Bucky could only stare and wince as his son swung by just his jaws, a good ten feet above the ground. It wasn’t like the werewolf pup wouldn’t just bounce back from a fall like that but overall Bucky preferred to avoid things like that. And there weren’t many materials made to withstand werewolves so he was at a loss. They certainly had an abundance of trees around the property, and Connor seemed to enjoy them for a multitude of reasons.

     “Well, metal would just hurt the kid. So unless it was a jungle gym made        outta oak or some other really hard wood... maybe the trees will be fine?”

Dom was... complicated. Bucky still didn’t know, overall, very much about the demon at all. Much of his history was a mystery and surely the demon did that on purpose. Bucky had gathered certain scraps here and there, tidbits the demon had allowed, or scraps Dom had accidentally let slip here and there. Either way, Bucky was almost certain that it wasn’t a happy or pleasant story. Dom himself had said many times how horrible of a person he was, usually when trying to scare Bucky off. But the engineer had figured out his game by now.

Slowly, hesitantly, he sat on the couch next to the demon. He sighed, unsure of where to start, hat exactly to say. Dealing with Dom could be exactly like dealing with a cornered animal, never sure when he would lash out or simply make a break for it. But Bucky was an empathetic person at heart, and despite all of their clashing, he had truly come to care about Dom, in some strange twist of fate. Gently Bucky laid his hand over the demon’s. 

     “I can’t promise I’m the best judge of character, or the most moral person.         And I don’t know nearly all of your story. Maybe you have done some         truly unforgiveable things in the past, but... isn’t change the whole point         of living? Even in the short time you’ve been here, I’ve definitely seen it.         You’ve come a long way already, and that’s gotta count for somethin’.”

Bucky didn’t really have a response to that. It was sad, of course, depressing that someone couldn’t even count on their own family. But Bucky couldn’t help the small warmth that sparked in his chest at the thought of Maya holding him in such high regard. He’d known they’d grown close over movie bonding sessions and debriefings spent making fun of other agents, but it meant everything to him whenever someone told him so. Instead of floundering for words he simply pulled her in for a hug, resting his cheek on her head.

That was what they always told themselves, wasn’t it? That they had tried their best, it wasn’t their fault, they’d done all they could do. It still didn’t make up for the damage caused or the civilian lives put into danger or even ended. Despite knowing it could only lead to pain, Bucky kept track, as much as he could, wanted to remember each and every one they didn’t save. It was all he could do after the fact. They didn’t deserve to get caught up in their mess, didn’t deserve what happened to them. And while logically, Thor may be right, Bucky took the hits personally.

     “We can’t know that for sure,” he replied roughly. “We can always do better.”

Not really, actually! Being in tight spaces wasn’t really something that happened to him too often, and he was typically frozen for much of his time that he actually spend in the small style of cryogenic tube. It wasn’t the close walls that truly bothered him, and so these days while he wouldn’t necessarily seek something like that out, it doesn’t affect him enough to affect his work or actions.
