A Time Called You
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
A Time Called You (2023, South Korea)
Director: Kim Jin Won
Writer: Choi Hyo Bi
Mini-review:
Someday or One Day is one of my favorite dramas, so I was both excited and wary about this remake. I have to say it doesn't fully capture the unrepeteable magic of the original, but as far as remakes go, this is a really good one. They kept the plot and the characters almost intact, and that's why it works. This story is just really f**king good, so as long as you stick to its essence, there's no way you'll end up with a bad show. This version is a bit more confusing, though, since they had to cut and sum up some stuff to fit everything into 12 one-hour episodes, but it still works. The acting is pretty great too. Jeon Yeo Been pulls off the dual role with ease, and I was pleasantly surprised by Ahn Hyo Seop's performance (although nobody will ever top Alice Ko and Greg Hsu). Tbh, my biggest complaint is the cinematography. This remake looks so bland and lifeless when compared to the original. Anyway, I had fun reliving this story through a slightly different lense, and I think A Time Called You will be immensely loved by k-drama fans who haven't watched the masterful original.

Parasite - A Divide In Class
Tumblr media
Title – Parasite (2019)
Director – Bong Joon-Ho
Cast – Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Jang Hye-jin
Plot – Parasite revolves around the Kim family of four living below the poverty line, struggling to make ends meet. But then (!!) the son of the family, Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik), gets a business venture from his friend, Min (Park Seo-joon), to work as a tutor for the daughter of the rich, well-off Park family. This is the initial catapult into this story… Slowly (but surely), the Kims worm their way into the lives of the Parks like parasites…
At its core, this film is a social commentary on the deep-rooted societal issues of class division and economic inequality present in South Korea. It gives insight into the divide between the two classes and serves as a device to portray the grim contrast of the ever-growing gap between the rich and the poor. Parasite is a story that doesn’t necessarily have villains or heroes, just people who are products of their environments. This thriller-comedy explores the lengths people will go to support their families.
Before I delve into these influential characters that were created for this film, I want to address the recent passing of Lee Sun-kyun. Lee played the role of Park Dong-ik, the patriarch of the Park family, and he did an exceptional job of portraying a pompous businessman. Sadly, the actor took his own life on the 27th of December, 2023. This came as quite a shock, not only in South Korea but to the rest of the world. Lee Sun-kyun was a well-known K-drama actor known for his notable role in Coffee Prince (Lee Yoon-jung, 2007). The circumstance revolving around his death is one that I hope gives South Koreans an awakening to the worrisome problem of famous Korean stars feeling pressure into committing suicide as the only option for their personal issues. Lee Sun-kyun will be remembered as an outstanding actor.
The cast of this film worked insanely well together, which is reflected in how the characters interacted with one another. Each character brings a different aspect and perspective to the story.
Park Yeon-kyo (Cho Yeo-jeong), the mother of the affluent family, fell for the scheme of the Kim family, thinking that she was making the best choices for her family. While this can be seen as wrongdoing by the Kims, they were left in a dire situation where this seemed like the best option. The system they are living in South Korea does not favour them, so why should they oblige to it?
From a technical standpoint, Parasite exceeds all expectations for a successful film. Places where this film truly excels are in the use of sets and props. One prop detail that stands out to me is the waste bin in the Park household. It can be a detail that is easily overlooked, but the waste bin is completely silent and only for $2300! This is obviously quite a hefty price for a bin, and Bong Joon-ho thought so as well, stating that he “and my (his) crew members were like: ‘What the f**k? What kind of idiot would buy a trash can that’s going to smell anyway?” The absurdity of the price of the bin is funnily enough fitting to something that would definitely be in the Park’s house.
Bong Joon-Ho is able to convey his message in the division of class between the Kims and Parks through the different sets for their houses. The Kim family live in a basement flat at the bottom of a hill, symbolising how they are at the lowest, not only literally but also financially. They are crammed into a filthy apartment that is regularly mentioned as being pungent, to the point where it leaves a smell on them. Meanwhile, the Park family lives near the top of a hill, representing their financial prospects. This house is depicted as a grand architectural masterpiece that is always clean and tidy, thanks to the domestic housekeeper.
Bong Joon-Ho truly created a cinematic masterpiece with this film, and I am not saying this to be biased; he literally did. Parasite received the Palme d’Or from the Cannes Film Festival and four Academy Awards from the Oscars, including the ones for Best Picture and Best Directing. Bong achieved an incredibly difficult feat by receiving the most prestigious awards, and all for the same film. This mass international recognition from a South Korean film to a Western audience was a challenge, considering the language barrier, but despite that, in a historical moment, Parasite was the first non-English film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. All these awards only further prove how Bong Joon-Ho is one the most credible and decorated directors of this age in cinema.
Concluding Thoughts – In the end, Parasite is a film that was deserving of all the awards and praise it received. I’m embarrassed to say it took me four years after its initial release to view the film; I feel that I missed out on its original hype, but regardless of that, I am very glad I thoroughly enjoyed it. This film captivates through brilliantly thought-through dark humour in a way that many other films strive to. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has yet to watch it!
My final rating – ★★★★★

(I forgot I had written out the entire lore of this drama)
----
Fictional sageuk drama script idea : "우정가", a tale of 5 young gisaengs (entertainers) who form a pseudo-idol group together. A tale of friendship, trust and music.
A gisaeng was a mostly female entertainer in the Joseon era. Belonging to the lowest class of citizens, the *cheonmin*, they were trained in fine arts, needlework and medicine, sang, danced, and entertained through poetry and prose, as well as sometimes sold their bodies to the higher classed (yangban) men, for a living, or worked at the royal court as courtesans.
In this fictional drama, I want to see 5 young girls from different backgrounds of the Joseon society try and break the glass box they were held in as gisaengs through friendship, wisdom and innovation. Now I do not claim this historically accurate at all - which modern sageuk even is? - but come on, there has to be *some*one that must have rebelled at least a little bit. I know they were punished. But still.
Timeline wise, I would want to set this in the later Joseon era as the three tier system of the gisaengs (일패 - rank one to 삼패, rank three) would exist by then. To be exact, let's say during the reign of Sukjong of Joseon (1674 - 1720). I personally feel like it would be fitting to put a story of women in an era where politics was deeply influenced by the women of the palace. And if the name "Sukjong" doesn't already ring a bell, the name " Jang Ok-jung", a.k.a. "Jang Hee-bin", or "Royal Consort Hee of the Jang family" will definitely ring a bell for Kdrama lovers. Often nicknamed "Joseon's femme fatale", this concubine of King Sukjong wrote her name in history by her beauty, greed, power hunger and her tragic ending. She has been portrayed in popular media more than 10 times as the lead role, by prolific actresses such as Yoon Yeo-jung, Jeon In-hwa, Jung Sun-kyung, Kim Hye-soo and Kim Tae-hee. It wouldn't be wrong to call Jang Hee-bin one of the most famous women in Joseon history.
With that in mind, I want to set the story in this era. Also, as someone who's head deep into "Ladies Of The Palace" (SBS 2001 traditional sageuk about the life of Joseon politician and former gisaeng herself, Jeong Nanjung), I want more female-oriented stories! So I decided this main cast is going to be just women.
My old Sageuk script, revised! ----- Madam Jung : Where is Yoo-hwa? She should have been here by afternoon. Myeong Ae: She's in the palace today I think the Prince has taken a liking to her. Madam Jung : I see. I hope she doesn't get swayed by the Prince to stay at the court. Mi Hee : Why? If the Prince likes her, she might receive a lot of money. And maybe she will become his concubine! Madam Jung : Not every gisaeng's path leads to the court. Yoo-hwa is too naive to get into politics, and is too skilled to be an entertainment to the Royal family. Jin Yi : I've heard that the Consort Hee of the Jang family is a very greedy woman. Yoo-hwa would suffer a lot if she gets in that woman's way. As someone who has seen her since she was young, I am worried. Jang Sook : Consorts are always greedy. I don't understand why. The court is splitting like a watermelon, the nation is being attacked on the shores, and these women give birth to four of five babies for what? For the land they receive? For their son to be the next king? So they can be the Queen Dowager and order their own son and the court around? Madam Jung : (raises hand) We are no one to judge someone else's situation and decisions in life. All we can do is live with it and give the children an example of how to,nor how not to, lead life.
Madam Jung : Cheon-geum-ah? Cheon-geum  : Yes, mother 네, 어머님 Madam Jung : You are the closest to the age of 16 among the training gisaengs. Am I right? Cheon-geum  : True, mother. Madam Jung : Then, have you decided on a gisaeng name yet? Cheon-geum  : No, mother. Madam Jung : Why so, when I have reminded you mamy times? Cheon-geum : (stutters slightly, in a quieter voice) I- I intend not to take on a gisaeng name, mother. Wol-hyang : (looks at Eui-hye with a look of worry) Madam Jung : May I know the reason? Cheon-geum  : (voice becoming more firm) My mother gave me a name that I think is fitting to me. I want to be a heavenly lyre player even when I'm a gisaeng. Please understand this young girl's wish, mother. Soon-ryeon : (leans over to Wol-hyang and whispers) when is her birthday? In how many months? Wol-hyang : ( noticing that Madam Jung jas noticed Soonryeon whispering, signals with her hand, 2 fingers. SR gives a look of "well, whatever" and continues eating.) Madam Jung : (slightly angry) So you think these reasons give you the freedom that your friends don't have? What makes you think you have a choice? Cheon-geum : (quiet but firm) None of the other girls were born to a gisaeng and raised to be one. I have never known anything else but being a gisaeng. How can I change my name? Madam Jung : (breathes in sharply) Listen here, child... Mi-hee : (signals to Madam Jung to let her deal with it) Cheon-geum-ah, think again. All of us have gisaeng names. Hwa-myeong : I am also the daughter of a gisaeng. I know that you're proud of your name, but I'm sure your mother would appreciate it if you followed the tradition. Myeong-ae : ... it is, in the end, what she did too. It wouldn't be wrong to do so. Hwa-myeong : You think it would be disrespectful to your mother, isn't it? Cheon-geum  : (nods timidly) Mi-hee : I can assure you, it isn't. In fact, I'm sure your mother, if she were here, would tell you to leave your pride behind and do the same as all your seniors, and be a honourable gisaeng. You understand? Cheon-geum  : (lowers her head at the sudden interjection of the seniors, embarrassed) I understand. I will think about it. Madam Jung : Lift your head up. I will give you time until the day before your 17th birthday. Have you understood? Cheon-geum  : Yes, mother.
Jang Sook : Madam, isn't it commonplace to name the girls as soon as they enter the gyobang? Madam Jung : You are right, Mrs. Jang. But I feel like a child should be able to enjoy her name before having it taken away from her. Jin-yi : This gyobang really seems like the only one in the kingdom to do so. Jang Sook : I have heard of another gyobang in the Pyongyang region, where they allow the girls to choose which field they study in, isn't that good too, madam? Madam Jung : I disagree with that. I know that some of the best gisaengs especially in dancing and singing have come from that gyobang, but the gisaengs there lack an all-round education. A gisaeng should be able to do anything. Myeong-ae : I agree, mother. There is no reason a gisaeng who excels at poetry would also excel at dancing. Soon-ryeon, Eui-hye and Hwa-jung : (look at  Wol-hyang with a smile, almost as if taunting her for her two left feet.  Wol-hyang lets out a sigh and stuffs her mouth with rice) Mi-hee : (notices  Wol-hyang, smiles) Mi-soon-ah (referring to Myeong-ae by her gisaeng name) , to realise you're wrong, you don't need to look far. Wol-hyang : (even more embarrassed, she cowers and keeps on stuffing rice into her mouth) Mi-hee : I'm sitting right here, am I not, mother? Wol-hyang : (surprised at the sudden relevation, looks up) Madam Jung : I remember. Mi-hee : (continues) There were days I practiced until my legs bruised, and I thought of Yoo-hwa (Yi-rin's gisaeng name) and cried, because I wasn't even as good as her toenail when it came to dancing. Myeong-ae : (laughs) And weren't there days I made the floor wet with my tears, as my voice cracked at all the songs, Geum-wol? Hwa-myeong : I remember crying while playing the drums - I hit my head with a drumstick. (laughter erupts across the room) . I got a big red boil on my head like an egg. It's practice, practice and again practice, that made us to be as skilled as we are. (turns to Wolhyang) There's no need to worry at all. If there is a will, there is a way. (Wolhyang : bends her head, half in shame, half in relief. The seniors and Madam Jung smile, and everyone continues eating)
