Ji Kang, from Alchemists, Mediums, and Magicians: Stories of Taoist Mystics

Alchemists, Mediums, and Magicians: Stories of Taoist Mystics is a collection of biographies of 144 historical figures associated with Daoism, compiled under the title Xuanping lu 玄品錄 by daoist Zhang Tianyu 張天雨 (1279-1350) and translated by Thomas Cleary.

Ji Kang was styled Shuye. He was a man of Zhi prefecture in the state of Qiao.(9) He was orphaned early. He had extraordinary talent, far beyond the crowd. He was more than six feet three inches tall.(10) He was eloquent and handsome, but he made his appearance plain and didn’t dress up. People considered him distinguished and elegant, but it was innate, naturally so.

He studied without instruction from teachers, read widely and comprehended everything. He was married into the ruling family of Wei and was given a prestige title. He used to practice nurturing nature and ingesting elixirs. He played the lute and sang poetry, enough to comfort his heart.

He considered spiritual immortality to be an endowment from nature, not a product of learning. As for reasonable exercise and nutrition, the standards of Anqi(11) and Grandfather Peng(12) could be reached, so he wrote Discourse on Nurturing Life.

Those with whom he always considered spiritual communication genuine were only Ruan Ji of Chenliu and Shan Tao of Henei, while those who joined their set were Xiang Xiu, Liu Ling, Ji’s nephew Han, and Wang Ru, eventually making up the Bamboo Grove association.

Ru said he’d lived with Kang in Shenyang for twenty years and never once saw him either angry or joyful.

Kang used to gather herbs, roaming mountains and wetlands. When he’d get into a good mood, he’d become ecstatic and forget to return. The occasional woodcutter or thatch cutter who encountered him thought he was a spirit man.

He went to the mountains of Ji county,(13) where he saw Sun Deng and then went wandering along with him. Deng was sunk in silence and self-contained; he didn’t talk or say anything. When Kang was about to leave, he asked for a word of advice. Deng said, “Your talent is of a high order, but your way of preserving your body is inadequate.”

He also met Wang Lie, and they went into the mountains together. Lie once found some stone marrow like rock sugar. He ingested half and gave the rest to Kang. In both cases it crystallized.

Wang also once saw a silk text in a cavern and immediately called Kang to go get it, but suddenly it could no longer be seen. Lie lamented, “Shuye’s mentality is extraordinary, and yet even though he looked right away he couldn’t find it. That’s fate.”

When Shan Tao was about to leave, he was selected for office but recommended Kang in his stead. Kang then presented Shan Tao with a letter announcing termination of contact. In sum it said, “I have heard the sayings left by Taoists, that ingesting polygonatum and atractylodes enables people to prolong the life span, and I have a lot of confidence in this. Roaming the mountains and wilds, watching birds and fish, is a pleasure to my heart. Were I to become an official, I’d have to give all of this up. How can I abandon what I enjoy to pursue what I fear! Now I just want to stay in a humble neighborhood, raise my children and grandchildren, from time to time express my feelings about separation and distance from relatives and friends, talking about the old days. A cup of unfiltered wine, a tune on the lute—that’s the extent of my ambition!”

Now that this had been put in writing, it was obvious he couldn’t be compelled or constrained.

The governor of Nanhai, Bao Jing, was one in communion with the miraculous; Xu Ning of Donghai took him for his teacher. One night Ning heard the sound of a lute in Jing’s room; marveling at its refinement, he asked about it. Jing said, “That was Ji Shuye.” Ning said, “Ji was killed—how could he be here?”(14)

Jing said, “Shuye projected the appearance of dying, but in reality he just left the body.”

This appears in Gu Kaizhi’s(15) eulogy of Ji Kang.

11. Anqi Sheng is a legendary immortal associated with the island of Penglai. He is supposed to have lived more than a thousand years. The First Emperor of China, who was intensely interested in immortality, is said to have met Anqi on a journey east.

“Kang was poor and supported himself by working as a smith. In those days Zhong Hui, a friend of Sima Zhao, heard of Kang and went to visit him. Hui was a distinguished gentleman, esteemed for talent and ability, who rode on hefty horses and wore lightweight clothes, with a huge crowd of hangers-on. Kang kept working at his forge and didn’t pay attention. Hui was impressed with him.

“When Shan Tao was chosen to be a courtier, he nominated Kang instead. Kang wrote a letter refusing and cutting off contact, explaining that he personally could not stand current customs, not that he was slighting the example of sagacious kings of old. So when Sima Zhao heard of this, he hated Kang.

“Kang was on good terms with Lu Zhao and his younger brother An. An was smitten with Kang’s loftiness and would go to any lengths for him. Now, Lu Zhao had an illicit affair with An’s wife and then condemned An for disrespect and had him imprisoned. An called on Kang to testify for him. Kang’s sense of justice was not without appreciation, so he explained the matter.

“Like Kang, An was also very zealous in his will to save the world. Zhong Hui urged Lu Zhao to take this opportunity to get rid of him. So he killed An, and Kang too.”

Koei Tecmo has released new information, screenshots, and a developer diary for Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV introducing retainer proposals, foreign tribes, a new set of confirmed playable officers, character traits, and scenarios.

Here are the details, via the game’s official website:

■ Domestic System

Proposals by Retainers

Retainer officers will propose a variety of commands, from tactics to banquets, to the rulers (players) based on their characters and depending on what they see on the battlefield. These proposals happen each turn. Taking into account the officers’ opinions, deciding which proposal to execute becomes an important administrative task.

—Officers with the Wise character will make Proposals more often, making them important assets to a Force.

■ One Single Map

Foreign Tribes

When public order drops, in addition to bandits, foreign tribes will appear and cause trouble. The tribes are the Wuhuan, Xianbei, Qiang, Shanyue, and Nanman tribes. Areas these tribal units pass through will become empty areas and the player will lose control of that area. Players must quickly deal with these units or lose more land.

In addition to deploying troops to deal with these tribes, another option to deal with tribes is the “character” (traits) of officers, which can prevent certain tribes from appearing in areas to begin with. If the “character” is the same as the opposing tribe, the tribe will become an ally and may appear in an enemy’s territory for good effect.

—Areas foreign tribal units pass through will become lost to players who had control of that area. To minimize losses, strategize on how to stop them.

—With the Qiang character, not only will Qiang tribal units not appear, but they can appear in an enemy’s territory for good effect.

■ Officers

Zhang Liao

Officer of Wei. Fought throughout the land under Lu Bu, and served Cao Cao after Lu Bu’s death. In defense of Hefei, held off a Wu army of 100,000 with only 800 men of his own.

Gan Ning

Officer of Wu. Originally a member of the Bright Sails pirates. Discontent when serving under Huang Zu, was recruited to Sun Quan’s forces by Su Fei. Earned Sun Quan’s trust for his service against Huang Zu and against Cao Cao at Chibi.

Zhao Yun

Officer of Shu. Submitted to Liu Bei after serving Yuan Shao and Gongsun Zan. At Changban, cut his way into an enormous army to find and rescue Liu Bei’s son, Liu Shan. One of the Five Tiger Generals of Shu.

Jiang Wei

Officer of Shu. Originally served Wei but surrendered to Shu during the first northern campaign. Entrusted with the strategies of the dying Zhuge Liang. Attacked the north nine times until Shu’s strength was completely used up.

Jia Xu

Minister of Wei. Served Li Jue but felt neglected and joined Zhang Xiu. Brilliant strategist who defeated Cao Cao’s army numerous times, but later submitted to Cao Cao along with Zhang Xiu. Grand commander of Wei.

Da Qiao

Daughter of Qiao Xuan, wife of Sun Ce of the Wu Kingdom. Together with her younger sister, Xiao Qiao, they were known as two of the land’s greatest beauties and were referred to as the “Two Qiaos.” It is said that their beauty shone brighter than any moon or star and put the most beautiful flower to shame.

Xiao Qiao

The daughter of Qiao Xuan. She later married Zhou Yu of Wu. Together with her older sister, Da Qiao, they were referred to as the “Two Qiaos.” Upon hearing a rumor spread by Zhuge Liang that Cao Cao was after the Qiao sisters, Zhou Yu persuaded Sun Quan to declare war, ultimately leading Wu into the Battle of Chibi.

Sun Shangxiang

The daughter of Sun Jian, she was also the younger sister of both Sun Ce and Sun Quan. A tomboy, she took interest in the martial arts from a young age. When she later became Liu Bei’s wife, it is said that her ladies-in-waiting were constantly outside her room, dressed in full armor.

Bu Lianshi

Sun Quan’s wife. Mother of Sun Luyu and Sun Luban. Sun Quan instantly fell for her beauty, leading the two to marry. Because of her modesty and lack of envy led to the long life of her relationship with Sun Quan, leading her to be known as the most beloved woman of the courts. Was only able to become an official empress after her death.

Liu Shan

Weak-willed second emperor of Shu. Indulged only in pleasure in his later years, and favored the eunuch Huang Hao. Solely responsible for the downfall of Shu, his childhood name later became a synonym for “fool.”

Li Ru

Adviser and son-in-law of Dong Zhuo. The source of many of Dong Zhuo’s corrupt policies. Saw through the plot to use Diao Chan to assassinate Dong Zhuo, but did not act to prevent it and was executed afterward along with the other conspirators.

Chen Gong

Overseer of Zhang Mou in late Han. Accompanied Cao Cao after Cao Cao failed to assassinate Dong Zhou, but left him after witnessing his heartlessness. Later served as adviser under Lu Bu, but was captured and requested the death penalty.

Zhu Rong

Wife of Nanman King Meng Huo. Said to be descended from the god of fire. A strong warrior who excelled at using the flying swords. Captured both Zhang Yi and Ma Zhong alive, but was later captured herself by Wei Yan and Ma Dai.

■ Character Traits

Each officer is given a “character,” with some being useful in battle, some in administration and so on. There are over 150 of these characters, and some officers possess their own unique characters, such as Swift which increases speed when retreating, and Brave General which keeps that officer from being affected even if surrounded on the battlefield. However, there are also some characters that can be considered negative traits, such as not being able to set certain commands, or being easily provoked. To create favorable conditions in battle, it is important to devise strategies that make the best use of the characters of the rulers and retainer officers.

—Liu Bei’s unique character is Swift. Mobility is increased when retreating, and not effected by ZOC.

—Guan Yu’s unique character is Divine General. The assault and defense of allied troops in a specific range are increased.

—Zhang Fei’s unique character is Brave General. His unit is kept from being affected when surrounded on the battlefield.

Same Officer “Characters” and Effects

-Wicked

All stats of units of your force, except for ships and siege weapons, within a specific range from your unit are increased. (Intrinsic)

-Soaring General

ZOC is ignored for all terrains other than large rivers, and morale is less likely to decrease. (Intrinsic)

-Brave Leader

Siege ability of units of your force, except for ships and siege weapons, within a specific range from your unit is increased. (Positive)

-Disciplined

Your unit cannot be inflicted by the status ailment “disorder”. (Positive)

-Overseer

When over a prefecture, all stats of your unit are increased. (Positive)

-Water Warlord

Warlord All stats of your unit are increased on large rivers. (Positive)

-Famous

When assigned as an area overseer, land conquered is increased, and ransom amounts when taken prisoner are increased. (Positive)

-Reckless

In the Command Settings, “Ignore” cannot be selected for On enemy approach, and “Approve” cannot be selected for Auto Retreat. (Negative)

-Greedy

Your stipend is increased. (Negative)

-Notorious

The amount of troops required for your unit to expand its range of conquer is increased. (Negative)

Specialties

By gifting “Specialties” to retainer officers, they can raise officer attributes or provide special effects. They can be used to raise retainer loyalty, so strategizing is required to determine what specialty to give to which officer, and if it should be used to raise personal abilities or used as a tool for governing.

■ Scenarios

There are a total of seven scenarios, including the Yellow Turban Rebellion (February 184), the chaotic war that signaled the opening of the times, and Chu Shi Biao (February 227), the beginning of Zhuge Liang’s northern campaign. Players will be immersed in the game in these events that weave through the Three Kingdoms story. Strategically select from the wealth of colorful and appealing forces and warlords for each period, and aim to unite China.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV is due out for PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam on January 16, 2020 in Japan and February 28 in North America and Europe.

"Tian Fu zhi Guo" means ‘ The land of abundance’, which refers to the Chengdu Plain in Sichuan Province, where giant pandas live. In the early years ,the flood and drought disasters in the Chengdu Plain were frequent, and its prosperity benefited from a hydraulician named Li Bing, who construced Dujiangyan two thousand years ago . Dujiangyan eliminated the floods,irrigated the Chengdu Plain and made it become the land of abundance .

‘天府之国’的意思是富庶之地，它是指四川省成都平原，这里也是大熊猫的故乡。最初的成都平原水旱灾害频繁，它的繁荣得益于一个叫李冰的水利专家，他在两千年前修建的都江堰解除了水灾，灌溉了农田，奠定了‘天府之国’的地理基础。

2200年前，岷江几乎年年发大水

About 2200 years ago, the Minjiang River flooded almost every year

Hong zai zhi hou ,you chang chang chu xian gan han

洪灾之后，又常常出现干旱

Floods was often followed by frequent droughts

Ren men sheng cun kun nan ,liu li shi suo

人们生存困难,流离失所

People were difficult to survive and lost their homes

Gong yuan qian er bai wu shi liu nian ,shui li zhuan jiaLi bing dan ren shu guo jun shou

公元前256年，水利专家李冰担任蜀国郡守

In 256 BC, Li Bing，a hydraulician，served as the stadholder of Shu ’Si Chuan’ State

Min jiang bei yu lei shan dang zhu ,zhi hao xiang nan liu

岷江被玉垒山挡住，只好向南流

Minjiang River was blocked by Yulei mountain, had to flow south

Mei nian shan hong yi lai jiu jue di

每年山洪一来就决堤

Every year the mountain torrents overflowed the banks

Er zhe kuai di fang ze mei nian da han

而这块地方则每年大旱

And this place was dry every year

Wo men yao zao kai yu lei shan fen liu min jiang

我们要凿开玉垒山分流岷江

We need to cut the Yulei mountain and diverse the Minjiang river

It is very difficult

然后撬开石头凿出一个山口

Then pried open the rocks and cut a pass

Jiang min jiang yin ru dong bian gan han di qu

将岷江引向东边干旱地区

To lead the Minjiang River to the eastern arid region

You yu shan di jiao gao ,fen liu de min jiang bu neng man zu guan gai xu qiu

由于山地较高，分流的岷江不能满足灌溉需求

Due to the high mountain area, the Minjiang River can not meet the irrigation demand

Li bing jue ding xiu jian di ba ti gao shui wei

李冰决定修建堤坝提高水位

Li Bing decided to build a dam to raise the water level

Ke shi di ba hen rong yi bei tuan ji de Min jiang chong zou

可是堤坝很容易被湍急的岷江冲走

But the dam was easily washed away by the swift Minjiang River

Li bing cong he bian xi yi fu de fu nv shen shang shou dao qi fa

李冰从河边洗衣服的妇女身上受到启发

Li Bing was inspired by women washing clothes by the river

Dang fang ru shi tou dao xi yi kuang shi

当放入石头到洗衣筐时

When put stones into the laundry basket

He shui cong xi yi kuang de feng xi zhong liu guo

河水从洗衣筐的缝隙中流过

The river flowed through the crevices of the laundry basket

Xi yi kuang que bu hui bei he shui chong zou

而洗衣筐却不会被河水冲走

And the laundry basket won't be washed away

Tong yang de ,ru guo yong zhu long zhuang shang e luan shi tou ru jiang zhong

同样的，如果用竹笼装上鹅卵石投入江中

Similarly, if put pebbles in bamboo cages and throw into river

Jiang shui cong zhu long he e luan shi de feng xi zhong liu zou

江水从竹笼和鹅卵石的缝隙中流走

The river flows through the crevices of bamboo cages and pebbles

Dang jiang shui de chong ji li bian xiao hen duo

当江水的冲击力变小很多

When the impact force of the river becomes much smaller

Di ba jiu neng xiu zhu qi lai

堤坝就能修筑起来

The dam can be built

Li Bing dai ling bai xing yong zhe ge fang fa xiu jian di ba

李冰带领百姓用这个方法修建堤坝

Li Bing led the people to build dams in this way

Ti gao shui wei bing jiang Min jiang fen wei nei jiang he wai jiang

提高水位并将岷江分为内江和外江

Raised the water level and divided the Min jiang river into inside and outside rivers

Ji jian shao le yu ji shi jiang shui dui di an de chong ji

既减少了雨季时暴涨的江水对堤岸的冲击

It reduced the river’ impact force to the banks in wet-season

You yin nei jiang shui guan gai le gan han de nong tian

又引内江水灌溉了干旱的农田

And pumped inside river water into dry fields

Ke shi wen ti you lai le

可是问题又来了

But there was another problem

Nei jiang he dao xia zhai ,hen rong yi bei yu ji de ni sha du se

内江河道狭窄,很容易被淤积的泥沙堵塞

The inside River is narrow and easily blocked by silt

Li Bing you she ji le si xing de fei sha yan

李冰又设计了S型的飞沙堰

And Li Bing designed S-shaped desilting Weir

Li yong shui liu de chong ji jiang ni sha pai ru wai jiang

利用水流的冲击将泥沙排入外江

Using the impact of water flow to drain silt into the outer river

Shi gan jing de shui liu ru nei jiang

使干净的水流入内江

To lead the clean water to inside river

Li Bing you rang ren zai jiang di fang ru you ke du de shi xiang

李冰又让人在江底放入标有刻度的石像

Li Bing asked to put graduated stone statues at the river bottom

Dang he di ni sha da dao shi xiang jing jie xian shi

当河底泥沙达到石像警戒线时

When river silt reach the warning line of the status
