22 and 12 for the fandom ask game.
12- the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
Eunsoooooooo my babygirl and my child. This is an excuse for me to gush about how her traumas and anxieties are perfectly justified, she was right the entire time and she shouldn't have gotten fridged (yes, I'm using that word) for Shimok to suddenly catalyse.
People get mad at her for having a perfectly normal crush on him - then they're mad that she's a freshly graduated upstart with CPTSD from being endlessly tormented by the press, with a father she looks up to whose only on-screen positive interaction with her is when they're looking at a case together and her only understanding of pleasing others is literally studying/working herself to death.
Everyone forgets that she is someone who has consistently been crying out for help and in need of guidance until it's too late - even the fandom itself who see her as an obstacle to Shimok and Yeojin's friendship (even as Yeojin laments that she would've led a quiet life at Tongyeong, even as Shimok hallucinates her in his dreams and wished he treated her better).
I also relate heavily to Eunsoo's temperament but that's too much to unpack as a queer Asian living in one of the highest school suicide ratings in the world :P
22 - your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
Changjoon. Changjoon, Changjoon, Changjoon.
His entire arc lingers in the universe, a specter of his own failure that haunts everyone in the narrative he'd touched in his existence.
His mentees both show self-destructive tendencies in his aftermath, one desperate to keep everyone else from slipping through his fingers (Wonchul) and one who'd seemingly given up until being offered a chance to right his wrongs (Shimok). Shimok bears the cross of his suicide and to some degree blames himself for it even happening in the first place. A new character introduced into the narrative is inexplicibly tied to him in his own special way. His wife shows vicious demiromantic hatred towards everyone she perceives as having failed him and driven him to that point - especially herself. He stopped being a character at some point and instead morphs into a force of nature that directs everyone's actions, a weight upon all their shoulders knowing the stakes at hand.
I find Changjoon fascinating on multiple layers, not only with Yoo Jaemyung's masterful touch of giving him this much vulnerability and a severe brainrot about doomed demis but also him as a character being the narrative as a whole, the narrator who closes his own book by ending it all. Secret Forest 1 is such a comfort to me because when you know the mystery, peeling back the layers once again tells you what you hate to confront - Changjoon is controlling this narrative, pushing pieces into the right places, before finalling closing his own chapter on his own terms without so much of a struggle than resigned acceptance.
The most compelling fact of it all is how one character can carry so much weight in the narrative that once you remove him from the story, his existence echoes, over and over in it, reminding us over and over of what we lost. Very beautiful, very powerful.

Confession
A planned confession. Fabricated truth. The silence of that day is over!
Tumblr media
Premieres 24 March 2019, every Sunday & Monday, 9.15PM (SGT) within 24 hours of Korea
Encore every Saturday (2 episodes back-to-back), 10.30PM (SGT)
Confession is a 16-episode legal crime drama starring Lee Jun-ho (Rain or Shine, Chief Kim), Yoo Jaemyung (Hundred Million Stars from the Sky, Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon) & Shin Hyunbin (Mistress, Rain or Shine). This is a legal thriller about a lawyer who pursues the dirty truth, hidden and protected behind the laws prohibiting double jeopardy (which states that a person cannot face prosecution twice for the same offense).
A corpse has been found at a construction site, and everyone thought it was just a typical murder case. However, the suspect was found innocent at the court, and the truth cannot be traced. A lawyer, an intelligence officer and a journalist try to track the case in their own ways, and they discover that there are many hidden stories behind the case.
Choi Dohyun (Lee Junho) is a character who has led a hard life, having spent much of his childhood in a hospital due to a chronic heart condition. He miraculously had a chance for a heart transplant. Right after the successful heart transplant surgery, his father was accused of murder and received the death penalty for it. To investigate his father's case, Choi DoHyun now works as a lawyer.
Lee Junho will showcase the power of a person who may seem weak and defenseless on the outside, but whose inner strength proves to be his biggest weapon. For this drama, Junho made an effort to lose weight so that he can look suave as a lawyer.  He also practiced his ambassador skills without having to refer to a script in his hand. Furthermore, he studied difficult legal terms profusely to make his acting more realistic.  Jun-ho’s effort and hard work used to analyse and understand his character shows his commitment to enhance his acting spectrum. He impressed everyone with his powerful take on his character, skillfully alternating between Choi Dohyun’s cold, professional persona and his gentler, more emotional side. Confession will mark Lee Junho's first return to the small-screen since July of last year.
The director of this drama, Kim Cheolkyu, produced the critically acclaimed drama, Mother, last year. He won Best Drama at the 54th Baeksang Awards, Best Miniseries at the Seoul Drama Awards, and his drama was even nominated for Best Miniseries at the Cannes International Festival.

Conversation
Changjoon at a gathering: I’m about to expose the men. Whenever you ask a man’s height, he’ll add an inch.
Changjoon, waving to Sahyun at the next table: So if he’s 6 foot, he’ll say he’s 6 foot 1 and if he’s 6 foot 2, he’ll say he’s 6 foot 3.
Changjoon, bringing Yeonjae to him: Not me though. I subtract 4. I say I’m 5 foot 9- especially when there’s other men in the room...and then I just watch them /panic/.
Changjoon, watching with malicious delight: Not only have you exposed his lie, but now he thinks he’s 5 foot 3.
Changjoon, now smiling at the camera: What I do is not a crime, but it should be.

Woah. This is going to be an intense ride and I am here for it! (p.s this is in place of my Stuck in Dramaland post because this is all I’ve watched this week haha ^^”)
Secret Forest follows Prosecutor Hwang ShiMok (Cho SeungWoo) who does not feel emotions due to a surgery he underwent as a child. He is faced with a case that involves the corruption of his boss and peers. Together with Police Lieutenant Han YeoJin (Bae DooNa) they try to solve a murder and get rid of corruption in the Prosecutor offices.
I was expecting this to be a good drama, simply because Bae DooNa is in it! I would like to say that she is not the only reason I am thoroughly enjoying this drama so far.
The characters are very interesting. ShiMok lacks emotion and that means he comes across as cold and uninterested. He sometimes plays up his lack of emotion, especially when with his bosses. I feel that even in these two episodes, we are seeing the slight possibility of feelings from him. I would also like to point out that Cho SeungWoo is beautiful and his voice is 😍.
YeoJin is a character we haven’t really delved too much into at this point, but from her appearances you can tell that she values justice and is going to be a great asset to ShiMok and a great pairing with him.
The antagonists are very clear from the get go. Lee ChangJoon (Yoo JaeMyung) is the corrupt deputy chief and uses his position of power to try and keep ShiMok in line. He is joined by Seo DongJae (Lee JoonHyuk) who is a Prosecutor with a  tendency for the dramatics in his court cases. He seems sleazy from the outset, but is still put into his place by ChangJoon quite a bit. There dynamic is rather interesting, because even though they are working together, it is very clear who is boss.
Young EunSoo (Shin HyeSun) is a new Prosecutor who is ShiMok’s hoobae. You get the impression very early on that ShiMok does not think that she is ready to be a Prosecutor and even goes as far to say that he doesn’t trust her. Her character is very much a scapegoat character for the higher-ups. I hope to see her character growth and whichever side this character choices, I’m interested to see what this drama has in store for her.
I really enjoy Prosecutor dramas, especially when linked with the police (even if they are always shown as incompetent, bar one police officer!) The dynamic is always really interesting and Secret Forest is no different. There is a sort of sophistication to the Prosecutors which pairs well with the down to earth, roughened character of the police officer.
The murder, which is mixed with the intrigue of how far the corruption goes is a tense situation, especially combined with what happens with the suspect. My only qualm about the ‘intensity’ is the music… the  music gets so intense. Too intense. It can be a little jarring when the music is so dramatic and what is happening on screen doesn’t fit together.
The production of this drama is wonderful. I really enjoyed the scene where ShiMok is figuring out how the victim could be killed in a certain amount of time and the way he “enters” the scene. The lighting for this was done so well, especially when YeoJin brings him out of his reverie (which by the way he was fully enacting in the murder victims living room, knife in hand) and the light seamlessly changes from the brightness of day to the true darkness they are in. This whole scene really adds to the character of who ShiMok is and how his mind works.
Of course we can’t not talk about the murder. This is South Korea and there are a lot of regulations for what can be shown, especially concerning ‘Violence’ and what can be shown in certain time spots (think watershed). If you are looking for a realistic murder scene, you get it. You just have to contend with blurriness. Even the edges of knives have been blurred. Now, this isn’t my first time seeing this, so I don’t mind. I just wanted to give a little warning to those who may be confused as to why the blurriness is present.
Overall, I’m really looking forward to watching more of this drama and delving further into the corruption of the Prosecutor Office and getting to know these characters more. ShiMok is most definitely the one I’m watching for the most, simply because his premise is so intriguing. And the fact that he is getting what looks to be painful headaches/intense ringing in his ears (it’s not clear at this point or I’m too dumb… ^^”) at the moment could be interesting to see how they effect his behaviour later on.
What do you think of Secret Forest so far? Or do you plan on watching it? 🙂
Thank you for reading~
I finally found somewhere to watch #secretforest with subs!! Here are my #firstthoughts :) Woah. This is going to be an intense ride and I am here for it! (p.s this is in place of my Stuck in Dramaland post because this is all I've watched this week haha ^^")
