May my Emperor live ten thousand years!
An (un)official painting of the Emperor and Empress of Huaxia. I would absolutely bow for Wu Zetian. Maybe not Qin Zheng, but he is hot and communist so I am tempted.
This took me around 15-20 hours to make and it was so worth it <3
Details under the cut!
First off: the faces.
Because of how obscured it was going to be, I wanted to get a good sense of what Zetian would look like before the makeup and the mask. I tried to give her a kind of average appearance, because I wanted to try and make her look like a normal person under all of that Empress garb (she's only 18... she should have been at the clurbbb). Her face is purposefully a little asymmetrical.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For makeup, I went for the blush-that-makes-you-look-drunk look that was apparently fashionable among Tang ladies. Her lips and yedian are pretty standard. I saved the xiehong on the wrong layer like a clown 😭 but it's still visible under the mask. Not entirely sure if her huadian would be accurate, but it's the one on the painting of Empress Wu that I see most often.
Would Qin Zheng have a stroke if he saw Zetian hang out with men wearing this mask? Absolutely. Am I Qin Zheng? Nope I'm an artist who spent wayyyyy too long drawing Zetian's face and didn't want to cover it up fully. Her haircomb is in the shape of an upside-down butterfly. The sharp bit on the collar is inspired by a shirt I saw in the Hunger Games once, it's a style that's supposed to force you into keeping good posture. I hc that Qin Zheng included it to piss her off, and it's definitely working...
Tumblr media
Now for Qin Zheng's face. I tried to go for a simple, smooth-wing look. I never really envisioned him as twink-y when I read the book and tried to go for a hot-and-scary-man look whilst keeping it a little bit androgynous. He'd never ever have his hair down for a formal painting but I want to separate his face from the rest of the piece. His eye is weaker on his scarred side. He looks a little feverish and a little bit infuriated: he is probably wondering why the hell he needs to be painted when photographs now exist.
Tumblr media
It's a very busy painting and I fully expect people to gloss over this, so here's a little zoom on Qin Zheng gripping Zetian's armour. He's a freak.
Tumblr media
Now for the throne. I tried to do a dragon/phoenix piece but it didn't show very well in the actual painting, so here it is. You can really tell how much I love scribble art lol.
Tumblr media
And here's the base of the throne, with two dragons to keep our lovely tyrants company
Tumblr media
I opted for a double-seated throne because I accidentally drew them too close together and couldn't move them because of the layers because feminism <3
Now for clothing. I noticed that on the HT cover, Zetian has a white gem whilst Qin Zheng has a black gem, but the clothes underneath are the opposite colours. I made the details on Qin Zheng's armour white and Zetian's details black, but Qin Zheng's armour ends up being darker whilst Zetian's armour is a lot paler. Symbolism... or something... Also they both get a heart because its cute, like a friendship bracelet.
I really can't draw scales though so erm. Yeah.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you notice any er,,,, imagery in their lower robes it was unintentional I swear
Even though Qin Zheng is very much the taller, dominant figure in the piece, I tried to actually put the focus on Zetian, by making her armour a different shade of gold to the throne and by keeping her closer to the centre. I don't know if it worked but my eyes think so. I think out of the entire piece though, Zetian took me the longest because I hadn't settled on what look I was trying to go for her. I redrew her armour about five times, but thankfully by the time it was done I had pretty much solidified where I was going with Qin Zheng's armour and I finished that in no time.
Again I absolutely loved making this painting, it was SO worth it. It might me my most detailed ever. I adore Heavenly Tyrant so so so much it might actually be my favourite book ever lol.

So I'm skipping around watching the Blood of Youth donghua (spoilers ahead obv) and can I just say:
I love everyone's extended screentime and just how awesome they are??? I love that we get more time with them and get to see more of how the characters are as people and how they interact with each other.
Given that the drama and donghua are different mediums, it's really interesting to see the differences and changes they made to the drama in order to fit the main story into 40 episodes (ugh. Thanks for that ridiculous law, Beijing). But like...they still make sense and it's so great! Wuxin and Tang Lian's VAs also sound like the ones in the drama, which is really nice. Less jarring.
Also love how the extended series is able to follow the novel more closely to show us more of what the story was originally intended to be.
IT'S ASTOUNDING how the drama managed to replicate elements of the donghua. Also the actors NAILED their characters.
Tiannu Rui is such a badass. Just saying. She be slitting throats left and right.
They're all so ridiculous and I love how the donghua has those like whipcrack humor moments (ex. S3 Hua Jin trying to physically stop Mu Chunfeng from giving her the three kowtows to become her apprentice and when Lei Wujie is saving Xiao Se and Sikong Qianluo from the giant snake...only to be thanked with a foot in his gut lmao).
Although I am kinda tired of seeing the fur outfit on Xiao Se; it's so bulky and I can't help but think about how it must be so hot and how dirty the fur is with all their travels and adventures???
Qianluo and Xiao Se. I am DYING; they are so funny. There's this really sweet, subtle reveal of romance in the drama, which really fits in with the whole idea of youth and growth, and IT WORKS. The donghua is different though; still subtle as a relationship reveal as a whole, but with more time given to the show and characters, I love that we get to see a different take on Qianluo's brashness and ferocity and fearlessness and how their dynamic evolves as they continue their travels and adventures. Qianluo is forever my girl and I love her so much ;_;
Ruoyi <3 that's it, that's the bullet point
I was not expecting to see baby Baili Dongjun and Yue Yao in this
Forever crying over Li Hanyi and Zhao Yuzhen 😭😭😭

So about Netflix's the Last Airbender....
I am literally so confused you guys. You made me think I would HATE this show. And I LOVED it. Me. Known perfectionist and hater.
Katara was lovely. Yes, she started as a more soft spoken character than her cartoon version, but she was still passionate and hopeful throughout, just visibly unsure of herself. I think people were thrown off by this actress' natural way of expressing herself, which is Different from animated katara for sure, but not bad. Then she spends the whole season growing in Confidence and Fire. I Adored her fight with Paku, it really did feel like a payout of the whole season's development, and the bending kicked ass!
The Bending Kicked ass!!! The martial arts was fun and fast and creative and exciting! It looked SO good. That alone would be enough reason for me to watch and enjoy any show.
Zuko's actor was fantastic. He really captured the rage and confusion of this 16 year old banished prince. And there were so many Added moments between him and Iroh wich to me enriched their relationship. Like YES! This is why I'm watching, to see more of them, to see things done a little differently.
Iroh facing the consequences of his actions at Ba Sing Se!! That's what I'm here for!
Zuko's relationship with the men on his ship! That's what I'm here for!
The Extra layers we get to Ozai manipulating his children!
Also no one is talking about Admiral Zhao, who I had SO much fun with. I feel like they slightly fleshed out his character in a really dramatic way, really developing the hubris and frankly insane grasping ambition of someone who would kill the moon. I completely enjoyed this wilder, less controlled version of him, who comes up through the season from basically nothing and no one!
I am OBSESSED with King BUMI and his anger and disillusionment with the world! Like this was SO real. Living a hundred years of futile war would do that!!!! It is one of my favorite changes to the whole series. This new layer of emotion and character depth is what I'm here for!
Sokka was SO funny. He literally had me laughing out loud so often. That actor GETs Sokka, and GETS the way his humor is delivered. And is also able to tap into the more vulnerable side of him. People said he was "obsessed" with leadership. WHAT? That is a young person trying desperately to do his best and to try and find his place in the world, to figure what he has to offer. I loved his pride at hearing the Mechanist say that he would make a good engineer, and the sweetness of the moment that Yue's father says that he can be a hero without being a warrior. Sokka does so much growth in this series, in understanding himself and life.
And his chemistry with Suki was adorable!! I even like him and Yue (who was a totally unexpected sweetheart, despite her terrible wig)!! Like he has that same ability that Sokka has in the original to Connect with people.
Aang was great! He WAS fun loving and sweet and funny. I don't know what you guys wanted. Cartoons are always bigger and more exaggerated than live action. People's eyes swell up an, birds fly around their heads, and there are funny sound effects. That larger than life quality is the strength of animation! You have to look for different strength in live action. Like the SUBTLETIES of the acting choices. This little actor brought so much kindness, innocence, and strength to Aang.
And I FELT his frustration at being asked to do this at 12, his fresh hope anytime it looked like someone more experienced would be able to help him and no one did, and that's why he didn't learn waterbending this season, because he kept waiting for an freaking ADULT to show him the way, to help him carry this immense burden, but every adult he meets asks him for help instead, asks him to carry it himself, and then the finale hits and he realizes that there won't be any adults helping, he does have figure this out himself, and he makes the hard choice, takes on responsibility more than his years and offers himself to the ocean spirit, and he might have been lost entirely if not for Katara!
And that counter running theme to the show pays off: that he doesn't have to do it alone. He may not have more experienced guidance, because the adults have let him down again and again, but his friends will be with him, and they will figure it out together!
This is there throughout the series! Katara tells him this about learning waterbending, when he says he still wants to wait. Bumi tells him this in the palace at Omashu, and Aang sees the faith he has in his friends repaid!
I like these changes! And the show still found time for silly fun adventures and character building moments.
The show was never going to be the animated original. That is already a Masterpiece, and it frankly did NOT need to be adapted at all. I did not WANT a live action adaptation. I was adamantly convinced I would hate it. But the changes that they netflix show gave are what I Iike most about it. If I want to see Zuko say "you rise with the moon, I rise with the sun," I will go watch the animated original, because that version is perfect. And now, if i want to see Zuko say "Lu ten would have been proud to have you as a father," and see iroh pull him into a tight hug, I can watch this live action version, which is very good too. I'm going to disagree with most of the people on here and say that the Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender, DOES capture the heart of what we liked about the original show. It's spirit, fun, excitement, and characters. And the changes made are the reason we should be watching.

Will always amuse me how during the show azula is the only fire nation character that work completly for the sake of her nation
We have zhao who only wants glory to himself, we only see him thinking about HIS destiny as the moon slayer
We have ozai who only wants glory to himself and said his destiny is to defeat the avatar ( the Universe brought you to me as an act of providence)
We have iroh who only care about HIS destiny in ba sing se and did nothing for his nation ( didn't stop them and left the work for some childreen)
We have zuko who was for 2 seasons yapping how defeating the avatar is HIS destiny and later he start thinking being the firelord is HIS destiny, to the point leaving the fire nation was easy to him ( zuko words said it himself), the fire nation wasn't what made zuko struggles at joining the avatar but only ozai
Most of these characters didn't care about the fire nation more than their destiny, everything they did was because of a selfish reason
With azula things were diffrent
Everything she did was for her nation, from defeated the avatar, the Invasion and conquering ba sing se, everything was out of loyalty to her firelord and nation
We never see azula talk about her destiny during the show and in the novel she only talks about the fire nation destiny and not herself, azula also use we when she talks about conquering the world while the rest of the characters use I
Azula in season 2, accepted zuko by her side After he prove his loyalty So she didn't care about ozai orders ( until season three when she relized zuko lied to her about the spirit water that may bring the avatar back and puts her in direct danger)
You may argue that azula wants to be firelord, but why this a bad thing, azula only wanted to be a firelord when zuko become a Traitor, she is Literally the rightfull heir to the Throne
Unfortunately in the end she was the one who is most effected by the False propaganda،, and everything she did was for nothing and Everyone abandoned her, maybe if she was more selfish i will say she desevres it
Yes i know people wouldn't agree with what i am saying and probably will say how she is selfish because she was mean to zuko and wants mommy and daddy

Re-watching the original ATLA series (this like the sixth time) and I genuinely forget how capable and competent Zuko is when he's doing anything except chase the Gaang.
Like, we joke about Zuko being the original boyfailure, but he literally beat Zhao in the Agni Kai, broke through solid metal chains to free Iroh and literally all the stuff he did with as the Blue Spirit plus a lot of other cool shit.
So it wasn't so much that Zuko wasn't a threat to the Gaang... He almost succeeded in capturing them several times, after all it was him joining Azula in Ba Sing Se that gave her and the Dai Li the upper hand and led to the capture of the city and the electrification of Aang.
If anything the Gaang continuously bamboozling Zuko speaks more to how good they were at avoiding capture, rather than Zuko's own incompetence.
