Yuki-onna (Yokai) Snow spirit from Japanese folklore that appears to travelers who venture into heavy snowstorms. Sometimes she appears as a woman who needs help. Other times she carries a baby, and when a well-intentioned traveler picks it up, he cannot move. In other stories, she invades homes. Either way, the traveler will die.

あっという間に今年最の一日。
“王子稲荷の狐火”
©️maya miyama 2022
The last day of this year has come in a blink of the eyes.
"Oji Inari Fox Fire"
This place, known as a famous spot for “Fox Fire” used to be large changing tree, and foxes from all over Kanto would gather there on New Year's Eve. Farmers would count the number of fox fires and predict the next year's harvest.
I'd love to draw lots of “Ayakashi” calls as Yokai and Fairies next year. And of course, Do wish my luck!

This weeks Rhode Montijo's Fantasmical Fridays prompt. I've been wanting to design a Kappa for the longest time, so I was glad this week's prompt had one.

In ancient japanese lore, peoples auras change as their lives do. When a baby is first born, they have a warm yellow aura. As they grow older, it transitions through orange and into the busy red of a working life. As life slows down, they transition to purple, and then once they retire, their aura becomes blue, representing the blues of being on the last leg of life. Just before the green aura of death, representing ones soul returning to nature...
Cyan aura.

Kokkuri-san?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've always been drawn to the eerie charm of Japanese folklore. Especially the stories of foxes and their tricks. It's no surprise then that I ended up creating a character based on the Kokkuri-San legend for my RPG campaign. There's something about the way the foxes are portrayed in Japanese legends that really speaks to me. Maybe it's the idea of a cunning creature outwitting humans, or maybe it's the mystique surrounding the kitsune-tsuki possession. Either way, I find myself constantly gravitating towards these tales. Perhaps there's a bit of fox in me too, always playing my own games of deception.
For those who don't know, the Kokkuri-San legend is about a divination game where players can contact the spirit of a fox. The fox, in turn, will answer questions about the future or even possess the player. It's a spooky tale that's been retold in many different ways, and one that continues to fascinate me.

The Cat Proposed
Tumblr media
The Cat Proposed
By Dento Hayane
A cute story about an overworked office worker who meets a bakeneko-  shapeshifting cat from Japanese folklore- while on his way home from work.
I originally read this back in 2022, but I want to use this blog to go back and talk about some of the books I read during previous reading challenges.
This book holds a special place for me because I had a hard time picking up reading again after college. I would try and read, maybe finish 1 or 2 books a year, but in 2022 I went to Barnes and Noble for the first time in years and while my aunt drank coffee in the café I walked around the store and found myself in the manga section. It has all gone downhill (or uphill) from there. I love the story, the feeling of being an overworked and underappreciated office worker is relatable, and the art style is pretty. The addition of the folklore element was an extra amazing bonus.

Some very atmospheric stuff is to show up on GoH this week, so here we go with a flashback of probably my favorite ambient album on the label...
GoH-084: Ilya Delire - Higanbana
A massive work of dreamy dark drones, field recordings and ambient built around a story took from Japanese folklore.

This week's Fantasmical Fridays Yokai edition is the Nurikabe. In Japanese folklore they are invisible walls that would block people on their paths. There were some early illustrations of what some artists believed it would look like. I made my version much cuter than some early interpretations where they're shown a bit more grotesque looking.
