Unhinged analysis - Sanemi

Why's Sanemi so aggro? (Part 1)

Sanemi is one of the most controversial characters in Demon Slayer and the most misunderstood, along with Obanai. People in the fandom just take him at face value, and it is a disservice to his character. You don't have to love him, but at least try to understand him, his background and how it all contributes to his behavior. So this is a character analysis on, in my opinion, the coolest motherfucker in Demon Slayer. Lesssgoooo!

His introduction

Sanemi's Hashira intro remains one of my favorite in the series. This is because we're fed so much information about him in such a short time.

The first thing we see are the W7s, the uniform belts around his shins, instead of the standard kyahan that other characters wear.

Then we see his back, his white haori which tells us nothing about his breathing style. At least with the others we can make an estimated guess at theirs. The only decoration is the kanji 殺(kill). Which is interesting because it's in the same position as the 滅(destroy) that we see on the backs of other slayer's uniforms.

Then we hear his voice for the first time. His speech is similar to that of a Yakuza member. I'll explain more later.

We then get the first glimpse of our man.

We notice a bunch of things. One is the fact that he's holding Nezuko's box with one hand, which tells us yea, this dude is strong as fuck. Then we see that his uniform is open at the chest, indicating a lack of care for his safety. We see the scars which lets us know that this guy has been through some shit, and he still keeps his chest open??? Nah.

Then we finally see his face and woah! The scary jagged scars, wild hair and bloodshot eyes combined with his rude way of speaking. We come to the conclusion: Oh my God! This guy's a crackhead!

Only kidding! But we can tell that this guy is not to be messed with and from the Jaws music that plays in the background and his signature Hashira theme, we also know that he's going to be trouble for our protagonist.

So let's break it down further with the first aspect of his introduction.

His haori, the kanjis, and their significance

Destruction has a certain impersonal feeling to it, like you destroy bad things not because you want to, but because you have to. Within the context of Demon Slayer, it's no different, the slayers have to destroy the demons because they are a blight on the world and there are no personal feelings about it. We can see it from the way Giyuu almost killed Nezuko, the way he killed Rui, the way Shinobu and Kanao almost killed Nezuko, and the way Zenitsu and Inosuke also killed demons.

Even in this episode where the Hashiras are introduced, their plans to execute Tanjiro and Nezuko show no personal feelings towards the situation, no maliciousness, and no hate. Nezuko is a demon she has to be killed. Tanjiro was harboring a demon so he has to be killed too and something tells me this isn't the first time they had to deal with a situation like this.

Kill, on the other hand, is very much personal and malicious in its intent. It doesn't matter if the target is bad for the world or not. What matters is that the killer thinks they're bad, and that alone is a justification to eliminate them. It's not about duty, it's a want spurred on by hatred, and Sanemi is full of hatred. We can see it from the sadistic way he stabs Nezuko, and the way he laughs at Tanjiro’s pain. Even when he wanted to test Nezuko with his blood, he gives her more unnecessary stabs instead of just simply opening the box.

Honestly, just by the kanji alone, I would’ve been surprised if he didn’t stab Nezuko. A demon can save baby orphans and kittens and sweet little old ladies from a burning building, and Sanemi will still gut the motherfucker.

Then there’s the color of his haori. The haoris, or absence of haoris, of the other characters (excluding Muichiro and Mitsuri) reveal information about their heritage, past, beliefs, and other aspects of their identity that extend beyond their role as Demon Slayers.

Sanemi has no heritage like Rengoku. We’re not given anything that tells us about his past like Giyuu. The kanji for Kill on his haori is in the same position as the Destroy on the standard uniform because, for Sanemi, being a Demon Slayer or more specifically a killer of demons IS his identity. It’s all he cares about, his entire life and the core of his existence. He has a one-track mind, and Kill Demons is the only song playing on a loop.

He doesn’t have time for anything he deems ‘frivolous’, has no special variation to his uniform aside from the fact that he keeps the chest open, and the uniform belts he wears around his legs are probably faster to put on than the standard kyahan.

So from his haori and kyahan alone we can tell that this guy is very strong, very wild and very dangerous.

Extra note: While doing research for this post, I also noticed that Sanemi’s haori is similar to the shirt he wore as a child, which could indicate how much his childhood affected him and how it led to his hatred of demons. Instead of the sleeve stripes, there is now the Kill kanji on the back.

Now let's move onto the other aspect of his introduction

His way of speaking

This part is based on my little understanding of the Japanese language and the research I did. So please don't attack me!

Sanemi kinda speaks like a thug or a Yakuza member. It isn't really noticeable in the English subtitles, but he uses particles and sentence endings that are typically used by men and can come across as rude, unrefined, and uneducated.

He doesn't use honorifics (unless speaking to the Master) when talking to people, even his fellow Hashiras.

He uses sentence endings such as ぜ (ze), ぞ (-zo), な (-na), か (-ka), かよ (-kayo) and だな (-da na) that make his questions and statements sound commanding, rough and forceful.

Not only that, but he often uses words such as:

"Urusee!" - a rough and rude way of saying "Urusai"

"Temee" - a rude way of saying you.

"Ore" - a very informal pronoun for "I"

Sanemi's way of speaking bears a teeny tiny resemblance to the Kansai dialect, which is like the Southern accent in the US. Kansai people are stereotyped as being uneducated, stupid, loud and aggressive.

That's why Tanjiro(bestest boy ❤) was shocked when Sanemi switched up real quick as he was speaking to the Master.

His default manner of speaking, even when it's to those who he likes or is okay with, is rough, forceful, aggressive and sometimes confrontational. It tells us about his personality and most importantly his upbringing or lack thereof.

I'll be going into his background in the Part 2 of this post, I'll also talk about how all these aspects makes our boy act the way he does.

rare tuesdaypost with no fallow sections. i CANNOT find the exact image i am looking for (mouse-drawn person sitting on bar stool with ankles crossed and blushing with eyelashes) but i feel like i found a lot of things this week that charmed me immensely. rare many such cases of many interests intersecting.

almost exactly a year ago i wrote about jolynn j chin's SHIFTED, a piano jazz piece where the time signatures change on every bar, which came with an explainer video that is, spiritually, a physics video.

she's done it again with OFF TIME and a full album of equally bonkers concepts. i have a brain that is fairly good at manipulating 2D things (yarn, fabric) into 3D things but i do Not have this kind of math brain. wild shit.

thank you philip for overseeing the photography of this trio of DELILAH DIRK graphic novels from Tony Cliff. i saw these on the library shelf and went "holy shit i read one of these as a webcomic in high school".

very well-paced indiana jones and james bond adjacent pulp adventures, with a soupcon of steampunk conveyances for taste. delilah started life in 2007 when strong snappy female characters were far less common. this is particularly...not quite grating, but very notable in the first two books (published in 2013 and 2016 respectively). they are intended to be middle-grade (disney villain falling deaths, no tits or ass, etc), but they punch far above their intended age range. a particularly interesting reckoning with the long-suffering native guide trope. not a series overly concerned with historical accuracy, although it's certainly more grounded in real history than you might expect of a middle-grade pulp adventure graphic novel. more colonial political concerns than i remembered or expected.

the art is really killer in all three books. tony cliff really knows the effect of a good page turn spread.

he also has a very charming way of illustrating continuing action across a huge panel. all four shots are from The Pillars of Hercules (2018) bc it happened to be the last one i read and the one with by far the most ambitious art.

watching

tubi has acquired the streaming rights to most of the batman animated movies. i keep getting served ads on instagram for an upcoming animated film about batman and the yakuza, where the premise is that a portal from real-life japan has opened up over gotham and the yakuza are pouring through like a demonic horde. this seems to be a sequel to batman ninja (2018, dir. Junpei Mizusaki)

Batman, along with his allies and adversaries, finds himself transported from modern Gotham City to feudal Japan.

batman ninja includes the lines:

I’m going to rule this country and turn it into a kingdom of monkeys and rewrite the history of the world!

and

What am I going to do with you, Batman? You’ve destroyed a perfectly good giant robot castle!

i would describe this as more of a feature-length animation showcase than anything else. the haters on letterboxed didn't even give it an average of 3 but that's bc they hate fun. this is some real weeb shit. this is not a grimdark or particularly thoughful batman entry. this is an entry to clap your hands in glee at the giant gundam vs monkey army fight. they have once again done my favorite comics boy jason todd dirty but what the fuck else is new.

so much fun even on just the like tree field guide level of identifying the six or seven animation styles. plus everyone's feudal japan looks are sick as shit.

was it Good? no. was i delighted at nearly every moment? fuck yeah.

(image from the developer) you've got your little baba yaga house gundam in the center constantly firing projectiles, and you have to keep these fucking birds back. you can WASD around the edges of the tapestry, and your health is in the top (i really love how it gets "ruined" dark chunks taken out of it as you lose health, like a piece of embroidery decaying) and the bottom black bar of motifs fills up as you make progress towards adding another level and another piece to your powerup level tapestry.

(following images from me) you do have to think about your placement and plan it out a bit, and you can't embroider over something you've already stitched. would not recommend surrounding your initial base damage motif with other motifs bc then you've sort of fucked yourself over. a really simple concept (a good bite size for a game jam) elevated by a very fun visual style and great music. really delighted me! i am so jaded by my time in the video game marketing mines that i forgot they can be fun actually!

unphotographable: too many bugs in my house! tried to replace the weatherstripping on my front door and discovering that both the front door and the storm door were installed incorrectly and should probably be replaced.

Which of the following ShigaDeku fic ideas sound the most interesting to you?

I have a handful of ShigaDeku fics I've been consistently working on over the past couple of months. I keep switching back and forth and writing out small scenes for each story in order to get a sense of the direction I want to take them in. They're all different flavors of dark romance and hurt/comfort and have great potential. I just can't decide which one I want to write first. Help meeeeeee! 😭😭😭

Long-lost childhood friends to mortal enemies to soulmates.

Heroes vs. villains dilemma (fixing systemic issues in hero society together with Hawks + Aizawa + the League of Villains).

Izu and Shiga discovering they're not only childhood friends but also soulmates whose souls are tied to each other for eternity.

Set in canon universe and loosely follows the MHA storyline EXCEPT it actually has a genuinely hopeful ending, gives the League a redemption arc, and achieves lasting changes for society!

Yakuza Stepbrother AU

Dark romance, suspense, hurt/comfort, and crime drama.

Izu and Shiga are stepbrothers through Inko's secret marriage to All For One fifteen years prior to the beginning of the story.

Shigaraki inheritance dilemma (Izu signs away his rights to the fortune away because Inko (on her deathbed) told him to do so in order to protect him from getting involved with mafia drama. Too bad she didn't consider Shiga becoming obsessed with Izu upon meeting him and dragging him into the mafia world anyway). 😅

Yakuza territory war dilemma (because Izu is technically Shiga's stepbrother by marriage, he's threatened strongly encouraged to stay with the Shigaraki family until its safe for him to move out.

Tartarus Rehabilitation AU

Dark romance, thriller, hurt/comfort, and psychological drama.

Izu is a therapist-in-training who believes in rehabilitation for criminals. Shiga is a serial killer incarcerated in Tartarus for going on killing sprees targeting people who are cruel to animals.

Due to one of Izu's co-workers being sick, he's called in to cover for an interview with none other than Shiga himself. By the end of the interview, Shiga becomes infatuated with Izu and refuses to speak to anyone else or release important details about his murders unless Izu is the one questioning him.

Shiga's obsession eventually becomes worse and worse until he breaks out of Tartarus with the help of All For One (because of course he does) and Izu is like, well shit, time to go into hiding!

Paranormal Fantasy AU

Dark romance, paranormal fantasy, hurt/comfort, and horror.

Izu is a mystic who specializes in healing medicine for immortal beings like vampires, lycans, shapeshifters, mages, certain kinds of demons, undead, cursed beings, and of course, all of the supernatural hunters who get hurt keeping these beings in line.

Shiga is a hybrid of unknown origin (haven't decided if he's going to be a half-demon or half-vampire yet) who gets grievously injured one day defending his territory from an opposing coven leader.

Dabi drags Shiga to Izu's remote cottage and demands that the mystics heal his coven leader or he'll slaughter him right then and there. Izu, never being able to deny someone in need of healing, decides that he'll heal Shiga as long as his coven provides protection while he stays in their territory, and Dabi agrees.

Over the course of a week, Shiga stays in Izu's cottage with him as Izu slowly uses his magic to heal Shiga's wounds. Shiga spends the entire time obsessively taking in every detail of Izu's life, trying to figure out why he's on the run and how Shiga can make Izu join his coven and make him stay with Shiga forever.

Pretty please let me know which one of these story ideas you liked the most! My ADHD brain is really struggling with which one to go for, so I would really appreciate your opinion on these. 💚💚💚

Born to live and die by that ideal, which transforms into a tragedy in the 2nd chapter when she refuses to let her master kill a girl and instead shoulders the burden of his revenge—so that he is saved and doesn't get executed. Tries her best to sway the trial and when caught, goes "actually I am not a human being, I am just a tool, so the REAL killer is master, y'all voted wrong" so that he is the one to live and leave the island and the rest (including her) get killed in the process. Oh and right before that, there's a dramatic portion where she pretends to be a deranged serial killer with an anime mask and starts reciting the serial killer's lines. Of course her façade gets blown by the resident serial killer enthusiast princess but still.....).

Allen Walker: To start, his left arm is a demon hunting weapon that can turn into a sword that he at one time stabbed himself through the chest with intentionally. His uncle lives in his mind and is trying to take over his body. His left eye was cursed by his adoptive dad after he tried to bring him back to life. He has gone through so much in his life and there is still soo much that we don't know about him. And there is so much more I could talk about but won't. Vote Allen if you like characters that have never had a break in their life

The city streets were dimly lit, the neon signs casting a sickly glow over the alleys. It was a night like any other in the depraved city where the law was Yakuza, where shadows hid unspeakable deeds. Kakihara Masao, the S&M freak of the Anjo gang, had been out dealing with a rival gang, as per usual. Few things could get a kick out of him, and finding new ways to torture traitors to death was one of them.

As he returned to his new home - The traditional villa which belonged to his wife, the daughter of their ally gang's boss, he felt a nagging unease. Something was off, but he couldn't tell why.

Ever since he left the house that day, with a departing kiss as was the daily routine, he had a gnawing feeling eating away at his brain, sinking his heart with worry.

He cared little what happened to him, or to anyone else - The only thing that mattered in his life anymore was to keep his beloved angel happy - And very much alive. She was a fantastic businesswoman, and the gang's designated medic, owning a whole chains of successful private hospitals - Which only put a huge target on her head. How could she sleep at night so peacefully Kakihara could never understand.

Was it her unshakeable trust in him, the husband her father wanted so desperately to tie to her? Her childhood crush, her teenage craze, her adult soulmate? Or was it the numerous bodyguards patrolling the house perimeter in a 200m radius in all directions at any given moment?

This girl was more guarded than the Emperor or the president, and yet...

Pushing the door open, he was greeted by an eerie silence, not by his wife's dolcetto voice, her warm embrace and sweet kiss. His heart pounded in his chest as he called out for his angel, but there was no response. The house was dark, and a sense of dread washed over him. He flicked on the lights and froze. The scene before him was a nightmare he's had many times before. The result of his failure.

Y/N lay on the floor, blood pooling around her. Her body was covered in slashes, the unmistakable work of that psychopath bastard, Ichi. Tears of pain stained her porcelain cheeks and her face was twisted in a petrified expression. Even unconscious, she was terrified and in pain.

Y/N hated pain. She was as vanilla as could be; Masao could never understand her; How she'd cry from the littlest amount of pain, when his euphoria came from a place of excruciating agony. A princess, she was an angel, of course she'd be delicate like a fragile little snowdrop, whilst he's a demon, a vulgar devil, corrupting and tainting the Heavens around her.

Kakihara's mind raced as he rushed to her side, dropping to his knees. She was still alive, but barely. Her breathing was shallow, and her eyes fluttered open when she felt his presence.

"Masa..." she whispered, her voice weak and trembling. "Ichi is looking for you."

He gently cradled her in his arms, his usually apathetic scarred visage contorted with guilt and rage. "Stay with me, angel. I’ve gotchu. Just hold on."

Kakihara wasted no time, carefully lifting her in his arms, bridal style just like he loved - Just like on their wedding - Yet now, she looked like a broken doll; His heart was breaking at the sight of her injuries. Once outside of the house, he yelled at the useless bodyguards who allowed this mess to happen - None of them saw or even heard anything. That bastard was too good.

Ironically, they drove to her own hospital which was nearby, though the road felt eternal and every second that ticked by was filled with the fear that he might lose her.

The doctors quickly took her in for emergency surgery, and Kakihara was staring after her as she was swiftly rolled on the bed, to the sterilised room; His mind was a storm of fury and worry. He couldn't stay there, not while Ichi was still out there. His blood boiled with wrath, a primal need for vengeance driving him.

"Princess L/N is in critical condition, but she will make a full recovery." the head doctor informed Kakihara. "She will need to take it easy and rest at home - No effort whatsoever - And for a while, some assistance." the old man continued; He looked left and right, then spoke in a hushed tone. "Was it that son of a bitch, Ichi?" Masao grunted affirmatively.

"Not for long." he sneered under his breath. "I'll be back." his voice was cold and steely.

With that, he left on his hunt to rip that fuckass apart, his mind singularly focused on one thing: finding Ichi and making him pay for every little scratch on her skin, for every second of agony, and for every nightmare she'll have from then on.

He reached out to his contacts, scoured the streets, and left no stone unturned. The hunt was relentless, driven by his love and desire to protect the only sun ray in his bleak, dark world, the burning hatred for the man who had hurt her. No living being was allowed to approach her with any mal intent, let alone actually commit such a vicious act against an angel. That fucker will rot.

He hadn't slept, hadn't eaten, hadn't drunk until he found him, but finally after so long, in the dead of night, Kakihara cornered Ichi in a dilapidated warehouse. The killer stood there, his face twisted in a sickening grin, clearly enjoying the chaos he had caused - Yet at the same time, his visage was twisted in a troubled look; This bitch was fucked in the head, he was out of his mind. His brain wasn't wired properly, even by Masao's standards.

Kakihara wasted no time. "You little fuckass!" he roared, his voice echoing through the empty space. "You dared to touch her! My angel! You took the one reason I had to stay alive!"

Ichi barely had time to react before Kakihara launched himself at him. The fight was brutal, both men driven by their own wicked desires and madness. Masao's rage gave him an edge. He didn't hold back, inflicting as much pain as he could, relishing in every scream that tore from Ichi's throat. That bastard couldn't even raise that sickle leg of his to slice him off - What a pussy ass cunt. He dared mess with his angel, without thinking of the hell he will receive back.

Ichi was easily subdued, bloodied and broken. Kakihara stood over him, his eyes wild with fury. "Look into my eyes and despair, you fucking freak." he snarled, before delivering the final blow. The life drained from Ichi's eyes, and Kakihara felt a grim satisfaction wash over him. "I love overkill."

He stood there, watching all the blood drain from his pathetic body, kicking it every once in a whole, hoping to vent out his remaining rage before he appeared before his sweet girl. There was only one place he needed to be, and that was by his angel's side.

Covered in blood, he returned to the hospital - Thankfully, one of her bodyguards had a spare shit for him to change in; He couldn't possibly embrace an angel while he was painted red with her assailant's filthy blood.

The doctors informed him that Y/N was awake and stable, but still exhausted. He entered her room quietly, his heart aching at the sight of her frail, broken form, leaning down on that white bed, wrapped in white sheets. White looked good at her, but colours were her favourite. The hospital room was too lame for her.

"Y/N." he whispered, sitting beside her on the edge of the bed, taking her hands in his and kissing her fingers. "Fucker's dead, and my arms are all yours to sleep in, angel." he said, laying down and gathering her carefully in his embrace. "No one's ever gonna dare mess around with my girl." he kissed the top of her head.

She opened her eyes, tears welling up as she looked at him. "Masa..." her eyes were gleaming with pure love and admiration. "You're my guardian hero."

He gently cradled her in his arms, nestling her like a little kitten in his clothes, holding her close and whispering soothing words. "I'm here, angel. I'm always here. I won't let anything happen to you ever again. I promise."

Kakihara felt a sense of peace; He had avenged his wife, rid the world of a useless scum, and now, all that mattered was Y/N's recovery. He would stay by her side, protect her, and ensure that no harm ever came to her again. In that moment, as he held her, he knew that no matter the darkness of their world, he will remain alive, to protect her from the evil surrounding her eden.

before you ask about the language barrier i like to believe that fox learned japanese while on the pusher case since he was literally targeted and had to figure out a weeb serial killer’s mind games. (see the episodes titled “Pusher” and “Kitsunegari”). This asshole went to oxford and the federal academy and was a top of his class criminal profiler, is him picking up a language quickly that hard to believe?

If caves are deep enough, they stay the same temperature year-round.

Mion didn't remember what year of science class she'd heard that, but it was one of the things she clung to as she wrapped her arms around her folded legs and huddled into herself where she sat. Blazing summer or snow-thick winter, deep caves like this one held steady at around 10 C.

Dressed in only her long hair and her sheer nightgown, Mion badly needed that reassurance. She might feel like she was steadily getting colder, but she wasn't. It was just –psychosomatic. 10 Celsius was still cold, especially in thin cotton like this, and so she fell into the illusion that the cold was deepening when it was really just her enduring the chill for way too damn long.

Shion would-

She cut that thought off at the knees. She didn't know what her sister would do, now. She was… erratic. Unpredictable.

Mion closed her eyes and pressed her face against her knees, taking in several deep, shuddering breaths. Don't- don't think about that. Don't think about Batcha. Don't think about how her sister- don't.

Deep breaths. In, out.

She needed to use her training as the family heir, focus, and think. Strip the emotion from the situation and solve it –reactions could come later.

She was- she was locked up in the cells beneath the estate. Her clothes had been taken and switched out for a sheer nightdress –in another situation she'd snicker about victims in a cheesy horror flick don't think about it don't think about it– and she had no resources in her cell beyond pebbles and perhaps a handful of grit. Food and water were deposited just outside her cell periodically, and the privy hole in the back of the cell was too small to count for anything.

Stripping and changing her was a nice touch, Mion reflected gloomily. In the big city, of course, that was just another crime on a rap sheet, but out in the mountains, in the woods, in the wilderness… well. She wouldn't get far –even if she did manage to escape her cell– while barefoot and in a nightie.

Mion would be the first to admit that her family dealt in shady things, but she would also be the first to subsequently defend them from murder accusations. Her family weren't killers. Yakuza, yes. Willing to kill… yes, sometimes.

But they weren't murderers. Her father's organization –especially after becoming subordinate to Batcha– were focused on power and profit, not bodycounts. It wasn't wise to draw police attention, and cleaning up bodies was expensive. Relying on their fearsome reputation –and yes, willingness to get their hands dirty with torture when they did need to back up their threats– did most of the work.

But because the underworld was mainly ruled by force, and because the leader of the Sonozaki family needed to use craft and guile, Mion's extracurricular education had been somewhat unconventional –and so, by extent, had Shion's.

If you have prisoners, make them go barefoot. Take as many of their clothes as you can, so that exposure helps prevent escape. Do not let them acquire resources. Do not let them interact with any other prisoners.

Being on the flip side of those rules felt a lot less academic.

Mion took another deep, shuddering breath, pressing her face into her knees harder, until she could feel the bone squeezing against her eye sockets.

She had no resources. The cell door was locked, and her meal times were sparse and erratic. She was —trapped.

And she knew Shion. She knew her sister; knew her as easily as she did her right and left hands. Or… so she had thought.

Because training demanded that she try and understand the moods and motives of her captor, and Mion couldn't. Shion was… she'd been…

Insane felt like such a flimsy word to describe the complete upending of Mion's world. Shion wasn't like that, and Mion had thought she'd known her sister all the way down to her deepest heart. But, apparently, she hadn't; and the demons lurking down there were fearsome and cruel indeed.

Shion wasn't like this. Right? She wouldn't- she would never-

Mion didn't blame her sister for resenting Batcha. In her place, Mion would do the same. Maybe she already did, a little. But the jump from resentment to murder, even unintentional, was across such a large gap-

It felt like there was a piece missing, a trigger. There had to be. Right?

This kind of thing just didn't happen without triggers. There had to be a cause, an impetus. Shion couldn't be like this, hiding a side of herself so deep down that even Mion had never found it.

… right?

Deep in the cavern of cells, Mion shivered miserably.

AN: 10 Celsius is 50 Fahrenheit, for my fellow Americans. I also work night shift now, so for anyone who cares the chapters will be coming later in the mornings, since I get off my shift at midnight.

This season looks whack. There's so many notable series, there's definitely something for everyone this season. Of course starting off with the big ones:

Demon Slayer Season 3 - The Swordsmith Village Arc

Attack on Titan: The Final Season The Final Chapters

Dr Stone Season 3

While those all look amazing and all:

Bocchi is back baby!!!

Season 2 of Ranking of Kings is back this season. Their story telling is top tier and if you didnt' check out the first season, now is the time to do so.

All these amazing new seasons to look forward to, but this season doesn't stop there, the new series set to debut look absolutely killer too:

Hell's Paradise gets it's anime release, produced by MAPPA of course. This is definitely my most anticipated for the season.

Followed by MASHLE. While I had fun with the manga, I ultimately couldn't get past the art style. The anime should complete the picture for me and this will definitely be one of the top comedy series this season.

Lastly for the big name debut series: Oshi no Ko

This series takes a second to get into but it's taken the manga world by storm and has already gotten its english translations with only 11 japanese releases so far. The story is definitely worth sticking around for and will likely be one if not the top show of the season.

As for some lesser known series, I've gone through this seasons' release schedule and filtered through the trailers to pick out the ones that might be worth watching... I honestly wasn't expecting for there to be so many. So like I said, there's definitely something for everyone this season.

Heavenly Delusion

I'm such a sucker for adventure series, throw in sci-fi and I'm hooked. While this definitely gives me Made in Abyss and Promised Neverland vibes, I'm not sure it'll be on the same level.

So far episode 1 looks absolutely amazing. Post-apocalyptic world with the contrast of the two stories, one of kids inside a sanctuary with little outside world knowledge and the kids that live and survive outside. Definitely worth watching.

A Galaxy Next Door

I'm surprised this is even being aired already. I swear the english volumes for the manga just released earlier this year. I've heard mixed things about the series but I think this'll be worth checking out.

Skip to Loafer

I've heard so much about this series and it's honestly got the golden trio of tags. It's a Slice of life comedy romance and the style and characters are so cute. I'll definitely be giving this a full watch through.

Insomniacs after School

This kind of looks like an irl version of Call of the Night but after watching the trailers a bit more it still looks like a lot of fun. It's about these two students who're unable to sleep and what they do when they stay up. They end up joining the astronomy club and overall it looks like it'll be a really pretty and relaxing series.

Dead Mount Death Play

Most manga collectors will have heard of this series. It's supposed to be quite a decent thriller/supernatural series. While I haven't had a chance to read through it, I think it's about time we got another good supernatural show. I'll definitely be checking it out.

Magical Destroyers

This straight up looks like utter chaos. Whether that's good or not I guess we'll find out. It's under the mahou shoujo tag?? but it's about a radical group that is trying to eliminate the otaku culture from Japan. This guy "Otaku Hero" stands up and tries to stop them. It sounds wild and kind of looks like a passion project. I'll give it 3 episodes.

My Home Hero

This is straight up a western drama movie. Similar vibes to Taken this guy kills his daughters yakuza boyfriend and gets caught up in the criminal underground. It's definitely a new trope for anime so I'll be giving it 5 episodes.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury S2

While technically this is a continuation of a series, I feel like many people didn't watch the first half unless they were already into gundam. I never grew up with it and truthfully I just lumped it in with transformers so I never checked it out.

Lots of people have been saying that this reboot it really solid and a good way to get into the series. After watching the trailer I totally understand, the characters all look great and the story looks like a solid sci-fi series. I'll definitely be watching to catch up to the new releases.

Yuri Is My Job

I've head of this series all over the place in the manga world and I know it's one of the more popular shoujo ai. Essentially it seems the plot is that these 2 girls end up working together at a themed cafe and start falling for each other. I don't really have any interest in shoujo ai series (frankly i just started getting into romance series in general) so I'll give it 3 episodes and see how it goes.

The Dangers in My Heart

This is one of those - unlikely mc's gets attention from the pretty love interest. After watching the first episode I can say it definitely isn't the same as the others. The girl is super weird and I like his commentary of all the shit he does. Pretty fun and worth a try at least.

Loving Yamada at Lv999

This looks like a fun lighthearted romance. I'll give it 5 episodes.

Otaku Elf

Pretty much as the title says it's about an Otaku Elf. I think this hoenstly looks like a fun series and as long as you're not looking for more plot, it'll be a good time.

Blue Orchestra

While I think a decent number of people will like the series, I know for sure I'll drop it due to the cgi. I just feel that CGI isn't at the stage where it feels natural enough with the rest of the animations and it really takes away from my watching experience.

My god. I had no clue they redid this but I'll 100% be watching this now lol. They rebooted Tokyo Mew Mew.

This was one of the first anime I watched growing up.

The second season is airing this season - Tokyo Mew Mew New S2

in case anyone else grew up watching it and wats to catch up.

And of course, the isekais.

We've now evolved from just the standard isekais to isekais with a twist.

I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in the Real World, too.

I'll give it 3 episodes but unsurprisingly I don't think i'll stick with it.

The Legendary Hero is Dead!

This looks a little different from the ususal, I'll give it 3 episodes.

Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion

This is a full send fantasy shoujo romance and I thought I had had enough of the royal isekai trope but apparently not. The cheese of the romance has sucked me in again with the pretty animations to top it off. I'll be giving it a good 3 episodes.

The Ecchi series for the season:

KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World

This honestly looks like fun but I've had my fair share of this kind of show. This is a fantasy ecchi isekai comedy. I'll still give it 3 episodes.

Megami no Cafe Terrace

Frankly I have no interest in ecchi harem series like this but the quality looks decent so I've added it here for those who want something to watch along those lines this season.

here's like just an overall summary of each of my OCs because i feel like it's sort of overdue plus i feel like if i mention an oc, anyone who doesnt know me that well could just be like "lmao which one is that"

Gan: Storm Vanguard, all her life she had wandered between worlds, forever without a home or a family, until being found and recruited by The Director. Now she leads the Vanguard in their mission to keep their multiverse safe.

Jax: Chaos Vanguard, he was once a powerful yakuza in a dystopian Tokyo in the 22nd century. After an attempt to conquer worlds and harness death and being defeated, he now seeks self-redemption through his training.

Jang: Blood Vanguard, a succubus demon who rules a city between Heaven and Hell with their siblings. After being betrayed by their brother they realise that every world, not just theirs, is worth being protected.

Jayn: Beast Vanguard, a spirit capable of transforming into a Beast and harnessing the Aurora Borealis. After being trapped on the other side of time, she grew from a young girl to a strong soldier, growing ever more powerful.

Jay: Dragon Vanguard, cursed as a child to become a half-dragon when she came of age, she learned the secrets of the monsters and creatures infesting her world and with the help of a shapeshifter she is able to control her other form.

Tyler: Rain Jotunn, a seemingly ordinary person compared to his friends, used to work in his family's cafe, however he realises that his origins are far from human - he was born in a world that had turned completely barren and unlivable because of monsters.

Yoshi: Ice Jotunn, a former prince who had run away from his fated path, unwilling to become the killer he was trained to be. Upon meeting Jayn, the spirit he was unknowingly trained to kill, he devotes himself to her and now fights alongside her as her protector.

Higurashi When They Cry Hou Ch. 3 Tatarigoroshi pt. 16

With the discovery that Rika has died quite gruesomely I can't help but wonder again, what would have happened to Keiichi if he'd simply gone with Rena and Mion who were acting weird? Also, what was the deal with starting the chapter out with Teppei's lovers mutilated corpse being found? Was that just the motivator to get the plot a rolling? To incite Teppei into going back to Hinamizawa to kickstart the plot this go around?

The way it's described it sounds like she was executed the same way as Teppei's lover. But why? Earlier on in the section they implied that the murder was a retaliatory strike from the criminal elements of the Sonozaki group, since she had stolen a large sum of money. But why would they go to the trouble of killing Rika in a similar fashion, only with less mutilation to the corpse after the fact? Or is that a red herring, meant to lead you astray, and it's actually whoever is behind this latest spate of killings killing their victims in a similar fashion to the yakuza/money theft killing to try to throw off the trail?

Satoko, makes the quite reasonable decision to get away from a self-professed killer. Despite him arguing his innocence, it makes sense to want to get away from the person who just minutes ago was going on and on about gruesomely murdering a family member. Especially since Keiichi isn't acting at all mentally sound, and has a dangerous item on him.

Keiichi... you absolute idiot.

Satoko sure leapt to the possession conclusion awfully quickly. Which makes sense, in an earlier part she did seem to know what Keiichi was talking about when he mentioned the sound of extra footsteps following him.

In Chapter Two: Watanagashi, and indeed earlier, when Mion talks about the notion of Satoko being cursed I have to admit to not quite understanding what she meant at the time. I thought she was accusing Satoko of being the thing that was cursing those around her. That she was a cursed child, like a cursed object that would just have the curse emanate outwards from her affecting everyone else around her. Not that she was cursed by Oyashiro to have bad things happen to her, such as losing loved ones. It makes things take on a slightly different aspect than when it was brought up earlier. I was operating on a fundamental misunderstanding of what was meant by "Satoko is cursed." If Satoko thinks that she is cursed by Oyashiro, why then does she not act pensive or morose over the yearly Watanagashi festivals? She acts like it's a day like any other and has naught to do with her. Did Rika manage to convince her that the curse had been removed? Or is she just living with the yearly dread, and tries to just put a positive face out for the world in the hopes that maybe this time the curse will just pass her by?

Regardless Satoko shoves the thing that looks like Keiichi over the bridge. Or so it seems, it's a bit squiffy, because she was directly behind him when something shoves him from the side over the bridge.

Keiichi spends some time reflecting on the fact that these cruel words (and many more) are the last Satoko ever says to him. And how cruel it all is, because sure he's a murderer, but he did it for the good of everyone, and how can the universe not see that?

Out of context that's just a wild line. And so Keiichi finishes falling from the bridge into the stream below. Which he goes on to say is extraordinarily painful, which, yeah. Despite all of his claims of "demon rigidity" (paraphrasing) he still fell more than twenty feet down onto rocks. That shit's gonna hurt. And so, with Keiichi being dashed upon the rocks there is no chance left in the Chapter that the mystery is going to be solved. Most of the principal cast is dead, or vanished, and those who remain can't really shed light on the mysteries that remain.

One last TIP for the road. Is the reason Rika is so certain Oyashiro isn't a malevolent god because of the fact she probably is a reincarnation of it? Her divine status doesn't really seem to amount to much when she can still be killed like any regular old human. Although a bit of godly omnipotence would go a fair ways to explain why Rika always seems to have a certain amount of knowledge about situations she would otherwise have no way to know. If the last few generations of Furudes produced a daughter first every time what happened to the one from Rika's father's generation? More to the point what would they do if one generation one of the Furude matrons gave birth to twins? Wouldn't that upset the order if they gave birth to one boy, and one girl? Leaving aside the idea of twins like that, what happens if they did have twins? Just care for the one who came out first, and more or less just treat the second born as excess baggage?

Is that why the Furude bloodline is left to just Rika at the start of this series? Did the Furudes just ignore, and basically disown any potential siblings that might have been birthed in an effort to pursue this "divine bloodline?" Or do they just scrub the records of whatever children are born that aren't women until one gives birth to a daughter? Is that why there's no mention of the woman from the generation before Rika, and only her father gets mentioned? Or is this a "keeping the bloodlines pure" situation where its generational incest? And Rika's mom was actually her husband's sister?

Am I thinking too hard about this? I think I might be on to something with the twin angle, not sure what exactly, but there is another instance of twins being an issue with the three families of Onigafuchi. In one of the TIPS from chapter two it's expressly mentioned that twins are heavily looked down upon if not outright hated by the three families. Mentioning specifically that is they gave birth to twins they had to be culled.

You know, in BB, Rukia's in Karakura because of arrancar appearing there. But since Karakura is jureichi, it was under 13th divisions care from the start, so there is other shinigami who can recognize kaien when he see him. Did Kurumadani Zennosuke heard anything from his captain? I'm sure that other shinigami didnt heard anything from Ukitake, not yet, but he could talk to his own subordinates, right? Or is that the captain thought that his liutenant can hide from him?

Speaking of minor characters, I really want to see Kaien's reaction to that Don kanonji show where Ichigo jumped in. It can be more powerful weapon than the baby pictures...

Aside from the last couple months, Kaien's been in hiding and travelling with the other Visoreds. There's the very sticky political situation with the Shiba clan and the special order to execute Hollowfied Shinigami to consider, so Ukitake needs to handle this situation delicately for the best outcome.

Ukitake wants to keep Kaien's survival on the downlow as much as possible because right now, revealing that information would result in his second death. Something everyone dearly wishes to prevent.

In light of the same scenario playing out with Aizen as the precursor to his betrayal, how long would it take for people to accuse Kaien of faking his death and being on cohorts with the maniac?

The only people who know he's alive on Soul Society's side are Ukitake, Kyoraku, Kotetsu, Sentaro, Takanashi (5th seat OC) and Kukaku; Ukitake wants to keep it that way, which is why its referred to as 'The other matter' whenever one of those five bring it up in public.

As for Don Kanoji. I don't think Kaien really watched his shows. He's dealing with literal demons, thanks. Or if he did, he did so while drunk with the others to take the piss.

Although, hilariously enough; I had an a draft scene somewhere where Kaien actually happened across him the early morning after getting hammered at Kurosaki clinic while he's walking back to the Visored hideout.

With a killer hangover (His Hollow's complaining didn't help) the Spirit of the conversation when something like this:

Don Kan'oji: Boy! What has become of you?! Have you forsaken your noble ways!? That scar and that tattoo! Surely, such a thing could only come from dalliances with criminals and ne'er do wells!

Kaien, hiding his miserable face under his hoodie: I'm too hungover for this…

Don Kan'oji: My dear student has fallen from the path of righteousness and thrown his lot in with the Yakuza! Forgive your failure of a master for allowing you to stray! I shall endeavour to correct this at once! Come forthwith!

Kaien: Look pal, I haven't the slightest idea who you are but I'm hungover and the rest of the neighbourhood's still asleep. Have some consideration, for cryin' out loud.

Hollow!Kaien: … Can I eat him?

Kaien: Remember last time; we don't need the heartburn.

Don Kan'oji: Wait, what is that... I smell it. I smell that scent -

Kaien, uncomprehendingly: What are you on and why aren't you sharing?

Don Kan'oji: It could only mean, you're in cohorts with a bad spirit! Oh, the travesty - how could you betray your kin?!

Hollow!Kaien: Can we get out of here please? I can feel my non-existence braincells dying listening to this...

Kaien: I kinda wanna see how this ends now.

I'll let you decide if the Hollow spoke out loud or just in Kaien's head.
