaze to be a boring album of rants and forced threats over forgettable production, and it fails to capture even a glimpse of the greatness he showcased on his early work. 

But I digress.. :-) While the mainstream may have been mostly “meh”, the underground realm was boiling over with a wealth of talent in August. I invite you to enjoy my SUMMER SLAM 2018 EDITION, LABOR DAY PLAYLIST...

(Term’s new album is stacked with plenty of bangers, but this one takes the cake. The underground veterans contribute stand-out verses, but it’s Crimeapple closes the track out with one of the summer’s strongest verses. Keep an eye out for Crimeapple, he has already accumulated an impressive set of spotlight stealing appearances this year.)

2. “Golden Fleece” - Ka & Animoss a.k.a. Hermit and the Recluse

(Only a gifted writer like Ka could pull off multiple dope thematic rap albums without sounding preachy, or sacrificing musicality, so the high quality of Orpheus vs. the Sirens should come as no surprise. The whole project is fantastic, and the lyrics are a feast for the ears throughout, but Animoss delivered one of his finest instrumentals with “Golden Fleece”.)

3. “Wet Ear Yungin” - Tuamie & Koncept Jack$on feat. Nickelus F

(Mutant Academy had a HUGE month. Tuamie’s steady hand helped insure that Emergency Raps Vol. 3 was one of the Virginia-based collective’s strongest efforts. A verse from Richmond’s own Nickelus F is more than enough to secure a placement near the top of my list, but it also doesn’t hurt that Koncept is rapidly becoming one of the best MCs in the underground scene right now.)

(Camino remains one of Griselda’s secret weapons, and he more than proved his ability to stand on his own two with this new Walking On Water project. “Rosemary” is an emotional dedication to Camino’s late grandmother, and a great example of how even on a low budget, raw honesty over a simple, soulful loop can make for impactful music.)

(I wish Astroworld had more joints that sounded like this one...experimental, but focused production that doesn’t come at the expense of rap skills. Atlanta’s Reese LaFlare doesn’t bring a new set of skills to the trap table, but he’s strong enough as a rapper with an ear for beats to grab anyone’s attention with songs like “Mood Ring”. And a new verse from Push certainly helps!)

7. “Talk In Code” - Fly Anakin & Big Kahuna OG
