WELCOME TO THE SECOND SUPER AWESOME CHARACTER BATTLE, NOW WITH 128 CHARACTERS!!!!!
this bracket has 128 of my current favorite characters in media, whether they be obscure or well-known!
HOW THE FORMAT WORKS!:
the first round will contain a battle between the four characters in each box. only two in each box will move forward (the highest and second-highest voted)
the second round will contain a battle between two winners of one square and two of another, and only two will move forward
the third round is exactly like the last round, except only one will move forward
the fourth round will contain a battle between one winner and another, and only one will move forward
the fifth round is exactly like the last round, with the winner moving forward to compete for the ultimate win
the sixth round is the final round and will decide who is the winner of Spencer’s Super Awesome Character Battle 2024!!
just like last year, each poll will be up for a week, so there’s plenty of time to vote for your faves!!

🐱 for Morgan!
If they're a light or heavy sleeper:
A little lighter than before but still on the heavy-sleeper side. Barry has never understood how superheroing didn’t drastically change that…but he’s glad that it means she won’t be pulling all-nighters. Probably.
(She totally does, she just doesn’t tell him 😂)
What they would do if they won the lottery right now:
If she had all that money…honestly, she already has so much, so she’d probably put it into her savings with the rest of it. While Barry and Harry both continue to try to educate her on financial literacy 😂 (Eowells, “incidentally”, did not teach her this 💀)
If they have a special item that they couldn't bear to lose:
At the moment, no. But post-s2, Tina will give her things that used to belong to Harritess…including their old camcorder. It’s bittersweet, since they ofc call her “Jesse” in those videos, but…it’s something 🥺
One negative personality trait of theirs:
She has a very hard time trusting people—always, to some degree, but especially post-s1. Even with those she loves, she’ll question how sincere they really are, what the last straw will be to finally drive them away, will often annoy them until she finds their limit. Those who aren’t as attached to her as Team Flash or James (aka newer friends) might be put off by this…and at times, they are! It’s why she doesn’t have a lot of friends outside of Team Flash—just James, Danica, and Yolanda…and for the latter two, she keeps parts of herself hidden to keep from scaring them off and tries to take them at their word even when she’s inclined to say “are you sure” a dozen times.
It’s why Caitlin snapping at Morgan in s2 is particularly rough for Morgan—Caitlin apologizes later, and also post-s2 when she fully acknowledges that Morgan was right about Hunter, but…although she wants to, Morgan can’t forget it. It’s only been a year since Eowells, and she hasn’t even started the therapy necessary to process all of that…and despite not being intentionally malicious, Caitlin still tried to dismiss the signs Morgan saw in Hunter—someone Morgan saw as dangerous.
Their favorite 70s song:
Definitely Dancing Queen by ABBA! I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor is her second-favorite 💞
(ABBA is her favorite 70s artist overall. They’ve made music in other decades ofc but she loves their 70s songs best)
The color(s) associated with their zodiac:
She’s a Libra, so blue, pastel pink, pistachio green, lavender, peach orange. At least from what I’ve been able to find 😅
Their favorite comedy movie:
Megamind! It’s still one of her favorite movies ever
About one person they've lost:
Her biological parents, Harrison and Tess, whom she knows nothing about 😭 that’s two people, but still. It causes a lot of guilt post-s1 when she has to reckon with grieving people she barely knows…wondering if she even has that right.
A quote I associate with them:
“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.”
If they're a lover or a fighter:
She’s a fighter by nature who nevertheless loves very deeply and fiercely when trust is solid 💞
oc ask game!

Despite being part of the law enforcement and criminal justice, Craig could barely even look at the page for perhaps even a minute.
"Augh! Jesus!"
The moment he took a peek, he covered his eyes and looked away. The private detective, who is also a forensic technician, has been to many places and had witnessed many things that the innocent should not be seeing, and yet he could hardly look at the page for even a minute. Not to mention, his boss, Sergeant Harrison Yates, who has gone undercover a few times, at one point went undercover as a prostitute and called himself Yolanda, even went as far to getting himself literally fucked, also going all the way to Sweden with some pimp he was after just to get the guy arrested.
Good lord.
Yeah. Craig perhaps... has seen enough, and yet here he is still part of the law enforcement.
"Double?! Seriously?!" Not that Craig really wanted to know or even look, but if he were on the clock, he'd probably actually bother giving it a look, only to try to identify this impostor of his Gregory's.
...But then again, even while Craig was off the clock, he went out of his way to help track down Christophe only for Gregory's sake.
He sighed.
"I'm going to assume that this guy is an imposter, because knowing you, you're such a workaholic and have a million important matters to tend to that shit like onlyfans doesn't cross your mind."
Maybe he really should take a look. Curiosity was beginning to get to him. But he also didn't want to see the exposed giblet, despite having been into morgues sometimes and seeing everything.
Craig sighs once more.
"I'm off the clock, but I guess I could take a look, but it's only to try to identify who the hell this weirdo is posing as you. Why would anybody even try to pose as you though? What the hell did you do this time?"
Sure Gregory was part of a revolution in the past, has killed dozens here and there... The man was practically terrifying if one was to get on his bad side. But what could he have done to get someone to despise him that much enough to pose as him and try to maybe destroy his reputation?
"Ugh... Fine, I'll look."
It was his name that was getting dragged through the mud like a carcass if this turned out to be true. A quick motion and soon he has his phone in his hand, tapping away at the screen. Knew he shouldn't have laid low for a while! Knew he should have kept working! Take a break, they said! You need more sleep, they said!
Yeah, and look what happens when he lets his guard down for two minutes!
Someone saying he's exposing his giblets for all to see!
A quick bit of searching, poking around... the blond's face goes white and then red with fury.
"... Motherfucker! That's an account using my name and I'll admit, the double is good but it sure as hell isn't mine."
He can make it his in about an hour though. His to nuke off of the internet until there's not a scrap of data left of it!

Week 9 (SPRING 9/13)
Professional Log of Harper Tobin, Journeyman Witch
Patient #1: Yolanda Harrison, antique dealer
Ailment: Dragon Sickness [senses*] [wound*] (T4) The shop has been getting extremely cluttered lately, as poor Yolanda now refuses to sell any items at all, instead keeping them all for herself.
Recommend: A hearty dose of Come-To Brew
Patient #2: A stray cat my brother Edhaas brought home to Nana Dorea last week. She named him Muffins.
Ailment: Restless Bones [magic**] [bones*] The poor thing must have come across a bad miasma in a dungeon somewhere to catch this kind of curse - its skeleton has come alive inside its little body and is (ineffectually) trying to escape. Not as deadly as it sounds like it could be, but very uncomfortable.
Recommend: Coldrust to dispel the magic, Hermit Snail shells to soothe the bones
Field Notes:
My most immediate task was finding some Coffee Caps for Yolanda, as it’s always dangerous to leave the Dragon-Sickened unattended with your possessions for very long. It was a harrowing forage this time around...full of mishaps, even as short as it was.
First I had to forge a rather feisty river and lost my footing, falling straight into the arms of its resident naiad. So embarrassing. She was one of the most beautiful women I have ever laid eyes on, although she seemed flustered by my lack of coordination. I introduced myself and apologised profusely as she helped me back to shore. She told me her name is Nelofar, but that I could call her Nel if I liked. She was keen on conversation, and we spoke for a little while, but in time I had to explain my search to her and say my goodbyes. She seemed shy, but almost flirtatious? I don’t want to assume, but I think we hit it off. It’s really a shame that I had to move on in such a hurry. I wonder if I’ll see her again.
Soon after, I was fortunate to find what I was looking for - and yet, not so fortunate, as the mushrooms I was picking were probably growing in a fairy ring that I was too occupied to notice. I say this because halfway through my harvest I fell into a familiar fever and lost my footing again, blacking out to the sound of whispers in the strange and beautiful language I’ve only heard once before. I awoke just outside of town in another fairy ring - although, thankfully, still holding onto my Coffee Caps.
I was able to serve Yolanda her Come-To Brew in good time, despite everything, and she perked right out of her fixation. She even complimented me on the taste. She suggested I could start selling this concoction for purely recreational purposes as well, but I don’t think it would work out. It’s far too expensive to make.
Paid: 28 silver
My next destination was Hero’s Hollow to replenish the ingredients for Muffins’ remedy (I have them in the storeroom but it’s always good to keep stocked). Again, my trip was full of mixed luck. The very first thing I did was step into an acid trap and get badly burned, and I had to go right home again to heal myself. Of course then it felt like a challenge, and my stubbornness compelled me to return and try again.
This time I found the Coldrust I needed on a suit of armor in the old ruined library, and was able to gather Hermit Snail shells along the path outside of Rufus’ little dungeon shop. He asked if I was there to buy today, but I told him I’d better not. I wanted to see if I could gather a little more Vampire Venom on my way out. Sadly, all I did next was fall into yet another trap. I had to go home with a good deal less blood and no painkillers at all, neither for me or for Bàs Bàta.
I don’t know what I’ve done to bring this upon myself. Maybe that weird “Orendal” box I found in the lake was cursed.
“Chillixir Mix”
Crush Hermit Snail shells into a fine powder
Crush Coldrust & mix together with the shell dust
Dissolve powder into any beverage
End result will be cold & refreshing without the need for ice
Paid: 60 silver When my raven returned I saw that Nana Dorea passed along double payment as compensation for the burden of extra duties, which I’m certainly not going to refuse, especially if this is going to be the norm. I was already nearly regretting the new arrangement, after everything, but this might make just it all worth it.
Additional Notes:
I bought a sickle in town for 70 silver in hopes of improving my foraging a bit on bad-luck days. I also went and paid a visit to the Lunar Tower, in case the problem was that my equipment needed purification. After that I felt a little bit better, and I eventually managed to get up the gumption to head out to Hero’s Hollow again.
Already my luck was much better this time around, as I was able to get a good dose of Vamp Venom within the first few hours or so of the expedition. I was also startled by the sight of a wooden chest walking around and sniffing things as I rounded the corner. It seems to be a mimic, I assume - I know of them but this is the first time I’ve ever seen one in person - and it was very friendly. It shuffled right up to me and allowed me to give it a few pats. It seemed hungry, but when I offered some of my trail rations it was utterly disinterested, and it eventually wandered off. I wish I’d had something else to give it.
Further down the corridor I accidentally stepped on a skeleton again - why do they insist on sleeping in the middle of the floor? - and as his loud, droning complaints filled my ears I recognized the voice as the same one I’d stepped on last time. I called him out and asked where the helmet was that I’d given him, and his whining quieted instantly into a mutter as he told me he’d lost it. I asked his name (it’s Paul), then explained to him at length why it was a bad idea for him to sleep sprawled across the middle of a corridor if he didn’t want to get stepped on, and this time I think I might have gotten through to him. At least he was tired enough of my lecturing to agree and move along somewhere else.
When I accidentally entered the puzzle room, it was filled with mirrors, and it waylaid me for a long while as I tried to find my way out. The upside is that I discovered a vampire taking a nap in one corner - it seems it was lying in wait for a victim and dozed off. Taking my chance, I extracted a second dose of venom before taking my leave and heading back home.

[Little Estudos] “A Parábola dos Talentos”
Texto Base: Mateus 25:14-30

ShadowStar: Making Plans

-
“Why did you decide to bring all this stuff to school?” Yolanda asked as she and Courtney struggled to get Courtney’s large gym bag into her locker.
Shaking her head, Courtney said, “My mom was going through my closet.” She turned the bag another way and shoved as hard as she could. “I think the green lantern is stuck.” Finally, she put her shoulder into it and knocked the bag loose enough to slam her locker door on it. Sighing, she used both hands to push her hair back from her face and started to walk along the hall with Yolanda. Her eyes scanned the hallway. “We have to ramp up our search. We can’t take on the entire Injustice Society ourselves. Who can we ask?”
Yolanda rubbed her lips together, dark eyes shifting over the sea of faces before her. Then, she smiled, seeing a braided classmate of theirs. “What about Artemis Crock?” Courtney watched the girl toss a football back and forth between her hands, seconds before it was stolen by a classmate in his letterman jacket. “She’s the best athlete in the whole school.”
“I though to of that,” Courntey agreed. “But she’s too--” She winced, watching Artemis tackle the classmate to the ground. “Competitive. We need Heroic traits.”
“You talking about me?” Brady asked, coming up on Courtney’s other side. Yolanda smiled and waved at him while Courtney rolled her eyes and gave a quick, “No!” in response. “Okay...so what are we talking about?”
“Who we can ask to join us,” Yolanda explained. “People who are heoric. Who have the hero traits that can handle these powers.” She then addressed Courtney. “Shouldn’t we be looking beyond Blue Valley High?”
“We can’t trust adults,” Courtney said empathically. “Aanyone here can be part of the Injustice Society.”
“I can always ask Barry to take a look around,” Brady suggested. He shrugged. “Shouldn’t take him too long.”
“Barry?” Courtney repeated. Almost demanded. “Barry who?”
“Barry Allen,” Brady explained. “He’s my step-dad, he’s the Flash.” Then he frowned. “Well, I guess he’s not on this Earth, but he is on mine.” His nose wrinkled. “Is there no STAR Labs here, either? No Harrison Wells? Tess Morgan?”
“Who’s Harrison Wells?” Yolanda asked.
“Only the smartest person on the planet.”
“Never heard of him,” Courtney said quickly. “But there was as Flash on this...” She paused, still struggling to understand the whole Crisis and multiverse thing. “Earth. I guess. So maybe that’s something that can help us!” She grabbed Brady’s shoulder. “Where is he? Barry?”
“Probably trying to figure out how to contact our friends on our Earth,” Brady replied. He shook his head. “My mom, you met her, she can teleport between Earths but for some reason her powers decided we should be stuck on this hell hole.” He pushed her hand off his arm and looked her in the eye to add. “With you.”
Courtney waved off his taunting remark. Yolanda, on the other hand, rubbed at her temples. “This whole other Earth thing is annoying.”
“You get used to it.” Brady cracked his knuckles. “Okay, so I’ll just ask Barry if he can see if there’s a doppelganger on this Earth and--”
“--No, I already told you, this is my Earth. My Earth, my problem, my team, my adventure!” Courtney declared. “I get to call the shots!”
“Oy, you’re so annoying,” Brady remarked, closing his eyes. “Cute, but annoying.”
Courntey smiled. “Thank you.”
Brady’s face screwed up in confusion. “You’re taking that as a complement?”
“Well, it’s better than what you are,” Courtney replied. She continued before Brady could venture a guess as to what she meant. “Ugly and boring.”
“Ha ha.” Brady smirked.

The 20 Best Horror Movies on Netflix UK – Scary Films to Watch Right Now
https://ift.tt/2RE5emn
Netflix is an ever-changing, constantly growing treasure trove of hidden gems and secret delights (here’s everything new on Netflix UK this month). Sometimes, a teeny bit too secret though.
Who hasn’t sat down to watch a horror movie and found themselves scrolling endlessly, either not being able to find something they’re in the mood for, or not really knowing what half the titles are, or if they’re any good?
We’ve scoured the full current catalogue available to watch in the UK now and picked out the best scary movies. It’s a mix of classic and new, and a range of slashers, horror-coms, mumblegore, monster movies and more to hopefully scratch that itch with ease.
We’ll keep this updated as and when titles drop in and out of the service.
Hereditary (2018)
If you haven’t seen this slice of trauma, the feature debut of Ari Aster, you probably should. If you have seen it, you probably won’t want to again. Toni Collette stars as a woman whose controlling mother has just passed away setting of a series of horrible events. Aster says the film was partly inspired by his own sense of his family being cursed – this a movie absolutely drenched in grief and pain with astonishing performances all round. It’s tough going, but it’s a masterpiece. Read our review.
The Platform (2019)
This existential Spanish horror made a splash at the start of lockdown with it’s tale of prisoner trapped in an enormous vertical prison with a platform at it’s centre which delivers food to the inmate floor by floor starting at the top, so that each floor only gets what the floor above has left over. It’s political, allegorical, it’s clever and it’s very violent.
The Endless (2017)
Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s gorgeous sci-fi horror stars the two as brother who escaped from a cult ten years ago and are drawn back in in search of answers when a strange videotape arrives. This is their third movie after Resolution and Spring and the two are only growing in strength as directors – The Endless is rammed with indelible imagery and deeply unsettling moments within a plot that is a joy to unpick.
What Keeps You Alive (2018)
Couple Jackie and Jules head to a remote woodland cabin to celebrate their first wedding anniversary but things go bad… Ok this sounds like the most generic slasher in the world but trust us it’s not. Twists hit early on (that we’d hate to spoil) and the tension ramps up fast in a very effective cat and mouse chase with a female bent. This comes from Colin Minihan who made Grave Encounters – this isn’t similar but both have a disorientating sense of place. Read our review.
Orphan (2009)
Released during the heyday of Dark Castle’s mid-budget horror splurge, Orphan is one of those genre films with an absolutely ludicrous (and therefore thoroughly enjoyable) twist, which we will not spoil for you. Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga star as a couple mourning the loss of their baby, who decided to adopt a little Russian girl called Esther from the local orphanage. Things quickly start to go very, very wrong as the pair start to suspect that wee Esther – who insists on dressing like a spooky doll – isn’t all she appears to be. Check out our review.
Insidious (2010)
The many sequels may have yielded diminishing returns but the first of this franchise, about a couple (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) whose comatose son appeared to be trapped in another realm by a evil spirit, is a very effective chiller. Horror genius James Wan directs, and the first half of this movie at least is pretty much guaranteed to make you jump out of your skin.
Annihilation (2018)
An all star cast including Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Tessa Thompson, plus the quality direction of Alex Garland wasn’t enough to secure this horror sci-fi based on Jeff Vandermeer’s novel a theatrical release in the UK. Nevermind, that just means you can watch it for free on Netflix. Portman joins a crew of women exploring the mysterious Area X where he husband ventured some time before and came back changed. It’s a weird, unfamiliar landscape of beautiful flora and terrifying fauna defying explanation until the strange, indelible finale (not sure what it means? Have a read of this explainer). And you can check out our review, too if you like.
Daybreakers (2009)
You’ll get a little bit of everything with this Spierig Brothers curio. It was the film that really got the directing team noticed and it’s not hard to see why. Set in a dystopian world where basically everyone has been turned into a vampire, one corporation thinks it’d be a bloody (sorry) good idea to track down all the surviving humans and…well, basically milk them. Ethan Hawke stars as a vampire haematologist who starts to think there might be another way for this story to go after he’s collared by a former vampire (Willem Dafoe), who can cure everyone. (Living) dead good. Check out our review.
The Bar (2017)
Slightly bonkers Spanish horror thriller which sees a bunch of strangers stuck in a busy Madrid cafe when snipers begin shooting anyone who tries to leave. Confusion and personality clashes abound in this economical single location chiller with a dark sense of human as the inhabitants slowly discover what’s going on, who’s responsible and try to work out if and how they will survive.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon’s love/hate letter to the horror genre felt like something of a game changer when it finally arrived (it was shelved for several years because of financial issue with original distributor MGM). Chris Hemsworth and Haley Bennett star in a double layer story about ordinary kids vacationing in a woodland cabin, with Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins as very particular kinds of bureaucrats up to something in the background. No spoilers, just watch. Here’s our review.
Cargo (2017)
Martin Freeman stars in this Netflix original developed from a short directed by Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke. Set in the Australian outback, Freeman is a father trying to find someone to protect his child in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. More wistful and emotional than that sounds on paper, there’s a fascinating subplot about an Aboriginal girl mourning her father and the final set piece is unforgettable. Check out our review.
Lifeforce (1985)
A Cannon Films classic directed by late Texas Chain Saw legend Tobe Hooper, people are still discovering the ’80s madness that is Lifeforce. Originally entitled Space Vampires, it’s exactly what you’d expect, and so much more. Nude, energy sucking bat creatures are brought back to Earth after an interstellar mission finds a gaggle of them lying dormant in Halley’s Comet, and it all goes very badly for the planet. You can expect a scenery-chewing Patrick Stewart to pop up in between the tits and gore. Not literally! Although, sometimes literally.
Creep (2014)
No, not the one set on the tube, this ‘mumblegore’ horror is far weirder than that. Director Patrice Brice plays Aaron, a videographer hired by Mark Duplass’s Josef to make a video for his kid to watch after he’s died of a terminal illness. Or does he? Playing on the power of politeness and the awkwardness of male relationships this is a highly original, itchily uncomfortable watch. Creep 2 is also on Netflix, and also good!

Hush (2016)
Another smart sensory-based horror, this time from Oculus and Doctor Sleep man Mike Flanagan. This home invasioner sees deaf writer Maddie (Kate Siegel) attacked in her woodland retreat by a masked stranger. He uses her inability to hear to sneak around and terrorise her, but she has tricks of her own up her sleeve. Check out our review.
The Invitation (2015)
Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, Destroyer) just keeps knocking it out of the park (and she’s recently been attached to a Dracula movie from Blumhouse Productions), and with The Invitation she continued to secure her place as one of the best directors around. Here, Will (Logan Marshall-Green) and his girlfriend go to a party held by his formerly suicidal ex-wife, and discover that she seems to be happier than she ever was, but Will starts to suspect that rather than healthily coping with her mental illness, she may well have joined a doomsday cult instead, and be planning to kill them all. Paranoia and tension are at the max in this bad boy. Here’s our review.
Little Evil (2017)
Comedy horror from Eli Craig who made the wonderful Tucker and Dale Vs Evil. This time he’s playing on creepy kid tropes, particular those from The Omen movies. Adam Scott plays a man who discovers his new wife’s (Evangeline Lilly) son might actually be the anti-christ. And because it’s Eli Craig, of course it’s funny and very good natured as well as playing with the genre.
Gerald’s Game (2017)
Another Mike Flanagan offering here – what can we say? he’s damn good! – as Jessie (a spectacular Carla Guigino) and her husband Gerald drive to a remote house to try and spice up their marriage with a bit of gentle BDSM. One problem: Jessie is not into it. At all. Two problems: Gerald carks it, leaving her tied up with only her cunning to help her free herself from her prone, handcuffed predicament. Three problems: a mythical, supernatural killer may be in the house. Stephen King, you’ve done it again. Read our review.
Ravenous (2017)
Unusual Canadian zombie movie (in French) which sees remaining stragglers after an outbreak of the infected band together in disparate groups travelling to find other survivors. Ravenous sets up its infected as worshipping a sort of new religion of found items (chairs, TVs etc.) making comment on the zombification of society. It’s also funny and quite scary, so there’s that.
Veronica (2017)
Loosely based on a true story, Veronica is set in Madrid in 1991 and follows a young woman who messes with a Ouija board who thinks she’s accidentally summoned an evil spirit. Director by Paco Plaza, one of the two directors behind [REC], the movie gained minor notoriety when it first landed on Netflix because of a few viewers finding it overly scary. It’s true there are some seriously creepy bits (but you’ll be fine!).
The Perfection (2018)
Get Out‘s Allison Williams and Dear White People‘s Logan Browning star in this twisty, trashy but nonetheless enjoyable tale of two musical prodigies hothoused at a mysterious academy. It’s lurid and lavish (and it’s got some fairly dodgy sexual politics, we’d warn you) but great lead performances and a tricksy three act structure that keeps you guessing, make this an entertaining and unusual Friday night pick. Read our review.
Want more horror? Here’s our list of 81 genuinely creepy horror movies. Here are some horror movies it’s safe to watch with your kids. And here are some underappreciated Scream-inspired horror movies of the 90s.

ik you just finished s1 of stargirl, what are your overall thoughts on the show? i myself watched the whole show quite recently (both s1 & s2) and got really attached to it...things get a lil more interesting in s2, i'm real excited to see you finish it up as well whenever you can :)
I’m absolutely in love with it! Each member of the JSA feels human, feels real, and I adore all of them 🥰 also, as of the S1 finale, no one has been forced to forgive their parents for their bad decisions (Courtney doesn’t count here because she has good parents). I hope that trend continues, because it is such a rarity to see in media.
Henry’s death...okay, I made a post about this, but I’m conflicted about it. Like, on the one hand, I think it was an incredibly bold and powerful choice to kill him at his father’s hand–showing the undying cruelty of Brainwave, contrasting him with his misguided but well-meaning son, and reminding us that oh, right, this superhero business means people are gonna die, and it’s gonna traumatize the teens. But...it also falls into the “antagonist is redeemed through death” trope. Henry was on the path to redeeming himself, he was already taking steps to get there, but it was cut short.
And even if they did want to keep this (which...is fine I guess, Henry did get a bit more of an arc than a lot of antagonists that are “redeemed” like this), I have a bigger issue with it. This happened before Courtney even realized that they weren’t blood-related cousins! A lot of Henry’s motivation was based on that, so by having him be dead when Courtney realizes this...it kinda makes it feel like “oh, well, good thing Courtney didn’t realize this when Henry was alive, or else he wouldn’t have wanted to help!” It just feels like, at least, those two events should’ve been swapped, with Henry having a moment of telling Courtney “idc if we aren’t blood-related cousins. You carry Starman’s staff, you’re Stargirl, and somehow, you still believe in me. You’re more family to me than my actual family.”
Like...everything else can be the same (Henry does apologize to Yolanda a few times before he’s in mortal peril, with clear regret, and he does try)...it just feels like a lot of his redemption motive is based on this familial connection that isn’t even real apparently. So swapping the two events, and giving Henry and Courtney that moment, would feel more organic/natural, I think. And keep Henry’s arc intact even after the reveal of Courtney’s dad.
...I think I just gave myself a fix-it idea 😂
All in all, I think it’s fantastic, I just think they weakened Henry’s arc a bit with that dad reveal, which made his death feel a little pointless. Which is why I was so excited when he was alive for 5 seconds in the finale...except it was Brainwave.
On that note!! I made a post about this too, but I’m so glad they had Yolanda kill him (and that apparently S2 is gonna deal with her PTSD around it)!! The Flash had this problem with Barry refusing to kill his nemesis, Eobard Thawne. Which...okay, yes, heroes have a no-kill code. To some extent, I get that, as a pacifist myself. But...the more Barry let Thawne go, the worse he got.
He killed Barry’s mom for starters, killed and impersonated Harrison Wells, manipulated everyone around him...then, later, he teamed up with Nazis, Barry had a chance to kill him and didn’t, he manipulated Barry’s daughter and tried to kill her, Barry had a chance to kill him and didn’t, he possessed a doppelgänger of Wells and threatened to kill Barry and everyone he loved, Barry had a chance to kill him and didn’t...you see what I mean?
A kill in that situation is self-defense, but Barry repeatedly refused to do it. Yolanda realized that “Henry” in the finale was actually his dad, Brainwave, and didn’t hesitate to kill him–she knew Brainwave was a despicable monster who regretted nothing, so she killed him before he could kill again. Mike, a preteen, also ran over Icicle. These are kids making these decisions! Barry is an adult!
Rick refused to kill Grundy, yes. But that was well-written. It’s established that Rick killing someone would potentially set him on a revenge-dark path, with his tendency toward anger/violence. A no-kill code for him makes sense. Barry has never shown any inclination toward that sort of darkness, so while he can absolutely choose to be a pacifist, he can’t hesitate in the face of killing a literal psychopath bent on killing everyone he loves.
...this got long, I’m sorry anon 😂 but in conclusion, I love Stargirl so much, and I can’t wait to watch the second season!
