probably shouldve known i would inevitably stop vibing with derap considering one of the main things he tells the fandom aside from the fact hes not gay is to stop obsessing over them so much meanwhile i actively encourage that kind of thing

one thing that's really hard to explain to people who specifically have only heard about alters in the simplified (and largely incorrect) way, is how alters and fronting actually works.

the popular (unfortunately) general understanding is that these parts exist as separate entities, and that they somehow have separate consciousnesses from eachother. this is almost entirely wrong.

i feel like a better way to explain it is to just state the truth, that there is only one consciousness at all times, with dissociative barriers that affect it (emotional, amnesia, etc.). the person with alters only feels like different people, because that's what the disorder they have does. alters aren't actually some special bonus thing that exists exclusively in people with complex dissociative disorders, they're just the brain making things appear to be different identities in one body. it's similar to depersonalization, but more severe and complex (obviously).

this is why "what XYZ does when not fronting" posts are so nonsensical; it's simply impossible. if alters are not fronting / part of the active consciousness, they just aren't there. some try to explain it as the alters "being asleep/unconscious" but in reality they just... aren't anything. they're not actual separate people in your brain.

TL;DR: alters don't become you. you become your alters.

Part of me really wants to join a self ship server to start making some friends. But there's 2 reasons why I never will:

1) I never know how active a server is gonna be. I don't want to join a dead/quiet one because then that defeats the point of joining

And 2) [the very main reason] Servers like these tend to have a lot of drama going on in them. And I am not willing to touch that shit with a 50ft pole. Even if there isn't any current drama, it's almost guaranteed down the line that there will be. Especially with something like self shipping as the main topic, which tends to be such a personal thing.
