The Burden of Fame
Jaune: *sips his drink*…and then Weiss said “Stardust, away!” and left both Yang and Ruby stuck in the ice!
Pyrrha: *wearing a disguise of fake glasses, a beanie, and her hair in a bun* Oh, I wish I could’ve seen that! We were all so silly back in our first year! 🤣 *quickly finishes her beer*
Jaune: Hey, better not drink too fast! Don’t want anyone to see the Invincible Girl get drunk in public!
Pyrrha: *fixes her fake glasses* Oh, don’t worry so much! I’m wearing a clever disguise after all! 🥸
Jaune: Sorry! Sometimes the ol’ anxiety acts up…
Pyrrha: *leans against him* Well mister, good thing your Invincible Girlfriend is here to chase the anxiety away!
Jaune: 😘 Well, how could I ever-
Paparazzo: Pyrrha Nikos! If I could just ask a few questions!
Pyrrha: …oh great…so much for my clever disguise…
Jaune: Uh, do you mind? We’re kind of on a date here-
Paparazzo: *interrupting and talking quickly* Miss Nikos, is it true that you’re sneaking around with this mystery man and keeping your relationship secret from your fans?
Jaune: Hey! That’s kinda rude to ask-
Pyrrha: *trying to tune out the questions* 😑
Paparazzo: Are you in disguise because you’re ashamed to be seen with your current boyfriend, or is it possible that there is another person involved?
Pyrrha: 😤
Jaune: I’m RIGHT HERE! And Pyrrha would never-
Paparazzo: And is it true that you have yet to meet this mystery man’s family? Is it because you plan to break up soon?
Jaune: Hey! That’s very rude and very personal!
Pyrrha: *thinking* Oh, I’d hoped Jaune and I could have a regular night out together without being bothered like this! Stupid celebrity gossip!!
Pyrrha: I’ve always tried to be polite to these interviews, but this man is ruining my evening! It’s time I put a stop to this once and for all!
Pyrrha: What would my friends do in this situation? 🤔
Jaune: …Pyrrha, are you okay?
Pyrrha: *calmly reaches for her beer bottle*
Pyrrha: *flips her hand over and grips the bottle neck like a club*
———————————————————————
Jaune: …and then I used my one phone call to call you.
Mama Arc: *arms folded, looking through the bars of holding cell* 🤨
Pyrrha: *absolutely mortified, face in her hands*🫣 I’m never taking advice from Yang or Nora ever again!
Mama Arc: *sighs* This is not how I pictured meeting my son’s girlfriend…

Yang and Pyrrha paying for everyone hc my beloved
Pyrrha canonically has her picture on pumpkin petes cereal so I personally believe they sponsor her like an influencer and that’s how her team gets money and maybe jaune could get small job but I doubt Pyrrha would let him, mr broke into beacon needs to focus on his studies a LOT
Neither ren or Nora would be able to get through an interview and I truly believe that also I believe they’d just rather help Pyrrha get more sponsors influencer style
I think Weiss would get in a lot of trouble from her father if she got a job plus with her notoriety it might actually make it really hard to get a normal job
Blake “known terrorist” belladonna gotta keep her head down
Ruby’s got younger sibling privileges of expecting your older sibling to pay for everything
I love broke college student centric ideas for the beacon era teams

If the fact that I made 30+ memes about the topic didn’t make it clear enough, I’ve basically gone half feral over grizzled Rusted Knight Jaune. I can’t wait to learn more about his time in the Ever After and how he’s changed.
And yes, I do believe that he is the Rusted Knight from Alyx’s story, not just his heir or replacement. Maybe that will wind up not being the case, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Tumblr media
But do you know what’s really wild about Jaune being the Rusted Knight?
Everyone knows who he is. ‘The Girl who Fell Through the World’ is obviously a classic that’s been read by just about everyone as children. All of his friends, his classmates, his family, those kids he walked to and from school in Mantle. Hell, even their parents.
Everyone knows who he is.
Imagine Blake listening to Kali or Ghira read her the story, waiting for her favorite part: when the Rusted Knight rides in on his Jackelope to save Alyx from the Jabberwalker.
Imagine Weiss daydreaming about a knight riding to the rescue of his princess on the back of a big bunny, sweeping her up in his arms and riding off into the sunset to live their happily ever after.
Imagine Yang eagerly listening to Tai or Summer describe the knight clashing with the Jabberwalker and cheering when he strikes it down. Imagine Ruby being inspired by the Rusted Knight to be just like him: a hero who’s always there when they’re needed.
Imagine Pyrrha wanting to become the very best warrior just like him, unaware that she would play a role in forging his legend.
Imagine Nora and Ren huddled up together in a cave, taking shelter from a storm and reading about how the Rusted Knight fought and slew the big monster, taking comfort in the fact that at least in the fairy tails the heroes always win.
And imagine Jaune with a toy shield and sword, pretending he’s the rusted knight, being carried on his father’s shoulders as he duels with an imaginary Jabberwalker, unaware that he’s recreating his own battles.
Imagine Cinder huddled under her thin sheets, reading the book by moonlight and wishing a knight would take her away to a magical world where everything was okay.
Imagine Emerald reading the story of the Ever After from a book she stole, using it to teach herself how to read word by word.
Imagine Mercury wishing a knight would fight his Jabberwalker and protect him from his own father.
Just think about how Blake of all people reacted when he arrived to fight the Jabberwalker. She was giddy with excitement at seeing one of her childhood heroes in the flesh. If Jaune hadn’t removed his helmet, she probably would have asked for his autograph.
From Vale to Menagerie, the children of Remnant know the story of Alyx’s journey, and they know the Rusted Knight. When they play Ever After they argue over who gets to be the Rusted Knight and fight the Jabberwalker. And some of those children, knowingly or otherwise, are influenced by him to grow up and fight their own world’s monsters, to become huntresses and huntsmen, to be the defenders of Remnant and the shield between the innocent and the Grimm. Just like how the Rusted Knight has defended the Ever After from the Jabberwalker.
Jaune is one of Remnant’s childhood heroes. And I think that’s beautiful.
And yes, I did cry a bit while writing this. Thank you for asking.

Summer, Pyrrha and James
Ruby: Yes Ratchetmath is defending us today.
Me: Nah don't get it twisted ya'll still guilty but for once I am going to have to expose James for a minute. He's understandable but not innocent. Plus I made a promise and I'm keeping it so if you want to continue then go on. @arkosfan @expensiveeggplant
Okay, I do think it's time to keep my promise. Let’s talk about Summer and Pyrrha’s deaths and how they influence the characters. Then we talk about James's actions.
Both Summer and Pyrrha's deaths should matter. But, only to the characters that were close to them.
Summer's death was supposed to be or still is a mystery. Her death is assumed to matter to Ruby. Not only because she was a silver-eyed warrior and Ruby’s mom but because it goes back to Salem. After all, Salem met Summer and probably was the one who saw and killed her. And Summer was why Ruby became a huntress in the first place. An example is her fighting and clothing style. Now Summer’s death is being brought up more often and not knowing anything about her, Ruby sets out to uncover Summer's demise with each new detail dictating her next move.
Pyrrha's death should have mattered to Jaune. Pyrrha’s death serves as a reminder that not even the strongest can survive war like Summer. Jaune, realizing that he has to continue without her, rises to the challenge to become more powerful than herself. However, for him, how his partner and team are treated and how the world, mainly the ones in charge, react will determine Jaune’s next moves. This is due to Pyrrha’s death being very recent and so far the world has gone to madness.
Now let’s discuss James Ironwood. James’s plan was debatable at best. I understand the overall goal was to use Amity Arena to broadcast to the entire world of Salem's existence. However the price- the means to get there was horrible. Not just for Mantle but the world.
First, Beacon; This man brought his army into Vale. Turned the Council against Ozpin. And is one of the people who saw Pyrrha and spoke of the maiden powers under Jaune’s nose. As soon as his army fails and Salem wins, he leaves. Leaving Goodwitch to clean up the mess.
Second, the world. I mean, James called in all of his troops, scattered around Remnant, to return to Atlas. This stopped trading routes. Businesses that relied on them to cease operations. Worse, lessens security around the kingdoms. Meaning more work for hunters and council members to deal with. So sorry, James’s fan but Nora and Jaune were speaking straight facts.
Speaking of Jaune and Nora, let’s discuss James’s effect on the two teams.
For team RWBY James had more of a positive effect. James did more right for team RWBY than JNPR. Letting Ruby off with a pass and even praising her for her bravery. Giving Yang a pardon even though she struck a supposed student, breaking his leg, and not going to a holding cell. Giving Yang an arm. Backing up Weiss, even offering her a place at his school in Atlas. Blake though not receiving anything from Ironwood, hearing all his effort from her team would get her to side with him. So it’s insane why they're more against Ironwood than JNPR who he hasn’t done much for.
Team JNPR so far when it came to James had a negative effect. Mainly he’s the one halting their progress. He hasn’t done anything specially for them. And again, if he knew about Salem, the maidens, and relics, what makes you think he didn’t know about Pyrrha? Hence why I didn’t like Ren's development where he sides with Ironwood so easily, only because he reminds him of his dad. Nora had reason for Robyn was more understandable than Ren’s. Meanwhile, the only reason Jaune trusts him is because he trusts Roby. In my opinion team JNPR should have been the main ones against him.
(Oh and let's not forget, team RWBY were the ones who missed up but James was willing to give them an option. I don’t recall him giving team JNPR any options at all. )
Now let’s discuss Mantle and Atlas. Mainly the difference between them. In Mantle, there are lower-class citizens living there. And thanks to James, most of the people have no jobs. Barely enough money to get by. And are attacked by Grimm every day. Meanwhile, Atlas has a barrier and ships defending them. The people are living peacefully and are throwing parties. Hell one kid, in RWBY Arrowfell, was sitting on the sidewalk to watch a fight. Minor but still this shows me Atlas is doing better than Mantle.
Yes, James does help Mantle with security. However, he sends a majority of robots to do the job. The same robots used to protect Beacon. The same robots that failed and nearly destroyed the kingdom of Vale. And another key detail about Mantle; it’s outdated. Everything from the Manlte’s homes and its street; which are in poor condition. To its wall; that doesn’t work cause Grimm can climb or fly over it. And its technology; which is from the military and the Schnee Dust Company. Not to mention the people of Mantle are being watched, killed, and/or arrested every few times a day. That includes the giant ships hovering over them while surrounding Atlas.
(I don’t know about you, but if I was living in Mantle and saw not one, not two but thousands of ships above me and near Atlas, I would be scared. Because that’s giving me the impression that you are willing to destroy my home or that a war is coming that you don’t want me to find out about.)
But you know what makes this worse…. Amity Arena was James’s only plan. It was his ONLY plan, and the heroes took no processions to make sure the plan stayed on course. And when as Ironwood said,” The timeline has changed”, he was ready to lift Atlas into space. Abandoning not just Mantle, but Remnant as a whole. Someone once said, “The needs of the many matters more than the few”, let's ask this, “If you were to compare the two cities, which of them has the most people?” And I recall Mistral, Argus, and Vale have people too so… who’s the many and whose the few?
(Nah-nah. Let me say this. Let me say this. In volume 8, the first episode Pietro said Amity was almost ready in fact it only took a couple of hours. So this made me question something, how was Robyn slowing down their progress? Because it seems despite her interference she wasn’t causing too many problems. Yet Tyrian who works for Salem, has a criminal record and has been killing people left and right wasn’t on the main character’s priority list. Are you kidding me?)
So yeah, James undoubtedly had questionable methods. He had the right idea however the risk it took to bring this idea to life should not be overlooked, regardless of Salem's planned attack on Vale. James’s action only justified the world's hatred towards him and his military. Basically, even if his plan succeeded no one would have claimed done. No kingdom would simply give him their trust or aid. The sad truth is Atlas deserved to fall due to its own ignorance.
(And if you don’t believe me let me give an example. Adam who has an SDC mark on his face and mainly the mine workers are Faunues. Ilia’s parents died in a mining accident and Atlassian students just laughed about it. And then Cinder, who was a slave to her stepmom and her daughters when she was a kid and no one helped her. )

You can damn well be sure that they’d never give this kind of lip to Ren/Nora or Jaune/Pyrrha.
It’s a frustrating combination of people being obsessed with the idea that romance is only romance when a kiss is involved, despite romance being far more complex and nuanced than that, and the simple fact that queer relationships are held up to a ridiculous standard that they can always move the goalposts around to ensure that they can always be “holier than thou” for any number of arbitrary reasons.
Nobody ever questions if Ren and Nora love each other. Nobody questions if Jaune and Pyrrha loved each other.
And frankly more often than not the only queer relationships these people “accept” are the ones that are either out of the way, where the people are dead, or only in fanfics where they can rationalize that it doesn’t influence THEIR canon. That it’s just a fantasy and that the world is as heteronormative as it “SHOULD” be.
But the minute anything doesn’t fit in those categories? When they have to canonically acknowledge that queer people are important and exist ins pure of their bigotry? They lose it hard. They get all passive aggressive or openly aggressive. They become judge, jury and executioner of all that is the “right way” to be queer.
As an asexual lesbian I find the idea that a kiss is the ONLY way to show love very offensive. Blake & Yang are just so, so soft around each other, the gentle touches, the loving looks tells me everything I need to know about their relationship.
While I'm sure they will kiss, it has to be the right time. It wasn't for either Arkos or Renora whose first kisses were harbingers of disaster.
I want their first kiss to be more than that. I want it to be pure happiness.
I'm so happy that this show trusts us enough to see what's actually going on rather than taking the lazy route. I think what's going on between them is just so beautiful and sweet.

Alright let’s do this
Since you are saying I have a flawed perspective and don’t understand Jaune and Weiss
First of all, Weiss never said she admired Jaune’s goodness in V9
She told him that all great huntsman have failed and they were still incredibly brave and good
She is telling Jaune that he is still a good person
Secondly, the whole “wasn’t interested in who he is” was because she has never once shown interest in him until he was revealed to be the RK
Thirdly, yes, Jaune hasn’t helped in Weiss personal issues
The beacon dance is different because it wasn’t something that was integral to Weiss growth or helped her to become who she is now
We don’t get a callback to that scene and don’t really see Weiss be all that affected or changed by that moment
Jaune doesn’t help Weiss in any of her emotional or personal issues like Her confronting her father after her return to Atlas or Weiss being reassured and given a promise that her team will always be by her side in Atlas
He doesn’t help, But Ruby does
Fourthly and fifthly, Yes Jaune could love another person, hence my examples used for different people he could love
But it doesn’t make sense and doesn’t work when they just have him go back to the very same character that he has long since moved on from
The character he realized he didn’t like/love romantically and realized he actually like/love another
And as for the “doesn’t develop in V6 means it’s locked” I meant that if they wanted to developed the relationship they should’ve of done it in V6 or V7
The most opportune time to develop that relationship and to help Jaune grow and fully move on from Pyrrha/to help heal from that loss
But instead they chose to have Jaune heal and move on from Pyrrha’s death by having him heal with help of his found family (same in V9)
Now time for the whole “Pyrrha is the love of his life thing” because you were clearly not paying attention to the show
Jaune was in fact deeply in love with Pyrrha and it’s easy to say that Pyrrha was the love of his life when you think about a lot of things
Like how “Forever fall” a theme song for Jaune when it comes to his love for Pyrrha, consistently plays when it comes to something connecting Jaune to Pyrrha and the lyrics are literally him saying how Pyrrha was his “forever fall”, how their love is infinite, how not even death could separate their souls, how he found his joy in her, how it’s his destiny to be in love with her, and many more lyrics that imply something
There is the song “cold” which is literally another Arkos song
There is the fact that Jaune whole adding/fusing Pyrrha’s equipment to him is literally symbolic of not Just Pyrrha’s influence but also the fact that Jaune and Pyrrha will never be separated even through death or how Jaune will always carry Pyrrha with him and have that love for her
You have Jaune literally having Pyrrha’s sash like how Yang or Taiyang literally have their own thing to contribute to their own respective lovers/love of their life
You have the JL movie where Jaune literally is so desperate to know if Pyrrha is real or not and holds her in a way that is romantic (not canon but it does show what the writers think)
You have Jaune having a similar vengeful and grief filled anger like Blake would have in V8 after she believes Yang has died (you know Yang, the love of Blake’s life)
Many different things that show how Pyrrha is possibly the love of his life, but I don’t know, guess I just don’t understand the character or have a flawed perspective
And let me say this, I’m literally not saying Jaune can’t have a love interest, I’m saying that Weiss doesn’t work and that the love of his life will always be Pyrrha
Because nobody will ever be able to replace Pyrrha for Jaune
Nobody will everybody be someone like Pyrrha was for Jaune (much like how nobody would ever be some like Blake was for Yang or Nora was for Ren)
Nobody will ever give Jaune the joy that Pyrrha did for Jaune
Nobody will ever be able to fill in that hole Pyrrha left for Jaune
That’s the tragedy of Arkos, Jaune has to live without the love of his life and has to continue moving forward and keep going, not just for him but to also keep on carrying Pyrrha’s memory and to always carry on Pyrrha legacy
For Pyrrha’s legacy and everything that she meant will always live within Jaune, same with her love

Note
re: that ask you posted a couple days ago about the male and female representation in RWBY, part of what makes RWBY's whole 'girl power' thing ring exceptionally hollow to me is the fact that there are like... no women in positions of real power in remnant. like at all. except the big bad.
winter is second in command to james. glynda is second in command to ozpin. all of the headmasters are men (for no discernible reason, imo; why theodore and not dorothea?). the leader of the ace ops was a white man (and then winter seemed to take over clover's position instead of either of the women of color on the team, and she was still second to james). RWBY is an all girl team, but JNPR was led by a boy despite a girl arguably being far more qualified (pyrrha). the happy huntresses are all women, and robyn had no real power to speak of--she didn't even manage to win the election, because jacques rigged it, and then the council ceased to matter. there was one (1) woman on the council, but she was so inconsequential that i can't even remember her name. (i suppose we're lucky it was the guy and not her who james shot lol) jacques controls the SDC instead of willow, even though he's not even a schnee by blood and actually married into the family for power. (and we don't even know how he got it over his wife.)
and then there's the white fang, which ghira led and not kali--and it's ghira who leads menagerie itself, while kali seems to be a housewife. sienna had five minutes of screentime before being brutally killed and her position assumed by adam, a man. cordovin is basically a one off lackey we haven't even thought about before or since. neo was second to roman. you have cinder, sure, who is a second but to salem, a woman, and raven as the leader of the branwen tribe--but what does it really say about your 'girl power' narrative when the only women with genuine systemic power in your world are villains or antagonists with massive bodycounts??
atla has the same sort of problem--a couple great female characters, but all the leadership positions are men (except the kyoshi warriors, an all girls group, and even then the leader of their island is an old man) and the one female mentor figure also turns out to be evil--but it at least has some great writing to help overlook that fact, and it came out in the mid-00's and so has some sort of excuse of being a product of its time. but rwby didn't even start until 2013 and it's still going and still making these kinds of decisions well into 2021.
where is this supposed girl power, exactly? am i really supposed to overlook the very patriarchal worldbuilding just because the title characters are girls?
That's an excellent summary of the situation, anon, and as with so much in RWBY, it comes down to the full context. Any one of these examples isn't necessarily going to mean much on its own. It's when you look at the pattern that you can start making a case for those conclusions: Why is the show marketed on "girl power" set in a world where men hold the vast majority of that power? And, more importantly, why is that setup not the point? We could easily have a story where that lopsided gender dynamic is the problem that the girls are looking to fix, but... that story doesn't exist. Like the problems discussed with Jaune, the supposed point here exists only on the surface. Dig just the tinniest bit — the above — and you hit on a lot of structural problems with this "girl power" world.
To add just a few details to what you've already said:
Salem indeed has power, but she's never allowed to fully use it. Each volume the frustration with this grows as Salem accumulates more abilities and then just sits on them. From literally hiding out for a thousand years to worries that she won't use the Staff in Volumes 9-10, Salem really isn't allowed to be the threat she's presented as on the surface. And yes, this is absolutely due in part to the "She's too OP and the writers don't know how to let her be that powerful while still having the heroes win" issue, but again, context. That problem doesn't exclude others occurring simultaneously.
Same double explanation with Summer. Yes, dead moms are an incredibly common trauma to dump on a protagonist, but it still left Yang and Ruby with Tai as their primary influence. And Qrow. The uncle becomes the extended family influence while Raven is the absent one/eventual antagonist. It's personal power as opposed to political power, but Tai, Qrow, Ozpin, formerly James... most of the mentors are men. Maria, a key exception, has been ignored in that regard. The story announced that she was Qrow's inspiration, setup her being Ruby's new mentor, and then... nothing. Nothing has come of that. She disappeared for a volume and then went off to Amity and was literally forgotten by the story when evacuating everyone was the finale's whole point.
Like that Endgame moment I mentioned, the Happy Huntresses feel a little too forced to me. Yes, it's the same basic idea as in ATLA, but ATLA, as you say, has a lot more going for it. The Happy Huntresses feel... on the nose? Idk exactly how to explain it. Like, "Here they are! Another team of all women! Isn't this how progressive storytelling works? Just ignore how this is a one-off team of minor characters compared to the world building issues discussed above." And if you're not paying attention, you miss just how insignificant they are, with a side of Robyn being, well, Robyn. The Kyoshi Warriors, at least, are based off of Kyoshi. A woman avatar who is a significant part of their history. That is, presumably, why they're an all women warrior group (but who notably still teach Sokka). The Happy Huntresses are all huntresses because...? There's no reason except that meta "We want to look progressive" explanation. Just like having all the women superheroes team up for a hot second so people get excited and ignore the representation problems across, what? 21 films? Don't get me wrong, I love that May is among the Happy Huntresses. I think including her in the explicitly all-women group was one of the better things RWBY has done in a long time, but the rest is still a mess.
RWBY is arguably about these smaller groups as opposed to systematic power (despite the writers trying to work that in with things like the White Fang and the election. Not to mention the implication that everything in Atlas is fine now that evil Ironwood has died and taken the symbol of wealth (the city) with him. We saw a human holding hands with a faunus after all. Racism and corruption solved, I guess.) So yes, our group is dominated by women... but Whitley is the one saving Nora, helping to defeat the Hound (plus Willow), thinking of the airships, and providing the blueprints they need to escape. Salem is our Big Bad, except Ironwood is the one the volume focuses on. Ruby is our leader, but Jaune is the one leading the group into the whale and getting praised for how heroic he is. Ren does more to shake things up, even if he's painted as the one in the wrong. Oscar gets to confront Salem and destroys the whale threat. Ozpin provides the information they need to evacuate. Meanwhile, when the girls do things in Volume 8 it's almost always followed by a long-stint of passiveness. Nora opens the door so she can be unconscious for most of the volume. Penny keeps Amity up so she can also be unconscious for a good chunk of time. Ruby sends her message and then sits in a mansion. Blake fights so she can tearfully beg Ruby to save her. Weiss, as said, takes a backseat to Whitley (and Klein). They forward the plot, absolutely, but comparatively it doesn't feel like enough.
It's that pattern then, no one specific example. More and more the personal power, not just the systematic power already built into Remnant, seems to be coming from the men. Not all the time, but enough that scenes like the tea drinking moment feel like a part of a much larger problem. Pietro taking control, Watts hacking, and Ambrosius literally remaking her when Penny is supposed to already be in control of herself and her fate. Winter being presented as the active mentor to Weiss, only to turn around and claim that Ironwood was actually responsible for everything. Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and May straight up commenting on how awful things are out there while Yang, Jaune, Ren, and Oscar lead the charge against Salem — with the latter three doing the most to forward that mission (no fear, semblance, cane). As others have only half-joked, Yang's supposedly badass moment was bringing up a mother she's ignored for six volumes and briefly blowing up the immortal woman for a couple of seconds (with Ironwood's bombs). Even Marrow is arguably the most significant Ace Op after Clover. Vine isn't actually a character, Elm slightly less so, Harriet is there to go crazy and try to drop a bomb (notably before admitting to never-before-existed feelings for Clover), but Marrow? He's the one who breaks out. Who is meant to heroically stand up against Ironwood. Who comments on how awful it is that teenagers are fighting and, regardless of how messed up the moral messages are, is supposedly pushing for active change while all the women in his group, including Winter, insist on maintaining the status quo. Look at all these choices as a whole, it makes throwaway worldbuilding choices like "All the Maidens are women" feel pretty hollow. Why does it matter if Amber is a Maiden if she dies in a flashback so Ozpin can struggle to pass on the power? If Pyrrha dies before becoming one so Jaune can angst about it? If Raven is one and then disappears from the story entirely? If Winter has enough power to break Ironwood's aura, but supposedly had no power throughout every other choice she made getting here? If Penny is one, but is continually controlled by men and then asks another man to help her die? It's just really unconvincing, once you look past the surface excitement of a woman looking cool with magic powers.
When you do consider the whole of the story — both in terms of our world building and who is forwarding the plot in the latter volumes, getting the emotional focus, being proactive, etc. — there are a lot of problems that undermine the presumed message RT wants to write. They say, "girl power" by marketing RWBY with these four women, but too many of the storytelling decisions thoroughly undermine that, revealing what's likely a deeply ingrained, subconscious bias.

Note
While I can't speak for shipping wars in other fandoms, I can say the ones in RWBY are particularly contentious because romance is so vague, underdeveloped, and deliberately coy on part of the writers. They realized that they could generate interest and money on teasing ships without committing and allowing their VAs to fan the flames with little tact. Ship priorities meant giving bumbleby boost at the expense of the plot itself. Like the White Fang ending so Blake is stuck hip to hip with Yang.
No lie, I think this for sure feeds the shipping wars in RWBY, because so many people feel the need to defend their ship's right to existence, not just their ship's personal worth.
More niche ships like Oscar x Whitley and Ren x Jaune can kind of exist in peace, and for a long time Renora was the Unquestionable ship (though recently that's kind of changed.) But things like WhiteRose, RoseGarden, Freezerburn, Elderburn, Ironqrow, Cloqwork, Monochrome, Ladybug, Nuts and Dolts, other big ships, and especially BlackSun and Bumbleby and now Fair Game have a lot of fans that have this drive and desire to prove that they have the right to ship it, and they try to use canon to prove it.
But the only shipping pairs who have actually had canon displays of openly romantic feelings on at least one side (meaning an open discussion of romantic feelings, an explicit date, or a kiss,) are Blake and Sun, Weiss and Neptune, Weiss and Jaune, Jaune and Pyrrha, and now recently Ren and Nora. And out of those, all of them are easily dismissed as unrequited with one person being less interested than the other, save for Ren and Nora, which only just got confirmed.
Some ships have more canon backing than the others, but the point is that the desire to prove how 'real and valid' ships are through canon is definitely influencing this just like you say. If someone makes a post about why they ship Blake and Sun, someone can come onto the post and rant about how stupid they are for not realizing that Blake only kissed Sun on the cheek and was only doing it as a friend and they only technically went out but Yang got the first dance. And then that BlackSun fan can shoot back at them that Yang and Blake have absolutely no canon backing yet and that everything they've done 'romantically' has been done by Anna and Elsa in the Frozen series. And then the Bumbleby fan can angrily hit back by talking about their ship was compared to Renora and Renora got canon backing in V7 and V8, and then a SugarRush fan can come in and say Ren and Nora broke up, and a Renora fan can start going off about how they didn't read their V8 scene as a breakup, and so on and so forth. I one hundred percent think that how vague the RWBY writers are have just fueled the fires of shipping wars.
But there's one other thing I think contributed to just how bad the shipping wars in RWBY can get. And it's that there is this mentality pushed in the fandom that you have to subscribe to the right opinions and you can't insult MKEK or suggest that they don't know what they're doing or aren't doing a good job.
So if a Freezerburn fan thinks Freezerburn makes more sense than Blake and Yang and posts about how they can't understand why the writers went with Bumbleby, they won't only get berated for 'being stupid' for not liking the bees, they'll also get bullied for rejecting canon, insulting MKEK, implying they know better, not realizing that the ship was planned from the beginning, just being bitter that their ship 'was never in the plan,' and so on and so forth. The idea that you can't go against canon and you can't criticize MKEK has made people all the more eager to prove that their ship has canon backing, and has made others all the more eager to refute these claims and prove that no ship but the one they like has any canon backing.
The whole thing is one big mess. XD

Since I've seen some people playing over here.
Maybe not the exact thing but probably a better done post about the race/ethnicity/nationality of RWBY characters
Let's start with some of the adults
Team STRQ:
Summer Rose: probably hispanic, argentinian? I kinda think she's either white latina or Asian latina. In my heart she's caribbean, I mean have you seen her design? Those hips aren't from being white
Taiyang: this one is kinda obvious, Asian. Completely Chinese. In my heart he's Asian latino, he just has an Honduran feeling with him.
Raven: at first I thought she was white, I've learned my lesson. She's Asian, I think Japanese? Who knows? She has a Russian/Uzbekistan feeling tho
Qrow: same with Raven, they are twins after all.
Team RWBY:
Ruby: ok so she's 100% Asian latina. Dad's Chinese, mom's argentinian, c'mon
Weiss: her name says it all, she's white. Like the most white character of them all, she's German. The only white girl in RWBY that we love.
Blake: she seems to be mixed? Japanese and Pacific Islander, there's a lot of elements of both cultures in her design and character. So Asian and Polynesian? I'm not sure about the Polynesian part so if someone could help me.
Yang: Asian, dad's Chinese, mom's Japanese c'mon. She's latina from heart cuz Summer is latina. Tho in my heart Yang's is actually Asian latina, tho Taiyang feels Honduran, Yang feels like she's Venezuelan.
Team JNPR:
Jaune: now, this one is a bit. Cuz in canon it seems he's French? But he just have an American vibe. Let's just put him French American... Wait... Canadian!! Jaune has a Canadian vibe, probably from Quebec or something
Pyrrha: this kinda obvious, she's Greek lol
Nora: she's nordic, Norway? Tho she gives me a Denmark with Finland vibes. I guess we can just say she's nordic.
Ren: my man is the only Asian of this team, F. Seems heavily influenced by Japanese design, tho he gives me Thailand vibes... Omg what if the dad was Japanese and the mom Thai?
Others:
Maria: obviously latina, she gives me a Cuba vibe, idk she just reminds me of all the Cubans I've meet
Oscar: idk why but I just feel he's from Bolivia or something, maybe is the farm thing, Bolivia has not ocean 💔 oh wait, he gives me some Peruvian vibes as well, I can see him eating ceviche. Idk if he's supposed to be African American cuz he gives me strong Black latino vibes
Cinder: is she supposed to be white? Cuz she gives me major Mexican vibes, tbh if it were for me everyone would be latino minus Weiss, she just is too white for even being white latina.
Emerald: ah yeah, this women right here? I'm between 2 asian countries and Egypt. I know she's supposed to allude to Aladdin but Palestinian Emerald tho. The other one I strongly feel is India
Penny: ok so she sees herself like she's a white girl even if her dad is black, you know who does that? Mexicans
Sun: my dude is Dominican, have you seen him? Always with the shirt open and he's NOSY as hell, that's Dominican men for you. Now in canon, I think he's Asian but idk which one, I feel probably Korean tho, in my heart he's Asian latino
Ironwood: he's white. British type of white. Is he supposed to be Asian as well? Cuz he just feels British to me
Edit: it came to my attention that Ironwood is mixed because he's modeled after his VA that's asian and white!

Motion Sickness Chapter 86
I asked out a girl and got rejected today. Stay safe, gentlemen. Ladies already know.
pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq
(Weiss's PoV)
"What happened to him?" I asked. I watched Cloud get carted away on a stretcher.
"Emerald summoned an image of Salem with her semblance." Penny stated in her informative tone. "He started to seize. I think the illusion triggered him somehow. Cinder used the cover it provided to make her escape."
"Without Mercury," Yang tapped the body of the warrior with her foot.
"Cloud killed him," Penny murmured. "He drove his blade through his chest. He died almost instantly. You can see the wound."
I could. A great blade had been jabbed under Mercury's ribs and out the other side. Cloud's broadsword was stained with Mercury's blood.
"So what? Cloud can't even look at Salem without having some kind of episode?" Yang asked.
"The image was a bit intense, even to me. Afterwards he started to ramble. I think he was trying to tell me she was in his mind," Penny told us. "He couldn't get the words out, though. I think she was using the opportunity to attack him. To start another of her hacking attempts."
"I hope he's okay…" Ruby mumbled. "He didn't handle meeting his sisters very well. This probably wasn't good for him."
"I thought he was going to die," Penny informed us, devoid of nearly all emotion.
"It was that bad?" I asked.
"He was really seizing and frothing at the mouth," Penny said. "I must report to Ironwood now. Excuse me."
She stepped away and took off like a jet. She soared overhead and in the direction of the academy.
"It's bad if he can't even look at her without having epilepsy. I don't think he'll be able to fight her. At least not physically. Not unless he gets much stronger mentally," I said. "When we fight her it'll have to be without Cloud's help."
"When we fight her…" Ruby trailed off. "I don't know how we'll be able to do it without Cloud. But if he really can't look at her then he'll never be able to help us."
"Maybe he'll get stronger," Blake said. She sounded like she didn't believe it, though.
"His meds aren't working," Ruby murmured. "They're supposed to prevent this but it doesn't seem like they did anything. Maybe we should let him go back to self medicating. He was doing relatively okay before he got on these meds. At least according to him."
"I don't know… all the doctors think that's a bad idea," I returned uneasily. "But maybe some of those meds he's on are just making things worse."
"At least he got Mercury. That's another bad guy down and in Cloud's pocket," Yang said. "He's not useless."
"He would be in a fight against Salem," Blake muttered. She was right. "He can't fight in his condition."
"He might know more. We should ask him when he wakes up," Ruby murmured.
I couldn't even be mad about him getting in this fight. He had support. He let us know what was happening. It even seemed like he had grounds to say that he'd been winning based on Mercury's corpse. It just still wasn't enough. Salem had exploited a tiny advantage over him and it sounded like he'd almost died over it.
It was… unrighteously unfair. He'd done everything right. It just hadn't been enough. Salem was ruthless. Cloud often described her as a goddess. He said he felt like a dog next to her. I wondered how true that was. Salem was old, she had magic, she was on another level, even from the maidens. It sure seemed like she was unbeatable when she toppled Cloud so easily.
It was easy to drown in the hopelessness of it. Cloud was, for all his strength, vulnerable. And he was the only of his siblings on our side and they might all have magic too. It was seven against one in that department and that didn't even count the wicked witch, Salem, herself.
She had power over his mind and probably spades of other powers and she controlled the Grimm which at all times outnumbered the Cetra. It was bleak when you looked at things like that. From that perspective I could understand why Cloud felt so helpless. He was just one man and he couldn't even do enough magic to turn a needle into a feather and he was supposed to fight a goddess; one that needed little more than to be looked upon by him and he'd start to crumble.
Ruby's dreams of an extra large family seemed so distant and even more impossible. She wanted so much and Cloud would die in this fight against Salem in all likelihood. That was if he didn't turn on us again, this time for keeps like his sisters and side with his mother against the world.
He was shattered despite all his power. It seemed like he hadn't even begun to heal with Ruby's and my help. I wasn't sure we were doing anything for him. I wasn't sure he was doing more than delaying the inevitable. I wanted to be doing more. I wanted to be helping him for real. But what did that even mean and how could I accomplish that?
I could only love him as best as I was able even if it wasn't very much.
"Ruby…" I trailed. "Things don't look good for Cloud."
"I know, Weiss."
"I don't know how to get you what you want. I don't know how to save him from this."
Ruby let out a long sigh. "I… I know. But I'm not about to give up on him. Even if the odds are stacked against him. I won't give up. Tell me that you're with me."
"I am. I'm just… I'm scared for him. If he can't do this much, what can he do? It wasn't even like she looked at him. He looked at her. That's all it took to unwind him. She's… she's laying traps in his mind."
"She's worming her way into his subconscious. That's what he always says," Ruby muttered. "How do you resist something like that? It's horrible."
"It's psychic warfare. Maybe we need to come at it from a different angle."
"What do you mean?" Ruby wondered.
"I have… maybe an idea." Or the start of one. "We need to help him to not hate himself. We need to build a place in his mind that's secure. Without her influence."
"Can we do that?"
"I don't know. But we have to try, don't we. Otherwise we may as well give him up right now."
pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq
"I had them," Cloud said from the hospital bed when he woke up. Ruby and I were beside him. I took his hand in both of mine. Rough calluses against my soft skin. I could feel his aura. Golden and tinged with blue. It was furious. "Penny and I, that is. We fucking had then and they slipped away. It was all my fault. I let her in. I gave her an opening into my thoughts."
"Is that how she got you?" Ruby asked.
"I… I was reminded of her. It made me think of her and she sort of… she penned me in. She corralled me. Once I started I couldn't stop. Once I thought of her it opened up the connection between us even wider. Like a damn bursting. I couldn't shut that faucet off. She just crawled right into me."
"Cloud, we want to help you. Weiss says she has an idea. One that could help you resist Salem."
Cloud looked up at me. Doubt and curiosity, both were well earned from his perspective.
"We want to build a place in your mind free of her influence. A sort of sanctum. A place where you can always retreat to if you need to and know that she isn't there," I told him. "Everyday we will spend time with you and we'll work on it together. It won't be time wasted even if we do fail."
"I...I could see how that could help. I just don't know where to start."
"Start with us and the time we've spent together," I said. "Start with Beacon and your time spent with Pyrrha. Just lay back and remember. Salem wasn't there then. She doesn't own that. You do."
"Pyrrha…" Cloud whispered. He shuddered a little. He got goosebumps down his arm where I held him.
"Breathe and relax," Ruby whispered. She stroked his head and lifted it up and set it in her lap. "Breathe and relax, Cloud. Salem isn't here right now. You're safe."
"Am I?" He didn't ask rhetorically. He seemed genuinely curious about whether he was free of her.
"Reach out to where she attacked you and see if you can feel her," I walked him through it like a meditation.
His breath hissed out. His blue eyes were a touch wild. "She's there. I can feel her. Mother…"
"Now come back to us. Is there a difference? Can you feel a difference?" I asked.
"I…" he breathed. He strained to relax, his eyes shut in focus. "I can feel a difference. There's a place where she is and there's a place where I am. But we're connected."
"Come back and be with us. You're safe here. We won't let you hurt anyone. You can relax," I whispered.
His eyelids fluttered at the sound of my voice.
"Can you stop me?" He wondered, purely wondering.
"Of course we can. And besides," Ruby said. "I don't believe that you would hurt us. I believe in you."
"We'll spend time with you every day and work on this. On where you can and can't feel her. We'll be with you every step of the way," I informed him patiently. My voice was as soft and melodic as I could make it without actually singing, though it came close at times. I wanted him relaxed and I patiently walked him through the exercise like I honestly knew what I was doing rather than just guessing. But it was the best I could do. It was all I could do.
I may not know what I was doing in full but he didn't really need to know that. I needed him to have this. Even if it didn't work for what we wanted it wasn't time spent in vain.
It was time spent trying to help him. That could mean everything to me and Ruby.
"I can feel her in the corner of my mind. Her tentacles are pulling at me. They want me to go to her," he whispered. "They call to me. They beckon at me."
"Now come back to us. Listen to the sound of my voice. You're safe here. We will guard you," I murmured. "We won't let you go. Not to her or to anyone. There will be no reunion."
"No reunion...What if I do something awful again?" He breathed. His eyes still slammed shut. "What if I hurt you?"
"You could never hurt us, Cloud, we know you could never do it," Ruby whispered. "Just like you could never hurt Ren and Nora." The breath whistled out of him. "That was all Salem. It was all her. Not you. Never you. It is not your fault. It's your mother messing with your head that's to blame."
Cloud's eyes flickered underneath closed lids. It looked like he might fall asleep. I took that as a good sign. I wanted him to be that relaxed. It was when he was tensed and panicked that Salem would have the most power over him, I believed.
"Surround her," I encouraged. "Be the one to box her in rather than the other way around. This is your mind. No one owns it or knows it more thoroughly than you do. This is where you reside."
He breathed in through his nose and out through his mouth. He did it again. Then a third time.
"She calls out to me… I can feel not just her, but my sisters as well. They're there. I feel them. I was always able to," he sounded a little relaxed. His voice was deep and smouldering.
"They aren't important. Build your walls. Breath deep. We have you here." I squeezed his hand tightly. I pulled his hand to my chest and hugged it like I was hugging him.
"We'll do this every day. You can talk to us about the things that you feel when we do it," Ruby stroked her hands through his hair. One over the other in a continuous wave. Down and back. Down and back. All over his scalp. "Or if you don't feel like talking we can do that too."
"I… maybe I could get used to this." He muttered. His eyes still closed. He seemed on the edge of sleep. Maybe he'd get some actual rest for once with our help.
I could only do what I could for him.
Ruby bent down and kissed his forehead.

It was after one of our sessions with him that he transfigured the needle.
His head had been in my lap while Ruby sat straddling his wide body. He lay his head back and relaxed while we murmured our way through the exercise. Feeling out where Salem was and where he was in relation to that. His eyes moved like he was in REM sleep while I whispered in his ears.
Time spent with him was not time wasted. That was one of the perks of doing this. The three of us were just spending our time together. Even if for the most part it was time spent in relaxed silence.
He'd gotten up and shifted his attention to the needle. Shifting on his arms until he rose from the bunk. His eyes blurred and half awake and his hair in messy spikes. It gave him a handsome bedraggled look as he plopped down to focus on his next project. At first he didn't seem focused enough but his eyes fluttered closed and he began a wordless chant. His lips moved but he said nothing.
I was sure the needle was another experiment in helping Cloud with his focus in his battle against Salem. The way he said he was supposed to extend his will must also be a lesson in the sort of control we wanted him to master during our sessions with him.
He was sitting at his desk with his hand outstretched towards the needle. His eyes shut in focus as he worked. His lips moving soundlessly as he attempted the transformation. His aura flickered, relaxed and calm and jumped out over the needle. Then the needle began to wobble.
Ruby and I watched, enraptured, as the needle twisted and turned in place. Then it started to shift. It grew longer and more slender.  It started to curve like a bow and though the hole in top never vanished, spikes grew from its side in a metallic curtain.
The prunes of the feather grew into place but the material never changed. It remained metallic with the spindles of hair like structures growing down from it.
When that was done Cloud slumped back in the chair and opened his eyes.
He reached out one hand and picked up the iron feather. The head of the needle had grown long and bent. The hole was still present but the shape of it as a whole had changed. He tossed it once into the air. "Well what do you know," he whispered. His will and mind had been enough to cause the needle to transform. His focus was sharp enough to transmute the shape if not the material.
"Cloud…" Ruby whispered. "You did it…"
He dropped the metallic feather and it clunked against the desk duly. Metallic cillia shone in the soft light that trickled in through the window.
"It's clunky. But it's mine," he whistled.
"You have magic," I breathed.
"What does it feel like?" Ruby asked.
"It's… it's not so different from aura. Not really. I think. Maybe that's still holding me back but it feels about the same. Not real easy to distinguish the two." He sighed.
I picked the feather up and ran my thumb along the edge of the hairs. It was sharp enough to cut oneself on. It was, well, as sharp as a needle point.
"Can the maidens do this type of thing? Or is it all fire and lightning? Like dust." I asked.
"I'm not sure. Magic is confusing," Cloud said. "But whatever it is I have it. I guess I had better let Ozpin know."
"Aren't you proud?" Ruby asked. Cloud mostly sounded bored and tired. Like the feat had exhausted him. "You did it. You changed it."
"I feel like it's less important than any other progress I might have made. But maybe a little." His voice was low and had a sexy little rasp to it with the weary tone.
He reached over and ruffled Ruby's hair and she shone up at him. He didn't dare try that kind of display of affection with me. But he did give my cheek a kiss which I deigned to allow.
"I think it's thanks to these sessions. I think that they're going to save me, if anything will," he said.
"Well with praise like that how can we stop now?" I rolled my eyes. "I suppose we'll have to keep going and see what happens."

So about your (very deep) RWBY analysis you said there were a few plausible ships in consequence, could you write on that too? I'm curious to see what those are if we follow that analysis
Sure! Firstly, thanks for reading that lol.
So I’ll just come out and say that I don’t fully trust the writers in this aspect, but the main ships that I see set up for in the alchemical sense are, of course, Yang/Blake and Ren/Nora, but also Ruby/Oscar and potentially Emerald/Mercury and Jaune/Weiss. (I will touch on Pyrrha/Jaune, but I don’t think Pyrrha is going to or should come back so... :( ) This all depends on how they stick to the alchemical structure, but just to reiterate: it’s extremely unlikely an alchemical story with a fairy tale basis is going to end with most characters single. It could and could do it well, but I’m skeptical lol.
Just to add a disclaimer: this is all theory and speculation; I honestly do not care about ships in this series besides Ren and Nora and hence am not emotionally invested. I could be wrong, and I’m fine with it. Please don’t come for me.
Tumblr media
Let’s begin by going over what romance is in alchemy. I talked about this in my previous meta, but the key principles of an alchemical work are the solar king and lunar queen. So who are they? What is their role in alchemy?
Behold, the symbol for the philosopher’s stone:
Tumblr media
Or more clearly:
Tumblr media
The large circle is the macrocosm, or universe as a whole. The triangle is body, mind, and heart (originally it was body, soul, and spirit). The square is the four classical elements (fire, air, earth, water). The smaller circle is the microcosm, wherein the two people inside are the Solar King and Lunar Queen, opposites conjoined in harmony. Together two conjoined opposites (yes it’s related to yin/yang, but eastern alchemy focuses more on the Elixir of Life rather than the actual stone and there are five elements, not four) create the philosopher’s stone.
I talked about this in the past meta, but we know Ruby is a philosophical child because her father’s name literally means sun and her mother’s defining trait thus far is her silver eyes. She’s the stone itself, but also team RWBY is the stone, and other characters are on their own journeys to becoming philosopher’s stone. Things overlap.
I didn’t come up with those designations of silver=moon on my own, though. Generally the two principles that are combined in a philosopher’s stone are marked by one (or more) of the following:
Male: Sun, Sulphur, fire and air, hot and dry, Red, gold, heart.
Female: Moon, Mercury (or quicksilver), earth and water, cool and moist, White, silver, mind.
Don’t read too much into the genders, because that tends to matter the least and plays into antiquated views. Obviously. Characters rarely meet all the marks as well, but if marked with one should be paired with someone from the opposite marking.
Let’s talk the obvious ones first: Ren and Nora, Blake and Yang, and Jaune and Pyrrha.
Ren and Nora are pretty perfectly matched. Ren is mind, earth (“Lie” means “plum tree”) and water (“Ren” means “lotus,” a water-based flower). Nora is heart (her shirt, plus her brave qualities), fire (Thor and the association with electricity, plus “Nora” means “light”), and air (she flies, and a Valkyrie is a mythical flying creature in Norse mythology).
Yang and Blake are also a good match. Yang is sun, gold (her name), fire and air (”Xiao long” means dragon), and heart. Blake is moon (Belladonna is a nightshade), earth and water (think of where her home village is), and mind. Blake was also a match for Sun Wukong, however, and this is why I’m skeptical about the writing of ships in this series--because they teased Sun/Blake for little reason (and I remember being confused). However, they did know that Blake’s partner needed to be her opposite, so Yang or Sun could work, and I think it’s clear that Blake/Yang is endgame and I like it.
Pyrrha is red (her name), gold (her outfit), heart and mind, and her shield had a sun on it.
Tumblr media
Jaune was white (the dress he wore to the dance), body (differing from the norm, but fit because Pyrrha was both heart and mind; a body character tends to be either lusty or cowardly, the latter of which was Jaune in the first season), and moon. Look at Jaune’s shield, which so happens to match the silver/moon symbol in alchemy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, Pyrrha has now died, and I’m still sad about it. However, also of note: fitting with the characters they are based off of, Team JNPR are have reversed gender dynamics from the alchemical norms. Again, I would bet that was done on purpose.
Onto my speculations:
For Ruby... well, I said she was the philosopher’s stone.
In some ways, Ruby and Weiss are the philosopher’s stone together, but I think this is more platonic than romantic (it’s a lovely ship though and I see why people ship it). The reason for this is because while Ruby is Red, air, and Heart, and Weiss is White, water, and mind, Ruby and Weiss are both silver. They don’t compliment each other in this, which is why I don’t see it as a likely endgame romantic ship (but, like Frodo and Samwise Gamgee, I do see them as alchemical partners who help stop Salem together).
But her romantic partner should be someone who is also both sun and moon, who is white where she is red, gold where she is silver, earth where she is air (she flies), mind where she is heart. Ideally they would also be a philosophical child. There’s one character I can think of who is marked as sun and moon, white, mind, and earth, and that’s Oscar Pine. See: Ozpin’s cane, which Oscar uses on his own quite a bit (that’s a sun and moon motif):
Tumblr media
Additionally, in the scene where Ruby and Oscar meet for the first time, the paintings on the wall are a sun (fire) with distinctive air around it and a crescent moon over earth and water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If Weiss ends up in any ship, it will be with a person marked as heart, red, fire, and gold to her mind, white, water (ice), and silver. Neptune is water too, so this one is unlikely. Sun seems like a possibility on paper, but they haven’t interacted significantly at all (maybe they will in Vacuo?) But the most likely option to me is actually Jaune Arc--but a lot depends on the coming arcs (heh).
Wait, you said he was white! Key word: was. Jaune was never mind and will never be mind, but he has become brave as opposed to his initial fear, and I’d go so far as to say he’s heart now thanks to Pyrrha’s influence. Since Pyrrha’s death as well, he’s started incorporating gold and red into his outfit in a likely homage to Pyrrha. (It is actually possible for someone to shift markings; Daenerys in A Game of Thrones is white and moon, but becomes red and fire and all that by the end of the novel).
Jaune’s arc of grief over Pyrrha is unlikely to end with him being forever alone, and while there are plenty of ways to show this that don’t involve him in a relationship with someone else, it’s the most obvious way to show this. It also fits from a narrative perspective that the only way Jaune could ever be with Weiss is through integrating with Pyrrha’s traits and qualities. We’ll see, though, because as of now he’s still marked as moon, and he’d need to become sun or fire. Cinder also directly compared Pyrrha and Weiss, and immediately after this Jaune unlocked part of his soul to heal Weiss, playing the role of the prince in Weiss’s fairy tale (Snow White). However, as Cinder’s own story shows us, not all princes in their retellings of these fairy tales are romantic. So this might not play out, but it has the set-up to do so.
Lastly, Emerald and Mercury I think are alchemical partners regardless of whether or not they end up together romantically. Mercury’s name says it all, and Emerald’s eyes mark her as red. He’s mind, she’s heart. I’m adding this to the questionably romantic ones because I’m curious about the fact that Emerald and Mercury are now separated in the current season, just like all four of the above ships I mentioned.
Also to keep in mind: sometimes writers say eff the tropes. See: Harry and Ginny, who are both red and air (but Ginny’s name also marks her as white, so).

Note
Ren for the character ask please 🙏
meme, accepting.
my top three ships for the character.
greek lotus ( ren / pyrrha ) sunflowyr ( ren / yang ) ninjas of love ( ren / blake. )
my three least favourite ships for the character.
renora ( ren / nora ) jnpr berries ( poly team jnpr ) nora’s boys ( ren / nora / jaune. )
my biggest criticism for the character.
just how poorly he is used in the story, though this really isn’t a criticism of ren’s character because for the longest time ... he didn’t have one lmao. he was flat & just someone to fill the roster of jnpr, with he & nora having to share a character & obviously her stronger personality would dominate their screen time. every opportunity for his character development has come at the caveat that nora has to be a part of it & at this point, i’m soured to mkek whining that he has no character when it’s their fault.
my favourite thing about the character.
his little passive aggressive snark, it’s not as forefront as some of the other’s defining traits but it does make ren feel more human & less like an asian character stereotype. he doesn’t just follow what his team says, he’s gonna’ make a snarky comment about it first & good for him. it does also show that ren isn’t afraid to have his own ideals, like what they were beginning to try & do in v8.
a headcanon i have about them.
in beacon he had his own little window sill rock garden, remembering how he & his dad used to spend the days li was home tending to the gardens, learning how to be artful & passionate & create.
what i would change about them if i was making a re-write.
this ties to renora as a pairing too but for the love of god, nail them down as individual characters first before any of this relationship nonsense because like i said in another ask, we’ve done the whole development to relationship thing backwards. also, we all know ren is a competent fighter if he & nora were able to survive a decade on their own before beacon so actually fucking let him be a good fighter. either make stormflower useful or get rid of it & give him a sword.
what i think of their character allusion and what (if anything) i would change about it.
i saw someone else point out that ren doesn’t really fit mulan as an allusion beyond ... being chinese? is that all we need now? & a vague flower motif tying into the poem  /  folklore of mulan  ( though it’s the wrong flower. )  all the other defining characteristics of her as an iconic figure  —  going to war to protect her father from being conscripted instead & surely dying, having to choose between personal want & duty, rejection of status because that wasn’t what she wanted, having to hide who she was for over a decade  —  none of this plays into ren’s character. we only know ren is mulan because mk told us he was mulan & mulan is a major chinese folklore figure & the one most western audiences will know because of the 1998 disney adaptation.
i would either change some things about his character & the journey they wanted for ren  —  because it was edging towards it with the introduction of his parents & his own motivations in v8, before they had him bow to rwby’s way anyways  —  or just find another allusion. especially when there is a very japanese influence over ren as well, probably because of mk’s orientalism & insistence of using terms like ninja & such to define him. he could be both japanese & chinese but it reads less like a conscious decision to do so & more so mk just conflating the two cultures together.
but also on the aspect of having to hide who he was in relation to mulan hiding who she was during the war; this is where i would’ve addressed the issue of only having one faunus in the main 8 kids by having ren be one too. it would allow us to see an inside perspective on the racism in mistral early on as well as combat the issue of blake being the only voice on faunus issues we get to hear for a good couple of years. having them come into conflict with their own ideals on faunus + faunus issues, as well as addressing their difference in background, would’ve been far more interesting & realistic.

Our Home Away From Home, Away From Home
[1] [2] [x] [4-5] [6] [7] [8-9] [10]
PART 3 – Inhibitions
The Kirin Festival is older than Vale itself. No one knows why they wear fish-scale costumes or set fire to carefully carved wooden statues as they drift into the sea. Why they sing songs of a dead tongue, or why they make the drunk climb a soaked pyramid for honor and – with a touch of modernity – some prizes.
Its mysterious allure is what draws most people. It's the reason why Jaune decides to climb the pyramid himself. He fails miserably. Yang has to carry him off.
Jaune didn't get the memo that participants have to have spare clothes because of course they do, so he's sat drenched in the changing room by the beach, Yang outside with his drying clothes by a heater lamp set up for just this kind of occasion.
They're alone again and it's quiet outside of the distant hum of the festival.
"I called Dad this morning," she says suddenly, leaned beside the tent. "I could hear her in the background." And she goes on, laying out her fears, but during a long pause to process her thoughts a little more, she briefly worries if he's listening.
"Yang. I'm here. I'm listening," he says, clear in that way like a droplet in a cave. Echoing in her mind. Present in all the ways that do not judge.
Then she talks. Talks about her mother coming home. Dancing around her while she reconnects with her dad. Or maybe she's just sleeping with him, and her family isn't going to be whole again. At least, these are her more negative thoughts. She's only willing to forgive her mother from running away if her dad gives her a chance.
She might have earned it then. Might, she emphasizes for Jaune. Raven might well and truly never fit back into her life. Summer – bless her soul – reshaped the gap she left behind. So Yang doesn't know if Tai forgiving Raven might even be enough, but she's willing to hope.
-0-
Everyone gets into a few rides and eats their weight in sugar until they all end up at Junior's club again. Most of them are dancing, except for Ruby and Ren.
When Jaune and Yang dance a little too close to each other, they take a step away. When Sun and Pyrrha dance a little too close beside them, Yang decides to save them both the embarrassment by taking a break.
She doesn't see Jaune taking a swig of his flask. And he doesn't notice that the blush of his cheeks wasn't from the alcohol.
Yang comes back to the table just as Ren – under the influence of alcohol – confesses that Joan has been trying to court him.
Ren and Nora's relationship isn't official. It's tumultuous since she came back to Kuroyuri alone over the Summer to mourn her long lost brother. Ren couldn't bear to go with her. When she came back, they've been… uncertain. Awkward, even.
Joan adds to his confusion because she doesn't criticize his choices or cowardice, she just listens. (It's so eerily familiar that Yang shuts her eyes tight just to give herself time to swallow it). So Joan, in a stroke of luck, is there for him precisely when he needs someone who isn't Nora.
Yang doesn't believe he'll choose her over Nora. It's just a rough patch. As long as neither of them do anything stupid in the meantime, she tells them, then it'll turn up alright once they get their rhythm again.
Ren says nothing.
Ruby's concern in that lack of confidence is burning.
Ren, placating her, says that he's certain things will work out between them again but knows he can't trust his own emotions just yet. Nora mentioned the nuckleavee limping around in the woods (JNPR went there towards the end of freshmen year to kill it but only managed to cripple it as it retreated). He was so blindingly furious at the idea that the beast was still alive that his nails started crackling against his aura.
Calm as he was, Ren wasn't completely put together just yet. "Maybe we're too young to be in love anyway," he says.
"I don't think it's love's fault that it happens too early or too late," Yang says, eyes away. "I think it's our fault for acting when we shouldn't or not acting at all. Or Going too far or…" – she glances at the dance floor – "…not far enough."
Ren is smug when she looks back at them. Nothing is left of Ruby but a cascade of rose petals. Then she zips back to her with the same smug look and a neck of her strawberry sunshine. Little umbrella and all.
Yang admits that she was looking at Jaune, but not for the reasons they think.
Jaune wishes he did more with Pyrrha. Even if he's not hurting over it anymore, he's afraid of making any more mistakes like that.
"He was actually," Ren says. He explains that Jaune spent the Summer alone and he spent some time calling him at the bottom of a whiskey bottle. He confessed about his feelings going haywire and how he wishes he could be happy for the new couple but dangerous parts of his mind told him that he shouldn't have been so passive. Strangely, he was being cryptic and even mentioned a marriage, but that he mumbled that last bit and Ren just shrugged it off.
"That wasn't about Pyrrha, though," Yang says.
"…What?"
"Oh. Oh, shit. I shouldn't have said that." Despite hinting at Jaune's big secret, Yang is a little happy that there was something he was only willing to tell her and not anyone else.
Then the rest of them come back to the booth and Yang pulls Jaune aside before Ren and Ruby can say anything.
She asks him about Joan going after Ren.
He tells her that he knows, but that all his efforts to curb her have failed. She's adamant about pursuing him.
Yang decides to try it herself.
-0-
Everyone's on their way back to the festival when Yang realizes that it's going to be too loud to call. She tells them she'll catch up and sits by a bench in the park. The musty smell of the pond battles against the fresh scent of her still lingering strawberry sunrise.
Joan picks up rather quickly, the sound of her team's movie vanishing in the background. She mouths out apologies to them first before she shuts a window behind her (her dorm is on the ground floor and she slips out through the window as frequently as the door) then sound of crickets chirps through the speaker.
Yang cuts to the chase and mentions Ren.
Joan asks her if she was talking to Jaune. Joan sighs, but she's not dejected, just… amused.
"Jaune likes to forget that we're the same age. That I had a boyfriend before, too. He likes to protect me cause I'm his sister. But I'm as wise as he is… and just as naïve."
Joan lists off Jaune's advice to her.
It's just a phase.
It wouldn't work out.
You're aren't thinking this through.
He's already practically married.
Joan rejects them all.
"I can't help what I feel. I can't dance around love like I'm waiting for an opportunity to strike. We aren't struck by falling stars when the perfect partner comes along. We just find the best we can and make it work out. Maybe Ren isn't for me. Maybe what I have is fleeting and foolish and naïve and stupid. I don't care. I am done waiting for the world to give me the good news. This time around, I'm taking initiative."
They end the call soon after. Yang can't argue with her earnest pursuit if she isn't muscling into it and pushing Nora out of the picture. There was also that chip in her tone that sounded like she knew she was fighting a losing battle.
When Yang exits the park, she finds Jaune waiting by the gate. He stayed back for her.
Fireworks flash over the sky, color splashing over a dark canvas.
Yang only looks at Jaune. Maybe it's Joan being proactive that might have pushed her to stand a little closer. Her fingers twitch. She doesn't know what she wants, but thinks that maybe a little indulgence isn't so bad.
Then he looks at her. But not at her eyes. They're locked at her lips. Without thinking, he pulls out his flask. He takes a swig and tries to go ahead but she grabs him by the wrist.
Perhaps remembering what she did last time she grabbed his arm as he walked away, he covers his mouth with his arm.
She laughs at him. "I'm tired. The party's over. Let's just drop them a line and go home."
"Home…" he whispers before nodding.
-0-
They're sat at the couch because they're waiting on their scrolls. Ruby went missing but they were tasked with staying behind just in case Ruby stumbles into their apartment. Yang isn't too worried. Ruby probably saw Penny and was dragged off during the fireworks.
In the silence, Yang tells Jaune that they spent a lot of time today listening to her problems. Maybe they should talk about his again.
The offer is tempting but he isn't quite ready. He wants to take his mind off it but lately his usual substitutes have been less effective. (Spending time with Yang has been dangerously enticing, and he's starting to wonder if he watered down his whiskey a little too much tonight).
"How about a different substitute?"
She pushes off the couch and tells him to wait right there. He does get up to change his shirt but it's taking so long for Yang to come out that he's starting to worry.
He approaches her door.
She bursts out of it. "Sorry," she says. "It's the only white dress I have." She's wearing the same dress she had at the dance. "It's no wedding gown, but with this on, maybe you'll stop thinking about her."
The idea that he'll think about her instead eludes her for a second before they're both thinking about it and her smiles gets awkward. Worse when he won't say a thing and his eyes have been wide this entire time.
She powers through and plays a song on her scroll. "You said they played something by Ivy Garden at the reception. I'm guessing this is it?"
He nods along as guitar strings rattle off into the room, filling the gaps till the wallpaper turns marble, a band plays on the stage, lavender drapes fall over the frosted glass where moonlight shimmers faintly in the gaps. And she is there, skin a rich chocolate brown, eyes like polished hickory.
Then she takes a step in his direction and her hair is a rich blonde, and her skin is pale and… "Yang? You… You don't have to do this…"
"Hush. You won't talk, so let's not talk. Let's try something else here and see if this works for you."
It works. It works too well.
So they join hands and dance. It's slow and circular, around the center of the living room. She can't bring herself to look him in the eyes. Her head rests against his chest and that somehow makes it worse for him. Especially when she loops her hands around his neck.
He wants so much to ask for more, but can't. His hands are shaking when they're squeezing her hips gently. She notices and pulls her head against his Adam's apple. Her warmth pools over him like a scarf, curling him inwards till his eyes go hazy and his lips hover dangerously over her scalp.
The music stops. The world comes back together, to the present, to their apartment.
Yang hesitates to ask if it worked. When she pulls her head out of his chest, she's surprised to find him breathless. He slowly comes back to his senses.
He takes a step back and immediately reaches for his flask. He downs it but the buzz is missing still, even when he empties it down his throat.
His cheeks don't flare. His thoughts don't cloud. All he has is clarity and it gnaws at the desires within reach. At her.
He almost kisses her, lips quivering, fists balled as his flask clatters to the floor. He clearly isn't sure where to put himself, even if a deep part of him already knows.
Yang decides that she isn't the kind of girl that lets something like this slip by.
She is so warm that her lips feel like she's branding him when they kiss; clamping on the delicate flesh of his lower lip with a desperation he should have seen coming. She'd been holding back, and when he bit back, he knew he was too.
White noise filtered into her ears as she became painfully aware of her own heartbeat. It was erratic, beating off-rhythm and she knows she's afraid. He said he was against this before, and the fear that she might be making a mistake again makes her shudder.
But then she moans when he pulls her in and dips a few degrees till she's curling against him. And she realizes that he isn't pulling away. It beckons him like a siren song, plunging him through the haze of his mind – not knowing that he's already found her – to be captivated, taken completely as if drowning in her.
When he leaves her lips, he presses his forehead to hers. His breath tickles her nose. She edges into him again.
Her kiss, then, is featherlight. Brief and affectionate. She wills herself to pull away; lets him breathe and take it in.
"I don't think this is love," he says.
"I don't think either of us are wise enough to tell the difference," she replies.
The idea that she might be right, that maybe this is okay, snaps something inside of him. She's willing to let him indulge just as long she's doing the same. Maybe he won't hurt her by not falling in love. Maybe this is okay. Maybe… Maybe…
He lets go, leaning back against the couch. He's thinking to himself. Wrestling with rationale.
She wants to comfort him, to tell him it's alright. That won't have to change if they don't need to. So she places a hand on his chest to get his attention, but he's so shocked by the sudden contact that he falls back and grabs onto her dress strap as they collapse onto the couch.
He's lying on the couch now with her bodily over his stomach.
She laughs and so does he, both falling away again into natural diffusion.
He thinks himself safe. The burning tension has withered, but just like before, Yang is unwilling to let things end so anticlimactically.
She gets up and sits on his waist. For a moment he's confused until she falls on him like timberwood. His body – the massive traitor that it is – welcomes her embrace with familiarity.
She laughs between breaths.
There's less heat and more comfort. Less passion and more affection. Indulgence in a way that is almost innocent. For a moment he needs to breathe but she clamps over his mouth. His annoyance spurs her on like it's a game. She's still laughing.
Then he opens his mouth. She slips in a tongue by accident.
They shudder.
They're boiling again, eyes shut to whatever is rumbling between them. His hands travel up her legs. A heat crawls over her skin. Then his fingers tease at the edge of her skirt.
She yelps, pulling away.
Yang realizes, rather succinctly, that she wasn't completely ready.
"Yang?"
"I… Okay, I'm not… I don't know about that yet."
His fingers are still on her legs. They're not even very far up but the places he touches tickle in a way that is electrifying.
He slips out from under her as she sits back against the arm rest of the couch. Her body curled up. Guarded.
An ache settles in his chest. "Yang, I'm so – "
She unfurls. "Don't!" She reaches over and grabs his hands. "Don't… Don't apologize. We wanted this, didn't we? I'm just not mentally prepared to do anything but make out right now."
"You make it sound like there's going to be a second time."
"You forget," she says with a grin, "this is the second time."
"Oh."
"Look, Jaune. I think we've got a good thing going on right now. We're not taking anything from each other, we have fun, and we both know that we needed this."
"You're a little more optimistic about this than I am."
"Is that a bad thing?"
"I just hope it means things won't end poorly."
She squeezes his hand. "I don't know what it is that we've got going on right now, so I can't tell you that things won't end well or… not." She scooches closer. "But I'll try my best. Trust me?"
She's so earnest that he banishes doubts long enough to answer. He kisses her instead with the same featherlight comfort she'd given him earlier.
She hums appreciatively. "I think I like it when you say 'yes' this way."
"That a rule now?"
"Maybe. Prepare lip balm. You'll have room now that you won't need that flask anymore."
"I'm not attaching myself to you 24/7. I'm keeping the whiskey."
"I mean, you could attach yourself to me 24/7."
"You can't be serious…"
She slaps his arm, laughing. "I'm not! I'm joking! Lighten up a little."
"Sorry. This is… new to me. It feels like I've skipped a few steps and broken a ton of rules somehow."
"No, I get you, but try not to dissolve into a wet blanket." He pouts. She beams and powers on. "We're two consenting almost-adults here. There's nothing wrong with what we're doing."
"Some people would disagree."
"And some people are wrong and can stuff it." Now that she's calm, she finds that she can still smell the saltwater in his socks. He's probably uncomfortable right now. She stands up. "Now we should both take a bath. This makeup is starting to feel like I'm wearing a mask pressed around my eyes."
"Shouldn't we talk this out a bit more? Lay down some ground rules?"
"In the morning. I'd like to enjoy the prospect of what I can do without having to think about what I can't."
He sighs but warmth bubbles into his chest. "Fine. In the morning."
"Good." She walks up to her door. She stops before she opens it. "Oh, and… don't lock your door."
-0-
It's past midnight when Jaune hears his door open. He tries to squeeze his eyes shut to try to ignore what's coming, but once Yang slips into his sheets and hums happily against his chest, he finds himself painfully aware of the body pressed to his.
"What are you doing?" he asks.
"Being too close but not close enough."
He chooses not to question it.
She slips up further, breath on his neck. She bites. His aura flares up on instinct and she barely gets to his skin, tasting air instead.
"Uh…" he drones awkwardly.
She buries her face into his chest. "Shut up. I was trying to be hot."
"I think we've had enough excitement for one night."
"Lower your aura."
"Yang, c'mon…"
"Jaune…"
He sighs. "Fine…"
-0-
"So this morning, she sneaks up to me while I'm coming into the hallway and she bites me," Jaune says, pointing at his neck. "Then she hands me this bandage before she runs off."
"That sounds dangerously risqué," Joan comments.
Ruby is burying herself in her hood meanwhile, trying to contain her embarrassment.
"That's cause I bit her lip last night for revenge from last time."
Ruby crawls out of her hood and slaps her cheeks. They're still red but she doesn't care at this point. "Okay, so you aren't together?"
"Nora described it as together but not together-together."
"You and I both know that makes zero sense."
"Exactly. That's what makes it perfect. It makes about as much sense as our relationship."
Joan groans. "I can tell Yang came up with that one. It's one of those rules you two talked about, isn't it?"
He nods. "Hundred-percent."
Yang enters the cafeteria and spots them immediately. "Hey, you," she says with a purr. When she sits down, he kisses her cheek.
Ruby retreats back into her hood, gets up, and walks away. Joan rolls her eyes and follows after her.
"You were right," Jaune says, "this is fun."
"Glad you think so. Cause I'm about to sprinkle a bit of madness your way."
Dread hitches itself like prickled grass on his skin. "Okay… Hit me."
"My uncle's coming to Beacon."
"Uh… That's not so bad. Qrow and I are friends."
"No, you don't understand. He saw us at the park and followed us to the apartment to make sure we got home safe."
"Oh… oh, fuck. How much… how much did he hear?"
"Enough to want to meet with your privately. He told me not to tell you. He'll message you later tonight."
"He's going to kill me, isn't he?"
She winces. "Worse."
"What?"
"Qrow wasn't mad on the phone. He was… embarrassed."
Simultaneously he felt relief and yet more dread. "Oh… oh no…"

How I would do RWBY pt.9
Season nine
RWBY and JN(P)R and the jobbers are all prepping to take the fight to Salem.
Big military invasion is planned targeting the Grimmlands.
Atlas is used as staging ground.
Atlas military, Ilia’s White Fang, SDC militia, Raven’s bandits, Mistral defense force, Menagerie commandos, and more are there to help.
Everyone even vaguely connected to Ozpin’s Council sends aid.
Vacuo’s defenders will lightly pepper the southern coast to make it seem like they’re still planning on attacking from Vacuo.
Everyone has scenes together about emotions and fears and whatever.
Invasion begins.
Goes well. A beachhead is established, casualties are minimal, and grimm are curtailed rather easily.
Normandy was a success.
They have to do what they came to do as fast as possible before Salem’s grimm from the south cross the continent.
The distraction did its job, but now they’re on their way.
That’s when the offensive grinds to a halt because nothing is ever that fucking easy.
Skirmishes become common, but no greater progress is made.
Then the casualty reports keep coming in.
Everyone except Ozpin reads them.
Morale is lowering, which in turn makes the grimm stronger, which lowers morale further and so forth.
Ironwood says that they need a big symbolic victory to restore morale and get things back on track.
Idea is a blitz, push as hard and fast into the Grimmlands as possible, consolidating as much territory as possible along the way.
Myrmidon is the only real strategic obstacle in the way.
Time is of the essence so plan is a go.
Night before the blitz.
Ruby gives a speech to WBY and JN(P)R.
Says that they’re all the best friends she’s ever had and that, even with all the problems going on, the time they’ve spent together has been the best time of her life.
Everyone has a few more scenes together.
Tai has a moment with his girls.
Raven tries to further apologize to Yang in her own way.
Weiss and Winter have video call with Willow and jailtime Jacques.
Blake has a moment with her parents who came with the Menagerie Commandos.
JN(P)R vow to each other that they’re going to either get Pyrrha back or put her to permanent rest.
Qrow and Ruby have moment together.
Ruby says she’s both out of her mind terrified and incredibly excited to kick ass at the same time.
Qrow says that that’s about right for Summer’s daughter.
Day of the blitz.
Coalition forces charge forth with the fury of…an uninterrupted carpool. What the hell?
There’s no fucking grimm.
The entire army is advancing into hostile territory completely unopposed.
Jaune and Ironwood realize what’s happening at the same time.
Sometimes the best defense is an overwhelming fuck you of an offense.
Pyrrha had withdrawn as many grimm as she possibly could in the timeframe and condensed them into two massive combined hordes.
And she’s sending those two hordes, in a pincer maneuver, directly against the sides of the coalition blitz’ spearhead.
Swarms of grimm hit them like a tidal wave.
The offence halts right then and there.
Fighting is brutal and ground is taken and lost at an alarming rate.
RWBY is shining beacon of hope against the darkness.
Killing droves of grimm as fast as the laws of physics allow.
Pyrrha gets involved.
JN(P)R intercept her.
Fight goes similarly to the last two but with one major difference.
Jaune, in his desperation, takes a blade to the leg and wraps Pyrrha in a bear hug, flooding her with his healing aura just to see what happens.
He doesn’t know what the hell it’s going to do, if anything, but it’s all he has at this point.
Pyrrha tosses him off but is visibly stunned and starts convulsing.
Her human parts are being affected by Jaune’s healing.
This gives them enough time for Ruby to blast her with white fire.
Pyrrha gives Jaune a sad look of longing before she collapses into his arms, once again dead and fading away into the wind.
JNR is sad at seeing their friend die… again.
The grimm lose all cohesion and even begin infighting a little at the complete removal of coordination.
The blitz continues all the way to Salem’s Sanctum.
They encircle and lay siege.
Salem and Ozpin communicate.
It’s finally here, isn’t it? The moment they both’ve dreamed about.
Chaos or order. Which will win in the end?
The day of fate has fin’ly come.
The siege is going rather poorly after about a week or so.
No headway is being made on being able to directly assault the Sanctum.
Artillery has little to no effect due to a magic bubble shield.
Swarm of incredibly powerful grimm operate as a sort of moat preventing infantry incursions.
Flying grimm lead to similar results on aerial attacks.
RWBY and JN(P)R are involved in latest offensive.
It fails. Pretty hard too.
Every day that goes on the more people get killed by the grimm.
This lowers morale.
This causes more, stronger, grimm to show up.
Same problem as before the blitz but with even more stressed logistics.
Scouts report that the grimm horde from the south is going to show up in under a week.
The worst part is that it would take just over a week for coalition forces to pack up and retreat.
Goodie.
Cinder has a moment of actually having a conscious and says she has a solution.
She knows of a way past Salem’s defenses and directly into the Sanctum.
The Cavern of Remembrance. (Yes, I’m nabbing the name from KH2FM, roll with it)
Rumor has it is that it’s a tunnel full of vengeful spirits of the departed.
Many have gone mad attempting to go through it.
Tyrian was the last to make it through, probably because he was pretty crazy to begin with.
Salem does nothing with it because the vast majority of people that go through there don’t make it out and those that do are either easy enough to kill on the other side or are susceptible to recruitment.
Ozpin makes the plan to send a strike team through it.
Should they survive, Ozpin will have Raven open a portal to give them a clean shot at killing Salem.
Nobody really likes this plan but they have few alternatives.
Decide that RWBY, JN(P)R, and CEMN would be the best options for the strike team.
Most of them (particularly Ruby and Jaune) cringe at the idea of working side by side with Cinder but roll with it because Salem is a much higher priority.
The teams get ready to go off.
Tensions are high.
Cinder leads them to the entrance of the cavern.
Everyone takes a moment to steel themselves and enter.
The great majority of the walk through the cavern is just that, walking.
So far it’s just a fucking cave tunnel.
Ren and Nora disappear.
It’s a straight, almost featureless, tunnel so they have no idea what the hell just happened.
Emerald and Mercury disappear next. Then Weiss, then Jaune, then Blake, then Neo, then Penny.
Ruby, Cinder, and Yang are alone now.
Yang gets a little angry, thinking that Cinder set them up.
The argument stops when they see a completely out of place cottage door ahead of them.
They enter it and are shocked to see Summer Rose, happily sitting with a pot of tea ready to pour.
The cavern is a font of old magic. It allows those who enter it one chance to speak to the departed spirit of someone emotionally close to them. Not necessarily a loved one, but someone important, good or ill.
As it turns out this has the habit of often making people want to ‘reunite’ with their loved ones or get killed by the spirit of the one they hated.
Ren and Nora are talking to their respective parents. They tell them that they’ve made it after all.
Weiss is talking to her grandfather. Calls him an old fart that history will only remember as a huge cunt.
Blake is talking to Adam. Specifically, depressed Adam that has lost the psychopathic streak.
Penny is talking to herself, the version of her that Cinder killed. Very trippy and self-reflective.
Emerald is talking to her mother. The last genuinely good influence she’s ever had before going good.
Mercury is talking to (read: says three words to and then starts fighting) his father.
Neo is…okay not talking, but with Roman. He teases her for going legit.
Jaune is talking to Pyrrha. Big happy lovers’ reunion.
Conversations range from tear soaked reunions to vitriol filled shouting matches to straight up fights.
Important bits, aside from emotional closure are as follows:
Mercury doesn’t get his semblance back from papa but awakens what would have been a second one.
It’s Armstrong/Greed style body hardening.
Jaune and Pyrrha have a moment properly saying that they love each other but are cut off prematurely, showing that Salem has resurrected her again.
Jaune has a new plan.
Everyone either connects again with the deceased and gains new resolve, or get pumped by telling the dearly departed dickhead to fuck themselves.
Ruby and Yang get confused as to why Cinder is there with them.
Cinder mouths off like a rude fuck.
Summer scolds her and calls her ‘Cinder Rose’.
Do the plot-twist dance, c’mon. (This was the thing that the Mad Scientist tried to reveal to Ruby)
As it turns out, Cinder is Ruby’s long lost fraternal twin that was stolen by Salem and raised in a horrible orphanage until Salem could come and ‘save’ her.
It was almost a contest between Ozpin and Salem.
Ozpin’s kid living in a well-structured and sheltered place with Salem’s living in a shitty environment with constant hardship. The one who’s system made the better kid, wins.
C+R+Y mutual BSOD.
After a few good shouts and some crying Summer tells her girls that she’ll always love them and be proud of them.
Summer and the cottage fade away and C+R+Y are really unsure as to what to make of this revelation.
Cinder is in the worse emotional shape she’s been in in the series.
They all agree to keep it quiet and just get on with things.
Repress now, react later.
Eventually everyone gets through their meetings and meet up at the exit of the cavern.
They’re right at the base of the Sanctum with the entrance to it in front of them.
Ruby shares brief secret words with Neo, Blake, and Emerald as everyone else is distracted.
They send a radio signal, Raven opens a portal and she, TQ, Ironwood, Glynda, Winter, and Ozpin come through.
Everyone moves into the Sanctum.
They enter the main foyer and Salem is standing atop the stairs waiting for them all dramatic and shit.
Says thank you to Cinder for giving her the opportunity to kill Ozpin.
Cinder calls her a bitch.
Says that she’s going to kill her for her mother’s sake.
Salem says that that’s easier said than done.
Myrmidon attacks with a shitload of grimm, including very crude resurrections of Tyrian, Roman, Adam, and some other jobbers.
It’s almost insulting how poorly done they are compared to Myrmidon.
Salem put all her time and effort into Myrmidon.
Big battle royale extravaganza.
The various resurrected try and fuck with people psychologically. Roman saying he never loved Neo, Tyrian bragging about killing Summer, and such like that.
This works on no one and the resurrected get decked but at least they tried.
The Council, baring Ozpin, get tied up against grimm.
JN(P)R distract Myrmidon and get her away into a separate room.
RWBY and CEMN get at Salem directly.
Salem boss fight start.
JN(P)R manage to redo the plan to knock off Myrmidon’s helmet.
Myrmidon believes she knows what they’re planning to do.
JN(P)R know she knows this and have planned around that plan she planned against their plan.
It makes sense, shut up.
Jaune kisses her and floods her with as much healing semblance as he can.
She almost dies, y’know, again, but the grimm taint is healed away from both the healing semblance and Jaune’s aura jumpstarting her aura again with the power of love.
N(P)R’s aura’s flood into Pyrrha as well because friendship and jury rigging Penny’s artificial aura system.
Pyrrha is unconscious, scarred, and in very poor shape. But she’s alive again, truly.
Not that they’d try it, but attempting similar plans with the other resurrected would have just destroyed them due to their comparably shabby creation.
JNP(P)R’s story is now wrapped up.
Yay!
RWBY and CEMN vs. Salem is still going on.
Lots of fire of both orange and white.
Fuck it, black fire too from Salem.
Summons and hallucinations.
Rage mode and NANOMACHINES SON.
Clone decoys and illusions.
Salem is enraged that she’s losing, decides fuck it and starts just blowing shit up with magic.
Ozpin comes in with the assist when Salem has taken a few hits.
He wants to kill-steal like a noob.
Ruby smiles as her own plan has come together.
Fight goes on, big spectacle, you know the deal.
Big crazy god powers combating each other.
TL;DR Salem and Ozpin stab each other at the same time.
Ruby had Neo, Blake, and Emerald fuck with both of their perceptions with their semblances to as many degrees as they can, making mutually assured destruction… assured (shut up).
Ruby even brags to both of them about it.
“There is no need for gods that only take,” –Asura (A really angry dude)
Calls both Ozpin and Salem bitches.
Both are enraged but the prophesy is fulfilled. Only one can kill the other so both now die.
So die the two worst mass murderers in the history of the planet.
It’s a BIGASS explosion.
Ruby wakes up at home, hoping to unholy fucking hell that this whole thing was not just one long dream after the Fall of Beacon.
It wasn’t.
Everyone is there to see Ruby and tell her that, yes, Salem and Ozpin are super dead.
Everybody wins.
Everyone else lived (She’s especially happy to see Pyrrha) and even got her flowers.
The one that draws her eye is the one that people say is the newest, a black rose.
It has a note saying ‘Ruins of Beacon. One week. –C’.
One week passes.
Ruby goes to the ruins of Beacon, alone, armed as she usually is.
Cinder is waiting for her.
Ruby doesn’t really want to fight Cinder now. She’s even talked to whatever authorities remain about getting Cinder a level of amnesty for helping in the last couple seasons.
Cinder tries to bait her into getting angry and attacking her but Ruby calls her bluff and tells her to just be honest for once in her life.
Cinder says that due to her upbringing she needs to contextualize events in a specific way.
Ruby needs to beat her in a fight. Properly.
No berserk insanity, no grimm arm weaknesses, just the definitive one on one show of strength.
Only then can she accept the reality where it’s possible for her to be sister to such a good entity as Ruby.
Otherwise she’s just going to fuck off to parts unknown, content with her stupid worldview.
Ruby tells her to stop being such a chuunibyou, but admits that she still has some shit to work out herself and the best way she knows to do that is a fight.
Ruby vs. Cinder.
Vergil 3 motherfuckers.
The definitive, badass, rival match, season and series final boss fight.
The wheel of fate is turning, heaven or hell, let’s rock!
The fight goes through everything.
Going from shooting, to melee, to fire duel, back to melee, to hand-to-hand, ending in a MGS4 style exhausted slugfest, all interlaced with flashbacks and shit, culminating in a mutual cross-counter.
Final punch, both of them nail each other on the cheek.
They glare at each other for a second, each other’s fists in their faces.
Cinder falls (ha) over first.
Ruby declares victory before collapsing next to her.
They have an absolutely exhausted heart-to-heart.
They reflect on the events of the series and accept each other as sisters.
Cinder accepts the name, ‘Cinder Rose’.
Four months later.
World is recovering from the conflict well.
Grimm still exist.
As long as negative emotions exist, Salem’s grudge will also. But without centralized control, the grimm are just hyper-combative and aggressive animals that crop up now and again, but can be curtailed easily enough if direct threat is posed.
Hunters still need to exist, but grimm aren’t world ending level threat anymore.
RWBY has been enjoying a little time off together as they do minor logistical work.
JNP(P)R have been palling around doing the same as RWBY, very much enjoying having Pyrrha back.
Team CEMN is now official with its members working as a sort of penal squad to work off their respective sentences.
They’ve got house arrest in their downtime though.
Only exception is when they’re working or have supervision from someone trustworthy.
Better than prison or doing the hempen jig so... take what you can get.
Kingdoms use the framework of Ozpin’s surveillance system as a communication and connectivity network instead of a ‘big brother’ type system of control.
Big get together with everyone.
Beacon is about to reopen under Headmaster Qrow Branwen.
RWBY and JNP(P)R decide that getting the Hunter GED equivalent might be the best option for them, considering they’re infinitely more experienced than any first year has a right to be.
Agree to a grad-student type arrangement to still be involved, though.
Everyone’s having a good time. Everyone’s connecting and blowing off steam.
Ruby peaks out and goes off on her own for a particular reason.
Ruby has final moment of series, talking to Summer’s grave.
Turn around and sees all her friends, family, and teammates.
Says she loves them all, half talking to the audience as well.
Red Like Roses plays as it fades to statues of Team RWBY in a cathedral or altar type place.
Fin.
Season nine done.
War arc done.
Series done.
Boom-shakalaka.
Season of mini-episodes mostly for the fluff, fun, and because I say so.
1. Cinder awkwardly bonding with her new family, despite her best efforts.
2. Raven having a moment with Tai and Qrow about Summer.
3. Pyrrha reuniting with her family post-resurrection and dealing with the fallout of Myrmidon.
4. Weiss and Blake visiting Jacques and Sienna in their respective prisons.
5. Ironwood, Glynda, and others talk about Ozpin, reflecting that he really was kind of an asshole.
6. Team CEMN on mission, very slowly becoming actual friends.
7. Team CFVY make plan to transfer back to Beacon during sparring match with SSSN.
8. Flashback episode for team RWBY when they were children and still had much to learn.
9. Ilia and Blake talking about the restructuring of the White Fang.
10. Un-incarcerated Schnees talking about the future of the company.
11. RWBY and CEMN little sparring fun for stress relief.
12. Flashback thing with team STRQ, going through their forming and breaking.
13. Cinder going on an apology tour. (Pyrrha still hates her guts but not enough to kill her).
14. Qrow and Raven have big over the top dork duel because they’re both dorks.
15. JNPR has moment of “Wow, we REALLY didn’t sign up for that but we made out fine enough,”
16. Team SSSN wondering just what the holy hell all that was about.
17. Ciel and Penny reaffirm their friendship with each other, even though their team is long gone.
18. Flashback to Salem and Ozpin’s original falling out, showing that they were assholes even back then.
19. RWBY are made official huntresses and start a proper career of grimm killing and peace keeping.
20. Flash forward a generation or three later and someone telling their kid/grandkid team RWBY’s story.
I did this because I felt the need to and nobody could stop me. Too many aspects of the show pissed me off just a little too much and I know that all this amounts to is my insane ramblings, but I did it anyway. Will I ever be put in charge of an actual RWBY reboot or something of that measure? Fucking no. Will this change anyone’s minds? Probably not. Was this entertaining to read? I certainly hope so. But, in the end, I had a ton of fun doing this and have made the points I wanted to make. That’s just about all I care about in the end.
I regret nothing.
