Tumblr media
Nat liked to keep her work life and personal life separate. She liked protecting you from the horrors of her job but she also liked keeping you to herself. The paradise you both have built together over the years was sacred to her and she didn't need anyone disturbing the peace. The little cottage the two of you bought in the California country side became her safe haven. The lawn full of colorful wild flowers that you took care of was heaven on earth to Nat.
After her and Bob were forced to eject the navy granted her a few days off to recover and make sure she was healthy enough for the upcoming mission.
At first she didn't want to take time away from her training but watching you garden in the yellow sun dress and sun hat she bought you made it all worth it. You were her little garden fairy and she loved watching you work your magic.
Unknown to you or Natasha the rest of her squad decided to pay her a visit to check on her and keep her company. Both of you were in your own world and didn't hear the cars pulling into you gravel driveway. But the both of you were snapped back to reality by a loud holler of your wife's call sign.
"Phoenix! How you feeling? We all came to k-" Roosters words die on his tongue as he sees you standing next to Nat.
"Hey I'm Rooster" he quickly says as he shakes your hand before telling Nat he is sorry and that they didn't know she had company over.
The rest of the squad walks over while looking at you yard in wonder.
"Well hello gorgeous, the names Hangman. And who might you be?"
"Back off Bagman she's not interested." Nat says firmly.
"Everyone this is my wife y/n" Nat says while pulling you closer to her by your hips. You shuffle closer to Nat scared the someone would say something rude.
Maverick is the first one to speak up. "Well it's nice to finally meet you y/n." He says while shaking your hand as everyone agrees and gets in line to I produce themselves.
"Hey Bob!" You say after spotting your wife's back seater having met him while him and Nat were in the ER.
He gives you a big smile before Nat invites everyone inside for beers, and in you and Bobs case, lemonade.
As you start to head inside you are suddenly pulled back by Nat.
"See I knew they would like you. Nothing to worry about Baby." Nat says as she kisses you.

Why did you elbow me? 149
Achilles Castle part 51
The pharmacy part 3
Lanie: pov a police officer named Seth is calling me he says it's about Kate there was a hostage situation at the pharmacy. Everything is okay but it seems Kate started to have a heart episode and fainted. She was given her meds and is doing better as a precaution she is being taken to the ER. I mention she can't have caffeine, black licorice or grapefruit Seth is riding in the ambulance with her. I let the boys and Castle know what is going on.
Castle: pov I have been informed by Lanie that Kate was in a hostage situation at the pharmacy and since she is having a heart episode she is being taken to the ER as a precaution.
Paramedic Lucas: pov she did okay the whole ambulance ride. We transfer her onto the gurney/exam table in the trauma room. Seth decided to stay until Lanie can get to the er. Thanks to Lanie I was informed Kate has PTSD.
Kate: pov officer Seth is still with me holding my hand trying to comfort me saying Lanie should be here soon. I'm just so tired, I can barely stay awake.
Cardiologist Steinbeck: pov the paramedics relay Kate's condition and what they know so far. Seth tells us what Lanie told them on the phone. From what I'm told she has a heart condition and has had previous heart surgery and severe chest trauma in the past. I give her more meds to try and stabilize her. Kate's vitals are looking okay for now and her breathing and heart rate are stabilizing which is good. We need to figure out what caused this. Her medical records list a Dr Burkett, who we call. Kate says gum, I ask if she means gun she says no gum. Oh do you think it's what caused this.
Police officer Seth: pov a nurse went to get an ultrasound machine for the Echocardiogram. I'm supposed to try and keep Kate awake. Once the ultrasound machine is in the room the nurse starts setting it up first they want to do an EKG and blood work. Once that is done the Dr lifts up her shirt a little to put the gel on her chest. My wife had a few of these when she was pregnant. He starts to move the wand over her chest and heart, I notice it's beating weird and looks funny. DR Steinbeck says it's scar tissue it sometimes develops after trauma like she had. He mentions you can see her heart is still not beating 100 percent right. She is being admitted for observation. Lanie arrives with Kate's husband Rick.
Castle: pov we arrive at the ER and the receptionist says Kate is in room 335 on the cardiac ward. Seth, who is a police officer, is sitting in the chair next to her bed. I thank him for everything. Since Kate is asleep me and Lanie decided to talk to the Dr treating her. Seth is heading home to be with his wife who is pregnant and their child. I tell Seth our friend Ryan is also going to be a dad again. Cardiologist Steinbeck tells us Kate is stable, right now with the meds and she is sleeping. It looks like she held off on giving herself her medicine. He mentions how they want to monitor her for a bit, since her heart rate was spiking even with the meds earlier. They are still trying to figure out what caused this but from what Kate said it might have to do with some gum she ate.
Cardiologist Steinbeck: pov we have her on fluids for now, if it was because of gum the fluids will flush it out. I walk into her room and check on her monitors. They both are spending the night with her. We won't get her blood work back until tonight or tomorrow. She has a special scan/test scheduled for tomorrow that includes dye.
Lanie: pov Kate is sleeping so well. The meds she got are strong. Me and Castle get comfortable for the night. A nurse who I know hands me a pillow and blanket the same with Castle. A few times during the night a nurse came into check on Kate. In the morning I sneak out of the room to talk to Dr Steinbeck. He says he was just coming to tell us Kate's blood work came back and caffeine was present. He says some gums have caffeine in them. It looks like the gum was what caused this. He wants to check on her before her test this morning.
Kate: pov I'm starting to wake up and my alarm won't quiet down oh no I'm going to be late for work I immediately sit up to get out of bed. Suddenly Castle is holding me down saying it's okay your at the hospital don't move, wouldn't want you to unplug the monitors. It's all starting to come back to me what happened yesterday, ugh.
Cardiologist Steinbeck: pov hi Kate glad to see you are up, I'm the Dr that treated you. I just want to check your vitals and stuff. Lanie can you help her sit up so I can listen to her heart and lungs. Her breathing is much better, I think she can lose the oxygen for a few minutes after her scans, see how it goes. If everything still looks good she can lose it for good, she has scans in 30 minutes. Oh and Kate don't ever wait to take your medicine again. She says something about priority of life, Tina was pregnant and went into labor. Priority of life means Tina gets taken care of first no matter what is happening to herself.
Lanie: pov a nurse injects the dye into her Iv and says she will be back in a few minutes. She says it might make Kate feel weird. Castle is updating everyone while I'm with Kate. A nurse comes and wheels Kate's gurney to the scan room; she is then placed on the part that goes into the machine. Me and Dr Steinbeck are in the booth with the technician from what I can see on the monitor. Everything looks okay. Her pericardium, left pulmonary vein and left ventricle have scar tissue, so does her chest. The scar tissue looks the same which is good. The scar tissue makes it hard for her heart to work well, it is even worse during her arrhythmia, ventricular tachycardia to be exact. The right side looks okay but during her episodes of arrhythmia the right ventricle struggles to keep up. To be continued. ………..

People from memorial day (the ones I remember)
Older woman maybe 70s states she's been more clumsy the last couple of days and now her left leg doesn't want to work right and has tingles in her left hand. She was a stroke alert and ended up having a HUGE brain mass but no stroke.
Another older lady who was in fact having a stroke with last known normal time of like 2hrs before she came in.
Frequenty flier. I'll call her groaning lady. She was admitted last week with DKA and a blood glucose of 1149 or something. Comes back to the er probably 2 hours after discharge still in gown with her band still on complaining of high blood sugar but she didnt give a number.
Middle aged guy says his wife got great care from us before and trusted us to take care of him. States he has dull generalized abdominal pain for like 3-4 days now and today it's sharp and just above his right hip. Oh and he has nausea/vomiting. After scans, my suspicions were confirmed. It was appendicitis.
Younger woman with muffled hearing. She used ear drops from previous infection and it kinda helped but they're so swollen she can't get drops in anymore. Double ear infection 😫
The allergic reaction to wasp stings. Had 3 or 4 stings in one spot and it was too much for the epi pen to manage. She stayed for like 2 hours after treatment to make sure her throat didn't close and then left. The charge nurse kept trying to get her a bed even though she felt fine.
The sheer amount of people that think they need to come to the er cause they or their child puked ONCE in like 24 hours. But hey, EMTALA says we can't send them away. We also can't say no to the people that have a sore throat or sinus pressure.
The lady that screamed at us in the lobby while threatening to sue because she saw a doctor before she saw a nurse and we can't discharge unless they get vitals charted by a nurse. She had congestion and clearly didn't need to stay as she was able to yell and scream at a coworker and me for 30 mins.
The lady who thought she was having a heart attack cause she couldn't breathe. Ekg revealed it was a panic attack.
This is understandable. Kid fell in pool, wasn't in for very long and he's walking acting normal but he's nonverbal autistic. Parents brought him in to make sure he was OK since he can't respond.
The lady who broke up a fight between her dogs and I put it in as a finger wound so they wouldn't go after her dogs. Her middle finger had a chunk missing.
EMS brought us a younger male OD and they gave him 6 doses IV/IM narcan. How much is enough? Apparently 6 doses.
The sad babies that now have RSV because their siblings have it and it's just sad 😔
The mom that brought her kid in for constipation and checked herself in for like the same thing. She had a muscle strain. Got discharged, went to the car, and came back complaining of chest tightness/shoulder pain but wouldn't pull her dress up for an EKG.
At one point we walked a group of like 4 patients back to pediatrics cause they won't open our pedi er entrance. And as soon as I got them back there, i had 3 more to go back.
The lady with 4 children in the lobby that hasn't had her period for 2 months. Thinks our tests are better than the drugstore?
Nausea while 32 weeks pregnant? Not an ER issue. That's an L&D issue cause that baby could pop.
I may think of more and add it to a new post but jeez we saw lots of people and our normal capacity is only like 30 something even though we have lots more beds. Pedi is like 15-20 beds and adult er has 2 triage rooms, 4 trauma rooms, 6 bed vertical ED, 5 bed BHU, and then I think it's 48 or 50 single bed rooms. We just don't have the staffing or the need to keep it all open all the time. We shoulda opened intake though. It hides some patients from the lobby view.

Author's Notes ♡:Sooooo I wrote this once with no mythological background and it was so blank because one I half read and two it had no pizzazz. So here I am...enjoying this collab wholeheartedly. For some context the readers dad is Dionysus, yknow the festive, wine maker? So I tried to incorporate that with being a potions maker! Rappa is based on a mix between Behemoths and the Kusarikku, so i wanted him just a big and a bull man hybrid but not fully a Minotaur! I hope whoever reads this enjoy it as much as I did writing it! (Also I’m slowly realizing how much I hope this man)~ bunny ❥
Here’s the lovely masterlist of the others beautiful arts!
Warnings : NSFW again! (◎_◎;)
A use of pet names l, uh some heavy size kink (if you know who I based him on, also is one of my kinks showing yet) , Needy Rappa, breeding, Light cursing, a bit of a pussy job, female oral and a bit of overstimulation.
Word count : About 6.5k (ooof) !
Paring(s) : Bullman! Kendo Rappa x F!Reader
Summary : Being a demigod had perks, you could travel, you had god and goddesses as siblings and family members and of course the power! But what happens when you have to help a stubborn farm...pet?
Enjoy ♡

Growing up as a demigods daughter who owned a garden on earth was one experience. All types of people, gods, goddesses and hybrids needed her experience with all sorts of plants and other things from nature ; rather it be for healing medicines , a bouquet for an upset lover or for help with livestock growth, [ ] and her parents helped with every little working class they could. As [ ] went from child to young adult she was used to her fair share of men from every place asking for her attention. A human asking for her hand and giving her the bare minimum, a god, wanting to make her a goddess, or just simply flirting to warrant her attention. But alas to them all she gave them no leadway, keeping her same polite smile and overall sweetness to each and every person she dealt with. On a warm day in the heavens as she walked the sky castles grounds she ran into a farmhand, one she remembered worked for Demeter approached her hesitantly, his eyes wandering to the young maidens “U-uh M-miss [ ] right?” The male asked her , her eyebrow raising as a silent answer “Lady Demeter would like to speak with you, she need some help but she did not tell me exactly what” he said with a bow and soon turned to leave. Wondering what the goddess could want she headed to her ranch, watching the cattle and other animals graze. Suddenly the door swung wide, revealing the deity to her “[ ] my favorite niece how are you love!” The tall woman sing songingly yelled, hugging the wide eyed girl “Hello Auntie Dem, im quite alright! Uhm, what seems to be the problem? One of your hands came to get me” [ ] said as she took in the ranch home her harvesting aunt had, all sorts of gains, wheats, fruits and more spewed about in her living room “Ah yes! Your father told me how great youve become with your potions and mixes of herbs, being the daughter of Dionysus im not surprised! I told him to let you grow and do more now look at you, serving us gods and mortals alike!” Demeter went on, handing her confused niece a large apple as she took one for herself. Becoming her to a table by the window they both sat, eating on their fruit as she explained her issue.
“You see, i have a lot of cattle, different kinds, different kins and legacies, but im a bit stuck. My favorite mare, had a child a little while ago and he seemed to just be your average bull at first….but..as time went on he out grew his father, my prized minotaur bull and even his normal cow and bull family.” Taking a glance to the field they watched as the minotaur children and some sheep danced and played, other average cow cults running to join. Sighing Demeter continued “Hes a hybrid, my prized minotaur as his father and well, my biggest and prized heifer as his mother. He wont come out of the shed, doesnt deal with his other kind, minotaur or not. Hes around your age now, getting to be his prime but..he wont converse in the fields. Both his father and mother voiced concerns to me about his health but when i checked on him, hes fine! Fields away under a sun and away from my younger and ready cows! I dont get it! Maybe because hes more human than he is bull, he does have a human face and even body, just taht everything below is...well bull. Tail, those wonderful breeding-” “Auntie!” Before she could finish [ ] was hushing the woman, waving her arms “I get it i get it Bull bottom human top i dont need to hear about his loins!” She pleaded.
Laughing, the goddess reached to a pile of hay, whistling to feed some of the nearby cows “Ah you silly girl, I was only gloating about my finest bull yet! I even tried bringing him mortals but...he crushed them, saying they were too small. Every single one! Younger older it didnt matter, he wanted nothing to do with them and just squashed them like a bug under his hoofs! I'm at my wits end, Im not sure what he needs, and hes so large i cant just let him walk around the palace place, he intimidates the clerks and huffs when talked to!” Dramatically laying against the table she looked to the thinking girl, her eyes shining with an idea “Hey auntie, how about you take me to him, i can see if hes loss any weight or seems sickly anywhere. Where do you think hed be at this time?” [ ] asked “Ah you brave girl, what time is it, almost high noon? He might be in the field but its the one with my giant tree that he likes” Demeter responded, pointing to a large tree up a few fields with nothing much around it but luhs grass. “Doesnt even matter if i put up a fence, he walks on two legs so he just hops over it” She sighed again as the duo headed outside.
Seeing a tall minotaur coming towards them [ ] stopped along Demeter, her goddess aunt speaking “Ah Milvor, how are you and Altine?” “Lady Demeter and I'm guessing this is [ ], we are fine. The misses is in the field now, seeing if she can see our boy” He said. Realizing that this was the after for her case [ ] spoke up “Uhm sir have you noticed anything amiss with er-” “Kendo, his name is Kendo” The Minatour said “Ah yes with Kendo, anything seem to be hurt or missing from his way of life” She asked. “Well..not particularly. Hes always fought some of the other males here so bruises and marks are a common thing we see from him. Besides a broken horn he doesn't have anything major going on. Just that he refuses to be around anyone here. Even us at times when were out with the others” He said solemnly , looking at the girl. Grabbing her hands he pleaded “Please, help our son? I know he can be rude and dismissive but down there our sweet boy is in there, were worried sick about him” Milvor said, a sad moo coming from his approaching wife “Miss i do appreciate you checking on him, I just hope he'd be home soon” A half cow women spoke , coming beside this Kendo’s father “Well i'll do my best, it doesnt sound like hes too hurt or anything serious so i'll make sure to try and get him to be with you both” Giving a reassuring smile [ ] started off, heading to the tree at the top of them hill. Just before she got far Demeter called to her, handing her sweet wheat “Heres some of his snack, he sometimes will come back if we offer him more” She said. Taking the wheat and putting it in the side of her flowing peplos. Soon with enough treading uphill , she got close to the tree , soon seeing a tail swish from in front of the tree. Hesitantly she walked forward before seeing hooved legs, also covered in black fur, pop out from the tree. Placing a hand at the side that had no person on it she peeked over to in fact , find a rather giant back in the sun, small flecks of freckles on the toned skin. Holding her gift closer she walked to the male before hearing a snort “ ‘M tellin’ ya Elinor I dont want nothin’ to do with ya, go on, go back to the heard” A rough and deep voice said, a larger hand coming up to wave off whoever was behind him. Feeling a bit bad for this mysterious Elinor and offended, she was brushed off [ ] walked closer , standing at the ends of his legs until the male growled. “I told ya to-'' Stopping himself from yelling once he turned around he was surprised to find not hybrid named Elinor but in fact the small [ ] her eyes widening as amber ones looked down “Yer not Elinor” He said as [ ] giggled “And im guessing youre Kendo” She said as the bull sat up, cruising his legs and the curious woman in front of her. “Whos askin?”
He huffed as [ ] looked at him as she did the same , sitting across from the hybrid “A…. doctor of sorts. Your parents, along with Goddess Demeter asked me to come check on you, see how youre doing” she said as he huffed again “ ‘M fine, now why did they send you” He said as he watched her pull things out, paper , a quill, ink and is that..? Pointing to the bustle of wheat he called out “Is that… for me?” Blinking [ ] looked at the almost childish Kendo, smiling as she untied the snack “It is for you, I heard you liked it. Brought it in the hopes youd talk to me?” She questioned, holding a piece out for him to take. Hesitantly he did, gnawing at it as he hummed in delight, his tail swishing. “ So uhm… Doc what do want to know” He asked, watching as the smaller girl touched his chest and arms, squeezing lightly as she wrote down different things “If ya wanted to touch me ya shouldve asked” He teased, taking his own hand to her face. Felling he face warm up she moved back, poking him with a finger “Now now be good im just seing if youre injured. Besides that horn, do you have anything broken or doenst feel well?” She asked as she waved a pisces of wheat, making him focus. “Nah, im as fit as a fiddle” Side eyeing his response she still gave him a piece , hearing him hum in delight as she wrote more notes.
“So no injuries, no pain , nothing?” shaking his head he continued to eat , taking some pieces from her bundle as she reached for the uneatten pieces “Hey! No you get these as a reward for answering me not to eat at your leisure!” She scolded. Reaching as far as she could she grabbed at his hand before he lifted them higher, smirking “Well miss doc i want what i want, and I want my snack” He said before she grabbed his arm, poking a manicured nail at it hand “Well Kendo ill let you have it if you tell me whats wrong, without covering it up deal?” Feeling him flinch at her poking she did it again until he moved away , glaring at her through his bangs that hung low “Fine! Stop poking me though, ya nails hurt! And theres nothing wrong, i just dont like ‘em cows! They stink!” He said as he knelt closer, moving her from his arm. “They stink? How old are you 5? Why do they stink!” [ ] huffed back as he chewed more of his treat, looking to the flustered girl “Im 22 in human years little girl , and like i said they stink! Reeks like open sores and meat” He said as he kept eating , laying in the sun. Thinking over his words it dawned in her what he could be talking about “And what do i smell like Kendo?” [ ] asked, catching the half bull off guard “I dunno, you dont stink, Neither does lady Dem” He said as he turned to her. Leaning over she gave him a piece of wheat again but this time, pushing herself a bit forward, watching as his body shook before he took the piece , eating it. “Well Kendo, my name is [ ] and ill be checking on you moreoften okay? I need to run down to the house but ill be back if that's okay with you?” Silently he shook his head, watching her run off as he opened his still crossed legs, feeling himself unsleeth as he groaned ‘Shit...now why am I gettin turned on’ he thought to himself, rubbing away what he could before the girl came back
As soon as she got to the farm she was met with the eyes of the worrying three, the first to speak being his mother Altine “Oh! [ ] youre back!” She said, the bell on her neck dangling as she ran to the fence “How is my boy? Kendo is he alright?” she asked as Demeter and Milvor came soon after for the report “Well maam i can confirm he is healthy, not is wrong with him the only thing is..” [ ] hesitated as she looked at them “He might have a heat approaching, is this his first one by any chance?” SHe asked as they all looked at eachother, Demeter speaking up “Well not exactly, this is why I kept bringing mortals up here, he wouldnt mate with the cows, and even other hybrids! Nothing! Hed turn his nose up at them all and go back to that field. He actually broke that horn of his fighting a bull from a neighboring farm who wanted to cow that was trying to get his attention” Demeter said, sigh as she saw her nieces blank face , afraid she overwhelmed her “Its alright if you dont think hes fixable [ ] i can-” “No hes fine. I can help him, and i think it wont be that hard either” [ ] said, giving the group a smile. “Watch him for a few days for me , im gonna go back up there with him, see how he is then come back in a few days with some of my things, ill stay here as long as need be to help your son” She said as she gave them all a smile, going inside to get her something to eat. Soon she hear her aunt appear, shuffling about to give her a basket to put her things in “Here, Im so gald helping him is a easy fix” She said sighing happily as she continued “I know he should mate on his own time, but im more concerned for his heath of it all, he doesnt even release into anyone or even by himself” Glancing towards her auntie she took in a breath before saying something “Well, i know it has to be bad now, he even said the er, cow women here stink, so their hormone have to be covered with other bulls or maybe he genuinely doesnt see appeal with them” [ ] said. Thinking it over Demeter gave her an almost alarming look “Well if thats the case just as you arrived he asked me what i was cooking, that something smelt good. I told him I didnt have anything and he just retreated back to his part of the barn before leaving for the field again.” Slowly [ ] realized she might be in for more than she imagines but brushed it off. “Interesting..” She said as she took her full basket “I have an idea, im gonna see if his heat hits its peaking times in a few days, I do plan on staying here if youd have me here?” She asked as a delighted look spread across Demeter’s face “Of course dear child! I missed having you around! Your Father was bad at bringing you over, him and his festivals” Demeter huffed before she poked her nieces cheek “Besides! We can have a girls night, or well er, weeks depending!” She said as the laughed together “Well it's a deal!”
Heading back up the hill she saw that Kendo had moved, facing a running river as he sast in the sun once more, looking content. [ ] smirked to herself before grabbing some of the things she had ; a brush, a lavish soap and a towel. Heading to where the behemoth of a hybrid laid she noticed his ear twitched, before he opened an eye to look back at her. “Hey Doc, ya back.” He said as she gave him a smile, sitting beside his head “Why yes I am. You seem to be enjoying yourself” She teased as he smirked, turning to face her. “Well i do enjoy the sun, keeps me warm nd my hair soft.” Looking him over again she noticed that his hair was always up in a bun but his bangs covering his eyes, a different hue of color, more of a rustic red than his black furred legs. “Well about that...Im gonna give you a bath!” the giant bull flinched at her words, seeing the happy look gracing her face “Oi now look, ‘m fine i dont need no bath” He argued as she pouted “Why sure you do! I know you dont go when the others get theirs, and if that bun of yours is any indication, you need to wash all of that dirt and grime off. Now let me help you” She barked back, pointing the soft looking brush towards his face. He stood up, now overthrowing the girls height as he pointed a finger at her “Now look, I like being this way, it keeps those girls offa me if you clean me now they wont leave me alone!” [ ] sighe before stepping closer, pointing her own small hand at his face, moving closer “Now you listen to me Kendo, I have things to help keep them off of you, this is for your own health! I can leave you here, dirty but your hair and fur is gonna get so matted theyll have to shave you!”
At hearing a potential that hed be shave Kendo flinched, moving his bangs so his soft eyes could meet her determined ones “Theyll shave me? Ion wanna be like the sheep” he said she she gave him a satisfied look. “Well go into the water then and ill make sure you wont!” Reluctantly he sighed, walking into the river as she followed behind, pinning her longer robe so it wouldnt get too wet as she sat at the side of the river. Holding a hand out she waved him closer, the male coming to her as she undid his hair. To her utter surprise it fell down his shoulders, stopping just short of his waist. Gently she pushed his bangs back to see his pretty amberish eyes looking up to her [ ]’ed ones. He had a typical Bull hook through his nose , the gold shining in the warm sun. He was quite handsome, sun kissed skin and a clear face, broad shoulders and a nice body. Even with his mostly human body his horns, tail and ears were bull, on top of his legs and...neithers , that were covered in fur. Softly she traced a scar under his eye, the wound slightly tender as he jumped from the touch. Going to her wrist she tied a string to hold his long bangs up, a giggle falling from her lips as he almost looked like a younger child getting a bath “What're you lookin at me like that for” He huffed as she laughed more, pushing his face together “You look like an upset child is all. Now go ahead and dip in the water for me , ill scrub you after.” Listening to her, Kendo dropped watching as some of the debris and dirt washed off around him as he stood up, shaking his hair “Good enough?” He asked as she shook her head, pouring some of the sopa on the brush as she started to was his chest,making sure to scrub him as clean as she could from land. Sensing her struggle he reached to her, lifting her over his body as she squealed “Sorry, you were just strugglin so i thought i'd help you” Kendo said as [ ] hesitantly started to wash as much as she could, tapping his arm anytime she needed to move. Being up there did help, she was able to was his horns and his hair, revealing the rust orange and copper hair underneath. Surprised she ran her finger though it, giving him a shy smile. “See dont you feel a bit better?” She asked as he shyly nodded, noticing how her clothes clinged to her chest. He reached to put her back on land, coming out of the water himself as he allowed her to scrb his legs and hoofs, the dull black fur coming to life as he watched in awe. She didnt mind helping him, still came to bother him when he said he didnt want help and now she was bathing him. Kendo mulled over how helpful she was, and realized she was more comforting than most. After scrubbing his hoofs shiny she tapped his legs, signaling she was done.
“All right! Now that youre all clean and such Ill make sure you stay this way okay Kendo?” [ ] said as she went back to the basket, pulling out two apples. The bull in question watched as she came back to him, handing him the other one “Here ya go! Thought you could use something sweet” kendo took the apple from the girl, before biting into it, thanking hier softly as they sat in silence. Soon [ ] spoke up, breaking their silet aurora “So...ill be around here the next few days or so, ill probably stay longer, giving how nice it is” She laughed, looking at the curious male beside her “Dont be afraid to ask me for anything okay? Im here to help you” With that Kendo nodded, going back to the apple. Quietly Kendo touched her arm, making [ ] look to him as an unfamiliar look went over his face. Gently herself, [ ] put her hand on his, shaking her head as a signal for him to talk. “Would you mind...pettin me?” he asked before [ ]’s eyes went wide. Now feeling a bit more embarrassed he spoke up again “I have problems going to sleep, ‘ts why i like it out here in the sun, its warm , nd comforting…” Pausing he continued after he got his words together. “You do the same thing like the sun. Youre warm...comforting.. And make me feel sleepy...so if you pet me...ill be comforted to sleep..its what my mama did, but im too big to be in her lap” With that kendo finished, glancing to the girl who gave him a soft look “Of course i can! I have to get pick some more clothes up but once i get back, I can stay with you out here.” Shaking his head Kendo looked back to the river “Ya dont have to sleep outside with me just...put me to sleep” Unable to stop herself [ ] hugged his arm, looking at him through her lashes “Oh cmon you big baby, I dont mind it! Havent slept under the stars since i was a kid!” Brushing off her dress she ran a hand though his thick locs of hair, giving him another warm hug “Ill be back before sundown, now you be good” And with that he watched as his new found friend walked down the hill.
As promised she brought a blanket and joined him, laying under the tree as the large male went to sleep on her lap, contently humming as [ ] ran her fingers through his hair, making Kendo groan as he fell asleep like mentioned, hugging her thighs as he slept the most comfortable he had in weeks. Watching the hybrid sleep she saw all types of scars, some down his back , others on his chest. A few on his arms and only one on his face, plus the broken horn. He obviously got himself into different groups of problems, but he was sweet, not as curt as he expected. Running her fingers down his back she watched him shiver, going to wrap his arms higher around her torso. Giggling as softly as she could [ ] started to braid his hair back in his sleep, the moving under her ceasing as he was well resting once more. Thinking to herself ‘ If he’ll be like this it should be a breeze to help him.’ Oh how wrong she was.
A few days passed with little to no incident , [ ] going around helping with the daily chore and hanging out with her deity auntie. As the two of them sat in the living quarters, drinking a mixed juice that her father set them they heard a bell appear towards the window, it being Kendo’s mother “I'm so sorry to bother you , but i think something is gravely wrong. Kendo is whining in the shed, earlier he even started to-” Before she could finish a thumb came from his shed, followed by a groan “and that, he's been head butting his room” sitting up [ ] looked to his shed, seeing the door shut but large banging still coming from inside “Hey Auntie, is it alright if we could move him to the other field? I dont want his lashing to accidentally hurt anyone here” Coming besides [ ] Demeter chewed at her lip, thinking “Well, if we can stop him then yes, I'd get the boys to move it quickly”. With that answer [ ] got up, heading to the rocking shed. Taking in a breath she knocked, hearing that the groans subsided. The door slowly creaked open, showing a heaving Kendo “[ ].....?” He whispered, looking over her body as she reached to his forehead, pressing her hand against it. Hot, way too hot. “Kendo, sweetie come with me okay? We’re gonna go to the fields and we're gonna move your shed there okay?” Silently he nodded, coming out of his place. He was gasping, chest heaving as his eyes swirled a darker color than normal. Taking the outstretched hand of [ ] his larger fingers curled against it, following the light pull of the girl. Softly, He nudged her back “ ‘M hot..” he said as she looked back at him, making sure the fever wasn't wearing him down. He gave her a weak smile, rubbing the back of her hand “ ‘M alright princess, just hot” Kendo said as she noted how his voice dropped octaves. “Well theyre gonna bring a bigger shed for you out here and ill check on you every hour. Does anything hurt?” [ ] asked as they walked up the hill “Nah, but my horns are ackey.” “Is that why you were bashing them on the shed?” “Yeah...its like trying to scratch an itch you can reach” Kendo sighed, seeing his usual tree coming into view. As the duo got there he dramatically fell under it, pulling [ ] with him. “K-kendo! Careful!” she fussed as he let go of her apologizing as he drifted to sleep. Soon some of the workers had started working on the new roomed shed for him , finishing just before sundown as they would inform Demeter of where she was.
Gently pushing the deep sleeping boy from her lap she went to his new place, checking everything out. It was more of a small home than a shed, filled with a huge bed and a nice aesthetic to them, the touch of the goddess laced through the look of the place. Going around to sort some of the things they brought for Kendo, [ ] felt a presence behind her “whats all this..” the groggy bull said, ducking down to walk into his lavish bedroom “Your new home! I had them build something spacious but also not overwhelming, and these white are just so lovely.” [ ] kept talking as she soon felt two large arms wrap around her torso “ Ya did this for little ol me..?” He whispered as she ran a hand over his forearm. “I did...you need somewhere to relax in this state” She responded, trying to get from his grasp as he tighten it “Uh uh dont leave...tell me whats wrong with me doc..why cant I stop feeling hot...and anytime you come around I...cant help myself” He ended with a groan , burying his face in the shorter girls neck “Well once im sure of you being in a state of need ill be back okay? Just...relax for me and i promise ill be back.” finally convincing him to let go of her waist, not without a pained groan as he went to the bed, hazy eyes glancing over the short dress wearing girl “Get some more rest okay? Im gonna get something to eat and ill be back in the morning. Call me if you need me okay?” [ ] said as he just groaned a meek response, turning to his side.
Earlier the next morning [ ] woke up to an empty house. Stretching she found a neatly written note with some food on the table
Dearest Niece, Im currently headed to your Uncle Poseidon's place, I should be back some time later ; an update on Kendo, hes been begging for you all day, wont let anyone touch him or check on him. He should be awake now but do be warned ; He’s a lot more scatterbrained than usual
Auntie Demeter
Reading over the note again [ ] sighed, putting on her more comfortable and workable dress as she headed up to his new little house on his hill, the sound of groaning and whines coming to her ears as she got to his door. Seeing it ajar she pushed it open slightly, the place dark except from a crack of light coming from the window. Going to the shades she opened them, hearing a hiss from the bed. “Kendo its me..[ ]?” She called out as the wild set of hair came into view. He was even more disheveled, eyes filled over as he looke to the girl before growling, crawling out of the bed to her. With a gasp she was in his arms, body shaking as she was met with unnaturally feral eyes from the boy. “You left me yesterday..” he rapeseed out, burying his face in her neck again as she grabbed at his thick neck “Kendo honey, i told you id be back this morning didnt i?” She calmly said as he held her tighter, pushing her chest to his “Dont care, ‘ts too long” Realizing why he was so needy [ ] tried to reason with him “Well im sorry love, here lets sit down on the bed” Trying to get him to move she walked forward only to feel something large and hot push into her bare thigh. Nervously she looked down only to be faced to what she feared it was ; His hanging member. A wicked laugh came from above her as she was met with his ever lust driven eyes, a hand of his going to cup her ass and pull her closer “See what you left me with? No matter how hard i fuck my fist i cant cum, it wont come out” He whined and burried his face again, rocking himself on her thigh “Please ill do anythin..youre the only one who sgotten me like this...the only one i want..[ ] please princess help me” Overwhelmed but the situation she tried to pull back, eyes searching his “K-kendo youre getting yourself worked up relax-” Without warning he picked her up, making her screech as he brought her crouch to his face, inhaling as he whimpered, reaching down to his growing dick “Fuck you smell good, like flowers...and sweets..” Letting his tongue roll out he sucked over her panties, making her squeal as she gripped his messy hair “N-no kendo put me down i need to help y-you!” She moaned as his tongue flicked over her clit, a mutual groan coming from both of them. Soon a hard tug to his hair resonated, cause him to put her down as she barely touched the floor, hand grabbing his biceps “Kendo please, please sit down youre overworking yourself.” Trying to calm her racing heart she saw how hazed he was, his hand coming to wrap around his visually throbbing head, stroking himself as tight and fast as he could, looking at the awe struck girl infront of him. His hips lifted up as he was chasing a high but he soon groaned, thrusting meekly in his fist “I-I cant, fuck I cant do it doll, ‘t hurts...p-please” Finally snapping from her haze she got closer to Kendo, hand still trying to milk himself as she put her hand over his, stoping the motion.
“K-ken..ill help you okay? Youre gonna rub yourself raw at this pace..” nervously [ ] pulled his hand away, precum coating it as she gulped. He was huge, red and swollen tip curved in the right places. Even with his bull heritage he was still humanly manageable, but with a lot of work to try and get it to fit. With her staring at the intimidating size it twitched , curving up to his belly button as he gave her a lop sided snarl “ Cmon darlin, he... er, we need you . ya keep staring make me feel a bit exposed” He laughed as [ ] gave her own light chuckle. Facing her fears she wrapped a hand around his tip, a hurting yelp falling from Kendo at the touch made her eyes flicker to him but what she saw was pure lust, eyes blown with his tongue licking over his lips “Y-yes finally...shit I-i can feel somethin” Kendo couldnt help himself. Reaching down he grabbed her other hand , wrapping them tightly around his tip as he thrusted between them. “Mhmm im cumin, im gonna cum o-oh shit” As soon as she twisted her wrist to help him he felt himself twitch , spurts of warm cum splattering on [ ]’s face and the floor a he gave her a nervous laugh “S-shit doll face yer good...im sorry i couldnt hold it in..” he said shyly as [ ] gave him a sympathetic look, stroking over his still throbbing head. “[ ] please...can I fuck you? I-I promise ill go slow its juts the smell of you is..mhmm intoxicating” Kendo pulled her up from her knees, pressing his mouth against her clinging panties ,pulling them with his teeth. [ ] squeaked, grabbing his hair as he pushed her hips closer, trying to lick her. “W-wait ill take em off” Pushing at his shoulders she pulled the piece he had in his mouth out, sliding the flimsy lace as she came a bit closer, a growl coming from his lips as he pushed her dress higher, finally able to taste her. Throwing one leg then the next on his shoulder kendo fell back, making her fall onto his lips.
[ ] let a pitched moan come out, startled by his rummaging in between her thighs , his diligent uskcing on her clit taking a toll as she came, bucking her hips onto his mouth. Swallowing her juices Kendo flipped her on her stomach, pushing the fabric of her dress up and over her shoulder to release her covered chest, now exposed “mhmm i want more of that sweet nectar baby why dont you give it to me?” whispering in her ear and now bucking his even harder dikc between her small lips [ ] started to panic “K-Ken wait I dont think youll fit!” ignoring her thrashing Kendo looked over her body, seeing how she shook at every stroke of his tip against her sopping core “I told ya ill be gentle, hold still [ ]...i wouldnt hurt my mate” The heaviness of those word took over [ ]’s body as she looked back to him, only to see the save behemoth size push against her ring of muscles. Agonizingly slow he pushed, letting his tip slide in as he pushed each small inch he could in, a whine falling from them both. Once he was halfway in he slowly thrust his hips, causing the girl to yelp “I-its alright i got ya okay? Youre fine...its okay im here” Constantly praising her , Kendo was able to slip more into her, each mini thrust pushing him a bit closer to her, the sounds of squishing and pleasure filled moans filling the room. Becoming overwhelmed at almost being full [ ] pushed her hips back to take the rest, making Kendo yelped and [ ] moaned, the sudden feeling of him bottoming out almost too much as he placed his hand on her stomach, feeling him brush her cervix. Swinging his hips more fluidly he started to pounder her even more, gripping her neck as he pushed her deeper in the bed “Fuck yeah i knew youd be my perfect little minx, taking me so well i cant wait to see you swollen with my babies” He huskily whispered , the stretched out girl too blissed at taking him whole to care about his words.
“I bet youd love being my mate, wouldnt have to lift a finger for anything , id take good care of ya..” Continuing his beating against her cervix he felt something strong hed never felt before, a blind need to cum hitting him like a train “mhm..please let me breed you, this pussys’ mine, all i ever wanted...ill make you a cute little house wife hm? Make you swell with cute little us running about.” Feeling her weakening clench over him he reached for that bundle of nerves, switching his hips to hit even deeper, his throbbing dick pushing against that sponge in her walls. Crying out [ ] fell lower, feeling him slip impossibly deeper as he sped up.” Cmon [ ] , babygirl cum for me..give me it..t-then i can give you what you want yeah? Fill ya to the brim so you can bear me a strong child….”Finally at that the little sense of control snapped coming from a particularly hard push and roll of her clit she was whining , grabbing the arm beside her head as angry red lines welted up. Feeling her hit her peak Kendo got to his knees , nursing her bud as she tried to tug him away, thighs shaking as teary eyes looked down to his fierce lust filled one. As soon as she started whimpering and pulling her hips away he stopped, scrubbing his tip along her folds as he entered without too much pull, [ ]’s mouth falling open “Mh..i'm so close baby...just wanted to look at you when I fill you full..” Kendo felt his tip twitch, making his hips stutter as he picked his pace up again, watching as her arms went are far as they could to his back, stretching his shoulders as he came with a growl, and almost audible sound of him pumping in her heard as she weakly pulled him closer, their lips meeting in a intimate kiss.
With care he pulled from her lips, seeing her eyes fill up again as he kissed tears away “Its alright...its okay ‘m here princess...its alright..I didnt hurt you did I?” Kendo asked as he looke at her slightly bulged stomach, a satisfied smirk on his lips “ Hey [ ]...” He started as she gave a weak hum he continued “Be my mate..I know i didnt ask before filling you bu...id be honored to make such a caring woman my mate and wife...treat you just like my father does my mom..…” He said, nuzzling her cheek before [ ] pulled his face up, kissing him lightly as she gave him a tired smile, rubbing his cheeks “I-id be honored to be your mate..take good care of me okay? Or Auntie Demeter has your head..” Laughing he kissed her lips again, sealing their new deal

7x18: Party On, Garth
Then:
Tumblr media
Party on, Garth, indeed
Now:
A group of teens enjoy a camp-out and scary story hour. One dude tells the story of Jenny Greentree, and how she froze to death right under the tree by their campsite. A noise startles them, but it’s revealed to be another friend (wearing Sam Winchester’s striped hoodie?!). Trevor is toasted, but unlike the others, hears or senses some unknown threat, and takes off running.
His brother and the other campers take off after him, eventually finding him gutted on the side of the road.
Tumblr media
Officer Garth Fitzgerald IV is on the case. He interviews a couple of the campers and they tell him about Jenny Greentree. So, he heads to the cemetery and “Garths” her.
Tumblr media
Trevor’s brother, Ray, gets very drunk alone and heads into the forest with a gun (a winning combo.) He sees a figure in the distance, but before he can reach her, he’s trussed up in a tree and gutted. Way to keep the family tradition alive (er, dead?). Garth hears about it over the radio, and is very upset.
Meanwhile, DEAN HAS CAS BACK (kinda --he’s a little catatonic after taking on Sam’s crazy), and gets a non-update from Meg. He also gets a call from Garth, not that he remembers who that is. He owes Garth though so they head to help with the case. Instead of Garth, they meet Corporal James Brown.
Tumblr media
Discussing the case with Garth, Dean comes to the conclusion that they’re dealing with an invisible ghost werewolf.
Sam learns the father of the dead brothers owns a brewery in town (and OH the irony of Dean Winchester saying microbrews are for douchebags.) Sam and Garth interview him, asking if his sons had enemies. Dean interviews Ray and Trevor’s sister, Maria. She tells him about another business partner, Dale, who died. Sam and Garth then interview Randy, the third business partner. He tells them the death was a suicide, and they’re selling their beer to a major distributor.
Meanwhile, the grieving drunk mom mixes herself a little AM joy. She plops her drink and her daughter’s OJ on the table together. Guess which one the daughter goes for? I mean, not her fault.
Tumblr media
She’s instantly drunk, and sees a shadowy figure in the home. She looks for it. Her dad’s like, WTF?
Tumblr media
She sees the creepy woman standing right next to her mom, but can only point and scream before her mom is gutted in the kitchen.
Dean’s had enough of learning about microbrews (and drinking from his own flask that mysteriously sets off Garth’s EMF reader), and pops open some bottles to try.
Tumblr media
Dean learns that he likes the beer, we learn that Garth can get drunk off of one beer, and Sam learns that Dale left the company before he died. They’ve got a possible vengeful spirit on their hands. News of the most recent family tragedy comes across the police scanner.
Garth and Dean head to the house, and Garth talks to the young daughter, Tess. Or should we say, Mr. Fizzles talks with Tess.
Tumblr media
The sock gets Tess to tell them it was a monster with claws --and she drank a grown-up drink.
Tumblr media
Sam interviews the widow of the business partner. She reveals that they both despise the other family for their past business dealings, but that her husband had sent them a peace offering. The bottle of saki he gave them arrived in a box “with writing all over it” (likely warded) and he wouldn’t let his wife even touch it. Sam’s spidey sense tingles.
Dean and Garth piece together the other pertinent facts of the case: you’ve gotta be drunk to see the monster. Dean immediately pulls out his flask and starts drinking. Garth inquires about the flask, learns it’s Bobby’s, and speculates that it could possibly be haunted. Dean SQUASHES the feelings down. He’s here to work!
They all head to the brewery to hunt their ghost and find the potentially cursed bottle of saki - it’s been opened. They find a surveillance camera, but see nothing on the footage from when the elaborate packaging was opened. Dean thinks they need to drink to see the ghost on the security footage. “Can you even get drunk anymore?” Sam inquires, and we feel sad for Dean Winchester.
Tumblr media
They re-watch the footage, only to see the ghost appear this time. “He let that thing out of the box, and it must have just followed him to the place with all the thingies,” Sam summarizes intelligently. Randy arrives at the brewery, calls them hucksters, and starts to call the cops, but Garth tasers him.
Later, in a restaurant’s back alley, Sam and Dean get a chef to read the box that held the saki. “What you took will be taken from you,” the box warns. The cook gets spooked, because the box declares that the bottle inside contains a shojo, an alcohol spirit.
Back at the motel, they research shojos. (Randy, the brewery owner, has been kidnapped and stashed in the hot tub.)
Tumblr media
There is a way to kill shojos...by using a samurai sword with a shinto blessing. Dean announces that he’s going to search local pawn shops for samurai swords. Lol, show, whatever. Garth pulls out his EMF and holds it near Bobby’s flask. Sam reports that he doesn’t think they’re being haunted by Bobby because he pulled out a talking board when the beer disappeared in a prior episode. Since Bobby’s spirit didn’t chat, Sam dismissed that theory. Their conversation gets interrupted by Randy waking up in Garth’s hot tub.
Garth interrogates him. He wants to know who his kid is...because he’s in danger. It turns out that Randy had a secret kid - who’s currently working the graveyard shift at the brewery. Garth heads out, pockets loaded with the contents of the motel’s mini bar.
At the brewery, the would-be victim cleans windows while blissfully unaware of the dangers.
Tumblr media
Dean gets the chef from earlier to read the shinto blessing on the sword he found.
Tumblr media
The blessing done, the chef heads back to work on what has got to be his weirdest night ever on the job. Dean gets an update from Garth on the ghost’s next victim, and learns that he’s at the brewery.
At the brewery, Garth spots the ghost lurking next to Randy’s son, and hauls him outta there. Garth tries to explain that he’s in danger, but fails. However, the ghost turns up and makes his argument for him. It turns out that getting thrown through a glass window by an invisible force is an effective argument about the existence of unexplainable, superstrong forces. The guy tries to make a run for it, but he’s chased by the terrifying invisible ghost. Sam bursts in and tries to defend against the shojo, but he gets knocked out almost immediately. SAMMY, your head bby!
Dean bursts in with the sword. He is NOT drunk enough, so at first he swings wildly and the sword goes flying. Things turn around quickly for Dean, though, because the sword slides right on back to his hand! Sam wakes up and directs him in the fight, and soon the shojo is speared by the sword. She disappears in an angry flash of light. Dean looks around afterward. He’s alone - or IS HE?
Tumblr media
Garth wakes up in a pile of rubble. “What’d I miss?” OH GARTH.
Dean asks Bobby to send him some kind of sign that he’s still around, while Sam lurks secretly in the background - silent witness to his brother’s CONSTANT WELL OF PAIN. There’s no sign from Bobby.
At the motel, Garth bids them farewell. Dean gets his HUG.
For Too Precious For This World Science:
Tumblr media
Garth drives away in a swirl of heart emojis, leaving Sam and Dean to talk FEELINGS. Sam tells Dean that he saw him trying to talk to Bobby in the brewery. Dean feeds Sam an eight layer bean dip of denial coated hope. He’s NOT SAD, he’s FINE - and there’s a whole string of incidents which makes it appear like Bobby’s been helping them along. Sam thinks that Dean’s just grieving - and his grief makes Bobby appear to still be around. Bobby is DEAD. D E A D.
As they leave the room, the camera pans over to...Bobby!
Tumblr media
Before they drive away, Dean realizes that he left the flask behind in the motel room. He bursts through the door. “There you are,” he says softly, looking towards Bobby, who starts to smile. But Dean walks right past Bobby and grabs the flask, completely unaware of his presence.
Garth Quotesgerald IV:
You’ve been Garthed
I usually don’t even drink beer. It messes with my depth perception. Especially when I skinny dip
Mr. Fizzles is gonna go where the sun don’t shine
Come with me if you want to live!

The Fall (Tobin Heath x Reader)
Tumblr media
Anonymous Request: Would you do a one shot with Tobin/reader, where the reader is an er doctor, like a big tattooed badass doctor, who is working a double night shift and Tobin is at home eight months pregnant with Ashlyn or someone and when they aren’t looking Tobin does something that causes her to fall. Then a doctor friend of the reader tells her that Tobin is there on her last thirty minutes of her shift. When the reader sees her figures out what happens she gets mad at whoever was with Tobin for allowing it.
“I’ll see you guys later.” You smile as you head behind the counter to grab your things, all too ready to be home after an INCREDIBLY rough double shift, but what you hear next stops you in your tracks.
“We’ve got an 8-month pregnant woman coming in, took a fall.”
The second you hear that you stiffen, a number of your colleagues turning your way, eyes widen.
You shake your head.
“Please, don’t be-
Just as the words leave your mouth your phone starts to ring, your eyes widening in horror as you jerk it from your pocket, your wife, Tobin’s, name across the screen, along with a picture of you and her, the two of you smiling brightly.
You answer the phone quickly, your heart racing.
“Tobin are you-
“Y/N, it’s Ashlyn, I’m so sorry, Tobin just fell and I don’t-
Your hands ball into fists, your eyes narrowing as your nostrils flare.
“Where is she?” You growl, Ashlyn visibly shrinking away from the phone, your anger radiating through the phone.
Ashlyn, gathering her courage, brings the phone back to her ear.
“We’re on our way there, she’s got a gash on her head and-
“YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO WATCH HER!” You scream in the phone, one of your colleagues swiping the phone from your hold, your hands trembling violently.
The conversation is hushed, meanwhile a couple of your nurses try to calm you down.
You knew Tobin’s fall was an accident, but you were still seething you’d trusted Ashlyn to watch her, and under her watch, Tobin had been injured.
“Goddamn it.” You growl under your breath, the woman who’d swiped your phone passing it back to you.
“They’re coming in right no-
You don’t even let her finish, instead sprinting through the hospital towards the ER’s entrance, screeching to a halt when you see Tobin being stretchered in, a noticeable knot on her head.
Ashlyn runs in, right behind the gurney, the woman swallowing hard when she sees the look in your eyes.
You point a finger at her.
“After she’s checked out, you and I are having a talk.” You snarl, the woman nodding.
Ashlyn wasn’t small, goalies typically weren’t, but you were bigger, tattoo’s much like Ashlyn’s covering your arms, and by the look in your eyes, you were angry, angrier than Ashlyn had ever seen.
She stops watching as you follow Tobin’s gurney to the back, giving the goalie time to call in some back up.
Meanwhile, all thoughts off Ashlyn go out the window, instead, your eyes zeroed in on the bump on Tobin’s head.
“Y/N...” She whispers, reaching out for you and you take her hand, giving it a squeeze.
“Are you okay? Where does it hurt? Is it only your head?” You ramble, Tobin smiling softly.
“I just slipped and hit my head on the coffee table.” She whispers, your nostrils flaring in anger.
“I’m gonna kill her.” You snarl, Tobin’s eyes widening.
“It wasn’t her fault...” She frowns and you shake your head.
“She was supposed to watch you, to keep you safe.” You growl, Tobin giving your hand a squeeze.
“She did, it was just an accident.”
You stick to Tobin’s side like glue, scanning her results, even though she had an emergency room doctor that WASN’T you.
“Y/N? What are you doing he-
The doctor stops midsentence when she sees who’s on the gurney, immediately springing into action.
She walks passed you, placing a hand on your forearm.
“We’ll take care of her, I promise.”
You nod, knowing full well that Tobin was in good hands, and you would be by her side through the whole thing, making sure she was treated properly.
You knew she would be, but you’d still keep a watchful eye on her, she was pregnant with your son after all and that meant that she was going to get the UTMOST care.
You’d make sure of that.
                                                            ***
Meanwhile, Ashlyn was pacing the waiting room, waiting for not only Christen, Ali, and Megan, but Becky and Kelley as well considering they were ALL in town together.
The second Christen steps into the lobby, followed by the others, Ashlyn sprints to her.
“Y/N IS GOING TO KILL ME! YOU SHOULD’VE SEEN THE LOOK ON HER FACE.” Ashlyn whisper yells as she jumps behind Ali, the woman ducking down so if you come into the lobby, you can’t see her.
Unfortunately for her, you almost immediately make your way into the lobby, eyes zeroing in on her.
You advance on the group, Christen wrapping her arms around you when you reach them.
“Is she okay?” She whispers and you nod.
“Just a bump, but she’s fine and so is he...” You run your hands down your face, before turning to Ashlyn, who shrinks under your gaze.
You cross your arms across your chest.
“You were supposed to keep an eye on her.” You growl angrily, everyone wincing as they turn to Ashlyn.
“I turned away for a second and she-
You growl, the goalie’s mouth snapping shut.
“I trusted you to take care of my wife, my PREGNANT wife, and you didn’t.” You bite, Ashlyn’s head hanging in shame.
“I’m so sorry.” She frowns, your heart squeezing at the sight of the woman’s face.
“I know you are, I just, she’s my wife Ash, and he’s my son...” You shrug. “I have to protect them at all costs.”
“I know.” Ashlyn frowns and you sigh, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.
“I know you didn’t mean for it to happen...” You say, Ashlyn picking her head up, a frowning pulling the corners of her mouth downward.
You sigh, pulling the woman into a hug, the goalie wrapping her arms tightly around you.
“I am really sorry.” She whispers in your ear and you nod.
“I know, it’s okay.” You give her a squeeze, pulling away from the hug before throwing your thumb over your shoulder.
“I came out to get you guys, she wants to see you.”
                                                            ***
You lead the group to Tobin’s hospital room, ducking down to kiss Tobin’s forehead when you reach her beside.
Noticing the look of guilt on Ashlyn’s face, Tobin holds a hand out to her, the goalie immediately taking it.
“This wasn’t your fault, I just slipped.” She shrugs, nothing the slight twitch at the corner of your mouth.
Her eyes narrow, darting from you, to Ashlyn, and back.
“What did you do?” She asks and you scoff, your cheeks flushing slightly.
“I-I didn’t do anything...” You mumble.
“Except tear Ashlyn a literal new asshole...” Kelley mumbles and you send her a glare, snarling at the defender who hides behind Becky.
“She’s isn’t wro-
Megan stops mid-sentence to jump behind Becky as well when you send her a glare.
Tobin’s eyes widen as you, reluctantly turn her way, cringing at the look on her face.
“Y/N...” She crosses her arms across her chest and you wince.
“She was-
“Y/N... It wasn’t her fault.” Tobin says, more sternly and you huff, turning to Ashlyn.
“I know, and I’m sorry...” You shrug, shuffling from foot to foot, nervously.
“It’s just...”
Tobin is about to cut you off, but the look on your face tells her to let you finish.
“I heard the call and I just, I panicked...” You frown, remembering the utter panic you’d felt, the many scenarios that had played through you head as to what Tobin’s fall entailed.
Tobin reaches for, and takes your hand, giving it a squeeze.
“I’m sorry I scared you, still it wasn’t Ashlyn’s fault, I kind of waited for her to look away before I got up...” She confesses and your eyes narrow, your wife biting back a smile.
“Seriously?” You grumble, the woman shrugging.
“I just wanted Oreos.”
A snort pulls your attention from Tobin and to her teammates, your eyes narrowing when you send Megan a glare.
“Hey, only your wife would nearly kill herself trying to get Oreos.” Kelley snickers and you roll your eyes, turning to look at Tobin.
“Please. PLEASE, don’t try to do anything on your own again, there’s no telling what could happen.”
You turn away, and head towards Ashlyn, wrapping your arms around her.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know SOMEONE purposely waited until you turned away to get up.” You send Tobin a glare, the woman sticking her tongue out at you.
Christen sits on the edge of the bed, shaking her head.
“Am I going to have to move in with you guys?” She asks and your ears perk up, a grin stretching across your face, a grin that makes Tobin’s eyes double in size.
“No Y/N...” She pouts and you chuckle.
“When can you move in?” You ask Christen, the forward turning to Tobin with a smirk.
“Nooooo, I’ll be fine just by my-
Tobin falls silent when she realizes everyone is staring her way, incredulously.
“Do we need to remind you of the Oreo incident that LITERALLY happened less than 2 hours ago?” Becky asks, a brow arched.
She sighs.
“Fine... Fine...”
You roll your eyes, shaking your head as you watch your wife pout childishly, a pout that’s wiped off her face when you lean down, kissing the top of her head as your hand rests on her protruding tummy.
“I just want you both safe... At least until our little guy is born.” You rub her belly, grinning when the aforementioned baby kicks the palm of your hand.
Tobin smiles, resting her IV’d hand on top of yours.
“I know...” She whispers, cupping your cheek with her free hand and pulling you into a kiss.
“I love you.” You whisper, Tobin smiling as she kisses your lips again.
“I love you too.”
You pull away, turning back to Ashlyn.
“I think I owe you dinner.” You smile, Megan placing a hand on her chest over her heart.
“Ali and Tobin are RIGHT THERE, Y/N.” She gasps and your eyes narrow, the purpled haired woman’s eyes narrowing before she sprints out of the room with you hot on her heels.
Kelley follows behind, eager to see what happens while Becky chases after you, in an attempt to stop the violence.
Ali and Christen giggle as Ashlyn makes her way towards the bed.
“I’m glad.” She grins and Tobin’s eyes narrow.
“Glad that you have someone like Y/N keeping you safe.” She smiles flopping into an empty seat.
Tobin smiles, she be lying if she said your protectiveness didn’t make her swoon, the dominant side that would come out when she was put in harm's way was something that Tobin liked the most about you.
A few months later she’d see that protectiveness double, when it came to a certain baby boy with a familiar pair of brown eyes, brown eyes that looked just like Tobin Heath’s.

Word count: 2.6k
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Everything slowly begins to settle back into focus as Bridgett’s eyes flutter open. At first she didn’t know where she was or what had happened, she just knew her body was sore. Bridgett shifts in her seat, rolling her head slowly to look around the car. Instantly her head begins pounding, the whole car still feeling like it was spinning but she knew they had stopped. She grunts as she unbuckles her seatbelt, feeling the belt slide across her sore body. She feels something wet under her nose as she pushes the hair out of her face, she brings her hand under her nostrils feeling the thick substance with her fingers and looking to see blood covering her three middle fingers.
“Are you alright?” Luke’s voice comes from the side of her. She sees the window was broken, Luke standing outside.
“My head.” She mutters.
“Okay, let’s get you out.” Luke opens the door, taking Bridgett’s hands and guiding her out of the car.
She grips onto his arms, feeling unsteady on her feet as she stands for the first time. “My head is pounding and I feel dizzy.”
“You probably have a concussion. It looks like you hit your head on the window, you have a nasty cut on the side of your head.”
“Luke?” JJ calls out from the car.
“Stay here.” He says, running over to assist JJ.
Bridgett turns to find the car, wanting to hold herself up against it, and when she turns, she sees Stephen’s body in the seat next to hers, his eyes were closed, and his face was covered in blood. Bridgett watched for any signs of breathing from his chest, but after staring at him for almost a minute, she saw nothing.
“Oh my god.” She whispers, covering her mouth with her hand as she begins to cry.
He has a wife. Two kids. How are we going to tell Monica?
From across the car she sees Penelope and Matt rushing over to JJ and Luke, checking in on JJ who was saying she couldn’t see.
“Stephen?” Penelope's voice calls out.
Bridgett looks up at her friend, tears still in her eyes as she makes her way over to them.
“Stephen?” She repeats, looking at him through the window.
Bridgett takes Penelope’s hand, holding it in hers as they look at their team member. “He’s gone.” Bridgett sobs.
Both of the women remain quiet as they stay put, not wanting to leave him by himself.
“Oh my god, I didn’t even ask, are you okay?” Penelope asks.
Bridgett turns her head a little too quickly, her vision going blurry. She grips onto Penelope’s hand, feeling a wave of nausea and disorientation come over her.
“What’s wrong?” Penelope asks.
“I feel like I’m going to be sick.” Bridgett says, closing her eyes and breathing in deep.
“Okay, the medics just got here. Keep doing what you’re doing.”
Bridgett squats down, breathing in deeply, trying to keep herself from throwing up.
“Bridge, the baby. Is the baby okay? Do you feel okay?” Penelope asks.
The baby…
Bridgett hadn’t even thought about the baby.
Bridgett looks up and Penelope, worry written on her face. “I don’t know.”
“Okay don’t panic, let me get a medic over here.” Penelope says, running off.
“Where’s Emily? Has anyone seen her?” Rossi calls out, limping around the road.
Bridgett looks around at everyone who had vacated the cars, maybe they had simply overlooked her, but everyone else was accounted for. She tries to stand back up, but she falls into the car, still feeling dizzy.
“Woah, sit back down for a minute. We need to check you out.” The medic says, helping Bridgett back onto the ground.
“Do you know where Emily is? She was in the other car.” Bridgett asks the woman.
“The police are trying to find her. I need you to focus on me and what I’m doing, okay?”
***
A nurse wheels the gurney Bridgett is laying in through the ER, right behind Rossi.
“Can you do me a favor?” Bridgett asks the nurse behind her. “The man over there in the tie, he’s my boyfriend, can you keep him out of the room? I’m pregnant and he doesn’t know, and I don’t want him to know yet.”
“Yes ma’am.” The nurse replies.
Spencer spots Bridgett right away,  rushing over to her. “Are you okay?” He asks, holding her hand.
“I’m fine.”
He begins to follow them into the room, but the nurse stops him at the door.
“I’m sorry, but we have to run some tests on her, we can’t have you in the room just yet.”
“But she’s- I’m her boyfriend. I just want to make sure she’s okay.”
“I understand, but we need to run tests on her. We will let you see her when we’re done.”
“Spence, I’m fine. Go check on the rest of the team.” Bridgett says, running her thumb over his knuckles.
“I’ll come back to check on you.” He says, leaning down to kiss the uninjured part of her head. “Love you.”
“Love you too.” Bridgett replies as he walks out of the room.
“What we’re going to do is get an ultrasound done and check on the baby, okay? Make sure there’s no damage to the uterus or placenta. We’re more than likely going to keep you until tomorrow evening to make sure baby and you are okay.”
Bridgett nods her head, getting comfortable on the bed.
***
Hours had passed by, all Bridgett wanted to do was go to bed, but with her concussion, she couldn’t. Thankfully all the tests and ultrasound had come back with a good outcome, the baby was okay and everything was normal. She got blips of information from Penelope about what was going with finding Emily, and that Spencer was having a rough time mentally.
“Just checking in on you, sweetheart.” Her nurse walks in, checking the machines behind her.
“I’m just tired.” Bridgett responds.
“I know, we’ll get you up and walking around here in a bit. Your friends have been asking about you, are they okay to come see you?”
“Oh, yeah. Sorry, I just wanted to make sure the baby was okay before anyone came in.”
“Can I ask a personal question, why are you keeping it a secret?”
“Well, I’m an FBI agent, I can’t work in the field if I’m pregnant and I’m not 100% ready to give that up yet, but after tonight I think I am.”
“And you’re keeping it from your boyfriend? He’s a cutie by the way.”
Bridgett laughs, “Thank you. And I just want to find the right time to tell him that’s all. He was… away, for a while, and he came back tonight so I haven’t told him.”
“Well, I don’t know you two, but i can tell you two love each other very much.”
“We do. We’ve been in love for over 10 years.”
“Young love. Reminds me and my late husband.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry!”
“It’s okay, honey. It’s been about 6 years now. He was overseas serving our country, and he passed away a hero. We were together since we were 18, we had 26 wonderful years, 6 beautiful kids. He used to look at me just like your boyfriend looks at you. If he’s anything like my Michael was, he’s going to be thrilled when you tell him you’re pregnant.”
“I think so too. He doesn’t have to wait much longer.”
There’s a knock at the open door, JJ standing in the doorway.
“Hey, are you allowed visitors?”
“Yeah, come in.” Bridgett says.
“I’ll come back in 30 to check on you.” The nurse says, walking out of the room.
JJ walks in, sitting at the end of Bridgett’s bed. “How are you?”
“My head is throbbing, my body hurts, and I feel like I’m going to be picking glass out of my hair for the next 6 months. How are you?”
“I’m okay. Just going crazy not knowing what’s going on. I’m worried about Emily. Monica’s here. She uh…” JJ clears her throat. “She said her goodbyes to Stephen.”
Bridgett groans softly, shaking her head. “How bad did she take it?”
“Like you’d expect. Monica’s strong but having to say goodbye to your husband so unexpectedly… I can’t imagine.”
“God me either.”
“Guess you and Spence didn’t have the homecoming you wanted.”
“No, but I’m just glad he’s home. Thank you for being there for him when I couldn’t be. And being there for me too.”
JJ smiles and holds Bridgett’s hand. “Of course. You guys are my family and that’s what family does.”JJ’s phone rings from her hand, she puts it on speaker. “Hey Luke.”
“Hey. How are you guys holding up?”
“Okay. Any word on Emily?” Bridgett asks.
“Yeah, we got her. She’s okay, a little banged up but we’re on our way to the hospital to get her all patched up.”
Both women breathe out a sigh of relief at the update.
“What about Scratch?” Bridgett asks.
“He’s dead. We won’t have to worry about him anymore.” Luke responds.
For the second time that night, relief envelops Bridgett’s body and mind. It was truly one last thing that she had to worry about ever again.
***
A few days had passed since the night from hell happened. Spencer didn’t want to go back to his apartment, so he had been staying with Bridgett at her place. He had been taking care of her since she was still sore and tending to the cuts on the side of her head. Neither of them had talked much about the events leading up to Spencer’s arrest, but it wasn’t the time. They had just gotten back from Stephen’s funeral, which was emotionally draining to say the least.
Bridgett dresses herself after drying her body off, stepping out of a much needed shower, she grabs a pair of athletic shorts and throws a plain blue big shirt over her body, letting her hair air dry. She walks out of the bathroom and into her bedroom, seeing Spencer fast asleep on the bed. She quietly picks up the clothes off the floor she had thrown about when they got home, throwing them in the hamper in the corner of the room.
“Are you going to come lay down with me?” Spencer mutters, his eyes still closed.
Bridgett smiles, walking back and climbing into bed, snuggling up behind Spencer, wrapping her arm around his waist.
He gladly let her hold him for a change, enjoying the feeling of her touch.
“Can I ask you a question?” Bridgett peeps from behind him.
Spencer turns around, opening his eyes to look straight at hers. Bridgett smiles at him sweetly, touching his cheek lightly with her fingers.
“Before you ask your question, I love you.” He whispers.
“I love you too, baby boy.” She responds, kissing the tip of his nose. “So, my question, and I promise I’m not mad about it, I’m just curious, why did you lie about Mexico?”
The question takes him off guard, even if he wanted to lie, he couldn’t. Especially looking into the eyes he was so in love with.
“I shouldn’t have, I know.”
“By why did you?”
Spencer sighs, making a flat expression.  “I… I just wanted to help my mom. The medicine I was giving her isn't cleared here but all the research I did I wanted to give it a try.” He clears his throat, trying to prevent himself from falling apart.
“You could have told me what you were doing Spence. I’m your girlfriend and that’s what I’m here for. For you to confide in.”
“For you to talk me out of it?”
“I wouldn’t ha-.”
“You’re telling me you would have been okay with me going to Mexico every few weeks to get illegal medicine for my mom? Putting my life at risk, my job, all of that?” Spencer begins to raise his voice at her.
“Don’t start yelling at me.” Bridgett spits, sitting up in bed and scooting away from him.
Spencer takes a deep breath, closing his eyes. “I’m sorry. This just isn’t the conversation I wanted to have right now.”
“Well when do you want to schedule a time to have this conversation, Spencer? I wasn’t mad, but now, I am.”
“Mad at what? The fact that I lied to you and you didn’t realize?”
Bridgett shoots him a dirty look, getting off her bed quickly. Not bothering to respond to him.
“And now you’re walking away?”
“Yes I’m walking away!” Bridgett yells, whipping her head around. “I’m sorry that I fucking care about you and was scared shitless when I got that call from that drunk, that you were in jail. I’m sorry that I was fucking concerned for your fucking well-being. And I’m fucking sorry that I want to know why you felt the need to fucking lie to me and the rest of the team.” She yelled. “This was the worst 3 months of my life. Worrying about if I was ever going to see you again outside of prison. I was terrified when I found out you stabbed yourself, I thought you were losing your goddamn mind! And it wasn’t like I could go see you, because you refused to see me!”
“Because Luke said you were always a mess after coming to see me. Why would I continue to put you through that?” Spencer yells back.
“Because even though I was a mess after seeing you, what pulled me through was the thought of seeing your face again. You kept me sane! Pulled me out of the slump I was in. You know how heartbroken I was when I got sent away and told I wasn’t authorized to see you? Only to find out you were the one who took me off this list. What if we didn’t get lucky, and you stayed in prison until you went to trial? The thought of not being able to see you all those months, killed me.” Her voice breaks at the end, losing her composure. Wiping her eyes with the collar of her shirt. “Fuck I’m so sick of crying.” She mutters loud enough for Spencer to hear.
Spencer gets off the bed, walking up to her and pulling her against him. He rubbed the back of her head as she cried into his chest. He felt like an ass for yelling at her and getting angry at her for asking a question. “I’m sorry. For everything. Lying, keeping you away, yelling at you. All of it. I’m sorry.” His own voice breaking.
Bridgett looks up at Spencer, grabbing his face. “Look at me, do not lie to me ever again. I don’t care if it’s illegal, if you think I’m going to talk you out of it. Do not do this to me again. Promise me.”
Spencer nods his head softly. “I promise.” Kissing her forehead, holding his lips against her. He snakes his arm underneath the back of her shirt, his cold limb making goosebumps scatter through Bridgett’s body.
“I love you.” Bridgett says against his chest, clinging onto the shoulder of his shirt. She picks her head up and stretches up to kiss him.
Spencer firmly kisses her back, making her press up against him.
They hadn’t had sex since Spencer had been back. Once Bridgett had gotten out of the hospital the other night, both of them slept like the dead, almost a whole 18 hours. Then Spencer was helping his mom move her belongings to a new care facility. All the emotional and physical obstacles they’ve both been dealing with. It was finally time to give him his proper homecoming.
THE BASTERDS’S ANGELS
Tumblr media
Somewhere in a safe place in the French countryside, a group of armed men prepared themselves for the mission they were sent for: killing Nazis and sending fear through the ranks of the Wehrmacht based in France.
And until now, they managed to accomplish their work, as the German soldiers only knew them as The Basterds.
Led by Lieutenant Aldo Raine, those volunteers took pleasure in killing and terrifying their foes, as many of the Basterds were Jewish.
Looking at his men, Aldo smirked: he could not wait to hunt down new Nazis.
"I know that look. Looking for new scalps, darling?"
Smiling, he turned and saw the woman he cherished the most.
"You know me too well, honey."
"That's why we're husband and wife!"
"Ya damn right, Winona."
The woman named Winona was, indeed, Aldo's wife. Born in the Cherokee tribe, this woman was the embodiment of the Native American female warrior: athletic, wise, loyal, and brave.
Moreover, she was the only woman in this group. Some people would think that a woman had nothing to do in the U.S. Army.
But quoteth Donny, "She kills more nazis in one day than I kill in three days."
The Cherokee woman has already won the respect of her peers since the first day in France. Besides, she gained a gruesome reputation among the Nazis based in France. They called her "The Cherokee Amazon."
The Apache and the Cherokee: a match made in heaven who took their enemies in hell...
Aldo put his arm around her shoulders:
"Can ya believe it, honey? You and I, in France, killing fascists... How pleasant it is!"
"I agree."
"It's like our honeymoon!"
Winona laughed at this statement.
"Well, a very blood-thirsty honeymoon. But honestly, I would never imagine killing Nazis without you, Aldo!"
"Aw, sweetie! Ya know how to talk to me!" he grinned before kissing her.
A sweet moment interrupted by the booming voice of Donny Donowitz, aka "The Bear Jew."
"Aw, look at those lovebirds!"
"Damn ya, Donny! I was enjoying this moment!"
"We have noticed!" smirked Wicki.
Raine rolled his eyes but smirked. His men are the best among the best, especially when it comes to killing Nazis.
They all came from different backgrounds, had various faiths, but for sure, they were more than ready to wipe out the Third Reich.
Of course, among his men, there was Donny Donowitz, a sturdy chap from Boston and the other leader of the group. This man gained the nickname of "Bear Jew" after he bashed the skull of dozens of Nazis with his prized baseball bat.
Then, you have Wilhelm Wicki, who fled his native Austria after the Anchlüss. Probably one of the oldest members of this group, his remarkable marksmanship made him a feared sniper.
Sitting next to Wicki was Hugo Stiglitz, a former German soldier. He hated the regime to the core, and he managed to kill 13 Gestapo officers. The Basterds get him out of his jail, and now, Hugo became one of them. More silent than some of his teammates, he easily scared people around him.
Near them, a young man was quietly reading a book, enjoying this peaceful moment. This young man was Smithson Utivich, another Jewish-American soldier. Like his friends, he enrolled in this group to save the remaining European Jews from Nazism's clutches. Even if he was not the most impressive, he excelled at killing Nazis.
The one next to Utivich, who was taking a small rest, was Omar Ulmer, his best friend. A remarkable soldier, Private Ulmer often works along with Smithson and Donny during his missions. Fast and efficient, the Nazis did not stand a chance against him.
Not far from Omar, his friend Gerold Hirschberg was laughing with his comrades. Hirschberg was considered a loyal and cheerful friend by his fellow Basterds. However, his hot-tempered character made him the official trouble seeker of the group, as he often found himself in danger.
The other man talking with Hirshcberg was named Michael Zimmermann. He has the two roles of driver and explosives expert. The Germans muttered that he was a crazy man who escaped from an asylum. But the truth was that Michael only became mad when he saw a swastika. But for the Basterds, he was a pleasant companion and a joyful friend.
Sitting at his right, his best friend named Simon Sakowitz was tidying his medical stuff. Before the war, he was a brilliant medicine student, but he decided to put his studies on hiatus to enroll in the army. Simon was a skilled and efficient doctor in his group and also an appreciated friend.
Smoking a cigarette, Andy Kagan smirked while looking at his teammates. The young Mister Kagan came from a wealthy family and started a promising acting career in Hollywood until he decided to rescue his people in Europe. He was the spy of the group, a master of manipulation and charm.
Leaning against a tree, Archie Hicox looked at his allies with a mixture of puzzlement and amusement. This British officer was the last addition to the group. In the beginning, the MI5 spy did not get along with the Basterds, as he saw them as a bunch of crazy rednecks while the others considered him as a snobbish man. But the more they worked together, the most they trusted each other, and mutual respect started to settle between them.
All those men were here in France for one reason: killing Nazis.
Something they excelled, as they did earlier, as they exterminated an entire patrol an hour ago.
Now, they enjoyed a moment of calm to relax before reaching another town.
Suddenly, Aldo gently stroke Winona's cheek and said:
"Get ready, my lady. We're gonna move!"
"At your orders, Mr. Raine!" smirked the woman as she started to pick up her belongings.
Smiling, the Lieutenant turned to his men and exclaimed:
"Get up, boys! We move!"
"Uh? What? What's going? Are we attacked?" asked Omar, startled.
"Nah, Omar. The Lieutenant just said we're moving. Get up now!" explained Donny.
"Where are we going?" asked Simon.
"Probably somewhere near Fontainebleau. At least, we have to get closer to Paris," replied Utivich.
"Exactly, Smitty! I hope I will have time to pay my debt off once we got there!" sighed Zimmermann as he finished packing up his stuff.
As he picked his backpack, Hirschberg noticed Hugo, who trimmed his knife in his bag. Smirking, the young Basterd came nearer to his comrade. A little game that Andy and Wicki had noticed.
"Oh my Lord! Here we go again! Will Hirschberg never learn his lessons?" sighed the Austrian.
"I wonder how it will end this time: will Hirschberg have a kicked butt or a broken nose?" smirked the American.
Meanwhile, Gerold was close to Hugo and said with an authoritative tone:
"C'mon, Stiglitz! Hurry up! We have to go!"
The German deserter turned and glared at his teammate:
"Lass mich in Ruhe, Hirschberg."  (Leave me alone, Hirschberg).
"Why do I fear the worst?" sighed Simon as he pinched the bridge of the nose.
He counted how many times he healed the bruises on Hirschberg after the latter tried to pick up on someone stronger than him.
At the same time, Hirschberg teased Hugo while the latter tried to contain his anger. But his patience was running thin...
"Ich werde es dir nicht zwei mal sagen." (I won't tell you twice).
"Aw, come on! Don't look at me like that! I am trying to tell you that you're a bit slow!"
"Stop that, Gerold! You're going to regret it!" smirked Andy.
Indeed, Hugo was pissed off by Gerold. Fuming, he took his knife and put it on Hirschberg's throat.
"Leave me alone. Now!" growled the German man.
Gulping, the young Basterd raised his hands in defeat.
"O-OK, Stiglitz. I stop. Can you lower your knife, please?"
Growling, Hugo put his knife back in his vest while Gerold ran away.
"We told you that you're going to have trouble, Geri!" snickered Michael.
As for Wicki, he turned to Hugo and asked:
"War es notwendig, Hirschberg einen Schrecken einzujagen, Hugo?" (Was it necessary to scare Hirschberg, Hugo?)
"Er ist eine Nervensäge." (He is a pain in the ass.) snarled Hugo as he walked towards Donny and Omar.
Wilhelm rolled his eyes and muttered:
"Ich schwöre bei Gott, die würden mich wahnsinnig machen!" (I swear to God, they would drive me crazy!)
"C'MON, BOYS! WE HAVE A LONG ROAD!" yelled Aldo as he led the march along with Winona.
Soon, all the commando started their long road across the French countryside. Unbeknownst to them, they were about to make an encounter that would change their lives for a long time...
Meanwhile, Maddie and Ada wandered through the forest, looking for shelter.
A little earlier, they had almost been spotted by a German patrol, which had scared them.
Now, their priority was to find a safe place while they waited for help.
As they walked through the woods, Maddie saw a cave:
"Look, aunty! A shelter!"
"Well done, Maddie! Let's go!"
They rushed to the hiding place and checked that nothing was inside.
Once assured that they were alone, Ada ordered her niece:
"Listen to me, Maddie: you're going to stay here and make no noise, okay?"
"What about you? What are you going to do?" asked the little girl.
"I'll try to find something to eat. Keep quiet, do you understand?"
Maddie nodded. Smiling, Ada stroked her head:
"I'll be back soon, I promise!"
Then, she walked away while Maddie hid behind a rock.
The young girl hated being alone. Of course, she knew that it was necessary. But the truth was that she was scared.
She was afraid to be alone, at the mercy of the Germans. After all, what could a seven-year-old girl do when faced with armed soldiers?
And then, who knew what could happen to her aunt?
Well, the little girl knew that Ada was capable of defending herself. But if anything happened to her, she would not be able to survive.
Suddenly, she heard voices and footsteps approaching the cave. Covering her mouth and trying to be as hidden as possible, Maddie tried to figure out who had just arrived.
She kept her ears open and listened to the conversation:
"Great, guys! We can stop here!"
"Finally, it's about time! We must have been walking for hours, and my legs are killing me!"
"Stop complaining, Gerold!"
"Oh no! You're not going to start bickering again!"
Maddie was intrigued: these people seemed to be speaking in English. Well, at least she wasn't dealing with Nazis, which was good news.
But what were these people doing here?
Lost in her thoughts, she didn't hear anyone enter the cave until a man's voice asked:
"What on earth are you doing here?"
Horrified, she looked up and saw a medium-sized man staring at her with a surprised look.
As for Omar, he did not expect to find a child alone in a place like this.
He called his boss:
"Lieutenant, come and see!"
"What?" asked Aldo, who arrived in his turn and saw the little girl.
"Look at that! It's quite funny!"
"What's going on?" asked Wicki.
For all answers, the two men came out of the cave, escorting Maddie. The little girl was looking at the rest of the group with a frightened look.
"It seems that our hideout already had an occupant!" declared Hicox.
"But who's crazy enough to leave a kid all alone in the wild?" exclaimed Michael.
"I don't know," muttered Andy.
Simon, in his role as a doctor, walked over to the girl:
"I need to check her out. Who knows, maybe she needs treatment?"
"Do your job, doc!"
Sakowitz kneeled in front of Maddie and asked her:
"Do you speak English?"
She hesitantly replied with a small voice:
"Y-Yes, doctor!"
"Aw, ain't she cute?" smiled Donny.
"Low your voice, Don. She is scared!" said Winona while looking at the young girl.
Meanwhile, Simon carefully examined Maddie. He realized that she might suffer from malnutrition.
"Oh God, look how thin she is!"
He turned to Aldo.
"Lieutenant, do we have some food to give her?"
"For sure! Omar, gimme some bread, would ya?"
"Right now, sir!" replied Ulmer as he threw a piece of bread.
Raine caught it and handed the bread to Maddie.
"Here, ya can have some!"
Hesitantly, the little girl took the bread and muttered:
"Thank you!"
"Cute and polite: you must be a lovely little person!" smirked Archie.
Maddie took a bite and ate slowly, enjoying the taste of the bread.
"Poor little thing! She must not have eaten for days!" declared Wicki.
Winona came nearer and asked:
"What's your name, little one?"
Once she finished her mouthful, the little girl replied:
"Maddie Mandelbaum!"
"Okay, Maddie. Now, tell me: what are you doing here, all alone?"
Looking around, Maddie replied:
"It's because I flee!"
"What do you flee?"
For an answer, Maddie picked her necklace and showed a silver Star of David.
That's all it took for the Basterds to understand what Maddie was trying to escape.
"I see... You're a Jew, right?"
The little girl nodded.
"I see... But what are you doing by yourself?"
"I'm not alone: my auntie went to get food."
"Well, okay. And what's your auntie's name?" asked Smithson.
A female voice answered:
"Why don't you ask me?"
Everyone turned to Ada, who was holding a bag over her shoulder.
The young woman looked suspiciously at this troop. Even though they were not wearing Wehrmacht uniforms, she did not want to take the risk of crossing paths with Gestapo soldiers.
"Well, I guess you're the famous aunt?" asked Omar.
"Indeed. I am Adela Mandelbaum. And you?"
"We are American... with a German deserter, an American-Austrian soldier, and a British officer," replied Andy.
Sighing with relief, Ada put down her bag.
"At least there's some good news in this mess!"
Maddie rushed to her aunt and said:
"Ce sont des gens bien, tata. Ils m’ont donné du pain!"  (They're good people, Auntie. They gave me bread!)
Aldo walked over to Ada and introduced himself:
"Lieutenant Aldo Raine, nice to meet ya. So like this, you're the one who manages survival?"
"Yes, indeed."
"I see. And how long have ya been alone?"
"I don't know. I'm more concerned about escaping the Germans than counting the days."
Aldo nodded before replying:
"And I suppose you're hiding because you're Jewish, Imma right?"
Ada sighed.
"Exactly."
Donny spoke up:
"Lieutenant, we can't leave them alone. They'll get caught by the Krauts!"
"But they're civilians: we can't afford to have potential targets with us!" grumbled Hirschberg.
Hugo glared at him:
"Put yourself in the kid's shoes: would you like to be left at the mercy of those sickos? I don't think so."
Simon added:
"Besides, if they stay with us, they'll be safe. What do you think, Lieutenant?"
Raine massaged the back of his neck, doubtful.
"It's true that having two civilians with us can be a problem..."
He met his wife's gaze as she stared at him pleadingly. And if there was one person who could make Aldo Raine give in, it was Winona.
He sketched a smile:
"But as ya seem to me two brave women, it seems logical to me that ya stay with us!
This decision was greeted with enthusiasm by the rest of the team.
"I thank you for your help."
"No worries. After all, several of my guys are Jewish."
The young woman asked:
"Before I forget, Lieutenant Raine..."
"Yes, Miss?"
"What is your mission here?"
At these moments, she saw all the Basterds sketch a toothy grin. And the Lieutenant's answer did not hide their intentions:
"We parachuted into France for one mission and one mission only: to kill Nazis!"
Hugo asked:
"Doesn't that cause you problems?"
At these words, he saw a gleam in Ada's eye that he knew all too well. He could see the sorrow and hatred for the Nazis in her brown orbs.
And the determined tone of her voice confirmed his impression:
"On the contrary, it pleases me to hear that my people are being avenged. Hitler's foot soldiers stole my life and threatened my niece. I lost my family, and I don't know if they are alive or if those Gestapo goons shot them!"
She turned to Aldo and declared:
"Lieutenant, I know I look like a simple damsel in distress, but I want revenge. I want to make them pay for the evil they've done."
Impressed by this sudden determination, Aldo asked:
"What can ya do?"
"I'm an excellent shot, and I can fight."
"That's not so ladylike, coming from a young woman!"
Ada smiled:
"Who said I was ladylike?"
"My aunt is the best in the world... right after Mom!" pointed Maddie.
Aldo smirked and held out his hand.
"In that case, welcome to the team, Ada! Just so you know, if you join this commando, you owe me 100 Nazi scalps!"
Without hesitation, Ada grasped the outstretched hand and shook it in agreement.
"I will settle that debt, Lieutenant. And I will die trying if I have to!"
"That's what I like to hear!"
"But I want you to promise to look out for Maddie, no matter what!"
"PROMISED!" exclaimed the Basterds.
At that moment, Maddie's face lit up with an adorable smile that seemed to shine through the dim light of the Fontainebleau woods. Now she had nothing to fear from the Germans because now she had found guardian angels armed with guns and baseball bats.
As for Ada, it was a new life for her that began. She was not a prey anymore. Now, she was the predator.
The Germans better start running because she won't have mercy. And Ada Mandelbaum always kept her words...
Thanks for the reading!
Rescuing the baby (DC)
Barry Allen sighed as he was in the third hour of a 6 hour car trip, wondering for the millionth time why he had let his loving wife talk him into using a stupid car when he was the fastest man alive.
even as he cruised at a solid 55 MPH on the highway, it was like a slow walk to the man who when he wasn't being a CSI or a loving husband, happened to be the flash.
Of course he knew WHY and had agreed with her at the time, that Barry Allen managing to make it from Central city to Gotham in under 10 minutes would of raised all sorts of flag, but still. He hadn't even enjoyed the conference he'd been forced to go to by his supervisor, the highlight of the 3 day event had been hanging out with Batman.
Still it was over with and he vowed to find a way to squirm out of the next conference, even if he had to let a super villain or two out of jail. (Ok, he wouldn't actually do that but it was fun to picture on the long drive.)
Still there was a highlight on taking the long drive, it would give him a legitimate excuse to stop by and check on his favorite (well ok, only) nephew though his marriage to Iris: Wally west.
The boy had made a habit of spending any and all vacation time he could get (within reason) coming out and visiting them and while it made things a little harder on Barry's double life, seeing the freckled smiling face of the boy always made up for the slight inconveniences.
The only downside to making the trip without Iris (who had been kept busy with work) was there was no one to act like a filter between Barry and Rudy west, Wally's very unpleasant father who made his dislike of Barry well know while also never QUITE insulting Barry and giving him a excuse to put the bastard in his place. Barry knew that while Rudy would sight Barry's low income and long work hours as reasons that Barry might wanna find a 'real job', it was more the fact Wally looked up more to Barry then his own father that had turned the man more and more sour.
Barry also couldn't be totally sure, and wally wouldn't talk about it but since the poor boy had started bed wetting again Barry was convinced Ruby had started abusing his son, Mentally if not physically and disguising it as a spanking helped little bed wetters stop (a belief Barry did not follow)
Still he was sure wally would light up when Barry swung by as a surprise and if it just happened to ruin Rudy's day, gee, wouldn't that be a shame.
Rudy was home alone, having a beer (or two or three) and watching a game when there was a knock at the door. he started to call out for his wife Mary to go and answer the door before recalling where she was and got up out of his lazy-boy , cursing slowly as he spilled some beer on his plain white t-shirt.
"Hold your damn horses! I'm coming!" he called.
Already in a bad mood, it got worst as he saw who was at the door and sighing like he had the WORST luck, he opened the front door, sipping his bee that was still in his right hand.
"What do YOU want?" Rudy asked.
"Hi to you too Rudy." Barry said dryly , looking at his watch. "Little early for a brewski isn't it?"
"Don't tell me you drove all the way here to give me shit for enjoying a cold one on my day off." Rudy snorted. the booze took away what little filters he had and well, it wasn't like Iris or Wally or Mary were there to give him any shit.
"..I'm actually on my way back from a conference, and thought I'd drop by and see wally for a bit. and maybe enjoy your charming company." Barry said, then added. "Though PLEASE tell me you haven't been drinking in front of him? That's a bad example Rudy."
"Well Barry, when I want you to tell me how to raise my son I'll ask. Maybe I could give you advise on how to raise YOUR kids..Oh wait." Rudy said, smirking then taking a long drink, not aware the man he was insults could of stranded him in the middle of a city in just his boxers because he'd even know what was happening, and that Barry was fighting the urge to do so at this moment. "in any case, Wally's not here. He's in the ER with his mother. the little Klutz fell down the stairs and pretty sure he broke his ankle."
"Wait what? If he broke his ankle why aren't you-" Barry started, anger and fear mixing.
"Kid shit his pants and smelled something awful, so I stayed behind. wasn't room for me in the ambulance." Rudy paused and anther smirk. "and since I've been drinking I didn't wanna drive, I thought you'd appreciate that Barry."
"..How did Wally fall down the steps?" Barry asked, voice going low as something about the attuide and smugness in the man's voice had Barry worried.
"Stupid little dork tripped over his own pissy diaper when it hit the floor. you know he's wearing 24/7 now? started pissing himself at school!"
"...Rudy I happen to be VERY good at my job, and I'm going to drive over to the ER now and talk with Mary and see how wally's doing. If there's something you wanna tell me now, it'll help you out in the long run." Barry said, pushing his way into the house and the smile vanished from Rudy's face.
"I..I don't know what your-" Rudy stammered out, looking anywhere but at Barry now.
as much as Barry wanted to get the story out of Ruby, maybe go a little batman on him, his biggest concern was getting to wally before Mary, ever the dotting wife could convince Wally to keep the truth to himself.
"This is NOT over Rudy. Think about what I said about helping yourself. It IS what your best at." Barry said and stormed out.
Rudy gulped and slumped to the floor, wondering if it might of been time to call in some vacation time and take a little trip before Barry came back.
Barry's knuckles were going white as he drove to the nearest hospital, he wanted to just zip over but having the flash show up for a kid only Barry should know would of been against secret identity rule number one.
Still the time wasted on getting a parking spot and having to get directions irked him to no end when he knew he could of searched the place in less then 1.5 seconds.
Finding Mary sitting outside of the OR, he walked over to her and was silently counting down in his head as she looked annoyed and mad she was waiting on her only child to get out of surgery then worried.
"Barry, what are you doing here?" she asked, shocked and sounding a little worried.
"I went to stop by for a visit and Rudy told me what happened.." Barry said, then added. "How's Wally?"
"It's taking longer then they thought, they had to stop and change his diapers because he shit himself again. Like it wasn't taking long enough." Mary said and rolled her eyes then caught herself. "I mean, I just.. I'm annoyed he hurt himself is all. he should be really more careful where he puts his toys." She added fast.
Already spotting the difference in stories, Barry just rolled with it.
"Yeah, Rudy said it was a toy truck I believe. " Barry lied., hoping to catch her in the lie.
She looked confused for a second, then nodded.
"well, since he's started needing diaper ALL the time and his friends at school have shunned him, he's gone pretty infantile." she said.
"..Mary with this happening at home you know child services will be investigating right? So as a CSI my advice to you is to make sure you tell the truth. whatever it may be." Barry said, crossing his arms across his chest.
he didn't have the broad shoulders of Batman or superman, but he a twig either and cut a imposing frame.
"W-what do you mean by that?" She asked.
"Rudy told me Wally tripped down the stairs because of his diapers, you told me a toy, I'm damn good at my job Mary but it doesn't take a genius to guess what happened. I SAW the bruises last time me and Iris had him." Barry said flatly.
"I-I swear, it's not me Barry!" Mary said, keeping her voice low and looking around the waiting room now. it was only the two of them and it was clear she was scared now. "if I don't go along with it Rudy wi-" She started to add, But Barry cut her off.
"Iris and you went swimming together not too long ago and she would of told me about any bruises. If Rudy was mentally harming you then you would of taken this chance to out him. So drop the victim act."
"..Oh like you know what it's like, having a promising young boy end up pissing himself and shitting him and looking at his own parents with disdain because he'd rather be with his aunt and her side piece!" Mary snarled.
"watch your tone. Look, I'm willing to help you and Rudy out with this, stay out of jail because I don't want wally to have to visit you in prison..but the price is going to be simple and clear." Barry said.
"Let me guess, you need a loan?" Mary said, a smug smirk on her face reaching for a check book.
"I don't want your Money. I want wally somewhere safe. Me and Iris are going to take custody of him and your NOT going to contest it."
Mary argue, she called the house to tell Rudy about it but he wasn't answering having already taken off, leaving a note for Mary on where to find him and in the end Barry had his way. With Mary taking a taxi back home Barry cleared that he was the impending legal guardian and then located a pay phone. Calling Iris as he wanted on Wally to recover after his surgery to tell her everything that had happened, The only part of the whole thing she disagreed with was Barry letting them off Scott free.
After that he put in a call to a few friends in the DA and family court back in Central city and got assured the whole thing would be settled with minimal fuss.
Wally giggled softly as they wheeled him out of recovery. he was naturally in a wheelchair and dressed in a green gown that fluttered in the AC of the building revealing the thick green tinted diapers he was wearing and his left foot had a sock on it while the right had a thick off white cast around it. The boys freckles stood out as he smiled, his orangish red hair a mess and his eyes totally glazed over.
"Unca Barry! Hiiii!" he giggled and for a second went to get out of the chair before a nurse gently pushed him back down.
"Lizard queen, we talked about this, you can't walk yet." she said with a smile on her face and a amused tone.
"..Lizard queen?" Barry asked.
"Your nephew apparently has next to no tolerance for pain killers and well.." the blond nurse started but was cut off by Wally tossing his arms up.
"I AM THE LIZARD QUEEN! FEAR ME!" He giggled and coo'ed.
Barry snorted and nodded.
"I see. well is her Majesty ready to be signed out yet?" he asked, coming over and patting a head on wally head, a paternal gesture to most, and it was head, though he was also looking for lumps or bruises.
"we'd like to keep him for a little while longer, at least until he's more lucid and well, his clothes are clean and out of the landry. I'm sure the lizard queen would prefer not to drive around in just a diaper." the nurse chuckled."besides, you might wanna go and stock up on some item's Mr. Allen."
"Heh, touche. Wall man, you gonna be ok with the nurse while Uncle Barry goes and gets some supplies for you?"
"I can count to purple." Wally giggled and held out his arms for a hug.
"Oh wow, thats VERY talented!" Barry chuckled and kneeled down, Hugging the smaller boy gently and then feeling Wally slump and pulling back, alarmed.
"Relax Mr.Allen, it's the drugs, he's just been sleepy. Someone will stay with hi in his room to watch him." She said, putting a reassuring hand on Barry's shoulder.
the statement was made to sound like it was because of his drugged state, but the underline was that they were making sure Mr. and Mrs.west didn't come back.
"I'll be back as fast as I can." Barry said and took off.
Getting in the car he drove out to a field where he could park it and felt assured it would be left alone for at least a few minutes. Sliding out from behind the wheel and hitting a special ring he wore out popped a compressed version of his costume and making around in a blur, he quickly suited up and then put his clothes in the back seat of his car.
Experience had taught him that when it came to what he was likely going to need to to to pack a duffel bag for wally, his normal clothes wouldn't of made it.
in the micro seconds it took him to get to the west household a check check confirmed that the doors were locked and not wanting to give them any chance of coming back and getting him or Iris in trouble Barry backed up a few feet in their back yard where the sight of the flash wouldn't be seen(or at least not as easily) for the 2 seconds it would take to ready himself for this.
One of his more useful skills could also be terribly destructive if he wasn't careful so taking a deep breath he readied himself then started to dash at the back door, willing his molecules to vibrate just right and he was able to phase though the door clearly, not blowing it up like he'd done when he'd first learned this trick.
Racing up the stair Barry helped himself to a duffel bag and filled it with some of Wally's clothes, recalling his favorite t-shirts and pants, and as well as the boys gaming devices and a few of his action figures and books, and of course the teddy bear wearing a costume just like Barry's that they'd made at a make bear last year.
with the duffel bag full Barry helped himself to a back pack now, and filled it with the thick, over the top babyish diapers the wests had gotten their son, that while cute and made Barry warm up to a idea he was getting, made him fume as it was clear they had been trying to shame the boy out of his accidents.
he also helped himself to the changing supplies and noted the extra steanght diaper rash cream and made a note to ask the nurse about if wally had a rash when he got back.
Giving the room one last look over, Barry slowed down enough to be hit by the smell of the diaper pail in the corner and grimaced, smell molecules couldn't affect him when he was moving at super speed but they tended to come back with a vengeance once he slowed down.
Looking in the diaper pail the thing didn't even have a bag in it and was set where the sun was sure to hit it as well, and had marking on the inside showing how full it had to be before Wally would of been allowed to change it.
"..Should of smashed the bastard into a pulp when I had the chance." he growled, then sped back up, leaving the room.
he simply unlocked the back door and placed the bags on the grass as they wouldn't of survived the trip though the door then went back in and re locked it and zipped back though it before packing the bags in the car and changing back to his normal clothes, the whole thing taking all of maybe five minutes.
Getting behind the wheel of the car, he fished out a JLA commutator he kept with him at all times (which all Justice leaguer's were required to do, though some like Green tended to forget) and made a call to Batman, for the plan he had to make wally happy and settle in at home and life with the Allen's, he was going to need a bit of finical help.
Once the situation was explained Bruce was only too happy to help though recommended that they take Wally's recovery slowly, but warned Barry he wouldn't hold back if the west's happened to end up in Gotham city.
Barry took Batman's advice and extended his leave, even after wally was discharged from the hospital they didn't go to Central city right away, Barry taking the sullen and emotional boy to several road side attractions on the drive back.
wally had been unwilling to confirm that he'd been pushed down the stairs at first, even when it became clear that his parents had admitted to at least some of it. (as it turned out he'd been pushed down the stairs twice before this.)
The worried about diaper rash had been confirmed and while Wally whined that he could look after his own diaper changes, Barry was having NONE of that and insisted on changing his nephew, teasing the blushing boy about the freckles on his butt that became more clear as the rash faded.
Wally also was embarrassed at first but grew to like how Barry insisted on carrying the boy instead of making him use his crutches, his thin and light frame made it easy enough.
Getting home to central city Barry was all smiles and wally was actually more relaxed and ok, even eager to see Iris as they pulled up, who was in fact waiting in the drive way for them and rushed out.
"Wally! How are you? Are you ok?" She asked, showering the boy in hugs and kisses and fussing over him as he got out of the car on his crutches, having insisted on not being carried into the house.
"I'm fine aunt Iris, just a little sore. Aunt iris I'm.. Iris.. Barry help!" Wally giggled and then gave a mock plea for help.
"heh, Maybe let him get in the door before you shower him with love?" Barry suggested, getting his bags and Wally's out of the trunk of the car.
"Never!" iris chuckled but did back up, while adding. "Just so you know little guy, expect lots of that from me."
"heh, well I suppose I'll allow that." Wally said, grinning like a goof ball as he made his way towards the front door.
Iris and Barry exchanged grins, as if to say 'that's cute, he thinks he has a choice!'
getting the wall man inside Barry put the bags down by the door and swept Wally off his feet.
"wally, there's a little something that me and your aunt have been meaning to talk with you about, and we think it's going to help your recovery a lot." Barry said, heading for a room on the first floor that had been converted into wallies new room since they didn't like the idea of him having to go up and down stairs.
"Oh? what is it?" wally asked, not even fighting it as he was carried on Barry's hip, his thick diaper puffing out his cargo shorts.
"well, we think a bit of regression therapy would help with your recovery so on that note.." Barry said, and opened the door to Wally's new room.
The wall's were painted flash red with little flash symbols on the walls every few feet and there was a light yellow plush carpet on the floor.
what caught Wally's eyes though as the little guy's jaw dropped was the large changing table and a crib in the room, as well as a large toy chest.
"So.." Iris said coming up and kissing Wally's cheek. "what do you think of your nursery?"
The Outpost is, without a shred of doubt, a shithole.
And Ellen Waverly secretly loves it, even though her fellow ASCANs frown at the tavern’s dilapidated exterior. Anybody who’s anybody knows about the dive bar frequented by astronauts, engineers, and other NASA staffers. Spoken about with hushed reverence, the Outpost is hallowed ground, a right of passage, and a frisson of excitement courses through Ellen as they pause just outside its entrance.
“This is it?” Dani Poole eyes the peeling red paint of the watering hole’s sign, uncertainty lacing her voice as she clutches the strap of her purse.
“Yep.” Molly Cobb lights a cigarette dangling from the corner of her lips. She pulls the door open, hinges squeaking, and the odor of cheap beer and stale smoke wafts out. “You gonna stand out here gaping all night?” Molly strides in without waiting for a response. Patty Doyle’s right on her heels, as usual.
Neither bothers to check if the others are following, but Tracy Stevens manages to catch the door before it swings shut again. “Let’s go, ladies.” She ushers the others inside. “Can’t let Cobb and Doyle have all the fun.”
The stench, now mingled with sweat and other odors barely concealed by fading cologne,  intensifies the second Ellen sets foot inside the dimly lit bar. She wrinkles her nose and, as her eyes adjust, they walk past a beat up cigarette machine into a tightly packed space where all eyes immediately fall on them. Ellen thinks she recognizes some of the men from around the halls of JSC, but in all honesty they blended together in a uniform mass of white oxfords, skinny black ties, and thinly veiled disapproval. They were all just waiting for them to fail.
“Same shit, different toilet,” Molly mutters under her breath. Still, she throws her head back high, cocksure, and swaggers toward a pool table with Patty. Her heavy boot steps draw even more attention, not that Molly pays it any mind, acting as if she’s frequented The Outpost all her life. Like she belongs there.
Ellen does her best to follow Molly’s cue, straightening her spine and making her way around a jukebox that’s seen better days to the last empty table. “First round’s on me,” she announces, surprising even herself.
“That’s mighty generous,” Dani says as she and the others take their seats. The legs of their chairs scrape across the slightly sticky wood floor. They all pretend they don’t see the little brown insects that scatter from beneath the table.
“What would you like?” Ellen asks before any of them decide to hightail it outta there.
“Round of JD,” Tracy responds. “Least that’s what Gordo has when he’s here. If that’s all right with y’all, of course,” she adds to murmurs of assent.
“Coming right up.” Ellen beelines for the bar, continuing to ignore the stares from around the room that make the tips of her ears burn despite her carefully curated air of indifference.
She manages to find a small opening between the occupied, but is disappointed when no one’s there to serve drinks. The bartender probably took a quick break, she thinks, focusing her attention on the black-and-white astronaut photos that line the wood-paneled walls. Idly drumming her fingers against distressed mahogany, she wonders if her picture would ever be prominently displayed alongside the likes of Armstrong, Glenn, and Aldrin. Of if she’ll wash out, as her mother seems to be expecting.
An unsubtle cough interrupts Ellen’s musings, and a man leans an elbow on the bar to her left, a little too close for comfort.
“What’s a pretty thing like you doin’ in a place like this?” He slurs out the oh-so-creative pickup line, alcohol sharp on his breath.
It takes all of her willpower not to roll her eyes in disgust. Instead, she pretends not to hear him, but he persists. “Never seen ya before. Y’all tourists or somethin’? Sightseein’?”
Irritation spikes in Ellen, who has half a mind to correct him, nondisclosure agreements be damned, when another voice cuts in. “Jimbo, what’d I tell you about scaring new customers?”
Ellen turns her head to the right and… Oh.
She’s not quite sure what she expected when it came to The Outpost’s barkeep. Based on the decor, she wouldn’t have been surprised by someone schlubby and indifferent and borderline antisocial. But Ellen most certainly isn’t expecting one of the prettiest women she’s ever seen, with strawberry blonde hair pulled back in a careless ponytail, bangs hanging just above eyes as blue as a cloudless sky. And just like that, Ellen’s starting to understand the appeal of the place.
“C’mon now, Pam,” Jimbo drawls, scratching the back of his head sheepishly. “Jus’ tryin’ to be friendly.”
“Uh huh.” Pam cants her head to the side, unconvinced. “Get outta here before I call your wife.” After he slinks away, Pam gives Ellen an easy smile, bracing her hands on the bar. “Sorry ‘bout that. What can I get for you?”
It’s not until Pam’s closer that Ellen remembers to breathe, the influx of oxygen allowing her to regain control of her faculties and notice the pin fastened to Pam’s maroon t-shirt. It reads in bold white letters against a black background bespeckled by stars: A Woman’s Place Is In Space.
Ellen’s stomach swoops in delight.
“You okay?” Pam asks when Ellen doesn’t answer right away.
“Oh, er,” Ellen intelligently answers in a manner befitting a future astronaut. “Yes, sorry.” Heat rises in her cheeks. “Drinks?” She vaguely gestures toward the other candidates, and the pool table where Molly’s lining up a shot that sends a striped ball straight into a corner pocket. “For me. And my…” Her what? They aren’t exactly friends. Rivals would be closer to the truth, but that would sound weird. And she’s already being weird. She eventually settles on, “Colleagues.”
“Drinks,” Pam repeats, eyebrows disappearing beneath her fringe.
“Yes, um, please.”
“Sure thing.” Pam nods, thoughtfully observing the other women for a moment before fixing her gaze back on Ellen. “Got something particular in mind? Or should I surprise you?”
Ellen somehow manages not to smack the heel of her hand to her forehead. “Sorry. Jack Daniels for, uh, seven.”
“You got it, space cadet.” With a wink, Pam pushes off the bar to fetch a set of lowball glasses and arranges them in a neat row.
It takes a few seconds before Pam’s words catch up with Ellen. Was Pam referring to Ellen’s embarrassingly delayed response or… “Space cadet?”
“You all are the female astronaut candidates, aren’t you?” Pam reaches past several rows of bottles to fetch the whiskey.
“What, uh, what makes you think that?” Ellen nervously brushes her hair behind her ear. No one’s supposed to know who they are until they graduate. If they graduate.
Pam shrugs, the tip of the bottle’s spout poised above the glasses. “Groups of women don’t really wander in here. Plus, some of you match the scuttlebutt I’ve heard here and there.”
“Scuttlebutt?”
“NASA types like to talk, especially after they’ve had a few.”
“That’s…  not unsettling in the slightest.” Ellen tries and fails to tamp down a swell of unease, wondering if they’d all be bounced from the program if word got out.
“Relax.” Pam chuckles, as if reading her mind. She tips the bottle forward, expertly eyeballing  two fingers of brown liquor per glass. “What’s said here stays here. Unless you’re a reporter, then I’m sworn under our unofficial Baldwin rule to kick you out.”
“Definitely not a reporter,” Ellen says, recalling Ed Baldwin’s very public misstep in calling out NASA after the Soviets landed on the moon last summer. Relief eases some of the tension between Ellen’s shoulders. She shifts from one foot to the other, curiosity getting the better of her. “So, what have they been saying? All good things, I’m guessing,” she jokes weakly, all too aware of the rampant sexism among many, if not most, of her male counterparts.
“They wouldn’t dare say anything negative within earshot of me.” Pam taps her equality button. “Would never get a drink otherwise.”
Ellen can’t stop herself from smiling as Pam finishes pouring, sets the bottle down, and crosses her arms.
“Let’s see, I’ve heard that two of them were in Mercury 13. Have chips on their shoulders.” Pam nods toward Molly and Patty playing pool. “I’m guessing they’re the ones over there acting like they own the place.” There’s an underlying current of respect in her voice as her line of sight drifts toward the lone table surrounded by women. “The blonde? I’d bet all my tips that she’s Tracy Stevens. Got those Hollywood looks that’d be Gordo’s type.”
Ellen has to admit she’s impressed. “And me?” She asks before she can stop herself.
Blue eyes darting across Ellen’s face, Pam appraises her in a way that sparks flutters against her ribs. “I’m afraid I haven’t heard about you, Ms...?”
“Waverly.” Ellen sticks her hand out. “Ellen Waverly.”
Pam grasps her hand, grip firm yet gentle, palm warm and smooth. “Nice to meet you, Ellen Waverly.”
“And you’re Pam.”
“That’s right.” Neither of them moves to let go. “Pam Horton.”
Another patron accidentally jostles Ellen’s shoulder and she immediately drops Pam’s hand. “Can I get a couple of beers, Pam?” He asks.
“Just a sec.” She says, transferring the whiskey glasses to a round serving tray.
“So, uh,” Ellen clears her throat as she reaches for her purse. “What do I owe you?” Pam waves her away. “First round’s on the house.”
“Oh, you don’t have to do that.”
“It’d be my pleasure.” Her smile is genuine, radiant. “It’s the least I can do for the first American women heading to space.”
Ellen ducks her head, pleased yet embarrassed. “We haven’t passed yet.”
Pam looks her straight in the eye, and says without hesitation, “You will.”
Warmth blooms inside Ellen’s chest from Pam’s sincerity. “I… thank you." She hopes her face isn't as red as it feels. "We’ll make it up to you.”
“Prove all the assholes out there wrong, and we’ll be square.” Pam pulls out two beer bottles, swiftly pops off their caps, and hands them to the man. She inclines her head toward the tray of Jack Daniels. “I’ll have these out to you in a jiffy.”
With one last nod, Ellen makes her way back to the table, heart pounding and already vowing to return to the shithole that wasn’t so shitty after all.
Mother’s Instinct
A/N: In which Oscar and Cesar’s sister goes into labor but her fiancé, Sad Eyes, isn’t there yet to witness the baby’s birth.
Warnings: strong language, blood, probably a completely inaccurate delivery of a baby
“I am not having this baby on the porch! Get Jose on the phone right now—“ She grabbed a Santo member closest to her by the neck of his tank top, yanking him down level with her face.
“He’s not picking up!” Another one yelled, pacing back and forth with the phone pressed to his ear.
“Call him again— ow!” A sharp contraction hit her as she clutched onto her stomach panting.
“What the fuck is goin’ on here?” Relief flooded through her body for a split second replacing the pain at the sound of her older brother’s voice.
“Oscar. The baby’s coming.” Her voice strained, attempting to do those stupid breathing exercises that were not working at all.
“Did anyone call a fuckin’ ambulance?!” His voice bellowed out across the lawn, making the other members flinch.
“She wouldn’t let us, Spooky, said she wanted to wait for Sad Eyes.” Oso spoke up first, looking at him with a worried expression.
“Are you crazy?! We’re going to the hospital— ahora!” Oscar leaned down to help up his sister by her upper arm, ignoring her pleas of not wanting to go just yet in case her fiancé showed up.
“Oscar— we have to wait for him! Aghhh!” A loud yelp of pain passed her lips, gripping her brother’s hand so tight he hissed.
“You can’t wait any longer. Cesar, get inside grab the hospital bag. We’re leaving now whether you like it or not.” His gruff tone leaving her no room to argue as Cesar ran inside the house to get the go bag.
“Help me get ‘er up.” Oscar nodded to Oso who immediately complied. With an arm each under hers, they helped her walk to the waiting vehicle at her pace.
“He can’t miss the birth of his baby.” She whimpered quietly, making her brother’s heart break but nonetheless put her in his car slowly.
“If anyone hears from him, tell him where we are.” Oscar commanded Oso who wasted no time in checking if he had gotten a call back yet.
“Good luck, hermana, we’re praying for a safe delivery. Te amo.” Cesar kissed her head and then her round belly, saying a small prayer with his palm against her stomach.
“Te amo— gracias Cesar.” She whispered before groaning in pain slightly, leaning back in the passenger seat.
The red Impala pulled off the curb and onto the street, racing to the nearest hospital.
“Stay with me, alright? He’ll be here. We ain’t know baby girl was comin’ this early—“
“Baby boy—“ She managed to grit out through her teeth.
Some of the gang had been convinced it would be a baby girl, even Jose himself. She felt it was going to be a baby boy, claiming it was a “mother’s instinct” to know the sex of the baby. Plus, she’d read one too many old wives tales on Google to help her come up with the decision.
Even though he was mad that she waited this long before telling him she was having labor pains, he couldn’t help but smile and shake his head at her stubborn attitude.
Her water hadn’t broken yet though the contractions were stronger than ever. A gasp left her lips as she clutched onto the dashboard, nails digging into it, breathing heavily.
“We’re almost there. Hold on.” She didn’t miss the panic in Oscar’s voice as they arrived into the emergency department. Oscar came around on her side to help her out.
“I can’t— I can’t get out of the car.” She struggled to get up off of the seat, panting when she tried to lift herself, a sharp pain shooting through her abdomen.
Oscar let go of her hand, “Just don’t move,” He turned his head towards two EMT workers clearly having a lunch break on the back of their truck, “Hey! Lemme get some help over here!”
The two of them looked their way, immediately jumping into action seeing the woman in pain.
One of them grabbed a folded up wheelchair from the back of their truck, running across the parking lot to their aid.
Just as they reached her side, she felt a warm liquid trail down her legs, “Oh shit. My water.” She looked down wide eyed at the wet seat of the Impala and then back up at the man helping her.
“You’re okay. Take deep breaths. What’s your relation?” He looked to Oscar, eyeing the Santos cross on the side of his neck.
“I’m her brother.” He looked the EMT up and down with a scowl.
“Right— we’ll just get her inside.” The EMT’s eyes widening, helping her get into the wheelchair with precise speed having been trained for this moment.
•••
“Oscar, the labor process can be hours long. You don’t have to stay— really.” She tried to reason with him, holding onto the side rail of the bed so hard she felt like she could break it.
Oscar shook his head bregudgingly, “I’ll be right here. I don’t know when— when Jose’s gonna show up. Until he does, I’ll be by your side.”
She let a single tear roll down her cheek, trying not to think of where her spouse was. She prayed to God he wasn’t in trouble and would contact them soon. Oscar noticed the way she grew quiet at the sound of his name, leaning over in his chair to hold her hand, placing his forehead against hers.
“You got this, hermana. Baby’s gonna be fine, Jose’s gonna be fine.” Oscar closed his eyes breathing in a deep breath as she cried for the first time that night. He didn’t know whether it was from the stress, from the nerves, or from his second-in-command and the father to his sister’s baby was not there.
As the minutes passed by, he’d began to feel guilty. Sad Eyes was doing a run for him in dangerous territory, alone. He hadn’t picked up his phone the first few times, no one was able to get a hold of him. What if he died because of him? Oscar would never let that guilt go, praying to God he was okay.
•••
An excruciating 7 hours later, she was fully dilated and ready to push this baby out into the world.
“Ms. Diaz, your doctor is here. We’re ready to push, sweetheart.” An older nurse walked into the room, smiling sweetly at the younger girl.
She looked to her brother who nodded his head encouragingly and then back at the nurse, “Okay. I’m ready.”
“Dad, will you be staying for the birth?”
“I’m her brother,” Oscar comments as politely as he could without glaring at the nurse who hadn’t known any better, “I’ll be right next to her.” He looks at his sister who had a somber smile on her face at his comment.
The nurses assigned to her worked around the two of them to assist the doctor, putting out any other equipment that they may have needed.
Oscar’s phone rung for a split second, sending a wave of hope through her body as she looked over to him with wide eyes. He looked at the caller ID, Cesar’s name showing up.
“Cesar— you hear anythin’?” He spoke into the phone just as the doctor came in.
“No. Nothing yet. Is she okay?”
“Yeah, yeah, she’s fine. She’s about to have the baby.” Oscar looked at the doctor who was saying something to his sister as she nodded her head agreeing with what was being said.
“Oscar— hello? You’re breaking up—“ Cesar’s voice cutting in and out of the receiver making Oscar hang up all together out of frustration.
“Okay, let’s get this baby out. The sex of the baby is still a surprise right?” The doctor asked, placing herself between her legs.
“Yes, it is.” She whispered, grinning slightly at her OB. Oscar stayed near her head, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead and moving some of her hair out of the way with his thumb.
“I’m scared, Oscar, I’m so fucking scared.” She whispered, eyes closing as the doctor told her what to do in order to make her feel more comfortable.
“You’re gonna be okay. We’re gonna do this together, alright?” Oscar took her trembling hand in his larger one, letting her squeeze it as hard as she needed to.
“When you feel a contraction coming, start pushing.” One of the nurses educated her on what to do as she nodded her head.
“I feel ahh— I feel a contraction!” She yelled out, the doctor encouraging her to push. She grunted, giving one hard push before panting, breathing in through her nose and out through her mouth.
Oscar grimaced not being able to understand the pain of childbirth but sure as hell watching the pain on his sister’s face as she pushed his niece or nephew out.
The same nurse from earlier tilted her head to her chest from the other side of the bed not letting her lay flat, talking her through the process and whispering sweet words.
“Ahhhh!” She screamed louder than she intended to, giving it her all with another push as she squeezed her brother’s hand.
“Almost there, sweetie, you’re doing great— one final push. Big push, come on I know you can do it.” The doctor supported her as she was finally able to see the baby’s head come through.
“Come on— one more push.” Oscar smiled wide, looking from the doctor to his sister.
She breathed in through her nose just like those birthing technique books had taught her, pushing for the last time, body exhausted due to what she’d endured for the past few hours.
“It’s a boy!” A loud wail sounded throughout the room, the sound of her baby boy being born.
“I have a nephew. I’m so proud of you.” Oscar held her face between his hands kissing the top of her head over and over again.
“I have a baby boy. Oh my god.” She whispered, tears flooding her eyes.
“Congratulations. He’s precious!” The nurse next to her smiled at the sweet boy who was getting cleaned up with towels and fidgeting slightly in the little basin. She couldn’t wait to hold him.
“Let me the fuck in! That’s my wife in there!” An angry voice yelled outside of the delivery room, prompting Oscar to let go of his sister and check out what was happening.
“Jose?!” The words came tumbling out of her mouth before she could stop them, recognizing the sound of her fiancé’s voice just about anywhere.
“Ms. Diaz, we are gonna have you do skin to skin with your baby boy. Sit back for a moment—“ The nurse instructed her to lie back on the bed.
“Sir, we cannot have you yelling on this floor.” Another much calmer voice spoke to the mystery man.
“Spooky! Is she in there?! Is my baby in there?!” Jose questioned his leader as soon as he saw him. He had a cut above his eyebrow that was bleeding slightly and a bruise forming on his jawline as well as a few other bruises that crept down his neck.
“He’s the father.” Oscar glared at the person who’d told him to keep his voice down. He nodded his head towards the door, not letting anyone else interfere with him getting into the delivery room.
It was like everything was moving in slow motion, from their baby boy being placed on her chest to the moment their eyes met.
“Jose.” She gasped, eyes welling up with tears at the sight of her fiancé who looked like he was hurting more than her.
The room went silent, all eyes on the interaction that was happening before them and on the Santo who was covered in blood.
“Gracias a Dios.” Jose nearly fell to his knees at the bedside taking the hand that wasn’t holding their son and bringing her knuckles up to his lips.
“We have a son, Jose.” She smiled and laughed all at the same time, grasping onto his hand so tightly like he would disintegrate any minute.
“Te quiero siempre y para siempre.” Jose whispered as the older nurse who’d cared for her brought him a wipe for his face and he took it, grateful for her caring instincts.
“I’m gonna wash my hands, okay? And then I’m gonna hold our son.” He nodded, letting go of her hand to stand up and walk to the sink, scrubbing his hands clean and ridding himself of the soiled flannel shirt he had over his tank top.
“What happened? I was scared that you were—“ The words caught in her throat barely able to get them out.
“I’d never, ever leave you,” Jose kissed her lips for the first time that night making any and every worry she had melt away. “Don’t think like that, mi amor.”
“You’re right. I know you wouldn’t,” She wiped a tear from her cheek sniffling as she looked down at their son nestled against her chest. “He’s perfect like his daddy.”
Jose smiled, reaching a finger down for his baby boy to grasp, his tiny fingers wrapping around his daddy’s finger as a reflex.
“We’re gonna let you have some time. Let me know if you need anything or have any questions.” Her OB left them to their own accord, leaving a nurse behind in case they needed help.
“Dad, why don’t you have a seat. I’ll put the baby on your chest, how’s that sound?” The nurse smiled up at Jose, pulling the chair closer to the bed for him.
Their baby boy cooed and squirmed as he was removed off of his mother, carefully being placed onto Jose’s strong chest.
“Mi vida. Papi te ama por siempre.” He whispered while caressing his back softly as the baby relaxed in his arms.
“I’m so sorry that I couldn’t make it in time for the birth. I tried so hard. I really did, nena.” He sighed, watching her watch the two of them interact. He could tell she was upset over the fact that he wasn’t there to witness their baby being born. But he was thankful that she had Oscar there because he knew he’d never leave his sister all alone.
“It’s okay. None of that matters, my love. You’re here now and that’s all I ever need.”
“Damn, I can’t believe we have a baby boy. I really thought it was going to be a beautiful little girl. Shit— half the guys thought so too.” Jose thought back to the way the Santos would place bets on the baby’s gender, his fianceé being the one to collect nearly half of it since she’d been right all along.
“Mother’s instinct. I told you, baby.” She smiled, giggling at the way he rolled his eyes playfully.
“The next baby I put in you is gonna be a girl, mamas, I can tell you that much. Father’s instinct.” He joked back, chuckling at the way she blushed at his words.
“She just had a baby and you’re already talking about a second one, mano?” Oscar’s voice startling them both as he walked back into the room.
“Spooky, man, thank you. For everything. I owe you.”
“Nah— you don’t owe me nothin’. Don’t worry about it,” Oscar waved his statement away, “I do wanna hold my nephew though.” He smirked down at the sleeping baby in his brother-in-law’s arms.
“For sure, man.” Jose stood up slowly with the baby on his chest still, moving carefully as not to disturb his slumber.
She watched from the bed as her older brother held his nephew for the first time, “He likes you, Oscar.” She awed from her bed, eyes watering at the way her son immediately felt comfortable in her brother’s arms.
“He better. I kinda watched him come out of you.” Oscar joked making her roll her eyes at the statement.
She watched on as her brother bounced in place with the baby, “You’re gonna be an amazing father one day, Oscar. I know God has big plans for you. I just know it.” She smiled at him.
“Mother’s instinct?” He said with a shaky voice, tears welling up in his eyes for the first time since the baby had been born.
“Yeah, something like that.” She shook her head, giggling at the ongoing joke that she’d probably never hear the end of.
•••
“Cesar, support the neck, mano.” Oscar instructed his brother softly over his shoulder making sure he didn’t drop their nephew the first time holding him.
“Like this?” Cesar put a palm under his neck making the baby grin, “Look! He’s smiling at me. We’re gonna be best friends.” He spoke to the little boy in his arms.
It was their first day home from the hospital and they were a little bit nervous if they were being honest.
“He’s so cute. Like a little chicken nugget. Could just eat him up.” Jamal cooed at the baby from next to Cesar.
Oscar glared at him as he spoke, making him shut up immediately. Her son had become a superstar the moment they got home, everyone wanting to see him and hold him all at once.
“Yo, can you look after him for a second? I gotta talk to her—“ Jose’s hushed tone made Oscar turn his head towards him.
“Go ahead, I got him.” Oscar made sure the baby was safe, shooing his compa away.
“Nena, come ‘ere.” Jose grabbed her hand in his, pulling her down the hall of the Diaz residence to her room.
“What’s wrong?” She questioned him, eyebrows furrowing in concern as he sat on the edge of her bed pulling her between his legs.
“I just wanna talk, me and you. I wanna apologize about the other night. I know, and you don’t have to deny it, that it broke your heart when I wasn’t there by your side for the birth of our son. I would do anything to go back to that moment and do it over again.” He breathed out, his thumb rubbing the back of her knuckles softly, specifically the spot where the beautiful diamond engagement ring rested on her finger.
She stared at him, eyes focusing on the cut above his brow and the bruise on his handsome jawline, rubbing her thumb across his cheekbone softly before speaking again.
“Jose, I already told you, it doesn’t matter. You can’t change the past so let’s look forward to the future. You can be there for the next one. And the one after that. And then the one after that—“ She giggled at the way his expression changed, squeezing her hip telling her to slow it down.
“I love you. Por siempre. I wouldn’t want to do this with anyone else.” He reached an arm up behind her neck to bring her lips to his as she moved to straddle his waist, resting her head against his chest hearing his heartbeat under her palm.
“I love you.” She closed her eyes, reveling in the way his heart pounded faster in his chest at her confession.
“Y’know Oscar’s really good with baby boy. He’s like— a nanny or something in another life.” Jose couldn’t help but confess, chuckling slightly.
She laughed loudly at the statement, bracing herself on his shoulders, “Honestly, if he can put our son to sleep on nights that we need breaks, he can be whoever he wants to be.”
On Your Six, Chapter 3
Day 3: Parenting for @taiqrowweek
Rating: T for this chapter, M for overall
Words: 5k
Summary: Qrow was what most of society would call a small-town criminal. But to those oppressed, he hoped only to be a healer. In an effort to make a change in the world, he moves from kingdom to kingdom, searching for branded omegas in need. His goal? To turn the derogatory words the reformatories forced them to bear on their skin into works of art.
Then one day, his past catches up to him in the form of Taiyang, his former best friend, with a brand of his own stained onto his skin and a plea for help in his eyes. Qrow has no choice but to answer, even if it means he’d have to face his mistakes once and for all.
[An ABO-style universe in a modern-day style Remnant. No Grimm, because people are the real monsters in this one]
Ao3 Link: On Your Mind
~
Early on in his career, Qrow had come to value the strength in listening.
He knew for every omega who walked through his door, he was a step in their healing process. It didn’t matter at what point in that process he was treading into; everyone came needing something. A sense of control. A desire to feel beautiful again. A need to shake off shame. No matter what it was, every reason was understandable and downright defensible.
But he knew his deed didn’t always end at the tip of a needle. Sometimes it wasn’t what was on their skin, but what was in their minds that weighed the most. Those were his talkers. The ones who felt so hurt or overcome by what had happened to them, they had to tell their story to someone.
So Qrow listened. He listened to the Mistrialian baker who tried to escape his abusive relationship by drugging his alpha one night and escaping into the night as the word Disloyal was overwrote. Erased Rebel as he was enraptured by the Rights Activist from Mantle who handed out self-funded newspapers all dedicated to lining out the inequalities among the dynamics. Nearly cried with the elderly Valian spinster who had been trafficked from her home in Vacuo decades ago to became the fourth wife of a rich proprietor as he made sure Owned could never be seen again.
Now today, he was turning the word SLUT into art as Tai recounted the love story that dared him to engage in one of society’s most taboo acts.
“So there I was, dragging my feet out of the ER at 2 AM, feeling like the worst parent in history as Yang bawls in my arms. I was so distressed, I couldn’t even remember where I’d parked and just started going through the rows.” They were sitting today. Tai cross-legged on his bed and staring out the window while Qrow sat behind him. “That’s when Summer called to me. She remembered I was one of the patients just going in as she got off her shift. She asked me what was going on and I told her how the doctor who’d seen us kicked me out for wasting his time over some diaper rash. And you know what she did?” A smile uplifted his tone. “She looked between me and Yang and said, ‘No parent spends five hours in the ER over nothing.’ Then she took my arm and led me back inside. Snapped at the staff to give her a room and saw to Yang herself. I couldn’t believe it. She’d just come off of a twelve-hour shift. She had to of been exhausted. But that was the kind of woman she was. When she saw someone who needed help, she put everything else aside to do it.”
A hiss breathed through the other’s teeth as Qrow lined over the base of the T, tailing the ends to look more like the trunk of a tree. “Were you right?” He prompted, hoping to distract him.
“Yeah. Yeast infection.” Tai puffed up proudly. “Nothing a bit of prescription cream and some TLC couldn’t fix, but it still felt so validating to be told my worries weren’t just in my head. It was the first time since Raven left that I felt I really could do this on my own.” That uplift was back, overlayed with fondness. “But, it was Summer who reminded me that just because I can, doesn’t mean I had to.”
He moved his pen higher, maple leaves beginning to bloom along his back. “How’d it happen?”
“Well, so, they called me in a few days after that night for a check-up. When I got there, I found out Summer had arranged things to make sure she was the doctor attending us. She had told me at the time it was just normal for her to touch base with anyone who came through ER that she had looked after. That it made her happy to see her patients doing well.” He barked out a laugh. “She was such a liar! She didn’t tell me this until later, but apparently the only reason she did it was because she thought I was cute and wanted to see me again.”
Tch, what a brat. Qrow scoffed, doggedly ignoring the had he been in her position, he absolutely would have done the same.
“We started talking and joking around. One thing led to another and suddenly she was asking me out for coffee! I was so shocked I almost fell out of my chair. But… I said yes. And, it was the best decision of my life.”
He couldn’t do this. He jerked back and turned off the pen before the shaking in his hand ruined his work. “Sorry. Hand’s cramping up. Can we take a break?”
Oblivious as ever, the omega gave him one of those stupidly bright smiles that he hated because it made his heart do weird things. “Sure.” As they slid off the bed and Tai took the opportunity to stretch, he asked, “How about tea?”
“Yeah, I’ll go put on the pot.” Qrow didn’t even get two steps before a hand clapped down on his shoulder.
“Nope. You’re resting.”
“But-”
“Relax. I got this.”
Then Tai wandered right into his kitchen like he owned the place, leaving him with no choice but to throw up his arms and take a seat. Qrow watched him go through the motions, turning to fill the kettle. From this distance, the word that had once been etched into his skin was completely unreadable, overtaken by a mismatch of new marks in various states of healing.
A perfect reflection of the man who bore them.
Regret dropped like a stone in his stomach, feeling sick as the omega took care of him over a lie. He lowered his head and took his punishment in the form of a simple question, “So when did you two get serious?”
“Hm? Oh, you mean Sums and I?”
“No, I meant you and me.” Qrow snarked, because he hated himself.
Tai set the pot on the stove, the burner sparking to life. “I knew we had a forever connection the day you offered to eat all the yellow Starburst from the bag and leave all the good flavors for me.”
Well now he was resentful and insulted. “Yellow is the good flavor.”
“Mmhmm, keep telling yourself that.” He started tearing open a pair of tea packets, dropping one each in the mugs. “Anyways, promise not to judge me too much?”
“For what, your love life or your weird issues with Starburst?”
“Qrow!”
He held up hand as a peace offering, leaning back. “Okay, okay. I promise.”
Tai eyed him suspiciously for several seconds before finally saying, “We bonded four months in.”
“FOU-” He cut himself off and took a breath. He seemed to have to do this a lot more lately. “I mean, that’s not so bad.”
“Good save.” Sarcasm dripped from his tone. “Look, I thought I was going too fast too. But when I would sit down and think of my future, I just could see her in it. Summer was a piece of me I didn’t even know I was missing. And when I found out she felt the same about me we decided, fuck it! Who cares about what everyone else is going to say? We knew we wanted each other.”
On display as he was, Qrow’s gaze fell to the spot on Tai’s neck where the two scars lay. The imperfect ovals were layered atop one another right in the juncture of his shoulder and collarbone, cutting through his scent gland. Similar to a snake’s fangs, alpha incisors had a hollow part, allowing them to release a bit of their musk during the bite which would then inject itself into an omega’s glands and permanently alter their scent.
Staking a claim.
Granted, with the tattoo he couldn’t smell even a hint of either Raven or Summer any longer. But back then, he could imagine how pungent it had been. Even if the new smell wasn’t a dead giveaway, the pinker shade of the fresher one was a big neon sign that drew the eye. There wouldn’t be any hiding it, even if the couple had tried.
Which meant they absolutely became the gossip of every corner on the street. Summer being well off and Tai being abandoned and annulled didn’t help matters in the slightest. He already knew what people would have thought, well before the brand was ever made.
He frowned. “Even knowing you’d get the worst of it?”
“Tch. Tell me something else that’s new.” Tai snipped, rolling his eyes. “You know, I could have been a perfect little omega. Quiet. Thoughtless. Unopinionated. Or I could have also spent the rest of my life as a part of the Single’s Forever Club. Risen Yang alone and never looked at another Alpha again. And you know what? People would still have shit to say about me. That’s what happens when society’s rigged against you.” He smacked his hand down on the counter. “When does my happiness matter?”
That stone still in his stomach was only getting heavier. “Sorry.”
The fire burnt out as quickly as it was there, and Tai only shook his head, mumbling, “Forget it. It’s whatever right?”
“It’s not. It’s fucking wrong.” He said with more fury than he meant to.
Tai’s smile was tired and defeated. “If only more people thought like you.”
The kettle whistle blew, effectively ending their conversation. It wasn’t long before Tai was taking his seat across from him, their mugs steaming on the table before them. Idly, Qrow traced the rim of his with his index finger, trying to think of something to say.
His focus shifted when a hand was suddenly being held out before him, clearly asking for something. “Uh?”
“Give me your hand.” Tai demanded.
His brain moved sluggishly, but when he understood what the other was offering, his face went redder than his eyes. “I, uh, need to drink my tea?”
“You’ve got a left one for that. Come on already.”
“It’s fine. It’s not that-” Any argument he had slipped away when he tried pulling his hand further away, only for the omega to reach over and snag it.
The simple touch was like electricity zinging through his muscles, leaving him helpless to resist as Tai laid his arm across the table. “You’re such a big baby.” He teased as he rolled up the cuff of Qrow’s shirt, pressing the pads of his fingers along the length of his forearm.
When the massage started, Qrow absolutely melted. While he hadn’t been entirely honest, it would still be true to say that he was probably working his way into an early case of carpal tunnel with how much tension built from his shoulder down to his wrist during his work. He sighed, slumping over the table as the other made his way up past his elbow. “I hate you.” He mumbled, face pillowed in his other arm.
“Yeah, I’m the worst.” Tai replied cheerily.
Gods, if only that were true, then maybe he wouldn’t love him as much as he did.
~
“I wish you could have met her.” Tai told him a little after sundown.
Qrow hummed questioningly, not pulling his eyes up from the midribs he was painstakingly adding onto every leaf. He felt like he was performing some sort of a balancing act, sitting on the edge of the recliner so he was close enough to draw while also trying to keep out of the beam of his scroll light pointed at them from his nightstand, since the weak 40 watt overhead just wasn’t bright enough to work with. There was a reason he never tattooed after dark.
“Summer.” Tai clarified, reminding him exactly why they were an hour behind. “You woulda liked her.”
He almost laughed at how inane that statement was. “Doubt that.”
“Really! She was sweet and a little shy. A bit of a rebel too. And I mean, she moved to Vale ‘cause she knew she could help more people in need for cheaper than the high end hospitals she could have worked in would charge.” He glanced over his shoulder as Qrow re-inked. “You gotta let that Atlesian stigma go, man.”
There really was no good way to answer that, so he didn’t bother trying. Gods only knew what Tai would have thought of him, if he found out the real reason they never would of gotten along was because Qrow didn’t believe he’d be able to resist his instincts a second time around. The ones that screamed at him to show Tai he was the more worthwhile mate, even if that meant delving things into a fistfight.
“I guess it doesn’t matter now.” The omega said when he caught on that he wasn’t going to get a response. “At least you’ll have a chance to meet Ruby. I warn you though, you’re totally going to fall in love. She’s got so much energy to her, like you wouldn’t believe. She giggles so much too, it’s the cutest little sound. And-! And…”
Pausing, Qrow flipped off the pen. “Tai?”
“S-Sorry.” He rubbed a hand over his face, clearing his throat loudly. “It just, hurts. Not knowing how they’re doing.” His voice broke. “I miss them.”
Not sure what else to do, he silently pressed his forehead against the base of Tai’s neck, mindful of his back as he wound an arm across his middle in a loose hug.
Knew, without a doubt, that it wasn’t nearly enough.
~
A year ago, when Qrow was working outside of Mantle for a spell, a client he’d never forget walked through his door. He was unusually broad-shouldered and buff, just like Tai. Yet, it wasn’t his physical attributes that truly made him stand out. It was the omega’s confidence.  He had a stride to him that exuded self-assurance and a stance that yielded pride.
It threw him completely off his game, as he was used to playing the role of consoler. Yet, as the omega held out his hand to shake, Qrow found himself wanting to compete against him. “You’re Harbinger. It’s a pleasure. I’ve heard a lot.”
“Only good things, I hope.” He replied, his grip firm and unyielding. “And you are?”
“Clover Ebi.” That name rang a bell, but he couldn’t place why. “And they were. You did a rebrand for a buddy of mine who lives over in the orange district. I was hoping you could do the same for mine.”
That brought some air to his sails as he found himself on more comfortable ground. “Yeah, ‘course I can. Why don’t you take a seat and I can get a gander at what I’m working with?”
“That’s the thing…” For the first time since he walked in, some of that boldness faltered. “If I show you, I need you to promise me not to freak out.”
Well, now he was really intrigued. “Come on. It can’t be that bad. Wait – it’s not on like, your ass cheek or something right?”
“You’re as crude as Robyn warned me you’d be.”
Qrow perked up at the name, remembering her as the outspoken journalist he’d looked after during his first stint in Mantle.
Clover placed a hand over his left bicep. “No, no, it’s nothing like that. It’s under this.”
“Okay then, what’s the proble- Oh, shit.”
His heart rate jumped from resting to cardiac arrest in record time at the sight of the brand – not a harsh word like so many others had been forced to bear, but a simple, cursive script of the man’s own last name. The mark of someone who was in service of the Atlas military.
Which meant he was probably being set up right now.
“Fuck!” Qrow stumbled backwards, looking around wildly for a weapon. An exit. Anything.
“Hey, it’s okay!” Clover followed after him, albeit at a slower pace. “Come on, you said you wouldn’t freak out.”
He picked up an umbrella, holding it en garde like his sister used to with her katana. “We’re way past that, buddy. So, what is this? A trap? Are a bunch more of you about to bust through my wall to take me in?”
“Don’t be ridiculous. Will you just – put the umbrella down!”
He came within striking distance – so Qrow struck. A fast swipe at his face.
Clover didn’t even look as his hand shot up to catch it. With strength he wasn’t even trying to hide, he yanked the makeshift weapon right out of Qrow’s grip and tossed it over his shoulder. He caught the fist that came next, boxing him into the corner so that he didn’t have room to move. It was an oddly uncomfortable feeling, being pinned down and powerless.
But while the hold was solid it wasn’t tight, nor was Clover’s face aggressive. “Can you calm down, please? I didn’t come here to turn you in. I came here because I want your help.”
“Why?” He barked back. “You chose to take that mark. Feeling regretful now soldier boy?”
The omega’s expression shifted darkly. “The only thing I chose was to fight for my kingdom, because I believe in protecting the people. This mark is something I have to bear, if I want to pursue that goal.”
His hands slid off, giving Qrow some breathing space. As he stared at the other, suddenly it came to him. “Wait. Ebi. I knew I recognized your name. You made headlines recently. You’re the captain of Tin Jimmy’s specialty squad.”
It had been a huge sensation, an omega taking a leadership position like that. It was practically unheard of and people talked it up like it was a sign of the ‘changing times.’ But he had brushed it off as another one of the kingdom’s typical publicity stunts. They always had something or the other going on to turn the people’s heads – because if everyone was looking at Atlas, no one would see anything else.
“I don’t get it. Why?” His brow furrowed, trying to make sense of it.
“Because I represent something larger than just a captain of a team. I represent hope. The worst thing for us is when no one’s talking. And I sure got them talking.”
That made sense. Nothing changed if no one was having the conversation. Still… “Rebranding could get you decommissioned. Negative PR be damned.”
“Well, as they say: Sometimes you got to risk it all for a dream.” Clover said with a quirk of his lips. “So, will you help me?”
It was one of the most needlessly reckless decisions he had ever made, but he did. In two, relatively short sessions, they were done. He slept with one eye open every day in-between, but when they finished and Clover was instead urging him to keep his contact info (“Just in case you ever get in trouble.”), Qrow felt oddly at ease. Like maybe he truly did make a friend in all this.
He never questioned why the case never hit the news – but if he left Mantle a little quicker than normal, well, that was his business.
Now, as he hit dial on that old contact, he could only pray Clover at least was going to keep this part of his word.
He picked up after the second ring. “Hello?”
“Hey soldier boy.” Qrow started, trying to sound casual. “It’s Harbinger.”
A beat. Then, “Oh. Oh! Uh, two seconds okay?” There was a muffled bit of a noise and a faint, “I’ll be right back. Gotta take this.” A bit more shuffling and background noise as Qrow assumed he left the room, then Clover’s voice was back in his ear, surprisingly frantic. “What’s going on? Are you alright?”
“Yeah. Sorry, it’s not an emergency call.” He replied.
The omega let out a sigh of relief. It felt oddly nice to be worried about. “Oh thank Gods. So then, what’s up?”
“I was hoping you might be able to help me with something.” Qrow said, unconsciously pacing around his box-in-the-wall apartment. “Might be a longshot but, you got any connection with OPS?”
The OPS, or Omega Protection Services, were a kingdom-to-kingdom association that talked big about how they were dedicated to the proper care of the omega brethren in need. While in some veins of their work that was true, like funding lobbies for better rights in the system or providing financial support to those in trouble, it was equally true that under the table the organizations were fed big money from the reformatories to turn over a revolving door of clientele.
The biggest contributor of which was the Crisis Department. It was no secret that a death of a bond mate was devastating to an omega and there was a small percentage of those who became non-functional after the loss. Therefore, any omega known to have recently lost their mate was visited by an OPS agent. If the agent found the omega to be in such an extreme state, it was customary that the widow would be sent away for rehabilitation and any children would be rehomed either with known family or into a foster family until the parent was well enough to care for them again.
The key words being a small percentage. However, according to statistics, almost a quarter of all widowed omegas were in need of ‘reformation’. A percentage that went up or down depending on what kingdom was involved. Vale, their home country, was the only one underperforming on those numbers. By all accounts, Tai never should have gone to a reformatory at all.
The issue was the OPS agent assigned to the omega was from their alpha’s home kingdom. Which meant the agent that knocked on Tai’s door was from Atlas, the kingdom boosting the highest reformatory count by almost double any other one. They also had one of the strictest policies on how they rehomed children. Rather than even consider familial connections, they fostered all of them, claiming it would provide a more stable environment without the potential of an omega in probation from seeking them out and ‘influencing’ their young one’s minds before they were fully well.
All this to say it was almost impossible to know where Tai’s kids were unless he could talk to someone on the inside.
“I know someone who works out of there.” Clover said, before prying almost teasingly. “Why? Who are you looking for?”
Qrow realized too late that he probably should have expected this. “Don’t get any ideas!” He squawked. “I’m… trying to get some info on my niece. Nieces, actually. Just wanting to make sure they’re doing alright.”
“Oh.” Just like that, Clover was all business again. “Yeah, I can swing that. Just gonna need their names and ages, but it shouldn’t be too hard to find them. The names of their sires helps too.”
A sense of relief spread through him. “Yeah I can get that to you. I’ll message it.”
“Perfect! Should have something for you in a few days, okay?”
“Thank you Clover.”
“Anytime.”
It was only after the call ended and he’d written out the requested information, that it hit Qrow.
If he disclosed all this, it really wouldn’t be much further of a stretch for Clover to locate his own information alongside it. All these years on the lam potentially wasted in one single text message.
He flopped onto his bed with a groan, mussing a hand through his hair as the weight of the decision nettled him. Yet, as his thumb moved over to erase everything, his gaze unconsciously fell to his nightstand, where the pages of Tai’s designs were still resting. Thought of all the pain his friend still had to go to finish them, coupled with all he bore before this. Wouldn’t just a day of solace be worth it?
His thumb moved back up.
Sometimes you just had to risk it all, right?
Qrow hit send.
~
Tai smelt his anxiety the moment he walked through the door.
“Everything alright?” He asked, looking about the room as if he expected to find a portion of it on fire.
“Yeah, yeah.” Qrow assured, doing a very bad job of actually appearing alright as he fidgeted with his necklace. “I just have something I wanted to show you. Come here.”
“O…kay?”
Tai followed him over to his bed, sitting down beside him. It was more comfortable than the stiff plastic of the mismatched dining chairs at least, but now Qrow was also realizing it was painfully intimate. As he sat there, fighting the urge to just shove his scroll into the other hands, he realized maybe he should have planned this better. “So, I know this guy from Atlas, right? Someone on the higher end who has a lot of connections. And well, I asked if he might be able to check in on your daughters.”
“What?!” The omega gripped onto his arm, a sort of manic desperation dancing in his eyes. “Qrow, are you serious?”
He nodded, plucking his scroll off the nightstand and swiping over to his photo album. “Yeah and he was able to get me this from their file.” He handed the device over, seeing the way Tai eyes went wide. The photo was reportedly back from January, taken on some sort of outing the family had been on. The two girls were sitting in a sandbox, Yang pushing sand into a yellow bucket with her hands while Ruby watched her, biting on the end of the shovel that her sister probably should have been using.
“They’re with a beta family. An older couple whose kids have already left the house.” Qrow rambled as his friend just continued to stare at his children. “It’s a real nice place. Both the girls have their own rooms and there’s a backyard for them and everything. And the expense reports are showing their getting a nice, balanced diet and toys and even some learning, uh, things. Books and flashcards and all that fancy shit. And, well, uh – T-Tai?”
Tears dripped from the man’s chin, hitting the display of the scroll. “Yang’s in pigtails.”
“What?”
Tai lifted his head, eyes swimming. “I couldn’t get her to let me brush her hair most days, let alone put it in pigtails.”
“Tai…”
The omega brought the device to his chest, as if it was a suitable replacement for the children he’d rather hug. “And look at how big Ruby is now. She’s sitting up all on her own now. Probably walking.” He sobbed, a wretched, terrible noise that burst from something aching to his very core. “What else have I missed? Ruby has to be talking now. I didn’t even get to hear her first word. And Yang’s old enough to be in kindergarten – I should have been there to take her to her first day. But I wasn’t! I wasn’t there for any of it!”
Something in Qrow’s own heart shattered listening to the father’s anguish and he surged forward, gathering Tai up. Pulled him into a tight embrace as if it could protect him from all the hurt he had to bear.
“It’s not fair.” Tai cried into his shoulder. “It was awful enough, losing Summer. But then those OPS bastards came into my house, took one look at my marks and said I was unfit to raise my own kids! I felt so humiliated.” He clenched onto fistfuls of Qrow’s shirt, shaking hard enough he might just fall apart. “It’ll be almost two years by the time they give them back to me. They took those years away from me and I’m never getting them back!” He heaved over another sob. “What if they don’t even remember me Qrow?”
He ran his fingers soothingly through the other’s hair. “No one could forget you Tai. Not with that big, stupid, sunny smile a’yours. Those girls’ll take one look at it and go ‘there’s daddy!’. I just know it.”
It earned him a watery laugh that only delved into more tears. If he could have, Qrow would have torn up all of Atlas to find those pups and bring them back to Tai right then and there. As it was, there was little else he could do but hold him through it.
When the cries eventually turned to sniffles, Tai pulled away to wipe at his face. He looked a mess, eyes bloodshot and blotchy and red. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to lose it on you like that.”
“Think I should be the one saying sorry.” He cast a guilty glance to his scroll, which had fallen onto the bed at some point. “I just thought – I don’t know what I thought. Maybe I wasn’t.”
“Oh, no! Qrow.” Tai pat his knee reassuringly. “I can’t even begin to tell you how much it means to me to see them. To know you did all this for me.” He cast his gaze away, sighing. “It’s just, some days I feel like I’m drowning. There’s not a day that goes by I don’t think of my girls. Worry about them. But if I’m too emotional, suddenly I’m ‘too unstable’. So, I’ve been trying so hard to hold it together.”
Qrow’s jaw clenched. Becoming a professional arsonist was sounding better and better every day. “You don’t have to, not with me.”
“Heh. Even if I cry every day?”
“Cry every hour, if you need to.” He made an aborted gesture towards Tai’s hand. Touched his forearm instead. “Whatever you need, I’m here for you. Alright?”
Tai had no such inhibitions, his other hand laying down over Qrow’s, squeezing gently. “Thank you. I know I haven’t said it nearly enough, but I really do appreciate everything you’ve done. I don’t know how I would have gotten through these past few weeks without you.”
“You would have.” He said, doubtless. Tai was strong inside and out. He’d always admired that about him. “But, I’m glad I can help.”
Anything was worth bringing that smile to his face.
As if on cue, one stretched across Tai’s lips as he said, “I’ll pay you back one day, promise.”
One day, maybe Qrow would tell him he already had.
You're Gonna Be a Papa - Life in the ER Series
There were a few requests to see Mack’s birth story. Here you go.
Warnings: hospital visit and swearing
November 6, 2020
His cell phone laid on the table, where he had dropped it moments before. A smirk crossed his face as he processed the information he just received. Looking at the clock, he knew his husband would be walking through the door at any moment. Truth be told, he couldn’t wait to see the look on Race’s face when he told him.
They had been married almost 10 months but they had known they wanted this for the last 6 years, since they started dating. Their life together had been slowly growing - his home becoming theirs as soon as Race moved in, the intertwining hours spent together between their crazy jobs - his as an ER nurse and Race’s as a physical education teacher - somehow they managed to make it work.
The slamming of the backdoor pulled him out of his thoughts as he heard Sassie’s bark and her nails clicking against the hardwood floors as she ran to greet his husband. “Spottie, you here?”
Spot rolled his eyes, knowing full well his navy blue 4Runner was in the driveway. “Yeah, Racer. How was your day?”
“Good. Kids were way too excited for the weekend. Made it hard to actually teach today.” Race slung his bag on the bench they had in the entryway.
Spot grinned as Race walked into the kitchen, grabbing a glass from the cupboard before filling it up with water. He propped his hip against the countertop as he looked at his husband. “What did you do today? You had the day off right?”
“Yeah. Sassie and I slept in before I took her for a run through town. We met Albert, Rex and Romeo for lunch and a bit of doggy playground before coming back here and cleaning off the DVR.” Spot grinned. “Overall a productive day. But listen, you might want to go get changed - we have somewhere we have to go.”
Race groaned, finishing off his water, putting the glass in the sink. “Ugh, really? I was looking forward to sitting on the couch, watching shit TV while we ate pizza.”
“Yes, really. Now go get changed.” Spot grinned, giving him a look.
Race looked at him, dressed in sweats and a hoodie. “Is that what you’re wearing? Where are we going?”
“Yes, that’s what I’m wearing. I’ll tell you along the way. Now go get changed.” Spot gave him a look, shoving his feet into his shoes, grabbing the packed bag before walking out the backdoor to the car.
Opening the backseat, he grinned seeing the newly installed car seat. They had just gotten it installed last weekend so Spot had been driving around with it in the backseat, just in case. Throwing the bag into the backseat, he closed the door, just as Race walked out. “Do I need anything else?”
“It’s all in the car. Let’s go, snookums.” Spot got into the driver’s side, shutting the door as Race joined him.
As soon as his door closed, Race looked at Spot with an eyebrow raised. “Now can I know?”
“We’re heading to the hospital.” Spot smiled. “Our baby is on its way and we’re going to meet them.”
Tears instantly clouded Race’s eyes as he heard Spot. “Shit, really?”
“Yes, shit really.” A watery laugh came from Spot’s mouth as tears clouded his eyes. “You’re gonna be a papa, Tony.”
Race reached out and wiped his eyes. “When did you find out?”
“I literally got the call just before you came into the house.” Spot chuckled. “Amanda was admitted about two hours ago. She still has a while to go but they said we might want to come up to the hospital to wait.”
Sighing, Race shook his head as he leaned over and kissed Spot. “We’ve been waiting so long for this. We’re going to be daddies, Spottie.”
“Yes, yes we are.” Spot kissed him back, as they both tried to get their emotions under control. “You ready?”
Race stole another kiss before nodding. “With you by my side, always.”
The drive to the hospital was quick, each man lost in their own words. Pulling into a parking spot, he threw the car into park before grabbing the bag from the backseat. “Come on, we’re going to go through the ER - Kat’s working today.”
Race followed behind Spot, unfamiliar with the twists and turns of the hospital. Race knew a bit about the hospital, on account of the times he ended up there, but he was completely lost in that moment and was perfectly fine following Spot.
“Spot, thought you had the day off?” Maddie grinned at him as he stepped up to the nurse’s station.
Spot chuckled. “I do but I’m looking for Plums - she around?”
“I think she just went down to grab something from the cafeteria.” Maddie told them. “Do you want me to let her know that you’re here?”
Spot looked at Race who shrugged. “Nah, we’ll head down there. Thanks Maddie.”
Spot turned on his heels, grabbing Race’s hand before they walked down a long hallway. “You okay, Racer?”
“Yea but I could ask you the same question, Spottie.” Race raised an eyebrow in his husband’s direction.
Spot pulled him so they were flushed with the wall. “Nervous, excited, worried, but I’m glad you’re by my side for this. I wouldn’t want to do this with anyone else.”
Race kissed him quickly, squeezing their linked hands. “Good and I’m all of those as well. Now let’s go find Kat, then we can go upstairs.”
Spot nodded, tugging on his hand as they continued down the hallway, eventually walking into the cafe. Scanning the cafe, Spot’s mouth tugged up in a smile when he spotted her sitting by herself. Spot bounced over to where she was sitting, quickly sitting in a chair as she looked up from her phone. “Spot? What are you doing here, you’ve got the day off.”
“We got a call about Amanda going into labor.” He grinned as Race joined them at the table.
A small squeal escaped Kat’s mouth as she looked between the two. “Serious?”
“Like I’d be here if I didn’t have to be.” Spot rolled his eyes. “How much longer are you working?”
Kat grinned. “I’m so excited for you two. This is a great day. I’m working until 5 but I’ll be up afterwards. Have you let the family know?”
“Not yet. We were going to go up there and see the progress before we let everyone know. I just had to tell you because I knew you’d kill us if we were here and you didn’t know.” Spot grinned at her as she blew him a kiss.
“You’re damn right I would kill you both.” She grinned, standing up, gathering her stuff. “Come on, you two go upstairs and let me know what the progress is.”
She gave them both hugs and a kiss on the cheek as they went their separate ways. The two headed upstairs, checking in with the nurse before finding the waiting room. Taking the bag off his shoulder, Spot collapsed into a chair, sighing as Race did the same.
“What are you thinking about?” Race asked, looking over at Spot while lacing their hands together.
Spot smiled. “Thinking about the names we picked and if they’re going to be strong enough for our daughter or son.”
“Those aren’t locked in stone - we still have time to change them.” Race squeezed their hands. “We can go with other names if you want.”
Shrugging, Spot bit his lip. “We’ll wait until we see them then decide. I never knew how big of a responsibility it was to name someone. That’s the name they’re going to have for the rest of their lives.”
“It’s monumental when you stop and look at it. But whatever name we give them, they’re going to grow into it and make it their own.” Race smirked. “And any child of ours will be alright with whatever name we give them.”
The opening of the door caught their attention as a nurse came in and headed towards them. “Spot, it’s good to see you. I heard you were waiting in here.”
“Hi Kristie. It’s good to see you. This is my husband Tony.” Spot introduced, looking over at Race. “Kristie has been trying to convince me for years to come up to labor and delivery instead of the ER.”
Kristie smiled at the two of them. “A valiant effort but I’ve failed every time. But I wanted to come give you guys an update. Amanda is getting ready to start pushing so we will have a baby party soon, so if you want anyone up here, I’d give them a call.”
Nodding, Spot and Race grinned at one another. “Thank you Kristie. Will you let us know when the baby is here?”
“I will. Do you two need anything in the meantime?” She smiled at them.
Spot shook his head before looking at Race. “I think we’re all set at the moment, but thank you.”
She left the two of them, as Race over at Spot. “Should we give the family a call?”
“Do you want momma up here now or in a bit?” Spot raised an eyebrow at him. “I mean I’m all for having them up now but I’m leaving it up to you.”
Race chuckled. “That means if I say later, and momma finds out, she’ll kill me and not you.”
“Pretty much.” Spot giggled.
Race grabbed his phone, typing up a text message to Albert, Jack, Medda, and Smalls before pocketing the phone. “There, done.”
“You texted your family that our child is on their way.” Spot’s eyes were wide. “I’m not going to stand in momma’s way when she wants to kill you.”
Race grinned confidently. “She’s not going to kill me.”
“And you’re so sure about this, how?” Spot countered raising an eyebrow.
Smirking, Race raised an eyebrow in challenge. “Bet you $20 that she’s not going to kill me?”
“You’re on!” Spot held out his hand for Race to shake as the waiting room door opened, drawing their attention away from one another. “Jack! You got down here quickly.”
Jack hugged both of them with a smirk. “I might have gotten a text message from my wife who demanded I get my butt down here.”
“Where Addie?” Spot asked, noticing Jack was alone.
Joining them on the couch where they sat, Jack smiled. “Her grandparents are watching her for a bit. They were going to watch her tonight as Kat and I had a date night planned but they got Addie a bit earlier than planned.”
“I’m sure they loved that.” Race replied dryly, giving them a smirk.
Jack chuckled. “They do alright. Luckily, Kat’s sister Amelia is in town and staying with them so she is spending some quality time with her niece. Kat said she’ll be up soon - the ER just got hit with a couple of ambulances so once it calms down she’ll be up.”
Race pulled Jack into a conversation about something at school. Spot watched the two of them, both so animated in their conversation. Spot couldn’t believe he was in that room, waiting on the birth of their daughter or son. Race and him had had several conversations about what they wanted, Race desperately wanting a daughter where he was more nonchalant about what he wanted. He didn’t care, as long as they were healthy.
He was pulled from his thoughts as the door was slowly pushed open. He instinctively stood, anxiously waiting on news. He felt Race come up beside him, as they both looked towards the door.
Kristie stood in the doorway with a pink and blue striped bundle in her arms. “Alright daddies, who wants her?”
Race and Spot both looked at one another as Race stepped back. Kristie grinned at Spot, expertly handing over the bundle to his awaiting arms.
“Did you say it’s a girl?” Race asked, stepping up to Spot’s side to look at the baby.
Kristie at the smitten men. “Yes, a little girl. She was born at 4:37pm. She weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces and is 21 inches long. She has all ten fingers and toes.”
“She’s precious, Spottie.” Race reached around his husband to slip his finger in her hand. “Look at her long fingers.”
Spot adjusted her slightly in his arms, looking at Race. “She’s perfect, papa.”
“She is, dad.” Race cooed at her.
Kristie looked at the two of them. “Do you guys need anything?”
“I don’t think so. We’ll let you know when we’ve decided on a name.” Spot grinned at her as she nodded.
Race’s eyes went wide. “Shit, we’ve got to name her.”
Spot turned to face Race. “Do you want to hold her?”
Race looked at the ground, suddenly bashful. “I don’t want to drop her.”
“Sit down Race.” Spot nodded to the seat beside his brother. “You’ve held Addie; our baby is just a bit smaller than Addie.”
Waiting for Race to be settled, Spot handed him the baby girl as Race cradled her. “Breathe Racer. You’re not going to drop her.”
“She's our daughter, Spottie.” Race’s voice was full of awe and amazement.
Spot fell more in love with Race as he watched his normally rambunctious husband sit still and peacefully held their daughter.
“I thought you two had names picked out.” Jack smiled, breaking Spot out of the little bubble he had.
Spot nodded. “We do but we aren’t sure if those names will fit her personality.”
“She’s content to sleep at the moment.” Race grinned, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
Spot nodded. “So do we go with MJ or DA? Or do we go with something else?”
Race mouthed both names while looking at their daughter. “I think MJ will be a good name for her.”
“You sure?” Spot wanted to make sure. That was the name he suggested and he wanted to make sure Race was sure.
Race nodded. “Welcome to the world, Mackenzie Jayne Higgins-Conlon.”
Spot loved how the name flowed off Race’s tongue as he softly spoke it. Race looked up at his big brother. “Do you want to hold her, Jackie?”
Jack, who had suddenly become emotional at seeing the two become parents, could only nod. Race stood up, crossed the room and gently handed Mack over to her uncle.
“Oh little girl you’re precious.” Jack cooed, expertly cradling his new niece. “Hi Mack.” He looked between Spot and Race. “That is a nickname right?”
Spot chuckled. “That’s one of them. We were thinking of MJ and Kenzie as well. I’m sure she’ll have more as she grows.”
The door opened, grabbing Spot’s attention as he smiled at Kat. Her hand was over her mouth as she walked into the room. “The baby’s here?”
“She is.” Spot said, standing up, meeting her as she threw her arms around his shoulder, squeezing him in a hug. “Mackenzie Jayne.”
Pulling away, Kat wiped away her tears, looking over to where her husband sat with the baby in his arms. “Aww her name is perfect. Congratulations to you both.”
“Do you want to hold her?” Spot whispered, looking at his best friend.
She grinned before nodding. Spot left her side, walking to Jack to take Mack from his arms. Walking slowly over to Kat, he transferred his daughter to his best friend’s arms.
“Aww boys she’s precious.” Kat smiled, looking at the baby’s pouty lips. “When can you go home?”
Race shrugged. “Kristie hasn’t told us yet.”
“I’m guessing she’ll have to stay in the hospital tonight and part of the day tomorrow before she’s released to us.” Spot smiled. “You look good with a newborn in your arms, Kat.”
She immediately looked at Jack who had a wolfish look on his face. “Do not get any ideas, Jack Kelly. We have a four month old at home and we’re not ready for a second one. We have a new niece that we can love on.”
“Come on Kat.” Jack whined, grinning at his wife.
Shaking her head, she adjusted Mack in her arms. “No, Jackson.”
“Ha! She pulled out your full name.” Race laughed, as Jack shoved his shoulder in retaliation.
“Boys.” The sharp voice came from the doorway as the four of them looked up.
Medda, Smalls, Albert, and Finch all stood there grinning at them. “Don’t make me separate you. You may be grown adults but I’m still your momma.”
“Hi Momma.” Race and Jack grinned happily, getting up to greet their momma before Medda narrowed her eyes on the bundle in Kat’s arms.
“Momma, I’m a papa.” Race excitedly told her as she pulled him into a hug. “Kat’s hogging her but I’m sure if you ask her sweetly, she’ll give up your newest granddaughter.”
Medda looked over at Kat with a smile before looking at her youngest son, narrowing her eyes at him. “Kat is snuggling your adorable daughter at the moment, which is fine. I have an issue with the fact that I received a text message from you letting me know that your child was on the way.”
Race had the decency to look guilty. “I’m sorry momma.”
“Next time, I expect a phone call.” She gave him a look before looking over at Kat. “Now hand over that precious baby girl.”
Kat handed Mack over to her grandma before stepping back, watching Medda coo over the little girl. She felt Jack slip his hand into hers, giving it a squeeze.
Kat looked around the room, smiling at Albert and Finch, walking over to them. Albert gave her a side hug, grinning. “How was the ER today?”
“Just because you and the new papa over there had the day off, it was okay. I got slammed in the last hour of my shift.” Kat shook her head. “It’s like they know when shift change is happening.”
Albert chuckled. “Well some of them are frequent flyers so I wouldn’t be surprised if they did know the shift changes.”
“Too true.” Kat nodded. “Did you hear what they named her?”
Finch and Albert both shook their heads. “Mackenzie Jayne. I’ve heard both Mack and MJ thrown around as nicknames. Good luck getting her away from Medda - I don't think she’s going to give her up willingly.”
Her gaze landed on Spot and Race standing on either side of Medda, smiling at their daughter, sleeping soundly in her grandmother’s arms.
“Yeah we’re going to have to fight Medda for her.” Albert raised his voice, causing Medda to look up at him.
She narrowed her eyes in his direction. “If you want her, I’ll happily hand her over to you.”
Albert skipped across the room, stopping at Medda’s side. “Hand her over momma.” He adjusted Mack in his arms as his face softened. “Oh Mack, you’re a sweetheart. You’re so precious.”
“Who knew that Albert would become a softie mushball around an infant?” Jack asked, not so quietly.
Albert looked up at him with eyes wide. “You’re one to talk, Kelly. You were a pile of mush when you first met Addie. Big, tough Jack Kelly, cooing to a baby, just like that from zero to 100.”
Spot came over to where she was standing and grinned at her. “Who knew a new baby girl would make the men turn to cooing softies?”
“I did. You all did it when Addie was born and I knew it was going to happen again, regardless of whether you baby was a boy or a girl.” She smirked, looking over at him. “Has your mind settled down at all or is it racing with the oh hell what do I do now scheme?”
Running a hand over his face, Spot sighed. “It’s still running with the ‘oh hell what do I do now’ scheme. Will my mind ever shut off now that I have a newborn?”
“It hasn’t in four months so when I know, I’ll let you know.” Kat smirked. “You’ll figure out how to balance your day job with your full time job as a parent. Let me give you a hint, she’ll always be in the back of your mind. She’ll always be there waiting at the end of the day for you to walk through the door.”
Groaning, Spot shook his head. “Great, another person to distract me.”
“But it’s in the best way possible, Spottie.” She bumped his hip with hers. “Look at Race and look at Mack. That’s your world, everything else will just settle in and become part of that world.”
Spot looked at how happy his husband was before looking at Mack, now in FInch’s arms. “When did you become so smart, Kelly?”
“About the time I graduated from college and became a PA.” She smirked. “But I’m still learning. The whole being a mother is still teaching me stuff. But I will tell you one thing, you thought nights in the ER were a difficult thing - you haven’t seen anything until your child throws a rager at 2 in the morning, screaming at the top of her lungs.”
Another groan escaped his mouth. “Great, that’ll be the time I’m texting you.”
“Don’t. Addie is finally sleeping through the night and if you wake her, I will drive her over to your house and drop her off. Mark my words, Spot Higgins-Conlon.” She pointed her finger at him, giving him daggered eyes.
“Calm your jets momma bear.” Spot wrapped her in a side hug, gently squeezing her side. “But do you want to know what I’ve been most excited about since she was handed to me?”
Kat looked over at him. “What’s that?”
“Watching her and Addie grow up. They’re going to be thick as thieves.” Spot’s eyes went wide at the thought. “They’re going to be the best of friends.”
Kat chuckled. “Well when your daughter convinces my daughter to sneak out, I’m glad I’ll have someone up at all hours worrying with me.”
“What makes you think my daughter is going to be the one convincing anyone to sneak out?” Spot shook his head. “You take that back, Katherine Kelly.”
Shaking her head, she grinned. “You’re right, they will be the best of friends and it’ll be fun watching them grow up together. And I do think that you’ll have someone up during all hours of the night worrying about them but at least we have one another . . . . and wine. Wine makes everything better.”
“If I haven’t said it yet, you’re the best friend I’ve ever had and I’m glad I’m on this journey with you.” Spot smiled.
“Backacha, Spottie.” She grinned, watching the family try to convince Finch it was time to give up Mack so someone else could have a turn.
She knew that with Spot, Race, Jack and the rest of the family by her side, the two girls would turn out just fine. But with each of their pasts, she was worried about which genes would get passed on. However, that was a worry for a different day. There was a new baby girl and two new daddies to celebrate.
Thank you for reading. What did you think? Feedback would be wonderful and much appreciated.
JaliceWeek21 - Day 7: No Dialogue: This Time
Is... is this what organisation feels like? Having a fic ready to post?
Kayla wanted more Divorce Jalice, which I haven’t posted outside of Discord yet, but this is basically a snapshot of their reconciliation.
he.
I saw you for the first time when we were seventeen and, Alice, I fell in love with you first sight. God, I was a goner who made a complete fool of himself trying to impress you and, despite my very best efforts, somehow you felt the same way.
It takes him the best part of the week to write the letter.
He struggles to find the words he wants to say. It feels a little dangerous, even writing the letter - she made herself clear when she moved in, that she didn’t want to remarry him. That it had taken months of negotiations for Alice to even agree to move in. And then there had been the long debate about her paying her share, even though her freelancing was successful and she was rarely at a loss for work, every trip to the ER left her exhausted for days. She didn’t make a salary, didn’t have any benefits… it just wasn’t reasonable or even expected for her to cover exactly half of the household expenses plus her own - he knew how much she loathed taking money from her family, but had made peace with it when she had no other choice.
And they had been had reached a good place, together. He’d argue it was better now than it had been when they were younger - there was so much laughter, so much conversation, and there was never a night when he didn’t look at her, curled up asleep in his arms, when he didn’t thank every power on earth that he’d been given another chance with Alice.
This… this was something else entirely. This was putting his entire heart in her hands, and risking losing her entirely. He knew Alice, better than he had before, and he knew that if she wasn’t at least a tiny bit open to this, she’d just move out again. Give them both ‘space’.
So, he writes the letter over and over again until it’s as good as it’s going to get. Then he writes it again because he’s smeared the ink.
But finally, it’s done, and he keeps it in his bag - like a ticking bomb. He goes home, they have dinner together and go to bed early to make love and watch the end of a movie. He sleeps with her in his arms, and he tries not to think that if this all goes wrong, this will be it - the very last time. That she’ll be gone again, like a ghost, and he already knows how wrong that will feel.
He leaves her sleeping the next morning, with a kiss to her temple. He walks across the road to the bodega for the good bagels and a bunch of flowers. He leaves them in the kitchen, and props up the letter in front of the vase.
And then he pulls the rings out. The fine, etched wedding ring, and the sapphire engagement ring. The initials and dates are engraved in the inside of both rings, three sets of Whitlock grooms and brides. He’d felt like a failure when he’d taken them back, had broken a link in an unbreakable chain. They were always destined to be passed to one of Rosalie’s children, but freely given, maybe even bequeathed. Never across a conference table, in front of lawyers.
Never as an act of pity and kindness when he had been buzzing from whatever cocktail of pills and alcohol he’d chased with an espresso before he signed away any legal or emotional connection to Alice.
Fuck, he was still ashamed and guilty. He still hated himself, especially now he knew the entire story.
He stares at the rings in his hand and hopes. That’s all he has left. Hope. And then he tucks them into the envelope.
It’s done. Whatever happens next, it is what it is.
she.
I have struggled with how close I came to losing you forever, and I think I always will. I need you to know that you are, and have always been, the best and most precious thing to me.
It’s a normal morning when she wakes up. Jasper leaves the curtains drawn these days, leaves her to sleep the morning away, if that’s what she needs. There have been a few little set-backs with her health over the last few years, but mostly she’s good.
No, not good. Better than good. Happy, content, loved. It’s more than she ever hoped for, in those dark days between one failed surgery and the next; when she and her surgeons had to debate the benefits of more surgery versus a full transplant, and she was alone with no one to lean on, no hand to hold.
Looking back, she wants to comfort her past self, let her know that better days are coming, that Jasper will come back to her - and her Jasper, not the man she divorced - and she’ll be okay. That every empty hospital room, every nurse that pitied her lack of flowers, and family and friends clustered around her bedside as she waited for the doctors’ verdict, her chest stitched and stapled and swathed in bandages, is just another step closer to things being wonderful again. That she and Jasper are both better people, better friends, better partners and lovers for everything that happened.
She gets out of bed, and heads towards the bathroom - detouring into her bedroom to retrieve clothes. She’s got a half-done piece on her desk, one that needs to be finished and shipped to her client in the next week or so.
After her shower, she locates her phone. The lock-screen is a photo of her and Jasper, the weekend he dragged her to California for some conference. They’re sprawled out on a sun-lounger together, grinning at the camera. It’s her favourite photo of him, of them. She can see his tattoos snaking around his side, his arm, his shoulder, and his neck; his hair is pulled back in a ridiculous ponytail she finds impossibly sexy, and the smile on his face is pure, unadulterated happiness. She’s tucked into his side in the silly (he called them ‘hot’ and ‘adorable’) heart-shaped sunglasses he’d bought her when she forgot hers. She’s got her hands clasped against her chest, her head nestled against his, and she’s smiling too. She remembers being so nervous about wearing a bikini for the first time, with her scars, but he’d convinced her, and they’d had a great day. A few people stared, but that was normal.
That had been the week he’d started wearing his wedding ring again, and when she’d asked, he’d dismissed it by saying he was tired of people hitting on him, even after he told them he wasn’t interested - and at the conference, with alcohol and the beach, it would be more annoying.
She’d let him think she believed that excuse and let it go.
It’s after eleven, and there’s no messages from him. Usually when she gets up, there’s at least three or four - maybe a photo of good coffee art if he stops by his usual place; a link to a restaurant or a movie he thinks they’d enjoy; or maybe an article that will make her laugh. And always a ‘good morning beautiful’ just before lunchtime.
Not today, not yet. Not so much as a dirty emoji message as a joke. There’s one from Rosalie (lunch on Friday), one from a prospective client, and one from Esme (family lunch on Sunday, can she and Jasper bring a dessert).
She frowns as she slips into the kitchen, and her gaze falls on the flowers - a mess of bright yellows and blues and pinks and purples. They’re beautiful and unnecessary and she’s already reaching for her phone again when she sees the letter propped up against it.
And for a second, she thinks her heart stops.
they.
I know you didn’t buy whatever I told you about me wearing my ring again. Because it was never about anyone else. It’s about you and me, and my commitment to you - my promise that as long as you’ll have me, I’ll be here. And that’s why I want you to have these back - because they have always been yours.
He walks home the long way. Home, in that moment, feels like a trap. Until he gets there, slides the key into the lock, he still has a partner, a girlfriend, a quasi-wife who told him so damn clearly that she didn’t want more than what they had.
(He knows it all now. The depth of the hurt, the pain. Pondering if she should have just cancelled the surgery and died quietly in the bed next to him whilst he drank and got high and fucked around behind her back. The days she spent in a hospital bed, alone and forgotten whilst he sat in a hard plastic chair in a church basement and admitted he had a problem. The long nights in the ER, holding her breath that it was just a false alarm, and nothing to worry about. Couples therapy had been as damning as it had been cleansing, and he carries her lost years with him everywhere, reminding him to be better, reminding him of how close it all came to being unfixable. He understands why she shies away from remarrying him when their marriage was always tangled up in so much hurt, but it doesn’t stop him from wanting more, wanting the most she can give.)
She’s in the kitchen, cooking dinner, when he walks in the door. That has to be a good sign. The apartment is warm and cosy, and it feels more like a home than anywhere he’s ever lived. He doesn’t want that to change.
Clutching his peace offering - a raspberry cake from the place a few blocks away - he walks into the kitchen.
She’s always the most beautiful woman in the room, in the world, to him and that’s no different tonight. There are no words for her, flitting around the kitchen like she knows what she’s doing, the curl of her hair against her cheek, the way she bites her lip as she checks something on the stove.
The way she brushes her hair out of her face with a hand that is wearing a fine, etched wedding ring, and a sapphire engagement ring that has their initials and wedding year engraved on the inside, and his heart definitely freezes in his chest and she’s wearing them again and that’s not something he let himself hope for. He prepared himself for the very worst and he’s found the very best and he doesn’t know what to say.
She meets his gaze with that warm smile, the one that is a little secretive and knowing that she only ever offers to him, and he holds out the cake like an offering and as she takes it, her eyes lighting up, he moves around the island to scoop her into his arms and kiss her. She squeals and somehow manages to put the cake down before she throws her arms around his neck, and he can feel her smiling against his lips.
He kisses her like it’s the very last time he’ll ever kiss her, like he’s trying to prove something. And maybe he is. Maybe he’s always going to be making up the past to her, like he can erase the hurt, the pain, the suffering. But they don’t have a time machine, and she’s long since made peace with everything that happened. Addiction is an illness, like everything else, but one that never truly goes away. The same way her heart will always been a little bit broken, he will also have that struggle. Maybe some day it will win again; there will probably be days when he does fall, just as long as there are more days he doesn’t. And that’s okay - she didn’t fall in love with him expecting him to be perfect. And the more she thinks about it, reflects on the apologies and the things he’s told her about everything that happened, she knows he never intended to hurt her.
Jasper’s been the centre of her universe since they were seventeen, since he looked across a classroom at her like he was starstruck and then grinned, that same grin he’s wearing now like he’s won an unwinnable prize. As if she could have resisted him, back then and right now.
That everything she is to him, he is to her.
He pulls back to look her in the eyes, to take her hand wearing the rings and to kiss it. She kisses him again hard and that’s all he needs to hoist her over his shoulder, her squealing and laughing, and it’s the best sound in the world as he turns off the stove and the oven, and sweeps her off towards his room.
Towards their room, both of them giddy, drunk on each other, on the idea that they’re in the same place at the same time, happy, healthy, and whole. Together, forever (this time.)
There is nothing in the world I love or will even love a much as I love you.
Part 6 – Feeling Sorry
“Wait - they put her into a coma?” Javier asks Connie incredulously, his hands propped on his hips. He’s been in the waiting room for hours, worrying, hoping, and sometimes even praying - though he only did that once Steve left him alone to interrogate one of your captors.
“Yes, a medically-induced coma. She suffered severe trauma to her brain and chest, Javi. The doctors were able to control the bleeding in her abdomen but all the bruising needs to heal on its own while she sleeps. She–” Connie takes a second to clear the lump that’s formed in her throat, “God, I don’t know how she survived all that,” Connie says softly, a pained expression plaguing her features.
Javier runs a shaky hand through his hair as he closes his eyes, but all he sees is your bruised and battered body being rushed on a gurney into the emergency room.
“Javi, you can’t come back here - it’s hospital staff and patients only,” Connie tells him quietly but urgently. She places her hands on his chest when he continues to follow the group of people wheeling you into the ER.
Steve had called Connie - who works as a nurse in the hospital - when they found you in that cabin, informing her of the extent of your wounds, so she could prepare hospital staff for your arrival. She met them at the hospital and Javier felt the tiniest bit of comfort knowing she would be there with you when he couldn’t.
“Connie,” Javier’s voice cracks when he looks towards her, reluctantly peeling his eyes away from the double doors they rolled you through just minutes before. For the first time in his life, he feels completely and utterly lost. When he’d barged into that room and seen you tied to that chair - seemingly lifeless - his whole world had shattered.
“I know, Javi. We are going to save her, but you need to stay out here, OK? I’ll come back with any news as soon I know anything,” Connie squeezes his arms in reassurance before rushing through the doors where hopefully - God, did Javi hope with every fabric of his being - the doctors could save you, even if it was only so he could have the chance to tell you-
“Javi?” Connie asks hesitantly when he doesn’t respond. He nods to let her know he’s still listening, though he’s struggling to focus on anything other than the fact that you’re somewhere in this hospital, fighting to stay alive, and in a coma.
“Can I,” Javier clears his throat before he continues, “Can I see her?” he asks quietly. He grabs Connie’s hand with both of his, whether to plead with her to let him see you or for his own comfort, he’s not sure.
She gnaws on her bottom lip as she looks behind her to the nurses’ station and back at Javier again. “Give me a second,” is all she says before she walks back to the counter and converses with one of the other nurses for several seconds. Javier remains awkwardly standing in the middle of the waiting room, picking at the bandages Connie had insisted on wrapping around his hand and wrist after seeing them bruised and swollen. He releases a shaky breath, feeling about as weary and hopeless as he looks.
Connie returns saying, “OK, I can take you back there now, but it’s family-only, so…I had to tell them you were her fiancé,” she says with the slightest of smiles before she continues, “I would’ve said ‘husband’ but I didn’t want you to have a stroke,” she tries for a light chuckle and Javi appreciates her attempt at humor, given the grave situation at hand. And though he’d never tell her, he really wouldn’t have minded if she’d told them he was your husband. His stomach flips just thinking about the hypothetical situation, but he quickly shoves that thought aside to dwell on at another time - like when you’re not lying unconscious in a hospital bed.
He nods in response and motions for Connie to lead the way through the double doors of the intensive care unit. The two of them walk silently down a long hall until they come to a stop in front of the very last door on the left. Javier takes a long, deep breath and motions forward before he’s stopped in his tracks when Connie gently grabs his arm, saying, “It’s - she looks pretty banged up, but she’s stable - for now. I just - wanted to warn you, I guess,” Connie’s sentence dies out when she sees the expression on Javi’s face. He looks like a zombie, the bags under his eyes making him look years older than he is and his hair is sticking out in odd places from him running his hands through it constantly.
Without a word, Javi turns and pushes the door open slowly, thinking he doesn’t want to wake you - but then he remembers you’re in a coma, so the likelihood of you being woken up by a creaky door is basically nonexistent. He takes about four steps into the room until he sees you lying in the hospital bed.
His heart nearly stops from the sight of your injured body decorated with an assortment of bruises and bandages, lying completely still - save for the subtle up-and-down movement of your chest. It’s that motion alone that has him moving his feet closer to the bed - she’s breathing, she’s alive, he reassures himself as he slides into the chair that rests by your bedside. He immediately reaches for your hand that’s resting on your thigh above the blanket. But then he stops just before making contact, looking to Connie for permission because he doesn’t want to hurt you in your already-fragile state.
Connie nods softly and takes a couple more steps into the room, closing the door behind her. Javi intertwines your fingers in his and the first thing he notices is that your hand is freezing, so he brings his other hand to cover the top of yours, trying to share his warmth with you. “What are - all these machines?” Javi asks, never looking away from your face.
“She has a couple fractured ribs, but the doctors didn’t think she was strong enough to fix them in surgery, so they’re keeping a close eye on her breathing and heart rate in case–” Connie cuts herself off, unsure if she should proceed with Javier already being so shaken.
“Say it,” he turns his head slightly toward her while keeping his hands intertwined with yours. Connie takes a deep breath through her nose and continues, “in case one of the fractured ribs punctures her lungs, and they need to resuscitate and intubate her - so she can breathe.” Connie looks down at her feet, afraid she might start crying from seeing the fear and pain in Javi’s eyes at hearing how perilous the situation is.
He nods his head, feeling desensitized to everything. He hasn’t really felt much of anything these days - ever since he’d discovered you had been captured. But at that moment, it’s as if he’s not really in his body - he feels your hand in his, slowly becoming warmer by the second, but that’s the only part of his body that has any sort of sensation. Every other part of him is just - numb.
Javier takes in a shaky breath and doesn’t release it until he’s sure the tears welling in his eyes won’t fall - not in front of Connie, at least. “I’ll leave you alone with her, stay as long as you like,” Connie murmurs as she slowly backs away towards the door.
“Hey, Connie?” Javi calls after her with a little more strength in his voice. He releases your hand and takes a couple steps until he’s standing in front of Connie. She stops and turns, looking at him expectantly, “Yeah?” He looks down into her now-glassy eyes, trying to convey how much he appreciates everything she’s done for you - for him, “Thank you - I don’t know what would’ve happened - what I would’ve done - if you weren’t here.” He takes her by surprise when he pulls her into a strong embrace.
Connie slowly reaches her arms around him and returns the hug as they stand like that for a few seconds, each trying to find comfort in the other. When Javi releases her and steps back, he watches Connie wipe her cheeks with her sleeve and sniffle. “Of course, Javi. You don’t have to thank me. I care about her too, and - it kinda sorta is my job to care for the sick and injured,” she laughs lightly and sniffles again.
Javi nods his head with the smallest of smiles and waves to her as she turns to leave the room.
He stands there facing the door for what feels like hours, but really is just a couple minutes. He can’t help but think that if it were anyone else - maybe even Steve - in that hospital bed right now he wouldn’t hesitate to walk through that door and never come back - not even for a visit. He’s always hated hospitals - hated the way he could practically feel Death lurking around in every room - but as he takes a step closer to the door and closes it with a click, he’s never felt more sure of himself - and more determined to keep Death from so much as thinking about entering your room.
Javier walks back to your bedside and sits in the chair, exhaling heavily. He takes your hand again and brings it to his lips as he leans his elbows on the bed, looking up at your sleeping face.
“You know,” he whispers, “that first day I saw you at the DEA - all smiles and greeting everyone like you’d known them for years - I thought ‘This girl’s not gonna last a week down here’,“ he smiles at the memory, "Then when I actually met you and I tried to mess with you with the whole ‘what’s a girl like you doing in a place like this,’ line and you smirked at me,” he chuckles to himself, “I thought maybe I had a chance at getting you into my bed. But then - you knocked me on my ass when you said, ‘I’m here to catch Pablo fucking Escobar. And you - what are you doing here?’” Javier closes his eyes as he remembers the details perfectly, “And you offered me the sweetest smile I’d ever seen. It was right at that moment that I knew I was in trouble.”
Javi leans back in the chair, your hand still entwined in his, “I knew I had to stay away from you - that I shouldn’t–” he wipes his other hand down his face with a sigh, “I couldn’t risk spending time with you or getting to know you because I knew - I knew I could fall in love with someone like you,” he’s quiet for a minute as he watches you sleep, seemingly lost in his own thoughts when he murmurs, “Guess I never stood a chance, huh?”
He throws his head back against the chair with a sigh, feeling the weight of the past few days finally taking its toll on him. It’s only a matter of seconds before he falls into a restless sleep.
“Fuck this,” Javi curses as he shoves his door open and jumps out, barely noticing the DEA vehicles driving toward him.
“Peña, what the fuck are you doing?!” a fellow DEA agent shouts from one of the approaching vehicles, but Javier doesn’t even acknowledge him as he sprints across the dirt road as quick as he can with the heavy weight of weapons and ammunition lining his bulletproof vest.
He barely stops to think as he approaches the front door of the cabin, taking the few stairs two at a time until he reaches the porch. With his back up against the wall, opposite the hinges of the front door, Javier takes a deep breath and closes his eyes for a moment to collect his thoughts. Please, God - whoever’s listening - please let her be alive. Please don’t take her from me.
Javier opens his eyes to find his partner approaching with a handful of agents following, all with their guns drawn and ready to take down anyone that walks out the front door unannounced. Steve looks his way with a nod - I’ve got your back, brother, he seems to be telling him when he and the group of agents come to a stop on the other side of the door.
Javi nods back and puts his hand on the door knob slowly turning it and, to his surprise, finds it unlocked. Those smug fuckers didn’t even bother locking the door, Javi thinks as he reaches into his vest for the smoke bomb he pocketed there earlier. Pulling the pin out with his teeth at the same time he opens the door, Javier tosses the bomb inside and waits one second, two seconds, then BANG, the bomb goes off just as it’s intended to and Javi swings the door open with his gun drawn.
He hears the voices of two men cursing, no doubt because of the flash of light that went off just before the smoke erupted from the bomb. He scans the open area quickly, looking for the sources of the voices, when suddenly he’s getting tackled from the left side. He hits the ground with an oof! but quickly throws an elbow into the face of his attacker. The smoke clears as the two men get to their feet. Javier faces Serpiente, who now has blood leaking from his nose thanks to Javi’s elbow.
"¿Viniste a rescatar a tu novia preciosa?” Serpiente mocks, “¡Adelante! Yo ya la probé y - bueno - ella sí es un polvo MUY deliciosa,” he smiles darkly, baring his blood-coated teeth, and Javi reacts instantly, lunging at the other man with vengeful purpose. Serpiente knows it coming and goes to dodge, landing a punch to Javi’s jaw - but Javi recoils quickly, the assault only stoking the flames of his fiery rage. He shoves his foot downward onto Serpiente’s kneecap, sending him crumpling to the ground in pain. Then Javier really lets him have it.
Grabbing the man by the collar of his shirt, he roughly lifts him to his feet only to pound his fist into the fucker’s face, sending him back to the floor. He continues to pummel Serpiente’s face with his fist, all the while shouting obscenities in two different languages, “MOTHER-” a vicious strike, “-FUCKER,“ another merciless blow, “HIJO DE,” punch to the gut, “PUTA,” Javier slams his fist into the man’s face with a crack. Whether the crack is from Javier’s own hand or the other man’s mangled face, he doesn’t know - and I don’t give a fuck either, he thinks.
Javier leans into the man’s face, so close their noses bump. "Te voy a matar, cabrón,” he seethes as he clasps his hands around Serpiente’s throat with an iron grip. He’s so blinded by an all-consuming rage that he doesn’t notice Serpiente reach for the blade in his pocket until it’s raised above his head, ready to plunge into Javier’s heart.
But he doesn’t get the chance to bring the knife down on Javier before a bullet is put between Serpiente’s eyes. Javier snaps his head up and turns around to see Steve, his now-smoking gun aimed at Javier - no, aimed at Serpiente, whose body hits the ground with a dull thud.
Breathing hard from the exertion of the brawl, he struggles to find his bearings until Steve offers him a hand, pulling him upward. “Thanks,” Javier tells his partner, referring to more than just Steve helping him to his feet. Steve nods and tilts his head toward the center of the room. Javier looks around the room and sees another, more hefty-looking, man bleeding from his stomach on the floor across the way, but he couldn’t give two shits about ese cabrón.
Then he sees you, seated in - no, tied to - a chair in the middle of the space. Javier shoulders passed Steve and doesn’t stop until he’s standing toe-to-toe with you. ¿Dios mio - qué te hicieron? He thinks as he stumbles to his knees in front of you.
Your chest and arms are covered with various cuts and bruises - your shirt having been ripped open, leaving your chest exposed. Your bottom lip is split open and one of your eyes is bruised black. There’s a long gash on the side of your forehead that goes down to your temple and your cheeks are bruised various shades of purple and blue. Javier rests a shaky hand on your knee, “(y/n)? Hey, wake up! C’mon, hermosa, look at me,” he begs, his voice cracking.
When you don’t respond he places his hand on your cheek, careful not to touch the cuts on your face. His heart nearly flies out of his chest when you begin to stir - and even smile. “Please - please open your eyes,” he says your name in a voice that sounds as desperate as he feels.
“Ja-vi,” you croak out when you open your eyes, and he swears he’s never heard a more beautiful sound in his life. Sí, mi amor, soy yo - aquí estoy contigo y nunca te voy a dejar, he thinks, unable to speak because of the emotions overwhelming his senses and gripping his heart like a vice. You’re alive, you’re alive, his brain repeats like a mantra as he stares into your eyes for the first time in what feels like years.
And when you smile - God, he’s missed that smile - sunbeams burst through his chest. But then the pain-filled expression on your face brings him back to reality and he quickly goes to work untying you from the chair.
He notices the puddle of blood before he sees the stab wound in your side. The joy and relief he was feeling just moments ago is quickly snuffed out when he looks back to your face and notices for the first time how pale your skin looks compared to the last time he saw you.
“Javi I–” you start but it quickly turns into a wince of pain, making Javier’s stomach drop.
“Don’t speak. Save your energy. We’re gonna get you to the hospital,” Javi rushes the words out to prevent you from trying to speak again. It feels as if time is slowing down as he watches your eyelids start to close again. “Tell that ambulance to hurry the fuck up!” Javi shouts to the other agents in the room, his desperate tone instantly putting everyone on edge. No, God, please, he thinks as he cradles your face and looks into your eyes, “Hey, stay awake. You’re gonna be OK, mi amor, I promise,” his eyes frantically search yours for any indication that you’re hearing him. C'mon, hermosa, please - stay with me, but even his thoughts are laced with despair.
Then in a strained voice, “‘Mi - amor’?” you whisper and he nods his head, feeling a small ounce of relief that you’re still responsive. That’s right, mi amor - stay awake, let me see those beautiful eyes, he smiles softly and brushes his thumb over your cheekbone with just a feather of a touch. But his face instantly falls when your eyes close again, mumbling, “m-m - love.”
“No, no, no. Please, hermosa!” he repeats your name over and over while shaking your shoulders with desperation, but you never open your eyes again.
Javier wakes with a start, nearly falling out of the chair. His breathing is unsteady and he thinks he’s about to pass out again when suddenly he remembers where he is. He looks up and sees you lying in the hospital bed in the same position as when he first drifted off.
Breathing deeply, he leans his head back against the cushion of the chair and closes his eyes, but he quickly re-opens them because all he sees is your body sagging in that chair, completely lifeless. Fucking dream, he curses to himself as he finds your hand to take in his again. He leans forward and presses a soft kiss to your pale knuckles, which have gone cold again while he was sleeping.
How long was I out? He looks at the clock mounted on the wall and his eyes nearly bug out of his head, “Six hours?!” It felt like he was out for ten minutes, not six hours. Fuck - I don’t even feel rested after that fucking nightmare.
“Oh, you’re awake,” a quiet voice comes from behind him. A small, older woman with shoulder-length brown hair walks into the room carrying a tray with what looks like a medicine vial and a long needle. If she wasn’t wearing nurse’s scrubs, Javier would’ve grabbed his gun from his holster - the gun he had to give to Steve to take home because they didn’t allow firearms in the hospital rooms. Oh, right, Javier runs a hand down his face, willing himself to wake the fuck up.
“Sorry,” he mutters, not entirely sure why he says it but feeling the need to anyway. “No se preocupe. You must’ve been in a deep sleep. You didn’t even notice when I came in to check her vitals - twice,” the woman explains with a chuckle. He’s surprised she knows english so well, though the nurse has a bit of an accent, but he’s too tired to question any further. She practically skips to the opposite side of the bed and sets down the tray she’s carrying on the bedside table.
She turns to face Javi suddenly, saying, “You are Javi, right?” He nods his head, assuming Connie must have told the nurses who he was - he wonders if she also told them he was your “fiancè”. The nurse’s face glows with delight at his answer as she goes to work giving you medication. When she’s done, she looks up at Javi again and says, “I think she’s been dreaming about you,” she offers a sweet smile.
Javi furrows his brow in confusion and responds, “What makes you say that?” He sits up, suddenly very interested in what the woman has to say.
She brings her voice down to a whisper and leans forward like she’s sharing the hottest gossip in town, “Well, I was already in the room when they brought her in here and I heard her say - very clearly - ‘My Javi’ just before they put her to sleep,” the woman ends with a smile so wide, even Javier’s cheeks begin to hurt.
My Javi - he looks down at the very woman they’re talking about like he’s just seeing you for the first time. Your breathing is even, heart rate steady, and he swears there’s a bit more color in your cheeks than there was six hours ago.
My Javi - your hand is warmer now, so much so that you’re the one providing him warmth. He turns your hand over and kisses your palm, then places it against his cheek as he continues to gaze at you with adoration and awe and love.
My Javi - he closes his eyes and imagines you saying those words, the light bouncing perfectly off your skin and the way your eyes smile at him. He could fall asleep just like this and hope to never wake up if it meant being this close to you.
Javier is so lost in thoughts of you, he doesn’t notice the loud beeps of one of the machines until it turns into a low, consistent tone like a - flat line.
His eyes shoot open just in time to see the nurse smash a button on the wall as she shouts, “CODE BLUE! AYUDA!”
