How to Monetize Your Cover Songs on YouTube
Tumblr media
Making cover songs on YouTube isn't just a way to share your talent; it can also be a lucrative endeavor. With the right approach, you can turn your passion for music into a steady source of income. This guide will show you various methods to monetize your cover songs on YouTube, from ad revenue and affiliate marketing to fan funding and live performances.
1. Ad Revenue:
Once your channel meets YouTube’s monetization criteria, you can start earning from ad revenue. Here's how to maximize this income stream:
Monetization Criteria: Ensure your channel has at least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours in the past 12 months to join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).
Enable Ads: Turn on monetization for your videos through the YouTube Studio. You can choose from different ad formats like skippable video ads, non-skippable video ads, and display ads.
Engaging Content: Create engaging content that keeps viewers watching longer. Higher watch times can lead to more ad impressions and increased revenue.
2. Affiliate Marketing:
Promote products related to your music production, such as microphones, headphones, and software. Here’s how to get started with affiliate marketing:
Join Affiliate Programs: Sign up for affiliate programs from companies like Amazon Associates, Sweetwater, or B&H Photo. These programs offer a commission on sales generated through your affiliate links.
Product Reviews: Create videos reviewing music equipment and include your affiliate links in the description. Be honest and thorough in your reviews to build trust with your audience.
Tutorials and Gear Lists: Include affiliate links in tutorials and gear lists. For example, create a "My Home Studio Setup" video and link to the equipment you use.
3. Sponsorships:
Partner with brands that align with your channel’s niche. Sponsorships can provide significant income, especially if you have a sizable and engaged audience. Here’s how to secure sponsorships:
Identify Potential Sponsors: Look for brands that offer products or services relevant to your channel. Reach out to companies that provide music equipment, software, or services for musicians.
Professional Pitch: Create a professional media kit with your channel statistics, audience demographics, and examples of past work. Craft a compelling pitch highlighting how the sponsorship will benefit the brand.
Sponsored Content: Develop sponsored content that integrates the brand naturally. This could be product placements, dedicated review videos, or shout-outs within your covers.
4. Merchandising:
Create and sell your own merchandise, such as T-shirts, posters, and other branded items. Here’s how to get started with merchandising:
Design and Production: Use platforms like Teespring, Merchbar, or Spreadshirt to design and produce your merchandise. These platforms handle production, shipping, and customer service.
Promote Your Merchandise: Mention your merchandise in your videos, include links in your descriptions, and promote it on social media. Showcase your products in action, like wearing your branded T-shirt in a video.
Limited Editions: Create limited-edition items to create urgency and exclusivity. This can boost sales and engage your most loyal fans.
5. Fan Funding:
Platforms like Patreon allow your fans to support you directly. Offer exclusive content, behind-the-scenes access, and other perks to incentivize donations. Here’s how to use fan funding effectively:
Create a Patreon Account: Set up a Patreon account and create different membership tiers with various benefits. Offer perks like exclusive covers, early access to videos, and personal thank-you notes.
Promote Your Patreon: Regularly mention your Patreon in your videos and include links in your descriptions. Explain the benefits of becoming a patron and how their support helps you create more content.
Engage with Patrons: Provide consistent and exclusive content to your patrons. Engage with them through patron-only live streams, Q&A sessions, and polls to make them feel valued.
6. Music Streaming Platforms:
Distribute your covers on music streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. This can provide an additional revenue stream from streaming royalties. Here’s how to get started:
Digital Distribution Services: Use services like DistroKid, TuneCore, or CD Baby to distribute your covers to streaming platforms. These services handle the licensing and distribution process.
Metadata and Tags: Ensure your songs have accurate metadata and tags. This helps listeners find your covers and improves your discoverability on streaming platforms.
Promote Your Streams: Encourage your YouTube audience to stream your covers on music platforms. Create playlists, share links, and include streaming links in your video descriptions.
7. Live Performances:
Host live streaming sessions or virtual concerts. Platforms like YouTube Live, Twitch, and Stageit allow you to earn money through ticket sales, donations, and super chats. Here’s how to make the most of live performances:
Set Up Your Stream: Ensure you have a good internet connection, quality audio, and video equipment. Use streaming software like OBS Studio or Streamlabs to manage your stream.
Promote Your Event: Announce your live performances in advance and promote them on social media, your YouTube channel, and your email newsletter. Create engaging promotional materials like posters and teaser videos.
Monetization Options: Enable monetization options like super chats and donations on YouTube Live. On platforms like Twitch, use subscriptions, bits, and donations to earn revenue.
8. Licensing Your Covers:
Properly licensing your cover songs ensures you can monetize them legally. Here’s how to handle licensing:
Mechanical Licenses: Obtain mechanical licenses for your covers. Services like Harry Fox Agency and Loudr can help you secure these licenses.
Sync Licenses: If you want to use your cover in visual media, obtain a sync license. Contact the song's publisher to get the necessary permissions.
Cover Song Licensing Services: Use platforms like We Are The Hits and Soundrop to license your cover songs. These services handle the legalities and allow you to monetize your covers on YouTube.
Monetizing your cover songs on YouTube is a multi-faceted process that requires strategic planning and engagement with your audience. By diversifying your income streams through ad revenue, affiliate marketing, sponsorships, merchandising, fan funding, music streaming platforms, live performances, and proper licensing, you can turn your passion for music into a sustainable career. Remember, consistency and quality are key to building a loyal audience and maximizing your revenue potential.

Rozzi Crane - Creep
youtube
Creep by Radiohead is a darkly beautiful song and very few cover artists do it justice. Rozzi's version pays homage to Radiohead and then catapults the song into the stratosphere. She IS fu**** special.

This is a love letter to the first Mystery Dungeon games, as Red Rescue Team came out on the Nintendo Switch online service for Game Boy Advance last month. I've had a lot of fun replaying this game's Game Boy Advance version, so if you can, I seriously recommend playing it. The remake on the switch of this game isn't bad; it added a lot of stuff for the better (The cute inventory art is something I wish was in the earlier PMD games), But it cannot beat the original games.
This time, I practised making smoother transitions and title cards! The latter took much time to implement (video editing is no joke). I did my best to make the title cards look like the in-game text boxes.
Here is the finished piece:
