Dr Who: The Mind Robber
After a small break, regular service is resumed.
I watched this serial on 23 January 2023. As with the Dominators, this is an extant five episode tale. It’s also a serial I haven’t seen before, and knew little about.
Interesting continuity reference to the fluid links malfunctioning before. It is amazing what happens when creativity is under pressure. The first episode was an emergency write since the producers cut an episode from the original running length for the Dominators. Anyway, the Mind Robber serial proper (episodes 2 to 5) introduces quite a few concepts that the series returns to a few times. They’re good concepts that suit Dr Who, so no complaints from me. And I think the game-playing works better in this story than in what remains of the Celestial Toymaker.
Zoe’s sparkling body suit is amazing. Not many people can get away with wearing an outfit like that. Ahem. Interesting that Zoe doesn’t say the name of her home city. It seems that she’s from the year 2000… unless that’s the name of the media company making the cartoon strip that Zoe and chums enjoyed as kids.
Fab first episode set up, and the cliff hanger is a shock. Whole story keeps up the momentum rather well. Five episodes works surprisingly well... References to ‘the master’ are amusing, but it’s not that one. This chap is an Englishman nicked from the 1920s. It does explain why the stories used are mostly of the type well-known to British kids of a particular time, place and socio-economic class. Sanitised Greek myths and fairy tales aplenty. Ha, though, at the mention of the publication this chap wrote for: Captain Jack Harkaway, hey. Yes, I did immediately think: what if there was an English school boy adventure serial about Captain Jack Harkness? It would make for a different serial altogether...
I can’t ignore episode 2’s replacement Jamie (actually Scottish actor Hamish Wilson stepping in when Fraser Hines was ill). I love the explanation: a brilliant critique of identikits and ‘face memory’.
Two oddities. Firstly, when the Doctor first meets Gulliver, they talk about language in a roundabout way. The Doctor grumpily insists on English. Secondly, it’s interesting that Jamie can read. It’s possible he was taught, but unlikely given what was going on in his part of the Highlands in the early eighteenth century and his social class. The TARDIS crew might have taught him, but when?
Anyway, the Mind Robber is a jolly fun serial.

The Dominators - Episode Two
Written by - Norman Ashby Director - Morris Barry Producer - Peter Bryant
Episode Two
("I've got to make them believe me, before it's too late!" - Cully to Zoe about saving the Dulcians before they're all either taken as slaves or killed.)
Likes
- Ooh, I like that the Dominators have a wall that can slide down and become a medical bay. That's nice. At least they have the equipment to actually pull off the looking at alien genetic makeup.
- I can't remember if he dies or not, but I sure hope not. I am loving Cully in this, just so much. Sass your way through life, my dude.
- Jamie agreeing to act stupid, when the Doctor told him to and saying that acting that way is easy. I love these two and the way they act around each other. Jamie's face after he had said it would be easy XD
- The fun of the Doctor and Jamie pretending to be Dulcians and bumbling their way around everything. But I especially liked the part with the gun. The Doctor used what little he knows of the Dulcians from this time period to use it against the Dominator. Nice.
- Zoe complaining about how the female uniform on Dulkis is impractical and doesn't feel right on her. I am just imagining what would happen if she was Polly instead. She loved playing with clothes and dressing up. Zoe prefers full body suits and practicality. Nice.
Dislikes
- Uh, maybe not mention very loudly that the Quarks need to save their power. It's like giving away your secrets to enemies who will use it against you.
- ...What kind of plan is this? "Oh yes, we nuked the site, the radiation's all gone now even though the area is still pretty much dead, let's make this shit site a holiday spot. People will love the nothingness going on of this historical event."
- Umm, the Dulcians are supposed to be an advanced race, yes? Why do they seem anything but?
- Did that Dominator at the end (I can never remember their names...) have the order to blow up and destroy the research station? I thought he was told to investigate not destroy. He's a bit more bloodthirsty than the leader.
Awesome
- Oooooh, my god, the props in this are so utterly silly and ridiculous I can't help but love them. Look at the silly as scanner glasses the Dominators use. Just...look at them.
- Look at that sideways view of the capsule. From that angle, they look like miniature rockets and nice to look at. Front view they look more like bullets with feathering on the sides. Like the Dulcians merged together arrows and bullets.
Shitty
- Don't really like the Quarks too much. They just seem....harmless, for a lack of a better word. They don't come across as intimidating. This may be a thing though about age and how I wasn't around in the 60's to watch this in real time. Maybe back then it was different? All my older whovians out there who were kids in the 60's, do you remember?
- Ooh, shadow of a boom mic got in there! Several times! Haven't seen that in a while XD
- This is likely to be on all of them, because just gyeh. Those shoulders on the Dominators. They go all around the back too. Those things must have been so horrible to wear.
In Conclusion
Not as boring as last episode, but not all that great either in places. Like that council meeting. What exactly was the point of that, except to see how annoying a bunch of people all in a room together can get while trying to talk over each other. Still, this one had a bit of fun in it, so I am happy with that.
The Doctor and Jamie shine in this, so much. Just pretending to be completely ignorant of everything. Zoe and Cully are also great to watch. Those two bounce off each other nicely. I also liked, as was up in my likes list, Zoe complaining of how impractical the clothes there are. Zoe, look, it could be worse. You could be wearing the Dominator outfit.
I also like Keel and Kando beginning to think and question things.
Much better than last episode but still on the meh side of the scale for Doctor Who episodes.
Body count - 0. No one but Zoe and Cully were in the station when it got blown up, and they were both very much alive in the last frame as the credits began to roll. Everyone else was definitely alive last we saw them.

Defrosting Grumpy Three (a Season 8 meta)
I keep thinking about how Season 8 of Classic Who is almost like the first one the show has to a ‘season long arc’ that I don’t feel gets talked about enough. Obviously everyone knows it as “the one where the Master is in every story” but I feel like there is a subtle character arc for the Doctor in this season as well which is tied to the two main characters introduced in the first episode; the Master and Jo Grant.
I’m not the first one to point out that out of Three’s five seasons; this is the one where he’s at his most grumpy and short-tempered. I know a lot of people point to this season as reasons for why they don’t like Three and I totally get that, he’s a real git sometimes, in particular the first and last stories. There are moments where he’s asking for a slap and, no, I’m not talking about him claiming to be buddies with Chairman Mao and a Tory MP. Because I would’ve thought it was obvious that he drops those names purely to gain trust of these people who don’t trust him (at least that’s my headcanon because it doesn’t fit with the anti-capitalist, anti-pollution, anti-imperialist writing). Just him being constantly ungrateful to the Brigadier, snapping at Jo, or just being childish in the most ‘kid throwing a tantrum’ way possible.
But it’s easy to get why. By Season 8 he’s been trapped on Earth for we can assume at least a year. New Who fans who’ve seen the Power of Three and saw how crazy Eleven went when he tried to stay on Earth to study the cubes just for a few days/weeks know the Doctor can’t stand staying still, especially in one time and place. In his first season he could be short-tempered but slightly less so. In Spearhead he’s quite polite and motivated, though that could be the most pleasant form of Post Regeneration Trauma he’s been through. Plus he had Liz, who you can see he immediately clicked with. A fellow genius who finds herself out of place or treated a little unfairly as a female scientist surrounded by men, both of them willing to sass the Brigadier when he deserves it. He also still keeps trying to fix the TARDIS, as if convinced this won’t be as permanent as the Time Lords intended.
But by Season 8 (or you could say even before that, in Inferno) his attempts clearly haven’t succeeded past slipping into a terrifying parallel universe, and now cabin fever is setting in. And Liz, his science bud, has gone off and left. And while it’s sad we didn’t get a goodbye between the two of them, her passing remark towards the Brigadier about the Doctor just needing someone to pass him test tubes and fill his praise kink maybe implies that, at least from Liz’ POV, they weren’t as equals as Three thought, or she didn’t feel that fulfilled working with him, even if she did appreciate him as a friend.
So enter Jo to replace Liz, who is everything Liz wasn’t. Liz had to study and work her way to her position; Jo is a spoiled girl who got to play spy by sheer nepotism. She failed A level science and doesn’t have the same sharp-wit he and Liz shared. Three is mean to her even before she introduces herself as his assistant when she only tries to help, and doesn’t hide his disappointment when she tells him. Perhaps it might also be that she reminds him of his companions before Liz; she’s cute and perky like Zoe and also loyal and determined like Jamie, even though she lacks Jamie’s physical strength and Zoe’s genius. Still, she’s young and he might not want to put her in danger the same way he nearly lost his previous young companions many times in the War Games.
When Three goes to the Brigadier to try to get rid of Jo, the Brig is far more smug than in the previous season, as he seems to have worked the Doctor out by this point. Their little moment at the end of Inferno where Three insults him and tries to escape only to then come back with his tail between his legs acting all buddy has shown him who Three really is; that this whole grumpy shtick of this is just a defence mechanism while he’s so out of his depth. I like to think the Brig hoped Jo would soften him up, to bring out the compassion that was more overt in his previous incarnation, as well as just pass him test tubes and keep tabs on him. His knowing smile when he watches Three try and fail miserably to fire her seems to prove his point.
In the same story we also have the Master showing up for the very first time. He was created to be the ‘Moriarty to the Doctor’s Holmes’. These kind of ‘foil enemies’ that pop up in so many stories, where you have a villain who is supposed to be a perfect match in intelligence or skill to the hero, are more often than not presented as ‘what the hero could have been’ if they chose to be evil rather than good; the Master is no different. And even though it’s not established until the next season that the Doctor and Master used to be friends, there’s clearly an underlining fondness in their banter which hints at past feelings as well as mutual respect. It says quite a lot that Three is more relaxed and friendly during his conversations with the Master half the time they talk than he is with the humans he’s meant to be saving, or even his own close friends. Because, for all their moral disagreements, the Master is his own kind and his only link - other than his broken TARDIS - to the rest of the Universe.
In almost every story of S8, after the Master has revealed his evil scheme only for the Doctor to point out how it will backfire on him, they have to work together or form some kind of alliance of convenience. In Claws of Axos, the Doctor outright pretends to betray his friends and elope join forces with the Master to escape, only for it to be a trick in order to defeat the Axons. But considering Three’s attitude in this season, it’s a very convincing act as much to the audience as to the humans. And then in Colony in Space, the Master offers the Doctor half-ownership of the Universe....and the Doctor clearly hesitates! Yes, the Master tempts him with the persuasion of ruling ‘in the name of good’ but Three has to take a moment to remember what a slippery slope that line of thinking is. He’s so tired of being trapped, sick of being leashed by the Time Lords, that the Master comes along as a devil on his shoulder at his most vulnerable point. Considering the last story involves the Master summoning the actual Devil (or close enough) and is also where Three’s temper seems to be at its peak seems all too fitting.
It’s also interesting that the Master’s greatest fear that appears in the Mind of Evil is an image of the Doctor laughing maniacally over him. It’s the closest we get to an image of Dark!Three in the show. To contrast; the Doctor’s greatest fear isn’t the Master, it’s the eruption from Inferno. Seeing the Earth swallowed by flame - not because of an outside force like the Daleks or Cybermen, but by humans themselves. It’s easy to imagine him wondering why he even bothers with them when they’re their own worst enemy.
(Side note; apparently the Evil Overlord in the Inferno parallel world IS the Third Doctor, according to the Expanded Universe, though I haven’t read up on this. We were robbed of seeing Pertwee play an evil Doctor.)
So while this is going on and the Master is playing his games with the Doctor while also tempting him, intentionally or not, to the ‘dark side’, we also have Jo at his side. And Jo takes all of the Doctor’s snapping and mood swings like a pro, and is very quickly overwhelmed with a lot of the stuff she’s faced which that she didn’t know she was signing up for - being hypnotised, captured by aliens, taken to alien worlds in the far future etc. She screams as most companions did at that time, but because it is what you would expect from a girl fresh out of school and throwing herself into something she clearly didn’t properly prepare for. The Doctor has to save her a lot, more than often because she tried to help only to get herself captured. As much as he does warm to her - because he’s not immune to how adorable she is - it serves to prove his point. Even when he finally gets to leave Earth for a day, she’s too frightened to want to leave the TARDIS. What good is she to him?
Now she continues to prove she has her uses. She has her escapology skills which get them out of a few tight spots. Depending on the writer, she can turn into an Emma Peel-esque agent capable of self-defence and subterfuge. And she’s always patient with the Doctor, no matter what mood he’s in, and extremely loyal. She’s also kind and compassionate with every side character she comes across. There seems to have been a backlash to these kinds of qualities in female characters in the past twenty years or so, what I like to call the Cinderella critique, where if a woman is kind and generous more so than smart, sassy and sword-wielding she’s seen as ‘weak’. Jo is always there at the Doctor’s side when he’s managed to get hurt or knocked out (Three took a lot of naps, anyone else notice this?). Even after he does whisk her away to another planet and nearly don’t make it back, she could easily throw her job away if it was too much, but she sticks with it because you can see that she wants more than anything to be useful and do good for her world - it would be another two season until she found what her own passion was with being an environmental activist but this is where she wants to start.
But it’s not until the end of S8 that we see Jo’s greatest strength and how it saves Three when every other defence he had was gone. He’s spent most of that story chastising her for believing in magic and superstition, as well as anything else he can find to snap at her for like criticising the Brigadier even though he does the same thing all the damn time (this could be seen as a ‘I can insult my bro but you can’t’ moment but it’s still not pleasant). But when he learns the Master is preparing to sacrifice her, he runs in to save her despite knowing it’s a suicide mission. He also gives a cold exchange to the Master when told he’s a ‘doomed man’.
Oh I’m a dead man! I knew that as soon as I walked through those doors so you better watch out! I have nothing to lose, do I?
It’s a telling line that, behind all his patronising and abruptness, he’s reached a point he doesn’t feel he has anything left to keep going. He’s lost his freedom and his knowledge of time travel; but he’ll die before letting Jo die or letting the Earth burn again. When Azal claims the daemons gave humans knowledge, Three responds: Finally he’s turning his anger on the one who deserves it to save the one who has been his friend, even at his lowest points, for the past several months, while still showing his disappointment in what he’s seen of humans living amongst them:
You gave them knowledge to blow up the world and they most certainly will. They can poison the water and the very air they breathe.
When Azal appears, he nearly makes the Master’s greatest fear come true by offering his power to the Doctor instead. And the Doctor looks horrified, immediately doing a Jon Snow and refusing it. Unlike when the Master offered him power before, he doesn’t hesitate for a moment, even though Azal’s powers could probably get his TARDIS working again in a snap. He looks almost scared at the thought of possessing something like that. Perhaps his dark persona in that other world became that way because he did take such an offer?
Azal prepares to kill the Doctor for refusing his offer, which is where Jo saves the day by offering her life for his. A lot of people dislike this ending for the idea of the villain being destroyed ‘by the power of love’ more or less, but this was a lot less common a deus ex machina as it is in New Who. The Doctor explains how it works when they’re free as:
Azal could not accept a fact as irrational and illogical as Jo being prepared to give up her life for me.
Three says it as he’s just as baffled, if also amused, by it as Azal was. Why would Jo give up her life for him? Compare that with when Ten has to give up his incarnation to save Wilf, how he rants that Wilf isn’t important but he has ‘so much more’ to give. Even the Doctor wrestles when it comes to sacrificing himself for others sometimes but Jo did it without a seconds thought, made even more illogical given Three’s often harsh treatment of her. But one thing that is obvious is that Three’s grumpy face is gone; he’s smiling for the rest of the episode, looking at Jo with quiet heart eyes, and letting her drag him into the maypole dance, conceding that she was right and there is ‘magic’ in the world.
Much like Rose was the companion Nine needed after the Time War to enjoy seeing the Universe again and appreciating life, Jo serves a similar purpose in S8 in that she gradually reminds the Doctor through her actions of the strengths in being brave, kind and selfless. She and the rest of the UNIT family are there to remind him of the goodness in humanity and that we’re always learning and trying to improve; as Three says to Azal that ‘they need a chance to grow up’. Jo is the angel on his shoulder to contrast the Master as his personal devil; right down to having her dressed in the sacrificial ‘virgin’ garb opposite the Satanic Master to cap the season off.
Three still has his sour moments after this but he’s far less cantankerous going forward and sweeter towards Jo especially, praising her bravery and learning in future, just as Jo also grows more confident in her abilities and enjoys her adventures with him. He seems far more relaxed on Earth and less desperate to get away because of the people he has around him that make it worth staying around for. Three’s morals and loyalty to humanity might not have been so firm had Jo not been there to ground him, especially with the Master constantly there almost holding out a hand to him offering freedom and excitement. Like all good companions, she saves the Doctor as much as he has to save her, in more ways than one, which she doesn’t get nearly enough credit for. And it’s what adds to the heartbreak of her eventual exit because of the effect she had on his life.
It’s just one of my favorite tropes when a character gets better and softens or becomes kinder not because they had to ‘change for someone else’ but because they were inspired by them, especially if it’s the person they underestimated the most.

Jamie Johnson 5x10 Review
Tonight was a surprisingly busy ep that did a good job balancing angst and levity. Let’s dig in!
Dillon finally went home tonight after what was probably a couple of weeks. The show continues to do great work with Dillon’s sexuality. Graham begins to make amends by coming of his own accord to the Walker-Cotton house and apologizing to Dillon but he hasn’t magically become a good person. He wants Dillon to keep his sexuality a secret which Dillon pushes back against but as loathsome as Graham can be he does have a point that being openly gay could very well derail Dillon’s football career; after all it’s the same conclusion that all the gay professional players in Britain have reached. This whole story line has been surprisingly nuanced especially for a kids show. Shaun Duggan mentioned that Graham would have a journey of his own and I would assume we see more of it in the final eps
One thing I do think the show has failed to do is include Dillon’s mom. Presumably they don’t have the actress this season but we really needed to see her support Dillon on screen when his dad and brother are homophobes. Hopefully they bring her back in S6 (and bring back Elliot)
It’s a minor detail but I really liked that when Alba comes into the living room to share her news that through the window we can see Graham walking towards the front door; it shows a real attention to detail on the part of the production team. Also the ‘’We Are Family’’ poster with the rainbow on the kitchen wall while Dillon and Graham talked was an inspired touch
The small moment when Dillon asked Becky and Dawn what he should do was really cool; seeing adult lgbtq people give advice to kids dealing with their sexualities is rare on tv in general, on kids tv it’s virtually unheard of; Cami and her gf trying to help Bobby on Doafp being the only example that comes to mind. The show did a great job normalizing lgbtq parents and families and there was an excellent implicit contrast drawn between the loving and supportive ‘non-traditional’  Walker-Cotton family and the cold and strained ‘traditional nuclear’ Simmonds family
I’m so glad that Ruby and Alba have finally been adopted and the photo album Becky and Dawn made was very sweet. I wonder if they stick with Osborne as their surnames or start using Walker-Cotton
Dillon being second in the credits? We love to see it folks
Zoe gets a recruitment montage for a heist soccer game so her and Kat can have one last chance to impress Geri Seddon who apparently doesn’t work very hard at her scouting job if she’s missed all these players. In the first good deed Jamie has done in weeks he calls up Jack and she gets Archfield to play against Zoe’s ragtag team. To the show’s credit Archfield pretty easily wins the day at Goodfield as they realistically should. Zoe and Kat get into Hawkstone though and Alba gets flagged as a future talent so all’s well that ends well
Zoe vaguely apologized for being an ass to Jack and she finally did the right thing with Kat and returned the pendant which which Kat promptly lost again. Zoe treating other girls as the enemy has been a core part of her story since she joined the show back in S3 and it looks like that’s behind now as her and Kat are real friends
I think Mike calling for girl power was the funniest line of the night
This Eric/Aisha/Freddie love triangle is a right mess but I’m finding myself invested regardless. Freddie and Aisha have good chemistry and their commentating was cute. Freddie not knowing Kat’s last name was funny as was Aisha’s observation about Mike’s yelling. Aisha was also right about peanut butter and honey being a delicious combo
We got a refresher on Eric’s sad backstory, brutal that he hasn’t seen his mom in 2 years.  Well I’m sure that Eric’s issues with abandonment won’t come into play as Aisha and Freddie grow closer! Imagine tuning into a livestream for a football match only to hear two 13 year olds get into a pissing contest over a girl they both fancy
Also nice to see the kids be kids and go to the cinema
This show has really done a good job with diversity especially since the series isn’t set in or around London (S1 was filmed in Nottingham and recent seasons have been filmed in Wales). In particular, JJ has avoided having their two black male characters, Eric and Freddie, fall into stereotypes. As much as I can’t fathom why the show needs this love triangle, it is refreshing to see two black kids shown as the closest thing this show has to romantic leads. American kids shows have done a great job with female black characters but when it comes to black male characters things are much worse. Zay on GMW largely fell into the sassy black friend stereotype. As for Walker on Andi Mack, the less said the better about how he was romantically involved with two girls of colour only to lose out to two white boys before being written off as a shoe gifting player in a way that played into harmful stereotypes about black men being promiscuous
Another ep where Jamie basically just makes a cameo but because the show has such a wide bench it doesn’t hurt the ep at all. Boggy is basically Jamie’s housewife at this point and it’s sad as hell to watch
I think this is the first time Jack has been back where she hasn’t had a scene with Jamie. The official insta account reposted someone asking the show to make Jamie and Jack a couple, we’ll one day learn if that was straight baiting
Interesting to think about how different the show would be if Jack was still a main, would Dillon’s story be getting nearly so much focus?
Looking Ahead:
Liam thinks Aisha is Eric’s soulmate? I wouldn’t have pegged him for a romantic at heart. I love that he keeps bouncing around the friend trio trying his chances with a new member every week, at the beach he tried with Freddie and now he’s trying with Eric
It seems likely that Eric is denying that he likes Aisha because of his abandonment issues and it looks like he skirmishes with Freddie on the field. I wonder if he’ll be honest with anyone about his feelings
Boggy’s breakdown is upcoming, I really don’t think he’s Jetpac11. Looks like 5x12 is the video game tournament with the Jetpac11 reveal, I still think it’s Archie Royle, but Jethro Stevenson would be a great twist
I lean more and more towards Dillon signing with the Northport Rovers as a way to forge his own path and because he trusts our problematic fave Duncan Jones to stand firm against homophobia. It would also bring Duncan’s S5 story full circle, he was so focused on trying to bamboozle Jamie into signing for Northport that he overlooked the other very talented player he had right in front of him. It seems like Dillon’s story line is trending towards him wrestling with coming out publicly as a professional player in S6 and proving to himself, his father, and the world that an out gay man can be a professional footballer
Until next week Jamie Johnsoners

Name Game Pt. 2
Yeah I have more thoughts since writing this post.  But also, for now, until I settle on something, I’ve decided to go by Jamie.
(I also meant to post this yesterday on my birthday because that was appropriate, but because I’m me...! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I’m not 100% happy with it, but I do like the sound of it, it does have some resonance to me, and because my parents always called me J, it lets me keep that for anyone who isn’t sure what to call me, or wants to address me in spaces where I’m not out.
And the rest, I shall slap under Ye Olde Cutte...
I DO have a shortlist of names I like;
Jamie Nicole Caitlin Zoe
I’m sure there are others, but I am brainfarting right now.
AND HA HA!  I actually remembered!  There IS a female name associated with healers!  And get this, it’s Brigid!  So if I went with that, A) I get to keep the same associations with my old name, 2) it’s largely Irish, and C) She is also associated with fire!  That name popped into my head and reminded me of the associations two days after my first post, of course.
So that sounds like a pretty perfect name, but I’m not sure if it ‘sounds’ right to me/for me, or if that’s just ‘need time to get used to it’ weirdness.
I’m gonna stick with Jamie for the time being though, because I don’t want to get too annoying with “And TODAY my name is...!” plus to just give things a good trial period.
Also, and I admit this is silly, I am really invested in Killer Frost this season on the Flash, as she is on a quest to find her own identity, find out who she is now that she is becoming an actual person, and part of that is picking an actual name for herself besides “Killer”.  So I kindasorta wanna wait to see what she picks, and if I like it. ;)  But since that plot thread got dropped HARD and hasn’t been mentioned in almost eight episodes (Okay fine, Crisis, but c’mon) and they’ve all just been calling her “Frost” it might be a non issue.
Also also, there’s a trans kid showing up in X-Factor’s relaunch whom I am also really curious to learn more about.
Also also also, just because she’s coming out at the same time, I am interested to see what this new female Cyclops inspired character’s name is.
Like I said, those are all mostly silly curiosities (Although I am more serious about KF) that I just wanna see what happens there, more than anything else.  If I’m in a holding pattern and see stuff coming, might as well take a peek.
But for now, Jamie is a good placeholder, so yeah, hi, I’m Jamie.
AND THAT FEELS REALLY WEIRD TO TYPE

My Favourite TARDIS Teams
Tumblr media
Yesterday on Twitter, Doctor Who Online asked the fandom which was the greatest Doctor/Companion pairing ever. This got me thinking. In the same way that I could never pin down a favourite Doctor, I doubt I could pin down a favourite TARDIS team, out of all of the TARDIS teams. But perhaps I could pin down my favourite team per Doctor! It seemed like a nice excuse to talk about some of the characters my reviews hadn’t touched upon yet. You may notice, I left out the War Doctor. While I do love the War Doctor, I’m not sure if any of the people he interacted with in the audios were what you could consider a full companion. That being said, I decided to dip into anything from the comics to the audios in some spots. Please note, this is not a list of who is best, merely, who are my favourites!
First Doctor: Susan, Ian, and Barbara
Tumblr media
This one seemed like an obvious choice. It’s hard to argue with the original lineup. However, beyond this trio being the original crew, there’s a lot more to love than seniority. When we meet Ian and Barbara, they’re initially at odds with the Doctor. They’re more captives than companions, which makes their reluctant heroism a story of character development. We watch them become a tight-knit family through shared experience. This is something we see less and less throughout the First Doctor’s tenure, and it’s sad to see. We got characters like Dodo who was clearly added in to be a strand-in for Susan. By the time Ben and Polly show up, it’s as if companions are simply there to witness the Doctor and call him "far out." Giving the Doctor a familial link and two intelligent adults to answer to, added gravity to the situation. His actions had consequences. The Doctor wasn’t just magnificent with this team, he grew as a person.
Second Doctor: Zoe and Jamie
Tumblr media
For this one, I could have easily just said Jamie and left it at that. Jamie, Jamie, Jamie. All-day, Jamie. But then our sparkle-butted whiz kid from the year 2000 shows up, and she’s wonderful. Why so much love for Jamie? I think most of the fandom would agree he’s the essential Second Doctor companion. Not only do Frazer Hines and Patrick Troughton mesh so well together, so do their characters. I'm not a person that usually ship's characters, but I easily ship Two and Jamie. There’s a certain magic when you pair the Second Doctor’s bumbling eccentric with Jamie’s rough and tumble man out of time. You get two characters who are most dangerous when they’re underestimated. As Terry Pratchett said of his character Carrot Ironfounderson- "Where people went wrong was thinking that simple meant the same thing as stupid." However, this is not to say that the pair weren't in need of a bit of direction. Zoe brought a grounding presence to the team with her headstrong confidence. One of my favourite Zoe moments is when the Doctor defers to her math skills. Before this era, the Doctor hadn't really been one to ask his companions for advice. A lot of the framework for future companion relationships was forged in the Second Doctor era. There's also something sad about the way the relationship ends between the three of them. Zoe and Jamie's minds were wiped of all memory of the Doctor and returned to their original timelines. Barring future retcons, they would never know of the brave adventures they had with their cosmic hobo friend.
Third Doctor: Sarah Jane
Tumblr media
This one was hard. I could have easily picked Jo Grant. But I went with Sarah Jane for the same reason I didn't go with Sarah Jane for the Fourth Doctor. When Jo Grant had entered the show, it was after the rather unceremonious departure of Liz Shaw. Part of the reason Caroline John left Doctor Who was mirrored in the reason Liz left UNIT. She took issue with a strong woman being sidelined in her job by a male. Not very "women's lib," of them. Enter Jo Grant, who was basically there to be an assistant. This is why I love Sarah Jane for the Third Doctor. She comes in with her business lady suits and her fast-talking gumption. There's a wonderful way that she balances out the Doctor's ego while losing none of her sensitivity. Sarah Jane brings a certain realness to the companions in a way we hadn't seen since Barbara Wright. I also really admire the way she reacts to danger. There's a complete lack of vanity in her performance. Sadly, I feel Sarah loses a bit of her edge when she joins the Fourth Doctor. She trades her lady suits for Andy Pandy overalls. While Elisabeth Sladen will forever be one of the greats, I simply feel she worked best with the Third Doctor.
Fourth Doctor: Leela and K9
Tumblr media
I may have lied when I said I can't pick a favourite TARDIS team out of all of them. This may be the closest to what I would call "favourite." It's always surprised me to discover that many fans rate Leela quite low. The most common reasons people usually give me are along the lines of why Tom Baker disliked the character- she was too violent, too one-note. I couldn't disagree more. In my mind, Leela's one of the few classic companions with a clear character arc. Essentially, Leela's story is one of rediscovering her roots. But on a simple level, it's a story of atheism. Leela's people weren't meant to be the Sevateem, worshipping technology like relics. They were a survey team, a group of scientists. As the Doctor teaches Leela about science, she learns more of what she was always supposed to be. However, I would be lying if I said I didn't also love that she's a murderous badass. There's something delightful about seeing this jungle warrior stalking down a corridor with her robot dog friend. It's a wonderful juxtaposition of anachronisms that screams Doctor Who. This is easily one of the most dangerous TARDIS teams, with Leela's knives and Janis thorns, and K9's death rays. Not only is the Doctor forced to teach Leela restraint, but is also forced to use it himself. Wouldn't it be easier to just let his friends do the dirty work? But at what cost? Interesting stuff.
Fifth Doctor: Tegan, Nyssa, and Turlough
Tumblr media
This one was a bit more difficult than others. Not because I couldn't decide, but because I've never exactly been all that enamoured with the Fifth Doctor's companions. Kamelion and Adric definitely weren't making the list (sorry not sorry). I wasn't going to include Peri either as there wasn't much to go off with her. I'm also slightly averse to any further adventures for Peri and the Fifth Doctor via audios and books, as I feel it undercuts the Fifth Doctor's sacrifice in "The Caves of Androzani." Which leaves us with these three. As companions, I would say they're all just sort of... fine. Despite the fact that the three of them are on screen for only two stories (seriously, finding a picture of all them together with the Doctor was very hard), I couldn’t discount any of them. Nyssa sadly has the least bit to do out of all of them. They usually relegate her to the TARDIS with a headache she needs to sleep off. That being said, I really like her gentle nature and the fact that she can somewhat make heads or tails of the TARDIS. She's an alien with a big heart, I can get down with that. Turlough I actually rather enjoy. I like that he's a bit of a coward and a bit of an opportunist. I even named one of my cats Turlough because of his orange fur. He's also got a great character arc with his Black Guardian storyline. Tegan is the rogue element out of the three because I can't really fault her. She's got some genuine moments of showing her brave heart, but she's never really excited me. She just wants to go to Heathrow. Would that be too hard, Doctor?
Sixth Doctor: Evelyn
Tumblr media
Poor Peri, she's getting all kinds of sidelined today. Really, the girl deserves a medal for all of the Doctor's shit she puts up with. I'm a bit of a Peri fan in all reality, but she's not my fave. That distinction goes to Evelyn Smythe. I spoke a little in my article about older companions about my love for Evelyn. Working as a history lecturer for Sheffield Hallam University, she was an older, learned woman. Because of this, the Sixth Doctor seemed to always want to impress her, as opposed to just always assuming he was impressive. She had a way of calming his more abrasive tendencies which really allowed him to shine. This isn't to say that she was some stuffy buzzkill, however. In a story like "Doctor Who and the Pirates," we learn that Evelyn likes a good laugh, even if she's a rather rubbish storyteller. Had she ever travelled with Frobisher, I would have added him as well, as he was a close second. Sadly, Maggie Stables has passed away, so further Evelyn stories are no longer possible, but we were able to say goodbye to her character in "A Death in the Family."
Seventh Doctor: Ace
Tumblr media
As I mentioned in my article "The Doctor with 1000 Faces," Ace was a clear case of course correction. A few years ago in Newcastle, I got to meet Bonnie Langford. While she seemed like a nice person, I had a really hard time saying something I liked about Mel. I literally defaulted by saying "I liked you in Doctor Who," which was basically a lie. I didn't. It just wasn't her fault. And while I've revisited Mel and rather liked her in stories like "Paradise Towers," the introduction of Ace was an automatic improvement. Not only does Ace elevate Sylvester McCoy's performance, but she also breathed new life into the companion archetype. Ace didn't react to danger with mindless screaming, she was brooding and mysterious. There are moments where I laugh at just how much a delinquent she is. The girl carries explosives around like it's something everyone does. I told Sophie Aldred that Ace and Leela were my two favourite companions. I don't know what it says about me that I really like the smashy-smashy, stabby-stabby companions, but I do. There's just something really fun about the dangerous action girl with the mythic space nerd dynamic that I really love.
Eighth Doctor: Izzy and Feyde
Tumblr media
This was another one that was difficult for me. I could have easily said Lucie "Bleedin'" Miller, or maybe even Fitz. I also have a somewhat incomplete knowledge of the 8th Doctor's companions. I've not yet listened to his audios with Mary Shelley, Tamsin, or Molly. I ended on Izzy and Feyde however because of their obvious impact on the show. Taking place in the comics, during the wilderness years between the TV movie and the 2005 series, this was some of the best Doctor Who available. Not only were Izzy and Feyde one of the first LGBT depictions in Doctor Who, they were also highly enjoyable characters. With Izzy we got to see some of the groundwork for characters like Rose Tyler and Lucie Miller. She was a modern girl who was a bit of a geek. I found her very relatable, even during her time as a fish. Feyde was an easy choice to include, and I do mean Feyde and not Fey. While being a secret agent from 1933 is cool, being a secret agent from 1933 merged with a sentient Time Lord weapon is way cooler. I could have gone with Shayde for the Fifth Doctor (hell, I should have gone with Shayde), but I wanted to save him for his time as Feyde. Having one companion who body swaps with a fish, and another that shares a body with an alien weapon, who also have lesbian feelings for one another is a recipe for some very interesting storytelling. Russell T Davies is a notable fan of this era of Doctor Who, so much so that he offered to let them show the 9th Doctor regenerate within its pages. If you've not read the Doctor Who Magazine comics, you should be. If for no other reason than for the Eighth Doctor's sublime era.
Ninth Doctor: Rose, Mickey, and Jack
Tumblr media
Rose is a very divisive companion in the fandom. I know because I've taken part in the mud flinging until I realised that such endeavours were stupid. Seriously, if you're a hater of other people's tastes, you should stop. Let people like stuff. That's not to say I am a fan of what they did with her when David Tennant came into the TARDIS. For me, Rose Tyler will always work best with the Ninth Doctor. Having both met at a time when neither of them knew particularly what they wanted from life, they both seemed to have a healing quality toward one another. I was willing and able to believe that the two of them genuinely cared about one another, and the relationship blossomed because of this. It was a great way to reintroduce fans to the show after such an extended hiatus. The Doctor was this unknown figure who we got to discover and learn to trust through Rose Tyler's eyes. When the family grew with characters like the flirty Captain Jack or the goofy but earnest Mickey Smith, it only added to the dynamic. It was an exciting group to watch, and one that hooked countless new viewers.
Tenth Doctor: Donna
Tumblr media
I will go up to bat for Donna Noble. I once had a roommate who brought a guy home who didn't like Donna Noble. When I asked why, he said she was ugly and annoying. When he left our house, I told her to dump his ass for his bad opinions about women (she agreed). Donna is a goddess. Much like Evelyn, she has the ability to temper the Doctor's shittier qualities. I mentioned I dislike how the Tenth Doctor interacted with Rose, and he definitely didn't appreciate Martha for the MVP she was. Donna was funny, she was nurturing, and she didn't let people push her around. There is nothing I don't like about her character. She gave the Tenth Doctor an accountability like Ian and Barbara gave the First Doctor. Seeing him interact with someone as an equal developed his character in ways we hadn't seen before. It was also really nice, after so much puppy love mooning over the Doctor, to see a companion who was literally just a friend. I've always preferred the Doctor's relationships to be platonic. I know some people like the idea of love in the TARDIS, but I'm old fashioned. Donna was so perfect for the Doctor that her ending could only be tragic. They say you never forget your first Doctor, but in the case of Jamie, Zoe, and Donna, it's sadly not true!
Eleventh Doctor: Amy and Rory
Tumblr media
This one seems like a no-brainer to me. I would say the golden age for Matt Smith are his early adventures with Amy and Rory. I've heard people complain about Amy because of her lack of development outside of an obsession with the Doctor. While Rose Tyler had a job and a family, Amy had the raggedy man and years of therapy. But I can forgive all of this because of Karen Gillan's fiery personality. She kills every line of dialogue and sells every dramatic moment. I absolutely love her. Rory is more of a slow burn, but he achieves something I think they've tried with many other male companions and failed. He's able to question the Doctor's actions in a way that doesn't make him come off like a cocky prick (Adric) or horribly misguided (Danny Pink). His lack of hero worship toward the Doctor is a sober counterpoint to Amy's undying adoration. (If you remember correctly, I also named my other cat Rory after him). By the time the three gel into a team, they're like a family, and not just because of River connecting them in a familial way. You'll notice that I didn't include River, and this is simply because I have a lot of issues with the way her story was written. The whole meeting from opposite directions thing led to a lot of implied chemistry. It broke the rule of "show, don't tell," in a way I felt was detrimental to her character development. Despite a really lousy final episode, Amy and Rory are some of my favourite modern companions. Seriously, their goodbye in "The God Complex," should have been their actual goodbye.
Twelfth Doctor: Clara
Tumblr media
Oh, Clara... I could write an entire article on my feelings about Clara Oswald. I would title it "The Many Faces of Clara," but it wouldn't be any of the split time stream versions, it would be about the ever-fluctuating character type of the companion Clara Oswald. She's all over the place, and it's a mess. Sometimes she's goofy, other times she's a stern killjoy, then she's a careless daredevil. I don't believe the writers knew what to do with her for most of her run. The impossible girl thing was, in my mind, a total misfire. But I can't help but feel like when she's with Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor, she's given the most to work with. I went back and rewatched a lot of her episodes, and her stuff with Capaldi is some truly great Doctor Who. I didn't include Danny because he had so many issues as well, but I couldn't reconcile them. He spends the entire time barking at the Doctor in what was becoming a really sad trend of the Doctor not being able to get along with male companions and competing for the attentions of the female companion. I really tried to come away with a new appreciation for Danny, but his reluctance to stop a Cyberman invasion to prove a point that the Doctor is a general, was so stupid. "I'm going to let the world burn to win an argument." The worst part is, he wasn't even right about the Doctor, and we as the audience knew it. Clara, on the other hand, when she's outside the influence of the "impossible girl" storyline and Danny Pink, she's actually pretty damn compelling. It took her three seasons, but she gets there. This was just barely enough to edge Bill out of running. I'd also love to see Bill come back in an audio, as I feel she never got a proper shake. Make it so!
Thirteenth Doctor: Ryan, Yaz, and Graham
Tumblr media
What other choices were there? That being said, I rather like all three of these companions. I've covered, rather extensively, the pros and cons of all three companions in my reviews for season eleven. I find it humorous that most of my friends were least excited by Graham, considering what a darling he's become in the fandom. I love the guy. It's no secret in this blog that I have been a big Graham fan from the start. Yaz is a character I think all of us can agree needs way more development. With that being said, I think we get a pretty good idea of her moral compass. I also really love Mandip Gill in the role. She's a great actress and not at all hard on the eyes. Tosin Cole as Ryan is a really interesting character because I keep fluctuating in between not being able to tell if he's a good actor or not. Either way, the scenes between him and his dad were some of the best of the season. I love the way the group defers to the Doctor. They really do seem like a team with a belief in the good they're doing. People can talk about the spotty nature of season eleven, but the fact remains, the characters are there to make me want to see what's in store for season twelve. Chibnall has given us three distinct individuals that we want to watch develop, and at the end of the day, isn't that what it's all about?
Well, friends, that's it for now! I hope you enjoyed this article! Did any of these match your picks? Was I totally wrong? Who are your favourites? I like to think there are no wrong answers because this fandom is vast and there's so much to love! I'll see you all soon!

How many kids does Bucky have in your verses/ships? Tell us about his babies plz!
Hello! Thank you for asking, I love that someone wants to hear about them haha. For future reference, I also list out his kids/marriages/etc on my relationships page!
He has a daughter with @mxndwitch, named Ella Katerina! We actually haven’t done much with her, mostly the pregnancy stuff, but all you need to know is that she’s fucking adorable and Bucky dotes on her the most. I feel like she takes after Wanda in looks but Bucky in attitude, and can be a handful (if the amount of time she spent kicking Wanda’s insides was any indicator).
He has an adopted son Connor (who has his own blog @bloodmoonphased FOLLOW) with @battlesthatmatter (wolf!rogers) in his vampire verse. Connor showed up at the Farm one day as a wolf pup, though they realized he was a true-born werewolf. He’s a little tyrant sometimes and has learned many bad habits from his parents, but he’s a total sweetheart and Bucky would kill for him.
He has a son with @heartvaulted, named Jamie! He was unplanned and tbh Bucky is freaking out a little, but he’s already fallen in love with Maggie’s daughter Zoe so he’s there to stay. Parenting is super scary but between him and Maggie Jamie is gonna be just fine
He has a daughter with @ofgunsandlipstick named Abigail Michael, after his younger sister and Peggy’s brother. Her nickname is The Human Tornado because she’s so energetic and exciteable, and she often exhausts her parents to no end. But she’s the light of Bucky’s life and he adores indulging in her every crazy whim.

NEW SSO WILD WEST AU CHARACTER SHEET for Miranda
Tumblr media
Name: Madam Miranda ?
Age: 37
Occupation/Role: Is working on transforming the brothel into a boarding house and place of learning. Still operates a ranch with cows/sheep/olive and orange orchards.
Team Good or Team Evil?: She’s def team good now. But she can do bad if she needs to.
APPEARANCE: Slimmed down a bit as she’s working on the ranch more these days.
Hair/eye/skin: Long wavy brown hair. Braids it when working, but otherwise wears it down. Dark brown eyes/Keeps out of the sun enough to have fair skin. She’s still kind of vain about her pale skin.
Build: Heavy set, stronger than she looks as she still does stable chores at her ranch.
Defining Characteristics: Small scars under one eye and over another, a few others that aren’t immediately visible from bar fights where she had to defend a girls honor. Tattoo of an angel on her back.
Clothing Style: her clothes are more modest now. Her satin gowns are packed away, but she still sports some fine dresses when she does go into town. She still prefers more manly garments when she works or travels.
Signature Look: Lots of blue and gray shades. Wears a large coat to cover her gun belt. No makeup still. Prefers to let her long wavy hair loose (even if it would be considered inappropriate for a woman her age to wear her hair down). Generally wears a silver heart pendant and silver and gemstone jewelry.
Demeanor: Still prefers to stay quiet and let people talk. She’s a little more nervous after the war. Around her family she’s a chatterbox.
Mostly she’s kind to people, but she wants any potential enemies to think her coldhearted and capable of destroying them.
STORY
Origins: Family moved with a small group of other vaqueros when work was promised up north with a wealthy land owner from somewhere far across the sea. The land owner was good to his cowboys, who defended the land (sometimes with their lives) and the cattle and horses. Mother took care of the ailing matriarch of the land owners family, and the land was left to them and the two remaining vaqueros when the grand dame passed. Mother became a midwife and nurse for the town- But after so many battles, Father turned to drinking and fighting. They returned home, with a modest savings, but Miranda opted to stay and work the land they were left with. Several acres, a rather large herd of cows, a handful of horses, and a good fertile garden. She sold the cows and purchased the big empty boarding house in town… since the saloon sprang up and the drunken patrons got themselves into a lot of trouble after the gambling tables closed, she gave them a place to go entertain themselves.
Economic Status: She has SO MUCH money. Srsly she did real well with whorin’ and now makes an adequate amount from the store and boarding house.
Motivations: She still feels there needs to be a safe haven for young women without prospects of marriage, or travellers. Now she just wants to make sure people don’t come and destroy the town.
ALLIANCES
Horse Name/Breed/Color/Sex: Her personal horse is an Azteca Gelding, (whose parents were brought over from home) named Silvershade. (like this guy but more brown)
(pretty sure aztecas aren’t period accurate but… shush)
Pets: a bunch of kitties at home. Jamie, her boyfriend, has brought poodles into her life so now they have large black poodles too.
Partner/Love Interest: James the assistant Blacksmith (not James who runs the Farroh table lol). He’s also an inventor, pf sorts. They live together now.
Stage of Relationship: He went to the brothel when it was opening, and was so nervous and shy and cute she, uh, took care of him personally. They’ve been (secretly) exclusive ever since. His parents back home are trying to get him to marry wealthy, lol, but not like this.
Other Alliances: Her girls were her best friends. A few stayed on to help her run the boarding house. The ones that were married off and traveled write and send gifts. Zoe the schoolmarm is a close confidant.
At home she has her daughter, Rose- whose existence would be a scandal and so she keeps her from the town, mostly. Also, the two ranch hands that stayed behind (and their wives- who care for the kid).
SKILLS
Level of Education: Likes to read, and when they came abroad language was a thing she immediately threw herself into. Though her formal education stopped at the 8th grade, she forced herself to study beyond that.
Fighting Skills/Style: Once a brawler like her father, now she only has to show her gun is unholstered… (she doesn’t fight nearly as often now, though she practices shooting to maintain her aim).
Trades and Talents: Languages, story telling. A good cook. She likes to sketch. Mostly she’s just good at finding peoples secrets and using them to her advantage. in business she shady af
MISCELLANEOUS: The madame all but disappeared after the war. Folks thought she died. This was cemented by the lonely grave marked “M” in the local cemetery, tucked away in a corner- almost off the property, the one her girls brought flowers to pretty frequently.
She had been trying to live a double life, but didn’t think it ever really caught on until she heard from a passerby that the Madame had been killed in the war and folks were vying to buy the brothel to turn it into something more respectable. She took it upon herself to transform the brothel herself.

July 9, 2021
Friday we slept in! Well, I slept in until 11:30, Zoe until 11 I think, but Janell and Steve woke up earlier, but just lounged around in bed while we were snoozing. I woke up when Janell had just made breakfast. She made waffles, a scramble, and sausage, with a ton of fixings! I had two waffles with peanut butter and syrup and it was amazing! Janell told us her family grew up eating huge breakfasts every day, so she still likes to do that. Her family and Steve’s had just visited before us, so she was used to making a lot of food, haha. Janell grew up in a tiny town in Oregon, on a farm with cows and pigs. We had a really slow morning and it was so nice! I had some coffee and got ready with a little make up on.
Our first stop of the day was Janell’s neighbors. There is a couple that had four Galapagos Island tortoises! I don’t think I had ever seen one in real life? Sandy was one of the owners and came out to meet us in her yard, where two of the tortoises lived. The larger one was 350 pounds and named Horris. Her two large tortoises are 22 years old and aren’t even mature yet, so they don’t even know if they are male or female yet! We brought some Romain lettuce from Janell’s and Sandy gave us some zucchini and we got to feed them! They were such gentle creatures. They also really like getting their neck scratched, and their skin was such an interesting texture! Sandy and her husband also have about a third of their house as a parrot sanctuary with six parrots, but we didn’t go in there. Across the street, in a little lot, were the two smaller tortoises. They are six years old and one was named Seabiscuit! All four of them came when you visited—they probably knew we were coming with food. We got some fun pictures and videos and then headed back to Janell’s.
There was a rain, thunder, and lightening storm that afternoon, but it passed really quickly. We didn’t have a ton of plans, which was fine with me! Steve and Janell had a small motor boat called Big Bertha, and they were going to take us out for a ride and to the coolest place in Stuart, the Stuart Sandbar! We grabbed a cooler full of water and hard seltzers and beers, sun screened up, then headed out on the boat. Steve drove us everywhere—thanks Steve! Stuart is still “affordable” (not for me!) but the houses on the water were so nice and huge! Some of them were completely shuttered and unused, since their owners just lived there in the winter. Big Bertha didn’t go too fast, but that was fine with me. The houses got bigger and more extravagant the closer we got to the sandbar, including a huge mansion owned by the Walgreens family.
The sandbar was actually a pretty big area. It wasn’t too busy, but other people had their boats out with their friends, family, and dogs, too! Some of the sandbar even had mangroves growing on it. The four of us hung out in the water for a few hours, which was so fun! They had two floaters and we had some drinks while lounging around in the water. It was hot, but you almost didn’t notice when you were in the water for that long. I had a sneaking suspicion that I was getting burnt, and unfortunately, I found out I had gotten really burnt, later that night.
After being on the water all afternoon, we cruised to a restaurant across the water (the little bay is called Manatee Pocket, isn’t that cute?), called the Twisted Tuna. I had missed a call from an apartment complex that Ingvar and I were applying for, so I called them back and am happy to report that they have a one bedroom apartment available for us in late August! That was a real relief for me, because I had been really stressing about where to live in September.
We docked the boat at Twisted Tuna and got a table for 7 and a high chair. Their good friends Jamie, Kate, and their almost three year old Reevee joined us almost as soon as we got there. They are a really nice family! We all got some drinks and shared some appetizers of crab and spinach dip, calamari, and alligator bites! The alligator was actually pretty tasty and the spinach dip with crab was great! I do think I’ve had alligator once or twice before, but Zoe hadn’t. For dinner, I had coconut prawns and fries and the prawns were amazing! Janell and Steve left for a minute to drive the boat over to their place, because her friend Mackenzie had just drove down from Jacksonville! They came back with her, and she ordered the fish and chips. She seemed really nice, too!
After dinner, Jamie, Kate, and Reevee called it a night and went back to their place. The five of us wanted to go on a tiki boat tour around Manatee Pocket! We got picked up right at Twisted Tuna and it was only $10 a person to go on this big boat with a tiki bar and go around the harbor! We stayed on it for one hour, which was pretty fun! Janell and I were still in our bathing suits and coverups, so after that, we got back on Big Bertha and jetted across the bay to their place. I took a shower and got ready for bed, but we all stayed up pretty late after that. In the shower, I realized how burnt I really was. I think I put on aloe four times that night? I was so disappointed in myself, because I’m usually so good about wearing and reapplying sun screen! But, I am really not used to being in direct sun, for hours at a time, without realizing how hot it was, since I was in the ocean. I chatted with Mackenzie until about 1 am. She had two kids, a boy who is 9, and a girl who is 5. (I forgot to mention earlier, Zoe has a 17 year old boy, and 3 and 5 year old daughters.) Mackenzie is a gym trainer and has a really bubbly personality! We were the latest to stay up that night, haha. It was a great day, in Stuart, Florida!

I Can’t...
Two-part one shot fic (Spoilers: Doctor Who Series 4-9, Classic Who companion spoilers for characters Jamie and Zoe). A little over 3k words
Whouffaldi if you really squint and turn your head
12/Donna and 10/Clara (both nonromantic)
...remember
It was very, very stupid.
The Doctor knew it. The TARDIS knew it. Heck, even the universe itself was probably screaming to get himself under control.
But he didn’t listen.
Because there was one person, only one, who could even begin to understand how he was feeling. Sure, maybe he could track down Jamie, or Zoe. But he needed something more dangerous than that. With the Time Lords gone, what would their punishment be? No, he needed to walk a terrifying line between life and death. Maybe he would finally lose his mind.
Maybe then he could remember Clara.
Donna looked out her window at the perfect time to see the man fall.
She had just finished lunch, and was tucking the rest of the sandwiches away, but she set them down nonetheless and raced out to the stranger on the sidewalk.
“Oi! You alright, mate?” She said as she approached, and the stranger looked up.
“Ah, yes. Sorry. Must have let my mind wander.”
“Nice accent. So not from around here, huh?”
Oh, his Donna hadn’t changed a bit. Smiling gently, the Doctor brushed himself off, accepting the hand up she extended. It was hard to fall, even if on purpose.
“Thank you.” He said when he was upright, but she didn’t let go of him immediately.
“You in a hurry? Or in need of some lunch? Because I’ve got too many leftovers, and Shaun will kill me if he sees them all. He doesn’t approve of the diet.”
The Doctor almost fell over again, this time from the staggering pain in his hearts. His Donna, his beautiful, smart, amazing Donna, back to her old ways. Dieting, never feeling good enough. Being ashamed of her secrets and her pain.
“I think you look beautiful.” He whispered, trying to keep composure. Donna dropped his hand and stepped away. “I just mean-- the dieting. You don’t have to. I think you look fine.” He saw the tension in her shoulders ease, though there was still a small hint of mistrust there. “And I would love a sandwich, if you’ll eat one with me.”
“Alright. But only because you’re old and you fell.” She said with a smile. “Come on in.”
“It must be hard to have lost your friend.”
Donna’s voice was quiet, contemplative, as she washed the dish in the sink. The Doctor (under the alias Jamie McCrimmon) was sitting at the dining table, staring up at her and clutching the glass of water that had been offered to him.
“Yes, I believe it was.”
“You believe?”
“Well, I-- I can’t quite remember.” Donna’s methodical strokes of the plate slowed.
“Whaddya mean, ‘you can’t remember’?” She said, a note of anger seeping into her tone.
“Well, I, uh, have some slight memory issues. I must have fallen again right after. I don’t know much… well, about her at all, really.” At that Donna stopped completely, setting the dish down and turning around to face him. Wiping her hands on a towel, she sunk into the chair opposite him.
“Well, that really sucks.” She said, tossing the towel back and attempting to crack a smile.
“It does.”
“I mean, that REALLY fucking sucks.”
“Language!”
And with that, the conversation started to flow; was he married? Yes, his wife Melody was at home. Any kids? One, who passed years ago. Was she married to this ‘Shaun’? Yes, she was. Any kids? None. Parents? Her mother. Her grandfather passed quite recently.
“It was weird, y’know.” She said, taking the Doctor by surprise. “When his time was ending, Gramps used to go on these long tangents. Something about needing a doctor, and then refusing to talk to one when they were brought in. We would ask him which doctor and he would say ‘The Doctor’, as if there was only one. Can you believe that? And well we asked him, right, ‘Doctor Who?’ And he had a right old laugh about that. Never did figure out who he was lookin’ for. You alright?”
“Yes! Yes. Fine.” The Doctor said, sitting up and setting forth a large smile that he hoped wasn’t too obviously fake. “I think I better get going. The wife will be wondering where I was-- I was only going for a walk.”
“Well, it was quite a riot talking to you, Mr. McCrimmon.”
“Please, Donna, call me Jamie.” He stood up and shook her hand before walking to the door. “It was lovely to see you.” Stepping out, he turned back before he could stop himself, and Donna paused closing the door. “Donna?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you ever feel like you’re missing someone? Or something?”
“Odd question. I used to.” She said, eyes glazing over for a moment. “About when I married Shaun, maybe ten years back? But I think it was just worry over what to do with my last name. Went the hypon-ed approach. Donna Temple-Noble. Why?” And her gaze was blank again, only marred by slight confusion. The Doctor’s stomach dropped, and he scolded himself for it. Of course she didn’t know. Of course she couldn’t know.
“No reason. Farewell, Mrs. Temple-Noble.” And with that, he left.
...forget
It was very, very stupid.
Clara knew it. Me knew it. Heck, even the universe itself was probably screaming at her to get it under control.
But she didn’t listen.
Because she had to see him, one more time. Crossing her own timeline would be too dangerous, so it couldn’t be either of her Doctors. She didn’t know the temperament of any others. So that only left one. And, by chance (or fate? She wasn’t sure what she believed anymore), it happened to be the one that might just be able to understand what she was going through.
The Doctor looked out to the ocean from his bench. The sun, about to set, cast long shadows across the rock-strewn beach below the cliff. From his high vantage point, he could see families screaming and splashing as the tide rolled them around. They were so fiercely brave, humans. Always throwing themselves into fun just to feel the rush. So breakable. On the sand below, a man in odd black clothing read a newspaper, hat down low over his face.
His musings were interrupted by the sound of footsteps coming near.
“Can I sit here?” He looked up to see a young woman, in a large jacket not unlike his own, smiling down at him.
“I’m not very great company, but you’re welcome to stay.” He said with a weak smile. Clara noticed the emptiness in his eyes, the fakeness of the cheer in his voice. Settling down, she noticed that he looked tired. Exhausted. As if he hadn’t slept in years.
“How long has it been since you slept?”
“Well, that’s rude.” He tried to scrape up a joking tone, but his mind was spinning. How long had it been? “I’m somewhat of an insomniac. Few days.” Not that a few days was long for him. More like a few months.
“And what do you do with all that time? Mope?”
“I’m not moping!”
“And I’m not human.” Clara said, and for a second she saw him tense before he relaxed back, faking nonchalance. He must be more tired than she thought.
“What is there, besides humans?” He softly mused, looking back at the water.
“A lot.” She whispered, and she reveled in the way his face froze in surprise. “There’s Zygons. Weeping Angels. Silence, but you wouldn’t know about them yet. Time Lords.” At the last two words, the Doctor jumped up, sonic pointed at her, and back away a few feet.
“Who are you?” He asked in a low voice, and even though Clara knew the Doctor wouldn’t hurt her, fear trickled down her spine. Her heart sank even lower as it came to her that this was not her Doctor, that he didn’t know her. It was ripped completely to shreds as she remembered that none of them knew her now. Before she knew what was happening, she was shaking with sobs.
The Doctor looked at the crying woman, startled. The sonic had read her as perfectly human, but she knew about other planets and species. Specifically, she knew about the Time Lords. And there was a… not a scent, exactly, but a very similar sense that his species had. She smelled of the Time Vortex with a hint of something weird that made his nose itch. He immediately thought of Jack, but it wasn’t him; the smell of wrongness wasn’t as pronounced. It was the smell of something uncomfortable, but not repulsive. Who was she travelling with?
Another sob broke his train of thought. Whoever she was, she was hurting, and he was the Doctor. Slowly he lowered the sonic and sat down next to her, surprised when she leaned into his touch instead of away from it. Softly, he wrapped his arms around the stranger, and her sobs became muffled as she twisted closer to him and buried her face in his jacket.
Clara knew it was stupid. This man, this Doctor, didn’t care about her any more than he would any other crying girl on a cliff. These arms were not the ones she craved to hug her again. This tenderness was a show over his confusion. But she didn’t care. For then, the Doctor was holding her again, stroking her hair softly and murmuring comfort, and she didn’t care.
Ten minutes later, the woman in his arms calmed and stilled. Bewildered, the Doctor gently pulled away, looking into her tearstained face. It shocked him, really, the way she looked at him. Obviously she knew him, but it seemed he didn’t know her. The image of Professor River Song’s face flashed before his eyes, but he tossed it aside. The Professor had obviously wanted him to know her. This person had the desperate look of someone who had lost hope.
“I’m sure you already know this, but it feels rude not to say it.” The Doctor carefully scooted to give her space on the bench and extended his hand. “I’m the Doctor.” The woman shook his hand, the glimmer of fresh tears in her eyes as she did so, but still smiling. Humans had an odd smile sometimes. Like they were sad. But then why would they smile?
“Clara Oswald.” She said, before a laugh escaped her. “Sorry for the weird first impression.” She took a deep breath, watching as his face tensed for a second, as if half remembering something.
“Have we--”
“--Met before, yes. Twice, once with this face. But don’t worry about that just yet.” She settled herself into a more comfortable position, facing him. “It was a really stupid idea to come here. I just needed to see you again, and I couldn’t cross my own timestream, so--”
“Clara.” Her name brought up another round of tears, which she quickly blinked away. The way he said it was so different, and not just the accent-- it was more like the way the Doctor had said it when they had first started travelling. Near the end of their adventures, though he threw it around often, her name had seemed to be something especially precious.
“Yeah?” She said, trying to sound casual. She couldn’t tell if it worked.
“How do you know me? In the future?” He swallowed hard. “Clara, did I die? I need to ask, even if you say you can’t tell me. Is that why you had to go backwards in time to see me again? Because you saw me really die?” His breathing all but stopped as the question hung between them, Clara looking more thoughtful then resigned.
“That’s not why, no, though you did die.” He felt like he had been punched in the gut, and he was surprised when she let out a little laugh. “Not for long, though. You never do.”
“That’s impossible.”
“That’s my job.” The Doctor stared at her a bit longer before breaking out into a huge grin that quickly slid off of his face.
“I’m not supposed to know this. How did I even manage--- no. You shouldn’t be telling me this. I should go.” He went to stand up.
“Please!”
Sometimes things happened in the wrong order. A premonition, remembering backwards. A ripple through time, a heartbeat ringing in the ears of its creator. Whatever you liked to call it. But when Clara cried out, his hearts seemed to rip in half, as if she was linked to them, as if the universe needed them to be here, at this point, together.
The Doctor sat back down.
Clara caught her breath, which had fled as soon as he got up, and offered him a small smile. Gently, she placed her right hand on his cheek, looking into those eyes that could tell her everything.
“Oh, my clever boy.” She sighed. “You never see yourself clearly. Of course you found a way. We worked it out. And yeah, you were a bit peeved that you’d wasted a regeneration to impress a girl--” The Doctor snorted, but didn’t deny it-- “but it was fine. You were… amazing.”
Gingerly, as if it were a live snake, the Doctor took her hand from his face and pressed a kiss to it. He had no idea who she was, but it was obvious that he would eventually. And she had saved him, at least for a while. He would travel! Travel, like he always did, before he died. Maybe he should see the Trojan War, or explore Pangea. He could check up on some people, some old friends. But that seemed too final. And how would he even see some of them? Sarah Jane, easy, and Martha. But Donna--
“Please.” He said, impulsivity charging through him. “What happens to Donna? Do I ever say?” Clara recoiled slightly, and he dropped her hand in case she wanted to pull back further, but she stayed still after her initial reaction.
“That’s actually why I came.” His hearts dropped. “Well, not Donna explicitly. Noble, correct? I don’t know too much about her. Things here and there. She gets married. You see Wilfred again, her grandfather, right? You have so many adventures left.” She watched his face turn from determination to hope, then resignation. She took a deep breath. “It hurts, doesn’t it? Having someone forget you?”
“It does.”
“And how do you cope with that? How can you possibly?” He felt like she was trying to say something through the intensity of her stare, but he couldn’t possibly see what she was getting at.
“I don’t know.” He answered. Her face dropped, and he felt compelled to explain a bit more. “Think about them, I guess. To make up for how they can’t think of you. It’s silly, really, but it works for me. The first few weeks were… rough. I was chasing ghosts. Talking to holograms and hallucinations.” He looked out at the sea, at the screaming and laughing families. “But life goes on, I guess.”
“Thank you.” Clara shifted, and the Doctor’s gaze swept back to her. She scratched her ear, thinking how weird the waves sounded without her heartbeat, and she saw his attention go to her hand. Then her ear. Then her neck. He waited for a moment, frozen, as she slowly put her hand down. “Doctor?”
He looked up at her, concern and fear written over his face, and she got it. Ah. Right. No pulse.
He leaned over to her as she jumped away, smoothing out her clothes.
“Thank you for the talk--”
“Clara, you don’t have a pulse--”
“--but I really must be going now.”
“--I need to make sure you’re--” Clara strode forward and placed a hand over his mouth. She was still warm, which confused the Doctor to no end, but explained how he hadn’t noticed it sooner. Listening now, he only heard his two hearts.
“I’m fine.” He nodded, and she took her hand off of his mouth. Swallowing, the Doctor reached out his arm (to hug her? to make her stay?), and she shook his hand firmly.
“Goodbye, Doctor.”
“Goodbye, Clara Oswald.” He felt her small hand fall from his grip, and she walked away towards a diner he hadn’t noticed. She placed her hand on the front door, moving as if to push in, before looking back with that curious smile.
“Oh, and check your pockets.” And with that, the door swung open and she disappeared inside. The Doctor looked in his pockets, searching through them thoroughly (they were, after all, bigger on the inside), when a noise took him off guard. It was very faint, as if muted, but distinctly there. As he looked up in shock, the diner faded from his view, taking the TARDIS brake noise with it, and his hand found a folded piece of paper. He read it and rushed to the cliffside again, scanning the beach below, but the man in the bulky dress with the newspaper had vanished.
The Doctor slammed the doors to the TARDIS shut, relieved to be done with his strange mission. Unzipping his black coat, he threw it onto one of the seats, taking off his hat in the process. He left the sunglasses on, though. They suited him.
He had left the newspaper in the trash, as he had long since gotten bored with it; it had taken him three minutes to read, even dragging it out. He had memorized it front to back and was starting to make a wordsearch out of the first sentences in his mind when he had gotten the signal.
Sighing, he took off his suit jacket, throwing it onto the TARDIS columns next to him, and looked at the strange note once more. He didn’t quite remember how he had gotten it, just that he had been told to find it in his pocket. He supposed he would always wonder.
Doctor,
I know this is going to be very confusing for you. It’s quite timey-wimey, to borrow a phrase of yours. But I need you to do something for me, and you can’t ask questions. Your entire future is at stake.
I just met up with you, and in our conversation I said a lot of things I should not have. If you know them before they happen, fixed points will fall apart. So, I have devised a plan.
Put on a strong disguise and go to the beach off of Ptósi Fýllon Avenue at 11:00 am on the 23rd of November, 1997. Go down the cliff and onto the sand, but don’t stray too far. I have included a special set of earplugs that will account for your good hearing. I need you to read a newspaper that will be waiting for you there and find a place to sit.
I will be having a conversation with past you up on the cliff face. You must cross your time stream to make sure you don’t remember this. You must not look for me. You must not turn around. You may leave when you hear the noise of a TARDIS taking flight-- the earplugs are designed to let you hear it. This doesn’t mean I have a TARDIS-- I just know you get distracted sometimes and need a signal you won’t forget.
I’m sorry, but this needs to happen. Soon, you’ll forget it even did. Get rid of this note before that happens. It will be like we never spoke.
Thank you.
Love,
A friend
P. S. Before you go, see Donna again. At least once.
