I finally watched the hamilton workshop fully through and as much as I enjoyed it I'm genuinely so happy they changed some of the rhymes and rhythm. Cause yall, some of those weren't it. 😭. Like "You look... bad" bruh??? And also there's a lot more cursing in the work shop. I can see why they got rid of a lot if it because it puts more emphasis on times when they do curse. All things said, it was a fun watch.

btw about Neil Gaiman I periodically agree with the 'Neil Gaiman is annoying' stuff bc I feel like both he and Amanda Palmer seem like people who I would go insane stuck in a room with bc we have very different ideas about art and suchlike. and I also do think that the career trajectory he's on lately is cynically redoing his greatest hits and pretending that was the dream all along when it clearly was not. which is at best meh.
having said which
as far as I can tell by far the most common complaint about Neil Gaiman is "Snow, Glass, Apples is problematic/gross/it's got incest and rape and frames the child as the aggressor"
which strikes me as a weird complaint to pull out of a 40 year body of work tbh when that short story is pretty clearly coming from a place of 'how far can I push this'. like you don't have to like the story. I don't really like the story. but it is. a horror story.
like and this is the thing with particularly 90s alt horror right? a lot of the interest is in transgression and sitting in the worst possible perspective and seeing what happens if you pull those strings. like I really like Clive Barker for example but there's a good chunk of his short stories that I'm like I'm not picking up what you're putting down Clive this seems Kinda Off. but that willingness to write some trite or Bad Message horror fiction that doesn't land is imo a side effect of being willing to try writing uncomfortable and unpleasant fiction at all. which is what horror is for, among other things, it's for creating discomfort as a form of catharsis or engagement.
like I am not a huge fan of the type of sex-horror that pops up in a lot of Gaiman's work and other contemporary horror writers - to me I don't find it upsetting or horny it just ends up feeling kind of edgy and tryhard - but I'm also a bit like. it does seem like a lot of people's beef with Neil Gaiman is that In The 90s He Was A Horror Writer
and this approach to Problematic Horror in Snow, Glass, Apples I find kind of microcosmic of how The Discourse often approaches art in this kind of 1:1 way. if you write a story which seems to line up with rape apologia it can only be because you agree with it. if you write a story about transphobia you're a transphobe. if you write a story that makes me genuinely uncomfortable you're attacking me.
but artwork, especially art like horror that's not necessarily trying to provoke enjoyment as its main response, is necessarily hit and miss. and if what you're shooting for is discomfort then whether it works, falls flat or goes too far incredibly depends on your audience. and making good art - as in art that makes its audience think, art that opens the audience up to discomfort and catharsis and sticks with them and changes them - requires the space to experiment and tbh the space to fuck up. like they aren't all going to be winners and they certainly aren't all going to work for you as a singular audience.
personally I don't see the appeal of Snow, Glass, Apples, less cause it's nasty and more cause it's hack. ooh an edgy monstrous version of a fairy tale where there's lots of rape and cannibalism? you're soooo original Neil. but like. that's fine. I don't really vibe with like 70% of Neil Gaiman stuff I've read but I still like Neil Gaiman because the stuff that works for me really works for me.
idk I think there's a lot of folk on this website who shouldn't interact with horror cause they clearly aren't interested in being horrified. that's not everyone who dislikes Snow, Glass, Apples, but it's a real undercurrent to a lot of the criticism and tbh this kinda vibe is shit for art. making standout art What Is Good also requires being ready to make art which stands out for the wrong reasons. sometimes they'll be the same art to different people.
#red said#not to Cancel Culture this but isabelle fall springs to mind in a lot of how folks talk about stuff like this#like she wrote a transgressive piece exploring her own negative feelings about transness and her anger around a transphobic trope#and she made something which i found really resonant and interesting#and she got torn apart for it because it Might From Some Angles Agree With Transphobia#and I'm not making a direct comparison. because i think attack helicopter is a really GOOD story and i think SGA is gratuitous and hack#but that's the thing right? transgression and discomfort and speaking about unpleasant things in an openended way are KEY#to making art that engages directly with your own pains and angers and discomforts#and that's hard to mediate tbh. but it's also very necessary.#i think as well thinking about Gaiman this is also a thought I've often had about Amanda Palmer#who over the years has written a lot of songs about things i find genuinely uncomfortable or offensive.#and i can engage with 'it's fucked up to tell your ex they transed their gender At You' or 'your partner's suicide is not about you' bc yeah#but#you can't celebrate someone for making confessional music then get mad because you don't like everything they confess#if you only take about your socially acceptable thoughts it's not really confessional is it?#if you only talk about discomforting things that people are comfortable hearing about its not really discomforting#and you can only really discern what's Good Transgressive and what's Damaging Transgressive through doing i think#so if you want challenging art you are going to have to get some art which challenges you and you go hmm no i still disagree#is what i think#so yeah you can hate the artwork but when an artist is specifically setting out to make challenging art it's weird to hate them#for making 50 pieces of art you like and 1 you hate

Just thinking about how much Robin Hobb had to do to force her OTP back together at the end of Fools Fate and being salty. It required:
-Burrich to be depicted as a decrepit old man when he’s like in his 50s and conveniently die, gifting Fitz with his family (!) as his last wish
-Fitz to finally realize and accept what “no limits” means with Beloved after an entire trilogy where this is a central theme and raise him from the dead because he refuses to live in a world that he isn’t part of, and then for this to not matter at all because Beloved decides actually he’s just an obstacle to Fitz’s true love Molly (?!) and leaves
-Fitz not being allowed to choose what he wants, because when he tries to choose Beloved he’s told no that’s not actually what’s good for you
-Molly not being able to choose if she would be ok with her ex bringing along his queerplatonic life partner because it’s already been decided for her that of course she wouldn’t
-Fitz getting lost in a Skill pillar for a month so he can’t have a rational discussion with Beloved about it as Prilkop the conveniently located agent of Clerres tells him all about how of course their Path is finished and staying by his Catalyst will only do harm
-Prilkop convincing Beloved that he should go back to Clerres, a place where he was physically and sexually abused before running away, because apparently it’s his job to fix them, and this actually working (!!!)
-Literally everyone in Fitz’s life, up to and including Burrich and Mollys eldest son who Fitz never speaks to on page again after this, pushing him to pursue her and telling him not to take no for an answer
-Molly and Burrich (actually Nettle) being granted Withywoods and a noble title by Patience so they no longer have to deal with the obvious issue of the class divide
-Molly magically accepting that he let her believe he was dead for 16 years and abandoned their daughter because he was upset she married someone else because her role in this book is to be his prize for completing the quest
-Neither Fitz nor Molly ever mentioning or even thinking about Burrich, his foster father and major formative influence and her husband of many years and father of her sons, except for a few passing references
So yeah, in a series where the characters generally act in believable ways even when it’s frustrating, this whole plot was just contrived as hell

so tired of being a shitty bandaid for my parents' loneliness. like have u ever considered you passed your curse to me and some days i feel so lonely it's like i can't breathe around the emptiness in my chest????
#my dad is like#you can't just be in your room all the time then what's the point of you living here if ill be sitting here all alone then#and im like bhai what#mom also says this to me she always wanted to sit and rant and she used to say you never talk to me#both of these people don't even fucking get it that they're not even interested in me listening to me#mom just wants a sounding board for her venting and dad just wants someone to pretend everything is okay and happy all the time and#the only important things in life is the immediate present and food and making money and stuff#i swear this is why i feel so ????? about myself my identity like no i can't describe myself#because there is no myself there is just a white sheet of paper where people can write whatever they want#im so tired man#why can't they just go and live with each other and leave us kids out of it 😭#like i genuinely am getting teary eyed about such a small thing but god. i want to have my own life so bad. im sick of feeling all these#complicated emotions guilt and anger and pity and obligation and duty like just god pls fuck off#people my age are so fucking mature and put together than me so confident so clear about their path#have friends partners breakups parties just so many new memories#and im just stuck.#and im fine with it now because i get it studying is really important and this is quite basic requirement to be perfect at#atleast my syllabus to survive in this industry#but then. let me do that only. please don't make me pretend to like you like spending time with you and everything#ive hated you for like. idk 14 whole years. since the first time you hit mom in front of me#i remember it so well like my childhood broke that day you slammed her into a wall for some stupid fight and her hair was all messy and#untied and you shouted so loud i thought surely everyone can hear. and then you left to roam around the city at night with your friends#i remember this because my mom and my sister sent me to check up on you with the excuse of a painting of a parrot that i had made#i didn't understand anything back then#but yeah fuck you fuck you fuck you for being so fucking delusional thinking i love you or something#ive prayed to god that you die and i still do#it would directly mean 4 people being happy#anyway#dni#this was meant to be fun and short lol fuck

So sorry if this is bothering you but so curious as well... why do you hate Guts?
Thanks for your time ❤
you’re not bothering me!
I think the simplest way to answer this is with one of Olivia’s own lyrics from pretty isn’t pretty when she sings “none of it matters and none of it ends” because. That is kind of her whole ethos about how life works. She believes that! And so her work, to me, is profoundly cynical and self-absorbed because it can’t point to anything bigger (none of it matters) so it revolves purely around her own feelings. It won’t ever situate itself in a wider picture. And I love whining in a song tbh. I love when an artist captures those uglier emotions —the discontent, the restlessness, the irritation, the blandness and staleness of it all and the railing against it—because those are all part of the human experience. I am continually shocked—it is shoCKING—by how many negative emotions I can and do experience over and over again. But it is thankfully against the backdrop of reality. My bad moods are something that can be so unpleasant to feel and so ugly to witness—I wrestle with how ugly and small my suffering is—but there is a way in which, all discourse about the validity of any and all of my feelings accounted for, those aren’t real. Just symptoms of my suffering and sometimes my convalescence (lol, love a symptom of convalescence) but reality is still always so much realer. It’s always ready to break in a million times a day; the beauty and sturdiness of reality, the texture of existence, as Flannery O’Connor once said, is always there and with enough time (and with patience and help and love) I can get back to contact with it. Not just the state of my own mind full of bitterness and worry and pain, endlessly stewing in its own unhappiness.
I am not good at that, it takes a lot to get me there. But I guess my point is—to circle back—Olivia’s music doesn’t try and doesn’t want to. Its scope is so narrow, every song no matter how pleasing at first eventually sours (lololololol) because it’s JUST rooted in her own experience, generally her own suffering. And there’s no sharpness or cleverness in the world (she can be both sharp and clever!) that can hide that lack of range. So you hear a song once—for me, it was brutal—-and you’re like YEAH. I recognize this kind of whininess because I’ve felt it before. There is something true to it! But the more she writes the more you watch her do it over and over again (sonically, too, she loves to speak-talk and tbh they’re just sub-par remixes of brutal) the more you start to be like “oh, is that it? We’re not going anywhere with this? There’s no turn or catharsis or bridge or anything that lifts us out of this even for a second?” and it’s just —blegh.
And the thing is there doesn’t even have to be, like, some triumphant girlboss victory where she feels better. I’m not saying her songs are bad because they’re sad and depressing. It’s that they establish no outside contact with reality. They are, for all her clever little film-noir references or whatever, only ever self-referential. And that gets old so fast no matter who is talking.
#yes of course I contrast her with Taylor#Taylor can be beautifully petty and restless and sad and insecure and her songs are never just about her#They are always situated in a broader picture of reality. They go down to the roots of things. Of humanity and love and the human condition#and it’s just. It’s so much bigger. It is not stifling#and that’s the staying power and that’s the inherent hopefulness she has and that’s her desire to know the truth and speak the truth#Even when she’s getting it wrong it’s all still there#anyway it’s funny because Taylor gets accused of what Olivia actually is doing so much more than Olivia#people love to pretend that Taylor is a wallower and self-indulgent#and yes there’s a very human humanity to the expression of her emotions. There IS brattiness there is anger#but the core is so good that those things become what they are —only the endearing and funny trappings of her expression#never the heart#it’s why Taylor wears so well and also why sometimes she is jarring on first listen. You can just hear the dissonance (for me too)#But it’s like that one tweet said. Doesn’t matter if you like a taylor song on first listen. You WILL eventually#and it’s so true. And that’s the quality drawing you in#Olivia (and much of gen z tbh) is kind of the opposite: the humanity is in the trappings#She’s fairly easy to listen to and like ….. at first#the humanity and cleverness and beauty such as they are are on the surface#there’s a deceptive ease and an openness that doesn’t actually lead you anywhere#It leaves you empty because it’s just all kind of built on the fumes of a bad mood tbh#turning off reblogs lol#Anyway thank you for asking and giving me this opportunity to speak#all opinions are mine and that’s what they are. If anyone feels differently more power to you. Go forth and enjoy guts#Just putting all my caveats here

if nothing else u must remember in ur hearts of hearts disposability is the way of our world currently. waste, alienation, isolation, grimdark shounen, all that glaze and polish and bandaids being traded out for prettier bandaids like ai fanart/art and my local university renovating every community structure without ever divesting. you must remember what u see. U have an ability to remember. It is essential u get it back and go back for it, every day, like taking a healing medicine, to remind urself u have the ability to remember and to cease forgetting.

Grim being determined to change fate in TCWGANV to the point that she refuses to accept that she can't save everyone even when she fails vs Grim not trying to change the ending in ALATL but that doesn't mean she's not going to stop saving who she can, even if it isn't everyone
#grim kennet#in tcwganv grim wouldn't hear it that she couldn't save everyone#even when she suffered a loss she would still refuse to believe it wasn't impossible#she would refuse to believe that not everyone can be saved#she would fight constantly#and she would fail time and time again#and then in alatl grim is still determined to save those she can#of course she is. it's in her nature to want to save people#she is kind and compassionate and determined to a fault#and yet now she realizes she can't save everyone#she can't stop the destruction of alderaan and she knows that. so she doesn't even try.#but that doesn't stop her from warning them about the death star. that doesn't stop her from doing her best to save those she can#of course she knows it won't save everyone. but as many as possible. that's what she has to do now#she doesn't save obi wan. she knows she can't#obi wan made his choice anyways. he lets vader kill him. he sacrifices himself#grim still pleads with him. she begs him not to do it#but she knows she can't stop him. she knows she can't save him. and so she doesn't#but that doesn't stop her emotions. that doesn't save her any grief or anger#but she doesn't blame herself or anyone else. she couldn't save him. she didn't try to save him. still she loves him.#she finally learned that she can't save everyone. she's not going to try and save everyone anymore#but that doesn't mean she won't save all she can.#finally she realizes what that promise she made meant. finally she realizes what it really means to be a jedi#you can't save everyone. but you can save as many as you can.#anyways i love grim and i love when she learns things and grows#fic: the clone wars gets a new victim#fic: as long as there's light

I actually like that ppl find me intimidating. It weeds out the wrong sort of people. I don’t want nor do I need everyone to like me or be my friend. I’m good with a few ride or dies.
It’s crazy the amount of ppl I see who have all these ‘friends’ but no one to actually go to when they need a shoulder. I refuse to do that.
People will say I’m mean but really I only get like that if I’m provoked and if you intentionally start pressing the wrong buttons. I just have been through so much I finally got tired of being a push over and now I say exactly what needs to be said.
The longer you stay quiet the more ppl are gonna use you. Put you down and walk all over you. I refuse that shit. I don’t give a fuck if you don’t like me for it. God didn’t put me on this earth to please you.

Having sensory issues that you haven't quite registered as proper, real and VALID issues yet can be real interesting. For example;
Me, overwhelmed and fuming with rage and anxiety: How can I fuckity fuck make this better?
*remembers that sunlight and seeing what's outside can make people feel less claustrophobic ergo lowering anxiety*
*forgets that bright lights and colors are a sensory FUCK NO when overwhelmed*

watching a reaction video for encanto and immediately exiting out of it when they dont understand isabela as a character and tear her down the entire time during her song is self care
#listen. i say this as someone who isnt even a big fan of isabella#but damn bro ur really just sitting here not caring about her feelings WHEN THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE MOVIE IS THAT THEYRE ALL NOT OK#SOMETIMES WHEN PPL ARENT OK THEY REDIRECT THEIR ANGER AND WHILE ITS NOT OK YOU CANT JUST ACT LIKE SHES UNREASONABLE AND SPOILED#you cant tell me that isabella doesnt have like. the second worst anxiety in the house. she just hides it bc she has to#the golden child/ scapegoat child dynamic between isabella and mirabel isnt just like. isa being mean for no reason#they both see each other as having it easy because they 'dont have any expectations of them and therefore dont have to try'#its about realizing how hard the other is trying and that they were so much more alike than either realized#isa resented mirabel for being messy and clumsy and imperfect because isa is expected to be the perfect example of her family#she cant mess up she has to always be aware of how others percieve her and cannot show any flaws#mira resents isabella because she is trying so hard constantly to basically make up for simply existing#and despite how hard she tries its never enough. so seeing isa being (seemingly) efortlessly perfect hurts#isa is the standard she can never reach#but the truth is they are both just sisters who have spent their whole lives trying so hard to not admit that they wish they were the other#and that theyre both just people who dont have to justify their existance or pose like some perfect little doll. theyre just people#with flaws and issues and the ability to change and grow#fuck you if you hate isa this is a pro isabella blog now#i cant hear you over the sound of mirabel and isabella working through their trauma together and growing closer as sisters#encanto#mirabel madrigal#isabela madrigal#IVE BEEN SPELLING HER NAME WRONG IN THE TAGS FML#oh well i am NOT fixing that

twirls hair thinking about adaline rozovy and his doomed struggle to live despite really not having a choice in the matter. you will forever be remembered as the weapon of light, hated by your comrades and mourned by your friends. your memory is stained in blood. there are more men you have killed than who you have saved. the world cries for your survival. you are loved.
#.text#adaline rozovy#just thinking about how alisaie has mentioned so many times that she hates heroic sacrifices. she hates it.#alisaie watches the very moment pass where addie decides it is her life for theirs. and they never see her alive again.#and alisaie will never forgive her for this.#never has there been a weapon more loved than she.#which is why alisaie wouldnt be able to hear her name after without feeling so. so angry.#i dont think her grief particularly manifests as anger but in this case.#in the case where she thinks there could have been another way. it is anger. a very sad anger. a very violent one.#i can really only imagine she comes back from the edge of the universe. addie's on her deathbed. and the only thing she can#really do is try not to take her anger out on anyone else. but she cant help it.#i can see it. alphinaud tentatively brings up addie in conversation and alisaie has to hiss at him. dont. dont speak her name.#and if you do as she did i will never forgive you either.#i can imagine its the same with thancred as well. for multiple reasons.#but that idiots guilt complex is so high hes gonna think its his fault. heavensward thancred part 2. electric boogaloo#didnt even think abt how krile probably has so much guilt about that either.... her and addie were close. trauma buddies.#and she is the one who guided zenos to him. she was the one who killed him. probably doesnt sit well in her brain#and tataru. maybe if her armor was just a little stronger. just a little better. then adaline would have ...#oh my god. addie. scions. normal.#normal moments.#she isnt even died shes just suffering elsewhere. hashtag. faking her death (accidentally)
