TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
American Born Chinese (2023, USA)
Creator: Kelvin Yu (based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang)
Mini-review:
I loved this so much! Sure, it has its flaws, but its strengths far outweigh them. The show feels refreshing and almost groundbreaking thanks to the way it takes inspiration from Journey to the West and Chinese culture. With these elements, the show gets to tell a fantastic story about coming of age and finding your identity. It also tackles the topic of representation head-on, with a beautiful monologue by Ke Huy Quan in one of the last episodes. I can't think of many TV shows that talk so frankly about this, and American Born Chinese deserves big kudos for that.
But the main reason why this show is a hit is its cast. For starters, we have legends like Michelle Yeoh, the aforementioned Ke Huy Quan and Daniel Wu. Obviously, they are as great as anyone would expect from them. But the young cast also delivers: Ben Wang's comedic timing is perfect, and Jimmy Liu pretty much steals the show with an incredibly charming and adorable performance. On top of all this, the action scenes are fantastic, with amazing choreographies and very stylish and cinematic direction. Also, I thought this was supposed to be a limited series, but I guess it's not? I'm not complaining, cause I really enjoyed it, but I hope it's doesn't end up being cancelled.
P.S. Why the f**k is Disney+ not promoting the hell out of this? They have Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu from Everything Everywhere All At Once, plus Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed the Shang-Chi movie, and they are doing nothing to promote it. It's seriously baffling.

American Born Chinese (prod. Kelvin Yu).
Disney+'s series adaptation of Gene Luen Yang's acclaimed 2006 graphic novel takes an Asian-American approach to its Chinese mythological lore. How the Yu brothers and Destin Daniel Cretton translate ancient cultural touchstones to an all-American contemporary high school setting blends its pop culture material mostly fluidly, but also sort of flattens the source materials cultural appeal.

last song: Too Darn Hot by Ella Fitzgerald, though I will take any excuse to mention Ann Miller’s spectacular tap-dancing number from Kiss Me Kate
currently watching: Ted Lasso (again), for fic reasons. I don’t watch a lot of TV because I haven’t got much time for it. The last non-Ted Lasso show I saw was American-Born Chinese, which I have a lot of thoughts about so please come yell at me if you want to hear about Chinese mythology, the nuances between different Chinese accents and the sheer unadulterated excellence of Yeo Yann Yann
currently reading: I read multiple books at once - I’m presently in the middle of London Orbital, Iain Sinclair’s account of walking around the M25 (great for him, I’m glad he did it so nobody else has to); I have just finished Natascha Bruce’s translation of Owlish by Dorothy Tse, a dark fable set in a phantasmagorical version of Hong Kong; and I am starting The House Of Doors by Tan Twan Eng, about a murder case in 1920s Penang
current obsession: Ted Lasso, Shakespeare and art in the apocalypse for all the men and women merely players, an object lesson in how the most random one-off ideas can balloon into ridiculous epics that have you tearing your hair out over rereading the Henriad and researching Manchester tunnel networks

I marathoned through #AmericanBornChinese on Disney+. I mostly disliked Jin Wang the main character but I loved his mom played by Yeo Yann Yann and I loved Guanyin played by Michelle Yeoh. And Ke Huy Quan? That man is a treasure.

My mom and I finished American born Chinese last night and I think she really liked it. As for me I liked it too. Here are some of my thoughts
1. I think the best actor in it was maybe jin’s mom christine, followed by either Jamie yao or Jin’s dad Simon. Whenever they were onscreen I really felt their scenes. Yeo yann yann, ke huy quan, and chin han were all really good. The three times I almost cried watching the show it was because of the three of them. The first being when Simon spoke up for their family in the principal’s office. He’s always had trouble with speaking up about anything or even with just expressing himself outside of the house, and it was probably still hard for him then and he looked tired and hurt but he was able to do it. And then when christine and Simon were at the parking lot and she thanks him for speaking up, it really got to me. Because throughout the show she always pushed him to speak up, pushed him to do more, and maybe she realized then that it really wasn’t so easy outside of the house, since she wasn’t able to do it herself back at the office, but mostly she probably just genuinely felt grateful. And when jamie said, “my parents were heroes”…I really very nearly lost it.
2. I don’t really think this is a big issue but it is something you notice if you speak mandarin and it’s that some of the characters that speak in mandarin, in varying degrees throughout the characters, their mandarin can be somewhat awkward 😅 it doesn’t really put me off much, but if I’m being completely honest it does distract me a little bit when I’m watching. My mom commented the same thing too. Again not really a big issue, I suppose it’s just me nitpicking a bit, but you do notice it if you speak the language.
3. A part of me wishes they had a more accurate representation of the original story of journey to the west. For example from my understanding and correct me if I’m wrong, in the original sun wukong didn’t steal the jingu bang. The dragon queen approved of him getting it, and even with the other versions of the staff I think it was either given to him as well or was borrowed so that he could fight. And this is kind of relevant because in ABC niu mowang says to sun weichen, “know how your dad got the staff? He stole it. That’s right, he’s no better than any of us”. Again, just me nitpicking, it’s not a big deal. I still enjoyed the show very much, I don’t actually mind that they deviated from it, I just think it would’ve been cool to see a truer version of the storytelling too.
4. Very cool fight scenes. I wish they had more. Look at the cast! They’re perfect for them.
Overall a great show. A shame it was cancelled after the first season. There’s so much more to explore ;;;; But the story ending with tieshan gongzhu threatening Jin is interesting too. A good example of yinguo or karma 😅 I’ll definitely watch if they ever make a second season!

Michelle Yeoh is a mythological goddess in the new Disney+ series American Born Chinese. Based on the genre-hopping graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, Disney unveiled a featurette of the new series during the D23 Expo.
“It’s a lot of fun, it’s a log of magic, it’s a lot of badass action,” Yeoh says in the clip which you can view in the video above. Yeoh adds later on, “It is a magical ride and that’s what Disney+ is all about.”
American Born Chinese tells the story of Jin Wang (Ben Wang), an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life. When he meets a new student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.
Joining Wang are Yeo Yann Yann as Christine Wang, Chin Han as Simon Wang, Ke Huy Quan as Freddy Wong, Jimmy Liu as Wei-Chen, Sydney Taylor as Amelia with Daniel Wu as Sun Wukong “The Monkey King” and Yeoh as Guanyin.
Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers) serves as executive producer and showrunner. Destin Daniel Cretton (Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is set to direct and serves as executive producer, alongside Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.), Erin O’Malley (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.), Asher Goldstein (Short Term 12) and Gene Luen Yang. The Disney Branded Television series is produced by 20th Television, part of Disney Television Studios.
Guest directors for the show include Peng Zhang (Episode 4) and Lucy Liu (Episode 6).
American Born Chinese is expected to be released on Disney+ in 2023.
