YOKAI MONSTERS: ALONG WITH GHOSTS (March, 1969)
The Yokai Monsters trilogy from Daiei Film, released in the US by ADV Films under their Rubbersuit imprint.
While written by Tetsuro Yoshida, and featuring various yokai from Japanese mythology and folklore, the films are not connected and are stand-alone tales. Like the Daimajin Trilogy from the same studio two years prior, they can bee seen in any order.
The yokai are brought to life using puppetry, suitmation, and in some cases animation, which makes them a lot of fun to watch. Nowadays most of them would be created using CGI, which would ruin the whole experience (at least for me).

The Ushi-Oni [Japanese folklore, yokai]!
Tumblr media
Japanese folklore has a rich repertoire of strange beasts, spirits and creatures. And as Japanese Yokai go, the Ushi-Oni is one of the older ones. Though usually depicted as a giant spider with the head of a bull, some sources portray it with a feline body, resembling a monstrous bull-headed tiger. Regardless of its appearance, the Ushi-Oni is a cruel and vicious creature that enjoys killing people. In some versions this monster makes its home on mountains or in forested areas, but usually it is an aquatic spook, living either in the sea or in freshwater rivers, lakes or swamps.
The Ushi-Oni is married to a different monster: the Nure-Onna. This female fiend resembles a large snake with a human head and arms. She is an aquatic creature and lives near shores and riverbanks.
The two monsters work together to ambush people, with each having a set role: first they wait on a shore or coast for someone to pass by. When they spot a lone traveller, the Nure-Onna transforms into a young human woman holding an infant. She then walks up to the intended victim and asks them to hold her baby, and if they do, she casually walks into the sea and disappears, leaving the victim confused and holding a baby.
Tumblr media
Whether this baby is a sentient, separate entity or merely a magical illusion is unclear, but its weight magically increases when the victim is holding it. Eventually, the child is so heavy that the traveller is unable to move without dropping the infant. At this point, the bull-headed Ushi-Oni emerges from the sea and pounces on the unfortunate victim to devour its prey.
In the 14th century epic ‘Chronicle of Great Peace’, the hero Watanabe Tsuna faces and eventually defeats an Ushi-Oni.

The first Yokai Hunters Society zine contains a handful of famous yokai from Japanese folklore. Their details consist of a (cool) illustration, a one paragraph description and a brief listing of abilities. That’s fine for well-known creatures like Kappa, but for a game as narrowly focused on monster hunting as this, players are going to need a lot more monsters, with a lot more detail. Thus, Field Guide to Yokai (2022).
I love a monster book, and this one is no exception. Yokai are fascinating because there is very little about them that is set in stone. There are broad categories, sure, and general behaviors, but you can never be sure what you’re going to get with a specific yokai. They’re inherently individual, and that is sort of unique and delightful for an RPG to embrace.
By Western fantasy standards, they’re also damn strange. A personal favorite, the tsukumogami, illustrates this nicely — if an object of daily use makes it to 100 years of age, it can sometimes awaken as a yokai. Years of dungeon crawls have done nothing to prepare players for sentient paper umbrellas that enjoy licking people. But you can immediately see the scenario potential of a house full of well-loved tools suddenly coming to life and accidentally troubling a neighborhood (I am getting extreme Real Ghostbusters cartoon vibes, just talking about it). There’s also more menacing creatures, like the skull made of skulls or the human-eating ghosts, the latter is definitely tuned for more traditional monster-hunting scenarios. Then there’s stuff like the Futakuchi Onna, which looks like a typical woman, but has an extra mouth in the back of its head. Mostly it just eats a lot, but that doesn’t stop those strong Junji Ito vibes from creeping me out.
Regardless, an essential Yokai Hunters Society supplement and one of general utility for those not playing that game. If nothing else, Chema Gonzalez’ art is pure delight.

BEN and a Yokai Reader
Tumblr media
A/n: I'm sorry I'm not responding directly to your ask Anon. I used it to ask what a Yokai was (bc I was dumb and forgot that google existed lmfao). Also so sorry for the delay I took a time researching about yokais, SORRY FOR THE LONG DEFINITIONS I'M VERY VERY SPECIFIC
I hope you enjoy
Tumblr media
Yokai definition that I'm using:
An ambiguous term that characterizes any supenatural creature (literally means demon, Spirit or monster). Is a generalized class that includes Onis (ogre), Kitsunes (fox), yuki-onna (woman on snow), Kappas (child of the river), Tengu (sacred dog), etc. Generally they have some kind of supernatural or spiritual power wich makes encounters with humans dangerous.
In this scenario you're a Kitsune-Obake
Perhaps the trickiest of all the obakes, the kitsune is a fox. Japanese folklore views foxes as highly intelligent creatures that develop paranormal abilities as they age - typically when they reach 100. Famously advanced shapeshifters, foxes will often assume the shape of a beautiful woman or an elderly man and pretend they need help; but when you get close, play a trick on you.
Tumblr media
đŸ‘» He genuinely though that you're just a regular ghost, he's surprised when you tell him that, actually, you're a Fox shapeshifter, in simple words
đŸ‘» He likes how prank creative you're, you both have a great time pranking everyone else
đŸ‘» he really likes petting you in your true fox form he finds you super soft and loves your multiple tails
đŸ‘» He always will bring up fox related things when you're chatting, either to make fun of you or because he genuinely thinks you would like seeing/hearing that
đŸ‘» PRANK WARS PRANK WARS. You're in a ethernal prank war with him and you have no choice
đŸ‘» You shapeshift a LOT to prank everyone especially when Ben is near because he loves that, now everyone in the mansion is suspicious of everything when Ben is around but you aren't is fun!
đŸ‘» He's afraid of ageing, so you'll transform in an older version of him because you can, make it swim and he'll pass out poor dude
đŸ‘» You're like, super smart and you use it for your advantage when pranking Ben, he pranks others so often that normal pranks don't work on him so you're very very sneaky with yours
đŸ‘» He likes to play animal crossing with you for some reason, he's not a big fan of AC but he always suggest it when you're going to play together. Maybe because there's a fox in it and wolves that look like foxes
đŸ‘» You can posses people and sometimes you'll posses one of the pastas without telling him and act as strangely as possible to see how long it takes for him to notice, most of the time he does not notice tho so you learned to be pretty obvious, this man does not pay attention to other people
đŸ‘» Overall you both have a pretty chill relationship and aren't that really different as a species, both ghosts but you have a fancier name
I'm so sorry if this is bad I got out of ideas 😭

Most of My Ryou Head Canons
He is bilingual and speaks English and Japanese fluently.
His mom is Japanese and his dad is mixed (English and Indian)
He learned how to cook from the collective help of his mom and both sets of grandparents.
Everything he makes tastes like heaven.
Sometimes, he forgets his friends can't speak English as well as him and he'll just start talking and have no one understand a single thing he says.
He hates coffee. It's disgusting and bitter and smells bad.
Whenever he can't find a figurine of a character he likes (or there just aren't that many), he makes them himself.
Ryou's favorite animal is a tapir because they're cute, and they look like bakus.
He thinks yokai and other folk spirits are incredibly interesting and loves learning about them and talking about them.
His favorite drinks included Calpico, ramune, blueberry lemonade, and vanilla tea.
He is a femboy, he's just a little embarrassed about it because he thinks his friends will make fun of him. (They won't. Except Duke)
He admires the fuck out of Kaiba and thinks he's the coolest guy to ever exist.
Despite living away from all of his family, Ryou is still spoiled with gifts and letters. It just isn't enough because he wants his family there with him, but some evil spirit scared him into moving away and never seeing his family again.
Ryou is an anime fan. His favorites include Violet Evergarden, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Black Butler, Nichijo, Disastrous Life of Saiki K, Madoka Magica, Panty and Stocking, Nanbaka, Nana, and Mob Psycho 100.
The reason Ryou's hair looks so fluffy is because he pins most of it up into layers so he can better avoid being told to cut it. When the pins are out, his hair reaches his upper thigh.
Ryou's Monster World campaign group is the other minor characters +Honda and Malik.
He's a picky eater and doesn't like things like milk, lentils, beans, most cheeses, mushy vegetables, or sea food.
If the other summoning types were available in DM, Ryou's favorite would be synchro summoning.
Animals love Ryou. He's like a Disney princess to them. However, Ryou is terrified of dogs and cockroaches. Yami Bakura makes them leave for him.
Ryou is attracted to two things: scars and muscles. This means being friends with Jonouchi, Honda, and Malik is fucking torture.
He and Duke are rivals, he just doesn't know it yet.
He loves Vocaloid! His favorite producers are Maretu, Kikuo, Pinocchio P, Deco-27, and IMO.
Ryou is genuinely just really good at art. Fantastic at making figurines, he can draw really well, and his writing is amazing.
Yami Bakura was the one that made Ryou's friends’ figurines and that's why Ryou's is in a different style. Ryou also made Zorc and Zorc's human form.
Ryou's favorite vocaloid song is UFO by Kikuo (listen to it)
He loves cats! They're his favorite pet animal.
Whenever Ryou gets asked to do something for Yami Bakura, he does it without much question. That's his friend!
He loves costume parties!
While Ryou loves the occult and learning about ghosts and spirits, he isn't much of a horror fan (unless it's Junji Ito).
Honda is Ryou's best friend.
Ryou gets sick easily, and whenever he does he becomes even more useless and airheaded. Yami Bakura usually took care of him, but After the Millennium World arc Honda started helping instead.
After Battle City, Ryou bought a shirt that Jonouchi had in order to show him support during tournament duels. (You know the shirt I'm talking about)
If Ryou has a lot of leftover food from the night before, he brings some of it to Jonouchi and Honda.
Ryou’s eyelashes are really thick, and Yami Bakura's eyelashes are longer than life itself and thin.
Ryou's loves games like Undertale, Zork, Stardew Valley, Little Miss Fortune, Fran Bow and Fire Emblem.
Ryou is smart enough to understand school and his interests, but dumb enough to not understand anything else. He has a case of stupid.
He is constantly dozing off or staring into space.
He is constantly forgetting to eat due to doing something he enjoys a little too much, or finding everything in his apartment disgusting (he buys his own food).
He likes cosplaying.
Ryou uses anti-meta or back row reliant decks. If given the opportunity though, he would use special summons reliant decks like Mayakashi or Tearlement.
His favorite monster card is Curse Necrofear.
He always tries to make friends with everyone, even if they were really mean to him at some point.
He likes pastel colors.
Sometimes, he tries to make his own Stop Motion videos. Sometimes, they look good. Sometimes, they look like ass.
Ryou harbors a special hatred towards Bandit Keith Howard.
He's very jealous of Yugi and Yami's relationship. This has led him to try and avoid them as much as he can.
He loves any game that involves Miis. Miitopia, Wii sports, Tomodachi Life, if it involves Miis he loves it.
Ryou has played every single Fire Emblem game.
Was almost diagnosed with an eating disorder, but wasn't due to the doctor “disappearing”.
Listens to Universe Cat Drowning on repeat.
If he met Astral, they'd be friends.
Zorc Necrophades was designed like that because Ryou was sick, sleep deprived, and hadn't eaten in a while. Also because horny.
He loves nicknames and pet names.
Tries to buy his friends nice gifts all the time. He is constantly told “no”.
He enjoys gardening, but only when he can plant flowering plants.
Ryou can sleep on his own just fine, but he'd sleep even better if there was another person with him. Preferably if they were holding him.
Certified monster fucker.
Forgets to drink water yet somehow cries a lot.
He lies a lot, mostly for laughs.
He does not like Dungeon Dice Monsters.

May I ask what reference materials you have at your disposal?
This list includes only books about monsters that I own and have used for the Codex at some point. It does not include books I've gotten from libraries (I have access to an excellent university library and one of the best public library systems in the country), nor does it include RPG books or books about science and nature. We'd be here all day, and this list already took like 90 minutes to collate.
A Field Guide to the Little People—Arrowsmiths and Moore Barlowe’s Guide to Extraterrestrials; Barlowe’s Guide to Fantasy—Barlowe The Dictionary of Demons—Belanger Monsters in Print—Benedict Ghosts Monsters and Demons of India—Bhairav and Khonna The Mwindo Epic—Biebuyck and Mateene, ed. Appearing on this list does not necessarily constitute a recommendation. Carol Rose's books, for example, has a lot of gaps and are responsible for a number of myths and misconceptions that have circulated around the internet. And A Wizard's Bestiary by Oberon Zell-Ravenheart is more worthwhile as a curiosity than as reference material.
There are a lot of internet sources, of course, but I'm linking my top choices. If you're not already aware of A Book of Creatures and Yokai.com, you need to be.

My squirrel brain sort of ran back off into the sunset again, I have the robot storystarted but I got inspired to I start a little mini project with making creetures 😳
Me and @windydrawallday had got to talking about creature taming games like Pokemon since I have been drawing some fan art from the games I have been playing— And well I got inspired to make a few of my own lil creetures inspired by the idea of cursed objects and my love of turning everyday household items into monsters (an art assignment that we did when I was in middle school and the thought of it has stuck with me ever since, also 100 year old yokai objects!) And ghosts and spirits who if you treat well will protect and guard you and your home.
I am really tempted to share the designs here.

I contributed to Arrow Video’s blu-ray release of YOKAI MONSTERS, some of my favorite tokusatsu movies ever! My essay takes you to where and when the titular spooks reside in the first three movies — from Edo to Kyoto, and along with ghosts on the Tokaido Road.
I love these and watch them every Halloween — so of course it’s exciting to be in their very first English language blu-ray release.

Terrors in the Night
Wild Huntsman (10-Point Quality) - The Wild Hunt is a hunting party of all sorts of monsters and creatures of the night, traveling the sky like a living storm, and hunting down prey that crosses their path. When they catch a target without immediately killing them, they are given a choice: Join or Die.
Those that Join the Wild Hunt can be called up into it whenever the Wild Hunt is called up (usually by a Hunt-master, be it the Erlking or Odin, or powerful ghosts). The Hunt grants the power of Flight at 3 times their normal speed and cloaks the target in armor of shadows equal to their Willpower, as well as giving them a weapon that deals their Willpower x Strength in damage if melee, and Willpower x Dexterity if ranged. What form it takes, and what skill it posses, varies from person to person, as the magic of the Hunt tailors itself to them. The magic also allows them to traverse both air and water at no penalty, and at the same speed.
The Hunt itself acts as a 1 Point contact, but also a 3 point obligation. The hunt can be deadly even for the hunters, otherwise, where's the fun?
Being a Wild Hunt Leader increased the Contact to 5, provides Intellectus for the Hunt and a Banner to command the Hunt. It also can confer status, but that is not always the case. Being able to call the Hunt is a difficult Willpower test that musts gain at least 3 success levels. This costs 25 Points.
Hyakki Yagyo Ichiin (5-Point Quality) - The Wild Hunt of the Yokai is less a hunt and more a raucous party of chaos and destruction. The Night Parade of 100 Demons is usually called for a party, but has occasionally been called for battle against supernatural evils.
That are not Yokai, naturally.
Members of the Night Parade gain the ability to fly ethereally through the sky at their normal movement speed, as well as a 4-Point contact for the Night Parade itself. Members can call on it, but it is not a 100% guarantee they'll show up to fight. To party? Sure. To fight? Eh, might need some convincing. Individual Yokai can be befriended or at least calmed by demonstrating membership in the night parade as that is a position of strength and respect. So they are more open to doing favors for a member. This comes with a 2 point Obligation (their parties can be rough, and there's the whole fight to protect the supernatural wilds of Japan thing).

Note
Rockman.exe, why are you scared if ghosts and monsters even though you have the eraseman.exe soul and beast cross that makes you look like a demon (beast) king?
Tumblr media
"I would never go as far as calling myself a demon king. Demons are evil spirits, and despite Eraseman's appearance, he's just a Net Navi like me... He's got nothing to do with demons... He might actually be based off some kind of Yokai like Slashman(Kamatachi) and Tenguman(Tengu), but I'm not 100% sure...
Tumblr media
"And when it comes to ghost... I'm not 100% sure of that neither. They don't even exist (I hope)... They're just... Creepy..."
