The Making Of Humanity, 2023's Best Puzzle Game
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Earlier this year, we spent time with tha ltd. and Enhance Experience, the creative teams behind Humanity, for a documentary on the game’s development.
While, on its surface, Humanity is a puzzle game about leading groups of people to a goal, as its name implies, its story wrestles with ideas of what it means to be human, the nature of groups, and why we always seem to resort to violence. Humanity’s story reflects real-world events, showing us the paths we’re currently on.
Watch The Documentary:
[embedded content]
“Soon after we began making Humanity, a number of big events and movements broke out around the world,” Enhance founder and CEO Tetsuya Mizuguchi tells us. “There were human rights movements, the Hong Kong protests, [and] then there was the pandemic. And war soon followed in Ukraine. We had no idea how quickly and deeply AI would infiltrate our society either. I think all these things found their way into the core of Humanity. That question, for example, ‘What is humanity? What is human nature?’ We would often talk about how people, looked at individually, are good. There are so many wonderful people out there. But when they become a group, or a nation, or even just big groups, at that level, something happens. It’s like a different switch gets flipped. And what you see there, that is what we’re trying to depict in Humanity.”
Watch above or over on Game Informer’s YouTube channel to see the full documentary about the making of Humanity. “Violence Is Inevitable” speaks to the core creative team, including Mizuguchi and tha creative director Yugo Nakamura, about the project’s origins, its complications and lengthy development cycle, and how it came to show us the nature of humanity.

HUMANITY, which was recently shown at “The Unlimited Full Course,” is the product of a collaboration between Yugo Nakamura, Tetsuya Mizuguchi & Cornelius. It has been in development since 2017, and Yugo Nakamura himself has experimented with the ideas & themes behind the game in METAFIVE’s music video for “環境と心理.”

Earlier this year, Yugo Nakamura's Humanity, considered by many as a cancelled project, resurfaced with unexpected pedigree. As one who has lived for years in anticipation, what I encountered in the trial version was no less than what I had expected: a high-concept puzzle game brimming with style, substance, meaning, and humour. In October 2021, I pointed out the obvious when I described it as the most bizarre blend imaginable of Lemmings, Intelligent Qube, The Last Guy, Noby Noby Boy and ChuChu Rocket!. Enhance was not impervious to these and similar comparisons and decided to borrow the aesthetic of Japanese Playstation-era TV advertisements to craft their own video announcement of the game's official launch date and day one availability for PS Plus subscribers. Leave it to a third-party studio to adequately celebrate the rich history of the Playstation brand.

WEEK 13 - NEW MEDIA
The “futuristic world first appeared in the work of Wolfgang Weingart and April Greiman in the 1980s, the focus on a ‘digital aesthetic’ greatly increased in the early 1990s”, as stated in Graphic Design A New History. This new technological world was new to many, but it soon became a way to present  “the visionary worlds depicted in video games”. As technology became more and more common to the world, there was a “rapid acceptance to the technologically influenced design”. Designers became creative in their works and soon were able to leave an impact on this new world of digital aesthetic. One example is the work of Japanese web designer, Yugo Nakamura. His “Design and the Elastic Mind” was displayed in the Museum of Modern Art’s 2008 exhibition. “The exhibition carried on the museum’s tradition of presenting shows that celebrate technological change on an aesthetic as well as functional level. This exhibition was an informative piece of work that was designed with different shapes, lines, and sounds that were present when navigating the website. Although this type of design was odd or confusing to many at first, it became the new now very quick. The digital aesthetic is all around us today and is so common we don’t even stop to think about how much it has evolved from the 1980s when we first saw this aesthetic, to now.

Streaming giant Prime Video will release “Like a Dragon,” a live-action series adaptation of the SEGA game franchise “Yakuza Like a Dragon.”
The six-part crime-suspense-action series is directed by Take Masaharu (“100 Yen Love”) and Takimoto Kengo (“Kamen Teacher”) and stars Takeuchi Ryoma (multiple “Kamen Rider” titles) as the lead character, Kiryu Kazuma.
It will upload to Prime Video in two batches of three episodes on Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, with subtitled and dubbed versions in 30 languages.
The series’ story is set in two time periods, 1995 and 2005, and follows the life, childhood friends and the repercussions of the decisions of a fearsome and peerless Yakuza warrior with a strong sense of justice, duty, and humanity. The screenplay and story are by Sean Crouch and Nakamura Yugo, with a Japanese screenplay by Yoshida Yasuhiro and Yamada Kana.
Released in 2005 by SEGA, the “Yakuza” game series was positioned as an entertaining game for adults and found massive fanfare among its target audience. The series “Like a Dragon: Yakuza” depicts the lives of fierce yet passionate gangsters and people living in a huge entertainment district, Kamurochō, a fictional district modeled after the violent Shinjuku ward’s Kabukichō, that acts as the backdrop of the gameplay.
The series “showcases modern Japan and the dramatic stories of these intense characters, such as the legendary Kazuma Kiryu, that games in the past have not been able to explore,” Prime Video said.
Production is by The Fool. Executive producers are Erik Barmack, Roberto Grande and Joshua Long.
“I have poured out my heart, soul, and the experience that I have garnered over 35 years into ‘Like a Dragon: Yakuza’,” said director Take.
“The unfettered appeal for Japanese content from within Japan and other parts of the world has been growing exponentially. While Prime Video Japan continues to offer a variety of content across genres, adapting an internationally popular game franchise that has such deep resonance and layered characters presents a unique charm and makes for an extremely compelling watch,” said James Farrell, head of international originals, Amazon MGM Studios.
“Since the day I first put pen to paper on the original ‘Yakuza’ script, I’ve never once thought about revisiting any of my work on the series. It’s because I understand all too well the challenges and hardships that come with remaking a finished title. However, if I were ever sent to the past through some kind of cosmic joke, this is the experience I’d want to create. If I had to go through the wringer anyhow, I’d want to make the most engaging versions of Kamurochō and Kazuma Kiryu I could —and this show has it all,” said Yokoyama Masayoshi, head of Ryugagotoku Studio and executive producer. “While the games let you experience their world through the subjective lens, this adaptation will be the ultimately objective way to enjoy the show. I have no doubt that fans of the series will be drawn to how it brings the games to life and adds new surprises. Newcomers, I’m sure will find themselves invested simply in the gritty realism of the show.”
