Hello, I came to say that dragons are mythical creatures often depicted to be possessive in mythology and literature, sometimes known for their immense power, territorial instincts, and the symbolic association with hoarding wealth and treasures...
Twisted Wonderland in context, Malleus Draconia was confirmed to be a dragon fairy (essentially a dragon who can take a shape of a man), and I was curious if Malleus may have exhibited possessive traits in canon, whether through main story or vignette...?
The reason I ask that is because mischaracterizing characters or making them OOC is the last thing I want to do when it comes to writing or analyzing...
**Sorry if I was not able to word it in a way that you can understand what I'm trying to convey because sometimes I feel inferior that my wording may come off as blunt or insensitive. I just want to leave a brief note that I don't mean to come off as rude or dismissive. I appreciate your understanding!**
In my opinion, Malleus in canon is protective but not possessive. What do I mean by that? Glad you asked. Let's start by laying down some definitions.
In this situation, when I say “protective”, it implies good intentions. It means actively looking out for others' safety and wellbeing. To be possessive, on the other hand, implies a more controlling desire to own or to restrict another's actions. It’s commanding and demanding all of a person’s attention and love. It means having a disrespect for others' autonomy and instead trying to displace it with your will. (Yes, I know that you're probably automatically thinking of The Big Exception of book 7, but I will address that later in this post so hang on for a moment!)
This gets long, so buckle up! We’ve got a lot to talk about.
First thing's first, a lot of the "possessive Malleus" interpretations originate from fandom, especially when it comes to yandere, yume, or generally romantic fan works. (And to be clear: This is NOT to shame the folks who enjoy these kinds of works; I am only listing them here as examples.) Oftentimes this occurs due to individual fans bringing in ideas from media outside the bounds of Twisted Wonderland. This is totally expected and normal; there is no such thing as someone who has an interest in ONLY a singular thing. We will naturally apply our previous knowledge to help us understand and interpret new information.
For example, in irl mythology, fae are hurt by iron--and even in Disney's own films, such as Maleficent, iron is depicted as harming fae and sapping them of their power. This led to many Twst fans headcanoning that iron does the same thing to fae in Twisted Wonderland. However, we learn in book 7 that this is NOT true. Fae, particularly nobles, do find the smell of iron nauseating, but the metal does not appear to impede their powers or hinder them in any way. Lilia and his men are still able to dispatch several Silver Owls (who are dressed in iron arm and battle with iron tanks and other machinery) without issue.
Another example that’s pretty popular is fans believing that whole “if you tell a fairy your name, it grants them power over you” thing. Some have claimed this will come into play in book 7’s final battle. Others claim this is the deeper or secondary reason as to why Malleus doesn’t reveal his own name to Yuu until book 5, as giving his name would grant Yuu power over him. However, there’s nothing in-universe to suggest that names have cultural significance to fae or that any sort of power or status is granted by relinquishing one’s name. Yuu (or Malleus’s hundreds of other classmates) have also demonstrated no such control over him.
Remember: what is true outside of Twst, including in Disney's own works, is NOT necessarily true inside of Twst.
Going back to the initial question, I believe that "Malleus is possessive" is also a headcanon of a similar vein; fans are coming into Twst familiar with other mythos which state that dragons are possessive, territorial, and greedy on top of being powerful. Because Malleus is a dragon fae and is known to possess great power, it's very easy for fans to see the parallels between him and the dragons they already know of. This then leads to them filling in the gaps of his personality and projecting other stereotypical draconic traits onto him. In Malleus's case, this was extremely easy to do because it took a few years for him to see any significant spotlight in both event stories (Glorious Masquerade) and in the main story (book 7).
I think the easiest way for us to analyze whether Malleus is protective or possessive is to examine his closest relationships in the narrative of Twst. I will not be counting Sebek and Silver individually here, as they are both his bodyguards and Malleus maintains a mostly professional relationship with them. Instead, we shall look at Malleus's attitude by looking at his relationships with Lilia and Yuu, then proceed into discussing related behaviors.
I believe it's indisputable that Lilia is one of the most important people to Malleus. Lilia trained him, taught him, and trained him. He is basically Malleus's father figure. The fear of losing Lilia is what causes Malleus to emotionally spiral and take drastic measures in a desperate attempt to avoid that unhappy ending. His entire motivation for unleashing his UM is "not losing [Lilia]!" You would think that if Malleus was going to be possessive of anyone, it would be with Lilia. But the truth of the matter is... he's mostly just... not? Lilia is a very sociable person in the student body. He's frequently gaming with Idia, taking care of or lending wisdom to others (Silver, Sebek, etc.), hanging out with Cater and Kalim in their club, interacting with dorm leaders and freshmen when Malleus is absent for ceremonies, and more--yet Malleus doesn't seem to express any jealousy over sharing Lilia. I'd also like to add that although Malleus lacks parents, he doesn't really show envy over Lilia treating and calling Silver his own son instead of himself. Oh, Malleus certainly does express jealousy to some extent. Who would forget the time in his Dorm Uniform vignettes when he crushed Lilia's phone? The thing is though, the times when Malleus is upset are not fueled by not wanting to share Lilia or wanting to monopolize his time. In the previous example I cited, Malleus broke Lilia's phone because Lilia had received a picture Kalim and the other dorm leaders took after a meeting. Even the dialogue exchanged implies this; Malleus did not automatically get mad when he noticed that Lilia had a notification, he only got mad after realizing he was excluded from something the other dorm leaders were all involved in. Malleus was upset that he was not invited, not that Kalim was texting Lilia. Additionally, it is stated that the dorm leader must grant permission for others to use the lounge. If he wanted to, he could withhold the permission for Lilia, who wants the lounge for his farewell party (which everyone is invited to), or stipulate that he wants a more formal affair with just Diasomnia members present. Malleus doesn’t act in this possessive way though. He grants Lilia what he desires without issue.
Next up for scrutiny is Yuu! Now, there's some gray area here because part of Yuu's relationship with Malleus is defined by how much the player projects onto the self-insert/blank slate character. Please note that, when I discuss Yuu, I am leaving out individual interpretations and going STRICTLY by the information presenting in canon.
It can be said that Malleus slowly develops a fondness for Yuu's company over the course of the main story. At first, he is surprised and maybe even a little disappointed that someone has taken residence in Ramshackle--it used to be desolate, which makes it a perfect spot to visit on his nightly strolls. However, Malleus soon finds amusement in the fact that Yuu, not being of this world, has no clue who he is or what his status is. This grants him the freedom to speak at ease with this human and to "be himself" in a way that he cannot be with others, who typically cower at his name. You could also argue that Yuu telling Malleus they may have found a way home expedited the despair he felt in book 7, as he learned so quickly that two of his friends would be exiting his life soon. This, however, is not possessiveness. It's normal to have fear and anxiety about losing the people you love.
Malleus's voice lines also do not indicate possessiveness. Yes, there's the usual and expected fanservice-y lines where he invites Yuu to come and engage in various activities with him, but nothing in those suggests he would exclude others or become upset if they also wanted to join. (Are you telling me that Malleus wouldn't want to talk for hours on end about the glory of gargoyles to TWO people instead of just one?????) Additionally, all the characters get similar fanservice-y lines, so it's not something exclusive to Malleus. There was one line that gave me pause: "You always seem to attract a crowd... More so than I'd like, really." Buuut I think this could be read a number of ways, not solely in an ‘I want you all to myself’ way. Malleus actually goes like to be alone, hence his nightly strolls. The line can therefore also be read as Malleus enjoying solitude or one-on-one conversations as opposed to addressing a group. In that case, it's a personal preference and not necessarily a sign of possessiveness. He’s definitely not completely averse to group activities though; there are lines where Malleus invites Yuu to do things with him and other characters. For example, from his PE Uniform: “Sebek has been badgering me to help train him. I'll permit you to join us. ... You're coming, I trust?”
The guy generally doesn't get angry or annoyed if Yuu mentions having other friends or managing the 7 member VDC/SDC group. In fact, he sometimes encourages Yuu to interact with others. One of his birthday lines is, "You needn't linger and focus on me to the exclusion of others. I want everyone to enjoy the party, yourself included." Malleus doesn’t so much as flinch or react when a complete stranger kisses the back of Yuu’s hand either. If he was truly possessive, wouldn’t he have gotten angry or—at the very least—have frowned or tried to put some distance between Yuu and said stranger? Yet Malleus doesn’t really react or comment on it despite being present.
Malleus seems to understand that it's not very polite to demand all of someone's time or attention--and this makes perfect sense of his character. He is a royal, and that means he was taught proper manners. Malleus has even indicated before that his grandmother stressed the importance of observing etiquette, particularly around invitations. You don't just invite yourself to functions or insert yourself into others' lives if not extended said invites... and Malleus, for the most part, adheres to those rules. In various voice lines, he even frets over committing social faux pas, wondering if he has offended his peers with certain behaviors. For example, from his Masquerade Dress: "Flamme shoots me stern looks on occasion. Have I behaved improperly in some way...?"
Malleus is also not generally possessive when it comes to his items or territory. He wants to share cake with others; eating a whole one gave him heartburn and now whole cakes are his least favorite food. Additionally, he tends to welcome people to Diasomnia rather than chase them out or expel them. (After all, they so rarely get visitors in the first place.) Malleus will at least hear out the reasoning for seeking him out. As an example, Leona (someone who has had a rocky history with Malleus) goes to Diasomnia in his Ceremonial Robes vignettes to exchange robes after a laundry mix-up. This is a stark contrast to the highly territorial Leona, who attacks a magicless human in thd Botanical Garden and also allows his own students to wail on Yuu and co. for simply walking being in Savanaclaw. Leona joins in on this bullying too. I think it's pretty clear that Malleus handles guests with far more tact, grace, and patience than his fellow prince.
I want to point out that though Malleus is usually amicable with guests, there are exceptions. Ramshackle, as I mentioned earlier, is a place he enjoys a lot. He indicates in his Halloween Dress card that “If anyone dares to damage [this] dorm, I will be as a lóng and reduce them to cinders. I have become rather fond of that place, after all.” Indeed, he does act on this promise in Terror is Trending and comes close to striking down Magicam Monsters for disrespecting a place he holds so dear. Is this possessive though? Yes, it’s a place he loves—but it’s also a place where his friend Yuu lives.
There are many other examples of Malleus going to extreme lengths to protect the things he loves. He vows to destroy Rollo Flamme, who poses a threat to his people, the fae (who depend on magic as their way of life, and the sentient gargoyles, whom he has recently befriended. He unleashes his mighty magic to attack those who wound his pride. He stops time and kidnaps the entire student body all for the sake of including ghosts in a Halloween celebration. And, of course, he sends Sage’s Island to sleep in a desperate bid to stop losing everyone. The majority of these behaviors involve him lashing out at those who pose legitimate threats to things he cares about. It’s not as though be is acting for no discernible reason or because he is doesn’t want his loved ones being with people other than him. Does that make these actions right? No, absolutely not. But I would say they are definitely more protective than possessive.
Very rarely is Malleus actively preventing his peers from spending time away from him. Sure, he gets upset that he’s not invited to join them and sure, he wishes people would invite him too—but there’s a difference between longing and being mopey about this and acting so domineering he’s breathing down the necks of others to only be with him. He is not stopping people from being with their friends and family. He is not stopping people from using his things or entering his territory. Even when he makes everyone sleep, he grants them the space to craft their own dreams and doesn’t even make the dreams center around him and his own involvement on their lives. Oftentimes the dreams involve several other characters that are important to the individual dreamer and Malleus does not appear at all. (Again, this doesn’t mean using his UM was the best move to resolve his issues; I’m just saying his actions were not necessarily possessive.)
So, in conclusion, I stand by the thesis at I proposed at the start of this post: Malleus is largely protective, not possessive, despite what many fandom interpretations would have you believe.

but yes! im generally a pretty quick reader, and i watch most videos on 2x speed (i listen to audiobooks on 2x speed too and my mom thinks i'm unhinged for it). so since it's all subbed, i'm just breezing through it; if i weren't so attached to listening to the voiced lines, i'd just read the translations on miraheze u__u

—Realising their feelings for you—
characters: Nishinoya, Tsukishima, suga
genre: angst to fluff?
type: headcanon
extras: wrote this cause i was in my angst feels guys, it’s raining what a mood. Anyways i’ve already seen all the requests and it’s gonna come slowly sorry ^^ Also i’m thinking about creating a tag list, if you’re interested please drop a message!
The two of you were close friends
both mature yet childish and stubborn at the same time
you’ve always felt differently with suga
sure he was your go to friend for any of your troubles and you’ve shared secrets with him that it almost felt like he was more of a best friend
but your heart always skipped a beat around him
he was always welcome to physical affection
When the team has movie nights, they would invite their unofficial member, you
during movies, suga would hold your hand or hug your waist loosely while you slept on his chest
which always made your heart flutter and you couldn’t even focus on the movie infront of you
but you’ve always known that Suga never felt the same that you did
He’d always tell you about a girl from this other class
She was pretty, smart, mature, reliable, kind
he would say
you’ve always kept quiet about your feelings, even giving him advice when he consulted you about confessing to her
One morning, suga came up to you. “I finally asked her out” he smiled brightly
your smile dropped and your heart raced
we’re you hearing him correctly
yes, you’ve always known that one day he was going to find someone
even her
but you just
didn’t expect it
“She said yes, Y E S y/n. God i’m so happy” suga exclaimed
his smile was the only thing that kept you from breaking down in class
“i’m happy for you Suga, last long” that was the last sentence you said to him
it’s been a few weeks, close to a month now
you knew avoiding him was...immature
but listening to him ramble about her, was gut wrenching
you saw them a few times, walking down the hallway, in her classroom
Suga tried reaching out to you but never did you meet his eyes once in the past few weeks
but recently your phone has been buzzing more than ever
it’s been irritating you and you’ve hardly touched it after suga started dating her
you sighed once more as another notification was sent in, telling you that you missed someone’s call and that they left you a voice mail
you opened up your phone and your eyes widened at all the messages from Suga
you played his most recent recording
“Hey y/n i know we aren’t exactly talking now...well s-she wasn’t exactly honest. I guess to her using me to make her ex jealous was such a great idea. I-i’m sorry that i’m the reason we haven’t been talking much. Ah, i-i also heard from someone about your—your feelings for me and i know this isn’t the best way to tell you, but i’ve been thinking a lot about it. I missed you these past few weeks. A lot. more than you can ever imagine. I missed your smile, your rambles about the lasted mangas you’ve been reading about, your homemade bentos you shared with me, your laugh, everything. You know what this wasn’t a good idea—i bet you won’t even talk to me after this. I’m sorry for not seeing it before, that the girl i really liked. Was you”
Your eyes widened as your phone slipped from your hand
his voice was shaky and it was obvious that he had been crying but, his message was still clear as day
You ran, all the way to his house
“C-come out” you panted into the call
“Y/n—y/n? wha?” suga said as you heard shuffling in the background
he quickly exited, and met with you
Your hair was messy, you were sweating in your hoodie and pajamas pants but you were still gorgeous, how he had never looked at you clearly before he would never understand
Suga immediately wrapped his arms around you and nuzzled into your shoulder
“I-in your voicemail, is it really true, do you really like me?” you asked him softly, your eyes welling up with tears
Suga looked up from your shoulder and and hugged your cheeks with his palms
“I know, i know it hasn’t been long since i dated her. But please give me a chance, please wait a little longer” he pleaded
You wrapped your arms around his neck, bringing him close
“I will” you whispered
“Kiyoko-senpai, you’re so gorgeous as usual” Nishinoya exclaimed along with Tanaka, both following her around like a puppy
You bit your lip, looking down at your sketchbook instead to distract yourself from the pain
Harbouring feelings for the second year libero hasn’t been easy
Constantly hearing him compliment other girls, comparing yourself, new insecurities
you didn’t understand why you liked him to be very honest
but you were also lying to yourself
His energy, his comfortable vibe, his smile and his eyes made you fall head over heels with Nishinoya
“Y/n-chan, what’re you drawing today?” he shouted, coming up to you
“i’m not sure yet Noya-kun” The two of you were best friends since you two were young
He defended you against middle school bullies and the two of you have been inseparable ever since
You realised your feelings for him after coming into High school
which was when his crush for your senpai began
You had nothing against Kiyoko-senpai, she actually gave you some advice and helped you several times with your homework
but, it wasn’t nice hearing him compliment her, as selfish as it sounded, you wanted on of his compliments to be directed to you
After training, You and Nishinoya walked back home together since the two of you lived near each other
“Yuu?” you asked him as he hummed in reply
Your heart pounded, “c-can i tell you something”
it was now or never you thought.
He nodded and focused on what you were going to say, “I liked you since we entered high school”
Nishinoya’s eyes widened and he stopped in his tracks
you looked down, twiddling with your fingers
“i know you like Kiyoko-senpai, but it was something i just had to tell you because i didn’t want to risk our friendship.” you flashed a fake smile to him
“don’t worry, i never expected you to return my feelings. this won’t change anything, i promise. So, you can still continue to like senpai” you mumbled, feeling the tears pooling at your eyes
The whole time, Nishinoya didn’t say anything
his mouth was agape but he just couldn’t find the right words
you sighed, and walked away not before saying, “Have a nice holiday noya-kun” flashing him a fake smile
he could see your tears and he noticed your smile that was different
Nishinoya stood there, thinking about what you just said.
he closed his eyes and the memory of your tear stained face filled him with guilt
he knew he couldn’t return your feelings but, why did he feel so sad when you said “nothing is going to change”
The break wasn’t very, enjoyable
you worked different part time jobs while Nishinoya attended trainings
the amount of times he let the ball from the opposite team his the ground was uncountable
he could barely focus and he just stared as the ball hit the ground for the tenth time
everyone groaned, noticing how their libero wasn’t paying attention
he had even stopped giving out compliments to the beautiful manager during that time
the only thing on his mind was you
training ended early that day, as they wrapped up and Nishinoya apologised for not doing well
you blew out a breath of smoke as you stared at the christmas tree infront of you
It was huge and reminded you of the joyous occasion that was arriving
Usually, you and Nishinoya would be playing at the park, having snowball fights, making angels and snowmans, and falling sick together later on
You haven’t spoken to him since that day, because of your busy schedule and his trainings
You hid your hands in your pocket, noticing how cold it was
“Y/n” a familiar voice called out to you
You turned around to widen your eyes at the sight of Nishinoya slightly panting and in his training clothes
“N-noya? What’re you doing here, aren’t you cold?” he shook his head
taking out his gloves and reaching for your hand
“You always forget your gloves don’t you, ever since middle school” he slightly laughed at the memories
“i don’t like them, they aren’t comfy” you pouted and looked away
Nishinoya held your hands, “Y/n” you looked back at him
“it hasn’t been the same. Now everyday has been boring, distracting because i keep thinking about you.” he said
“i know i’ve always expressed my ‘love’ for Kiyoko-senpai, but the person that i really love is you” your eyes widen yet again. You shook your head
“No Noya, she’s perfect, good grades, the best looks, reliable, mature, kind? Why would you like me when you have her” you said sadly
“Kind, loyal, fierce, immature, stubborn, adorable, caring, beautiful, intelligent” he began listing
“Y/n, i love you and not because you’re perfect, you have qualities that make you, you. Qualities that i love about you. Most importantly, you’re you. The girl i had a crush on since middle school, since you offered me that star wars bandage after i defended you. I’m sorry for not realising it sooner, but please, let me make it up to you” Nishinoya said
his showed his desperation and his voice expressed his love for you
“of course, and i love you too yuu”
You were always by his side
you’d greet him good morning at the lockers and even sent him home
Tsukishima hated it
he found you annoying
like a leech he can’t get rid of no matter what
you didn’t know how exactly did you fall deeply for the cold beanpole but you certainly liked him a lot
from his honey blonde hair, his taste in music, his intelligence, sassy comments and precious rare smiles
you’ve always tried to get him to notice you, making him bentos, reaching school early to greet him and even following him home after his trainings
one day
“Tsukki, i like you, would you please go out with me?” you confessed to him. Your blush could not get any redder as you bowed
Tsukishima scoffed
“with you? seriously?” your hopes fell as you stood up but looked away
“i would rather date the king rather than you. You’re annoying and if i could get rid of you, i would’ve done it earlier” he spit out
each word stabbing you deep in the heart
he turned around and left
you glanced at the macarons you made for him and the letter that you had written
they were all dinosaur themed, hoping to gain more of his attention
You were crying by then
he really thought you were nothing but someone annoying
From that day on, you hardly spoke to him
Everyday tsukishima would turn up expecting to see your face again, but you were no where to be found
in the beginning, he was satisfied, realising he was able to chase you away. But slowly, he realised how disappointed he felt when he didn’t hear you greeting him and the sight of your adorable smile adorning your face
he realised he finally chased you away
now he walks home alone, whenever he turns around unconsciously you weren’t there, he could only feel your presence in his memories
“Tsukki wait for me!”
“Good morning Tsukki, i made you some cookies today”
Tsukishima sighed as he packed up his books, he was too lazy to buy his food at the cafeteria and you didn’t prepare anything for him so he could only starve till school was over
“Tsukki i heard some boy asked Y/n out” this gained Tsukishima’s attention as Yamaguchi returned from the vending machine with drinks
“i was buying the drinks when i overheard them” yamaguchi said
tsukishima didn’t do anything except for opening his drink
“tsukki you should talk to Y/n” yamaguchi advised. “She hasn’t been herself lately and the whole class feels it too”
Tsukishima took a sip of his drink
“Tsukki, are you okay with some other guy taking care of her?” Yamaguchi questioned him
that was what made tsukishima put down his drink
jealousy was all he felt
he didn’t like the thought of someone else making you smile, making you laugh. What if you left forever? for another guy?
Tsukishima immediately left to find you and dragged you away from the guy
“what are yo-?” you exclaimed as tsukishima slammed you against the lockers and placing his hand next to the locker beside you
“i take it back” he said
You were confused, “i missed you, i realised my true feelings when i didn’t have you. I need you, please give me a chance. i like you Y/n” he says
you smiled as you hesitantly wrapped your arms around him
“One chance”

Author’s Note: I’ve no idea how real theaters work, so anything that may be off with the timeline or proper procedure or whatever, I’ll just have to excuse as author ignorance, or handwave away by this theater being different, in many ways. That said, thank you lonelypond for fielding the questions I’ve sent thus far.
----------
“Ayumu!” A voice called from a few rows up. “Up here! Up here!”
“Yuu-chan?” Ayumu had to consciously keep her own volume down due to her surprise on seeing her girlfriend. “Shhh!” She added, holding a finger to her lips.
Yuu simply chuckled in response as Ayumu moved up the aisle. Well, it wasn’t like the twin-tailed girl was being any louder than the blonde sitting nearby. Ohara, was it? The theater’s patron, or one of them at least.
“I saved you a seat.” Yuu said with a grin as Ayumu reached her.
“Thank you.” Ayumu replied as she sat.
She was pretty sure they both knew the gesture was unnecessary as there were literally hundreds of empty seats, but it was the thought that counted. Ayumu loved that part of Yuu, always seeking little ways to make her feel special, even simple and unnecessary ones.
As for why the seats were empty, it was because this was merely an audition session. The only people in the theater today were cast and crew. And the cast were all up on stage, ready to make their bids for their potential roles. Well, all but the two leads, Yazawa and Nishikino, as they had been brought in specifically for their star power and were also sitting in the house with most of the crew.
Also, not everyone present was theater staff. There was of course, Ohara, the patron, and her driver, Matsuura. And there were the two from the catering company that had brought lunch earlier, Honoka and Rin, who insisted Ayumu refer to them by their given names when she spoke with them during the meal. She wasn’t quite sure why they were still around as they had finished cleaned up a little while back.
“I didn’t expect to see you here, Yuu-chan.” Ayumu whispered as Dia and Umi prepped the future cast for their auditions. “How did you even get in?”
“I told ‘em I was Ayumu’s girlfriend.” Yuu shrugged. “And they obviously figured out what I am, which probably helped. Although speaking of that…” She glanced around quickly, sticking out her tongue a couple times. “I’m pretty sure everyone here is like us. I don’t remember them advertising that they were only hiring monsters, but… oh sorry, supernatural beings.” She corrected.
Ayumu let her grimace relax. She had never liked the term monster as seemed to carry more negative connotations than other similar terms. And while Yuu was usually careful to avoid using the word, so many of their fellow cryptids used it that Ayumu couldn’t really fault her girlfriend for accidentally using it as well from time to time. Of course, that still didn’t mean she had to like it.
“But I don’t think there’s a single full blood human here.” Yuu continued. “And man, what a mix.” She flicked out her tongue again. “I’m getting a bit of everything. There’s gotta be a werewolf among them. And someone with feathers. At least one undead. I’m getting a bit of sea salt, so there’s probably a mermaid or the like. Sulfur, brimstone, so maybe a demon, or other fire creature I suppose, maybe both. And…” her brow furrowed, and she held her tongue out for longer than usual “that’s odd…”
“What’s odd?” Ayumu pressed.
“I don’t know. There’s something… else… here.” She shook her head. “I’ve never smelled anything like it. Heat. Flame. But not like any I’ve ever known… It’s otherworldly, and yet, not unpleasantly so. Huh…”
“Oh, I think they’re starting.”
“Right.” Yuu turned her attention to the stage where a young woman with long brown hair with some tied in a bright red ribbon was about to begin.
If Ayumu remembered right, the young woman’s name was Osaka Shizuku and had graduated alongside Nishikino Maki from Waseda, a prestigious school known for its arts degrees. For her audition, she had chosen to recite and act out a dramatic monologue in English. Ayumu felt like she had heard the lines before, though not on stage. Perhaps a movie? In any case, Shizuku left little doubt as to her skill and training, leaving Ayumu rightfully impressed.
Next up was… Nakasu Kasumi? Ayumu knew she had seen that face before. The young woman had appeared in a handful of television commercials, usually cute things aimed at a certain female demographic. Ayumu had actually purchased a few items promoted by Kasumi. As such, it came as little surprise that Kasumi’s audition resembled one of those cute commercials.
The next few auditions were a bit of a blur for Ayumu. It didn’t help that she was far less familiar with their names and faces.
But then, she stepped onto the stage. A short, raven haired young woman with an aura Ayumu could only describe as passionate. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Yuu sit up straighter as she seemed to sense something about this girl. Like the previous several others, Ayumu wasn’t familiar with this one, but something about her held her attention.
“Yuki Setsuna, was it?” Umi read from her list.
“Yes.” Setsuna confirmed.
“And what do you have for us today?”
“Well, I read the script and really enjoyed one character, so I would like to recite a few of her lines.”
“You’ve already memorized lines from the script?”
“Yes.”
“The script you were just given earlier today?”
“Yes. It was just so~ good. I couldn’t put it down.” Setsuna seemed to be actively holding back her excitement.
“Impressive.”
In a nearby seat, an orange-haired girl bounced a little, seemingly excited by the admission. Perhaps she was the one who had written the script?
“Oh, I may have also added a few lines.” Setsuna admitted. “I believe they fit the character.”
Umi gave a glance toward the orange-haired girl behind her who nodded enthusiastically.
“Very well.” Umi turned back toward the stage. “Carry on.”
Setsuna closed her eyes and took a deep breath before releasing it slowly. When she opened her eyes again, her entire demeanor had changed from restrained excitement to a fiery passion. Even from several rows up, Ayumu felt she could see flames in the young woman’s eyes.
Suddenly, Setsuna struck a dramatic pose. “At last, I have found you, foul beasts!” She practically shouted, pointing to somewhere else on stage.
Ayumu jumped a little in her seat, having not expected the outburst. She heard Yuu giggle quietly beside her.
“It is I, Artemisia Ullrin! Hunter of Horrors by trade and Collector of Cryptids by hobby.” She held her hand to her chest as the belted the lines proudly. “By order of Lady Lycaonian, I am to exterminate the infestation of werebeats suffered by her lands. You are welcome to resist, though I assure you that you shall lose. However!” Setsuna emphasized her lines with exaggerated gestures. “I offer an alternative! Surrender and be added to my collection.”
As melodramatic as the performance was, Ayumu couldn’t deny that it was quite entertaining. She watched in amusement as Setsuna skipped ahead to what she assumed to be a battle scene where she called out attacks like a cheesy hero show for kids. She knew the production was intended to be a little tongue in cheek, but Setsuna seemed intent on not just chewing, but flat out consuming the scenery, happily.
And then, seemingly all too soon, it was over.
“Bravi! Bravi!” Mari cheered, loudly, as she stood up from her seat. “Bravissimi!”
The orange-haired girl joined in standing as well, clapping and laughing. Then Yuu stood, as well several others.
“Thank you, everyone.” Setsuna bowed before standing back up with a beaming smile.
“<Where in the world have you been hiding,> Secchan?” Mari exclaimed in English
“Se-Secchan?” Setsuna blinked.
“Really, you were perfect!” The script writer added. “I love the new lines! I’ll be sure to add them!”
“It would appear you’ve earned a few fans.” Dia spoke next, fairly coolly and calmly, though Ayumu was certain she detected a touch of amusement in her tone. “That will undoubtedly play in your favor when we make our final casting decisions.”
“Thank you.” Setsuna bowed again before moving off stage to allow the next audition to proceed.
“Alright, next we have…”
Whatever else Umi was saying was lost to Ayumu as hands grabbed her shoulders.
“That was amazing!” Yuu did he best to keep her volume down. “That really got my heart racing! Actors are amazing! Theater is amazing! Ooo… I want to meet Setsuna-chan in person now!”
“-chan?!” Ayumu balked.
“I can’t wait to see the production!” Yuu continued as though she hadn’t heard Ayumu. “How long did you say it would take?”
“Well, it’s a musical, so that apparently adds more time.” Ayumu recalled. “I think I remember either Umi or Dia saying they were slotting for twelve weeks before opening night.”
“Twelve weeks?” Yuu visibly deflated a bit. “That’s like three whole months! I don’t think I can wait that long…”
Ayumu chuckled at her girlfriend’s newfound obsession. She’d seen this dozens of times before as Yuu would latch onto and hyper-focus on some new hobby or interest. “Maybe we can find some old clips of plays performed by the other Sonoda or Kurosawa theaters?”
“That’s a great idea, Ayumu!” Yuu’s eyes sparkled like emeralds. “Let’s do that tonight.”
“Alright.” Ayumu nodded in agreement.
Satisfied, Yuu settled back into her seat to watch the ongoing audition.
For her own part, Ayumu found her thoughts drifting. Artemisia? Ullrin? Lady Lycaonian? Mythology was not her strong suit, but it sounded like that wasn’t the case with the script writer either. It was almost as if she had simply Googled something about werewolves and just went with the first result that came up. Also, wasn’t Artemis already a woman? Did her name really need an -ia at the end to make the character female?
Well, the showrunners seemed fine with the ideas and the script writer and at least one of the actors were excited about them. So, who was Ayumu to judge? It wasn’t as if she herself hadn’t been entertained by Setsuna’s performance.
Setsuna… -chan… Ayumu glanced at her girlfriend. She had seen Yuu fawn over fictional woman before, but this was a first time she remembered her doing so over a living, breathing woman. And for some reason, that bothered her. Was she jealous? Ayumu shook her head to clear it of such thoughts. She was probably overthinking things and being insecure. She and Yuu had been happily dating for several years now. She shouldn’t be worrying about losing her at this point… right?
----------
“Yuu-chan, wait!” Ayumu protested as her girlfriend pulled her through a door clearly marked Employees Only. “We… I mean, you shouldn’t…”
“I just want to meet Setsuna-chan and thank her for the wonderful performance.” Yuu responded, not letting up her pace.
They rounded a corner and…
“Takasaki Yuu-san.” Dia stated solemnly as she stood in the center of the hallway.
“Oh, hi!” Yuu responded cheerfully. “You’re one of the women I met at the front door and decided to let me in. Dia-san, right?”
Dia blinked, obviously not expecting Yuu to skip a level of formality. But Yuu had been like that for the entire time Ayumu had known her. Still, Ayumu winced as she wondered how much trouble they were now in.
“Yes…” Dia confirmed.
“Right. Thank you again for letting me watch the auditions today.” Yuu continued. “They were amazing! My heart was racing pretty much the entire time. Especially with Setsuna-chan’s.”
There she goes again with -chan…
“Yuki-san did indeed give us quite the performance.” Dia agreed. “Anyway, as I was about to say, Takasaki-san, you are not employed here.”
“Nope. Not yet.” Yuu grinned.
“Not yet?” Dia raised an eyebrow.
“This whole experience has been so inspiring that I want to apply to work here.”
Ayumu also raised an eyebrow. That was news to her.
“You wish to become an actor?” Dia inquired.
Yuu shook her head. “No, I don’t really want to be on stage; I’d rather watch from the audience. But I can’t help wanting to support the amazing members of your cast in whatever way I can.”
“I see.”
“I could haul supplies around.” Yuu suggested. “Oh, I’m pretty good with my hands.” She held them out for emphasis. “So maybe I could help assemble sets or props? Ayumu has taught me a thing or two about hair and makeup, so I could definitely help her. Oh, and I worked a while as an editor for my college newspaper, so maybe I could go over the script and help there? And I did some composing for the band and orchestras, and even learned to play a couple instruments, like the piano, so I could help in the pit as well.”
Dia nodded. “I think I am starting to understand. You are essentially a jack of all trades.”
“Master of none.” Yuu confirmed.
“But better than a master of one.” Dia completed.
“Right. I’m no specialist, but I’m pretty good at picking up the basics.”
“Yuu-chan is a fast learner.” Ayumu added.
“I see.” Dia nodded. “Then I would suggest you get a resume in order and send it our way. Uehara-san should have the contact information.”
“Oh, I have that already. I was actually the one who found this place and recommended that Ayumu apply. I probably would have applied as well at that time, but I had a job then.” Yuu shrugged. “But they decided they needed to cut costs, and as I was the most recently hired, I ended up being part of that cost.”
“Well, I admire your enthusiasm and desire to help my cast and crew.” Dia smiled. “I shall look forward to working with you soon. Now, if you will excuse me, there are matters to which I must attend elsewhere.” That said, she stepped past the couple and moved down the hall.
Ayumu released a breath she hadn’t realized she had been holding. So… Dia wasn’t kicking them out after all? She wasn’t in trouble for letting a non-employee into this area?
“C’mon!” Yuu said, grabbing her hand again and shattering her thoughts. “We still gotta find Setsuna-chan. Say, do you know where her dressing room is?”
“I, uhm… know some of the rooms are off to the right.” Ayumu motioned in that direction. “Though I’m not sure if she has one assigned to her yet.”
“Well, let’s go see.”
“Uhm… alright…” Again, Ayumu was pulled down the hall.
The couple turned another corner, moved past the rooms for Yazawa and Nishikino, another without a name plate and… huh…
“She has one.” Yuu said, stopping in front of a room. “They must have just given it to her.” She indicated the paper sign taped over where the a more permanent placard would be placed. “Maybe she already got the part she wanted?”
Ayumu shrugged. She didn’t know enough about the overall process to comment.
“Setsuna-chan!” Yuu called as she knocked. “Are you in there?”
“Yes,” the young actress replied from within “you can come in.”
Yuu opened the door and stepped in.
“Uehara-san?” Setsuna turned away from whatever she was setting up on the vanity. “And… uhm…?”
“Yuu.” The twintailed girl responded. “Takasaki Yuu. I’m Ayumu’s girlfriend and they let me watch the auditions with her.”
“Ah…”
“So, you’re the source.”
“Eh?”
Yuu flicked her tongue. “Of the scent I smelled earlier.”
“Sc-scent?” Pink dusted Setsuna’s cheeks.
“Flame. Fire.” Yuu stepped closer and leaned in toward the young actress. “But not the kind I am used to… Just what are you, Setsuna-chan?”
“Yuu-chan!” Ayumu scolded, moving forward to pull her girlfriend away from Setsuna who was starting to display some defensive body language. “You shouldn’t just ask such things so bluntly.”
“Mm? Why not?” Yuu seemed confused. “I think it’s pretty obvious now that Dia-san and Umi-san intended to create a sort of haven for us here. And if we’re all going to work together, it makes sense to know what we all are.”
“Yeah, but…”
“Anyway, I’m a lamia.” Yuu indicated herself. “I’d show you, but I wore pants today.”
Well, at least she has the decency to not unceremoniously drop trou in front of someone she just met. Ayumu thought to herself. Like she so often does at home…
“But I can do this.”
Eh? Ayumu felt her cheek being pinched.
“There. As you can see, Ayumu is a moon rabbit.”
Eh? Eh?! Ayumu caught her reflection in the mirror near Setsuna. Sure enough, white, fluffy rabbit ears had sprouted on her head.
“Mohhh… Yuu-chan!” Ayumu punched her girlfriend lightly in the arm.
“What?” Yuu giggled at the playful jab. “Ayumu always looks so cute like that. I can’t help wanting to see you like that more.”
“Mmph…” Ayumu puffed her cheeks out to pout, though she couldn’t deny liking the compliment.
“They are indeed quite cute, Uehara-san.” Setsuna agreed with an amused smile.
“Oh, uhm… thank you.” Ayumu replied. “And, Ayumu is fine. Like Yuu-chan said, we’ll be working together a lot, so I don’t mind being a bit less formal.”
Setsuna’s smile grew. “I’d like that. Please feel free to call me Setsuna in return. Oh, and if you don’t mind my asking, by moon rabbit, do you mean…?”
“Well, I wasn’t actually born on the moon, if that’s what you mean.” Ayumu explained. “My ancestors were though.”
Setsuna nodded in understanding.
“But you should try her mochi, though.” Yuu spoke up. “It’s the best. Same with her rice cakes.”
Setsuna seemed to recall something. “I think you’ll find a good friend in Koizumi-san.”
“Oh yeah,” Yuu thought out loud “Ayumu, wasn’t she the one you said they brought a huge container of rice for?”
Ayumu nodded in confirmation. “I was honesty surprised how much she was able to eat, though she wasn’t the only one.”
“I suppose some of us have larger forms to feed.” Yuu shrugged. “Anyway, I gotta know the source of that fiery smell.” She turned her attention back to Setsuna. “You know what we are now, so what kind are you? Why is your fire so different than that of an ifrit, salamander, phoenix, dragon or whatever?”
“Oh, uhm…” Setsuna fidgeted a bit. “I’m a Cthughan.”
Yuu furrowed her brow in thought for a moment before something came to her and she looked up excitedly. “You mean you’re the Elder God, Cthugha?”
Setsuna shook her head. “Great Old One, actually. And I’m only a descendant of him. Cthugha is my great great great… I actually don’t know how many greats, grandfather.”
Oh, kind of like me being a descendant of rabbits who actually lived on the moon way back when. Ayumu thought.
“That’s. So. Cool!” Yuu practically squealed. “No wonder I couldn’t identify it, I’ve never met an Elder God before.”
“Great Old One.” Setsuna corrected again.
“Right, sorry. Anyway, that wasn’t actually the reason I wanted to meet you today.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah, I actually wanted to tell you how amazing you were in your audition and that I really hope you get the part.”
“Thank you. And they did actually already give me the role.” Setsuna said. “That’s why I’ve been setting up my stuff here.”
“I was right.” Yuu tossed over to Ayumu. “Congratulations, Setsuna-chan!” She offered the actress.
“Thank you again.” Setsuna smiled. “I really like the part.”
“It looked like it was a lot of fun to play.”
“I know right?” Ayumu detected some of the excitement Setsuna displayed before her audition.
“I haven’t read the script yet, but…
“It’s so~ good!” Setsuna seemed less able, or perhaps less willing to suppress her excitement. “I was able to talk with Chika-san, who wrote the script, and she was able to tell me a ton of things about what she had planned for possible modifications, depending on who got what parts and, oh my gosh, it all sounds amazing, and I think they already know who to cast for the main villain and while I didn’t expect that choice, Chika-san’s explanation was awesome as she revealed her plans to me and what she has planned for Yazawa-san and Nishikino-san’s characters, oh it sounds like so much fun and…” Setsuna suddenly recoiled and stepped back. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to go off like that…”
Yuu laughed. “It’s fine, it’s fine.” She dismissed. “Your excitement makes me want to see if I can track down this Chika-san and get a copy for myself.”
“You can have one of mine!” Setsuna pounced at offering.
“One of…?” Yuu asked, picking up on the word choice.
“Oh, uhm… I may have made a couple copies for myself to write ideas on after Chika-san said she would like to see what I think.” Setsuna admitted as she shuffled through a stack of papers. She started to hold out a set before pulling them back. “Wait, you don’t work here though.”
“Not yet.” Yuu admitted. “But your audition, and many of the others, inspired me to apply here so I could support the amazing actors here however I could.”
“Ah.” Setsuna nodded, holding out the papers, only to pull them back yet again. “You’re not a spy from that other theater down the street, are you?”
Yuu chuckled. “If that was the case, I’d just get my info from Ayumu.”
“Right, that makes sense.” Finally the actress gave the script to Yuu.
“I already offered to Dia-san that I could help with editing.” Yuu skimmed it excitedly. “I wonder if Chika-san would mind if I slipped in a few ideas of my own.”
“She seems pretty willing to accept ideas from others around the theater.” Setsuna said. “Both Osaka-san and Nakasu-san have offered some of their thoughts already.”
Yuu opened her mouth, but whatever she was about to say next was interrupted by her stomach growling. She giggled. “I guess it is getting a little late.”
“Let’s head home then.” Ayumu spoke up. “I’ll make dinner for us. It was nice meeting you, Setsuna-san.”
“I don’t think I can make it all the way home.” Yuu said. “Why don’t we stop at that sandwich shop along the way.”
“Alright.” Ayumu agreed.
“Wanna come with us, Setsuna-chan?”
“Eh? Me?” Setsuna seemed caught off guard by the invite.
“Yeah, that way we can talk about the script and stuff.”
“Oh, uhm, thank you, but I wouldn’t want to impose. Besides there’s still a couple things I want to do here before I head out.”
“Alright. Maybe some other time then.” With that, Yuu took Ayumu’s hand and headed for the door. “See you later, Setsuna-chan!” She called as she exited.
At first Ayumu felt relief that Setsuna had declined, but as she and Yuu walked down the hall, a sense of disappointment set it. She actually did want to talk about the upcoming play. Perhaps next time…
----------
“Ne, Yuu-chan.” Ayumu said as the couple walked home.
“Mm?”
“Would you… uhm… Would you support me if I decided to become an actress?” The way you say you want to support Setsuna-san and the others?
“Of course!” Yuu gave her a toothy grin. “I think Ayumu would be an amazing actor.”
“Really?”
Yuu chuckled. “Well yeah, the Ayumu I know and love may be shy sometimes and hesitant to try new things. But when she decides to do something, she’s the hardest worker I know. She always gives it her best. That’s one of my favorite aspects of Ayumu.”
Ayumu blushed at Yuu’s affirmations.
“So, what prompted this all of a sudden?” Yuu looked at Ayumu with sudden curiosity. “Did the auditions inspire you as well?”
“A little…” Ayumu admitted. Did she need to include her desire for Yuu to look at her the way she looked at Setsuna?
Yuu smiled. “Well, maybe tonight we should look into finding some acting classes for you to take.”
“Classes?”
“Well, I don’t know anything about acting, so I’d be no help to you there.” Yuu explained. “Though I’d be happy to help you rehearse lines or whatever. And you’ll want some knowledge before you start auditioning for roles, right? Surely there has to be some evening or night course you can take somewhere.”
“Alright.”
Yuu’s expression became whimsical. “Mm… I can imagine it now. Uehara Ayumu stars in… something something big show, the marquee proudly proclaims with flashing lights. Ayumu on stage bowing before a standing ovation. Flowers are tossed on stage by devoted fans.”
“Y-Yuu-chan…” Ayumu murmured a quiet protest.
“What? I can’t imagine my amazing girlfriend being adored by all?”
“Well… I don’t really need to be the star, do I?”
Yuu shrugged. “Even if you only want supporting roles, I’ll still happily come watch your performances.”
Ayumu smiled. She loved this side of Yuu, her unwavering and unconditional support, always willing to adapt to anything Ayumu wanted to do. It was a constant source of confidence from which she drew to take on those new things, when she did.
Maybe she was overthinking the thing with Setsuna. Yuu was just being Yuu, getting excited over a new obsession, and Setsuna’s performance just happened to be the gateway into that obsession. As for Setsuna herself, she seemed equally excited about acting as Yuu, if not more so. And as her audition proved, she had talent. Perhaps Ayumu could learn a thing or two from her through observation, or just talking with her.
“Alright.” She set her mind on her decision. “Let’s look into classes when we get home.”

My Review of Love Live Nijigasaki School Idol Club
AAAAAAAAAAAAH!
I’M BACK IN IDOL HELL!
Another damn Love Live! Seriously? Another damn one!?
Actually, I knew this was going to happen from like almost two years ago. Back when I was an active player with the rhythm game app LLSIF, we’d get these special characters popping in every now and then, usually as SSR, SR, or N scouts. Then in 2019, they put out singles for each girl to play and I knew then and there that a new Love Live was already in the works and were going to feature these girls.
THIS STORY: First of all, the characters of this story are not becoming idols because the school is in danger of closing down. I know that was like a big thing in the original Love Live and in Sunshine, but that’s not the case this time. This school looks very well populated and well-established. So let’s just squash that trope.
Ayumu and Yuu got bit by the idol bug leaving school one day when they came across a solo performance out in the open. The girl performing is named Setsuna Yuki and she’s part of the Idol Club at Nijigasaki (the school Ayumu and Yuu attend). The next day, they learned from the student council that the club has been disbanded at the request of Setsuna. So what do Ayumu and Yuu do now? They’re going to try and revive it!
But what about the girl who started the idol club in the first place, Setsuna?! The reason for Setsuna disbanding the club was because she felt that she and the rest of the girls in the group were on a different wavelength. So she decided to disban the club, leaving the other girls, Emma, Kanata, Shizuku, and Kasumi to go their separate ways. But that wasn’t the only thing on Setsuna’s plate. Setsuna kinda lives a double life on campus. She’s Setsuna in the school idol club, but she’s also the student council president, Nana. So Ayumu, Yuu, and Setsuna end up reviving the idol club. Emma, Kasumi, Shizuku, and Kanata end up joining again. And eventually, we get other members Ai, Rina, and Karin to join in. And since there’s quite a long list of characters, let’s talk about them.
Ayumu is one of the first girls to revive the idol club. Unlike the main girls from the other series like Honoka and Chika, she’s not as crazy-energetic and idol-crazy. She’s more of the lover of cute things. She was sparked by idols when she saw Setsuna perform.
Speaking of cute things, Kasumi is the idol-loving crazy girl that loves all things cute and wants all of her performances to be cute.
Emma is the first Love Live character originally from a place that’s not Japan. This Swiss-miss came to Japan to become an idol.
Setsuna lives the double life. At school, she’s the disciplinarian student council president, Nana. But when she’s in idol form, she’s Setsuna Yuki ready to shine on stage.
Shizuku got interested in becoming an idol to help with her acting aspirations.
Rina got curious and ended up joining the idol club despite having problems showcasing her emotions. That’s why you see the computerized monitor on her face.
Ai joined alongside with Rina and with her Sporty Spice persona, she’ll get the club on their feet.
Karin is already well-established in the modeling world, but ended up getting into the idol world after hanging with Emma.
Kanata…likes to sleep. Oh, and she has a younger sister in an idol group at her school.
Then there’s Yuu! She isn’t the kind of idol member that sings and performs like the other girls, but works to support each girl in their goals.
Oh and all of these idols are SOLO ARTISTS!
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: As usual with the Love Live franchise (and most other idol animes), these voice actors are brand-spankin’ new. These girls are usually only known for their work as actual idols and only a few of them really go on to do a full-length voice actor career. Then I get, SURPRISE! Akari Kitou is in this too! This girl was in EVERYTHING these past two years! Everything! Every-damn-thing! Now she’s a Love Live waifu! Actually, several of the seiyuus here I’ve seen in a few things here and there and that’s pretty rare since I’m not hip to all the idol groups in Japan.
Now for the dub, because we all know FUNimation! Yeah, they licensed this just like the previous Love Live series. However, they really kept this series all to themselves where not even Hulu could air it. At the moment, no dub has been announced or planned. I’m assuming it’ll happen one day. I only say this because of all the other Love Live series. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
*Ayumu is played by Aguri Oonishi
*Setsuna is played by Tomori Kusunoki (known for LLENN on SAO: Gun Gale Online)
*Kasumi is played by Mayu Sagara
*Ai is played by Natsumi Murakami
*Emma is played by Maria Sashide
*Rina is played by Chiemi Tanaka (known for Ririko on Sakura Quest)
*Kanata is played by Akari Kitou (known for Nezuko on Demon Slayer, Yashiro on Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, Iwanaga on In/Spectre, Tsukasa on Tonikawa, Aru on Hitoribocchi, and Kaho on Blend-S)
*Shizuku is played by Kaori Maeda (known for Selka on SAO: Alicization)
*Karin is played by Miyu Kubota (known for Sister Lily on Black Clover)
*Yuu is played by Hinaki Yano
NEW BEST GIRL: As you may know, I have picked my favorite girls from the Love Live fandom. Nozomi is best girl in the original and when it comes to Sunshine, Ruby is tops!
When I saw the new girls back when the app LLSIF released all the single songs for the Nijigasaki club, I was curious about one particular girl. I had a feeling Rina was going to be a special kind of interesting. Why was she wearing a special mask on stage? Is she an introvert who hates to be seen up-close? I had to learn more about her! Turns out Rina had a lot of trouble expressing her feelings. When she’s excited, sad, irritated, or satisfied, it’s just the same expression. I love Rina. She’s my precious cinnamon roll and if anyone talks smack about her is gonna get a bop in the face.
ABOUT YUU: I know what you’re thinking, what the hell is going on with Love Live giving us 10 girls instead of 9? And I would agree! LLSIF game gave us 9 solo albums and Yuu is not among any of them. But then I recently downloaded LLSIF All Stars and discovered the interactive portion with all of the girls and how your character is the unspoken 10th member of the group. Yeah, Yuu is pretty much that character.
SHIPPING: In the original series, I was a bit of a multi-shipper that was open to any hookups if I can see it. When Sunshine came along, I was still a multi-shipper, but heavily Kanan x Mari to a point where I’m imagining their wedding. This time around…yeah, once again I found myself shipping the fuck out of third-years.
This is Karin x Emma. I support the fuck out of this. Never forget that!
And while I’m at it, let’s add Ai x Rina. Ai was literally Rina’s first friend. She will go anywhere for this girl and do anything for her.
I should probably add Ayumu x Yuu too. But then again, this is Love Live. No matter what ship we all choose, it’s all for naught as no one really confesses their feelings for each other. Right?
Hahaha…Foreshadowing!
THE SAME, BUT…: Yeah, you know how this goes. Since this is an idol anime and the third one from the same franchise, I’m gonna squawk about the similarities this series has with the first two Love Lives. Yes, we’ve got the cutesy, annoying idol with Kasumi. Yes, we have the token class president with Setsuna. Yes, the animation for all the dance scenes is wonky CGI. And yes, we have a center second year with a red-ish hue to her hair with Ayumu. But there’s just so many glaring differences compared to the other two series.
*First of all, the school is not in any danger of closing down. The original Love Live had Honoka and her friends starting a school idol club to drum up attention for their school so it wouldn’t have to shut down. Love Live Sunshine also had that with sadder outcomes for the school. This school is huge, has many different clubs and activities. This school is safe! But if they pull some shit out in season two saying it has to close down, I call bullshit.
*Nijigasaki High School Idol Club mostly has solos. One of the reasons for the falling out at the beginning between Setsuna, Kasumi, Emma, Kanata, and Shizuku was differences. Every girl has their own thing and they respect that. Even in the app, there are a lot of solo songs and only a few where two or more of the girls are singing together.
*Add to that, this group doesn’t really have a “group name”. I mean Nijigasaki School Idol Club doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue like μ's or Aqours.
*The big, scary student council president is a second year. Unlike Eli and Dia from the previous series, Setsuna (a second year student) is really the scary one with power. But much like Dia, she does have a passion for idols. It’s just that Setsuna goes above and beyond to hide that along with her true self. I bring this up because when the second season comes (AND IT WILL), I have a feeling they’ll introduce this one character that’s in the game and that’s going to be quite the game changer.
FAVORITE SONG: Chase by Setsuna.
I think all of us were blown away by that song in episode one.
ENDING: After Diver Fes and Karin’s solo performance, the girls decide to hold a training camp at their school. During the camp, Yuu was still awe-struck by everyone’s dedication to the club and the performances in the previous episode. And by the end of the camp, Yuu says there should be a school idol festival to show everyone that school idols are awesome. Much to my dismay, I doubt that this anime will follow the game route and have μ's and Aqours perform. Actually, the groups seen throughout the series are characters I would run across in one of the other Love Live apps, including Kanata’s little sister. Moving on!
Everything was going along swimmingly with this School Idol Festival. The student council (or Setsuna as her alter ego Nana) agreed to it, the students of Nijigasaki are excited for what’s to come, and other schools including Kanata’s sister Haruka’s school are willing to participate. However, the big friction that sparked came from Ayumu. As we all know, she and Yuu are close as can be. Ever since the resurrection of the School Idol Club, Yuu has been there to realize the dreams of everyone. Ayumu got jealous, especially seeing Yuu with Setsuna. So she corners her and wants Yuu all to herself and…
Whoa. Confirmed lesbianism!
Let’s just say Ayumu’s jealousy came and went as she realized she can’t stop Yuu’s dreams and that Ayumu’s gonna have plenty of devoted fans besides Yuu. So thankfully that was resolved quicker than I thought and now we can focus on the School Idol Festival. The festival was actually going really well. There were separate stages for all of the solo idols and there were sample songs from all the Nijigasaki girls heard throughout the finale, and only a few hiccups during the day. But nothing Rina couldn’t fix. So much for the rainstorm!
Oh come on guys, plenty of idols from this franchise and other shows performed in the rain and they all turned out just fi…
Oh, I forgot about Honoka.
Oof. Zombieland Saga did her wrong. Never mind what I said!
Unfortunately, the rain didn’t clear up until 7:05 (five minutes after the time allowed for this festival). But all of these idol fans waited and they wanted a show. And so, that’s what they got. Nijigasaki and all the other participating schools performed together. So the festival was a big hit. People who watched it sent a request for another festival to happen. So there’s definitely going to be another School Idol Festival in their future. But what about a season two?
Pfft. COME ON! You know there’s going to be a season two. The girls haven’t experienced heartache of the upperclassmen graduating. Shioriko hasn’t been introduced yet. Tokimeki Runners hasn’t been sung yet. An actual Love Live hasn’t happened yet. That is the whole point of this franchise, right? To have idols participate in the famous Love Live School Idol Festival? So yeah, I know no one has greenlit the Nijigasaki series or announced anything, but I know it’s gonna happen. I can smell it. Love Live will never die. Why else is there going to be a Love Live Superstar series coming out in July?
I gotta say I enjoyed this series. It’s nice to see the struggle of creative differences with the club members. I mean in the past two series, the girls would all agree to something or eventually get to a happy conclusion and sing together in perfect harmony. Cute, but not realistic! And these girls are all very different so it’s good to see a lot more solo performances. Both μ's and Aqours have members with solo songs. It’s just that if you’re an anime only person, you probably wouldn’t know that. Otherwise you would know that Riko and Maki are superior in the singing department.
Prove me otherwise!
Recommendations are always tricky in this area. Idol shows are either loved or hated by the anime community. And I unfortunately can only recommend this to idol show watchers. I’ve already stuck my neck out to recommend Zombieland Saga to everyone.
If you would like to watch Love Live Nijigasaki High School Idol Club (fuck that’s a mouth-full), it is available for streaming only on FUNimation.

The Usual Shows I am Watching List
For the next week or so at least (obviously, I am unlikely to watch every single one on the list, but they are all in the running; it’s like a preview for posts I am likely to make).
The Abyss (Korea) - I am a few eps behind and, frankly, the drama about two dead people brought back into different bodies, hunting a serial killer and finding love, should be more engaging and smarter than it is, but it’s a pleasant easy watch and I am very fond of the two leads.
Angel’s Last Mission (Korea) - I am only two eps in, but the gorgeous intensity reminds me of old-school kdrama melos that I love so much. A bitter blind ballerina and an angel who is supposed to help her find love but falls for her instead is probably doomed for disaster in terms of happy ending, but I will be eating up all the pain!
Arthdal Chronicles (Korea) - grim (but not too grim) cool and otherwordly fantasy. I still don’t care for any characters, but the drama itself is great to watch.
Cage of Love (China) - surprisingly, not a BDSM tale. Hawick Lau wears amazing outfits and seeks revenge while trying to clear himself from being framed on a regular basis and dealing with heroine who sometimes loves him and sometimes thinks he is the resident serial killer. I started it years ago and now feel like continuing.
The Crowned Clown (Korea) - I need a sageuk in my life and watching Yeo Jin Gu in the pretty inferior Absolute Boyfriend made me remember how impressed I was by him playing both a psycho king and a sweet acrobat doppleganger who replaces him, so I restarted it.
Good Omens (UK) - loved the book when I read it a gazillion years ago and the first ep was good!
Heart of Stone/Hua Jai Sila (Thailand) - basically a 1980s romance crack about a pimp who comes back for revenge on his stepmom and falls for his childhood friend, this is insane! But addictive! Also make-outs!
Here to Heart (China) - it’s on my list and I may or may not get to it. I like the angsty premise and credits (they used to be lovers until she broke his heart in what I am sure is either a misunderstanding or noble idiocy), now he is mega rich and she is hired as his assistant, but Zhang Han has never clicked with me for some reason. He’s good-looking, he’s an OK actor, but for whatever reason he just doesn’t have that “it” for me. Maybe this drama will change that.
Just Between Lovers (Korea) - when it was airing and people were falling madly in love with it, I was in a kdrama slump that no kdrama could cure. But now - oh, this is so achingly, perfectly, emotionally gorgeous. Only one ep in, but I already know this will be a keeper.
Kimse Bilmez (Turkey) - the one Turkish entry on this list! Starts on Tuesday, promises angst, women in danger, macho traditional men who defend them blah blah blah. As a modern feminist, I should probably be appalled, but I like what I like and gimme gimme gimme!
Le Coup de Foudre (China) - I just want to see the aristocrat daughter and the hot constable from An Oriental Odyssey be an OTP, all right?
Legend of Fuyao (China) - am on ep 22 I think. It’s pretty and shippy and I won’t stay awake freaking out about characters or plot twists, but watching Ethan Ruan worship the ground Yang Mi walks on never gets old.
Legend of the Phoenix (China) - on ep 4! Get subbed quicker for my sanity, pls. Love story, scheming courtiers, angst, period costumes. What more does a girl need? Jeremy Tsui looking scrumptious, apparently.
The Legends (China) - finally hit ep 20! I like it and it’s a relaxing, fun, cute watch. Though if Zhao Yao figures out Demon Boy likes her before at least a dozen eps pass, despite him doing everything but carving “I love Zhao Yao” into his chest, I would faint from shock.
Letting You Float Like a Dream (China) - I am excited Young Lord from Minglan gets to be the hero of his own story and get the girl he wants (even if he has to reincarnate a couple of times first), plus look cool in 1930s duds. This is very much my thing.
Likit Ruk/The Crown Princess (Thailand) - sometimes a lady just wants to watch a good, old-fashioned princess x bodyguard romance, especially when said princess and bodyguard are hot enough to set the Chao Praya river on fire.
Listening Snow Tower (China) - on ep 38 now. Gorgeous visuals, awesome fights, and the Victorian duality of the chaste and almost unspoken but frighteningly intense romance is so my jam. But if they kill the hero, I will riot. Let him and Lady Badass wuxia into sunset together, pls.
My Absolute Boyfriend (Korea) - I am all up to date with this one. Which is weird because I am not up to date on other dramas I like more. This is a giant meh emotionally, and wastes some really good actors, but it is so good-naturedly unoffensive, I can’t even complain. Still, perhaps the story of a lady buying a lovebot should have stayed solely in manga form because I’ve never seen an amazing adaptation of it.
Pretty Man (China) - I liked the first ep, and you have no idea how rare it is for me to say that about a contemporary cdrama. Childhood loves who find second chances yes pls.
Princess Silver (China) - Yuu Watase, is that you? Did you write this? Cracky, not too serious, but seriously addictive, this is a chocolate bon bon in drama form. PS Pls cure the prince of his touch phobia through LOTS of skinship, princess!
Siege in Fog (China) - romantic dysfunction reigns supreme, even more so than gorgeous 1930s outfits and people. Elvis Han and Sun Yi boil my blood in amazingly pleasant ways as two people in a marriage of inconvenience, where he pines for her but won’t show it and she loves another, until she wakes up and realizes that HELLO IT’S SEX ON LEGS ELVIS, I NEED TO GET SOME OF THAT! And the civil war says, “not so fast!”
Too Late To Say I Love You (China) - I started it years ago when it was not fully subbed and loved it because in my secret heart-of-hearts, I too want a mega hot warlord who looks like Wallace Chung and has stylish 1930s cars and a private army to sweep me off my feet and obsess over me in an unhealthy but hormonally incredible fashion as if I am the only woman in the world. SiF reminded me of this so here we are.
Tried and dropped:
The Plough Department of Song Dynasty (China) - watched one episode, felt my brain leaking out of my ears and bailed. Granted, I watch plenty of dumb stuff so far be it from me to act high and mighty about a bit of brainless fun, but I don’t like mysteries, there was no angst, and I couldn’t care less if all the characters fell into a giant pit, so here we go...
Well Intended Love (China) - people didn’t like it because the male lead was a sociopath. I didn’t like it because it was cutesy and boring and nobody in it bothered to act (or couldn’t.) I bailed long before the dysfunction, that’s how bored I was.

Honestly, I love Guren to bits. I’m not one of those radical people who think he’s abusive/manipulative/problematic and wants to cancel him. He’s a good character, he does good things, and I like him.
But The Thing Is... I have a slight problem with the way Kagami victimizes him. To generalize, His entire character is portrayed like so: Guren has suffered sooo much, and yet he is kind and selfless.
And yes. He is kind and selfless, and those are wonderful things about him.
I start to have an issue when things get like this:
I actually have a problem with this, on a mental health level. Shinya shows pretty clear signs of both depersonalization and antisocial personality disorder. (these are links to definitions of these) They are developmental problems which arise from growing up in an abusive/unhealthy environment.
Guren does show signs of depression.
What is stated here, is that Guren is nice even though he suffered, and therefor deserves love (from Mahiru), more than Shinya does.
In the second panel, Kagami is comparing two VERY different types of trauma, and basically saying that Guren’s is far worse. Also, his way of coping with trauma is superior to Shinya’s.
Let’s talk about their individual traumas, because I do not believe he “lives in a world more soaked in helplessness and despair”.
Guren Ichinose:
Loved a girl he was not allowed to love, and was thus beaten up as a child. A lot.
And his dad died.
His friends died for a moment. (But they are alive now)
His girlfriend is now a demon.
The prominent struggle in his life, is that he loves people, and they are unfairly taken away from them. And he gets punched and bullied for no reason. He is surrounded by people who love him intensely, such as Sayuri, Shigure, Mahiru, Sekae. Other people love him, though don’t express it as much: Yuu, Shinya, Goshi.
Shinya Hiragi:
Parents abandoned him.
Adoptive parent neglected him.
Adoptive siblings abused him.
Went through “torture training”, being electrocuted and cut.
For 5 years during the most developmentally vulnerable time of childhood, he was trapped in an arena in which he never saw sunlight or the outside. He was threatened to be murdered every day and experienced being stabbed on many occasions. Also forced to kill dozens of children.
Discarded by fiancée, unloved by any significant other.
No friends until age 16.
Only one close friend all his life, and this person is emotionally distant and does not show much sympathy or affection (Guren)
All his childhood, Shinya has not experienced love PERIOD. The people who are supposed to love him the most, his family, is who hurts him the most. He had no friends, nowhere safe.
Guren experienced trauma in the outside world, but has a cozy protective shell to retreat back into and heal. His home is full of people who adore him, and take care of him.
This narrative that Kagami is perpetuating, that abused individuals should act a certain way, or they don’t deserve the affection of others... Is pretty sick. I could understand if Shinya thinks he is worthless, because of his own insecurities, and Kagami does not actually believe that people who act in unhealthy ways due to trauma do not deserve love.
But the thing is, everything in this scene treats this as an incredible, truth-bearing revelation. His arms are spread out to the sky and splayed open. He is looking up. Byakkomaru does not refute his claim. Instead, he is given a shot looking down on him, almost as if chastising him.
Byakkomaru, a separate entity from Shinya, encourages this concept. He says something along the lines of “Yes, Guren has suffered more than you, and he refuses to give up despite that. You should have been more like him.”
This piece of literature is aimed towards children and young adults, who have likely experienced their own physical and emotional traumas. Everyone is fighting their own battles. I think this is a really bad message to send.
People who have been abused should not be expected to act any other way than what helps them cope with reality. As long as they are not hurting anyone, they should not be degraded and made to feel insuperior. People deserve love and affection, not because they act a certain way, but because it is a quintessential requirement to remain mentally healthy.
Shinoa, who has experienced tremendous amount of neglect, is also told in the narrative that she should be more like Guren. Because her histrionic way of coping with things, is not as valid as Guren’s selfless actions.
This is subjective but, as far as physical trauma goes, I think electrocution and being in a five year long knife-fight is a little more intense than getting punched. Yeah, his dad died. At least he had a dad who loved him. Yeah, his girlfriend died. At least he had a person who loved him. He has like four women who devote their life to him. Yeah, his friends died. At least he has some.
The absolute absence of love Shinya receives from anyone also further pushes this narrative that he “does not deserve it”.
I think people often do not notice that in Guren’s Squad, they hardly ever interact with Shinya. All 3 girls, in total, speak 33 lines to him in the ENTIRE series. 19 are ABOUT GUREN. 7 are about themselves. The last 5 are when Mito plays against Shinya in Shoji. Oh and 2 about Mahiru.
Goshi says 14 lines and 4 are about Guren, 10 are about girls.
I can hardly even consider them his friends! They never ask him how he is, or try to show him an ounce of emotional comfort. Meanwhile, they give Guren SO MUCH EMOTIONAL COMFORT:
"Please, you can’t put yourself in danger anymore, Guren! I can’t take it. I’ve already worried enough for at least two lifetimes!"
"But I have to stay close, Guren! How else will I protect you?"
"I believe in you, Guren," affirmed Mito. "Remember? You’re dear to me. You’re my friend."
"Our first priority has to be your safety, Guren."
"Every time it hits midnight and a new day starts, you get this expression on your face like you’re being backed up against a wall. You seem so sad, like you’re about to cry. But there’s nothing I can do to help. I’m not strong, not like Mahiru Hiragi, so what could I do? …But… but… if something’s bothering you, Guren, at the very least I wish I could suffer with you. I know it’s presumptuous of me, but I wish… even, just a little… that you’d rely on me more.”
Here’s a list of emotionally supportive things they have said to Shinya:
...
...
Like, fuck man. He really gets no affection whatsoever.
I really would appreciate a series where a character is damaged due to trauma, and isn’t made to feel worthless because of that damage.
Please understand this: It is completely within your freedom to decide who you think is more of a traumatized character. No SWAT team is gonna come break down your door because you sympathize with our dear main character. Again, I love Guren, he’s my baby. The series would not be the same without him. He adds a lot of wonderful dialogue and guides Yuu with his demon in a very constructive way.
This was solely my disdain towards the treatment of mental illness in characters. There needs to be better representation, and acknowledgement of their struggles.
Thank you for reading this? I doubt anyone will haha I just wanted to rant.

Characters I Think Can (and possibly can't) defeat Alastor
You know. Different characters in Hazbin going up against Alastor one day in a full on power battle with him would be interesting. But what about other characters from other fandoms?
Disclaimer: Some characters from some fandoms, I haven't seen all of (like movies, shows and anime). So please keep that in mind.
I will also categorize characters in the following: High Chance, Medium Chance, Low Chance
High Chance meaning they could most definatley defeat him easily without any injuries or within the blink of an eye, Medium Chance, they could defeat him but it would take a while to, may take some injuries, Low Chance, will most definatley end up with injuries, maybe even come close to dying.
Please note: I don't hate Alastor. He's a really interesting character in my book. This idea has just been in my head for a while. And I wanna see if other people will agree and or disagree. You are also free to reblog this and add onto the list if you want to. This is an open topic to discuss. As long as it remains peaceful and civil. If it gets out of hand, I will delete this post.
This post may also contain spoilers from other shows, anime, cartoons, and movies. I'm leaving game characters out of this because I haven't played a lot of games in order to put those characters on this list. But you are free to add game characters if you wish. You have been warned of possible spoilers!
Anyways. On with the list. This also will be in no particular order power wise so yeah.
High Chance:
1. Mob/Shigeo Kageyama (Mob Psycho 100) (As of this post, I have 2 more episodes left remaining in Season 2. Do not spoil for me and for others please!)
Okay. Maybe not when he's at normal power (0%). But when he's at 100%, that boy is an explosive depending on what emotion he's feeling at the time of a situation. Yes, he has his rule of not using his psychic powers against others. But when the people he holds dearly are in danger of possibly dying or not, he is not a force to be messed with.
(An example of when he's at 100%)
2. Bill Cipher (Gravity Falls) (Spoiler warning!)
We all know of how powerful Bill is. He caused a Weirdmaggedon on Gravity Falls in the Season 2 finale. He froze time, he can grow, he can change his form, and he's been around since the beginning of time itself. Sure, he was defeated by Mabel and Dipper themselves a few times already. But as a whole, this triangle demon is pretty much an unstoppable force to deal with if you really look at it.
He also has a lot of similar qualities to that of Alastor. He likes to make deals, he likes to cause trouble, a lot of the citizens fear him, etc.
3. Kurumi (Date a Live) (Spoiler warning!)
It's been a long time since I last watched Date a Live. But from what I remember, this girl is pretty powerful. If my memory serves me correctly, she can freeze time, she can make duplicates of herself, she weilds a shotgun, she's quite a handful power wise. I haven't seen all of Date a Live. Just the 1st Season. So idk if other seasons/spin offs/OVA's/movies explore more on her powers or not (please don't spoil if it does).
4. Gon (Hunter x Hunter 2011) (Spoiler warning!)
I honestly do think that Gon has a high chance of defeating Alastor. We saw him duke it out with Neferpitou and he won for the sake of a friend. Just like Mob, he may not seem strong appearance wise but this boy has taken on some people much powerful than he is and won. Sure, his battle with the Chimera Ants almost left him for dead but he still made it out alive in the end thanks to Killua's help.
5. Elsa (Frozen, Frozen 2) (Please note I have not seen anything else Frozen related such as shorts. So I'm basing all of this based on what I have seen from Frozen. Any Frozen shorts that may have development on Elsa's powers! I have now seen Frozen 2 on YouTube due to a link but that doesn't mean you can spoil it for others!)
As rediculous as this may sound to some, she probably does have a high chance of defeating Alastor. We saw this girl make an entire ice castle just from her powers alone in Frozen within the course of a 2-3 minute song that everyone has embedded in their heads at this point in time. She can also change her outfits via her powers as well and make animate snow/ice creatures with her powers as well. Heck, we saw her freeze an entire kingdom which was the plot starter for Frozen! Again. Others may have other opinions. But this is what I think.
Medium Chance:
1. Celty Sturloson (Durarara!) (Spoiler warning!)
Like Date a Live, it's been quite a while since I last seen the entirety of Durarara so just bare with me on this. For those that don't know, Celty is a Dullahan, a creature from Irish folklore which is basically like their version of the Grim Reaper. Dullahans supposedly carry their heads around in their arms after they die. But in Celty's case, she lost her head and she kind of gave up on searching for it towards the end of the series. She can make a black ball out of an inescapable substance from her powers, she can make web-like structures with them as well, and she also does weild a scythe. Her motorcycle can also transform into different vehicles such as a horse (which is default), a bike, a carriage, etc.
2. Lelouch Lamporouge (Code Geass) (Please note that I have never completed this anime. I had like 9 episodes remaining in Season 1. So please don't spoil anything in regards to Lelouch's power development!)
I kind of have my doubts with Lelouch on this one since his powers require him to look at someone directly in the eye in order to possess them so he can command them to do something against their own will. But if he plays his cards right (which he's pretty good at doing), he could have a chance of defeating Alastor. Like I previously mentioned, I haven't completed all of Code Geass so I don't know the full extent of Lelouch's powers outside of Season 1. I already also mentioned Lelouch's powers previously, too so yeah lol. But yeah. I kind of have my doubts when it comes to him.
3. Yuu Otosaka (Charlotte) (Spoiler warning!)
Yuu would most likely have a medium chance of defeating Alastor because of his ability to harness other's powers. Keep in mind. It's also been a while since I've last seen Charlotte so bare with me on this one as well. I do think he would come out with some injuries because of the fact that he doesn't know the extent of other's powers that he has harnessed from them, he only knows about his own powers very well. If he's not careful, he could end up injured.
4. Albedo (Overlord) (Please note that I've only seen Season 1 so don't spoil anything that's important to Albedo's power development!)
I personally don't think Einz himself would go out to try to fight someone that's as powerful as he is unless it posed as a threat to his life and or his kingdom. So, I would think that he'd send his servants to survey the area of any potential threats and to get rid of them immediatley before they become a big threat. He probably wouldn't send Albedo out first but maybe she could be his 2nd to last resort before going to investigate himself. Either that or she'd automatically volunteer herself out of the sake of her love for Einz. Which, he'd probably agree with once the begging gets annoying.
5. Chrollo Lucilfer (Hunter x Hunter 2011) (Spoiler warning!)
This would be before he got his powers taken away and restricted into a state of Zetsu by Kurapika. He has shown to be pretty powerful. He made it out alive when fighting against two members of the Zoldyck family. But I think the only disadvantage to this would be the fact that he needs his Nen book in order to use other's powers. Without his Nen book, he's basically powerless.
Low Chance:
1. Ganta (Deadman Wonderland) (Spoiler warning!)
It's been quite a while since I've seen Deadman Wonderland. Bare with me here. So much like Gon, Ganta has taken on some pretty powerful Deadmen while serving his time in Deadman Wonderland after being accused of a crime he was blackmailed against for. I don't exactly remember his Deadman ability since it's been so long. But I do think he'd come out with quite a lot of injuries after challenging Alastor to a fight.
2. Decim (Death Parade) (Spoiler warning!)
The only thing I'm aware of power wise for Decim is that he can use web-like strings to hold people down after they've realized they're dead. I've heard quite a bit saying that he's based on the Greek god, Decima. Idk if that's true or not tho. But the extent of his powers is unknown and I highly doubt Death Parade will continue as an anime series. So I would think he has a low chance at defeating Alastor with all that we currently know on his powers.
3. Sebastian Micaelis (Black Butler/Kuroshitsuji) (Spoiler warning!)
A lot of fangirls will probably hate me for this. Lol. But I kind of doubt Sebastian could defeat Alastor without getting injured. We don't know the full extent of his powers yet despite also coming from Hell in that universe. So, that's the reason to my doubts.
4. Magica De Spell (DuckTales 2017) (Spoiler warning!)
This would be before the Shadow War! I'm also not going to discuss the 1987 show or the original comics since I've never completed the 1987 show nor have I read any of the original comics yet. So I'm only relying on what we've seen so far in the reboot. Like Bill, she was able to start this apocalypse by taking everyone's shadows from them. She trapped Scrooge in his own lucky dime in order to execute her plans. But I doubt she'd be able to defeat Alastor in all honesty.
5. Lena De Spell (DuckTales 2017) (Spoiler warning!)
Lena De Spell is the niece of Magica De Spell. She was created as a shadow with the appearance of the real girl in order to unwillingly help Magica with her plans to take over Duckburg in the exchange for her freedom. After Magica is defeated and powerless, Lena now currently possesses Magica's powers via her amulet. So she undoubtingly has some of the same powers that Magica had. But since she hasn't really had much character development/power development as of this post, I kind of doubt she could defeat Alastor without being injured.
Aand that's all. If you want to add to this post, reblogs are appriciated. Thank you!

I see no god up here other than me
Nishinoya- My favorite character. My guy. The rolling thunder. The absolute madlad. I just love him, what else can I say? I was supposed to make it to his canon height (5′2), but I never even made it there, so I am officially shorter than Nishinoya Yu.
Tadashi- He’s so cute. He’s going to be the next team mom after Suga leaves and I absolutely cannot wait. He’s just so adorable and I love his freckles.
Suga- Team mom, what else can I say? I can relate.
Oikawa- Mmm, he’s cute and not in the same was as Tadashi. I know it’s typical, but it’s also accurate. If you don’t think Oikawa’s a stud, then you’re wrong. Also, his intimidation talk is so attractive.
Kenma- :3
Akaashi- His dynamic with Bokuto is hilarious. I absolutely adore their relationship. I just can’t resist laughing everytime Akaashi essentially says, “Go home, Bokuto, you’re drunk.”
You’re the best
Bokuto- Fun story: I saw that season three was going to be dubbed (yes, I watch the dub, fight me) and I got super excited and immediately looked to see who Bokuto’s voice actor was going to be. When I saw that it was Ian Sinclair, I got really excited and screamed. However, I’m really dumb, because Bokuto was in season 2, and I just didn’t notice his voice. Way to go, me.
Iwa-chan- Shittykawa. Assikawa. Trashykawa.
Akiteru- I named the main character in my story after him. Plus, he’s pretty cute.
Lev- Tol bean.
Saeko- She’s so great and such a good big sister. However, I would not like to be in a car with her.
Hey, I think you’re pretty cool, I like you a lot
Tendo- He’s funny sometimes, I guess.
Aone- Shouyo Hinata protection squad, Kageyama move over.
Takeda- He taught me everything I know about volleyball.
Yachi- Aww, what a cutie.
Kiyoko- Calm and collected. And super hot.
Hinata- He’s the main character. Yep. That’s it.
Ukai- Sorry, sensei, you didn’t stick out to me all that much.
Kageyama- Nic, niff, nife, knife, nnnice.
I remember you
Dadchi- Very dad. Very stern.
Tsukki- Cute around Tadashi, just a tsundere around everyone else.
Asahi- Scaredy-cat tough guy.
Kuroo- Very cat dad. Very cat stern.
Ennoshita- Yeah. He existed.
Tanaka- Very loud. Could do without.
Ushijima- You should’ve come to Shiratorizawa.
Futakuchi- I literally remembered he existed today since his birthday was yesterday.
Then there’s that one guy that I don’t remember. I know who he is, but barely, and I don’t know like, anything about him, so I’m choosing to ignore his existence.
Final favorite characters list:
1. Nishinoya Yuu
2. Tadashi Yamaguchi
3. Sugwara Koushi
4. Oikawa Tooru and Morisuke Yaku
5. Kenma Kozume and Akaashi Keiji

Channy Watches Anime Sometimes And You Should Too: Fall 2018 Edition
I’ve feel like I’ve been trying to make this post for forever, but life has gotten a little busy with Halloween prep and the like. Regardless, this particular season is one of my favorites, and I’m hoping that some of the new anime coming out of this season become some of my favorites as well. With that, let’s get started! I’ll actually be listing these anime from my favorite so far, but as time goes on, my opinion could obviously change. But, without further ado, here we go!
So Many Colors in the Future What a Wonderful World
In Nagasaki, a descendant of mages, 17-year-old Hitomi lost her sense of color at a young age and grew up lacking emotion. Her grandmother Kohaku, a great mage, sends Hitomi to the past, to the year 2018. There, she spends time with a 17-year-old Kohaku and friends from club activities.
Right now is the perfect time of year to watch something that feels a little...magical. So far this show is super pretty, and I really like the concept too. The pace is a bit slow, but it honestly makes the experience feel more relaxing instead of as if it’s dragging, at least in my opinion. Considering this plo has magic and time travel in it, I’ll be looking forward to see where it goes.
Run with the Wind
Kakeru, a former elite runner at high school, is chased for stealing food. He is saved by a Kansei University student Haiji, who is also a runner. Haiji persuades Kakeru to live in the old apartment "Chikuseisou" where he plans to team up with fellow residents to enter Hakone Ekiden Marathon, one of the most prominent university races in Japan. Kakeru soon finds out that all of the residents except for Haiji and himself are complete novices.
So, after giving sports anime a chance last season, I found that I really enjoyed it. Yeah, it’s likely predictable, and often follows the same formula, but usually the shows are super feel good with just the right amount of painful drama on the side to make your heart hurt. I think, actually I know, this is the reason that I can watch animated sports when I can’t really watch them at all in real life. The stakes here seem to feel higher because I get to know the characters along the way, and I feel as if I really have someone to root for. That being said, this anime is awesome so far. The animation is fluid, and the way it’s directed is just so, so beautiful.
Zombieland Saga
A typical morning. The usual music. Their normal lives. The peace these seven girls experience will suddenly be destroyed. By the living dead... zombies. A reality that they never wanted a part of, an amazing and terrifying zombie world. They all share one wish: "We want to live." These girls will struggle through this saga, in order to achieve a miracle.
And idol show, but with zombies! Honestly, this show wasn’t even on my radar until I saw a clip of it on youtube, which was from the very beginning of the first episode, and I’m so glad that I decided to pick it up. I feel like this is hilarious commentary on just how terrible life can be for real life idols, but we’ll see how the show ends up playing out. For now I’ve been super happy with it.
As Miss Beelzebub Likes
Beelzebub is a great demon lord who rules over several millions of demons. Myurin, who decides to serve the demon lord, learns that not only does Beelzebub lack the poise of a great demon, but is also a laid-back girl who likes fluffy things. Thus begins the daily-life comedy revolving around the many villains in the demon world.
Sure, this show might be about hell and demons, but it’s seriously the cutest thing I’ve ever fucking seen. Honestly it’s like a slice of life workplace romantic comedy, and I enjoy the shit out of it every single week.
Bloom into You
Yuu has always loved shoujo manga and awaits the day she gets a love confession that sends her heart aflutter with bubbles and blushes, and yet when a junior high classmate confesses his feelings to her...she feels nothing. Disappointed and confused, Yuu enters high school still unsure how to respond. That's when Yuu sees the beautiful student council president Nanami turn down a suitor with such maturity that she's inspired to ask her for help. But when the next person to confess to Yuu is Nanami herself. Has her shoujo romance finally begun?
Y’all I relate to the main character, Yuu, here so much that it’s not even funny. This is mostly because (slight spoiler alert) even when she does get a confession from Nanami, she still doesn’t really feel anything. There’s no flash of light, or punch to the gut telling her that yes, this is the one! She even feels jealous that Nanami can have such feelings. I know in the long run she’s going to feel something for Nanami, but so far it’s been amazing seeing a character like this in a romance anime! Regardless, this has been a really cute shoujo so far, and I can’t wait to see where it leads.
Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai
Puberty syndrome – abnormal experiences rumored on the internet to be caused by sensitivity and instability during adolescence. This year, Sakuta Azusagawa, a second-year student at a high school near Enoshima, meets several girls that are experiencing this "puberty syndrome." For instance, he meets a wild bunny girl in the library. She turns out to be an actress on hiatus, Mai Sakurajima, who is also his senior at the school. For some reason, no one else can see this enchanting girl. How did she become invisible...? As Sakuta searches for answers to help Mai, they spend more time together, and he eventually learns of her hidden feelings...
Weird title and weird plot summary, I know, but so far this one has been fairly intriguing. I know it sounds like it’s going to be a harem anime, but with how the episodes have all gone so far, I don’t think thats going to be the case. I really hope not to be disappointed with this one, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
Tsurune
The story follows Minato Narumiya. Minato played Japanese archery in middle school, but after a certain incident, he ran away from the sport. In high school, Minato meets new friends, and together as part of their school's archery club they aim to win the prefectural tournament.
Another sports anime, and while this one does have a lot of promise due to the fact that it has Kyoto Animation backing it up, there’s something about the pacing that hasn’t quite grabbed me just yet. This one only started a couple of weeks ago though, so there’s still a lot of time for the story to completely take hold of my heart. As a side note, the music in this is really beautiful, and it’s been one of my favorite parts so far.
Boarding School Juliet
The story takes place at Grigio Academy Boarding School where students come from two rivaling countries known as the "Black Dogs" and "White Cats." Persia and Inuzaka are leaders of their respective dorms, but they are secretly in love with each other. Now, they must keep their relationship a secret from other dorm mates while trying to avoid trouble.
In the beginning I was afraid this one was going to be far too melodramatic for me, but thankfully this is taking a comedic route instead of a tragic one. However, something with this anime just isn’t clicking with me despite the fact that I really want to like it. Normally romantic comedies are my favorite genre, but I think the comedy here is what’s not hitting the right notes, at least for me personally. I’m going to stick with this one to see where it goes, but I hope to not be too disappointed by it in the long run.
Anima Yell!
The anime centers on Kohane Hatoya, a young girl who loves to be helpful to others. After she moves from middle school to high school, she becomes fascinated with cheerleading, and she starts a cheerleading club at her high school. Joining Kohane in her cheerleading activities is the experienced Hizume and Kohane's childhood friend Uki.
One last sports anime, though this one is so low on the list mostly because I’m not expecting much from it. Overall it’s a cute anime about cute girls doing cute cheers, and it’s been a nice show to unwind with on my Sunday evenings.

Beginners guide for wlw mangas/manhwas
1. Tamen De Gushi (Ongoing)
Okay. Listen. This manhwa is for yall out there who just want a chill, innocent, non complicated, 50/50 fluff-to-humor ratio story. Blonde and Brunette. And listen, listen, listen... This is DIABETES worth sugar. The art style is really good too. It’s simple but somewhat sophisticated. So far it has 139 short chapters (about 12 pages per chapter). There’s a linear story to it, but it sometimes drifts to a completely different timeline. It updates about once a month, or sometimes once every two months. 11/12
2. Fluttering/Exciting Feelings (Ongoing/Currently in Hiatus due to Author’s health)
Before I even start with this, I got major Korrasami vibes out of it ho ly shit. Anyway, this manhwa is currently at chapter 68, and sad to say that the author may never continue the story again due to cancer and several other reasons. But I am still adding this manhwa to the list because it’s sooo good. It’s not as fluffy and humorous as Tamen De Gushi because later in the story, No-rae (brown hair) brings in some drama while Seol-a has drama of her own kind. The art is simple but it’s great enough to look amazing. Still though, the manhwa is great, but sadly... it might be discontinued :(. 10/12
3. Citrus [Saburouta] (Ongoing)
I like this manga. I like it a lot. The art is good anatomy wise, but sometimes it gets too.... much..... Here’s a note, though: These two are step sisters. Yes. You heard me right. There are a lot of love triangles, a lot of drama, a lot of “Im-gonna-kiss-her-wait-no-nvm” moments, but there are a lot of WELL-DRAWN kiss scenes and semi-sexual things. There is almost no story line? Well, there is, but it’s your typical high school plot. It barely updates, and it currently has 30 chapters. Probably updates once every two months. 8.5/12
4. Yagate Kimi Ni Naru (Ongoing)
Yo, listen. This one is ....... VERY complicated. If you are planning on reading this story, I need you to know that this is as basic as I can put it: Nanami hates herself and doesn’t want her partner Yuu to fall in love with her, while Yuu is someone who can’t fall in love with someone. The art is simple but good god it’s really good *o*. It has fluff, but for every fluff there will always be some sort of angst right after or before it. There is certainly a plot line on this but it doesn’t focus too much on the plot. Characters are great and they have a personality of their own. Despite the “Im not in love” thing that is going on in this manga, there are many, many, cute parts. It updates about once every month or every two months. 10.5/12
5. The Love Doctor (Ongoing)
(PS: this image is misleading btw but it was too fucking cute) I. freaking. love. this. manhwa. so. much. Now, this has many, many fluff moments but it also has its bulk of angst and drama. Love(ish) triangles, dark past from both parties, and there IS an age gap between the two but I forgot how many years. Still though!!! It is worth a read! The art style is cute and light and adorable, but sometimes the emotions can start looking the same in each panel (especially for one of the characters). Updates, I believe, every month. 11/12
6. Pulse [Ratana Satis] (Ongoing)
Look at this art. Look at it. Isn’t it cute? Well, if you’re here for cute shit turn the fuck away cus this IS indeed cute, buuuuuut it also has sex scenes. There is also fluff and drama, and as you can see, one of them is a doctor. The art style is pretty well done and really sophisticated. I can’t remember if there’s an age gap? I’m pretty sure there is? Anyway!!! There’s a story, yes, and also a shitty ex that no one should like but everyone feels sorry for (for good reasons of course). 12/12
7. Magan & Danai / Magan he Danai (Ongoing)
This one reminds me of Tamen De Gushi a lot, BUT.... This one is directed to the life of two women who love each other and what happens in their daily life. The art is much more detailed that TDG, and the characters have very different personalities. Danai, the shorter one, is the more mature one but also the more feminine one while Magan, the taller one, is definitely a fucking cry baby. To be honest, idk how frequently it updates? But!!! Still!! Go watch!!! 11/12
8. What Does the Fox Say? (Ongoing, 2 chapters left)
Ho ly shit whe re to be gin...? Definitely not light. It is not full of fun or fluffy or innocent. This manhwa is dark, sexy, angsty, drama-filled, teeth gritting, and very complicated. VERY, VERY, VERY, Adult. A story with a beautiful young blonde who loves a much older boss, and the much older boss has a shitty ex that everyone loves who fucked up a lot but she has her reasons. This is one of those manhwas that you need to ANALYZE every. single. fucking. scene. It is one of those where each scene MEANS something and you have to keep a sharp eye even at the sex scenes. The art style is good. Not amazing, but decent enough. As I said, it ends in two chapters. It updates twice a month (from my observations). 12/12
*Note: These are all based on my observations

Nakatani Nio & Canno
…So, I create a separate thread for this, as suggested by Nezchan.
Original interview http://blog.livedoor.jp/geek/archives/51522471.html (SITE NOT SAFE FOR WORK)
It was published at the time volume 2 of YagaKimi came out. I apologize for potential inaccuracies in the translation.
(Doc file )
−−−−−−−−−−−
Special conversation between "Yagate Kimi ni Naru"'s Nakatani Nio and "Ano Ko ni Kiss to Shirayuri wo"'s Canno.
From the origin of their fixation on yuri to their work ethics, to the works in which they "felt the presence of yuri", the two authors who carry the yuri genre on their shoulders openly talked with us.
−−Today we're having a conversation in which you two can't not participate, so I thank you both for coming while you're so busy. Is this the first time you actually meet?
Nakatani Nio: Since we met a few days ago at Yuri-ten in Ikebukuro, this is actually our second meeting.
Canno: Since Nakatani-san's manga has a very cool craft to it, I expected her to be equally cool. And when we met, well, she was, but she was also a very kind and lovely woman.
NN: Really? What's this all about! (laugh) I actually always bought Canno-san's doujinshis at doujin displays, so of course I've known about her for a while now.
Ca: Same for me, I've been reading Nakatani-san's doujins since before "Yagate Kimi ni Naru" started. I didn't know very well the exact genre of her works, but Melonbooks had a special page attached saying "It's an awesome manga!", so I bought them regardless.
−−So you knew who the other was before you were serialized. What started your interest in Yuri, Canno-san?
Ca: I guess the trigger was reading "Maria-sama ga miteru" (Shūeisha) in high school. I didn't really care much about the genre at first, but after reading it I became hooked on it.
NN: That's the most notorious entry point! What couple did you like the most?
Ca: My favorite character is Yoshino from "Yellow Rose", and I ship her with Rei-chan. Did you read MariMite, Nakatani-san?
NN: Since it's a sort of landmark for Yuri, I read volume 1 for my culture, and I liked it, but I don't have much time to read novels, so I haven't read the rest. For now I'm only reading one small bit at a time.
Ca: Please be sure to read at least to "Rainy Blue".
NN: I don't quite get that "stop at Rainy" phrase that Yuri fans always use...
Ca: Well, don't worry about that, buy them until Rainy Blue.
NN: Alright, I'll read it.
Ca: Have you enjoyed a particular Yuri series lately?
NN: In my last interview, when I said I like "Hibike! Euphonium" (novel by Takarajimasha, anime by Kyōto Animation), I was retorted that it wasn't Yuri. But there were scenes where I did feel a Yuri vibe, so it was fine by me. Of course, Euphonium as a whole can't really be called a Yuri, but to me it counts as long as I can feel it in some parts.
Ca: Yeah, I'm that way too. Take "Precure" (Tōei Animation): I watch it as a goldmine of yuri, and in my favorite series, Doki Doki, there's that girl called Hishikawa Rikka...
NN: Oh yeah, Hishikawa!
Ca: She's the main character Aida Mana's partner, but as Mana builds relationships with other characters, Rikka gets jealous and uneasy. If you watch this as a grade schooler, you can think that it's natural to feel this way towards a friend, but when you watch it as an adult, you totally feel the Yuri!
NN: Ahaha! So you have more fun seeing Yuri in mainstream works than reading actual yuri?
Ca: I feel it has become this way, lately, yes. Before, I read only Yuri-hime Comics and such, works that I fully knew were Yuri, but these times I've started to look for Yuri in works that aren't generally lauded as such.
NN: Did it start when you started to draw "AnoKiss"?
Ca: Hmm, I wonder? Lately I enjoy feeling the Yuri in stuff like the yonkoma in "Kirara" (Houbunsha), but I think I also got tired with overly serious and dark works as I grew older. So more than "AnoKiss", it may just be that I'm getting old (laugh).
NN: Since I've started drawing Yuri manga, I've become more conscious of other Yuri works, but what about you, Canno-san? Has drawing AnoKiss made your Yuri antenna more sensitive?
Ca: Not that much, I would say. Even before my love for Yuri awakened, I liked same-sex romance in general, so outside of that and seeing Yuri in girly anime, my sensitivity is still pretty much the same.
NN: I think I feel the same. So more than Yuri itself, what you really enjoy is shipping, right?
Ca: Yes, I love shipping. There are a lot of people who are both into BL and Yuri, aren't there. (?)
−−Then why do you write Yuri rather than BL?
Ca: I love drawing facial expressions, and if I have to draw very expressive faces, I have more fun with girls. And if I have two girls, that's twice the luck. (laugh) More than romantic love iself, I like ambiguous relationships that are close to love but might be something else. But if I write such relationships with a boy and a girl, everyone ends up naturally assuming that it's love. However, with two girls the feeling is a bit more balanced, I think. I guess it would be the same with two boys, but as I said I have more fun drawing girls, so… (laugh)
NN: It's true that in AnoKiss, the characters never use the words "love" or "romance". Is that deliberate on your part?
Ca: It's not exactly deliberate, but it's a natural result of that feeling, I guess. And you, Nakatani-san, what made you draw girl's love manga?
NN: I thought, "if a cute girl and a cute girl do cute stuff, it'll be hella cute."
Ca: So you're no different from me! (laugh)
NN: Your way of saying it was cooler, though. (laugh)
Ca: But in YagaKimi there's Maki-kun, who's a guy, right? Didn't you want to avoid featuring boys in a Yuri series?
NN: I didn't. In my interview for Dengeki Online, I said that "In a world where there are also men, I want girls to be chosen anyway." [sorry, I'm not quite sure what the original sentence means here > 「男性もいる世界観の中で、あえて女の子を選んだ形で描きたい」 ] But while there are girls that "fall in love specifically with girls", I think there are also girls "whose crush just happens to be a girl". I wanted to also show that side in the characters' personalities and specificities, and I didn't think I could really depict it if men were completely absent. What do you feel about the presence of male characters in YagaKimi's cast, Canno-san?
Ca: Since Maki-kun doesn't directly get involved in love affairs, I haven't really paid much attention to him, regardless of his gender. If he had made an obvious move on Nanami-senpai or Yuu-chan I would probably have thought "hey, he's a guy", but so far there's no indication he's going to approach them or any of the girls.
NN: I see, that's an original way to view it.
Ca: For now, I only think of Maki-kun as un uke, with Doujima-kun as the seme.
NN: Thank you very mu… wait, what? (laugh) In AnoKiss, however, there's not a trace of male presence.
Ca: Yes, right from the start I decided that there would't be any male characters.
NN: Writing the word "yuri" in the title feels like a sort of challenge. Didn't it take courage?
Ca: I thought that it might not reach the potential readers if I didn't say right away "this is Yuri". So I wanted to get that information across. Since the series was gonna focus on "yuri" and "kiss", the best-sounding title I found with those two words was "Ano Ko ni Kiss to Shirayuri wo". How did you decide on the title "Yagate Kimi ni Naru"?
NN: I did put a lot of meaning in the title, but even in the prototypes I chose ones that had a sort of Yuri aura to them. When volume 1 came out, I was very careful to appeal to Yuri lovers, with the cover (two girls gazing at each other) or the the band around the cover.
Ca: But that's not the case of the title.
NN: Indeed, but many yuri fans told me that "One Day, I Will Become You" sounds extremely Yuri. But some also say "I thought it was a story of substitution".
Ca: Like some kind of horror story. "I'll gradually take your place…" (laugh)
NN: Exactly. (laugh) In "AnoKiss", you have one kiss per chapter, huh.
Ca: Yes, my editor told me to include a kissing scene every time. And to create highlight scenes, in a Yuri manga the kissing scenes might be a selling point, they said. (laugh)
NN: I can get that. You think carefully about where the kiss will be, won't you?
Ca: I think the place where a kiss is given is significant, so I don't choose it at random. My editor even keeps an Excel file where they listed who kisses whom and where. Like, in volume 3, "kiss on the foot, indicating submission." (laugh)
NN: A kiss list, now that's interesting! Although, when you say "Excel", it kind of takes the magic away. (laugh)
Ca: But making a list of "character X gives a kiss there in chapter Y" means that by chapter 20 we've almost run out of body parts to kiss. (laugh)
NN: It's important to have some variety in the kisses, I guess. So far, my series has only had 2 kissing scenes, but I still have that voice telling me "this, here, is the highlight!", so I put all my effort onto that point. It's like a fighting game, where you wait for the exact moment when your special attack is sure to hit hard.
−−Nakatani-san, did you already know about AnoKiss when you started to draw YagaKimi?
NN: Well, if you draw yuri manga, AnoKiss has already become hard to ignore, so I read it intensely to help me for my own work. Even leaving that aside, my first impression when opening a volume was "Wow, the author is good!" (laugh)
Ca: No way! Thank you very much. (laugh)
NN: To me, seeing a yuri manga that wasn't shoujo-like was refreshing. Sure, it is love-themed, but in the tight lining and expressions, or in the panel layout, it feels closer to shounen. Since there are a lot of shounen aspects in my own way of drawing, I felt maybe we had some things in common in that regard.
Ca: I never read that many shounen manga growing up, and used to read almost only shoujo manga, but I do think my drawings aren't very shoujo-like, so you opinion confirms that.
NN: To me, that makes it easier to read, actually. So I'm glad there is a yuri series with this kind of style!
Ca: I found the art incredibly good too when I read YagaKimi's first chapter. Then Yuu-chan received a confession from a boy, I wondered how she would react, and what kind of yuri story it would evolve into, I was really excited. After reading the first volume, I was both supporting Nanami-senpai and sympathising with Yuu-chan, who couldn't understand what it was like to be in love. I actually think that if I was into Yuu-chan's shoes, I would be scared of Nanami-senpai. Even though you keep saying "I don't understand", she's constantly pushing in. So reading that and seeing Yuu-chan's acceptance of it, I find her incredibly kind-hearted.
NN: I see. (laugh)
Ca: And yet I'm like "Do your best, Nanami-senpai!", like I'm trying to fan the flames of yuri. (laugh) More specifically, I loved the entire chapter where Nanami-senpai went to Yuu-chan's place! But I guess that's how even a girl feels when she goes to the place of the girl she likes.
NN: I'm glad you say that. (laugh)
Ca: Also, I'm really intrigued by Saeki-senpai. When Nanami-senpai chose Yuu-chan for the election campaign, her friend started to worry that she didn't rely on her, and I love this kind of "complication". (laugh)
NN: Ah, so you do love complications! I actually love Towako from AnoKiss. (laugh) Personally, I sometimes feel I can't write a story without drama, but in a generally quiet and bright story like AnoKiss I was kind of surprised to see a girl like her, who brought problems. I find your way of drawing difficult emotions yet being very clear in the execution really enthralling. [難しい感情を描きつつ、爽やかに仕上げているのが魅力的だと感じます。]
Ca: For AnoKiss, I'm adamant on concluding a given arc within a single volume, or 5 chapters, so I can't create too much complications. So I found it difficult to write volume 3, where Towako appears, with a more dramatic appeal than usual. That's why I love girls in the position of Saeki-senpai… Err, but well, since I said I liked Hishikawa from Doki Doki Precure, I guess that wasn't much of a secret. (laugh)
NN: Indeed. (laugh)
Ca: So yes, I can't wait to see how Saeki-senpai is gonna interact with those two.
NN: I often hear that "Sayaka = Hishikawa", but Hishikawa is voiced by Kotobuki Minako-san, and in the recent PV for Yagate Kimi ni Naru, Kotobuki-san voices Nanami Touko.
Ca: Yes. That's why, when I saw that PV, I was like "It's Kotobuki-san, yaaay!" with a guts pose. (laugh)
−−How did you feel when you heard your characters talk?
NN: Their voices were as I imagined. I didn't picture those voices very clearly until now, but after hearing them in the PV, they are the voices I now hear in my head when working on my storyboards. AnoKiss had some Drama CD's released, what were your impressions?
Ca: From the start, there were characters who talked and others who didn't talk in my head. I was happy that the voices of those who talked inside me could now be heard by the readers. As for those who didn't talk, it felt refreshing, like "so that's what their voices sounded like". I had always imagined Kurosawa Yurine with the voice of Mizuhashi Kaori, so I thought "now everyone can hear it too". Shiramine Ayaka didn't talk in my head, so my feeling was more "Ooh! So that's what you sound like. You're cute, Shiramine." (laugh) The way I picture the characters hasn't changed, but right after the recording I really heard those voices in my head, though now they have quieted down.
Ca: I really think your art is pretty, but do you employ any assistants?
NN: No, I draw all alone.
Ca: You mean you draw everything by yourself, even the backgrounds? That's something…
NN: And you, Canno-san, do you employ assistants?
Ca: I do receive help from friends, occasionally, but normally I work alone. I'm afraid of drawing manga with people I don't know, honestly… Well, you could say I'm just shy. (laugh)
NN: Oh I know how you feel! I'm really shy too… Since I'm not very good a communicating with people, I end up more comfortable with controlling all of my work myself. But I'm aware that it may not be such a good thing when you draw manga.
Ca: That's a very mature comment.
NN: What I'm saying is very childish, though. (laugh) "I can't communicate, so I'm fine by myself!" (laugh)
Ca: Ahaha!
NN: Still, you're pretty impressive yourself. AnoKiss' backgrounds are really filled and polished.
Ca: You could say I'm a bit afraid of the void, so I often try my best to fill the blanks. In your art, however, it's like the blanks are used as an integral component of the picture, and I'm fond of that.
NN: Thank you very much! I have a question about AnoKiss: on the first chapters cover, many characters are drawn, and one of them in the back, Machida Kaoru, already appeared in volume 4. As you are writing an ensemble story, I wonder how far you had planned from the start.
Ca: Kaoru is an exception, actually. I had always planned on introducing her and even imagined the chapter, but she wasn't my top priority either, so she ended up appearing quite late. If the story had ended in 2 or 3 volumes, she wouldn't have appeared, but now we're at volume 4. So, no, I haven't really planned that much ahead. (laugh)
NN: Is that so. Since the gardening club arc and even the astronomy arc flowed so naturally, I thought you had all that in mind from the beginning.
Ca: I pretty much advance at random, but if it feels planned then I'm glad. (laugh)
−−You two have talked quite a lot today. How was it?
NN: As I was one of her fans, I almost feel guilty for talking with her so casually.
Ca: Oh no, I thank you, really. Yagate Kimi ni Naru has a very cool artstyle and you are equally cool, so I was afraid you'd tell me "I don't care about someone who draws such frivolous manga!", but luckily you are a kind person. (laugh)
NN: What do you mean frivolous?! No way! I'm really thankful that I could talk with you today. I could tell you what I liked and what my favorite character was in AnoKiss, so as a fan I feel content… AnoKiss and YagaKimi, despite being both yuri mangas, differ on a lot of aspects, but I was happy to find that I had a lot in common with you, Canno-san. I'll work hard on YagaKimi so that it doesn't lose to AnoKiss, so please be well!
−−Thank you very much for today.
Interview: Kaazu (Kaazu SP)
−−−−−−−−−−−
…So yeah, you can now consider me a NioCanno shipper.
But more seriously, imagine a yuri written by Nakatani and drawn by Canno. That would be something. * o *

[fanfic] Rewards of Losing: Chapter 17
Himura Akane loved cats. She always had. From the time she was a little girl, her family always had at least two, and they’d loved her as well. Coming to Duel Academia had been difficult in more than one way, not the least of which how cats simply weren’t allowed. Most of the time it didn’t seem necessary – it was an island, after all, perhaps the teachers just didn’t want to risk kittens drowning. So she adjusted.
But when their teachers started to tell the tale of how the XYZ dimension had terrifying cats of enormous size that were the next thing to demons – and not the sort of demons that came in a deck – and could talk and stole the bonds between Healer and Firestarter – that was when she began to reconsider. Cats weren’t like that, in her experience.
She’d said nothing. She knew very well how bad it was to step out of line. Some of her friends did that and then vanished without a trace. A few rumors said that at least one of them ended up in Yuuri-sama’s private garden, eaten by his horrible man-eating plants. That, she definitely believed. She would believe any nightmare tale that had to do with Yuuri.
I knew they couldn't be true. She watched the beautiful cat – or Cat – as it walked next to her. She wanted to bury her hands in that glorious black fur but she kept them to herself. This Cat could talk. It was as intelligent as she was – maybe more so, because it hadn’t been born in Fusion dimension where it wouldn’t be wanted.
Not it. Him. Kei. She repeated the name to herself softly, too soft to be heard.
Kei tilted his head up to look at her, ears twitching. “Yes?”
Akane blushed a deep crimson red. “Oh! I didn’t mean anything – just trying to-” She fidgeted, eyes casting downward. “I’m trying to remind myself that you’re – real.”
Kei didn’t look built to smile but the way his ears twitched more and the tilt of his tail told her that he wanted to. “I’m very real.”
She nodded, drawing a breath. “All right. I’ll take you to Fusion. But what do you want to do there?”
“I’m searching for my Firestarter. He’s in the Fusion dimension.”
Akane worried at her lower lip. “Did he get captured?” That was pretty horrible, but she knew that it could happen. The Professor and their teachers made it plain that any XYZ duelist who turned out to be skilled enough should be brought there as soon as possible. She’d never seen anyone that good, but most of her companions had been intent on carding whoever they saw without mercy right away. They never even tried to test an opponent’s strength in battle.
“Something like that. Are you familiar with the name Marufuji Ryou?”
Akane’s eyes rounded and her fingers tightened. “You mean – Yuuri-sama's Firestarter to be? The one he’s been courting all this time?”
Kei’s tail lashed. “That’s the one. He’s my Firestarter – though not quite yet. It’s complicated.”
It had to be. Akane hadn’t ever seen Marufuji Ryou face to face, but she’d heard a lot of stories about how powerful he was and how only someone like Yuuri could possibly partner to him. She had to believe it; she wasn’t a Firestarter or Healer herself. She didn’t know any better.
“He’s in danger of some kind. I can’t say exactly how but I feel it.” Kei nudged his head against her hand. “Will you trust me?”
“Yes.” Akane replied without hesitation. She’d always been a little sorry for Marufuji-san. What would it be like to be partnered to Yuuri-sama forever? He was considered the best and brightest and greatest of them all, even with how cruel and sadistic he could be.
Perhaps because of how cruel and sadistic he often was.
She raised up her Duel Disk and made sure to stay in contact with Kei. Her fellow soldiers would remain here, under watch from the plants Kei commanded to capture them in the first place.
In between one second and the next, everything around them shifted, and when the world cleared up again, they stood in one of the courtyards of Duel Academia. Kei looked around, shoulders raised, whiskers twitching, drawing in a deep breath.
“A strange place,” he murmured after a few moments. “No Cats anywhere.”
“No. There aren’t any cats of any kind allowed here.” She shook her head and worried at her lip again. “Kei, are you going to need my help? I need to go talk to someone.”
Kei sniffed again, turning to one side. “I can manage to find him. But I’ll need you to get us back home.”
“What if he doesn’t want to go with you?” Akane asked without thinking. The way that Kei looked up at her made her wish that she hadn’t and she started to apologize before he shook his head.
“Then I’ll need to go home alone. But go. I can find you.” He nudged her gently. “I have your scent now.”
Akane thought that should sound a lot more terrifying than it did. Instead, she hurried away, hoping that she could find Tenjoin Asuka before it was too late. And she devoutly hoped that it wasn’t already.
Kei paced along carefully, sliding through all the shadows, ears and nose alert for the slightest trace that would lead him to Ryou. The part of him that was a Healer also reached for Ryou; without the bond it wasn’t as strong, but the closer he got to his Healer, the more aware he was of it.
So he moved carefully, keeping away from all eyes as best that he could. It looked to be late afternoon here, just as it had been in XYZ, so there were plenty of shadows for him to take refuge in. Being the shade he was, it wasn’t that hard for him to hide. All he had to do was close his eyes and it wasn’t likely anyone would check any closer.
He was careful the farther he moved along. He didn’t yet have a specific place to find Ryou, but the closer he got, the more certain he was that he was in the right trail.
The plants and trees here didn’t seem inimical to him. They were as willing to protect him as they would be any other Healer – they’d never been told not to help, because the Fusion leaders hadn’t ever thought that someone would come looking for one of their own.
Kei raised his head and sniffed the breeze. Most of the scents he found were those of the trees, bushes, flowers, and other blossoming foliage but he also caught the aroma of humans. Healers and Firestarters and none of the above – and one of them seemed a bit more familiar than it should have.
Slowly his tail twitched as he focused, attempting to track where that one came from. It dawned on him that it was getting closer and closer. Kei leaped into the concealing arms of the nearest tree, letting the leaves fold over him, and watched to see who would come by. There was only one person here that he would have sworn he recognized the scent of – Ryou – and he knew this person wasn’t Ryou.
So why did they remind him of Ryou? Kei’s claws dug into the tree branch as he watched. If someone had done something to hurt Ryou – well, Yuuri probably had. But this wasn’t Yuuri either. He knew that scent as well.
Underneath him there finally walked – someone. Kei breathed in carefully. Yes, this was the one who smelled faintly like Ryou. Not too much; he hadn’t spent time around Ryou recently. He was also a Healer, not a Firestarter with the crisp autumn scent of a nascent Frostflame. His coloring was vaguely similar, lighter shades of blue,
Kei made up his mind in a heartbeat. He leaped out of the tree, landing in front of the stranger.
“Who are you and why do you smell like my Firestarter?” Kei asked, staring at the young man’s large gray eyes. The Fusion soldier stared back at him, eyes going round as he stumbled back.
“Y- you-” He shook his head, trying to move. “You're one of those talking Cats! The Professor told us about you!” The words tumbled out over themselves. “You steal the bonds between Healers and Firestarters! You’re evil!”
Kei sighed and flexed his claws. If he had the chance, he wouldn’t mind finding some way to turn Akaba Leo into mulch. Now wasn’t the time for that pleasure, though.
“Yes, I am a Healer Cat. My name is Kei. But we do not steal bonds. We form our own between ourselves and our chosen ones.” Again his tail flicked ever so carefully. He didn’t want to scare this one if he could avoid it. “And my chosen is Marufuji Ryou.”
The Healer had taken almost half a dozen steps backward before he finished talking. Now he stopped, staring harder at Kei.
“You – you know my big brother?” His eyes somehow got larger. Kei wasn’t certain of how he managed that.
Kei settled down and wrapped his tail around his front paws. “Yes. We met while he was in my dimension and I’ve come to find him here. We have – matters to discuss.”
The Healer blinked, slowly rubbing the back of his head. “But he’s not here. He would have told me if he were coming home.”
“I wouldn’t be so certain. I have reason to believe that he didn’t come willingly.” Truth to tell, Kei wasn’t certain about that. But he would work out the details once he actually saw Ryou and could find out what happened. He brought his own gaze up to meet the Healer’s again. “You say you are brothers?”
That got a nod. “I’m Marufuji Shou – I’m supposed to join the Obelisk Force Healer Corps once I finish my education. That’s what they keep telling me – I don’t think I’m good enough, though.”
“Really.” Kei let sarcasm drip over every syllable of the word. “I can think of much better ways to use your talent than hurting others. You are a Healer. A powerful one, too.”
Shou shook his head without hesitation. “No, I’m not. I’m – I’m just about mid-level, that’s all. And I have to work for that.” Again he took a bit of a step backwards. “I have to go. I’m supposed to go work on Yuuri-sama’s Garden.”
Kei rose up to his feet. Of course! If he could find that – and now here was a way to do so. “Then we’re going to go there together.”
Shou’s mouth and eyes were now perfect circles of shock and fear. “We are?” He squeaked.
“Yes. If I don’t find Ryou there I’ll search elsewhere, but it’s a place fro me to begin.” He moved forward enough to nudge Shou with his head. Shou yelped a little, then stared down.
“You – you are a Healer, too,” he murmured, one hand reaching out. Kei allowed him to touch. Shou’s hand buried itself in his fur and he sighed quietly. “You really are a Healer Cat.”
“Of course I am. Now, can we move along? I want to find Ryou before Yuuri does whatever he has planned.”
Shou fidgeted as he started to move forward again. “What does he have planned? I mean – my brother is going to be his Firestarter. They’re courting. It’s – it’s what they both want.”
Kei strolled alongside of him. “I don’t believe it is. But it’s for Ryou to decide.”
Shou pressed his lips together, then made an attempt at a subject change. “I haven’t been on the front lines. What is it like there? Have you been?”
If he’d been human and thus capable of it, Kei would have surely facepalmed. Instead, he shook his head. “Do you think it’s something grand and glorious? That your army is doing what’s right?”
“Of course they are.” Shou blinked at him as they walked along. “Professor’s told us about how we're going to make the worlds into a much better place.”
“Really.” Oh, this was just wonderful. An entire world of people who’d been fed that same foulness. Kei didn’t have the patience to deal with them all but he’d handle this one. “What is so glorious about invading a world with no warning, having sent people to get rid of their best chances to defend themselves, and turning everyone into cards regardless of if they fought back or not?”
Shou looked as if he were about to protest. Kei regarded him calmly and the words never came. Shou said nothing else, just hurried along towards the area that Kei guessed was Yuuri’s Garden. Just coming closer to it set his hackles rising.
If there had ever been a doubt in his mind, said doubt would be dispelled now. Yuuri was a Dark Healer. Those weren’t common in Heartland, but they did appear on occasion. Those who used their powers to hurt others, who took the most twisted and depraved pleasures in what they could do. Not even being bonded to a Firestarter could always settle them. Sometimes it did, but those were often the Dark Healers who hadn’t been Dark for very long. The longer it stretched out, the less likely it was they would ever recover.
Kei approached with cautious tread, breathing in deeply, tail lashing his flanks.
“He’s here,” Kei murmured. “His scent’s all over this place. Ask the plants if you don’t believe me.”
Shou worried at his lip, then closed his eyes. Kei could feel him communing with the plants in his own way, then his eyes flashed open and he started to run towards the Garden’s opening.
“Big brother!”
Ryou wasn’t sure of how long he’d been asleep. Something woke him up; something that he wasn’t sure of. A sensation, nothing more. Was it Yuuri? Had Yuuri returned? He sat up and carefully rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, trying to get his thoughts in order.
He knew that here, in the heart of Yuuri’s Garden, he was safe and protected. Few were they who would dare to enter it without permission and if anyone did, Yuuri would happily mulch them. Or he would burn them – if his flames ever came back.
Sometimes he wondered if they ever would. That great empty gap inside of himself seemed infinite, edged all around with ice in a way that he didn’t like. If he probed at it too deeply, he suspected he would see something that he didn’t like.
“Big brother!” The cry split the air, thinned only by distance, but still familiar. Ryou stumbled to his feet, looking towards the door. A heartbeat later, Shou appeared there, disheveled and staring at him in absolute shock. Then he threw himself forward and wrapped his arms around Ryou’s waist, trembling.
At first Ryou wasn’t sure of what to think. Neither of them had really gone in for much touching, but feeling Shou there, a strong and trained Healer, settled something that felt out of balance inside of him. It wasn't the sense of bonding, but something similar that had been between them since their powers respectively manifested.
“Shou – what are you doing here? Is Yuuri-sama with you?” He probably was. Why else would Shou even be here?
Shou lifted his head up and Ryou blinked to see tears shining in his eyes. Nothing had happened for tears, at least not that he could remember. Should he remember?
“No, he’s not. And if we are fortunate, then we won’t see him at all.” Another voice spoke. It sent chills all the way down Ryou’s spine and his mouth dried up even as he looked to the door where the voice came from.
There stood a large cat, perhaps the size of a panther, with gray eyes similar to Shou’s. Slowly the creature padded forward, eyes not departing from Ryou, nostrils flaring. He couldn’t be sure how it had spoken but it had. That voice thrummed all through him.
“Big brother, are you all right?” Shou asked. “What did he do to you?”
Ryou wasn’t at all sure of what Shou meant by that. Slowly he shook his head. “What are you talking about?”
“I can feel it,” Shou murmured, still clinging to him. “There’s something wrong.”
“Oh, that.” Ryou shrugged. “It’s part Firedamp and part something else Yuuri-sama’s working on to help restructure my memories.”
The Cat hissed, claws flexing. “He gave you Firedamp? And he’s doing what to your memories?”
Ryou’s eyes shifted from the Cat to Shou and back again. Both of them still seemed upset by this. The deepest part of his mind – a part that hadn’t twitched much in the days since he’d first awakened here – stirred, upset as well. Perhaps he could explain it to them.
“Helping me. I became too involved in the XYZ dimension and he is helping me. I won’t remember any of it when he’s done.” Ryou wanted to sound proud of what Yuuri’s efforts. But he knew he didn’t – though he didn’t know why. He frowned, staring at the Cat. “Do – do I know you?” The longer he stared at the Cat, the more he wanted to call it by name and ask why it was there. It shouldn’t be – it was too dangerous – it shouldn’t be here, in Fusion.
His head began to throb and his breath stuttered in his lungs as his vision blurred. He shook his head, closing his eyes, stumbling back until he fell back onto the bed, pushing Shou away as he did. Where was Yuuri-sama? Why was he here on his own? Why couldn’t he feel his flames
His head spun faster and faster with each second, until he could not have stood up if he’d wanted to, and he didn’t even try. Something was wrong and he had no idea of how to deal with any of it.
A single word worked its way out of his lips. “Kei…”
To Be Continued
Notes: We’re almost to one of what I consider the most dramatic parts! Remember I’ve been hinting all this time about how a Firestarter’s power can invert and become ice? Almost there!

Best Anime Movies To Watch
Looking for some Marvelous Anime movie? I have got you some astonishing hand-picked collection of the movie. Here is a list of Top 10 Best Anime Movies You Must Watch. So without any further delay let’s start with our Top 10 Anime Movie List
Top 10 Best Anime Movies Of All Time
10.Patlabor: The Movie (1989)
Many of the films on this list are here because they’re landmark films for their directors, or that they move the art form of Japanese animation forward in meaningful ways. Patlabor is just a good-ass movie made by a bunch of talented people, including future Ghost in the Shell collaborators Mamoru Oshii and I.G Tatsunoko (the early name for the production company that would become Production I.G). Set in the distant future of 1999, Patlabor’s hardboiled sci-fi police procedural explores the connection between humanity and technology, and how we approach law enforcement in an age of automation. Also, this list would otherwise be sorely lacking in giant mech movies – this film has them in spades, and they fight a bunch. It’s pretty cool.
9.The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)
Studio Ghibli commissioned director Mamoru Hosoda to make Howl’s Moving Castle, but sent him packing after rejecting his initial concepts. Hosoda then turned around and directed The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, an abounding and inventive dramedy that’s as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. Based on a novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui, the film follows high schooler Makoto Konno as she learns that she has the power to quite literally leap through time. First, she uses these powers to get good grades, but she quickly learns that her actions have consequences. It’s a wildly imaginative slice of life and marked the emergence of an important voice in animated films.
8.Your Name (2016)
Since the release of his first short film Voices of a Distant Star (which he wrote, directed, and animated by himself over seven months), Makoto Shinkai has been described by multiple critics as the next Hayao Miyazaki. With his most recent film Your Name. (yes, the period is part of the title), Shinkai finally steps out steps out of the shadows of the greats and finds his own voice. To describe it as a mere body-swapping film does it a great disservice, as it finds the humor and humanity in a situation where two young high schoolers find themselves in each others shoes and desperately want to find each other. But then, Shinkai pulls the rug out from under you halfway through and Your Name. turns into a different kind of film entirely.

Sai, I just went and watched Yugioh Everything's video on Yusaku and Aoi having Autism and Depresson, respectively. While he makes some solids points and I agree with them having mental problems, he basically said Vrains is the first yugioh to talk about 'such dark topics.' If your up to it could you bring up some characters in previous ygo series (Arc-V or all your choice) that implied to have mental problems cause Vrains is not the first by a long shot lmao.
Lmao sorry this answer is kinda late since the past few days have been busy for me and ironically enough you sent this right when I just got back from a grad school info session (regarding psych programs ofc) which made me realize I kinda wanna pursue a career more along research in the field of abnormal psychology which is one of my stronger areas of knowledge in psychology already anyway. I just really like it that much.
So yeah I did see this ask like almost right when you sent it but it was late and I had just gotten home after a nice day and YE’s videos haven’t been making me too happy lately so ofc sorry I kinda avoided watching it that night cuz I didn’t wanna ruin my nice day (just in case). But now that I watched it, well as far as I can remember he didn’t outright say that this is the first time a Yugioh’s dealt with these issues before (but I can see how you got that he perhaps implied it).
That all being said, I still have just a, I’d say, general yet above-average knowledge in these subjects (hey I have a degree in Psych, yes, but that doesn’t make me an expert by any means and I’m not afraid to say that, hell I love learning new things about psych all the time) so please keep that in mind (also please keep in mind too that I cannot professionally diagnose anyone, but for the sake of discussion about the psychology in fiction, I can definitely give my thoughts on what would be the most probably diagnosis for certain characters). Besides that though, if YE does actually believe that this is the first time these kinds of issues have ever been dealt with in Yugioh, well wow idk how much he’s been paying attention before this...
(Long read with further examples + explanations from characters in each series under the cut)
Regarding his statements on the Vrains characters and the disorders he mentioned, I’ll give it to him. In fact, I too am pretty sure by now that all of Yusaku’s “quirks” point to Autism, though, and YE didn’t mention this so idk how knowledgeable he is regarding other personality disorders, he also seems to show symptoms of OCPD (obsessive-compulsive); these include being obsessed or preoccupied with making lists and keeping track of small details, over preoccupation with work or meeting goals to the point of neglecting your social life or forming close relations, unwillingness to see ethics or values in someone else’ light, being stubborn, etc. Wouldn’t surprise me if he has both since there’s a high co-morbidity between ASD and OCPD.
In regards to Aoi, again yes I agree. Girl has depression. It’s very obvious (this I can say with confidence as someone who has suffered previously from it [note: I sought help and let’s just say I’m very glad I did]. The Paranoid Personality Disorder... (I’m gonna be honest.... I didn’t pay enough attention to Aoi’s character enough to determine a firmer answer and I don’t really feel like rewatching the ep). According to him, it’s a possible thing. He did mention that she could just be acting that way because her whole entire life she’s been kinda used so she has a general distrust of people, but that’s just the thing. If in fact he’s correct about her symptoms matching up, it doesn’t necessarily matter if she’s acting this way due to her childhood trauma, in fact, that’s even more reason to validate her suffering from PPD (another area I feel more confident about in psych is child/adolescent development and hey guess what, lots of personality disorder symptoms start showing up during childhood or are even a direct cause of childhood trauma).
Speaking of childhood trauma, you wanted to know characters from other series that have mental illnesses/suffer from personality disorders? Well... (*cough cough* as a psychologist, why do you think I enjoyed Arc V so much?)...Here’s a quick list of just a few select characters I can think of:Arc V:-Yuya (remember, the childhood trauma I mentioned): Oh my poor boy suffers from dysthymia. Again, I’m pretty confident here because I can relate (because I suffer from it too ahaha). While we don’t know exactly for how long, it’s been at least three years with it (ugh) since his father’s disappearance and all the bullying. He shows so many signs of it throughout the show (it would be pointless to get screencaps because the signs are literally everywhere): dysthymia (sometimes called “persistent depressive disorder”) is noted by sadness, anger, irritability, mood swings, loss of appetite, insomnia (did you notice in Synchro when we was feeling depressed in his room he didn’t eat at all and stayed up all night despite being noticeably tired), indecisiveness, low self-esteem, among others. I’m sure people might argue against me, trying to say “oh well he’s energetic for the most part and still smiles a lot” well guess what, there’s lots of entertainers, comedians, performers, and just overall really sociable people who do a terrifyingly good job hiding it.I saw someone once mention that they headcanoned Yuya also has Histrionic Personality Disorder and well... he actually does show signs of it but not so much that he actually meets criteria. Even for being an entertainer tho, he shows this more than the others (either Dennis, Yuzu, or even Yusho), but again, can’t be diagnosed with it.Lastly, and this is more of a post-canon thought regarding the prognosis of his mental health... he’s definitely gonna deal with some dissociative symptoms for the rest of his life (or until somehow, some way they find a way to separate him and the other Yuus, and even then still...). There is just no way in hell you can convince me that he’s not gonna experience dissociation on a regular basis with 3 other people living inside him. Same goes for Yuzu. (Side note: RIP my heart.)
-Shun: He suffers from PTSD. Oh man he’s kind of textbook PTSD: irritableness, mistrust, social issolation, flashbacks, hostility, fear, anxiety, paranoia, agitation, hyper-vigilance, etc. (I’d also say Yuto and Kaito suffer this too).
-Reria: Also suffers from PTSD, but since Reira is much younger, coping with childhood PTSD is a lot harder and leads to more frequent panic attacks, flashbacks, intrusive or unwanted thoughts, nightmares, avoidant behavior, etc.
-Yuri: Conduct Disorder, aka the precursor to Antisocial Personality Disorder. He’s 14 so he can’t really be diagnosed as the second. Anyways, what really tipped me off about him having this is his blatant disregard for any remorse towards harming others. He just doesn’t feel it. On the contrary, he straight up says he enjoys it, says he needs it “just like breathing”, he’s an overall really violent kid and starts fights with literally anyone that gets in his way (like... it’s even his catchphrase “You’re in my way!”), has no knows long term close relationships with anyone (reeaaally wish they had given us more of him and Dennis together tho...), and he’s known to deceive, trick, or lie to others with no guilt at all. (He’s also seen as similar to past villains of Yugioh, outright disproving the implication that Vrains is the first Yugioh to deal with personality or mental disorder issues).
-Zarc: Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Again, another textbook example. And yes, similar to Aoi’s possible Paranoid Personality Disorder, this is canonically induced into his personality as a result of the society he lived in praising his violent duel style and eventual lust for power due in part to the same reason. But just because it was induced due to circumstance doesn’t make it any less valid. It’s another form of trauma, just like Aoi’s whole “being used all her life” led her to develop PDD.
And well there’s more examples in Arc V (you can also argue that Shingo also suffers from NPD to some extent, etc.) but I think those are the biggest ones I can think of right now.
And of course, though I’ve seen them all, I know Arc V the best + it’s just the one that’s in my most recent memory so it’s easier to talk about them, but some other quick examples from the series that I can think of:
DM:-Kaiba: Again, Narcissistic Personality Disorder.-Marik: I think he’s a strong candidate for being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (at least the way his villainous arc portrayed him as).-Bakura: Actually an adult so actual Antisocial Personality Disorder.
GX:-Judai: Depression & Dissociation. Yep.-Ryo Marufuji/Hell Kaiser: Definitely could argue that he displays signs of Sadisitic Personality Disorder, just keep in mind that it is no longer included in the DSM-V so it is not something someone would be typically diagnosed with professionally.-Manjoume: Another Narcissist.
5D’s:-Jack Atlas: Okay so he’s more of an accurate example of Histrionic Personality Disorder, minus the sexual criteria (which, if the Yugioh anime genre/audience allowed, I’m sure would be plausible since he also displays signs of NPD, implying that he might actually want that kind of physical/superficial attention).-Aki: Also like Aoi, displayed symptoms of PPD, though I’d argue she definitely has it and just learns to cope over time after befriending Yusei & co.-Sherry: Shows signs of high functioning ASD (being perfectionist and being obsessed with finding out about her parents murder), but ASD isn’t something I’m too confident talking about yet so maybe don’t quote me on this.-Divine: I’d say you can argue he’s has Antisocial Personality Disorder.
Zexal:-Vector: Another one with.... I mean... he’s not really 13 or 14, he’s actually, what, like 100s of years old? So instead of Conduct Disorder, he actually has Antisocial... technically...-Fuya: OOOOOHHHH You thought I wouldn’t remember a character like him??? (Again, as a psychologist, these are the characters I like the most). He’s memorable to me, despite being a minor character, cuz I’d say he definitely displays signs of having Avoidant Personality Disorder, especially with regards to using his Esper Robin personality to avoid all those intrusive, self-conscious thoughts he doesn’t find pleasant.-Shark/Ryoga/Nasch: Also has PTSD.-IV: He’s borderline Antisocial. Not quite. But almost there.
OOOKAYY Well anyways, those were just a bunch of examples. There’s way more, I’m sure that I missed A TON. But yes it’s as you said, Vrains is definitely NOT the first time in Yugioh history where characters have had to struggle with mental health / personality disorder issues. Far from it.
And wow actually thank you for the ask! This was really fun to think about and I welcome the discussion any time! Anyone, don’t be afraid to let me know if there’s stuff I might have left out or if there’s anything wrong with this or any arguments for or against any of this.
