Introduction to Watercolors Finale!
Did these ladies hit the ball out of the park on these final projects or what? I just adore every single one of their interpretations of the homework and in-studio project. They rocked it!
I am so thankful for this group of lovely people that participated in this first segment of the 3 Introduction to Watercolors classes that are scheduled through Mount Wachusett Community College.
One of our sweet classmates shared a book with the rest of us that she purchased and we all were super excited and were thinking we might want to pick up a copy of it. It’s a step-by-step entangle book with some really fabulous ideas in it! So I wanted to share with you all in case you’d like to grab your own copy!

Using Bing Create with the prompt: a scrapbooking page with a vintage calligraphy on paper background, a large tag with a white space to write, a pretty african american woman with braids dressed in a purple summer outfit and white tennis shoes sitting cross-legged with an open book on her knees, surrounded by swirls, flowers, zentangle leaves, oil painting, alcohol ink, sketch, creating a serene atmosphere

Zentangle is "an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. With the Zentangle method, anyone can create beautiful images from repetitive patterns, and even though it is a specified series of steps, it results in a creative expression that transcends its own rules.
Zentangles are based on:
Focus - each stroke is created with intent (even if the final result is a mystery)
No Eraser - work your mistakes into your design
Foundations (or limits) from the use of 'strings'
Abstract - no up or down, non-representative - ie: it shouldn't look like 'something'
Ceremony - sort of like a Japanese Tea ceremony for the mind!
Zentangles are created on small 3.5" square paper tiles and are made up of a foundation of 'strings' which are used to define areas which are then filled with 'Tangles' (single repetitive patterns). Tangles often have specific names and ways of drawing each pattern, in fact, there are books filled with tangle patterns! The act of creating a Zentangle is called 'tangling' and is a form of meditative art, where the artist focusses on creating each single line rather than a particular image. Zentangles are constructed in black and white, should not look like 'something' and are absolutely NOT a mindless drawing activity, but rather created with purpose and intent. If your Zentangle looks like something, it's no longer a Zentangle, but rather Zentangle Inspired Art (Z.I.A.) or a Zendoodle.
These are some of the Zentangles I have created, as you can see they don't look like a particular 'thing', there is no up or down, they are black and white with some shading, they use named tangle patterns and most importantly they were created mindfully, with intention and focus on the process.

Zentangle Art: creativity has no limits
Tumblr media
The first time I heard the term zentangle Art was 7 years ago by a Mexican art youtuber named Daniela Hoyos, she made tutorials on how to do zentangle art step by step and form your first mandalas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12yvV-DEk34&t=445s. My first impression was her style, it was something very colorful, repetitive compositions that were pleasing to the eye and the simple patterns, which were the same ones that she showed in the video, not difficult at all to start in the field of zentangle art. After a long time practicing it, I got bored because I felt that making mandalas was very repetitive and I consider myself a perfectionist who wants to make it look good down to the last detail and if the strokes did not come out well, it could damage my artistic work because it didn’t look good together.
After many years I got into Zentangles again, with the book One Zentangle A Day in which the author teaches you the art of zentangle step by step. So far I have discovered many patterns that I could never imagine existed at any point. This book has changed my perspective of this type of art, which I saw as limiting, now I see it as a type of art with a wide variety of designs that can be complemented with your own personal touch, a type of art that has no rules. It has no errors, and which can take advantage of every last space.
These last weeks that I’ve been doing Zentangle art, I’ve liked the process. It is something different in my daily routine and it is a way of disconnecting from my mind that makes me relax and take advantage of the time spent. I like to see the result of my compositions, it is satisfying to see the whole that is formed and to see how far our creativity can reach, which in my opinion is the only limit of Zentangle Art.

REVIEW: Tangle All Around: Our Art, Our Journey by Alice Hendon
Tangle All Around: Our Art, Our Journey was ranked number #1 in Amazon’s Pen & Ink Drawing for several days after it was released. Alice Hendon, artist and author of 9 books, and co-author of 4, is also founder and Admin of the Tangle All Around Facebook group.  Rest assured, this review isn’t about the group, but the members are integral to the book, so you need to know a little about…

Zentangle Reflection
In the beginning, I didn’t think I was going to like them. They just seemed tedious and something I could do within minutes, but turns out there really fun! I mean the latter thought is true, but that something that adds to it. You can do this anywhere, anytime as long as you have a piece of paper and a fine point pen. Turns out I actually really like doing them, and even designed a card to my mom based off of the designs taught to me from the book.
Speaking of the book, it does exactly what I need for it to do to make me understand. By adding step by step photos, along with word directions on how to do each tangle, I’m able to understand it a lot more. I personally am a visual learner, always have been and always will, so this helps me a lot.
I also like the creative freedoms that I’m able to have well doing these zentangles. Not a single on has to be exactly like it is in the book. Yes, some are harder then others and I’ve decided to stick close to the book designs, but where’s the fun if you don’t have a few challenges a long the way?
In the end 10/10 stress reliever
