I watched American Born Chinese, and it is an enjoyable series, honestly. It's silly and fun but it's also a show with a really big heart, it's a show that doesn't take itself too seriously but also makes a point to open important conversations regarding culture and identity, typecasting/stereotyping, the importance of speaking out for yourself, the struggle of breaking the glass ceiling in industries, etc. I also love the many references the show made to art/media forms, like the manga, sitcom, and xianxia, so it's like a study in intertextuality but also feels like a celebration of art. Overall, I could feel that this show was made with a lot of earnest love and thought, and I really hope it gets to tell its story in full!!

American Born Chinese
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
American Born Chinese (2023, USA)
Creator: Kelvin Yu (based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang)
Mini-review:
I loved this so much! Sure, it has its flaws, but its strengths far outweigh them. The show feels refreshing and almost groundbreaking thanks to the way it takes inspiration from Journey to the West and Chinese culture. With these elements, the show gets to tell a fantastic story about coming of age and finding your identity. It also tackles the topic of representation head-on, with a beautiful monologue by Ke Huy Quan in one of the last episodes. I can't think of many TV shows that talk so frankly about this, and American Born Chinese deserves big kudos for that.
But the main reason why this show is a hit is its cast. For starters, we have legends like Michelle Yeoh, the aforementioned Ke Huy Quan and Daniel Wu. Obviously, they are as great as anyone would expect from them. But the young cast also delivers: Ben Wang's comedic timing is perfect, and Jimmy Liu pretty much steals the show with an incredibly charming and adorable performance. On top of all this, the action scenes are fantastic, with amazing choreographies and very stylish and cinematic direction. Also, I thought this was supposed to be a limited series, but I guess it's not? I'm not complaining, cause I really enjoyed it, but I hope it's doesn't end up being cancelled.
P.S. Why the f**k is Disney+ not promoting the hell out of this? They have Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu from Everything Everywhere All At Once, plus Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed the Shang-Chi movie, and they are doing nothing to promote it. It's seriously baffling.

American Born Chinese (prod. Kelvin Yu).
Disney+'s series adaptation of Gene Luen Yang's acclaimed 2006 graphic novel takes an Asian-American approach to its Chinese mythological lore. How the Yu brothers and Destin Daniel Cretton translate ancient cultural touchstones to an all-American contemporary high school setting blends its pop culture material mostly fluidly, but also sort of flattens the source materials cultural appeal.

last song: Too Darn Hot by Ella Fitzgerald, though I will take any excuse to mention Ann Miller’s spectacular tap-dancing number from Kiss Me Kate
currently watching: Ted Lasso (again), for fic reasons. I don’t watch a lot of TV because I haven’t got much time for it. The last non-Ted Lasso show I saw was American-Born Chinese, which I have a lot of thoughts about so please come yell at me if you want to hear about Chinese mythology, the nuances between different Chinese accents and the sheer unadulterated excellence of Yeo Yann Yann
currently reading: I read multiple books at once - I’m presently in the middle of London Orbital, Iain Sinclair’s account of walking around the M25 (great for him, I’m glad he did it so nobody else has to); I have just finished Natascha Bruce’s translation of Owlish by Dorothy Tse, a dark fable set in a phantasmagorical version of Hong Kong; and I am starting The House Of Doors by Tan Twan Eng, about a murder case in 1920s Penang
current obsession: Ted Lasso, Shakespeare and art in the apocalypse for all the men and women merely players, an object lesson in how the most random one-off ideas can balloon into ridiculous epics that have you tearing your hair out over rereading the Henriad and researching Manchester tunnel networks

I marathoned through #AmericanBornChinese on Disney+. I mostly disliked Jin Wang the main character but I loved his mom played by Yeo Yann Yann and I loved Guanyin played by Michelle Yeoh. And Ke Huy Quan? That man is a treasure.

Michelle Yeoh is a mythological goddess in the new Disney+ series American Born Chinese. Based on the genre-hopping graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, Disney unveiled a featurette of the new series during the D23 Expo.
“It’s a lot of fun, it’s a log of magic, it’s a lot of badass action,” Yeoh says in the clip which you can view in the video above. Yeoh adds later on, “It is a magical ride and that’s what Disney+ is all about.”
American Born Chinese tells the story of Jin Wang (Ben Wang), an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life. When he meets a new student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.
Joining Wang are Yeo Yann Yann as Christine Wang, Chin Han as Simon Wang, Ke Huy Quan as Freddy Wong, Jimmy Liu as Wei-Chen, Sydney Taylor as Amelia with Daniel Wu as Sun Wukong “The Monkey King” and Yeoh as Guanyin.
Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers) serves as executive producer and showrunner. Destin Daniel Cretton (Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is set to direct and serves as executive producer, alongside Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.), Erin O’Malley (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.), Asher Goldstein (Short Term 12) and Gene Luen Yang. The Disney Branded Television series is produced by 20th Television, part of Disney Television Studios.
Guest directors for the show include Peng Zhang (Episode 4) and Lucy Liu (Episode 6).
American Born Chinese is expected to be released on Disney+ in 2023.

Wet Season https://bit.ly/3wcNVes More tales of emotional desperation from Anthony Chen, Wet Season follows 2013’s Ilo Ilo, using a couple of the same actors from his brilliant debut to squeeze a single drop of comfort from a scenario that would have been a full-bore histrionic melodrama in other hands.
